  • Gotcha. All right, thanks for the advice. I'll go ahead and do the rituals. BP is good, anyway. As always, you guys are great. Glad to be part of this community. :)

  • Okay, so after the uninstall and reinstall that I mentioned two posts above, I logged into the game this evening and tonight at different times and was getting Killer lobbies in anywhere from 1-4 minutes on average. So, I assume something was bugged or corrupted, and that fixed my issue.

  • So, after the above mentioned test on my son's DBD account and computer that he plays on, and finding that lobbies do pop for Rank 20 over there, I did an uninstall and reinstall of DBD on my computer, and as of tonight have gotten Killer lobbies working within 1-4 minutes again.

I can only assume something went wrong with the game, and move on to playing. :) .

@MandyTalk , since you're the first Mod that I can remember, if you could lock this thread now, it would be much appreciated. I've managed to solve my issue.

  • @Mringasa Most definitely. I'm 45, and grew-up on them with my Dad. We were a huge horror family, and he did some special effects work when I was very young. My 18-year-old daughter has been doing make-up since she was 13, and moldings and latex work since 16. She's prepping to attend the Tom Savini School next year.

I remember as a kid, my Dad would close the bathroom door like he was in there, and hide behind my bedroom door when it was bedtime. As I walked in, he would slam the door and do the "Boooooy!" just like the Tall-Man. Would scare the crap out of me every time, but fond memories. If not for him, I probably would never have become an author, never mind work in the horror genre.

So, Phantasm holds a special place in my heart, too. Gimme the Tall Man and Reggie!

I would love to get a hold of Don one day and license Phantasm for a couple of original novels, now that the movie series is over. RIP Angus Scrimm. :(

Phantasm: Ravager did leave the story open, though . . . .

What they should bloody do is add casual play. We wouldn't even be having this discussion if they just added a quick play.

For the people saying "you play ranked one for the challenge" I'm sorry but I don't feel like having a minor stroke.

This game is already unbalanced as much as it is. People and YouTubers bring up time and time again that this game is not a symmetrical if the power roll isn't powerful a rank one you shouldn't have to always bring a ebony just to secure a pip or give yourself a win because you know you're going to go through hell.

That's just my opinion though. Take from it what you will but one thing is for sure. I'm a at rank 1 has killer and I swear to God I have never played something so dramatically unbalanced since Evil Within 2 on the its hardest difficulty.

This, this, this. I've even said as much in replies to other threads. I'm playing DBD for fun, nothing more. I want to just run around as Myers, Freddy, and Leatherface, the Icons I grew-up watching repeatedly, or a few original killers that appeal to me like Doc and Clown. Hell, I'm brand new, and I've had Survivors complete the gens before I hook even one of them. And when I do get a hook, then, I'll just let them be saved and follow them to the gates and let them escape.

Why? Because I played super-serious competitively in Overwatch for 2+ years. At 45-years-old, I'm done with it. And they earned the escape.

I swear to god, if I play long enough to Red Rank (and I plan to be here unless the game suddenly dies), I will depip just to not deal with it.

So, for the love of the Entity, make an Unranked/Casual mode.

  • This is what I want:

While I get what you're saying I don't think this would help much unfortunately. If toxic content creators continue the way they are the game will stay as is. I'm not sure what the devs could do to help with the issue.

Fortunately I don't watch streamers. I was interested in taking a look at the 'fog streamers' but if they are toxic I'll pass.

You do make an excellent point. Hopefully they aren't rewarding this behavior.

    Check out StreamDad_

@HellDescent Good point. I was thinking more of the Shooters and MOBAs, and totally forgot to consider the fighting games.

Because you're talking about different games.

It occurred to me..how long has this ""toxic community" thing, been a thing. Since this started (calling banter or ######### talk toxic), it's all you hear about. Crybabies everywhere. It's obvious what is and what is not acceptable, but it's just a whole different thing these days.

Oh, I agree with you completely. I'm 45-years-old. What people call toxic today just baffles my mind. I was merely referencing the way the communities are viewed. Hell, Vanilla WoW was called toxic back in the day, but I was just: /shrug.

Maybe I just grew-up in a different era, where people didn't get all spastic at the smallest slight. We fired back. Then when it got boring, moved on with life.

