  • @Cymer My favorite killers to play are Doc, Myers, and (very recently) Legion.

  • BHVR has already stated that while they are thinking of something for rank incentives, it wouldn't happen (if it does at all) until the rank system overhaul during next year's roadmap (which would start June 2020 but cover all the way through Spring 2021). This year's roadmap, which goes until Spring 2020, is already set in stone, and there is nothing in the pipe for Ranked.

So, maybe something will be added between summer 2020 and Spring 2021, but not before then.

I see some world champions making fun of Tru3, like they could do better.

And like I did in the last 8 months I challenge you, oh forum champions, show us you doing consistently better at the same ranks.

And as usual nobody will show anything

@DBDbuildsYT Sorry, but the problem here isn't Tru3's skill. He has plenty of games where he absolutely demolishes the survivors, or where the games go back and forth for a good 15+ minutes.

The issue here is the games where he does make mistakes or just isn't really playing like he normally does. Then he complains about genrush this and that, survivor being the power-role this and that, or whatever excuses he wants to make instead of just saying: "Well, that could have gone better," and moving on.

Which is fine. Except when he does that, then people bring it here to the forums like it's suddenly the Word of God, and threads like this happen . . . over and over again within a few days.

Tru3's issue is that whenever he has games that go south, it's always genrush and survivor being the power-role. But when he's on top as a killer, he's all peachy. He's a sore loser, and I stopped giving him my viewing time because of it. Same with several other of the larger DbD streamers.

  • @ReikoMori The Hills Have Eyes is another classic.

For more modern, there's also Victor Crowley from Hatchet. There's another Jason-esque killer for BHVR without having to deal with the mess that is Friday the 13th and Sean Cunningham.

  • @Dr_Trauts Because why provide cosmetic rewards for achieving certain ranks (no cost) when you can provide cosmetic rewards for grinding out a Battlepass (with cost)?

Behavior has learned that there is (apparently) decent money to be made on cosmetics with their playerbase, so I'm not shocked they went with a Battlepass instead of rank rewards. It's what happens when players keep throwing money at a company, and they see a winning formula.

  • @ReikoMori I knew every one of the killers you mentioned. I was born in 1972, and well remember the original My Bloody Valentine as well as Sleepaway Camp. :D

Wife and I also enjoyed both Collector films.

With that list, I'm shocked you didn't mention Three Finger from Wrong Turn.

  • Myers and Freddy, because I only really play DbD for those two of my favorite childhood horror icons.

(I also play F13, still, for the third icon.)

  • @Peanits Thanks for the reply, man. You and the team are awesome! 😁

@Weck That is good to hear. Looking forward to getting into the game tonight. I missed playing.

  • @The_Manlet My point was only that this thing isn't going to end in a year or two. It's just the first phase. Cunningham has already shown himself to be unwilling to give Miller a cut, and when Miller goes after the next phase, win or not, Cunningham is likely not going to cave unless financially forced to.

At this point, I would not shocked if Cunningham is attempting to draw it all out in the hopes that Miller runs out of money to fight it at some point.

But my point to the person I replied to was that I would not expect this to be over by the 2020 or 2021 dates mentioned for the current suit. I don't see it being the final suit. Miller isn't doing this just for the first film's screenplay. He's directly talked about the money Friday the 13th is worth and how he saw none of it. He's going to eventually go after Jason Voorhees as a direct result of his original screenplay, because adult Jason has never been separated from the original film at any point in the franchise. He was always a result of it, not the least of which was Pamela's death. Something that has been shown repeatedly with adult Jason via her decapitated head. That, just by itself, establishes it as a direct result of Miller's (now) original film's copyright.

Friday the 13th Part 2, which introduces the adult Jason, begins with the Final Girl from the original film and continues her story, including direct flashbacks to the Pamela events from the original film. Thereby creating the direct connection between the adult Jason films and the original film.

Never mind how in some films, the "legend" of Jason drowning as a kid and coming back and murdering people and his mother being beheaded was blatantly stated. Such as in Freddy vs Jason and the 2009 remake. Both films which have Cunningham as a Producer and thus also directly connected to him, the franchise, and therefore the original film.

Cunningham, over the decades, has allowed adult Jason Voorhees to maintain a direct connection to the original film. Friday the 13th Part 2 clearly established that. And that is going to allow Miller to eventually sue for Jason revenue.

But to do that, he first needed to re-claim his rights to the original, establishing screenplay. That's phase one.

