the fact that you can sum up why MMR was a stupid idea with 3 sentences would be funny if it wasn't sad
I think that this is a really 'glass half empty' way of looking at it.
I see it as:
This game is more fun when killers are mostly playing against survivors close to their own skill levels.
Ranks essentially made the game more enjoyable for people at high MMR at the expense of everyone else. When you do a 100 game win streak, that's pretty awesome for you - not so awesome for the lowbies you've been steamrolling.

Yeah it was the same with me for like a week or something. Insanely long survivor queues, instant killer
It just changed today.
Which makes me think it was a bug. Not the first time matchmaking bugs happen
Mm. I'll give it a try when I get back in this evening before our Dungeons and Dragons game starts.

"Can you think of a way to make the game more enjoyable at high MMR while keeping the benefits of SBMM (fairer matches for new/intermediate players)?"
Nope, I can't.
Removing it entirely is the best option.
But won't that be making things more fun for high MMR players at the expense of everyone else?
I'm not sure how that's the 'best' option for the game as a whole.

Early 2020: Introduce breakable wall, Killers have another thing to do. It didnt matter to me much, those were like pre-drop god pallets. Just kick it and its gone.
Oct 2021: Introduce boon for Survivors, Killers have another thing to do. But this time it isnt gone.
And Killer still stuck around Totem as extending the match.
I dont tunnel, I like it when I use STBFL and injures multiple survivors and pressure them from there. Since the Boon Coh, it just doesnt work any more.
A Clown chased a Feng, I & a Clau self healed with a Boon (from Clau), I took hit, went to Boon and self-heal. While at that time Clau took hit for Feng. Then Clau went to Boon and I came to took hit again. This repeated until Kate alone did 2 last Gens in the back ground.
It was fun until I faced the same thing as Trapper, I was chasing an injured Feng and Nea passed by, I hit Nea (to stack STBFL and put some general pressure), then I continued to chase Feng, then Nea healed in no time and came again.
Boon broke Killer side.
Yep. Attrition is no longer a viable strategy when boons are in play.
Fortunately, my current build on a lot of killers soft-counters boons baseline.

I don't think the killer should get harder match thanks to MMR increasing more because survivors couldn't make their way through terrible map for a save. Their MMR would still increase for a kill but not as much as it would had they had multiple hooks through out the match.
Making hooks be part of the MMR the killer has to do more than camp a survivor. The camping killer shouldn't be at same level as the one that actually makes an effort to get hooks.
If you only got one kill thanks to bad map but you had atleast hooked each survivor once - maybe a couple of them twice - you shouldn't have a lower MMR than the camping killer that got 2 kills on 2 hooks, one for the camp and one for NOED.
Camping in DbD is just like cheese/rush play in SC2. It'll get you only so far, and then you'll start getting stomped. I'm fine with that, it's sort of natural.
I'm not...against your idea, per say - it just strikes me as a minor improvement at best.
The focus right now, in my opinion, should be on the survivor side of things.

So pretty much only have survivor challenges left so decided to play survivor for a bit.
Instantly noticed something. pretty much instant queues. I litterally didn't have the time to press alt-tab before i was in a lobby.
Played a killer game after that: 2 minute queue
So yeah the reasons for hating mmr are still valid but that killers are leaving the game on mass and thats what have been affecting the queue's seems to be pretty false to me.
Most likely a matchmaking bug rather then a shortage of players
That's...odd.
My experiences are exactly the opposite. Insanely long survivor queues (can easily get up to 10+ minutes on offpeak, around 2-5 minutes at peak) and very fast killer queues (60-90 seconds topside on offpeak, instant at peak).

See my other post, i'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that (watch Otz video about how MMR system works). Wouldn't make any sense to get to high MMR if you constantly only get 1 kill.
Yeah, I keep seeing this asserted but people vanish the second I ask for a source.
There was a (forbidden word) situation a bit back where someone posted a bunch of alleged 'info' on the MMR system, but a lot of it turned out to be marsh gas and so I think they were full of it.

I agree with this post. Before MMR, nine times out of ten without fail I would play against red rank killers who were all about being efficient. Meanwhile as killer, every third game was against red rank swfs who brought full meta builds or just went for the "bully the killer" route by using head-on to disrupt a chase. The only way I could win as Ghost face was to 3-gen them with ruin/surveillance and force them to make mistakes.
Games were miserable. I didn't want to play but I stuck with it to hopefully make these miserable games learning experiences. Under the new system, I'm having a much better time as survivor and killer.
Bingo.
I think this is a case of a 'silent majority' - the 3000+ hour monsters are having a bit of a rough time, and thus they are frustrated on the forums, but a lot of newer/more intermediate players are really benefitting from the new system.
I know I couldn't go back to the way things were before. It was terrible.

For killer could have number of hooks before each kill. You hook a player once and camp them your mmr will only go up slightly for the kill, you hook them 3 times and it increases greatly. It's just a small change but it would make a difference, especially with the killers that get stuck in a chase all match. A killer that chases one survivor for 5 gens and camps to secure the kill isn't as skilled as the killer that got 9 hooks with 1 kill - their MMR shouldn't increase the same.
Survivors definitely need the change. My swf teammate and I are consistently matched with teammates that are just useless/hiding. They don't even break 10k BP escaping through hatch while my teammate and I die with 15-20k+ (depending on match). I'm tired of deathloop because there's only so much my swf teammate and I can do in a basically nonstop 2v1. We're not getting 50/50 escape/death at all and the matches themselves just aren't fun.
Eh...
The problem is that sometimes other survivors leave a survivor on hook for multiple states through no fault of my own (RPD...you are evil sometimes). This would be punishing killers for survivors playing poorly.
I agree regarding survivor.

