  • What is BM?

  • No, it isn't fun, but it is the easiest way to make the Game much more manageable for me.

Its up to Survivors to not give me that opportunity.

    Here is a tip:

If you are the unhooked, Do not make noise, do not leave scratch marks, dont let me hear you breathe.

If you are the unhooker, make as much possible sound to draw my attention, You DONT want me finding the Teammate you just unhooked.

If Survivors want to give me the Opportunity to have a fat easy game, Ill take it.

    Its just common sense.

  • You sure about that tho?

How do you know it isn't the matchmaking prioritizing time over mmr?

  • I have accepted Camping and Tunneling as possible outcomes from the Killer, I now consider it my job as Survivor to make sure the Killer dont get an advantage by camping/tunneling.

  • All it takes is one player who wants to die, or one weak player who is bad to screw it up for everyone.

  • Yeah, Sorry, they cant just reskin demodog and call it a day.

  • Yeah, its gonna be great, I cant wait to play it.

Getting mad over a video game, yeah, whatever. People have moments. But there is a reasonable boundary to that. There is literally never ever an acceptable excuse for using slurs, encouraging IRL suicide/harm, or threatening someone. People don’t “accidentally” have a “heated gamer moment” saying a slur unless it was already in their vocabulary.

Before someone says something stupid like, ”You can just hide the text box.” The point is people shouldn’t HAVE to do that to not get told things like “I hope you get cancer” or worse. Apathy to a firmer stance is exactly what lets this type of behavior flourish. If you think an immediate permanent ban is too harsh, maybe realize you have it seriously backwards, and allowing people to continue to play after saying slurs, encouraging harm or suicide, or threats over a video game is the thing that’s too harsh. Also, before someone says something stupid like, “It’s just words,” don’t be disingenuous. Language is literally how people communicate with one another and nuances and aspects of language exist that affect the people communicating. That’s like saying, “Cheating is just having help moving some pixels on my screen better.”

BHVR should really reconsider adding in a system that bans you from using the pre/postgame chat.

If you cannot repeatedly try to be cordial to other gamers, then have a temp ban from the chat service for: 1 week/1month/2month etc etc

  • Yeah, BHVR put them in the Store for people.

  • If they want me to play Yui, they should give her some cosmetics that I can identify with and have fun in.

Im not a biker, so she aint my style.

Artist has great pressure on generators with DMS, she is almost unstoppable. She has pressure even in chase. She was rare before but not anymore. I don't know i faced with how many Artists with this PR + DMS combo at this week.

This feels like Pre-Nerf Freddy. Ruin + Pre-Nerf Undying + Tinkerer with slow-down add-ons. And put snares around loops and make survivor out and take hits.

Now Artist has same issue. Strong gen pressure and strong anti-loop. Before DMS's buff, only counter of her was Shift + W. So she was losing generators if she would run with you. But now even in chases she can force to block generators.

I can not see any counter. Please tell me how i will counter her while she is blocking generators with DMS and regression with PR.

Hide your Aura so she does not know where you are repairing.

  • lol you are just really unlucky, perk is fair as intended.

  • What platform you playing on, What Hours? and in what region of the world? Crossplay is on/off?

Very new to the game. Is there anyway to opt out playing against/with SWF? If it not, has this been discussed before? As a new killer im getting games way out of my league, really frustrating.

You should not be frustrated by getting owned, there will be ups and downs, if you keep that up it will literally eat you alive in this game.

Know that you can learn from them, Know that it dont matter if they have easy game vs you, dont take bloated egos to heart in endgame chat.

Kill the best you can, have fun applying the hammer to Survivors, even if you dont managed to hit them at all.

With time comes skill, comes mastery. Chill and have fun is my best advice.

The killswitch is there for something that's absolutely game breaking and can crash the game or be severely exploited where the game cannot end for example. Neither of those apply here, survivors can be slugged etc.

