  • I typically already do Myers for Halloween when I take the boy out trick-or-treating. But it has zero to do with DbD.

Well I've been playing every day. I can't do more than that lol.

The MMR system appears to be precisely what I feared it would be when sent live: a Beta state system.

There is a lot of work that needs to be done on it, but I just can't bring myself to stay on as a Beta tester for them.

Yeah no the game lost me, I'm not sacrificing my time and energy for zero fun just for the sake of eventually getting into fair matches so I can learn the game by PLAYING it.

I can't blame you at all. As I stated earlier, I'm likely about to take my own advice and just move on. I'll just keep truckin' in Overwatch with the Friends & Family team, and do my new play-throughs of State of Decay, Alan Wake, the Telltale Walking Dead and Batman seasons, and maybe finally play the Borderlands Pre-Sequel. Hell, I might even play through the Batman Arkham series again.

I'm nowhere near enough of a fan of DbD, despite loving playing Michael Myers, to deal with this crap.

It was generally fine before the update, I wasn't getting ######### stomped every. single. game.

They should've just put it into a beta testing server and had sample sizes of randomly selected players.

Even an incentive like a skin or something

I'm just not going to play at all, if so, against my friends in a private match, but then again they have far more experience than I do still, so I'll still learn zip nadda.

Precisely what they should have done was a separate server test, with a large sample size, you are exactly right. And a good way to do it, given how crazy this player base is for skins, is the exclusive skin or two like you stated.

But, this is BHVR. The same studio that bugged the living hell out of Nurse and, many months later, still haven't fixed those bugs. The same studio that fixes, then breaks, then fixes, then breaks, the audio in the game.

I hope to be wrong, but I honestly think it's going to be close to a year before their MMR system is working as it should be, and that is only if they can get it working properly at all. Matchmaking in DbD has been a mess since the game launched, and they already tried a few Rank and Emblem versions that failed to work as intended in the past.

That's fine that 'you're' willing to put up with it, but don't expect other people to.

Yeah, I don't get their mentality. Why would I play a game that isn't fun? The whole point of playing a video game is to have fun, even if that fun takes the form of PvP and beating enemies in a match.

But watch videos if the game isn't fun? If I wanted to watch videos, I wouldn't have launched DbD to play it in the first place. I would be watching videos. Play KYF? Okay, sure. Oh, but anyone I've ever had try the game walked away from it and said: Hell no.

Know why I've played Overwatch for the four years and three months since its launch day? Because it is fun. Same with almost 15 years of WoW. Or all the repeat play throughs of Borderlands 2.

It makes no sense to me to say: Well, this game isn't fun. Let me fire it up and watch some videos while it's going. I don't know about other gamers, but if a game isn't fun, it's collecting dust, likely getting uninstalled, and I'm going to go play a game that is fun and spend my money on that game studio. 🤷‍♂️

  • @DietDrBass said:

I had those same guys in the match I mentioned earlier with the mercy killing try and convince me to keep playing.

Like it's pretty sad when you have players begging you to just deal with terrible design choices.

To be honest, I would advise any new player to not buy the game in its current state, or if they did, shelve it for maybe six months to a year. BHVR stated on their Twitter that they also feel new players being tossed against high-hour vets is unfair and not what they intended. And that they have some ideas forming on what to do. And that the MMR is a work in progress.

That's the main issue. It's way too much of a "work in progress." You don't design an MMR system, have it run in the background doing data collecting and mock simulations in matches that are not using any sort of MMR system at the time, and then toss it live and hope for the best. You have to test it internally, live Beta Test it with many, many players, and tweak and adjust and redesign areas from there.

Instead, BHVR did what I stated above (they even said how it was running in the background for months and "predicting" the outcome of matches . . . matches that weren't skill-based created in the first place, mind you) and felt confident and sent it Live.

And this is what we have. They claim 10 matches to settle an MMR on Survivor or a specific killer. Yet, feedback is clearly showing tt isn't 10 matches, and some have counted between 30 and 40 matches before anything even started feeling "fair."