Welcome to my world. The issue has also been complained about at the Reddit and the Steam DBD community Hub, as far back as at least a month ago, and as recently as yesterday. And it seems to be across a lot of ranks.

Only thing we can assume is that a lot more are playing killer lately.

Now, here's an interesting twist. I haven't been able to get a killer lobby in days. But I also give-up at the 15 minute mark. Last night, as a test, I went to my 8-year-old's Steam account and logged into his DBD account. He's a level 20 Killer same as me. I got lobbies every 3-4 minutes, without issue.

So, I uninstalled my DBD today and reinstalled it. I haven't tested it yet, but will tonight.

  • Most the Google searches I just did turned up a general consensus of 10 seconds, but become much less noticeable after 7 seconds.

No, the point of this thread is to point out that I hope Behaviour starts partnering with smaller streamers. The pilot linked above is a great start, but still doesn't have representation at the smaller streamer level. I believe they're doing the right thing by opening the door for streamer connections, but there's still a gap. I would absolutely love to be a bigger part of the solution when it comes to fostering less toxicity in the community than what I'm doing now.

They will expand the program in time, but to make even smaller streamers part of the pilot launch, would be counter productive.

This forum is #########. Why did it send me a notification that you mentioned me in a reply, when you didn't and replied to someone else entirely?

  • @Visionmaker said: Back when Control Point had up to 5 rounds on OW competitive mode, it was absolutely cancerous to play.

That was actually one of the reasons I stopped competitive back then. The matches were just too goddamn long for me. And for what? Points toward a golden gun that anyone could earn simply by spending enough time in Competitive?

You know, kind of like achieving Rank 1 here. Just play enough.

  • Really depends on how long it would make a match. While I don't enjoy a 5-minute match, I also don't want a 20+ minute match. It's just a personal preference. It's why I loved the 10 minute or so matches in Overwatch, but hated the upwards of 20-25 minute matches of Heroes of the Storm. And I refused to touch the sometimes 40 minute matches of games like League.

If we can find a sweet spot of 10-15 minutes, then I'm all for it. Longer than that, especially since BP categories can be maxed out within that time and then it's just a waste of time vs reward, and I'd pass.

Don't get me wrong. I like to just "play." And when a game simply offers XP that leads to a free lootbox per level gained like in Overwatch, that's fine. But when I need to grind these BPs as a new player just to level a ######### load of characters for these asinine teachable meta-parks, then having a match too long, and the BP reward stopping because I've maxed what I can earn that match, then I'm done with the match.

They really need to add rank rewards. And good ones at that. Things that reward players for staying at rank 1 because right now if someone doesn't like the challenge they just derank with no punishment.

If they add rank rewards they first need to address the problem with DCing because people will only become more incentivize to DC if they know they are going to lose a pip. Once you add rewards to any competitive setting people tend to get more competitive by nature and will develop frustration quicker at the thought of losing progress.

Fix DCing first then figure out a reward system OR remove rank entirely.

DBD is not a competitive game, a lot of things have to change before that can happen, to name a few: dedicated servers, SWF and general balancing around rank 1

Which we know is not going to happen because of possible resources, especially if the failure of Deathgarden has caused any issues on the overall financial end.

The best thing they can do at this point is to choose an identity. Either they are a casual game or a Ranked game. Right now, they are trying to be a Ranked game but in a casual way, and when these two worlds collide in games, it is never pretty.

They need to create an Unranked mode that works off a hidden MMR, and then make the Rank mode harder to gain Ranks in (and remove the safety Pip from it), and start from there.

  • @Nerex7 said: The change that prevents depipping to higher ranks than 15 (namely 16-20) was a pretty good idea actually, as a lot of players were depipping to farm the noobs which made for a horrible experience. There must be some other flaw or bug in the match making right now. The issue has nothing to do with rank. From gray up to red ranks, the problem exists, mainly for killers.

I'm wondering if you're right about there being some other bug or flaw. Late last night, my Killer lobbies still wouldn't pop. As a test out of the blue, I went to my 8-year-old's Steam account and launched DBD. His account is a Rank 20 Killer as well. I got Killer lobbies on his account filled within 3-4 minutes.

  • Perks, Items, and Add-Ons, everything you use to make a loadout build and have certain advantages in a match, are achieved purely through the Bloodpoints.

