You just said what all of us wanted you to.....

"you stopped the action the action stops" so apply that to a survivor wanting to get off the gen and their you go... It doesn't matter YOu stop in the middle of a skillcheck then it's going to deem it missed

I don't think we're discussing the same issue. I am not talking about the times when a skill check procs a half second before you get off the gen, and therefore you miss it.

In what I am talking about, you're not getting off the gen in the middle of a skill check and therefore missing it. You get off the gen and THEN a skill check procs. But because the server recognizes you are off the gen, it does not allow you to even attempt to hit it. That is completely broken. If you do not agree with that, then agree to disagree.

    No it's bugged

You said it yourself... Normal skillchecks disappear and you get penalized for it that's what Overcharge was meant to be but it happens as soon as you touch the gen rather then whenever the game decides you face a skillcheck

It's only a bug if it wasn't intended to be that way. The only people who can answer that are OG players and Devs. But I have never heard anyone say Overcharge was ever any different. If you think it's a bug, I recommend reporting it in the forums so you can get an official response from a mod.

I've had them pop like that too, i always just put it down to bad timing when i was releasing someone being healed or repairing seeing as it isn't consistently happening for me when i leave either of those actions.

    Someone commented:

They actually fixed this a long time ago, then reverted it because people were "gen-tapping" to avoid (old) Ruin, even though it was demonstrably slower than just doing the gen through normal Ruin checks.

Then they changed Ruin and never reimplemented the change.

It's annoying, and I have personally seen it cost matches from both sides of the game. Losing because of RNG feels terrible in any PvP setting, and I wholeheartedly wish they would address it. The game already has enough RNG, and they've already shown it can be fixed.

I haven't been here since the OG days so I don't remember this ever being the case, but if that's true, then it means this is something the devs can at least fix. I don't see how this was a counter to old ruin since I never got a skill check when tapping, but I suppose if you took too long between "taps" that could happen.

I don't know about you, but my experience is like another commentator's where it's not a matter of bad timing as much as bad luck. Have I gotten a skill check noise notification but released a split second later while working on the gen, and then auto-blown the skill check? Yes. And that's my fault because that's bad timing on my part. But my issue is when you release working on the gen and THEN you get a skill check that instantly auto-fails. That's bad luck. You can do nothing about that as a player, and that shouldn't happen.

There's bigger balancing issues in game then blowing a skill check

That's irrelevant. No one made the claim, "Stop what you're doing and fix this now! There is literally nothing else bigger in importance!" If that claim had be made, I'd side with you. But that's not what's happening. This is a discussion about something that is a problem, and other things being an issue don't make this not an issue.

  • @ArchGunRunner said:

You shouldn't be hitting any generator based skill check if you aren't on the gen. That's kind of the point of it being a generator based skill check. You leave, you fail.

(For reference i have played both side on console worth 700 odd hours and only recently moved to PC so not enough time to 50/50 both.)

Which is why you shouldn't be getting a generator skill check if you are off a gen. As you said, the point of skill checks is to be a test during a generator repair. If you stop repairing the generator, then you should not be given a skill check that instantaneously auto-fails. You have no way of even attempting to succeed, because the game won't allow you to try because the server recognizes you are off of the gen. And yet, it still procs a skill check. That is broken.

I agree with you that generator skill checks should happen while working on a gen. I disagree with "You leave, you fail." You should only fail if you miss the skill check.

The game should never proc a skill check after you cease repair, but since it does do that, then the survivor needs the option to hit it. Maybe they'll hit it, maybe they'll fail. But the result will be based on the survivor's skill. And that's how it should be.

  • I use it, but not religiously. I usually run it if I've had a lot of bad solo queue experience or if I have a challenge, like safely unhooking somebody. I want to see if I can make it in time, or if someone else is on their way and will beat me to it.

  • I think @MandyTalk might be able to answer this. I haven't seen an update from the devs regarding your question, but it's possible I missed it.

  • @AGM said:

If a streamer I watch has a good suggestion or idea I'll consider it, but sometimes their ideas suck and you shouldn't be afraid to say so just because you like their content.