Thirty to 40 matches might be fine for someone who just plays Survivor, but can you imagine chewing that much glass if you play, say, even five or six Killers out of the 20 that currently exist? I, for example, enjoy playing 17 of the 20.

This MMR is more akin to a Beta state MMR system. It needs work. But BHVR is very, very slow in getting bugs fixed, never mind an MMR tweaked or areas redesigned. Thus why I advise shelving it for six months to a year. See if BHVR has their mess sorted out by then.

I'm fairly certain I am going to be taking my own advice before this week is over.

The separate killer is what’s probably really throwing things for a loop... it’s good in theory but like you most people don’t get to play hours and hours day after day.

I might not pick up Doctor or Demo for days or week... but I’m decent enough that when I do play them I’ll be wrecking the lowBird I’m matched against

Exactly. It looks good on paper. The issue is that they have 20 killers, with the 21st due out . . . when? . . . in September, next month? I don't play Trapper, Hillbiilly, or Nurse, but that still leaves 17 killers (plus Survivor for 18) that I would need to settle an MMR with. And it is obviously taking longer than the 10 matches they claimed it would.

That would be like Overwatch saying to get an SR for all 32 heroes, instead of just for each role: damage, support, and tank. And even then, you only need five placement matches per role, for a grand total of 15 placements if you want to do it for all three roles (disclaimer: I would only did it for Support and Tank).

And I'm not interested in limiting myself to just a couple of killers, especially when I paid money for each DLC and didn't use shards for the non-licensed. I might want to play Myers, then Freddy, then Doc, then Ghostface, and so on.

But as a casual gamer (i.e. very limited time), that means I will have to constantly chew glass when I play, because it would take me forever to get a correct MMR on them, even if it was really only 10 matches, which feedback shows it clearly is not, not even for survivor which is just a single MMR.

Between the design of the Rift and now this, it just seems like they are trying to force login engagement and get those high metrics. As I'm sure that helps them in securing licenses.

Not the game I signed up for. It already has enough asinine grinds.

I'm starting to think it's only bad for the first 40 games or so. For me, it was 30 before there was a difference. By the mid-30s it was win some/lose some. By game 40, which was my last, it honestly felt like like they made no change at all. The only difference for me at this point is the queues for survivor at night (CST USA) were quicker.

I'm only curious now to see how quick I'll queue as killer during the day (which is historically 10-15 minutes for me).

So, for someone who only plays around 10 matches in a week because I only play video games one, maybe two nights a week, it could take close to a month for my MMR to settle? And that is just for survivor or one killer? And that is if, on that night or nights, I only play DbD and not Overwatch or WoW?

    ######### that, pass.

  • Can confirmed that it worked.

  • @PigMainClaudette said:

Since when was everything about proving that you're better than someone else through any means?

Why can't we just get along and realise we all need each other for this game to work?

How can you honestly justify making other people MISERABLE for a reward that lasts for all of 30 seconds and comes with so much hate attached?

Why aren't games about fun any more?

These are several questions that I find myself lately, especially in regards to Dead by Daylight. This isn't a competitive setting where people's livelihoods depend on it, outside of a few streamers who could honestly jump ship into another game if it. So why do so many killers these days act like getting 4 kills every game determines their entire life? I play killer to not only test myself but to test the survivors and see what they're made of. I play survivor to see just how well I can do and to see if I can be the support for others that I wish that I've had before.

Lately it feels like I'm being forced to use perks and strategies that I personally despise because of the mindset of "I payed money, I can play how I want" when everyone else did and some of them now basically CAN'T play because you decided to only focus on 4 kills, or just suicide because you were found first. I am now having to equip perks like Decisive Strike and Unbreakable to deal with killers on a general level, rather than running perks I want to such as Dance with Me and Quick & Quiet because of the amount of tunnelling and slugging with this new MMR matchmaking that is giving me worse rainbows than the previous iterations.