So, you're asking for the game to go P2W?

I have very limited play time, so I get that concept. I also have a lot of disposal income, so such a system would benefit me. And this is still a horrible suggestion.

Ranks 20-16 are isolated from the rest, and it's impossible to derank below 15. I recommend waiting until the next rank reset, one week from now.

    He knows whats up.

The devs created the noob ranks to make it a save place for new players. So veterans can´t depip and bully or stomp them. But in doing this, they messed up the matchmaking for the noob ranks, which results in extremely long queues like yours.

Unfortunately, survivors have found a way to do just this. They just join an SWF with their rank 20 friend and torture low rank killers. Been seeing a lot of my rank 11-14 games filled with multiple rank 2-6 players in each. My wife gave a stab at playing killer at rank 20 and faced 2 rank 6s in her group with 2 rank 20s.

Yes, they have to change the swf matchmaking. Since survivors abuse it to get easier killers. They should be matched with the highest rank. Not the lowest of the group.

They could also put a cap on the amount of Rank gap that can be matched together. Maybe a +3 or +4 cap. For example, At a +4 cap, a Rank 6 could be in a SWF with someone of up to Rank 2 or as low as Rank 10. But not beyond that. A Rank 2 could SWF with a Rank 1, and with someone as low as Rank 6.

Another option would be to average the total Rank levels of the Survivors and find a Killer of that Rank, but I'm not convinced their system could handle doing that since it would have to be done for both SWF as well as soloQ survivors.

  • @Eninya , Yeah, it really does. Now, I'm all for needing to learn a game. I'm all for being low rank until I learn the game and can rank-up. But when the Lobby times make it impossible to get a match in a fair amount of time in the first place, that means actually learning the game (i.e. by playing) and getting out of those black hole ranks, requires either a lot of hours in a day, or so long on a limited play schedule that one spends an inordinate number of weeks or months playing Lobby Simulator By Daylight instead of Dead by Daylight.

People have told me to play Survivor and learn that side in the meantime. Okay, but in what meantime? Is there anything the Devs can even do about New Killer lobbies? And ranking up a Survivor does exactly jack & squat for my killer Lobbies since the two have separate ranks.

I have no issue learning Survivor and haved played them, but I've no interest in being a Survivor main because Killer lobbies don't pop before Rank 15. I don't enjoy Survivor nearly as much as killer, and bought DBD and the DLCs specifically so I can play Myers, Leatherface, and Freddy: the icons I grew-up watching over and over again. I didn't buy DBD and the DLCs to be a survivor main. For that, I could have just not bought the DLCs and used one of the original four.

  • @Nerex7 I hear ya. While I've designed games before in the table-top RPG industry, so understand balancing moving parts, I've never been in a position to have to deal with video game matchmaking algorithms. So, I don't know what they can do to fix this mess, I just know that as a new player they need to do something.

I tried again during east coast U.S. prime time (It's only 9:15pm as I type this), and I give-up for tonight. I could go Survivor and play some matches, but I'm just so disenchanted with the game right now, that I'm just going to go blow crap up in Overwatch Quick Play for a few matches, then watch a movie with the wife or something.

I have limited play time on any given night, and some nights none at all. Staring at a lobby queue that refuses to pop, or being forced to play a side that I don't enjoy as much (Survivor), isn't worth it. Especially when getting to Rank 15 Survivor in those much faster queues does absolutely nothing to alleviate my Killer lobby issues.

  • @NextKillerSpongebob Oh, I might be new to the game itself, but I followed and researched it a bit for about a year. I know the changes they made, knew all about tunneling, looping, facecamping, et cetera before ever buying, and all that jazz.

I also fully understand why people derank in this game.

What I can't understand is how, two years after launch and in this market, Behavior still doesn't have an un-ranked mode in the game. I can only assume because un-ranked would have to work on an MMR, even a hidden one. And I'm doubting they really have one in place that's worth talking about, considering how in a SWF, the match is based on the lowest ranked member instead of an average rank of all four survivors (even if some in the match are solo).

It just appears like they went the path of least resistance on matchmaking, and I don't know if that was due to finances, lack of experience, or both.

  • @HellDescent Good point. I was thinking more of the Shooters and MOBAs, and totally forgot to consider the fighting games.

