The rift is a problem in itself.

First you get all the auric cells back and get it for free if completed. This means it has the potential to make no many so of course it has to have some sort of grind aspect to it so only die hard can complete it without paying anything else.

The whole idea of any of these systems is to make money. Without it bringing in revenue it's not worth paying staff to make it.

So how do they fix this?

There are only two options then. Keep it the way it is or they no longer reward all the auric cells for completion and make it easier for all so you have to spend something for each rift.

The best way to look at the rift imo is to see if what you can achieve is worth the money you are spending. Afterall even making it to say LVL 40 gives more skins that the money paid.

Another option: Make a paid premium-premium version (with a better name than this) that costs more than the premium version, but does not expire. Then add an option to set one tome as active, for only the bought premium-premium passes or the latest release if it is still open to everyone, and let players finish them in their own time.

Switching between tomes also allows selling bundles to new players / players who didn't finish the old tomes / didn't care about the tomes at the time. "Now in the store for a limited time: Tome 1-5 bundle" or something like that.

This suggestion isn't new however, here is a thread in "Feedback and Suggestions" from last year with more details and pros and cons:

    @Madjura said:

Mods: Please do not move this to the PTB subforums. This is more general feedback regarding the battlepass system ("The Rift") and not specific to the PTB. For that reason I feel like this belongs here and not the PTB subforums.

Once bought, you should be able to complete the different battlepass tracks whenever you want.

People who can't finish them on time should not have to spend even more money to get the stuff they want. When the next track releases the current one expires, and if someone hasn't finished the old one yet then that will put them behind on the next track.

I don't even think that Behaviour would lose out on money: With the current system the players might get frustrated after a while and stop buying the battlepasses altogether. If they were able to finish them whenever they wanted, at their leisure, they might keep buying them, and maybe spend money on some of their old tracks to finish them.

Example: A players has purchased the first two battlepass tracks, and not finished them. The third track releases. The player decides to mark the new track as the active one to progress on it. The player also uses Auric Cells to finish off the first battlepass track to get it out of the way. This is a much more consumer friendly because there is no fear of missing out if that player does not finish it before the next battlepass track releases. Behaviour still makes money from the sale of the three battlepass tracks and the Auric Cells used to finish the first track.

This way you could even bring back some of the old battlepass tracks that people might have missed out on, for example new players who didn't even play when that specific battlepass released. The way the system is currently set up I don't think this is possible.

By bringing back old battlepass tracks and letting players choose which track they want to progress on Behaviour can even make more money than with the current system, while at the same time players won't feel like they are missing out. It is more consumer friendly while at the same time allowing Behaviour to make more money off each individual battlepass track release because they can bring the old ones back in the future.

Example: There is another free weekend. A lot of new players try out the game. Some of them like it and want to buy it. They see the exclusive battlepass cosmetics / charms.

    • Scenario 1: They realize that they can not ever get those items because they did not play when the battlepass track released. Because they can never have all the content due to being new they decide not to buy the game after all.
    • Scenario 2: The old battlepass tracks are put back on sale for the weekend and the week after. The potential new players like the game, like the cosmetics they have seen and buy the game and the old battlepass tracks. Behaviour makes more money and the new players are happy.

There are two downsides that I can see:

    • the ability to switch between tracks needs to be implemented and I cannot gauge the amount of work required for that so I am not going to comment on that further
    • players may be upset because the battlepass does not give them true exclusives, the charms, as the other cosmetics are going to be put in the store after a while

Behaviour has decided to not make exclusive (streamer) cosmetics anymore as people were upset that they couldn't get them easily outside of something like purchasing them on eBay for large amounts of money. As the charms appear to be a violation of this new policy I feel like that this is strong support for the implementation of the ability to switch between and complete old battlepass tracks.

    Tl;dr:

    • let players keep all purchased battlepass tracks
    • players can pick one as active, all progress goes towards the active one
    • old battlepass tracks can be sold again in the future, this lets players who didn't play the game yet when they came out to access the cosmetics and charms in it
    • this makes the battlepass more casual-friendly while still allowing Behaviour to make the same amount of money or possibly even more

Whelp, I did it- gave them their blood money to get the last 14 tiers, and let me tell you, it was worth every penny to remove that constant splinter in my brain.

