Oh okay.
To be fair, when I first started out I would get horribly stomped by survivors as killer. Way back when Stranger Things was added. It sounds like not a lot has changed in regard to skill gap when starting.
Yeah, the matchmaking has always been bad, but I remember it getting worse (and staying worse) when the Stranger Things chapter released.
At least back then players started at rank 20 and had to pip up, but unfortunately. 1. anyone could depip back to rank 20, 2. you pip up pretty fast and are quickly put up against more skilled opponents, and 3. queue time was (and still is, I think) prioritized over a well-suited match, meaning it wasn't uncommon for rank 20s and red ranks to be in the same lobby.
Personally, I would never recommend this game to anyone. I often enjoy learning new things, but DbD? Oof, it's miserable to be a new player trying to learn the ropes.

If you're new then you are going against new players, you just need more time.
Actually, from what we know, a new player just starting out is placed in the high-middle in terms of MMR. They'll theoretically lose horribly and their MMR will go down, but it won't be instant, you only lose so many points for each loss.
Sorry about your experience @sluc16 . This game isn't beginner friendly.

You're actually supposed to have that cosmetic. When my friend got the game on Switch earlier this year, the Huntress's Hound mask and some other cosmetics were missing. Apparently not having the cosmetics unlocked is a bug that happens. My friend submitted a support ticket and he was given the cosmetics.

Context for everything should matter.
Does it? From what we know, no, context is not taken into account.
-
Those of us who made the mistake of buying the game on PlayStation or Xbox are most likely forever doomed. Sucks to be us, yeah.
-
On PS4 I play at 100.
On Switch I cannot find a sensitivity setting that works. The framerate is so low that the high sensitivity I need it at feels like I'm swinging the camera wildly. Even at a low sensitivity I drop a ridiculous number of frames when simply turning the camera. I mostly chase on Switch. I very rarely swing my weapon at all because it feels impossible to track survivors, and even those few times are mostly whiffs.

Worse is, if you die you loose and the MMR puts you with people that are lower then what you just had in theory
Yup. I had a streak of good games with actual decent teammates. They did gens, they made saves even in the EGC. It was amazing. I sacrificed myself once to get a Tome challenge done and have done pretty much nothing but die since. One death tanked it all and it gets worse with each match.
-
"No" isn't a strong enough word.
I get teammates who do nothing. Tons of teammates who crouch around the map afraid to touch gens. If they make a save, they don't have BT and they don't take aggro. It's awful, an absolutely miserable experience.
Ever seen a person make it to 5 gens done and the exit gates open with only 163 BP? I have. I kinda wish we'd all died instead of giving them 7k+ BP for an escape they didn't even help with.

No he is not stating that 2K/2E is balanced.
He says that if you win 50% of your trials it's balance even though it would be like : you loose 3 trials at top MMR, you derank and then at this lower rank you win 3 trials in a row then for him it's balanced...
Which is not what we call balance, you can't compare two different trials to say it's balanced.

How is this situation unbalanced? The game is balanced around 2 people dying and 2 escaping. How is it relevant in which way you die exactly?
Edit: Sorry, I probably should've also replied to your comment about the SBMM and MMR and how it affects individual matches. But, I haven't actually witnessed SBMM work that way. For me, as a survivor, I had a bunch of good trials where I had decent teammates, and then I died once (on purpose, no less, to save someone else) and after that I do nothing but die. I have not experienced 50/50, I haven't won a few then lost a few then won a few. As a survivor, it seems the more I die the more I die. As killer, I 0k every match (I don't go for kills) and I still get the same kind of survivors many, many hours later. I don't notice SBMM working in the way it's been claimed to work.
-
How is this thread still going? What did I miss?
Even if there were a way to balance an asymmetrical game that could be anything from a 4v1 to a 1v1v1v1v1 (there's not), did someone provide actual proof one way or the other to substantiate or disprove @tester 's idea of balance?
From what I've seen, @tester is saying that if there are 2 kills and 2 escapes, then it's balanced. That's what the devs want, so that's the goal. But... @tester didn't post stats to prove him right, no one else has posted stats to prove him right, and no one has posted stats to prove him wrong. There's been no concrete evidence to support any claim posted by anyone.
So, until someone has actual concrete numbers to post, which seems to be the only proof he would accept, why is this even a discussion? He can't prove his claim, no one can disprove his claim, and I have yet to see anyone who says "prove me wrong" to be anything other than puerile in a discussion.
The devs' idea of balance is their goal. That's what they go for when making decisions on what to add or change in their game. It's a concrete thing to strive for that they can put actual numbers on. We, as players, do not have to give a crap about the devs' goal in terms of applauding them if they reach it. Our goal is to have fun.
The devs have concrete goals and metrics to use because things like "fun," "immersive," and "optimized" are experiences, they're what you hope those goals achieve. Are the majority of players having fun right now? That's what matters to us. The 50/50 balance goal is for the devs.