I will not tell you to change your playstyle. That argument goes nowhere. All I'm asking is that we all just stop for a minute and realise that this is a video game. Something that we all do for fun, and if we don't stop acting the way we do, then nobody will be having fun for much longer.

If you must comment, then please just be respectful. No "git gud", no "entitled", no nothing. I'm not getting banned because you don't like that I'm challenging your ideals, and if I get a whiff of severe disrespect, I will be seeking the mods to close the thread.

This is just a game and we all need to remember that. Have fun. After all that's why we're here.

Games still are about fun, and those designs are primarily in MMOs and single-player or co-op PvE games. You mentioned Borderlands 2 in a previous post, and that is a prime example. It's a PvE game.

Hell, I'm about to play through State of Decay, Alan Wake, and the four seasons of Telltale's Walking Dead again for fun.

PvP games, though, have always been about competitiveness and defeating the enemy team by any means available. It was even true back in WoW PvP. It was true in Quake. Is true in Overwatch. And is true in DbD. Nothing has changed about games being about fun, but you also have to look at the correct genres for that. You can't come to the PvP genre and expect one side to care if the enemy is having fun. PvP players care about winning.

It's why before Overwatch launched in 2016, the only PvP I ever did was in WoW. I looked at DbD back then, saw that it was a PvP game, and didn't look again until mid-2018. The only reason I owned Overwatch at launch was because it was an early father's day gift from my 23 (at the time) year old son because he and work friends were playing and wanted me to join. Otherwise, I doubt I would have ever bought Overwatch.

Generally speaking, I don't care for PvP games. Overwatch is the exception. Dead by Daylight is too much a mess, in the hands of a weak developer, for me to care much anymore.

I've done exactly 10 matches, so tonight I'll be playing more hag to see how it goes from there...

I'm recording all the matches and I'm definitely making a video about the results.

I look forward to seeing it. Because for the life of me I would love to understand how in the hell they got an MMR system to function properly in a game like DbD. Especially when they couldn't get a simpler ranking system to work properly in four years.

As it stands, I'm on a break for the next month until I see how this all shakes out for regular players. At this point, I don't even want to login and waste my time if this falls on its face. The Overwatch summer event launches today, I'm going to chill over there for the next three weeks.

Wasn't there a server maintenance that happened recently? It was the first time I'd ever seen that in DbD... is it possible that's when the system was introduced?

There was a 30 minute one on July 14th.

  • I personally had very little faith in an MMR system for an asymmetrical game like DbD. I'm just chilling in training mode on mobile and over in Overwatch. I'm going to watch feedback for a week or two before determining if I will log into the Steam version again.

  • @Owlzey said:

Same. Gotta love how the mobile version got it first when people on the main game have been asking for it for years...

I've already started to feel like the main game has the junior varsity dev team, and the mobile version has the varsity team.

  • @Kebek said:

With how new MM is working I hope that we'll soon get training mode so that new players can test out how to at least hit skillchecks before they're matched against old rank 1 killers.

Same for killers, maybe give them a chance to learn basic chase mechanics before forcing them to face pro loopers.

Is this a training mode like mobile has? Because if so, that would be a godsend. Sometimes, I just want to relax and not PvP but want to run around as Myers or Bubba or Ghostface. Just for the horror icon feel. It's the same reason I played "offline mode" sometimes in F13, too.

I've actually been chilling in training mode in mobile more than playing DbD on Steam lately.

  • I refuse to play with a starched screen. It has to be soft and fluffy or it's uncomfortable on the eyes.

Shame there is so much aura site that breaks stealth. I love stealth, but it is not a functional option/alternative in most games. That goes for both survivor and killer. Seems every match has OoO that destroys my Pig or Trapper. As survivor there is constant Chili, IAE, Murmur, and countless addons.

I wish stealth were a true option, but stealth almost entirely depends on the killer just not being very observant.