It could be a variety of things:
- You didn't position yourself correctly.
- They hit you.
- Latency.
Honestly, blocking hooks is something that's rarely worth it. I'm always ready for it and unless it's a map with really crappy hook spawns like Pantry, Badham or RPD all you are doing is giving me a free health state.

They need to adjust SBMM to be more than just kills/escapes.
I'm...okay with it being kills on the killer side of things. I'm not sure how this could really be better without getting overcomplicated.
Survivors - yes. It needs to be more nuanced. It's absurd that the Claudette who hid all game increases in MMR while the Yun that ran me for 3 gens but died on hook doesn't.

It happens to the best of us, but 3 points isn't a lot, and you probably lost points elsewhere
It's still bizarre to lose points on something that survivors will do naturally and - with CoH - is not something that's possible to prevent with any sort of reliability. Some builds revolve around injuring survivors and letting them heal - but if you use those builds, the system counts it against you.

If the argument above against the MMR is there are less instances of high skill players smurfing and trouncing low skill players then that’s not much of an argument. It’s not exactly an issue that a streamer has trouble winning 100 games in a row because they’re facing more competent players since they win so often. If the only way someone can enjoy a game is stomping on newbies then that’s a “them” problem.
Nor is it a problem if a player who uses a terrible build loses matches against people who are playing just as well with better builds. There’s nothing preventing you from running whatever build you want, but there’s also no reason you should expect to not lose and have your MMR go down when you use bad loadouts or no loadouts, etc.
I agree.
The problem is that the forums are basically chock-a-bloc with disgruntled 3000+ hour folks who are annoyed at the changes because it means they have to play sweaty or lose.

Hackers are Very common in High mmr when you get there...
...im getting anywhere between 3 hackers to almost 20 hackers everyday in dbd,
i've lost count the many times i've reported them and Still see them a week later playing...
That sounds...excessive. Watching Otz and Tofu's streams, they do encounter them but it's nowhere near that frequent.

I did. Some streamers did too I think, I remember FarmerJohn did it.
I "abused" the fact that killers have different MMR.
So I had Oni and Blight, where I actually tried to win each game, when I was in mood to try.
Then I had Legion and Nemesis, where I always played normally, got everyone on dead hook, then let them leave. It worked great to be honest.
I didn't go really super low, I make it so I get survivors with around 500 hours +/-. I don't really want to have games where I can get 4k on 5 gens, that's just boring imo, but just wanted to have option to try meme builds, or just chill.
Survivors I got with Oni and Blight are around 3-4k, where yeah there is no way I would want to play there with Legion :D
Yes, as I said - it's doable. And I suppose you could do it like that, but you *are* having to spend a lot longer doing it and it takes significantly more effort. I know that I'm not running into smurfing SWFs anymore - which was insanely frequent under ranks.
It's something that also would have probably happened naturally with Legion/Nemesis, as you'd lose games and in time your MMR would stabilize in the correct place.
I know that when I started learning Doggogorgon, I got hammered flat for maybe a dozen games and then it stabilized.
Either way - don't smurf. It's a very easy way to bottleneck new players coming in and it can kill games (it basically killed Starcraft 2, I know that).

It's not pushing it to the killers side - it's completely pushing it onto the side of the server...which is where the issue lies, the server receives the information and which ever is received first is the one that counts. Now that could be down to a mixture of things, whoever did the action first, who has the best ping...example being, say I have 120 ping to the server as a survivor, but the killer has 50 - me being aware that my ping is relatively high to this server, will drop pallets early, will dead hard early, thus the Server will likely receive the information first.
And yes I do agree with you, that Dead Hard being a contentious perk has probably made this issue bigger than it first appears. Whilst I personally have no issue with Dead Hard, I understand how frustrating it can be to play against especially with the result now being server sided.
Okay, I see.
It's contentious because in the hands of a less skilled survivor, it generally doesn't do much. However, in the hands of someone that can time it well, it's a bit of a nightmare. When it is used properly, it's annoying - as survivors that know how to play around it and are, for example, extensively abusing the Haddonfield 'House of Pain' pseudo-infinite feel nearly uncatchable. Otz had a survivor run him for almost 5 minutes in there at the end of game - and he was on Nemesis: a solid anti-looper.
Woof.
Again, I'm not sure what to do.
He actually brought this up a bit back in that survivor perks have very little risk/decision making innate to them for the most part - which actually makes playing survivor a bit less compelling. This articulated something I'd been feeling for a while quite well (I'd never thought of it that way before), and why I prefer the killer role.
I'm very curious as to how this is going to end up being fixed.

High Mmr also Introduces Hackers =D,
But we don't talk about them here at high rank...
They're subtle...like my hopes my dreams
Oh Wait...
Could it be that there always were hackers, but because you were facing a far greater variety of opponents you didn't run into them as much - but now, as you aren't facing a lot of lower MMR people, they seem more common?

Sorry but that is inaccurate.
The problem with the killer receiving feedback from a hit that is then rejected by the server, is known by the team. The issue is that the killer receives feedback immediately - so that there are no delays, no pause waiting for the server to decide if it's a hit or a rejected hit for example. I think the pause would feel an awful lot worse than the current system.
It's not about now knowing "how to fix false hit feedback" - it's about implementing a system where there's no pause in gameplay from the killers side.
Mm.
This sounds a bit like a 'tomato tomahto' situation - the issue is that, to my understanding, this essentially shifts the validation issue from the survivor side (DH 'failing') to the killer side (fake hits). It doesn't really sound like there is a way to fix this as there has to be validation somewhere. Naturally, I could be misunderstanding this.
I guess the problem is that DH was the most meta of meta perks before this change, which unfortunately amounted to a buff to an already very strong perk. It can feel overwhelming: fake hits almost always result in a dropped chase as, in the moment, you can only act on the information you receive from the game and when the game tells you that you got a hit, you move accordingly.
I'm not sure if there is a solution here. But I'm no netcode expert, so fingers crossed.

