I think we all just need to accept camping and tunnelling as part of the unchanging, god given order of things.

As natural as rainfall , sunshine or the oink of a new born pig.

And yet the devs are starting to punish killers for camping even though they know how survivors abused it already in the first PTB

    Introduction

Welcome fellow citizens of the Fog, I am the Modern Fable and I wish to review an ongoing debate or discussion rather, that has persisted throughout the community for as long as I have been in it, and surely long before: camping (and tunneling). However, preceding the review itself, I shall provide a short list of what I am about to cover.

    Definitions For Reference
    Perception
    Previous Suggestions
    Behavior's Recent Actions (2.3.0)
    My Suggestions

It should be noted beforehand that there is no perfect solution to camping or tunneling. While the developers may choose to make harsher punishments for doing so or give rewards for choosing not to, there will always be players who will choose to do so for various reasons, regardless of the consequences.

    Definitions

To start off the discussion of camping/tunneling, we must first establish a common ground to properly examine and communicate our ideas with one other. While exact definitions for camping and tunneling may vary wildly amongst players, for the purpose of this discussion I will personally provide a definition for each, and whenever I or anyone else confers about them in this particular discussion, do so with these definitions in mind.

Camping: The act of remaining in close proximity to a hooked Survivor as a Killer for an extended period of time.

Tunneling: The act of repeatedly hitting and hooking a single Survivor as a Killer while actively ignoring other Survivors.

    Perception

Now with the definitions set, I will delve into various outlooks on camping/tunneling as well as previous suggestions from the community I have witnessed in my short time with this community. Beginning with the negative perceptions of camping/tunneling, many players have made remarks along the lines of "_____ is unfun, not skillful, and toxic." Although other players may defend this gameplay instances with statements such as "_____ is a valid strategy, not the player's fault, and a part of the game." In both examples, the testimonies of these players are opinions, personal conclusions constructed by their particular experiences with Dead by Daylight.

Previous Suggestions and Behavior's Recent Actions (2.3.0)

Interestingly enough, much of the negative and positive assessments of camping/tunneling are not entirely dichotomized, or to say, not directly opposed with one another. Rather the assorted opinions tend to narrow in on different aspects of camping/tunneling, but let's move on to player suggestions. Players have made their fair share of attempts at tackling camping/tunneling such as harsher Emblem penalties for these actions, Blood Point reductions, or bans as well as many other punishments. There has also been actions taken by Behavior themselves recently (2.3.0), one being a change to Devout rewarding hooking all Survivors, and the other penalizing Chaser for remaining within 16 meters of a hooked Survivor. Two different approaches to tackling the presumed issue, a reward and a punishment.

    My Suggestions

Onto my personal suggestions, I'd prefer to undertake the situation with a carrot, rather than a stick. The first thing that must be considered before trying to stop players from camping/tunneling is understanding why an individual would choose to do it in the first place. The possible reasons for doing each are numerous so I'll provide a short lineup.

Killer may have seen the specific player as a larger threat
Killer may have developed a personal dislike for the specific player
Killer may have discovered other Survivors in close proximity to the hook
Killer may have Perks or Add-Ons that support this particular strategy
Killer may have reasons to confirm a kill
Killer may lack incentives to do otherwise
    Etc..

While there are numerous methods at deterring players from camping/tunneling, I'd like to particularly avoid punishments to Emblems as the effects may often actually be incentives by further providing means to De-Pip, considering there are currently no benefits to rising through the ranks, although that is a separate issue that I have examined in another discussion. However, moving onto my possible solutions, I'd like to reward the player for choosing more widely enjoyable gameplay strategies and interacting with different Survivors often without heavily punishing them for doing the opposite. I would also like to compensate the Survivor when they are the target of camping or tunneling where they are currently not, despite the fact that it is often providing advantages to other Survivors and your team as a whole by deterring the Killer's attention, but let's go over the possible changes.