As someone who dies a lot... It hasn't helped. Not yet, anyway.
Yup. The more I die, the more I die.
The more I die, the more I get useless teammates and killers who tunnel with five gens left. I don't know how I die 10 times and still the next killer gets a 4k, why am I being put against killers who 4k after I've died over and over and over again? Isn't the whole point of the system to make it so players don't have nothing but miserable matches and are actually put with players at their own skill level?
The other day I actually escaped seven matches in a row. I was amazed, I was with people who worked on gens and rescued each other even in the EGC. Then I made a sacrifice play to finish the Blood Debt Tome challenge. I died, but hey, it was the end of the match and I really wanted to be done with that challenge. And then I died in the next match, and the next. I haven't had a series of good matches since. Hours and hours of playing, and it's been miserable. I only got through a few matches today and then I played something else entirely, because right now DbD is not fun.

I agree.
I, as a Solo Blendette with a Key, have a much higher chance of winning than my team, who is currently 3v1'ing the Killer.
^ THIS. This is a big part of what I've been complaining about.
@tester No, this game is not balanced, because the game doesn't have anything to balance around. On the Steam page, under "Key Features," it says:
Survive Together… Or Not - Survivors can either cooperate with the others or be selfish.
How does anyone balance a game around that? This is a 4v1. In other words, the 4 working together need to equal the strength of the 1 so that there's a good back-and-forth. But apparently, this game isn't necessarily 4v1. It can also be 3v1v1. Or 2v1v1v1. Or even 1v1v1v1v1. Tell me how anyone could balance that, please. That's why there are so many people saying "buff this" and "nerf that." Because the very foundation the game is built on is broken. The killer wins in an early 3v1; any non-participating survivor is handing the killer a 3k, condemning their teammates to a miserable trial, all for a chance at the hatch. It's terrible game design that players are able to do this. Either survivors are teammates or they're competitors: the game needs to decide which and stick with it.
I don't sweat. I'm a very casual player. But the more I die the more I'm put with teammates who don't participate, which leads to crappier and crappier matches.
SBMM should put me with other players at a similar skill level who play in a similar manner. It doesn't.
-
I'm the person who cleanses three or four totems and then dies to NOED at the end while my teammates teabag the killer at the door. While on the one hand I want something to slow the game down and I do think survivors should do bones, on the other hand NOED is all or nothing and goddammit if I do three dull totems and NOED still activates why can't the other survivors just fall into the dying state immediately when the last gen pops while I remain fine, that seems way more fair.
Here's the thing: when playing survivor, you rely on your teammates, but teammates can really suck. NOED highlights that problem.

Then they need to change survivors win condition and remove key* mechanic so there won't be any lone wolf and all survivors benefit from working together. As for tunneling, it's a great tool to find out how bad teamwork is within survivor teams. Most of the survivors i met completely abandon dead on hook player unless they are Swf and then instead of admitting their mistakes blame killer. Or do body block before i even hook someone that's complete waste of time.
Can't say much about fun, it's definition varies from player to player, cause I'm having fun playing a game where is all about skill. I rly enjoy feeling when i won not because I abused mechanic, but because i did good. But with lower tier killers it feels like they underperform so far and devs completely ignore it cause on average it's probably fine.
Playing as survivor hasn't felt like skill, especially not lately. I've had teammates who do nothing but stealth around the map, refusing to touch gens or make saves. I've had teammates who got my friend killed by farming him off the hook twice in front of the killer before I even had a chance to get there (tanking the entire match to earn a lousy 2k BP, brilliant). I somehow had a teammate who, I saw on the end screen after I escaped, had earned 163 BP during that match, then they ran out the exit gate and it became over 7k. I love dying on my first hook watching the other survivors crouch around the map doing nothing.
I don't get matched with survivors who play like me at all, and my experience is hugely dependent on them. It's really frustrating. Whether they're uncoordinated or completely useless, every time I die for that I lose a pip (which now matters because I wouldn't mind getting a small BP reward for the huge amount of time I put into playing the game) and probably become destined to get worse teammates next match, which is a never ending cycle.
That's mostly a problem with the current SBMM system, which is off topic, but it does have a little to do with the lack of communication amongst survivors.
DbD tries to hug middle ground, which leads to it having a very muddled identity. BHVR needs to choose a direction and commit. Make it competitive or make it casual. Make it so survivors are either a team or four solo players competing with each other. Or the devs could make multiple game modes. Something.