Sadly, that is precisely what caused me to play it only rarely, if I am bored with my other game, anymore. Playing Stealth has just been phased more and more on its way out of the game.

I get it, BHVR wants chases and loops. Unfortunately, if I feel like playing an in-your-face-come-at-me PvP game, I play Overwatch for that.

  • @NekoGamerX said:

  • I don't take this game seriously enough to really look at it as a Victory or Defeat condition. I just log into it when I want to play something different from Overwatch or WoW.

I just look at my end-of-session bloodpoint total and see if I feel I got enough that session, just like I do with XP in WoW.

And, for reference, solo queue in OW is a very, very miserable experience, esp in high gold queue where people think they're good bc "I'm close to platin I must be good" but actually have no game sense whatsoever. I think I prefer DBD solo queue over OW queue tbh, because in OW it only needs one player that sucks to make the team lose. And because people need to know their role in order to not suck, which most don't. DBD is far, far more random in terms of how a game goes, therefore one bad survivor doesn't necessarily mean the end of the world as it usually does in OW when both teams are equally strong.

Your mistake is playing Competitive Mode in Overwatch at all. Jeff Kaplan doesn't give a damn about Competitive Mode in the main game, that became obvious as far back as 2018, which was the last time I wasted my time in that mode. Unless it is OWL, they don't care. Just look at the recent Genji buffs. It was to make him flashier for the OWL viewership. Mei was gutted because the OWL was using her as basically a third tank. It didn't matter that she still wasn't that great in the main game, she was made even worse due to OWL.

Ladder barely saw GOATS being played, yet Lucio and a couple of others were nerfed because of GOATS . . . which was primarily played in the OWL.

Competitive mode is just a joke.

That said, I think I'm about done with OW anyway. It's just gone too far downhill in the main game. But Solo Survivor in DbD is still a horrible experience.

  • Hell, even 2/2/2 I end up as a solo support because the other support is a DPS Ana or Moira. 🤣

I'm used to it, especially from playing a lot of QPC.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/173968/i-dont-understand-how-people-can-enjoy-survivor-enough-to-main-them

I don't understand how people can enjoy playing a multiple game as killer all the time instead of playing survivor which you can play with friends and have a laugh together in a casual game so to each their own. It's like playing a bad horror game but you get to play it with friends so it's alot more fun, even if it's lost its fear factor many matches are tense. Killers have no tenseness and it feels like playing a repetitive singleplayer game that is just boring when dead by daylight is fun because you play with friends...

When you have friends that play DbD, then yes. Some of us don't. My friends and family won't touch this game due to the asinine grind. They tried free weekends at one point, saw the grind, uninstalled and moved on without buying.

So, for us, it is Killer or SoloQ, and SoloQ is absolute ######### in this game. It's even worse than SoloQ in Overwatch or Paladins.

  • @Lx_malice said:

Tell me about it. Arguably if you're a dps main the experience is even worse on Overwatch. You have to wait 10-20 minutes just to play one match and if you aren't carrying the entire team your teammates will let you know how "trash" and "useless" you are. Also waiting that long just to get a ######### 2cp map....makes me want to commit uninstall life.

I laughed so hard. I hear ya loud and clear, lol.

Mainly, I just play with the friends-family team and we do QPC or QP. I stopped doing Comp back in 2018 when it became clear that the only Comp mode Jeff cared about was the OWL. Hell, 2/2/2 went over so well that they just added Open Queue Comp as a permanent option. Yikes.

Tonight I was doing QPC and Mystery Heroes alone . . . ungh. A four-year-old game, teammates all near my account level or even higher (I am 1,009 currently) and they STILL don't know not to stagger in or to get on the objective.

I don't have any friends that will touch this game due to the asinine grind. And I can't blame them. I tried using the Discord for people, but that is a rotating door and not worth it. Never mind that I really don't use Discord to begin with.