Yeah. I've watched streamers whom I like and tend to agree with take vastly different opinions on things. Both have played for years, 8000+ hours in the game, both Fog Whisperes, etc. Sometimes opinions are going to differ because of personality, play style, etc. I don't like unhealthy skepticism, and I don't like blind following. It's a balance.

  • Removing auto-failing skill checks that proc after a survivor has already gotten off a gen is not an advantage. It is what should be.

  • @RaSavage42 said:

So let me ask you all something.....

What if I use Pop... wait till the last second to use it should it work?

Or if I'm kicking a gen and stop at the last second should it blow up and start regressing?

Or if I go to hook someone and stop at the last second should the survivor be hooked? (I know you can't stop the hooking animation... I'm just saying)

That is not an apples to apples comparison.

You are not being randomly and unexpectedly punished in any of those situations. You choose to stop an action, and the action stops. That's all that happens.

On this issue, the survivor chooses to stop an action. The action stops. But unlike the Killer, it doesn't end there. The Survivor then gets penalized with triggering a loud noise notification and regressing the gen. And they have no way to stop, predict, or counter it.

As I said previously Overcharge is bugged right now and allows you to complete the skillcheck while on the move and it shouldn't

The Devs aren't that concerned about it though so it only makes it worse....Why don't you think no one uses it

As far as I am aware (an OG DBD plater or mod would have to weigh in), that is not a bug. It is an intentional mechanic.

But even if it were bugged, does that negate the opinion that most of the commenters have? No. The way overcharge works is merely an illustration of how regular skill checks should work.

  • @RaSavage42 said:

Letting go of a gen or stop healing causes the action to be shut down.... therefore if a skillcheck has started and you let go should cause you to fail the skillcheck due to you not working on whatever caused the skillcheck to happen in the first place

But that's not what happens with Overcharge, and in this instance you get off the gen and then you get the skill check. You stopped the action prior to getting the skill check. The skill check either should never proc when you're off of it, or if it does, you should be able to complete it.

  • @MadLordJack said:

I don't know if anyone else gets this, but sometimes a skillcheck will pop up just slightly after I let go of the generator and I'm finishing up the animation.

I think I know what you mean and if so, yeah. Happens to me too.

  • @CashelP14 said:

This literally happens to me once a game, absolutely hate it.

Would be nicer if they changed it to be more like the overcharge skill checks.

Agreed. It happens sometimes multiple times a game.

  • Not necessarily obvious. Someone else commented that it was fine as is.

But I agree with you. It's broken.

  • @OniWantsYourMacaroni said:

I'm convinced that it's an actual in-built mechanic. It's too consistent

Do you think it should stay as is?

  • That's a good point, especially when you're chasing a survivor who runs near an in-progress gen. The working Survivor hears your terror radius, quickly gets off the gen, and you go to that noise thinking maybe the Survivor you were chasing hopped a window.

  • @Exxodus21 said:

This mechanic is fine the way it is. You shouldn't be able to hit a skill check while running away. It's the exact same as if you were startled while repairing something and jumping made you break it instead.

If anything, the Overcharge skill check should work like normal skill checks.

Being startled is one thing. Having no opportunity to try is another. I have been startled and succeeded a skill check. I have been startled and failed. That is the point: to test me. Auto-failing a Survivor is broken.

    @Snowbawlzzz said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2482386#Comment_2482386

Except the survivor didn't do anything to warrant their generator being blown up. They had no opportunity to avoid it.

    Agreed @Snowbawlzzz

  • @xenotimebong said:

Yeah this “mechanic” is so dumb and really unfair. If you let go before the skillcheck has even appeared on your screen, you shouldn’t explode the gen. You can’t possibly play around it or account for it because it’s random and not possible for you to hit something that doesn’t exist yet. And sometimes you have to let go of a gen quickly to avoid being grabbed or insta downed.

Agreed. It seems to me this was an oversight that should be fixed.

  • @ThiccBudhha said:

I barely play survivor and always thought that mechanic was stupid. I only do my daily, more or less, and this happens quite often to the point where if I want to leave and I am not being pressured by a killer, I wait for a skill check before I go.