  • @ProfoundEnding Well, I fully believe it's going to be a long wait. Miller is ultimately going to win this thing, of that I am convinced. And since he already won the copyright he was seeking in a lower court for the original Friday the 13th film, I really don't see the Appellate Court suddenly siding with Cunningham. He simply didn't have enough evidence to show in the original trial to prove that the work-relationship with Miller was structured in such a way that it prevents him from re-claiming the rights.

As of right now, unless I am forgetting a point, his current victory gave him the rights to the original film, but not the Friday the 13th title nor the mask wearing Jason Voorhees. Cunningham is fighting tooth and nail via appeal against that.

And with good reason. Anyone who's worked in entertainment (I have, for over 25 years) knows that if Miller retains this victory, a new lawsuit is coming. Why? Because he would own the rights to the original film, which established the Jason Voorhees character. He will then likely file the next stage suit for the entire Jason character. The adult, mask wearing Jason Voorhees is a direct result of:

    1) The original child character he created that drowned in Crystal Lake per the original film, and . . .

    2) Maintains those events from the original film since Jason and many other later elements are all directly derived from Miller's original film and character.

Miller is not going to ignore that money from Jason Voorhees. This entire fight has been about the money that Friday the 13th is worth. And without the original screenplay that he has thus far won the copyright fight for, there would not be a mask wearing Jason Voorhees that made all that money, in the first place.

Miller needed to establish copyright ownership of the original screenplay before he could then go after the Jason Voorhees character that came about only because of that screenplay.

Unless Cunningham pulls a lucky horseshoe out of his rear end, this fight is long from over. It's just in its first phase.

  • @KillermainBTWm8 I agree with what you said. And although it takes 10 minutes to trigger unless Jason is bullied (then it triggers faster), I actually like the Rage mechanic they added.

Hell, even when I play Quick Match over there still to this day, I like his Rage mechanic as counselor. It means I am really going to run like hell from Jason.

The franchise as a whole is one singular license. Illfonic wanted to add more content to the game, but the license holder for some reason pulled out of the established deal they already had. So when he pulled out of the deal they were effectively forbidden to add anymore actual content such as new Jason variants, counselor variants, and maps. Since their entire game is built around the license and they suddenly got access pulled it left them in a situation where they can still sale and maintain the game, but not add new content to it.

@ReikoMori I'll be honest, while I like DbD, I like the core design elements in F13 a hell of a lot more. From the counselor various escape methods, to being able to fight back, to managing fear. I like that both sides use the same third-person view, not one in third and one in first. And I love the various kills that can be unlocked for Jason as well as the environmental kills.

Hell, I even have fun on nights when I just want to relax and not PvP being able to play hard bots or the single player challenges (still haven't done them all).

Hindsight being what it is, I wish Cunningham had never contacted Gun Media and offered them the F13 game license, and that the project had stayed as the original Summer Camp, non-licensed game.

I really wish a studio with the ability to properly handle a game would come out with a game similar to F13 in core elements.

  • I, for one, do not want Jason in DbD. It's bad enough we already have Myers and Freddy reduced to killing their prey by putting them on hooks (unless you use a Mori, which tends to just piss off survivors). The hooks make sense with Leatherface, as he actually put victims on hooks at times in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (both the original and the 2003 remake), but are just anticlimactic with those two.

The last thing I'd want is for Jason to be reduced to a hooking machine. I'd much prefer he one day get his own game again that does his killing style justice.

  • Never mind. I misread the post I was replying to.

    https://www.twitch.tv/Otzdarva

He also has a bunch of videos on the same Youtube channel as the one you posted, "not Otzdarva".

He's my personal favorite because he's so detailed and methodical in explaining his strategies and he does a good job keeping his composure unlike some streamers.

@Xboned Much obliged. Just followed him.

  • @Xboned I don't usually watch Streamers, but I appreciate his video so will give him a shot. What's his actual Twitch channel?

  • This thread is getting bookmarked. Please, folks, keep 'em coming!

@HatCreature Thanks for the video link. Also bookmarked.

  • @Xboned Precisely. And as some others have already stated here and elsewhere, the upcoming change is okay for existing players and some Vets, but will do nothing for New Player Retention.

@joker7997 All well and good. But DbD's largest problem is that after every free weekend and 50% sale, the player numbers (at least on PC where they can be tracked) jump up, and then plummet back down to normal after the weekend ends, or within a few weeks after the 50% sale and new players don't stay.