Or remove it entirely why is this the only stealth character who has a huge warning and very easy heard from the exact direction they are in? My god it like they hated the series Saw.
Wraith has his bell, Spirit has her phase noise, Mikey has his tier-up music, and Ghostface announces his presence after successfully stalking someone (but before attacking) with a red circle and a booming "exposed" screen effect. All stealth killers have a warning of some sort.
I'll agree, Piggy's makes the least sense, as her stealth ability and attack are the weakest of all the stealth killers. If the devs ever did it, muting her roar would be a purple or iridescent add-on rather than a brown common one, though.

No need to apologize, Im mad currently too. My suggestion is complicated and i doubt devs will make it live.
If they someday announce dbd as competitive game they need to balance it around strongest players and reveal mmr and players escape/kill/chase etc rate so players realise what should they work on. In short make statistics about everything, and balance game accordingly. If players play only around 7 perks, then there definitely a problem. If killers have no chance vs decent swf, then they need to be buffed accordingly.
But if they don't have such a goal, there's no point in discussing anything. Noncompetitive pvp game sounds like a joke.
The problem with this being a "noncompetitive" PvP game is that it's not built like one. It's miserable to play survivor and be tunneled out early in the match. It's miserable to play killer and go against a team you can't even touch. If this game wants to be a fun noncompetitive experience, it needs a huge change to its mechanics. In DbD, when someone has a bad match, it's a really bad match. There are no safeguards in place to make sure everyone has fun, so as a "noncompetitive" PvP game, it's a failure.
I'm not sure it's possible to get a truly balanced asymmetrical game. In a 1v4, the four have to be weak solo and strong together, but for a lot of players being weak as a solo player feels crappy and it's difficult to play as a team when there's no communication. Worse, the game markets itself as "play as a team or be a lone wolf," so it's broken at a fundamental level. One lone wolf playing selfishly screws over the other three survivors. How can you possibly balance for that? Those three survivors are almost certainly not going to have a fun experience.
Yes, the devs should continue to try to balance it, but it's also important they accept that it can't be perfectly balanced and they need to look for other solutions to make sure their playerbase is having fun. A game isn't a good game if it's not fun, that's the whole point of its existence.

Name me a SoloQ buff that won't make swf even stronger. Even with ping system or inbuilt kindred, swf coordination just benefits from it.
Honestly, I'm in a bad mood and have an intense burning hatred towards the game at the moment. So, if you have no ideas, then I guess this game will stay an unbalanced mess forever. Sucks for anyone playing it.
Edit: Sorry. Like I said, bad mood. But buffing solo queue is the only option, devs aren't going to nerf SWF. I don't have any ideas off the top of my head right now. People have suggested a communication wheel, which doesn't seem like a huge buff to SWF if they're on comms, anyway.
-
Anything you do to make the game more difficult for SWF would be seen as punishment. BHVR is not going to punish people for playing with their friends. If you get two or three SWF players who are actually not gods at the game, any solo survivors with them will get punished even more than they already do.
They have to buff solo survivors and then buff killers to compensate. BHVR has said they won't punish people for playing with friends. Even something as small as giving solos a BP boost was suggested and the response was that it would be punishing SWF because solos are getting a benefit that SWF is not. BHVR isn't going to nerf SWF, and any buff would have to be universal among survivors. So, again, solo survivors have to be buffed so that they're able to play at the same level as SWF, and then killers have to be buffed in return.