    Killer Changes:

Hooking different Survivors in succession rewards 0.5 Devout Points and 100 Chaser Points (Max 6 and 1,200)
Hooking different Survivors in succession rewards 800 Blood Points (Max 9,600)

    Survivor Changes:

While within 24 meters or Line of Sight of the Killer while on hook rewards .5 Benevolent Points per second (Max 90)
While within 24 meters or Line of Sight of the Killer while on hook rewards 10 Blood Points per second (Max 1,800)
Being hooked in succession rewards 15 Benevolent Points (Max 45)
Being hooked in succession twice will automatically reward a Bronze Unbroken
Being hooked in succession rewards 1500 Blood Points (Max 3,000)

    Conclusion

I want to reiterate once more that there are no definite solutions to camping or tunneling, there will always be players who do and don't it for different reasons, some more reasonable than others. As opposed to punishing players for potentially practical uses of these strategies, I find it for more effective to reward players that actively choose gameplay strategies which involve all players in the game and are more widely accepted as "fun." At the same time, in the instances where these strategies are employed, be it out of necessity or otherwise, I wish to properly reward the players in question whose experiences are possibly being diminished. Regardless, feel free to discuss, I appreciate to seeing new ideas and receiving feedback. That's all for now, I am the Modern Fable, and I'll see you guys in the Fog.

I like how you structured your post.
Yes, I agree that there must be INCENTIVES not to tunnel like you suggested, but the core issue of the game is that gentime forces you to tunnel if you actually want to get sth done. Tunneling the first survivor to death is the most efficient strategy to earn BP and emblem points because you need to slow down the game first. Your suggestion to give killers extra BP for hooking other survivors doesnt change that, are these BP in an extra category btw? if not, then there is no reason not to tunnel because you will max out the sacrifice category if you do well anyway (doing well = tunneling)

Also, I dont believe that the camp punishment from the PTB actually makes it into the game, but we will see^^

Just curious, I play on PS4 and I want to see if anyone else is having trouble with getting bloodpoints from a DCing Killer. I've heard that if a Killer DCs during a game, you are supposed to get all of your accumulated blood points, but it seems like that only works 10% of the time. The other day I started with 2136 bloodpoints. Played three games, each time the Killer Dced (Once when we opened the Exit Gate). By the end of those three games, I still had 2136 blood points. Than yesterday I played a game, killer DCed near the beginning, and I gained a few hundred bloodpoints for repairing a gen.

    Is this a bug?

Also, to contribute to this post. I feel a DCing Survivor should net the Killer 5000 bloodpoints, and a DCing Killer gives each Survivor 20,000. Basically, give them the full worth of the game they've played.

As far as I know it depends on how the killer leaves the game. If he uses the menu-way of leaving, then you are given your 5k escape points+already earned points. but if he closes the application on PS4, then you get nothign I believe (cant confirm though, PC player here)

Since killers lose their addons, but survivors keep their items, your suggestion wouldnt be fair (not that the current situation is fair  )

But DCing should be punished at its core

Okay....then explain all this to the  "quitters", that they don't have to quit while beeing teabaged, provocated, facing endless looping survivors and playing against SWF all the time......if there won't happen some changes in the near future .. there will be no killers left to play against...

Simply go afk in such games, thats what I do too.
When you hit ranks where you are bullied by SWF, then its time to derank anyway

They are holding the game hostage, 3 out of 10 games I have survivors like this, that likes to troll the killer, stalling for 5-10 minutes refusing to leave, in rare cases 20+ minutes

give kIllers the ability to Surrender, like in Identity V, just so we can move on to another game instead of wasting time with this person. I don't mind giving him the escape, just please fix this so we are not wasting time on a game that should have been ended

not even camping the hatch and they still refuse to leave most of the time

1 minute after the gates have been powered the killer should be able to instadown everyone.

  • @will_i_am_14_85 said:
As they are never going to add in a 'opt out of vs SWF (because no SWF group would get a game) at least give killers some info on the people they are facing so they can at least lobby dodge.

    It's really a waste of everyone's time if a rank 16 killer has 2 rank 2's, a rank 7 and a rank 15 in their game. <--- personal experience

Rank has been displayed in the past and it was a bad idea.

Instead a SWF should face a killer at the rank equal to the highest rank in the team.
That would only be fair, because the comeptent survivor can 1vs1 you anyway otherwise

  • @Mercury said:
Is this ever going to be... I guess 'fixed'? Shouldn't you recover 75% faster when hit by the pallet, why are pallet saves an exception?

Because otherwise you would be able to catch the survivor again
    Classic killer perks....

  • Basement is meant to be dangerous, the killer is supposde to have the upper hand there.

Wiggling is a mechanic introduced such that the killer cant bring every survivor he downed into the basement, it is in no way meant to be a free escape.

There are so much hooks on the map because roughly one year ago when sabotaging was stronger, it was common to let all survivors bleed out because there simply were no hooks to hook them. Survivors complained, so ofc that got fixed too.
Sabotaging is buffed next patch and hooks are gonna be reduced again, so I wonder where this will lead this time.....