Whilst I appreciate RPD can be frustrating right now, it is something that has been brought up to the team.

Please bring my view to the Developers, That I dont find RPD frustrating except the orange entity goop, dont like that.

Killers that can one shot the whole match. Not a problem.

Killer that can one shot due to a perk/addon before gens are completed. Not a problem.

Killer that one shots due to an end game perk. Blasphemy.

NOED gets a bad rap because survivors believe they won once the last gen is powered. The killer wiping the team after this point hurts their sense of accomplishment.

    Good point.

Here's where it's unhealthy and poorly designed.

It punishes Solo's who already are getting the shortest end of the stick. It's good against Duo's still, but it drops off massively against 3 and 4 man SWF's.

Good Killers aren't going to need it against Solo Q and Duo Q. They're gonna need it to deal with SWF's....except that's exactly the opposite of what NOED does.

It punishes you for doing totems, unless you get all five. If not, get #########.

Do we have numbers on that tho?

Is it really true that SoloQ Survivors die to NOED more than SWF?

  • No one told me how to reel in survivors, it's just trial and error every time

I suggest reading the Killer Power more carefully? its quite informative.

Should you have to read the Power Description? In an ideal world no.

And a tutorial for each Killer would be a lot of Work for something most players learn by doing anyway in trials. There isnt much bang for BHVR's buck in that. Its much easier to just take a game or three not knowing what to do, after all being a bad killer isn't a CRIME, right?

  • One of the flaws with the Prestige Systems. I hope the Team fixes this.

I just want Prestige System that is an absolute pleasure to interact with, no downsides.

I have been playing dead by daylight for a long time then I took a break for about a year and came back recently cause of quarantine to find my stranger things dlc missing from the game and they took it off the Xbox store I contacted Microsoft to confirm my purchases they confirmed it but said there's nothing they can do cause it was taken off the store and to contact the game devs directly so I did and I'm getting little to no response idk why all I want is my characters back or a refund if anyone can direct me to a higher up to get this sorted that would be great cause the last thing I wouldn't want to do is to potentially take legal action if I have to thanks for reading

Make sure you provided the receipts to BHVR

Assuming you filled out a form correctly at https://support.deadbydaylight.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Then all there is to do is wait, . Threatening legal action on the forums wont speed up support.

idk how Microsoft Store works, but Steam has this neat little window, under properties. Maybe Microsoft has that too?

But the Store page for the DLC says this:

  • Terminator would be great, even tho its an action movie, the robot on its own fits so well.

  • I think Killer is fun atm, the new Boil Over is making Survivors try out new strategies, which moves them away from the usual DH, DS, BT, Unbreakable. Which is good. BHVR needs to give survivors more new options to crush meta, which will in turn make the game fun.

  • Sure, they updated us on Twitter yesterday.

Idd say give it a week, and if its not there contact support on: https://support.deadbydaylight.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

  • You can solve this with slugging. About time we put some pressure on slugging gameplay so BHVR can make it a lil better.

  • I dont care when a Fnaf Chapter comes, I only want the Chapter to come so we can get over it as a Community.

First off, amazing post and follow ups. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to help break down these very complex design challenges into a more readable and understandable form!

PS – Love Trueskill, I remember reading papers about it many years ago. It solved some problems with matchmaking that are unique to videogames (ie building a fresh team for every game) in interesting ways.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2768500#Comment_2768500

It’s absolutely a challenge to communicated about this topic, as it is both extremely technical and complex. When doing a Q&A stream, I am trying to boil down years upon years of research and experience into a few sentences that are understandable, correct, and quick to deliver so that we can answer as many questions as possible. As much as I would love to talk to everyone for hours about Matchmaking, the mathematical nuance of Glicko-2, and how all of this needs to be modified to apply to an asymmetrical game… At some point I need to get back to working on the game. 😊