Yeah, that's how they got 2 kill average. 1 game 0 kills, 1 game 4 kills, balanced...
What survivors you play with? I kinda expected it, that it should be impossible to get from low MMR as soloQ, because you need to escape to gain MMR, but that is kinda hard with bad survivors that just don't do gens...
Unfortunately, that's DbD. The nature of the game is, at it's core, snowbally. You're either going to have 1 survivor dead with a decent amount of gens remaining in which case the game is yours to lose, or no survivors dead in which case you're probably going to get 3 or 4 outed.

"who smurfed their ranks down"
Way more killers do it now...
So I am not sure it's really good for new players now, mainly: you gain MMR by escapes, but when your whole team sucks it's kinda hard to escape, so with SBMM I would guess it's really hard to get from elo hell as soloQ...
Record for escape streak is something over 500 (Wima TV) and they didn't really lost it, they just got bored...
Do they?
I've seen literally one on the forums thus far. I guess it's...possible, but smurfing would now takes ages, and you essentially have to bot it (which, ideally, will get you banned).
You'd have to AFK/throw dozens upon dozens of games, where under ranks it was so easy to 'depip' that even a Fog Whisperer admitted to doing it 'to get easier games' for her stream.
I'll agree that survivor SBMM needs to be more nuanced. But I'm skeptical of 'elo hell' - this is something that I hear in nearly every MMR based team game and it rarely exists.

Problem is they are not going to fix those issues...
With old system games were kinda mixed and yeah that was way better for a killer -> 1 skill vs 4 skill needed
It's kinda weird that killers have to suffer time to time, so they can have fun games again...
SBMM wasn't main reason for me to stop playing, but it really didn't help.
That's not how it worked for me.
When I started out as a new killer, with maybe 7 hours under my belt I was getting opponents with 1000+ hours in a SWF, who smurfed their ranks down (extremely easy to do) or that just got matched against me regardless (killer matchmaking protections were almost non-existant). You can go back to some of my first posts where I posted screenshots.
This was great for high MMR killers, as most of your opponents would be less skilled than you. It's how a lot of people did those amazing 50-100 wins in a row 'streak' videos.
It was also pretty great for high MMR survivors, for the same reason.
Who it wasn't great for was the lower MMR folks getting stomped.

I mean without add-ons (or maybe using just bad or not so good add-ons).
I feel like he needs some small buffs. For example you should not be able to break your own chains when you hit someone with your main power. You also should make chains breaking with objects a bit slower I think.
Also maybe the cube should be visible within 40-48 meters range or something. Not a whole map so Survivors have to search for it.
He just feels too much RNG (luck) for how difficult his main power is.
I agree.
There is a gimmick playstyle involving using Lethal Pursuer to attempt to locate the box spawn early. With this, he's probably 'B' tier.
Without this, he's low 'B' or high 'C'. His chain summon is extremely situational and his hunts can be almost completely nullified if you do them right. He relies on survivors making serious mistakes, which isn't good.
As some very experienced killers have pointed out, he's incredibly reliant on addons for viability. And most of those are being nerfed 'to the ground' with the exception of Engineer's Fang, which is going to remain a problem addon and will almost certainly be nerfed further soon.

https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/296451/is-pinheads-base-power-good-or-not
I'm in the very small minority in thinking Cenobite is S-Tier below Blight - 4th best in the game when Artist is released.
His incredible 4v1 allows for great pressure and intel, both are crucial for having a chance of winning in dbd as killer. His 1v1 is nowhere near as weak as people think it is; it prevents survivors making huge distance on peel aways, it holds them close when attempting to mindgame and rotate to them, it even interrupts and disrupts prompts. It's really good - the high skill cap should never be a reason for a killer to be considered weak.
When considering how strong a killer is, you have to consider what their power allows them to do when you play well with it - Cenonite mains at a high level will crush teams, his power is a huge scale tipper, he can juggle, interrupt, scout, deny loop rotations, locate the whole team, disrupt objectives if they aren't aware or organised. He is a real handful at a high level of play. AND on top of all that, his add-ons allow for drastically different playstyles and fun ones at that.
Hmm.
I disagree, strongly.
That 4v1 pressure only works if survivors mess up and either ignore the box or attempt to solve it next to you. Savvy survivors will run the box and solve it in a safe area, and then that pressure evaporates leaving you as an M1 killer with one of the most mediocre anti-loop tools in the game.
Watch Otz playing Cenobite as a good example. If he finds the box first, he can sometimes parley that into some early hooks - emphasis on 'sometimes'. If he doesn't (it's extremely RNG even if you know how the spawns work), it's an uphill fight. Chain summons only really work in wide open spaces - they break almost instantly in buildings, indoor maps or jungle gyms.
He's very good against teams that don't know how to play against him, I'll give you that.
The problem is that while he can squeeze out hits or use chains for intel, this is all time consuming. By the time you've downed someone, gens will be popping and savvy teams will always solve the box when you are busy with chase/hooking.
-
I'm okay with killer MMR revolving around kills. It's not perfect, but it's close enough.
Survivor needs to be more nuanced. It should factor in, at the very least, how many gens were completed before you died.