If you have problems with camping killers, simply equip BT. Unless you face a chainsaw, you can unhook them guaranteed with your SWF coordination bdy bodyblocking and BT. (one of the reasons the game is so broken btw)

  • @serabeth90 said:
I don't play Trapper at all so I can't give you specific tips, but I've played this game for 3 months and all I've learned is that when you see the survivor with the brightly colored shirt and flashlight wiggling around near a loop to get your attention....DON'T DO IT. You know you want to; they look so tasty and sometimes if you're slow to bite, they'll even give you a free hit. They have decisive strike and/or dead hard, so they can afford to give you that one hit. Hit them if you must, but DON'T FOLLOW. Unless (and I main Hag, so I assume this is similar advice for you) you happen to have a trap somewhere in their loop that they may not know about ;).

If you play trapper or hag against a SWF and are in the position that you have to ignore a certain survivor, then you already lost because you will never be able to use your power.
Thanks to coordination, the team always knows where your traps are ....

  • 3 gens, two safe saves+1 heal and looping a bit would automatically result in a pip, I guess you lied a bit about what you actually accomplished

Btw, the emblem system has made piping too easy for both sides, if anything, then it must become harder to pip, not easier

    1. Being Hookswarmed is now punishable. FOR THE KILLER. How is it that i risk my pip when survivors are circling around the hooked survivor like flies to a turd? Why do i have to let them get away with it?

Remove the chaser penalty or introduce a punishment for staying to close to a hooked survivor as a survivor.

    1. Perks
Vigil and Streetwise need some buffs, but these are simply not gonna cut it at all. No ones care about 15 extra seconds when the bonus isnt high enough to give a ######### in the first place.

Beast of Prey is still tied to Bloodlust. That means its still bad.

    1. Surprising lack of content.
      No Freddy rework?
      No DS change?
A single change for the spirit?
      Just these few perk changes?

Invulnerability for the unhooked guy, easier unhook animation and now emblem punishment for the killer.

    Yes, the direction is obvious

You forgot to mention the sabotage buff and the slugg nerf together with less hooks on the map, that might become "interesting"

We will see, still weird. I know bout early drops but this doesn't happen all the time when it is hit for hit.

When it only happened in this match and it felt weird, then it was most likely due to bad latency. If you notice bad latency within the game, adapt on the fly and take into accoutn that there will be a little delay

@DeadByFlashlight counterpoint: if the ranking system didn't have some merrit or effectiveness, you wouldn't need to derank.  You derank to face less effective survivors, end of story.  There is no other reason.

side topic: Everyone complains so much that Billy/Nurse are "the only tier one killerz"  if that were actually the  case you should be able to derank from the uppers simply by using Freddy.

No, because piping is too easy, for both sides

You are playing the wrong game if you are searching for competitive matches

This isn't some participation award, sing-song, lets be friends game. Its not against robots. Its designed 100% with the intention of being competitive player vs players. I think YOU are playing the wrong game, because you can't handle the competition. Its the competition that makes this game fun, otherwise they could just make a "generator repair simulator" and leave the killer out completely.

Its not fault your fault the ranking system is bogus, so I don't necessarily blame you for deranking. The ranking system is broken and you are getting to a higher level of skill than you actually are, since when you derank you feel like you get better games. (Although, if "better games" means you are going from fewer kills to 3k or 4k a match, then again, you're just picking on new players.)

Its the way you're deranking by making it OBVIOUSLY a thrown a match. This feels like a waste of time for everyone, and thats my problem. Not that you derank, its that you waste our time. Just play crappy. Lose the chase, play dumb, etc. Waste more of your time, than mine, since you're the one not playing the game the way its meant.

Funny that you use this wording, because PARTICIPATION rewards are exactly what pips have become.

A rank system where everyone can reach rank 1 cant be taken serious, imagine if you would reach the highest leauge in another competitive game like CSGO or mobas like dota/lol. That would be laughable.

And I recommend taking a look at the official tournament of DBD, it was a big joke because DBD has been designed for casual gameplay, not competitive one. In fact, when people are trying to play competitively, then this is called toxic behaviour by the community, thats how "competitive" the game really is

Really? Is that in the patchnotes?

    In the ptb patchnotes, yes

I swear to god, I am still missing finding that note. What category is it under? There are a ton of notes in that PTB build.

