Hello, my name is 157C/Krispe, and I have been an active member of the Dead by Daylight community since the game's release. Like many of you here amongst this forum, as well as many of my friends and individuals I see within the official Dead by Daylight Discord, I am frustrated with the way the developers (BHVR) treat its community and handle the game they've created. I thought it appropriate at this time to write an open letter that can be seen and commented upon by the community to the developers, in hopes that they respond and address many of these community concerns as well as keep us updated on what they're working on. Within this letter, I am going to address many points and as a community, please feel free to comment on all of them, on a specific one you're passionate about or specifically agree with, or just saying you agree or disagree. If you do disagree on any of these points, please state why as I'd love to open up some dialogue to see if there's a flaw in either one of our perspectives. For some context I am not a survivor/killer main, I play both very regularly and enjoy both, so I like to think I understand what each side needs, but it also allows me to not be biassed towards one side specifically. Anyways, let's get into the points.
1) One of the main problems plaguing the community is bugs. Lots of them. But not only that, it's the fact that some have been in the game for a long time and have still not been fixed. We as a community have become accustomed to them, and that's a problem. Now, I've dabbled in game development, more specifically UE4 and Unity (gross), and I absolutely understand that patching bugs is a very difficult task. However, some bugs not being fixed, especially when they are rather simple fixes, is something I find to be ridiculous. Let's take Ghastly Gateau for example. This is a bug affecting us all right now, it's value is wrong (Supposed to be 104%, not 140%), and is supposed to stack (It's personal). Both of these from an outside perspective looks to be two relatively easy things to change and fix. Again I don't know the coding of the game, maybe I'm wrong. But even so, some COMMUNICATION about when a fix will be deployed and why it's taking so long would be nice. (This will come up at a later point). Bugs are plaguing this game, and one thing I've advocated for a long time and will continue to advocate for is an "Operation Health" for Dead by Daylight. If you are unfamiliar with Operation Health, it was a Season within Rainbow Six: Siege, where instead of getting two new characters to play, the developers took the Season to focus on fixing bugs. While many players hated Operation Health because it denied them new content, the goal of fixing a lot of major bugs plaguing the game was completed, and absolutely increased the quality of life and longevity of the game. (It was then followed by Operation Chimera which sucked ass but we don't talk about that). My point being, I would absolutely much rather have an Operation Health within Dead by Daylight then another Chapter with a mediocre killer and survivor with crap perks. (Another point later on). Please fix the game.
2) Communication is something I feel all developers should have regularly with their community. Not just via stream, although that is somewhat acceptable, but through social media such as Reddit and Twitter. I want to take a look at Battlefront 2 by EA. That game launched an absolute mess, and to make things worse the Community Manager (CM) at the time, never talked to its community about ANYTHING. Then a new CM was appointed, and things changed. This CM was on Reddit and Twitter very often and communicated with players about things they were thinking about implementing, bug fixes, new content, EVERYTHING. BF 2 is now one of the best Star Wars games created thanks to its developers and active communication! I'm not asking for all of that from BHVR, but I'm asking for SOME of it. These streams and Q&As aren't doing it for a lot of people, especially when you gloss over/ignore really important questions from the community. It's even worse when you answer the same question multiple times and those answers give some vague/backhanded response. Let's take the latest Q&A for example. One of the main questions was that everyone feels that PH's perks are terrible and need to either be reworked/majorly buffed, and you guys basically responded with "Well we buffed it after the Test Server so it should be fine now". Why would the question be asked again if the community felt it was fine? These kind of lazy answers are not putting faith in you to make the game a better place. Please participate more in communicating with your player base about bug fixes, reworks, etc... People will be more accepting of flaws within the game if you just communicate about it.
3) The priorities of BHVR is something I feel needs to be addressed. This goes back to bugs of course, but just in general it's something I want to discuss. Things like the Gateau bug should have been hot fixed by now, and because of the lack of communication, we don't know if that's something they're even focusing on. I think major issues impacting the community should be the highest priority for the developers and should be communicated. As simple as that.
4) Game balance is at a point right now where if you are not running certain perks as a survivor/killer, you have a much higher chance of getting killed/losing. Just like my idea for an Operation Health, I believe there needs to be an Operation Rework, where BHVR takes time to rebalance/rework a lot of perks/add-ons for survivors/killers. There are some perks that are not only unfun to play against but are just so BORING. Here's the list of meta perks for reference (for both survivors/killers): Sprint Burst, Adrenaline, Borrowed Time, Decisive Strike, Iron Will, Unbreakable, Dead Hard, Pop Goes the Weasel, Save the Best for Last, and Corrupt Intervention (Bolded because those are the most annoying imo). There are a few more that could be argued such as BBQ and Chili but those are the main ones I wanted to throw in there. Also, notice how there are way more meta perks for Survivor than there are for Killer. During Operation Rework, my hope would be the developers change/balance a lot of the meta perks, but more importantly, MAKE WORSE/TERRIBLE PERKS BETTER! For 4 Chapters we've gotten nothing but mediocre/crap perks. Last good killer perk being from Ghostface and last good survivor perk being from Nancy. Stop printing crappy perks and take time to make them better and make the best perks less meta. Also, take this time to rebalance a lot of really garbage addons for killers and make some killers more viable (Clown). I watched an amazing video by one of the best content creators of this game going through every killer up to Oni and talked about rebalancing them. I agreed with literally everything he had to say, and some of his suggestions were actually implemented (Trapper reset of traps). I suggest all of you, especially BHVR, take time to watch the video and CONSIDER adding some of his suggestions. Find the video here.
5) This game is toxic. Entitled survivors and toxic killers is another major problem within this game and is arguably one of the main turn-offs for new players. The purple and red ranks are especially guilty of this. My first suggestion is to add a notification when a player you reported gets punished, you don't have to tell us their name, but let us know that reporting people is doing something. R6: Siege recently did this and it made me feel a lot more valued for reporting cheaters. Secondly, punish players for DCing. Don't let them play another match for 15 minutes, and have that time increase with each DC. Also, give the killer chase points and full sacrifice points for the DCed person. People DC because it hurts the killer's score, so making it not do that as much will make them less inclined to do it. Some of you may disagree with the abandonment penalty, but I say to you, this is a Ranked game mode, people are trying to get higher ranks, letting your players punish the killer simply by leaving makes that person's time less valuable, and makes the rank less valuable. My additional suggestion is to add a casual mode alongside the abandonment penalty, so losing score doesn't matter as much, but it also allows players to try more wacky/gimmicky builds. The penalty would only apply to Ranked. I would also like a setting to disable post-game chat. I want to be able to read my score and stats without seeing someone call me demeaning and offensive terms because they didn't like that they died or that we escaped. Toxicity needs to be stomped out, this is a fun-addicting game with a very toxic community and WILL turn people away from it.
This is pretty much everything I wanted to talk about, this took me around one and a half hours to think of and write out, so a comment about something you agreed/disagreed with would be much appreciated. If you have any of your own suggestions I would love to hear them so we can start a discussion about it. The goal of this post is to be seen and read by the developers in the hopes of a brighter and better future for this amazing game. Right now I think BHVR doesn't listen to its community and doesn't truly care for the fan-base and the amazing title they've created. I want them to prove me wrong more than anything. I love this game, my friends love this game, and I know many of you love this game too. Let's try to make the game a better place for everyone. Thank you for reading.
Don't worry the devs will most likely never respond, and if they do it will be some smartass comment.