This game has never been more popular. Steam alone has risen from 35k last year to 50k average players this year. That's a big jump.
Tunneling is how killer is supposed to be played. If you are going out of your way to 2 hook everyone before killing them, you are either memeing or throwing the game.

The amount of game delay you can force on the survivors with chain hunt makes Pinhead a really good Killer, but not a perfect one. He suffers really badly from an inconsistent and difficult-to-use chase power which keeps him from being a completely overpowered Killer. However, with Engineers fang and the correct build (I use Surge, Ruin, Tinkerer, Deadlock, and also the one green addon that makes solving the box take longer) Pinhead becomes an insanely strong Killer. You're able to apply so much pressure it's insane, because in combination with constantly getting injured and being forced to either heal or stay injured but the survivors will also have to deal with the threat of chain hunt happening. Also, while all of that is happening Ruin, Surge, Tinkerer, and Deadlock will be making gens take so much more longer.
What do you guys think about my opinion?
'S' tier? No, probably not. With a decent follow-up addon like lens or the one that applies Deep Wound, maybe 'A' tier. On the right maps.
Thing is - it's an Iri addon. It's supposed to be really powerful. Demo, Plague, Doctor, Legion, Myers, even poor Clown can be 'A' tier with the right addons.

Oh I agree it's probably a hard issue to fix that's why it hasnt been fixed but at that point why don't they just work on rewriting the spaghetti code? I think league of legends did that in season 3 rewrote the whole game take forever but worked out great
Oh I wouldn't go as far as to say they lied just bit less then upfront and open such as the nft situation, the removal of pinheads voice lines, the lack of explanation for the lose of the st license, and the absolute mess that was the twins chapter release and the lack of comment of the horrible state of the game at that time again I wouldnt calling it a lie I just personally think you should always keep it 100 with people at all times, and I don't think they've done that imo
I agree on the ddos thing but I mean the fog whisper otz had reported the ddos thing to them and proved it weeks before they released a comment at that point why have content creators be a part of the development of the game if you don't trust their reports and findings?
- If I recall, LoL moved to a substantially improved engine. I would love a new DbD engine, but the licensed characters...complicate this. Reworking their models would involve a lot of red tape.
- NFTs...I still don't know what happened there and I don't think anyone else does. It's all gossip and rumor.
- The Pinhead lines were almost certainly a legal issue, as they obtained the rights to the character, but not the actor or his likeness/voice. This is why licensed materials can be a bad idea. It gets very complicated. It's why Starlord, Drax and Gamora could be in the new Guardian's game, but they look totally different to their movie counterparts. You've got the rights to the characters, but not the actors.
- Yes, I totally agree that some chapters were a disaster, and they need to get better about squashing bugs with killers etc.
- I'm sure they did. I don't think that a company would just let something like that stand - because if someone died due to a swatting, they could be in serious hot water from a legal standpoint. They were probably investigating behind the scenes for a while.
- There is also a problem with online communities, often described as the 'signal/noise' issue. Essentially, there are so many stories being told and so much information being given without any way to prove whether it's true or not that actual issues get drowned out. Too much 'noise' makes it hard to find the 'signal'.

Im really not trying to be rude but did you miss the part where I mentioned the console issues that have existed for years?
Also that's the thing they haven't fixed the issue but at least they were quick to acknowledge it and comment on it
Communication is key and they are doing great whereas we all know bhvr has been less then honest sometimes
I agree I hate people trying to use one game to ######### on another believe it or not but people can play and enjoy both personally I hope both games continue to thrive
Generally, when an issue exists for years - it's because that issue is either impossible to fix, or too difficult to be feasible. I don't think that the devs lack compassion for console players - it's more that DbD was a little quasi-indie game that nobody expected to take off like it did. The devs have been holding the whole thing together with spit and tape.
DbD honestly should be moved to a new engine or something at this point.
I'm not sure if BHVR have 'lied' - there have been situations where miscommunications have occurred or where something changed design wise after something was said (and the occasional absolutely bafflingly balance change). Can you give me an example?
The DDOS thing...companies generally don't comment on stuff until they have investigated thoroughly. I'm not sure what happened there and I don't think we'll ever find out.
I think that competition is good and I really hope that VHS is successful. There is enough space in the world for two great APVP horror games.

You sure can. In fact, normal people do it all the time. I do it. There's a real thing to complain about there, and people who don't treat this game like a bad match is all it's going to take to send you into a heart attack are fully respectable in doing so.
But not this crowd. No, it's personal. It's not like you can just-- drop the game since it's apparently unbearable agony to play killer, and you apparently know this fact every single time you decide load into a game.
Because you can't just drop the drug, right?
No, what you really need to do is keep playing this game you apparently don't enjoy anyway, get real bitter and angry at those dirty coddled survivors and engage in passive-aggressive warfare in between jabs at those damn survivors and damn biased BHVR. Because you have bad matches in an unbalanced multiplayer game, and you're somehow surprised every time.
Jesus.
Woof.
Okay, let me see if I can explain, because while - yes - gaming forums tend to be negative, killer players do have some very legitimate gripes that are clearly not being addressed.
- Yes, this is a game. We are all playing a videogame. To have fun. When that game is not fun for a lot of people, they come to the forums and give feedback. And yes, it's in the nature of the internet that any feedback you agree with is complete genius and if the devs don't implement it NOW they don't care about the playerbase and that any feedback you don't agree with is whining and should probably result in them just being banned from the game, but sometimes - you do need to at least listen to the other side. Even when you disagree.
- You are free to agree or disagree. What you don't get to do is to tell them not to give their opinion.
- When people take the time to complain about something on the forums, it's because they are passionate about that game. They really like it - even if they are frustrated with it in the moment. And the better something is, the more it's flaws become apparent.
- Plenty of absolutely absurd stuff in the game has never been fixed, or even addressed. There are still infinites. There aren't many maps that favor killers, and the 'survivor sided' maps outnumber the 'balanced' maps. Some killers still have bugs. A ton of addons and perks aren't worth running, or can even be worse than an empty slot.
- Only a few killers are viable at high MMR play, and many that weren't still got nerfed. That's really frustrating.
- MMR threw the cat among the pigeons, as high MMR killers are now facing a lot more high MMR survivors than they were before, which only makes these imbalances more apparent.
I honestly don't know what you intend to accomplish by this thread. People are giving feedback - some well written, some inelegantly. Some of it may just be outright wrong (I know I totally disagree with a lot of the MMR complaints). A lot of the time, it's people that are frustrated just letting off a little steam.
That said - they are still taking their time to give that feedback.
As these are the forums where we are supposed to do that - why not just lay off and let them do this? This post really does come over as rather meanspirited.