  • @Warlock_2020 , Yep. I've also encountered similar more than once. At this point, they need to do what other Ranked system games have done, and put a cap on the gap, maybe a +3 or +4 rank difference. So, for example, a Rank 6 can SWF with up to a Rank 2, or as low as a Rank 10, friend. But not a Rank 19 friend.

  • @Dreamnomad said:
Playing on PS4, I can typically get a rank as killer within 3 minutes of making a lobby. Typically doesn't even take that long. Usually, the only times getting killer games is tough for me is right after a new killer is released.

Non-toxic dbd community...wish that was true...but it'll never happen. Maybe when the playerbase reaches Deathgarden's...The game itself promotes toxicity with game modes like swf, some of the in-game features and broken matchmaking.

It's more than that. Overwatch, Paladins, HoTS, any of the other PvP games I've played . . . not having a toxic community is like finding a unicorn. Ain't gonna happen. It's just the nature of the beast when you have games whose sole focus is pitting one human against another.

Good or bad, DBD has about the same level of toxicity that I found throughout my three previous games: Paladins, HoTS, and (my main until I came to DBD) Overwatch. I've found DBD to just be par for the course as far as its toxicity levels.

Even here at the forums: The calls for nerfs and buffs, survivor main vs killer main, it's the same. I regularly post at the Overwatch forums. And over there it's all nerf and buff cries. This hero vs that hero. If you want a tank or healer nerfed you're automatically a "DPS main" or a "Genji Main." Casuals vs Tryhards. The SR ranking system being broken. Leavers and throwers in matches.

Different names between the two games, but you could cut-and-paste a majority of the DBD complaints right to the Overwatch or HoTS forums, and vice versa.

  • @Forsaken I've considered that. I mean, I don't enjoy Survivor nearly as much as Killer, but if I'm going to play Survivor just to be able to play, I might as well join a server, get a SWF group, and just go that way. Can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Is there a straight-up DBD Discord server? I've tried a few of the groups listed in the LFP subforum, but they were either last active in August, or didn't have a lot of English language posts in channels.

  • @Vortexas How do we PM here? Is that just the comment on your wall thing that anyone can see anyway? :p

  • I'll wait and see what happens after the 13th, and just (yawn) Survivor in the meantime. Unfortunately, if Behavior's low rank/new player queue buffer still results in poor lobby times for me on Killer after reset, then I might just move on to something else.

Shame. I really like DBD and its concept, but I'm not interested in playing a lobby simulator that is just going to make it frustrating to play the actual game and try to get out of these ranks.

We'll see what happens next weekend.

Don't worry, though, fellow forumites: I never post "I'm leaving" threads when/if I do actually leave a game. I just vanish. :)

@Vortexas Thanks for the Stream region instructions. I'm going to try that out.

Unless i warn people about swf groups , and how to dodge them, i can't recommend the game.
A killer that hits a string of coordinated players will likely get mauled badly, consistently, and turned off.
    I can't recommend the frustration.

Still, the game is pretty fun.

You know what? You're right. Screw it. Every PvP game has its share of major flaws, albeit some easier to stomach than others. I really like DBD so far, so will stick with it and recommend it. Overall, I really like many of the people I've met here at the forums and in some Stream channels, too.

  • @DeadByFlashlight Gotcha. Well, I'm casual and so are the fans that ask me about games (as far as I can tell). Since I'm not seeking to rank-up in DBD and just want to have fun playing some killers I grew-up on (Myers, Freddy, and Leatherface), I suppose it should be fine then.

Don't get me wrong. I have done the whole competitive gaming before. I got that way due to Overwatch for those 2+ years, and I ended up hating it. I'm 45-years-old, and just want to play to have fun like I used to before the Overwatch Curse.

So, if I'm reading you right, DBD is still a good game for that type of casual play?

  • @DeadByFlashlight I'm a new player, and I see these threads a lot. Seeing what I have to look forward to after putting hours into the game, I am seriously wondering why I should even bother. Maybe it's just better if I shelve the game into the hidden list of my Steam games and go back to Overwatch.

I mean, I came here to get away from Overwatch, but if all this is what I have to look forward to for learning the game and putting time in, it's very much not worth the effort. It's making the issues that drove me from Overwatch seem tame by comparison, and that isn't an easy thing to do.