As a killer, I see it happening to other people literally all the time.

That's interesting. I'm glad you commented. I can understand that maybe this was intentionally designed this way to aid Killers (especially from the perspective of the OG DBD days). But if you barely play Survivor and still find it stupid, that's telling.

  • @botrax said:

Yes and no. What i mean by that lets say the killer is coming but a skill check pop at the same time you let go you will be stuck in the animation and you can get hit or grab.

I've not been stuck in an animation when I had to hit an Overcharge skill check off of the gen. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding. Could you please clarify?

  • @Tricksters_Wife said:

I play both sides. I absolutely hate when I'm getting off the gen, and the notification sound happens right as I'm getting off and nothing pops up and it blows the gen and counts as a missed skill check. You would think the chances of this happening are slim and rare, but it literally happens to me maybe every other match.

Agreed. It happens a lot to me, too. I'm wondering if that was an intentional mechanic put in by the devs to aid to the Killer, or if it truly is just random.

  • @InsaneCoaster said:

Always good to learn things from streamers, but you should avoid forming your opinions as carbon copies of theirs'.

When new to the game, I took a lot of what some streamers said almost as objective fact, and looking back on some of those things now, I couldn't have disagreed with them more.

That's a very good point. Especially if you watch a lot of streamers, you'll notice they can have drastically different opinions on the same issue. It's good to hear their thoughts, but people don't have to accept them as fact.

  • @Elcopollo said:

That's probably the most accurate statement for me. Streamers do not tend to influence my opinions much. Sure we might think and say basically the same thing, but it's an instance of us both coming to the same conclusions in our own way - the thoughts behind opinion on why this is balanced and that is too strong are always my own. My playstyle, though, is a bit of a mixed bag. I surely get influenced to an extent by other streamers in that regard (say some of them found a new tech or came up with a great build I never thought of), but a lot of that also comes from the personal experience. Besides, there aren't that many overarching playstyles - you either play casually 'cause you want to play, or you use any means necessary in order to always get 4k/escapes 'cause you are competitive like that for some reason.

BUT coming back to the chosen option - that's very true. I might lose a game or two or ten and exit the game, wishing I never wasted my time on this bs. Still, some time later I would open up YouTube/Twitch and see my favourite content-makers do exciting and fun stuff in this game, which in turn would motivate me to come back and try out new stuff i saw them doing, despite me wanting to delete the game completely just an hour ago. And I believe that a lot of other people are the same way.

That's a very fair, reasonable take.

  • I second the 1, taking a break from dbd (should add social media to that) 2, playing calming music and 3, exercising.

Are you getting enough sleep? Drinking enough water? Are you on your phone right before bed and first thing in the morning (if so, try not doing it for a few days and see what happens)? Do you do yoga (or even just simple stretches)? All of that can play a role in calming yourself.

I would also recommend getting a great therapist and/or doing some soul searching. Is your anxiety rooted in some unsolved issues, or does it exist regardless of what's going on with your life? If it's the first, taking some time to acknowledge, process, and/or plan can help. If it's the second, I go back to getting a good therapist who can 1, help you unpack what's going on and 2, give you techniques to help you when you're in the middle of it. Your brain is an incredibly powerful organ, and like any organ, it sometimes needs some help to heal.

If you need some resources, go to psychologytoday.com. Type in your zip code and find a therapist who specializes in what you need. You can also see what insurance is accepted (if at all), what types of therapy they use, and the costs for out of pocket visits. Additionally, if a therapist is advertised as having a "sliding scale" it means they're able to lower the price.

    Take care.

It's not that I care about them, it's more that I wanna try my absolutely hardest to make sure everyone has fun in the trial they load into, regardless of perks, characters, or whatever, unless I've had a really bad day at which point I put my own personal standards to the side. And to hear that, despite my best efforts, I still can't let people have fun is just... frustrating. I just want people to enjoy themselves because I know that not every game is enjoyable.

Ah, I get what you're saying. You know, your motives are good--and I'm glad people like you are playing the game.