DbD has around 50k average players on Steam at present. I'm not sure of console, but maybe add another 60k to be conservative (there are a lot more console owners than gaming PC owners).
That's...a lot of players.

I never hear good things about this game and the last person I knew who was going to return decided not to since it's not worth getting DDOSed and swatted. Also source on the game growing? Because there's 35k people in game on PC right now which is quite a bit lower than when RE released.
Edit: Actually I just went and looked at the steam charts. In June the game averaged 48,765 players. By July it was up to 61k. It is now at 48,100 players. From july to August the game lost 18% of its players on steam. The Trend seems to show it was beginning to grow, and now it's strangely cratering down over the past months until we're back where we were at the start of Summer. We've lost around 9 or so percent of players since SBMM went live according to steam charts. Obviously I cannot comment on console.
The game has more players than it did a year ago but it's now losing players from the high it had earlier in the year. Honestly if it keeps at this rate it will have lost everything it gained in the past year.
If you Google 'Dead by Daylight Steam Player Counts' you'll find graphs and tables over time. I don't have them on hand right now, but last year was an average of around 35k, now it's hovering around 50k. The game had a massive surge over summer, had a bit of a decline in August and is now fairly stable.
Very curious to see how numbers look in 6 months, after people have had a chance to adjust to MMR. Those will be the numbers to look at.
Edit - to your edit :D.
Usually there's a big drop-off sometime in the Autumn (it happened in 2020 too if I recall). This could be anything - a new game came out, back to school, people burned out after the big BP event etc. If it was MMR, then October and November would have had a massive decline too, to my mind - but the loss was small and not atypical to the standard small gains and losses you see constantly.
Again, 6 months from now will be what to look at. We'll have a small surge due to the event and the patch next week and probably another influx over Christmas. Then it'll get interesting.

I agree with everything you said and I feel me and you have similar opinions it's nice to see another reasonable human being on these forums that thinks logically and respects others opinions even if we disagree and you seem to play killer and survivor a good amount both since you seem pretty knowledgeable about the game I just wish we could get more people to look at issues from both sides
Cause killer has some big issues and survivor does as well.i think we all can agree on that
Thing is - I absolutely sympathize with high MMR players that were used to being able to do '50 game winning streaks with a meme killer' style videos and stuff. That must have been fun.
But if you look at it from another angle, it would have been miserable for the players they were stomping.
Now...that isn't really possible anymore, because due to MMR (when it works properly) both sides have around that level of skill and it'll be a sweatfest.
There has to be a way to keep the high MMR people happy without just unleashing them on everyone else again. And I think that's going to come from rebalancing maps, killers, perks and addons and probably a look at exactly what makes DbD such a snowbally game.
That'sgoing to take a long time.

Point 1: that's great and all but it just sucks I gotta play 25 games on pig to get anyone anywhere near my level on her just because my trapper has to be max mmr
Point 2:I would heavily agree that I don't really think gen speed is the problem ik you didn't mention it but everyone points that out when I agree with you it's just that maps need to be balanced more and more killers need buffs, ######### when was the last time they buffed a killer? Trapper recently who's been in the game since the beginning and wraith who they buffed only to revert the change lol
Point 3: I agree as well at high mmr all there is, is top Tiers with meta perks all the way around
Point 4: idk everyone claims sbmm works great for them but I swear I can play 15 games and get stomped in all and still run into swf beamer squads
And I can also pubstomp 10 games in a row and still run into survivors with only 100-300 hours can't be just me right?
- Yes, I totally agree. That needs to be changed ASAP. I have no idea how anyone thought it would be a good idea.
- Agreed. Maps are the problem, and too many weaker killers.
- Yeah. That's most games at top MMRs sadly. The meta becomes set in stone and whatever is most powerful is all that you'll see. It's also where small imbalances become big imbalances...and DbD's imbalances aren't 'small' at all.
- MMR takes a while to fall, and the nature of this game is very snowbally. I made a thread about 'The Rule of 3' yesterday - but essentially, if one survivor is dead by the time 3 gens are done, you'll probably get a 3-4k. If all are alive, it's probably a 0-1k. This game doesn't lend itself to 'close' matches a lot.
- From this, you'll have strings of losses and wins that can all feel like stomps.
- There is also a problem that not enough people are playing at very high/very low MMRs, which can create some silly matches - but not as frequently as ranks did (and it's much, much harder to smurf now).