    Under emblem changes, it says:

Chaser: Remaining within a close (16 meters) proximity of a hooked Survivor will reduce the quality of this Emblem over time.

Then you're not afk anymore - how about firing up your chainsaw and making some gaping chest wounds? But more importantly, if rank 1 games are that harrowing, and killers are unviable, then you should be able to derank simply by playing, right? If as you say, the deck is so stacked against killers you'd be down at rank 10 again in no time.

It's so bizarre to argue about it, but it's just like that: you play well, you rank up. Then you're stuck with players who are good. Challenge. Enjoy it. Just please please don't waste other people's time by DC-ing or being afk.

That would be true if the ranking system was viable and working well, reflecting the player's skills.

    It's not.

Yeah ok, there are several problems with the emblem system, but it's still a good indicator, albeit imperfect. Gatekeeper and Devout are fine, I think Malicious too. It's only Chaser that's unfair to some killers.
But back to the original point: both DC-ing and being afk is unacceptable. Anyone who wants to derank: please find another way.

You used to be able to derank by slugging, but this isnt possible anymore.

If you are aware of another way to derank, please tell me

    How about this: don't.
Honestly, trying to derank (and posting about it on the forums!) means two things:

    • You want easy matches
    • While you want easy matches, you still want to advertise how cool you are, having made it to high ranks.
      Sorry, but it's kinda obvious.

Honestly, I dont give a ######### about your opinion about this.

I am a nice guy and even asked the survivors how they prefer it, afk or DC, survivors simply DC every game to derank.

I am simply not gonna bother playing at high lvl if the game continues to be unbalanced and the devs not doing anything about it, the next midchapter patch is a perfect example for this, once again....

So what about that alternative way to derank? Or was that just trashtalking?

Well, that was my impression. I could be wrong. But to answer your original question, I think it looks like there isn't really a way to derank without screwing with other players. Honestly: how much enjoyment would you find as survivor in a game when killer is afk? Or DC-s? Not much I imagine.

Let me ask you something though. You say on high rank the game is unbalanced. What does that mean? I mean to you, personally. I assume you don't expect to get 4K all the time, but how many 0K games? 9 out of 10? 7 out of 10? Less? I think if you get 1-2 kills in about half of your games, that's not too bad, if it's a good game otherwise.

As survivor I faced afk deranking killers too. I simply go dens while doing other stuff (hell you can only have to hold M1, dont even need to care about skillchecks), then I simply leave. I consider that as a free BP donation

I dont give a damn about your 4k 1-2k definition of "balanced". When the survivors are able to cyber-bully mean and I have no tools to prevent/punish them properly, then I will simply avoid those games.

Everyone has different definitions of "good games", if you are fine with teh current situation then go ahead and play at those ranks. Personally, I will play DBD casually now until certain problems are fixed

And btw, I would prefer it too if we had a casual mode

@switch kind of think you are the injured party. How a DS change which we don't even know what the end result of that change is , was somehow go to change the game entirely. I have a feeling it wasn't going to help you all that much. They continue to rework things and people still are not happy on both sides. Maybe just play the game or play something else. I mean you do like to quote Cote. Didn't he recommend that. Maybe this isn't the game for you.

wanna bet 100$ that they will scrap dstrike idea forever?
I play this game since beta, you probably werent here when they tested 1 heal only ptb and scraped that like was nothing.

Just like the SC idea got scraped

One advice, go for a wired headset... especially in that price range

    No.

For $100-$120 you can find a BEAST wireless headset.  Better if you have PS4 because the bluetooth wireless tech is superior

The wireless stuff costs always more and you basically get no benefit from it. You are sitting at one position anyway, why does that wire bother you?

I only had one great wireless headphone so far, the one I am currently using and it was way above 200, but even that one I still use in wired mode 95% of the time

Yes her base kit is way too weak, but unfortunately not all killers are meant to be viable

I feel like it's more "not all killers are meant to be good for everybody". I've met Trappers, Wraiths, Freddy's etc. who are really good. They just know when to do what, and genuinely enjoy to play their choice of killer. If all killers were so overpowered that anybody who picked it up would 4k with them every game in a few minutes, it wouldn't be fun, interesting or challenging at all to learn something new. And it wouldn't feel good to win either.

The best trapper I know is lefthandentity. He got demolished during the official tournament because trapper is simply unviable against a competent SWF.

If you actually know a streamer/youtuber that does well against these kind of games, then please link him.