Just put the portal right on top of them then use it is 99% of the time is a hit.
I actually really like playing him his power though is really inconsistent, you can hit them and get a hit but you can hit it and lose time if your unlucky.
I play on ps5 100% sensitivity.
I'm playing on Switch right now. Unfortunately, the framerate being so bad makes 100% sensitivity unplayable. Trying to get the portal to where it needs to go is difficult with such a low framerate, it's very janky.
I think on Switch he's meant to be an M1 killers with a passive slowdown, but it needs to slow the survivors down a lot more than it currently does if it wants to make up for how long it takes to win a chase when the survivors disappear every time I turn the camera.
-
I want to know how players can aim his chain at a moving target with a thumbstick and a choppy 10 fps. I just don't get how Pinhead's supposed to function like that. What magic function to make that work did the devs include in his gameplay design that I'm missing?
-
Hey, if she's going to be given a directional phase sound within her TR, can we please get back her original phasing-through-the-wall vault animation instead of this stupid one where she hops through the window?
I miss that animation. It was awesome. Pinhead phases through the vaults and it's not a mind game, I don't see why Spirit's vault animation got [BAD WORD]ed so hard.

I was raising my MMR, escaped 7 matches in a row with competent teammates. I died once, sacrificing myself with one gen left to save someone else, and since then my matches have been absolute suck with terrible teammates that do things like crouch around not doing gens, not saving people, and having birds. Whatever is up with the MMR, it's [BAD WORD]ing broken. I hate it. I have died over and over and over again since daring to make that one altruistic play so I could finally finish the Blood Debt Tome challenge. And because I was one pip away from getting to the next grade, now I am many pips away from getting to the next grade. If they're going to make such a [BAD WORD]ing awful SBMM system, they could at least get rid of depipping entirely.
Die once and do nothing but die every time, after. Makes perfect sense.

Dude, I'm the same way! I understand killer and survivor. I know the perks and a lot of the add-ons, I know what to look for, I know to do gens and take aggro and stuff. I know not to 99% a gate if I'm not going to stay there to open it. I still usually die because I suck at looping and judging things like speed and distance. And I just do stupid crap in the moment, a lot of times.
I understand the fundamentals and I can do the basics (like gens and aggro and not looping the killer around a hooked survivor), but the SBMM is putting me with survivors who do nothing but stealth around, afraid to do anything other than hide. It [BAD WORD]ing sucks.

That's totally possible. I saw it happen today. There was only one hook in an area all the survivors kept running to, and once that one was used there was nothing. The killer tried to hook one, he got off the killer's shoulder and ran back to the dead zone, so two survivors bled to death that match.

That's cool and all, but like, if I got a 0k
Not sure what that matters. I practically always get 0k as killer, I'm too lazy to kill, and 99% of the time yeah, survivors refuse to just leave. I open one gate and then I use the time to break doors, find the hatch, or sometimes I go guard the second exit gate and the survivors basically kill themselves determined that I should let them open it, for some reason.
The behavior is super crappy and I don't get it. Many survivors practically demand that killers see them escape, whether that survivor did anything during the match or not. And I've also seen survivors DC when their attempt to gloat or be greedy backfires. The survivors who do those sorts of things are entitled and they're bad winners.
-
Me and two other survivors died, the fourth survivor remained because they were locker hopping. Then they made noise at the hatch and refused to leave until the killer came over and saw them. They practically helped the killer get a 3k and then gloated about escaping. Why?

Only casuals like it
I play a lot of DbD and have been playing for years, but my playstyle is casual. I'm mediocre at best, I'd say. Possibly bad, even. Definitely not high-MMR. And I hate the matches I've been having with SBMM. Survivor absolutely sucks, and what little killer I've played also sucks.
If SBMM isn't benefiting me, I really don't understand who it is benefiting, then.