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2768605#Comment_2768605

I’ll offer up a bit of clarification about this point: There is a “soft” cap for MMR as it is considered by the Matchmaking system. A player’s numerical MMR value is allowed to go as high (or as low) as the math says it should. However, when the Matchmaking system is looking at building matches from players in the queue it will effectively round down (or up) the extreme outliers to help them find a match. This was done in direct response to one of the MMR tests we ran last year: Some players were completely unable to find a match because they were such extreme outliers, no matches could actually be formed with them involved. The soft cap is a dynamic value that we can change at any time (and we have adjusted a few times already). Right now I think it’s around 2,000, so any players who have an MMR above that value are treated by the Matchmaker as though their MMR is 2,000 for the purposes of building a match. Post-match MMR adjustment is still based on their ACTUAL MMR, though.

It's worth noting that this isn’t done because there are tons of players above the cap, it’s actually the opposite! The vast majority of our players fall within our lower and upper soft caps. The caps exist to handle the rare, but still real, edge case of extreme outliers. They deserve to play the game, too!

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2768229#Comment_2768229

Sadly, in practice, it’s much more similar to the worst-case scenario. It still weighs MMR a bit when backfilling, but not in a meaningful manner. This is partially a hold-over from the Rank-Based Matchmaking days. But, as mentioned, it has been identified and is something we are actively working on addressing!

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2768500#Comment_2768500

Improving the algorithm to take into account team results is also underway. Originally, we didn’t pursue this approach because Survivors can leave a game and start searching for their next one before the previous game had completed, meaning there were no results available for updating their MMR. This is one area where the solo-result system has an advantage, as soon as you are done in a game your MMR can be updated.

In reality, the MMR adjustment from a single game is small enough that you likely won’t notice a difference in opponent from match to match as MMR adjustments are meant to show impact over many games, not just 1 or 2. Our hope is that we can hybridize the system and use both team results and personal results to generate an even more accurate MMR that contains the benefits of both approaches!

As another note about the various posts talking about the 1v4 aspect of DbD as it pertains to the maths:

Our batch update logic (that’s what updating with multiple results simultaneously) is based on the Glicko algorithm. It (Glicko) was designed to handle situations where you’ve got multiple results in a short period of time where there’s unlikely to be much difference in the skill of the player between those games. To put it another way, think about someone going and playing in a one-day tournament: They win some and they lose some, but their skill level at the game was probably the same the entire time. In DbD, we use this for Killers to process the results of a single game: 4 matchups that all happened simultaneously are “batched” together to make use of this approach.

If you’re more curious about the maths, I encourage you to check out Mark Glickman’s website about it! He provides papers explaining the formula in detail. A quick search for “Glicko” on your search engine of choice should lead you there.

We have made many customizations to the formula to reflect the asymmetric nature of DbD, but the core mathematical concepts remain the same. 😊

I love your reply, it clears up alot.

One question tho, Given the recent harsh dialogue about SBMM on the forum. Have you or the team discussed a rebranding of SBMM to MMR?

I think a lot of people get their underwear in a twist over the word, "Skill"

  • lol dont ask me, I dont have an account that can find em.

  • @Pulsar said:

I find it perplexing that people take issue with the idea that the system does not rate people fairly based on skills, not only because it ultimately doesn't have to

There's only so many matches with a 20 hour Meg that I can take.

The Devs actually admitted that it basically just tosses people in whatever match it can find due to queue times. My average Survivor queue is 7 minutes. My average Killer queue is instant.

The issue is that not only does MMR have nothing to do with actual skill in DBD (likely because of it's asymmetrical and RNG-heavy nature) but that it can't work until the queue times even out. Even if it were a perfectly functioning system, nobody wants to wait in a queue for 30 minutes.

You can type another essay, but for literally everyone that I've spoken to on Xbox, not one single person has said the game was more fun after MMR.

Hey Pulsar. sorry to hear that, but I have to question you on your story.

Its clear that the game was not really made for survivors of your caliber, so why dont you just play when more survivors like you are playing?