It's not long-term healthy for the game to have such a poor New Player Retention. Vets are not going to be playing forever, and new players joining, playing, and paying are needed to eventually replace them. When new players aren't retained over and over again, there is a longevity problem.

Right now, DbD is only three years old with absolutely no viable competition in the field. But its success, due in large part to that lack of competition, is already drawing attention to the genre. I wager that within 2-3 years, something is going to come along that isn't completely mishandled like F13, Last Year, and Hide or Die, and then DbD will begin to suffer for its poor new player retention.

And I'm not convinced that Behavior will be able to adapt to the situation. Dead by Daylight seems to have been more "lightning in a bottle" for them than anything else. They've already tried to capture it again with Deathgarden, tried twice in fact, and failed both times.

  • @Rydog The fact that anyone would have to come in and claim that it would cause players to run out of things to do just speaks volumes to a weak core game design, then.

I played Overwatch since Beta and never ran out of things to do. Why? Because I was constantly looking to improve on certain characters while learning others. I only left Overwatch recently because of RoleQ and the fact that I'm burned out and done with shooters.

I played Paladins for years. Why? Because I didn't have to grind to unlock the cards to do my Champion builds after the OB64 fiasco was reversed and fixed. I can experiment with any build on any character right out of the gate. What kept me engaged? Learning new Champions, getting better with my main Champions, and experimenting with builds, some serious and some meme builds. Again, I only left Paladins due to shooter genre burnout. Not because I ran out of things to do.

A grind to "keep people playing" is just a blatant Band-Aid for weak core design, especially in a PvP game.

What is the engagement factor in DbD for me? Learning killers, improving with killers, experimenting with Perk builds on Killer and Survivor. Or, at least I can maybe experiment one of these days once I sleep through the absolutely asinine grind and RNG.

What keeps driving me away from DbD, which is the reason why I've never played it consistently in the 16 months I've owned it? The asinine grind coupled with the bloodweb RNG. Hell, three family members are major Stranger Things fans. They saw the announcement for the DLC out in the wilds of the internet and were interested in buying DbD and the DLC. I explained the grind for new players to them and how the upcoming "changes" do nothing for new players.

    They decided not to buy.

  • @SureSpear Yeah, I've always heard good things about the Final Fantasy MMO. Especially as it's grown after the reboot.

Lol I'm aware. What does that have to do with my comment? They can negotiate with different companies at the same time.

@brokedownpalace Assuming, of course, that the Licensor is interested in negotiating for cosmetics in the first place. I've worked on licenses in the past, including for Evil Dead and A Nightmare on Elm Street. The Evil Dead licensors, for example, were a hell of a lot more open to things than the licensors for Elm Street. Can't speak for Halloween, as I never worked on a license for that one.

  • @SureSpear That's the MMO, right? Never tried it. But I played MMOs as my main genre of gaming from 1999 until 2016. I stopped when Overwatch came out. Tried again in WoW with Legion and BFA, and recently with City of Heroes: Homecoming, since retail CoH was my main MMO for its 8 years of life.

Sadly, at 46 years old, I think my love of that style of game is a thing of the past. Just can't seem to get into them anymore. While I was never into shooters until Overwatch, and am unlikely to ever play shooters again, I think I prefer the quicker in-and-out games nowadays. Something with short 10-20 minute matches.

I'm really enjoying the iconic horror style of Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th for that. I get the quick games and then can logout after a few, and also get to revisit my childhood horror icons from the 80s. Being a major horror fan helps, too. Hell, I make part of my living in the horror genre.

  • Killer. Myers. 'Nuff said. :)

  • @SureSpear Which has gotten even worse under RoleQ. After 3+ years, the wife and I uninstalled. Long live DBD!

  • I don't pass the time. If the lobby takes too long, I close out the game and go play something else. Not being sarcastic, just honest.

I don't watch YouTube very often. As for Netflix and streaming channels, whenever I watch something I like to get immersed in the characters and stories, and just as often the story's structure. Probably because of what I do for a living. So, I don't enjoy trying to watch a show or movie while waiting for a game queue. I prefer to do that in my comfortable chair, in front of the television, undisturbed.

  • I punish it.

Why? Because I'm playing a slasher genre "killing machine," and if you taunt the killer you get punished.

But it can lose the match?