  • Playing Solo Survivor is the only thing I know that makes SoloQ in Overwatch feel like a fantastic experience. I have never had a worse time SoloQing in a game than I have here.

  • @Flatskull said:

    Thank god.

Loops were the most boring part of the game for me as killer and the most predictable ,especially since a lot of loops are simply unmind gamable - namel chest high walls- they gave the survivors a massive and easy way to extend the chase time with very little effort and while I respect to a certain extent that gitting gud at loops to a level against competent killers takes...some...skill.

I refuse to believe anyone out of absolute sweaty try hards find looping fun. If you like that, got to garrymods, put down a box and loop a zombie AI for eternity. You're welcome.

That's not to say looping dosen't have it place nor there aren't specific conditions it CAN be fun but that mostly a resuilt of a magical match of equally skilled survivor and killer facing off with both enjoying a stand still moment of "who will win" and not the standard looping experience.

That and looping is absolutely meta-game bull and takes away all fear, adrenaline and sense of urgency from both sides. I've always said survivors should get more interactables, more hiding spots and mot items since their base mechanics are designed around alertness and spatial planning-360 camera- but the maps are so empty loops, vaults and pallets are thier only real choice.

I don't blame loops for becoming meta-it's the devs fault for not giving survivors anything but bloody perks and standard items despite it being how many chapters in- and I hope survivors get a plethor of buffs and items that help them fight the killer in other ways than baiting a chase and running a chest high wall for 2 minutes mindlessly.

Sadly, it's that design that, for me, stops DbD from being anything but a very occasional game that I log into for a couple of matches, then go log into something else. Be it when playing killer or survivor, the goddamn looping, looping, looping is like playing a bad episode of the Benny Hill Show in a horror skin. It's boring.

Seeing as of how it just went live on Xbox, I'd give it a week or two and see how things look then. It no doubt needs to compare how you play to how others on Xbox play before things get ironed out.

See, that's exactly it. He might have played all day and have a settled MMR, but there is zero doubt that a lot of players likely have not, and do not, yet.

A week is actually way too fast. The MMR system just came in, and it's going to take around a month for it to start settling a lot of players, enough to consistently work with, unless a majority don't work or something and can play DbD all day.

The first 4-6 weeks of this MMR system hitting a platform are going to be rough.

  • I haven't touched Competitive since 2018. Back then I was mid to high Plat. What would I be today? Not a clue. I either six-stack for Quick Play or Quick Play Classic with the Friends/Family team, or SoloQ Mystery Heroes (or Total Mayhem if it is up). Once in a blue moon I will do some FFA mode. Lately, also been messing around in Workshop games. The Dead by Daylight mode there is fun, and I started liking Doomfist Sumo.

Right now, we're just waiting for OW2 for the new Heroes and Maps, and the PvE.

Rank 1 gameplay is very easy and very boring atm is rank 1 killer and survivor and all i verse is green ranks which is making this game very boring to play as it’s to easy. If your going to introduce MMR devs at least give rank 1s a high MMR to start off with so we don’t keep getting all these low ranks because it makes there gameplay bad aswell versing rank 1s when there low green rank .

How many matches have you played? For most MMR systems, and it varies from title to title depending on how the studio designed it, it can take anywhere from 10-30 games to settle your own MMR. Until then, it's going to be a coin flip of matches.

The other issue with an MMR is when you have players that are now new to the game or returning players or players that don't play that often. The MMR algorithm is going to have to place them, and until it does it's going to bounce them around, including into your matches at times.

While an MMR system will work to get you balanced matches once it finally assigns your MMR, you're also going to continue to get coin toss matches with those whose MMR hasn't settled yet. And you're going to feel it more in a game like DbD, with only five people in a match and four being on one side, than in an even teamed 10-man MOBA or even the 12-man Overwatch. While an MMR system should be better than the old Matchmaker, it is far from the magic bullet some people think it is.