I don't think things will be better next Rift, but based on so much negative feedback I'm seeing, I doubt their next one will be as profitable for them. This Rift has left a bad taste in the mouths of many players and I think we'll see far fewer willing to buy the pass next time. I know I won't.

You have shown them that lowering the progress results in more profit. If anything it's going to become even worse.

    @Volfawott said:

I don't want to be this guy but if the Rift is causing you so much burnout why don't you just skip a couple of rifts and only play for fun during them.

Personally as somebody who loves grinding games the Rift never usually was a problem for me normally I would be done before the third level comes out or if I'm slacking a couple days after the third level is hits

Honestly I found grinding on things like dark souls or Warframe to be a lot more tedious

The entire system is built in such a way to explicitly discourage skipping them.

    • you get spammed with messages saying you unlocked something, even if you don't buy it
    • you have to look at the stuff you COULD have if only you spent money
    • in-game news reminding you that you are missing out

And if you skip one there is a high chance you will never have the chance to get certain cosmetics. Legacy is essentially just a recolor. People still regularly ask for legacy to come back, not because it looks good, but because they can't have it. The same thing will happen with the battlepass cosmetics, except it will be even worse. Not all of the cosmetics are recolors, such as the Wraith outfit from the latest iteration. Again: There is a high chance players in the future will never be able to get these. This includes players joining the game on the new consoles.

There were suggestions how to prevent the issues, such as letting players switch between battlepasses once bought, so they can complete them in their own time. Psychological issues, fear of missing out, were pointed out well before the first battlepass release. There are two options:

    • the feedback that a battlepass system will have a negative effect on some players was not read
    • the feedback that a battlepass system will have a negative effect on some players was ignored

Those are the only two options. Both of them are #########.

  • @Todgeweiht said:

Jesus christ, this is worrying. From the looks of your post this game is having a severe psychological impact, I beg you to stop playing it, its not good.

You guys need to learn when to stop before it becomes an addiction.

That this would become an issue for some people was pointed out even before the first battlepass release, including suggestions how to prevent it (not closing the battlepass for people who bought it so everyone can finish it whenever they want for example).

i mean geez that is some grind. Can't you only get like 1 rift fragment per match?

Increasing the progress from playing, pros and cons:

    Pro:

    • people can finish battlepass that they paid for and are happy

    Cons:

    • BHVR makes slightly less money due to not as many people buying progress

    Money > your happiness

Yes it is, I'm just wondering if we're gonna have an actual event or just the background changes like the last few events, I really wish the old events with hooks and gens would come back, they were way more fun than just a "Happy Halloween! Now here's your re-skinned main menu with slightly altered music, see you in three weeks"

    No more events. Only battlepass.

so you say things like ds is "not a guaranteed redemption" and then ignore "If you don't get any type of aura proc telling you what gen is being worked on when you hook someone, it will take time for you to find, let alone reach, a gen to kick."

the hypocrisy is palpable. especially since one needs a simple button press, and the other needs an entire perk out of a 4 perk loadout.

The DS comparison is absolutely valid, especially since a lot of the argument for the PGTW change is about how killers can chain the perk across different gens (remember, you can't use it twice on the same gen unless a survivor taps it to prevent regression, which oh by the way takes no time or locked animation to do) which actually encourages them to leave the hook and patrol asap and go to other parts of the map.

Survivors want the killer to be forced to use pop before starting any chases, giving them an even larger head start. Killers want the DS timer nerfed so survivors can't enjoy 60 seconds of god mode.

Killers want the DS timer nerfed so survivors can't enjoy 60 seconds of god mode.

If only DS was just god mode, but it's more than that.

    • you can sit on a gen and if the killer goes for a grab instead of downing you they get stunned
    • you can vault and if the game triggers a grab instead of a normal attack then the killer gets stunned
    • you can sit on a gen, killer finds and hooks another survivor, tries to pick you up with 1 second of DS left and they get stunned
    • you can get unhooked near a gate and DS gives you a free escape because either the killer gets stunned and ######### or you can just run out the gate while they are stunned
    • you can jump into a locker with Iron Will where the killer can't see but hear you and even if the killer specifically does not want to pick you up (due to DS) they can't tell which survivor is in the locker if you have Iron Will and get stunned if they pick you up
    • multiple survivors using the same outfit? Killer can't tell who is who without downing them first, and then they can't pick you up because of DS
    • killer wants to not have their own and your time wasted and decides to pick you up after the only other survivor died but you still have DS? Well that was stupid of them! But if they let you bleed out you will spam them with death threats for slugging. Amazing!