You dont seem to know what a negative confirmation spiral is. Basically, you loop for 5 gens, taking 6 minutes, NOED, get facecamped, die, lose a lot of MMR, face worse killers BUT also get worse teammates. So you loop for 5 gens again, this time for 8 minutes, NOED, get facecamped, die again, even worse killer, but also even worse teammates, loop 5 gens for 10 minutes, at which point pallets run out, killer doesnt even need NOED at this point because he can trigger bloodlust 3 like 8 times anyway, get facecamped, teammates too scared to rescue or dont even have BT to rescue, die first again, face an even worse killer, and even worse teammates, loop only 3 gens for 10 minutes because teammates dont even work on gens anymore.

You can see why this is an issue, right? You should never, EVER create a negative loop in MMR.

Then you also have the reverse, where because of this loop, lower MMR killers still GAIN MMR while they lost the game. Because a good survivor with 1900 MMR got backfilled in a 900 MMR lobby, but the killer with 800 MMR also got backfilled, now this killer kills the good survivor after chasing for 5 gens, and the killer doesnt lose as much MMR because the 900 MMR survivors are higher, so he loses less MMR when they escape, but because the good survivor had a ton of MMR, he gains a lot of MMR for killing that survivor first, and since its the first survivor to die, he might gain 40 MMR from killing that good survivor, and lose 10 MMR per survivor that escaped. Meaning a nett gain of 10 MMR in a game that was lost. This is ofcourse a bit of an extreme, but that shouldnt happen.

Patrick is right, if one side wins, the other side is supposed to lose. But sacrificing yourself on hook for a 3 man escape is still a viable tactic. So why do you lose MMR if it causes you to win?

Sounds like a really far out example there buddy.

The EGC begins when The Killer or any Survivor opens the gate, not a second sooner. The EGC has a particular purpose; it perfectly achieves that goal, thus requiring no change. Some killer players want everything to benefit or become a tool for The Killer; EGC will never be that.

@Emeal tensions are high and the Survivors are pushed up as soon as the EGC begins, not any sooner.

    meh

  • @Mandy said:

EGC is there purely to end the game, it's not meant to give killers kills. It's there to prevent instances of survivors hiding at the end of the match and preventing the match from ending - which is why killers can open the doors, to start the timer and force players to leave instead of an indefinite amount of time being added to the match for no reason.

That's why we say it's doing it's job well, because it's ending the game.

There's no problem with 99'ing doors - previously survivors would just open them up fully and make the same endgame plays, they can't do that now due to time, so 99'ing is the smartest option when you don't know where your team is, or if you're planning to make saves. It doesn't change the way the game was played at the end of the match - nor was it meant to.

But Mandy, when I watched the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqGzYaiiMlY Dead by Daylight | Endgame Collapse

I was under the impression that this mechanic would push Survivors.

I quote: "Tensions will run high as Survivors race against the clock to save their friends from the entity, while evading the Killer"

Now take that with how regular gameplay is, Survivors 99% the gate and wait until their friends are safe and then leave together.

The game regularly has no impending collapse or pressure, the Endgame collapse is only really effective if you can force the gate open as Killer while also trapping a rescue team.

Now, maybe the marketing team overstated the impact EGC would have.

But I think you guys really missed a good opportunity.

I would increase the EGC Timer, then start it when the last Gen is lit.

I would also put a 45ish min auto EGC, to prevent hostage taking but that is a side issue.

No, I just call it how I see it.

If someone has been running the killer for 5 gens, and the other 2 survivors are doing gens, meanwhile I am scared so I hide in a locker and walk enough that I got prompt the game to put crows on top of me. Meanwhile I refuse to go save but open the gates and leave instead leaving that one teammate who ran the killer to die.

That shouldn't make the game think I am more skilled than them. It should let me have my escape while also taking into account what I did towards the objective. That is the argument people are making.