As far as assigning beginning MMR based on rank, that it would be a mistake. BHVR already stated that rank did not necessarily equal skill but rather time played. Though it could equal your skill, that was far from guaranteed. It's why they moved forward with an MMR system instead.

This is exactly how it works on mobile, and it’s bliss!

I haven't played Mobile in around two months, but when I played the controls were really unintuitive in layout. I'm hoping they add the ability to change the layout and positions of buttons.

That said, outside of my controls complaint, in my opinion DbD Mobile is superior to the normal game in many ways. Shame those Devs can't come over and do some work on this mess of a game.

As it stands, I'm still going to watch the forums and player feedback, as well as BHVR announcements, but I think I am going to wait until, maybe, late Summer/early Fall before I consider really coming back to play anything accept just an occasional match. I am wary of how in the living hell they got an MMR system to work in a game like this, and want to see how it all shakes out before I (potentially) waste my time. I'll just stick with Overwatch for the time being, I suppose.

Oh, is this about a new update or something? Did killers get nerfed again?

It's concerning the new MMR system, which went live on Xbox today. They're live testing it there and if it works out in live, it's launching to all other platforms within a couple of weeks.

A family member has DbD on Xbox via their gamepass, so I was able to test it today. Details on it can be found here: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/173606

  • @Khakuate said:

Changes are not even out and ya'll are already asking for nerfs lol

Actually, they are out on Xbox. And since someone in my house has it on their Xbox Gamepass, I've already tried it hands-on.

  • MMR systems come with their own host of issues. One primary thing is that, depending on the system the game uses, it can take anywhere from 10-30 matches for MMR to place you where you belong. Unfortunately, that does nothing for your teammates. You might have finally been placed at X-MMR, but two of your random teammates might not have even been placed yet, so the MMR is jumping them around trying to figure it out. So, yes, they could be in over their head in your match.

Which means that when teaming with randoms in an MMR system, it still very much becomes a crap shoot. I've played Overwatch, for example, since launch, and in Quick Play, which uses an MMR, whether or not a few of my random teammates are liabilities is till a coin flip. Especially when they're lower levels and haven't gotten an MMR yet, or they've been gone for a long time, come back and it uses their previous MMR (or tries to place them again) and they aren't in matches they should be in.

Yes, you will eventually get some balanced matches in a team-based MMR system game. But you will also still end up getting lopsided matches, particularly when such a game is new, or it just then adds an MMR system (as DbD is doing).

It's going to be painful for a month or so, and then continue to be painful each time they get a surge of new players from a free weekend, a sale, or a popular DLC.

  • I play both sides and I agree with you. Survivors need to be locked into loadout from the time they click READY.

At this point, what BHVR should do is remove the lobby section entirely. You (or your group) click Ready, it searches, and upon making a match takes everyone directly to offering burning screen, then the loading screen, then into the map.

As it stands right now, I don't even feel like playing once this hits PC. I think I might just continue my break and see how this all shakes out before deciding to return or not.

  • @Peanits Any word on closing down this cheat since Killers will now be locked?

    Oh wait .. you're serious...

No ... Its situational. Especially with how broken matchmaking is (still) it really is very random, you just got a string of inexperienced players. I keep getting 4s and 5s in my 15 rank games. Its not "easy" for me to rank up. However that is okay too. I think people put too much stock in the Rank system honestly. This is not an Esport, its not regulated as a competitive game so there is really no rhyme or reason to the rank. I have seen rank 20s who play like pros, just like I have seen rank 5s play like trash. Its all subjective.

Hell, in the Anniversary stream, even the guy that is working on the MMR system and had a segment on it admitted that the ranking system is more indicative of time played than skill.

And when I can be gone for a few months and come back to DbD as a fully decked out Rank 20 Killer . . . yeah, the ranking system is absolute trash.

  • One of the loading screen quotes was so true it wasn't funny, and was from the QA Team Lead according to the screen. It went something like:

99 little bugs in the game, 99 little bugs. Take one down, patch it around, 103 little bugs in the game.