It's just easier to quit this game and move to a better game, like VHS as those devs actually listens to all the base instead of one side of the game.
Shrug.
If VHS attracts you, then by all means go and enjoy it. Don't play games that you aren't having fun with.
I'm probably going to play it too. And I wonder what they are going to do to ensure fairer matches.
@SunsetSherbet said:
The devs believe they can keep the game alive by just chasing new players forever and not caring at all about current players or retaining them. This can work for a finite time. Eventually you run out of people willing to come to a 5+ year old game with a terrible rep.
I don't think this game has a terrible rep, BM in-game community aside. It's only getting more popular - numbers are up from 35k to 50k on Steam alone, that's an enormous gain. I predict that we'll hit 60k by this time next year.
I also don't think that giving high MMR players the ability to dookie on intermediate/lower MMR players at-will is something that's sustainable either.
I guess I'm just...puzzled by the MMR complaints. Some of them are perfectly accurate - new killers should have a fresh MMR. Survivor SBMM needs to be more nuanced than 'died' or 'escaped'. The game desperately needs more people to play killer.
However a lot of them really do seem to amount to 'I miss playing against much less skilled opponents' - and to me, that's not a positive thing.

Here's the thing. MMR keeps moving forward and killers you hardly play with is at the same level as the killer you play the most with. It's literally impossible for chill games anymore. Look when ever I play killer the wait is instant. When I play survivor it take 10 to 17 minutes to find a match with and without swf.
Yes.
The fact that the MMR of a killer you haven't played for 3 weeks gets pegged to the MMR of your highest killer is patently absurd. That needs to change.
Regarding chill games - you'll unfortunately have to 'shed' some MMR to do it. Which means you'll have to lose. Maybe get some of the BP 'nerf me' addons and run BBQ, Distressing etc. so that you'll get something out of the equation.
Unfortunately, a lot of high MMR players are going to have tougher games now because they are being put up against more even opponents, which at the high-end of things means that the meta is somewhat set in stone. That said, this does mean that their former opponents who are much lower MMR have a much fairer time of it.
-
@jarjargist21 said:
It used to give me a rush of being a blood thirsty killer, as I used to feel like using different perk builds on killer was fun.
Now with MMR it punish you for being creative with builds and I'm basically forced to play with the same meta builds and force to use max MMR killers. It's honestly boring after awhile.
Killers are leaving or switching roles as killer is the most stressful part of the game. Console players are turning off their cross play because they don't want to play against hackers, honestly it's funny how the devs aren't doing anything about it. But did something against modding.
Then again the devs only care for money that the new player base (survivor) brings in.
Reasons why we're getting the artist is because the devs realize that killer mains are upset and they need to keep killer mains happy for a short time, to add a high MMR killer.
Of course the devs will nerf this killer to the ground like they always do with all their killers.
Sorry I didn't mean to rant that is just how I feel about the game and where it's heading.
A few things:
- If you want to play with more chill builds, do so. You'll lose some games, but so what? Eventually you'll settle at an MMR where you can play more chill. That's exactly what I've done and I'm having a lot of fun.
- Yes, killers are too stressful to play for a lot of people at times. It's a frustrating role because you don't dictate the pace of the game, and are constantly under pressure. This comes down to maps and the survivor base just getting too sophisticated not to play loops well or flee effectively. About half the killer roster needs a serious buff/rework.
- I also feel the need to rant sometimes. This game is a snowbally affair, and sometimes you'll get several stompy games in a row. It...sucks. But eventually it'll even out and you'll get the odd winning streak that makes you feel like a monster.
- I really hope the Artist doesn't get nerfed. What we need to do is raise weaker killers up so every high MMR game isn't the same handful of killers.
- Survivor queues are long now, but a big part of that (I think) is that MMR and killers actually having match-making protections now (they didn't for a long time) means that it won't just throw a 7000 hour nightmare up against a bunch of 40 hour Megs, and won't throw a stacked SWF against me.

I don't enjoy stomping people. I enjoy fair matches which isn't what I've been getting when I can't even get a hook in before 2 gens. I'm not gonna camp and tunnel to get my kills. But you clearly don't listen to others and just make assumptions of the type of person some is. You are hard-headed and refuse to believe that the system can be broken just because it works for you and a select few others. If someone isn't liking it they must enjoy destroying people and totally can't just be getting screwed by the system. I have no intention to further discuss with you.
But...don't you see that this is exactly what you are asking for?
For you to have reliable wins, you need to be paired up against less skilled players.
Do you think that's fair for them?
They also want to have a reasonable match-up, and I think that both sides being more evenly matched is a good thing for the majority of people, even if it means that people at the top are going to have to struggle more.
And no, I don't accept that the system is broken, because I have a rational explanation as to why high MMR players might dislike it, and by my own experiences it's absolutely not broken - it is, in fact, a huge improvement.
Unfortunately, the way this game is designed is something of an inevitable snowball either way. Even-feeling '2k' games are rare. It's usually a 0-1k or a 3-4k. Sometimes one or the other will occur multiple times in a row. That's an issue with the game at a mechanical level, not MMR.

No room for STBFL.
Ruin, Undying, Tinkerer, Corrupt are basekit perks for most killers. I don't play killer once without bbq for points.
Currently playing Freddy with fake pallets, BBQ, Spirit fury, Enduring, STBFL with massive success because no one expects chase perks in this day and age.
Add ons: Red paint brush to confuse survivors at the get go and obviously Garden rake.
I find this build a little 'streaky' personally. CI can be waited out, Ruin/Undying can pop seconds into a match.
I've got a weird little build that I run on most non-stealth killers:
Retribution+Plaything+BBQ/Lethal Pursuer/Discordance+Pop/Surge (will be replaced by Pain Resonance in the next patch).
For more stealthy types, I go:
Monitor+Retribution+Devour Hope+BBQ/Discordance/Lethal Pursuer

I BUY Freddy, queue up immediately and get the same 4 man. I matched with them TWICE, even after I got crushed.
Yeah. That's the dumb MMR pegging thing I mentioned. That absolutely needs to be changed. You sort of have to grind out a dozen or so really nasty games to get to a better spot.
The system certainly needs refinement.