That shouldn't make the game think I am more skilled than them.

Its just a matchmaking value. The game is not judging you. #########?

its just checking your averages and matching you fairly with people who has the same.

So they tell you that anyone who crosses that exit line and escapes raises their MMR. But you still think they have low MMR. Gotcha.

I mean it's not like people on here don't post about how MMR is not working as intented every single day, because if a survivor has high MMR, they should not be doing these things (hiding all the time, not being efficient etc). THAT is the argument, not their "averages".

Like if they want to base it on escapes, sure go for it. Just stop calling it "skill" when we (the people who carried them through the match) know it only took them holding W towards the gate to get there.

So they tell you that anyone who crosses that exit line and escapes raises their MMR. But you still think they have low MMR. Gotcha.

Again, my friend. Averages. You keep telling me they and you understand what they are and then you say stuff like that.

    What's lazy about it?

Oh, I don't know. The fact that there are variables that stick out in every match that can weigh heavily on the outcome of a match.

I don't particularly love it when survivors who hid the entire game, never took aggro, never unhooked another survivor, never touched a gen, immerse enough to go through the gates as if they did anything outstanding. Anyone with half a brain understands that this isn't being skilled, in a game where it is literally tied to an objective, if someone simply walks through a gate shouldn't be considered "skilled".

The fact that there are variables that stick out in every match...

And that's why we go for averages. Just because the simple solution is smart and easy, does not make you lazy for picking it.

... when survivors who hid the entire game,...

Sounds like you are really low MMR, i have not seen a player idd consider inactive like that in ages. Never the less, I bet they are trying their best anyway, its very unlikely anyone makes their way through the game like that, even past the bloodpoint incentive. If you think its possible, please demonstrate if you can make it from low to high mmr by just hiding.

I dont think BHVR is being lazy they tried to find the solution, but it just was not meant to be. We gonna have to move on.

I am so glad you actually said this. I'm so tired of people giving "one game" as an example. If you are giving "one game" as an example, you are completely losing the entire point of SBMMR.

    Just doing what's right.

  • The Emblem System didnt do that either, and it had other problems.

  • Ok, No, they literally made this system, your title is wrong.

Also you forget that MMR is based on average games, not one and you assume facecamping Bubbas are motivated by MMR.

The only regret I have with the SBMM System is that it isnt called MMR.

Cause I think people have a kneejerk reaction to hearing the word "Skill", which is too easy to misunderstand for my liking.

  • Seems Dowsey does not know what averages are. Seems most of the Community don't either.

If you are so god like, you will escape the majority of your matches anyway, so you will get higher MMR.

This Community is just depressing. Demanding a system that takes potentially an unlimited possibilities into account, while averages do the job.

  • Update: So I decided to search around on this topic and when the 5.2 Hellraiser PTB was on this was in the Patch notes.

    image.png

I have not been able to see any thing on any future patch notes of it being fixed.

So potentially its gonna be fixed once the art department has time.

The mods MUST have answered these questions 1000 times by now? I just cant seem to find a recent answer.

I would love a shapeshifting killer. It would be really interesting, even though it needs a lot of work to create a power that could work with communications between Survive with Friends.

Would that not just be to create a Killer where faking the identity is just a bonus and not a requirement for their effectiveness?

Nah that would be not what we want in such a killer anyway.

  • I don't know why but I agree Claire's face looks very puffy, so much so it into the uncanny valley.

I follow BHVR on Twitter, there are ALOT of comparisons which are posted constantly in replies to BHVR.

I don't think BHVR can just change it, since someone Capcom MUST have greenlit this model, so this will probably take longer to fix than normal. Licences is not funny. So BHVR cant come out and admit anything or say they are working on a fix.

I am still hoping BHVR will be able to get Ada and loads of other Resident Evil ladies for skins.. Ashley (Re4) would be a MUST BUY for me.

I'm pretty sure BHVR has it on the list tho.