I would love to improve my trapper gameplay such that I can play my most favourite killer on high rank, but as far as I see it now, the gameplay mechanics limit/ voice comms him too much.

Usually it boils down being a M1 killer, once you had a game against a SWF with OoO, you will understand

And yet a Freddy won the console round.

Lefty lost hard because he couldn't set traps early on the map that was selected. The spawn points were always the same, so one survivor just ran to the spawn point of the killer and distracted him..he was in a chase within 5 seconds. "Tournament" play is also completely different to regular games and this game has never been tournament ready nor will it ever be.

Not sure why you think being an M1 killer against SWF's with OoO is difficult either. Maybe for you.

Im not gonna argue about consoles here, stuff is different over there.

Survivors can always run directly up to the killer, you can memorize spawn locations on any map, this is a common strategies beyond killers and survivors even hear the heart beat, so.....

Yes, DBD is not tournament ready because it was designed for solo players and SWF obviously breaks it. Thanks for supporting my argument

Supporting your argument? LOL It was never tournament ready BEFORE SWF's. If you think otherwise you're delusional. Asymmetrical games with so much RNG will never be "competitive" ;)

*edit - oh, I wasn't trying to argue consoles...just mentioned Freddy as you thought trapper being played at high ranks wasn't viable, which again, is incorrect. All killers are viable at all ranks.

Freddy isnt viable against competent survivors either and everybody knows that.

For you and the other trash killers that inhabit the forums, sure. I do well with him at rank 1, so do many others that you don't hear from, because they don't whine and complain :)

*edit - sorry, don't get me wrong, Freddy is awful and yes against competent survivors you probably won't win.

    Well then...

    Yeah @DeadByFlashlight, we're all just bad. ;)

How does this show you are a good killer?

Are you trying to say rank is indicative of skill? Oh god. Well, you're wrong there too. It's just a measurement of time played buddy. Try again :)

Try again, as you wish (even through I wasn't saying rank is indicative of skill but I'll ignore that)! :p

My ranks shows that I actually am able to play against a SWF and I'm not afraid to derank for better games. However at red ranks, survivors are really optimistic but not all survivors are since nowadays survivors are kinda boosted. My point in bring up my rank is that there's a lot of sweaty SWF at rank 1 and most of the time they are really optimistic. Not every survivor is great due to the boosted rank system but overall, I played against a lot of sweaty SWF as a Spirit and I get around 1-2 sacrifices. You can call me bad all you want but the truth is, you don't have much of a chance when you get these types of SWF teams. That's why the Spirit needs something to help her correct herself since there's a ton of BS that a survivor can do to a Spirit player.

Your rank shows you play against sweaty SWF's? What? Are you okay? Absolute nonsense.

I and many others get those groups you mentioned maybe 2 -3 times out of 10 games. It's never a problem and usually is a guaranteed 4k. Way better than immersed Claudettes.

As for the Spirit, just get better :)

Do you mind sharing footage such that plebs like us can get better and learn from your mighty spirit skills, or are these guranteed 4ks only big words?

  • So lets look at your suggestion.

The activation condition only hurts bad survivors that dont manage to loop the killer long enough, but DS on a bad survivor never has been a problem.

Then the bleedout timer, its basically a cap on the time that DS can waste. This means that a competent survivor cant loop you longer than1 minute before he goes down automatically.
This means that a single perk can waste 4 minutes of the killers time. Seems balanced right?

Now compare this to the genspeed, in the fastest game from the depip squad they were done with all gens in less than 3 minutes, that the equivalent of 3x DS (not even counting the time needed to down the DS first).

compare this to the strongest delaying perk of the killer, ruin.

Even if ruin doesnt get cleansed the whole game, survivors can simply power through and ruin wont even delay the game by 4 minutes.

Now take into account that survivors can literally spawn on the hex and that it can get killed in a few seconds.

it is ridiculous for the killer to be able to pull you out of the hatch. It is also annoying when killers still hit you even when you manage to pull the pallet down first. Also, fix the servers, they’re awful it takes too long to find a game and when you do it is laggy.

The hatch mechanic will be changed soon, no worries.

There are no servers btw, the game is peer to peer which is the cause for all the latency issues

Its a hook glide, not a teleprot and it needs to removed

It is an animation smoothed out... nothing more.
Survivor just try to make a fuzz about it to get something.

It still needs to be removed though. It is really weird when you glide vs a survivor and get stuck.

Killers should be able to hook from all sides