But you didn't fail. There was nothing that you did wrong, or could have done better. And I know that you're thinking, "I tried, and it didn't work, therefore, I must've messed up somehow." But that premise is wrong. A great part of the time, we can do better. But it's also equally important to recognize when we can't.

"It is possible to commit no mistakes--and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life."

You tried. It didn't work out. Sometimes, there's nothing more that could've been done. You're taking on so much responsibility--too much responsibility. You cannot guarantee how someone else will react to you. If so, does an abused woman deserve to be hit because she didn't make her husband feel perfectly happy and understood? Is it her fault that she didn't do everything "perfectly"? Don't twist yourself into a pickle. You didn't do anything wrong.

  • I know this probably isn't the answer you want, but I read your post and thought "Why does he care so much what they think?"

Who are they, seriously, to get you upset? Do you feel you did something wrong? Do they have any actual, valid criticism of your actions? If the answer is no, then be secure with that and be done with it.

Not every player in this game is going to have the mental and emotional maturity to react to you fairly or rationally. Not everyone is going to understand you or your actions, or offer you a generous assumption. That's not your issue. That's theirs.

I once heard before, "Not every thought you have has to be entertained." And I'll add to that for you, "And not everyone's opinion of you has to be either."

You're right! All of those are pretty rare. Luckily, those killers are in the rotation of ones I play, so I get to see them that way at least.

And yes, I definitely respect well-placed traps! In fact, if it's used against me, I will copy it for when I play Trapper, therefore improving. Trapper really is the "you beat yourself" killer.

Yes! I don't play much Killer, but I did some Killer matches to try to grind out some simple challenges from the previous rift. Not everyone could tell I was being friendly, so I had to stop and seriously try to catch them in traps. Hiding them in the bottom steps at Gideon worked like a charm. You can barely see them. I got that idea from an excellent Trapper who used it against me. Now I always check haha or hug the stairwell.

heres some builds to try with them, if you want any other builds you can ask :)

    "All Seeing" Demo

    Addons:

    -Lifeguard whistle and Sticky Lining

    Perks:

-Ruin, Surveillance, Bitter Murmur, and undying. With this build your portals can act as constant surveillance in important areas (including your ruin totem) and everytime a survivor leaves a generator, your surveillance and ruin will instantly inform you. Bitter murmur also helps a lot, since anytime a gen even manages to get completed without you instantly knowing, you get to see where all the survivors who completed the gen are. The build turns demo into a pretty opressive tracker, its quite fun.

    "Silent Sniper" Pyramid Head

    Addons:

    -Burning Man Painting, Wax Doll.

    Perks:

-Tinkerer, Pop, I'm All Ears, Trail of torment. The idea of this build is to turn pyramidhead into a lethal ambush attacker, and heavily relies on your ability to hit long distance shots outside of the range your sword makes sound. The addons will help a lot with this, but you can feel free to use whatever ones you like. The gist of the build is that whenever tinkerer procs, you move silently towards the gen and snipe anybody on it from long distance. You will pretty frequently get some downs/injures doing this, and its really fun. Pop lets you bring the gen back below tinkerer level so you can use it again, and trail of torment lets you choose to be undetectable whenever you want to get even more silent snipes. Im all ears is just a helpful perk in general, since it lets you get much easier shots during the chase, it can be switched out if you are already confident in your shots.

    "Immersed" Ghostface

    Addons:

-GF Caught on Tape, Chewed Pen

    Perks:

Nurses Calling, Sloppy Butcher, Hex: The Third Seal, Whispers. While this build is not particularly effective in the "slowdown" department, it is a lot of fun and pretty thematic for GF. You want to play VERY stealthy with this build, try to never be seen and be incredibly sneaky. You want to close in on uninjured survivors and use the IRI addon to expose them really quickly for a fast down. Nurses and sloppy lets you take advantage of your near constant stealth to ambush healing survivors, third seal causes survivors to frequently be in a state of confusion leading to you creeping up on them a lot easier. Whispers makes sure you always know where to be, further lending to the idea you are a constant stalker. Really fun build, you'll feel super spooky, and often times i've had survivors tell me i jumpscared them multiple times.