Oh, you know, individual Killer MMR. Yes, I know there technically is, but it's basically meaningless.
One of the major points that they made when they announced SBMM was that Killer players wouldn't need to get stomped while playing a brand new Killer. That was a lie.
I even tested and proved it myself. There is almost zero variation in Killer MMR.
No. It...makes sense. Somewhat.
The initial pegging of a specific killer's MMR is definitely too generous. It should likely be lower, so you don't have to 'grind out' a dozen games while it calibrates you.
However, killers do have their own MMR which can rise or fall independently. I certainly get harder opponents on my Demo, Hag and Doctor games than I do on my Pig or Ghostface games. Far more PC players, far more SWFs and definitely more people that know what they are doing.
I would like BHVR to address their original quote, but this feels like a matter of crossed wires or something that changed later in development.

So this is being the "power role", stomping noobs? Of course everything that counts is your fun and fullfilling your power fantasies while 4 other players have a miserable time.
Honestly dude, just play chill. I only put the effort into matches that i'm willing to put in, i only use perks and add ons that i want to use. If i lose it's fine, as long as matchmaking works i will play against survivors much more my level. I accepted that this game is unbalanced at highest level and that i don't have a chance with some killers even if i don't do mistakes. But stomping noobs is boring and there is no reason to punish innocent people. Before MMR i had a high win rate with a lot of stompings because the game would often match me to purple rank survivors while i was rank 1. This isn't fair and boring after a while. If you don't want your MMR to skyrocket, give hatch/ gate to the last one, i do that every time (when i could 4k) and someone will be happy.
This.
And this is what frustrates me about so many of the complaints about the SBMM system - which, to be blunt, amount to 'I miss stomping noobs'.
Smurfs were a blight in the old system. It was so easy that even some Fog Whisperers admitted to doing it for easier games and I'd love to know how many new players just quit in disgust after being trounced by people with thousands more hours of experience than them.
And yes - there are ways to 'manage' your MMR, if you really want to do that. Go easier. Let the occasional 2 or even 3 survivors go after a hard-fought game. Run some silly perk combos. Ease up.
Just...don't essentially AFK out two dozen games to grief newbies. That's just a meanspirited, petty thing to do.

Somehow I doubt that. I've heard way too many people say they wanna revert back. Also I shouldn't have to get ######### crushed for 12 games just to have 1 or 2 enjoyable ones because just playing the game and getting your objective will undoubtedly put me right back against tryhards. Being at a significant disadvantage the whole time and not being able to do anything as a so-called power role completely drains fun from the role. I don't want to suffer while trying to have fun, and I'm not playing for points. I am playing killer to kill. I recognize it might only be 1 or 2 kills sometimes but Jesus Christ this is #########. I would rather just play survivor where I feel like I have some sort of power to make a difference.
See, this is the problem.
For you to have less sweaty games, the system has to match you up with less skilled people.
Which in turn makes things a lot less fun for those people.
I know that it's not great to have to play sweaty or lose, but under the rank system, this is going to be the case for a lot of new/intermediate folks. Because for you to have an easy time, they have to have a much less fair matchup. And sure, you could say 'well, I'll just go easy' (which from your own statements I doubt - it sounds like what you enjoy doing is *winning*) - but that's not going to be the case elsewhere.
Again, my own experiences were terrible until MMR and if I hadn't been basically trapped in my house with nothing else to play, I'd never have stuck it out. I wonder how many potential players didn't stick it out because they were constantly being matched up against endless smurfs or people far beyond their skill level who just wanted easier games to just smash the faces of people less skilled than them.
And yes - killer has issues right now, but these aren't to do with MMR. You are just noticing them now because you are being put up against other high MMR people.
What should be the focus is fixing these issues: reworking maps, fixing infinites, buffing about half the killer roster, addons and perks.
EDIT: My original post came over as a bit harsh. Have edited.

I haven't been trying. That is my point. I haven't even been camping. Regardless of what I do it never gets any better which you would know if you took the time to read instead of jumping to conclusion. You can't defend it with your own experience because the MMR is affecting everyone differently. It works for some, not so much for others as evidenced by the forum and on reddit. Many people have admitted to having way calmer games with the old system compared to the new one and many people have expressed their frustration with how they are lower MMR and still matched against people way higher than them
How do they know they are lower MMR?
This is actually a fascinating piece of psychology. A lot of people who are bad at things think they are better at them than they are. Similarly, many skilled people vastly underestimate that skill.
Keep at it. MMR takes a while to fall. I know that when I started a new killer it was maybe a dozen very difficult games before it started to even out.
While I'm never going to advocate for someone smurfing - consider trying to grind BP at the expense of 'wins' for a while. Most killers have a brown addon that does this. Do maybe a dozen games, then turn up the heat slightly. See how you go.
Also - yes, the majority of comments regarding most aspects of a game, especially a significant mechanical shake-up are going to be negative, because generally people don't take the time away from something they are enjoying to make a complaint. It's the 'customer service' paradox.
I think that the MMR system has definitely illuminated the shoddy balance the game has in some areas (as high MMR always does) and that it probably needs some of it's quirks ironed out.
That said, throwing the baby out with the bathwater at this point...would probably be a disaster. I know that I wouldn't want to go back to 2/3 of my games being against BM smurfing SWFs with thousands of hours more experience than me. That would probably be it. And I think that a lot of people who don't frequent the forums (a lot of people here are the 'crusty veteran' types) would react similarly.