Why should any new Killer main stick around with DBD? I'm an author. My fans know I game, and often ask me for recommendations. Based on the amount of times these issues are repeated about DBD, why should I bother recommending this game to them?

It says that you get 0 pips, and then says that it's a "safety pip".

Well, I just took it as "0" being the safety that means what I said above, since everything else is -1 a pip or +1/+2 Pips.

Seems odd for a ranking system, but when the only ######### mode you offer is a ranking system, I guess you gotta pad it somehow.

  • @Orion and @Boss , Okay, it took me a minute to get what they were saying since it's mainly just shown in a chart that 6-8 emblem points is a Safety Pip. So, it's just a way of saying: You weren't good enough to Pip and not bad enough to Depip. I get it now.

  • @PigMainBigBrain said: there aren't even as many killers as there are survivors.

Survivors only outnumber the Killers by one character. There are 14 Survivors and 13 Killers. At least on PC, I don't know if consoles are missing any characters.

  • @Boss , I choose you, since you were the most recent post. :p

I'm new to DBD. What is a Safety Pip? The Gamepedia Wiki is less than useful about it.

  • @GrannyonAcid said:
This game shouldn't have a number rank at all. The whole ranking system needs a complete revamp. It would be a lot better suited if it judged based off individual performance. Right now you can rank up and only click mouse 1 on generators. Once in awhile you'll get killed and safety pip. But it's really hard to not get a pip on either side. Throw people into groups. Bronze / Silver / Gold / Diamond. Something like that. Make the seasons last 6 months of a year. Start providing rewards for what you do. If you at least achieve gold during that season you get like a exclusive skin or something like that.

But even with this system it wouldn't be great. RNG is a huge factor into DBD. Which is why it isn't really designed for being a competitive game mode. You can stealth across the map and do gens until you escape or the rest of your team is dead. Doing this will still rank you up. Even though you don't even have to know how to play the game. So I'd suggest getting rid of these 'categories' that you get points in. Make it so everything gets pooled together in a single point category. Going to have to find a way to cap that. Maybe make it so you can only score 30,000 points in a game no matter what. If you score over 2000 points you get points towards your next rank up. If you have a few games in a row where you score under 1,500 points you get deranked.

Because they are trying to please both the tryhards and casuals (and I mean neither term in a negative way) with a single, ranked-only game mode.

It will never work out correctly.

They need to simply create an unranked mode where people can just go and play. Let those who want to rank-up, play hard and focused, and take the game seriously play in ranked like they want to. Then they can redesign the Pip system to actually reflect skill for those players.

Right now, they have one mode that has to give the serious players some sort of sense of accomplishment, while not making the casuals feel like the game is too difficult to achieve anything or just have fun. PvP game after PvP game has already shown that rarely do those two worlds mesh together. They need two separate modes.

  • @GrannyonAcid said:
    @thesuicidefox

But what do you mean by people that know how to play the game. That's the whole problem with the ranking system in a game like DBD. As a rank 1 survivor I do not pallet loop or use jungle gyms. I don't body block killers so he can't hook a survivor. I don't run around with four flashlights like team players and prevent the killer from getting kills. I just repair a gen and then hope to get a decent chase out of the killer. Where as some players... They think that being a rank 1 means you have to take it seriously. You're not helping your team if you don't loop the killer like everyone else. You get flamed if you use the killer shack pallet. There's all these rules that rank 1 survivors have for each other. But some people don't want to play like that. They want to play a fun match and not care about rank. But unfortunately it's way too easy to rank up. So you get stuck with players like me on your team that get chased down and actually die to a killer.

Same for killer. Some use mori's and face camp and tunnel to rank up. Other killers enjoy the 'chase' aspect of the game. They want to chase and down people. Put them on a hook without being griefed and then take another chase. They don't care if they come away with 0 games as long as they know they made it hard for the survivors. Yet killers also rank up because it's way too easy not to. It all comes down to the key point. Ranking up is too easy. And it mixes all the try hards and casuals into the same games.

Let's just call it what it is. There's really no number rank that means anything in this game. You have the Rank 1 try hards and the rank 1 casuals. And because of that it makes rank not matter a damn bit.