Hmm, maybe I should've posted my rant here. Probably should've. Here's my response, though:

Yeah, I have not been having fun with SBMM. It doesn't matter how my friend and I play, how many matches in a row we escape or die, we keep ending up with survivors who are absolutely awful teammates. It's miserable. I never do that, so why am I being matched up with teammates who do? I'm tired of us doing the gens, being the only ones found, and then dying because no one else does gens. Gens earn crap for BP and they're not fun, they're the ######### work, you earn practically nothing if you're the gen jockey but don't escape. I could run the killer infinitely, but it's literally impossible for me or my friend to be the one to escape if no one else does gens. Even if we accidentally bump into one of those hiding survivors in a chase we can't force the killer to go after them, which is a bad move on the killer's part because once we're dead the killer's going to be spending an hour stuck on the map searching every nook and cranny for those hiding non-participants, wishing for the sweet release of death. Killers can go AFK against those kinds of survivors and still no gens will pop.
And how can my friend and I keep getting put up against killers who 3k and 4k every match when all we do is die? Why does this game reward the dumbest crap, like teammates who are AFK until everyone else is tunneled out and then they miraculously come back and escape through the hatch? Why the hell did a Meg go from 163 BP to over 7k just for escaping? How do you survive an entire match, all five gens done and the gates open, and only earn 163 BP?!
I don't need great survivors. I don't expect the best of the best as teammates. Mediocre survivors, decent survivors, survivors who are at about my level of skill, that's what I ask for. Don't DC/suicide/AFK, know what a gen is, and take aggro. Why the [BAD WORD] is that so hard?
Matches weren't great before SBMM, but SBMM has made this game so, so much worse. There's nothing fun about DbD right now.
Edit: Killer hasn't been good either the little bit I've tried, but I've barely touched killer (for a lot of reasons, not just because of SBMM).
Short answer: I've played a lot of survivor and it only seems to get more and more miserable. The small amount of killer I've played suggests it is also miserable. I'm mediocre, not high-MMR by any means, and supposedly I'm in the bracket the new SBMM should be benefiting... but I'm definitely not benefiting. My post-SBMM matches are so, so much worse than my pre-SBMM matches.

I lost 20+ minutes of my life today to different killers who decided to slug me and then kill the other 3 survivors instead of putting me on a hook. Super fun.
It's not reportable, nor should it be. What the game needs is a concede option, so I can be like, "Cool, you win," and leave behind a husk that continues to be slugged while I move on. The dying state sucks, devs; congrats on executing such a terrible, miserable mechanic.

We can't know for sure how a new game mode will play out. But this game needs another game mode to not only make the game more enjoyable, but possibly highlight features worth investing into for the long run.
I want another game mode. I think DbD needs another game mode. But I do not think we'll ever get one simply because the devs can't. A second mode would take a lot of time and resources, and BHVR isn't actually very good at game design/theory, so unless they hire people with experience to come in and make something fun, a new mode is practically destined to be a waste of the company's money.
God, I'd love something fresh and new in this game, though.
-
I don't remember when, probably between a year and two years ago. I had finished the current Rift and there was a lot of time until the next one. I didn't play at all for a month or two, and it was refreshing as hell. I rather wanted to uninstall it. Then the new Rift came out and my friend insisted on playing my account to earn the Rift items for me, didn't want to just let it die, and would thrust the controller at me. He hasn't let me take a break since. "We need to do the Rift." "We need to earn Bloodpoints." Then he bought DbD on Switch during a sale and now I'm never [BAD WORD]ing escaping this game.
He's having a miserable time with the teammates we're getting due to SBMM right now and he's still insisting we play. I kinda wanna curl up in a ball in the corner and just never move again.
-
They removed that function because (they claim) it worsened performance. I have not seen an improvement in Switch performance, however. I wish it were an option to remove or keep it, because it was extremely handy and I like the game less for it being removed.
-
Killers have cool powers while survivors have [BAD WORD]ing awful teammates. That's the incentive to play killer.
-
If I could play killer with my friend, I would. Survivor [BAD WORD]ing sucks.
I just had a match with a teammate who did literally nothing. Me and two other survivors escape, I see on the end screen the last one has 163 points. Literally 163 BP. Then they escape and it becomes over 7k.
[BAD WORD] survivors. I swear to god, this is the worst designed game I've ever seen in terms of being rewarded for doing nothing. I keep having teammates who stealth around being useless, go AFK, or throw the match farming hooks getting a crapton of points for getting their teammates killed (2k BP for each teammate killed, because it's 1k for the rescue and only 500 for it being safe), and I just wish I could pick up a weapon and kill them myself. Free of charge, I don't need anything in return, I'll give them to the killer.
Survivor has the fast queue times during the day and I can play with my friend, that's the only reason I'm doing it. Otherwise I much prefer to play killer, forcing them to do all the gens while I screw around maxing Deviousness pretending I can't see them.