playing killer is one of the most stressful things in the entire game and as it has been shown over the years by the devs idea of balance that is not going to change (srsly its an asymmetrical game why are they balancing for 2kill2escape with a 50% kill average it should be 3kill1escape with a 65% kill average at least, killers are supposed to be the power role)
so what makes you decide that you want to play killer (other than being a masochist).
I personally only play killer to get 100% achievements and the tome challenges.
Sure.
I've tried both.
MMR has made playing killer a million times more enjoyable for me, for starters. Now, over half of my games are really even, really good times. It's still stressful, sure, and every so often I'll get a map/killer combination that makes me want to eat a puppy but...well...
- Survivor gameplay is so static. Aside from a handful, most perks are 'do stuff faster, see stuff better, escape chase easier'. There is almost no counterplay, no risk and no decision making.
- Every survivor plays the exact same.
- Sometimes I'll win/lose games as a survivor not due to my own efforts/mistakes but the efforts/mistakes of others. I've had a few survivor games where I've barely seen the killer.
- Killers on the other hand are wonderfully varied. Not only does each killer feel like a different game, but I can further mix that up with addons and perks. My 'infect all the gens' Plague feels totally different to my 'maximum vomit' Plague and my 'super stealthy' Plague.
- It feels like while survivors are in charge of how the game plays out mechanically, I'm in charge of how the game plays out narratively.
- In a game with an absolute toothache of a grind, the extra BP I get as killer is wonderful.
- I'm a solitary person by nature and really don't like having to rely on others, especially in games. As a killer - it's all on me. And I like that (although I'd love a Cho'Gall type two-headed killer me and the wife could play together!).

I don't care how bad or inaccurate it could be, it still worked better than this. I have played five killer matches today and in only one of them was I adequately matched and that was because it was an instadown killer. An M1 killer would have been screwed. I can't take it anymore. I genuinely see why no one wants to play killer. Can't play for fun or get out of ash rank if I wanted too because every game is just a whole bunch of SWF groups who stomp the ######### ######### out of me before I get a chance to even make a ######### impact on the game. This is by far the least amount of fun I have ever had playing this goddamn game.
Mm.
I disagree.
The old rank system was amazing for people at high MMR and utter hell for everyone else. Before MMR, I'd be getting matched against high rank streamers and I had to sweat every single game for the 2k. Playing chill or trying different killers/perks and the like...wasn't even an option.
Not to mention that it was so ridiculously easy to smurf your ranks down that we even had some Fog Whisperers admit to doing this.
It was miserable.
Now, the system means that high MMR people will face other high MMR people and I'll generally face other intermediate types. This means that - yes, high MMR players will have sweatier games. This is the case in any game with MMR. The reason you are sweating is you aren't constantly being matched against people of lower skill. If you ease up, your MMR will drop down to a more chill level. If you start 4king those less skilled players again - it'll rise.
And smurfing is much more time consuming now, meaning that thankfully I rarely see it.
Your killer - that was fine. If your other killers struggle, their MMRs will fall.
The system definitely has some idiosyncrasies and needs improving, but honestly - going back to ranks now would probably result in me just leaving.

Is Survivor and Killer MMR put together as one? Does each side have it's own MMR? or does each character have their own MMR?
I ask because I play mostly survivor. I have an escape rate 75%+ and I get matched with pretty decent teams and killers. I haven't played a ton of killer because I'm working on unlocking more perks. With that being said I'm not very good with killer but I'm getting matched against survivors close to the level I get matched with when I play survivor and everyone has full on meta builds which is cool cuz it helps me learn a lot quicker, but is this because I have higher MMR as survivor and therefore it knows that I have an understanding of the game so it makes a compensation for that? Or maybe it just comes down to the time that I play which is mostly in the middle of the night at some point between 2am - 7am due to my working schedule.
I'd really appreciate if someone could help me clear this up.
From what we know:
- Your survivors all have a shared MMR.
- Each killer has their own MMR: BUT when you start a new killer, it's MMR is pegged to just under your best killer's MMR (don't ask me why). However, they can rise and fall independently from there.
- 3 weeks of inactivity on either survivor or a specific killer will reset that specific MMR (implication, unconfirmed).
- When you start out on killer/survivor, you are initially assigned an 'average' MMR - which means that the system will initially put you up against a very wide variety of enemies. It'll take a good while to 'calibrate'.
- MMR increases when you kill someone as killer, or when you escape as survivor.
- Hatch neither increases nor decreases MMR for anyone.
- MMR has 'floors' and 'ceilings' - brackets, essentially. The system generally won't mix you with players outside of your bracket. However, this does not always seem to function correctly.
- The actual MMR increase/decrease from escaping/killing/etc. is unknown.
- There was an alleged bit of information that came out (in a way we're not allowed to discuss on the forums) but a deal of it has been disproven. Nonetheless, a lot of people still refer to it.
- There do seem to be a lot of quirks to the system, primarily that it'll start picking people from very wide ranges at times. I suspect this involves ultra-long queue times at very low or very high MMR, or lobby dodges.
I hope this helps!

I had this for a little bit. I ate about 20-30 face stomps to get it. Feels like its gone off kilter again a little as games swing wildly between me stomping and then getting stomped.
That's...DbD though. Rule of 3. If there's a survivor dead early, you stomp. If there isn't, you generally get stomped.