If DS was purely defensive it might be okay. But it is not.

It's basically a star from Mario games: No one touch you, and if anyone tries to touch you they die / get stunned.

Yeah, will likely end up doing that. Just feel like I sort of need to play her, as I bought her (fortunately on special).

    How to play Plague:

    • Step 1): Use Blood Echo

Done. If no one cleanses you can shutdown all Exhaustion perks for most of the game and Iron Will, as it doesn't work on the vomit sounds they make.

If you can't fully infect someone hit them with as much as you can and then hit them normally instead of wasting time. Most survivors don't heal and you can trigger Blood Echo on them even if they are not fully infected until then.

If they cleanse keep track of clear fountains and stop survivors from using the last one. Don't use fountains unless they are on the way to wherever you want to go or you need to use one to stop all from being corrupted and forcing you into Corrupt Purge.

  • @OogieBoogie said:

Set aside challenges and you have 342 fragments to get from playtime alone. However, you also get a bonus 300xp per day for your first killer and survivor matches. So let's assume you do at least one match of each daily and set that aside. That's 1600xp per day (500 match xp + 300 bonus for each), which is 2 fragments. That's potentially 140 fragments off of the 342 you need, leaving 202 fragments purely from playtime.

    202 x 800 = 161,600xp

Assuming you get 500xp per match (you can get up to 600, but I'll just assume the lower end):

    161600 / 500 = 323.2 matches total

    323.2 / 70 = ~4.6 matches per day

Add back the 2 matches per day you're already playing for the daily bonus and you get 6.6 matches per day. So basically between 6 and 7 matches per day, assuming you do all your challenges during those matches.

That said, the problem here is that it's also assuming that someone will be playing EVERY DAY for 70 days, which just isn't viable or desirably for most people. I've been kind of burnt out on the game lately and started playing other games and as such I'm at the point where I'll need to play 13-14 games per day to finish, which is 2-4 hours per day. It just feels like a chore.

    cover5.jpg

Behaviour when they see that your will is broken and that you are now more likely than before to buy battlepass tiers with money

  • I have just checked it on the live version of the game (4.2.0) and this happens for both Vile Purge (green vomit) and Corrupt Purge (red vomit). It should happen for neither.

An alternative solution is to force the charging until the minimum charge level is reached.

  • New ruin is both much healthier and stronger than the old one.

Old Ruin did essentially nothing against survivors able to hit the skillchecks. The only value you got out of it was denying the small amount of extra progress from great skill checks.

The only way to interact with the skillchecks as killer was to run Unnerving Presence (terrible perk, saw / sees no play), Hex: Huntress Lullably (terrible perk, saw / sees no play) or using certain Doctor add-ons. The vast majority of the time killers used neither of those options. Only survivors that could not hit the skillchecks consistently were affected by Ruin without any skillful actions on the killer's part. Especially newer players got completely destroyed by Ruin - without the killer actually having to do anything.

    So the options were:

    • keep a super one-dimensional, boring perk that the killer can't really interact with in the game
    • rework it

I think the choice is obvious.

With the new Ruin both sides can meaningfully interact with it: As a killer, if you find a lone survivor on a generator you more or less erase all the progress of that survivor on that generator with the new Ruin. If there are multiple you need to decide whether you want to down one survivor, but then your Ruin does nothing, or if you try and keep the multiple survivors off the generator to gain value from your Ruin.

As survivor you need to decide if you want to heal or unhook someone and lose progress on your generator or if you keep working on it instead. It might be good to find another survivor and to work on a generator together, so one can go heal or unhook while the other repairs to stop Ruin from wrecking your progress.

Do you expect regular people who aren't even streamers to keep a recording tool running all the time just for the slight chance of encountering a hacker? What is this insanity? Doesn't BHVR keep track of various data from games? That's how they create their stat-sheets after all. How hard can it be to look up that particular game and check if the Endgame Collapse was triggered far too early?

If anything this game is in dire need of a replay feature.