I don't care. I play games with clear win conditions to win, like Overwatch or a MOBA or what have you. In Dead by Daylight, I just play for my slasher horror fandom and sometimes to play one of my favorite 80s horror icons. Nothing more.

  • @TAG Yep. Sadly, in my many years of online gaming, I've seen this happen before. Hell, even to Blizzard.

  • @gcardoso said:

thanks :) but wow.. only 20000 players..

@gcardoso Yeah, which also puts it within the top 20 games on Steam. And during the day when it hits 25k+, it's sometimes even higher on that listing.

DbD is doing fine, especially for a game in a niche game genre.

  • I mean, what else do they have going? Certainly not Deathgarden, which has pretty much gone 0-2 already.

I think it's a safe assumption that DBD will keep going as long as people keep paying and playing. Hell, it isn't like it has any competition yet, either.

  • @DudeDelicious Hell, honestly, I just play DBD to get my Slasher horror fandom. I'm a kid of the 80s (born in '72) so I grew-up on these horror icons. I remember in the 80s on my uncle's massive farm where I spent the summers. I had a hockey mask and fake machette, and my younger siblings, cousins, and I would use the cornfields and two story barn and such and play Friday the 13th for hours.

I don't even worry about a 4k as killer. I just want to hook all four at least once for the BBQ stacks for the BP gain. After that, if they all escape I don't even care.

As survivor, it's the same thing here as counselor in F13: I just want to be hunted by the killing machine. For me, DBD (and F13) are the same thing as the 80s setting in the Stranger Things show: childhood nostalgia.

  • @joker7997 Lobby dodging is not going to be stopped. Hell, I dodged certain maps in Overwatch.

I used to get Nepal a lot in Overwatch. Got sick of it, so dodged on the hero select screen where there is zero penalty for doing so in Quick Play. Ditto for Hanamura.

Sometimes, if I went Support and my teammates went 5-DPS heroes in hero select, I dodged.

If the goal is to stop lobby dodging, forget it. It isn't a goal that can be accomplished. One way or another, for one reason or another, people will dodge.

Otherwise, soft-throwing the match is easy. As survivor, just "make a mistake" and get downed and then suicide on the first hook. As killer, just apply zero pressure and let the five gens pop. Throw, let the match end, move on to the next match.

Players will always find a way out of a match, team-up, or map, that they don't want to play.

  • Yes. Peanits stated in a couple of threads about MM that it is bugged right now. They aren't sure why it's bugged, because they didn't do any tweaks on their end. They're trying to find what's causing the bug, but have nothing to report to us as of yet.

I've actually stopped playing until they get it fixed.

Really hope they figure it out before the DLC goes live. Because if Stranger Things does bring in new players, this MM bug will surely drive them away. I haven't played in months and just came back. Due to being away for a bit, my rank dropped all the way to Rank 19 thanks to multiple Rank resets, and at Rank 19 killer I was facing teams of purple and red survivors. That should never happen. And it wasn't an SWF thing, because there were absolutely no low-rank survivors on the teams.

  • @Micheal_Myers I'd definitely be up for something like that!

  • @Micheal_Myers Matchmaking-wise, F13 has none. I just make counselor my spawn preference over there because I absolutely love all the different goals and ways to escape for them. I also love having to manage my fear level.

I get bored to tears playing survivor, here.

But F13 has a host of issues, I agree.

I just wish a studio would come along and do a new game in the vein of F13. A studio that would actually care about the damned game like BHVR does DbD. Pound for pound, I like the F13 game play a hell of a lot more. But Gun Media and Illfonic were horrible.

I like DbD, but give me a solid game with the core game play design aspects of F13, and I'd probably not look at DBD again.

  • @Micheal_Myers Well, Peanits said that something bugged with the matchmaker, but they don't know why because they didn't make any tweaks recently on their end. So, the team is going through all the code trying to find what changed and went wrong. So far, he said, they've nothing to report to us.

I reset all the way back down to rank 19 due to not playing for many months. The other night when I came back, as a Rank 19 killer, I had three games in a row against all purple and red survivor combinations. Okay, my highest rank ever was rank 12 because I don't play DbD steadily. Needless to say, I got stomped to hell and back by the survivors. I DC'ed about two minutes into that third game, and I never DC. But I did, then closed down the game and haven't launched it again since. I've just been doing the solo challenges in Friday the 13th, and playing the occasional lobby over there.

They need to figure the bug out and fix it before the DLC goes live. Otherwise, I will bet real money that they will not retain new players that this DLC might bring in. Not with how MM is currently functioning.