Exactly. And it is precisely why the game needs a casual, non-ranked mode that also gives Bloodpoints, unlike KYF. I don't want to rank-up and be expected to tryhard every match. As I said, I did that in Overwatch (and Heroes of the Storm) and I'm done with that style of play. It's no longer fun for me. I'm playing a video game just to relax. I just want to hunt people as Myers or Freddy or Leatherface, the horror icons I grew-up watching repeatedly. I just want to relax and play casually. I don't care if all four escaped in the end on some matches, just having some good chases and feeling like a horror killer is enough for me.

Either give us an unranked mode, or redesign the Pip system so it is a lot more difficult to achieve.

  • @SenzuDuck said:
Yea, I like it but think it should be stricter.

But this happens in any PvP game. If you couldn't derank here as easily, they would just wait for a sale and buy a new copy of the game. The skilled players won't need the Perk slots to bully new players.

Hell, I'm surprised Behavior didn't make buying a second or third account more needed. Plus the extra DLC purchases for the associated characters. And those who like to bully the low ranks, even Streamers, would spend the money, too. They always do.

The way Overwatch is set-up, people buy smurf accounts left and right on the 50% sales (or the recent $12 Humble Bundle subscription that included Overwatch) and use smurf accounts to bully lower ranked players enough that it's bitched about constantly on the forums.

And Blizzard just keeps bringing in the money and touting the "copies sold" like it means something. But the main point is: They weren't stupid with that set-up, and keep raking in the money and marketing the copies sold. When people hear "45 million copies sold," they usually think it's the popular thing and want to jump in, too. Never mind that it isn't actually "45 million unique players."

  • @Snapshot I didn't check my VSYNC since in most my games nowadays, I found it disabled by default. I should check it next time I go into DBD, though. They might have it enabled.

@Khalednazari I'm really curious if the game optimization is worse than I thought, then. I double-checked the PS4 specs and they aren't bad. Certainly shouldn't give you guys even worse lag in skill checks than some PC people get, which seems to be exactly what other replies indicated happened on PS4.

I did do a bit of research on frame rate drops, and a game having poor optimization is a regular culprit. And that would explain the skill check delay across the three platforms, especially since, from what I see at the forums, the console version seems to be optimized even worse than the PC version.

  • @Vietfox Thanks. I was curious because I have damn near top hardware from the computer, itself, to the mouse, keyboard, et cetera and I was like: Huh?

@Khalednazari What can cause framerate drop? Because I'm running a 1080Ti card here and lots of ram.

That's how programming works in real life.

That's only partially true. If half the bugs that get through each of their patches made it into the live environments I work with I'd be fired. That's why we have test environments...to test our changes before they go live. BHVR strikes me very much as a company that does not put a lot of faith in QA, they're philosophy seems to be more "do it, throw it out into the wild, and we'll use that as our test environment". It's not very professional. Sadly it's also not uncommon in this industry, however.

I can't say it's just Behavior, though. It seems to be a lot in the gaming industry.

I just came from 2+ years in Overwatch. Blizzard has made over $2 billion on that game already, and that isn't counting the Season 1 Overwatch League profit (they reported that it made a profit). And Overwatch has a ######### ton of bugs, and new ones all the time. Some have been there for two years, like the many for poor Reinhardt. Doomfist released with bugs, and suffered through them for almost a year before they did a patch that finally fixed nearly two dozen of them in the list. Then there's still the issue of Moira's orbs bouncing randomly due to hitting invisible pixels. And many more throughout the game.

And let's not get started on the bugs for Battle of Azeroth over in WoW.

    And Blizzard is huge.

Compared to DBD, overwatch is the most polished, balanced game without any bugs

Nah, that's just Blizzard's Disney-level marketing engine doing its thing. People just think that.

After playing their games for 24 years now, I compare their games to a Michael Bay movie nowadays: They look great on the screen, and lots of ######### will blow up, but beyond that . . . there ain't much. :p

I started out playing alot of killer trying to get all the teachable unlocked, but when I started playing more survivor I noticed that it improved my killer play, I like the balance between the two in a play session, usually start out playing killer then finish off with survivor

I notice there seems to be a slight delay or lag from when I press the spacebar to when the Skill Check actually stops. It's very weird. Do you notice anything like that as Survivor?