They should be able to see that the endgame was triggered early and also be able check other games with the same players. If the endgame triggers super early in multiple games with those same players then either they're hacking or using an exploit. Either way they should be banned.

Chances are however that any sort of logging tool is completely broken and this is not possible.

You don't need to know every single totem spawn like the back of your hand. But knowing the notoriously well hidden ones really isn't asking that much.

For example on the game there is a spawn under the stairs leading to the vaultdrop. In the red barn there is one inside the hai, on the lab map there is a spawnspot hidden in the large testing area where you have to do some parkour to get to it. The large machines on the farm map also often have one. Hills also often have a spawnspot.

I thought of all of these on the spot and i play this game like 4 times a week.

The totemspots were changed because they litterally used to spawn on top of hills or right next to a gen in the open

Mapknowledge is a skill survivors have and it's what seperates mediocre ones from good ones.

If you don't want to do the effort there is no shame in staying a mediocre survivor and just dealing with the occasional noed that triggers but you can't complain about it then.

Some totems still spawn out in the open. Rotten Fields, though at least there is corn around it. On Disturbed Ward they can spawn just out in the open without even grass though.

The devs simply a) don't know what they are doing or b) they don't care about console.

They care about console player's money. That's it.

The problem with battlepass challenges in games I have played with them is that the Dev team (likely management) seems so desperate for X-number of challenges to be included, that it inevitably spirals into play requirements that run the serious risk of ruining matches for those that aren't doing them. Especially in anything team-based, as opposed to something like solos in a Battle Royale.

I suffered the same match quality deterioration in Paladins for the same reason: battlepass challenges. It was one of the reasons I finally just had enough of it and uninstalled that game. Haven't looked at it or its news in probably two years, and likely never will again due to Battlepass challenges and match quality during them.

that it inevitably spirals into play requirements that run the serious risk of ruining matches for those that aren't doing them

And you have to do the challenges while the battlepass is active or you will lose out on certain cosmetics forever.

Pretty much all of the issues could have been prevented if the battlepass didn't have a time requirement. You buy it. You do it whenever you want. Done.

But that wouldn't make players feel ######### enough and therefore maybe some players wouldn't buy the battlepass and then BHVR would make slightly less money.

For me and other solo survs and killers, penatlies were the best thing they added. And i'm pretty sure the bigger streamers (these with brain) would agree, that penalties are very important to have normal games.

Anyone can be targeted by this. And even if it was only streamers or another small number of people the penalties should absolutely be disabled again until it's fixed because there is a high chance those players are never able to play again otherwise.

The point Mandy was making is that objectively COVID did impact things, and there is no denying that. Even if BHVR managed to contain/mitigate that and lost only like 10% (random number) of the development/production output, which still did let them release at a consistent rate like we are seeing, it would means that they had to bring up a priority list and discard something from the bottom of this list.

Of course you will not be able to see what was actually internally scrapped/delayed because of Covid, you will only see what they still manage to deliver.

All things considered i'm pretty happy to see how things developped since COVID happened. It really showed BHVR managed to face the situation and managed to find a balance with how they are able to output updates, and i really hope they will be able to keep it up like they are doing.

Do consider a lot of other games outright stopped development while others managed to "simply" have delays, and that's only talking about the videogame industry.

My expectation was that there is a plan for how (all at once? one set each? per character? ,...) and roughly when to release the items in the store.

I expected that such a plan would be completed, or almost complete, before or shortly after the first battlepass release. No such plan or details were ever released, which leads me to believe that it does not exist.

I would understand if such a plan had been released, in the FAQ for example, and you could not follow it anymore and it had to be delayed or scrapped completely.

But no such plan exists. Saying that battlepass items would be released eventually seems like it was tacked on at the last minute after someone pointed out that putting exclusive items behind a grind and paywall makes you look bad.

Additionally, as @Kilmeran has pointed out, new items are being put it in the store at what appears to be the same pace that it has always been. In fact the creation of new cosmetics seems to have even increased with the release of legendary skins.

If anything the already existing items could have been used as substitutes for new skins, to lessen the load of the art team: No need to create new cosmetics at the same pace as before, just fill the "release days" of new cosmetics in the store with items from the first battlepass.

I miss my blue lettuce hag costume, I have it on ps4 but not on pc and since console will never be optimized I will never see that costume again.