  • @Carpemortum Well, one thing is true: The matchmaking is arbitrary as all hell for the past two weeks or so. :)

  • @The_Manlet Priceless. I absolutely love it!

  • He didn't patrol the gens. He spent all the time messing with portals and chasing one guy just . . . why?

I can't even fathom why he would comment about "teams being this quick" when until he got 3-gen popped, he didn't even pressure the gens.

He's red ranks, he knows better. But he played like a yellow or green rank in the beginning of that match.

He's not new at this game. Those three gens were on him.

  • Peanits stated last week that the Wiki posting was not true. He told people to ignore it. They have one planned, but are not yet ready to officially announce it.

Behavior will always announce a Bloodhunt. If you see it elsewhere and Behavior hasn't announced it, better to not expect it.

  • Oh Christ, no. When I play DbD, I play a vast majority on the killer side. Why? Because crouching in front of a generator and holding M1 and hitting the occasional spacebar for 80 seconds cures my insomnia.

As a killer main, the last thing I want is longer gen times. I'd never play survivor again.

Meanwhile, when I play F13, I'd rather play counselor than Jason. I find counselor a hell of a lot more fun and engaging.

Behavior doesn't need to increase gen times, they need to create other things to do other than searching chests or cleansing totems, which are just more M1 simulators to begin with.

Don't get me wrong, I like DbD for what it is, but it gets boring for me fast on survivor side as it is.

  • @justarandy In other threads, some folks mentioned that it happened right after the last update they did. I personally don't know, as I was just coming back after not playing for several months. But if that's the case, then that's where it screwed up.

Just like in many games, I've played Test Servers and things were fine in certain areas. The patch gets sent to live, and all kinds of bugs suddenly materialize that weren't on the test server. Code is evil. :)

  • @PolarBear Now that's just untrue. I never voiced an opinion about Legion, and my mother doesn't even play Dead by Daylight to know anything about Legion.

  • Peanits stated last week that the Wiki claim of Sept 5th was wrong, and that while they have a Bloodhunt planned, they aren't ready to officially announce the date for it yet.

  • @GODQueenEvy I've no doubt they'll eventually find the culprit in the code and get a fix into the game. Peanits said they didn't make any adjustments on their end to MM, so why the issue came out is a question. Sadly, that also means that they probably don't have a point of reference (i.e. a tweak) to start from, either.

I just hope they get it sorted out before the DLC goes live, or at least delay it until they do. Because with MM the way it is right now, I can't see them retaining a bunch of new players that might give the game a try for Stranger Things.

The highest rank I ever hit as Killer was Rank 12 because I only play occasionally. And believe me when I tell you, I got there too fast and didn't belong there. I didn't play in months and reset back to Rank 19 in that time. I did three matches last night, and every one of them had purple and red rank survivors.

Well, two matches, really. On the third match, I just DC'ed and exited the game entirely. And I never DC. But that's how unplayable it is for me.

So, I've just been messing around in Overwatch trying out the RoleQ in Quick Play (I hate it), but mostly playing the single player challenges over in Friday the 13th.

  • I'm not buying the DLC nor even playing the game until Matchmaking is fixed. Peanits said they're hunting down the issue that popped up out of the blue, so they're trying. But the game just isn't fun for me constantly going against players way above my Rank and skill level.

  • @megaweenieman Last week Peanits stated in another thread that the Sept 5th leak was untrue, and that they would announce the event before it starts. He said there is one planned, but that they weren't ready to officially announce the date yet.

  • @RIP_Legion I was wondering the same thing at first. But at least here on PC, the steam chart numbers haven't gone down in the past two weeks (when this MM fiasco started), and actually went up by about 2k daily peak during that time.

So, that made me start to question my lack of player hypothesis. Then Peanits responded in a couple of threads that something is broken, happened unexpectedly, and they're trying to track it down.

Given how much code is no doubt behind the matchmaker, I imagine it isn't an easy find considering they didn't do anything to it that could have caused the mess-up, so don't really have a point of reference to start from.

I've no doubt they'll eventually find it and fix. It isn't like they have an option after all, as it would hurt the game otherwise. And they wouldn't want that on a normal day, never mind with the massively hyped Stranger Things DLC coming down the pipe already. I'm just playing other games until they get it fixed. I'm a low-skill, low-rank casual and only occasional player. This MM is unplayable for me.