Yeah, her face is a travesty. The actress is a cutie, she deserves better.

So why is gen rushing so popular 🙂
Because escaping is what many survivors consider the win condition, and gen rushing is the most efficient way to achieve that. It's bad for BP and terrible for XP, though. The game tries to encourage players to not focus on gens with its BP and pip systems, but the devs underestimate how many people would rather escape with 10k BP than die with 25k.

Are people's queue times really permanently fudged? Mine haven't changed. It's still fast survivor matches during the day and fast killer matches in the evening. I was trying to use up the last of Nancy's Sacrificial Cakes last night and it took forever, I spent way more time in the queue than I did in matches. I think watching the campfire was more fun than actually being in a match, though, so whatever.

Sure @WestManTooth210 It might do all those things, It might also not do all those things.
Wait times are already the biggest complaint, Lets not make it worse, more than we have to.
Wait times will also get worse as people get bored and play less and less. But in most regions the wait time isn't bad because there aren't enough players, it's because it's an asymmetrical game and there's never a perfect 4:1 ratio of survivors to killers in the queue.
Other games have multiple modes and are fine. Identity V has multiple modes. Some games will have a returning mode that is playable for like one week every month, so that it remains fresh and doesn't permanently take away players from the main mode(s).
DbD is [BAD WORD]ing stale and boring. I honestly am amazed it still has players at all, sometimes. It really needs to shake things up. The thing that makes me think it's not doable isn't the queue times, it's that this game only has one mode right now and it's an unbalanced buggy mess, so I don't really have faith BHVR could do even a reasonably playable second mode.
-
That would only screw over solo survivors, who get screwed enough. SWF can coordinate around it.
Anyway, some idiot 99%ing the exit gate and then ditching it gets me killed more often than not as a survivor. I think those [BAD WORD]s actually want their teammates to die.
-
I hate my teammates. I'd prefer to play with literal bots. That's how I feel about DbD's current state and the way SBMM is performing.
Also, console performance sucks, there's always that.
-
You get XP for time spent in a match. 10 minutes is the sweet spot (I think). Any more time than that and you're not earning XP. Less time and you're actually being inefficient due to time spent in queues waiting for each match.

If a killer's MMR increases when they get kills, and a survivor's MMR increases when they escape, then a killer's MMR might rise even with a so-so match whereas a survivor's MMR will decrease when they did everything right but their teammates decided not to save them on their first hook. The lack of survivors in the high MMR brackets could mean the criteria is bad just as much as it could mean killers are overpowered.
Unless I play with four friends, my MMR will stay middling at best because I can't make up for two or three bad teammates. I'm going to die because I think locker hopping or crouching at the edges of the map is boring, so I'm the only one the killer can find, and keeping the killer in chase for 5+ minutes doesn't get the last gens done when no one's on gens.
When I play survivor, in 90% of my matches my teammates are the worst thing to happen to me. And if it takes escaping to increase my MMR, I'm [BAD WORD]ing screwed. I can only hope the Claudettes who stealth all match for the hatch and the Megs who 99% the door, leave it, don't take aggro, and are the only ones to escape continue to do that until their MMR is so high that I'll never have to see them again.
-
I really can't tell whether or not this is sarcasm/joking. It's counterintuitive enough to seem like the latter, since matches where the gens are done quickly end quickly and there's hardly any interaction with the killer at all.

I can't remember if this issue started happening for me with the Cenobite's chapter release or if it happened even before that. Either way, it's really annoying. (PS4)

Good question, I really just focused on the fixed overheating. @MandyTalk could you let us know what exactly IIS is in this patch note on PS4?

I just searched for it and it seems to be something related to the internet, but it would be nice for a mod to confirm.
It looks like IIS means "splash screen" https://games-guides.com/dead-by-daylight-patch-notes-1-74-update-3-2-2/
Which is really weird that this note is included in today's patch because the splash screen seemed to stop overheating the PS4 with its red-hued update in the Cenobite Chapter release.

FPS on the Switch is as choppy as ever, and with the Pinhead update I'm constantly worried DbD's fog and other visual effects are going to make my PS4 overheat.
I'm so tired of this game's issues.

Yeah, they need more keybinding options. There's way too much bound to R1. Right now I have vaulting/dropping pallets and entering lockers bound to the square button, but there are still so many things bound to R1 it's crazy.