Sort of related: The green veins outfit for the Hag (Bile Bedlam) had the body and weapon in one battlepass and the hair in another (they are not considered to be part of the same set but they clearly belong together). If you got only the head, it's basically worthless, it looks pretty awful with any other body. If you got the weapon and body, but not the head, you can at least substitute the head with one that is available in the store.

Or you can wait an indeterminate amount of time, after which the piece(s) you need to complete the outfit become(s) available in the store. Maybe. Or maybe not.

Well for that matter you already have the challenges rewarding you with BP.

I agree that giving us a bunch of pretty useless charms, from which 80% dont look very appealing anyway, is really underwhelming. Maybe they should do less levels which take more fragments to level up. That way they could give you the high quality stuff (Skins, better looking charms like the ones on the last level of the pass) on each level and it would feel much more rewarding.

They need cheap, worthless filler to make people look at the battlepass more often. People who haven't bought it yet are encouraged to look at it ("You unlocked a new reward!") and then see all the items they are not getting because they haven't bought the pass yet and are thus only getting the free items.

Remember when exclusives were made available for everyone?

    @not_Queen said:

Why are these cosmetics not in the list?

    BLOODLETTING

Bloodletting was a promotion for ordering items on our first merchandise store (the old one) for a limited period of time. Since players payed for it, we do not want to unlock the Bloodletting shirt for all.

    LEGACY

Unless we are able to identify every player that lost legacy, it will not come back. At the moment, we are still unable to identify the players that lost their legacy, therefore, we are not refunding or unlocking legacy.

    TWITCH / KINGKONGTV / PANDATV

As per our arrangement with these partners, we cannot distribute the cosmetics to all players.

    SWITCH TRAPPER

As per our arrangement with the platform, the cosmetic is to remain exclusive to the platform.

    L4D

As per our arrangement with the platform, the promotion is effective on Steam only.

    STREAMER COSMETICS

As per our arrangements with streamers, they will not be distributed and unlocked for every player. You can get a large number of streamer exclusives in the Charity Case.

By giving these cosmetics to all PC and console players, we hope to put an end to shady resellers and scams while also including everyone, regardless of the platform they play on.

    everyone*

    * Unless you didn't play when the battlepass released. In which case we don't really care about you and you won't get the battlepass cosmetics ever.

Sensible exceptions due to licensing / contracts exist and are listed in the linked post. These restrictions do not apply to the battlepass cosmetics. They are not licensed. There is no contract with a third-party that prevents the release of the items.

The cosmetics not being available, and in some cases not being available ever again, will also become an issue for players on next-gen consoles (assuming that Dbd will be available on them). Playing the game for the first time on your new console? Well too bad. We don't care about players on your platform, we only cared about some platforms at one point in the past. Too bad for you, guess you can't get those cosmetics without a time machine.

It's never been confirmed as to what would exactly come to the Store and on what date - hence saying a minimum of 6 months. I don't think anyone expected at that point to have been hit with a worldwide pandemic and have to spend most of 2020 working from home either.

We've all seen how many games have been put back through this year due to Covid, so I do think cosmetics not being placed into the store is a relatively minor issue for the time being.

I don't think anyone expected at that point to have been hit with a worldwide pandemic and have to spend most of 2020 working from home either.

The battlepass was announced last year. The work on it must have started even before that. To me it looks like there is not even any plan of how to handle the release despite there being ample time to come up with something. Admittedly I do not know how difficult it is to put new items in the store but the only thing that seems to be missing is a potential "store banner" (like this: https://twitter.com/deadbybhvr/status/1284145359586045954). The items exist. The items have description texts written. The items have inventory icons, which are the same as the store icons.

Before the battlepass released people were saying that it uses predatory tactics to push people into playing more than they normally would and announcing that all you have to do is wait to get the cosmetics seems like a preemptive defense to stop the complaints. When the truth is that there was no (finished) plan to release the items. And the way the battlepass system functions is still hostile to the players (related: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/185325/rift-progress-nerfed-again/p1).

In case I am wrong and there is actually a plan to release the items and the developers forgot to mention it due to the current pandemic and working from home, please see this as a reminder to do so. As it says in the battlepass FAQ:

(More details to be revealed at a later date.)

No wonder I'm stuck at Level 9.