Those are three builds for each killer that i think are really fun, but i have plenty more. Feel free to ask :)

That was really nice of you to take the time to give a thorough list. <3

And same. I'm really hoping he'll be a lot of fun.

  • Trapper is one of my favorites, too. Gotta respect a well placed trap! I don't know about you, but I don't often get to play a game with those Killers, unfortunately.

  • As a joke, Myers in a naughty French maid outfit. His weapon would be a feather duster, either with a sharpened end or a knife hidden inside.

Not if the incentive isn’t high enough. People are spending money regardless, hell, the last chapter (arguably the worst patch drop in DBD history) saw the highest player count on Steam ever. I’m more than certain their analyst have worked out the numbers where the cost outweigh the potential benefits. Sorry to have to be the one to break it to you.

"Sorry to have to be the one to break it to you." Why say something like that? Patronizing me adds nothing.

Many console players have stopped playing (and therefore stopped buying DLCs) because of this issue. What the stats are on that, I wish I knew. And the mega threads of posts complaining about optimization issues proves how big of an issue this is.

Companies are not immune to poor choices. They go under. Games die. Investors make mistakes. So do analysts and developers. If this issue is not important to Behaviour, then quite simply, they're wrong.

Exactly this. Just as restarting every 3-5 matches is a bandaid to cover over the real problems. If we get this option, yay! But in the end it's just another quickie "fix" instead of going into the heart of the matter for a much more effective & far-reaching solution, which unfortunately takes time as well as effort.

Agreed. It's not a pass to fixing the issue, but it's still needed.

  • @agonizing said:

Business 101 for Otz and everyone else who is saying “why hasn’t this happened yet?”

Until then it’s just an expensive project.

You spend money to make money. Games die all the time. If they want to keep making money, then they have to have a product worth the time and money of those who play it.

They... could just take the time to look at their achievements? If they really cared, they could've had people who had Legacy fill out an application, then the mods go through and check their Prestige Achievements. If they had the Achievements, they could've picked which character they wanted Prestige (it wouldn't be ALL of their Legacy, but at least they'd get one back).

Puppers (an OG Streamer) lost his because of the bug. He talked to the devs about it (he's a Fog Whisperer) and was basically told, "Sorry. It is what it is. 🤷‍♀️"

I actually did open the PS4 Pro up and clean it. I used an air can and q-tips, and I got out as much dust as I could (there was barely any in there). No change.

The fans aren't audible with any other game. I was playing Dying Light yesterday, huge city world, it was night and raining and lightning and I was throwing fireworks and shooting zombies with lasers setting them on fire... all kinds of graphical craziness was going on with 20+ zombies on my tail, and the fans were silent. iirc, the Pro can run games in 4k, it's no slacker. This is a DbD issue, through and through.

Yeah that's so strange. My regular PS4 has problems, but not like that. That sucks. I'm sorry. It makes the game unplayable. I've had to turn it off because of all the dropped frames, but if I had all of that I'd want to throw it out the window lol

Yeah, it used to be only on the "press x" screen and the offerings screen. Then the Rift/Tome area was added, and that was also awful. Then the problem spread to the campfire menu/lobby screens and super-foggy maps. And now the fans just run most of the time.

It went a couple years being only the "press x" and offerings screens. I thought it was annoying then, but boy do I miss those times. And I worry BHVR doesn't understand what a big problem this actually is. If the console is overheating, that 1. Hurts performance, and 2. Destroys the hardware. But they have ignored reports about the loud fans for years.

Check to see if you're getting a dust blockage (inside the machine, too). Since DBD makes fans run harder anyway, any blockage would make it worse. I hope it's something simple like that, because I don't get why your pro would have such a harder time than my regular PS4. That's got to be so annoying for you. Either way, I get your point. DBD causes the console systems to run harder regardless of if the state of the fan. Optimization has gotten noticeably worse for me since Nemesis (not as bad as it was, but still worse than it used to be).

I don't even mind getting sacrificed by them because they play more than me and are simply better. But yeah, moderate-tier nurses are an ego boost 😂