Because survivors don't have to try. You can literally do a gens with one hand now so nothing surprises anymore might as well just start with exit gates open

Crap. I think you might have just stumbled on their upcoming Beginning of the Game Changes.

I mean, wouldn't surprise me at this point.

Yeah but mario kart is fun to win in. I can shoot a blue shell to hit 1st place to win.

You definitely have a point. 🤣

  • Now, what if you didn't want to have kids in the first place?

What if you found the pain from being kicked in the balls a turn on?

What if you didn't have balls due to an accident or the result of cancer?

What if you were a female?

I give it a 1 out of 10. They need to up their nerdrage game.

I haven't played with voice comms on Overwatch but even still the text chat was still pretty toxic at times. Blew me away how serious people took that game, literally trash talking you for your rank in unranked lol.

And yeah, I'd be lying if I said I haven't had my fair share of abuse as killer too. I only have just short of 200 hours in the game, but I literally only play killer unless some friends feel like playing once in a blue moon. I've seen just about all of it, death threats, uninstall, nonstop ridiculing, etc. I report it most of the time too but I doubt it actually does anything. I've had people go ballistic over NOED too lol. Had this one bad game in particular where I wasn't doing so good, they're feeling rather confident at this point so they're going for ballsy plays until the last gen pops and NOED activates. I was in the middle of a chase with a Feng when this happened and I downed him right after it activated, which lead to me zoning everybody away from hook since they were too scared to ######### with NOED. Game ended with only the Feng dying, and this guy was PISSED. Like literally frothing at the mouth in the post game chat about how ######### I am for using NOED, how ######### I am for not 4King with NOED, etc

Like good god man, no matter what you do you're a trash killer I guess.

That's what I don't get. In pretty much any other game, not just Overwatch, that has ranks, the ranks usually mean something. But even in the Anniversary stream when they had the segment with the fellow working on the MMR system, he blatantly stated that rank in DbD became more of an indicator of time played rather than skill. Which is why they're moving to a skill based MMR system (for which I wish them the best of luck in an asymmetrical game).

Yet, people in this game treat rank like they're pushing for Top 500 in Overwatch for a dream of reaching Open Contenders to one day maybe land a spot on an OWL team (well, before Activision-Blizzard butchered the Tier 2 and 3 esports segments).

It's a friggin' asymmetrical game. They aren't hardcore competitive by any stretch of the imagination. But when you have an asymmetrical game designed around grinding builds with an RNG-heavy method of gaining them on top of that, thinking of DbD as anything but casual is laughable.

So why get mad at a loss? I don't get the mentality. This game is about as competitive as a game of Mario Cart with other players.

Yeah I feel you, most of my WoW friends are people I play everything with. I usually play dbd solo, so I had my chat off for a bit. I ended up turning it back on though and sometimes people genuinely are just really friendly after the game, no matter what happens. That being said I ######### despise the people that run full meta perks with keys and insta end the game after they get enough points and trash talk in the post game chat. Toxicity is twice as common as friendliness, but I just leave my chat on in the hopes that I get the latter instead. Most of the times it's not the case so it degrades my mood, but people that ARE friendly really do make it a better experience. I don't blame you for turning it off though, saves you a ton of sanity in the end

I hear ya. The thing about over in Overwatch is that every friend I ever made in that game was on my team. I have yet to make a friend from the opposing team since doing so requires having Match Chat turned on, and that channel is a cesspool on par with DbD endgame chat.

I had enough BS experiences with endgame chat as a killer, especially a low-rank killer going against red ranks that run roughshod over you, know they did, and still insult and crap at the end, that I just said to hell with it in DbD.

Unfortunately, I stopped playing survivor after three days in a row this past week of never getting unhooked off my first hook. Not once in a single game. And I both did gens and unhooked others, so it isn't like I was some useless, edge-of-the-map-hugging, urban evasion Survivor. It was about as much fun as playing a one-fight-and-dead battle royale.