I just stopped playing. The Rift is boring, recolors after recolors and with more grind?

    No thanks.

The charms are worthless anyway. The system is already unsustainable: There are way too many charms that look just absolutely awful, and because there are so many of them you can't even show off by equipping "high-level" (charms you get from later battlepass levels) because no one knows which ones are the early ones that are fast to get and which ones come late. And good luck finding the specific charm you want to equip in the huge list of available ones.

At least the cosmetics will release in the store eventually! A minimum of 6 months after each battlepass closes. For the first battlepass the earliest date would have been in early July. Nothing was released. No information about when that is going to happen either.

Here is why I think that situation is bullshit:

    • no one was asking for a battlepass system
    • no one forced them to release a battlepass when it clearly wasn't even ready (example: first battlepass has a completely purple arcade cabinet charm - it looks awful, it would have been easy to make it look passable by giving it some sort of texture that isn't literally all purple)
    • no one forced them to announce that they would release the cosmetics a minimum of 6 months later
    • they clearly had no plan how or when they would release the cosmetics. The 6 months is just a lazy excuse to shut down people saying the battlepass is predatory by forcing people to grind the game for an unreasonable amount of time for fear of missing out on items

Source for the 6 months thing: https://deadbydaylight.com/en/archives

What happens when The Rift closes?

If you missed some rewards in The Rift, most of them will eventually be available in our in-game store after a minimum period of 6 months. (More details to be revealed at a later date.)

There are still no details though. No information about when they will release.

And yes I know that it says minimum, but minimum can also mean 10 years from now. They could have taken their time to flesh out the release plan for their battlepass system, but they did not. They needed to buy themselves time to come up with something because almost certainly their original plan was to make the cosmetics exclusive to the battlepass, but that would have made them look bad, so they came up with an excuse in hopes of finding a solution after they released the battlepass.

Yes, very interesting indeed. I did not break any of the forum rules so I'm hoping it stays!

There won't be a response, it won't even be read. Devs see that the title is critical about the battlepass and immediately ignore it.

I would be okay with them acknowledging that this thread even exists, by using the "BHVR Read" reaction (same thing as "Vote Up" but only available to devs) but that won't happen either. That would require them to read this thread.

  • @kamisen said:

@Madjura But surely this must be worse, no?

What is worse, them not responding or the change?

Actually it doesn't matter, both are awful. But they won't give a #########, all they care about is making money with as little effort as possible.

Less challenges means less development, less progress means more people might buy levels. More money for less work. An ideal situation for them.

  • But what grinds my gears is the fact that they (to my knowledge at least) didn't communicate this change to their player base.

Of course they didn't, it would make them look scummy.

  • "Completely erase all the work you have done to create the next killer and delay the release because I don't like the power."

This is what you are suggesting. No.

Does she still have to hold those initial 15% of vomit to activate or is it instant vomit now?

    *insert crab rave*

We all know of developer bias. Youve all heard it screeched endlessly on the forums. "Devs are killer sided" or "devs are survivor sided"

Well, the devs do tend to make balance decisions based around the survivors often, there is no denying the killer sided patches that have been added so far and have contributed to the longevity of this game. True balance is only a few hotfixes away.

However, again the developers are ignoring a significant portion of their audience. Solo Queue. Time and time again, solo has been ignored in favoring of making the lives of 4 man sweat squads and Spirit/Freddy mains even easier.

Think about this. Can you name any significant buffs solo has recieved over the years? Are they even CLOSE to the power of SWF?

How is a killer who was punished for not playing a top tier killer going to treat his next match? Thats right. With moris, tunneling and more. That just makes solo even worse

Without solo queue, there is no DBD. Im a killer main. And without solo and killer being buffed in unison, SWF will always be the power role.

Can you name any significant buffs solo has recieved over the years?

Hey, Kindred got buffed! For the low price of using a fourth of your perk slots you get an effect that SWF gets for free and that is practically useless if you are a solo with a 3-man SWF group.

And Better Together was made! Again, for just the low price of a quarter of your perk slots you get an effect that is weaker than what SWF gets for free.

Solos and SWF are therefore basically on the same level. No more changes needed. - the devs, probably

Of course, it's coming back. They invested time and money. They have to justify that internally.

And then it will die again. Like Deathgarden.