I'd do this too if it weren't for meeting really cool people occasionally. Just the other day I made 2 friends, which wouldn't have happened if my chat was off/profile private

Well, in all honesty, I only own a few games on Steam: DbD, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Borderlands 2, a few Telltale titles, and State of Decay Year One. And DbD is just a side game for me. I primarily play Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, and World of Warcraft. I've been a Blizzard player since 1994 with Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. My in-game friends are all in the Blizzard games, which is also where most my family plays as well.

If DbD was a main game for me, I'd probably join the DbD Discord to meet like-minded players, and only because SoloQ survivor is a unique type of Hell.

    Yeah, I get that.

I guess I keep laboring under the illusion that I'm going to encounter people who are nice and we'll have a civil conversation about the game afterwards or something silly.

My fault for thinking such things, I know. 😁

You know, it's funny. I have actually found that in Overwatch in the past, back when the game was at its height.

I have never found it in DbD before finally giving up.

I always laugh when Overwatch players complain at the forums about toxicity. A couple of times, actually, I suggested they go play DbD to experience real toxicity from a childish player base.

It's funny, gaming in general is probably the biggest source of stress in my life.

Not to make it sound like a flex, but I'm fairly successful in my job, financially stable, my marriage is happy, the people I hang out with are all largely respectful, thoughtful people.

Then I play a video game and it's all just the worst people and experiences. I almost always end a gaming session asking, "Why did I bother wasting my time doing that?" but then I always come back. Go figure. I must be some masochist. 😂

It can be, especially in a PvP game environment. That's why in DbD, my Steam profile is completely private and endgame chat is forever closed. In Overwatch, if I am playing with random people instead of the friends/family team, voice chat is turned off, match chat is turned off, and if need be I will even turn off team text chat. They can still do the scripted call outs just fine.

The only multiplayer game where I will actively interact with strangers anymore is in World of Warcraft with the guild. Outside of that, I have no interest anymore in dealing with strangers in a video game. I'm almost 50 years old, I'm long since done dealing with ######### in a video game.

  • No. But I have oddly had Overwatch dreams where I was actually in the game as one of the characters (usually Reinhardt or Soldier 76) like some futuristic V.R.

  • My steam profile is private.

Endgame chat is forever closed off.

So, people can rant all they want at me, I won't see it. 😂

Dbd community is going to complain about anything

Personally i think they did a pretty good job so far

A gaming forum is going to complain about anything and everything. I don't care if it's a PvP gaming forum like DbD or Overwatch, or an MMO forum like WoW or SWTOR. People come to forums primarily to complain.

  • I'm going to laugh my ass off when people stop playing Billy, and then the complaints roll in because now survivors are constantly facing the very few remaining red-rank viable Killers, giving them even less variety of what they go up against.

60k is an incredibly high number. And that's just for one given moment, at one time of the day, on one of four different platforms. Breaking records in the fifth year of a game's life cycle is hardly "dismal", an "average" game of this kind is scraping by in the three or four digit range by then.

If by "average game of this kind" you mean asymmetrical games, then DbD broke the mold on that one, I would wager, in large part due to the licensed DLCs such as Myers, Freddy, Amanda, Stranger Things, and now the very much beloved Silent Hill franchise.

Asymmetrical games have primarily been utter garbage, let's be honest. Friday the 13th was completely botched by Illfonic, and their Predator: Hunting Grounds isn't any better. Hide or Die, Last Year, and a couple of others were completely botched both during development and at release. Even the recent one for Resident Evil is "meh."

It isn't like DbD has a high bar to surpass, here. When does DbD get the biggest player count jumps? When a popular licensed DLC is launched. It did during Stranger Things and again now during Silent Hill. And Silent Hill also coincided with the 4th Anniversary to boot.

The question remains as to whether or not they can retain those numbers long-term, whien for the past couple of years they could not. At least on PC.

1 … 18 19 20 21 22 … 58