I am going to start out by stating I have been unable to find the same "magic" (I guess I'll call it) I've had before with DBD, may be it is just time for me to move on and either find another game or it could be time too give up gaming in general.... but time to move on too the hard stuff and this could potentially be difficult to discuss.
I made the choice to check on some DBD news knowing that the event was close and I discovered a letter from the team discussing "equal representation" and "giving sexual orientation" to the characters. Now IMO this is a poor move by the team because of the RPG element that this game currently has... maybe BHVR you can do this right but it has been done wrong many times before, the latest example is "The Last of Us 2", the players hate this game. Another example is "Batwoman" the tv series on CW. the batwoman tv series is an example of the saying "get woke, go broke", in just one season the show lost 1million viewers because of how hard they pushed the agenda. I really don't want to see a game that I am trying to get back into become a "Batwoman" or "TLOU 2" and seeing that letter set off a red flare telling me not to play because of where this game could be going, neither batwoman or "TLOU2" show "equal representation" please don't be like them!
Side note: I am also upset you released the event cosmetics to everyone. A portion of the community explained why they didn't want this to happen and since this move has happened you should mine as well release "legacy" to everyone. Players, especially the hardcore players want recognition..... if everyone is a winner what is there to actually play for?
that is all and as I said this may not be easy to discuss but it does need to be discussed, both choices could be signs of BHVR moving in a poor direction.
I cant understand why people defend companies with their representation pandering. In reality the company does not care about you they only want your money, and the whole representation crap is about driving up sales by appealing to a specific audience. And the best part is you cant criticize them about it or your a homophobic white supremacist.

Idk about other killers, but I am getting send to Haddonfield at least daily. There are four survivors and there is a high chance at least one of them will bring a map offering.
The map is just not fun. If the game gives it to us by chance, fine, but im sick of being brought there.
People are tunneling Lisa so that the devs will notice peoples problem with her, and I think killers should do the same with Haddonfield so the devs fix the map. Even if they don't fix it, survivors would stop spamming that offering if killers facecamp and tunnel.
I usually just play the match but if its a regular occurrence or im having a bad day i dc in the loading screen
-
i usually just play normally and if they don't have a crown and are a original character i let them leave

Not to mention overpriced, the "legendary" skins are literally just there to make more people spend more money on an overpriced under decorated skin. I LIKE mix and matching my skins, that's why I liked DBD's cosmetic system so much. Also, I do it because it's cheaper and I can make better-looking custom skins with it. But there was literally no point in adding legendary skins other than to make BHVR more money.
"Oh, but legendary skins change who the person is"
How about legion then? You can mix and match their cosmetics and still change who they are. Why can't we just keep doing this? And why is it more expensive than a normal outfit? That makes no sense. I'm not going to pay extra money just so I can have a "different" survivor because that is stupid. Please change this, it makes no sense.
I just dont buy them

This Clown of a killer is not really good. I don't think he's the worst killer but he still sucks. The worst killer in the game is Leatherface by far but we'll talk about him in another discussion, OK ?
For some info, Clown can throw bottles to slow down survivors, make their screen blurry and apply the Hindered status effect for 2.5 seconds after they leave the gas cloud. He starts with 4 bottles and reloading it takes 5 seconds. Your classic killer attributes, 115% speed, Tall and 32m TR.
GENERAL
Clown doesn't have any mobility. The survivors might be doing a gen in the other side of the map and by the time you get there its already %30 done if you know they are there. If you don't, it can be %50 (I'm not taking perks into account for now).
Clown is not lethal in any way. Clown can slow down survivors, sure, but you can hit them once and they go to the other side of the map. Whatever you do, you need to accept this when you are playing as Clown. Even if you say "What about the Redhead's Pinky Finger ?" One cool thing about the Redhead's Pinky Finger is you need to directly hit the survivor with your bottle. Unless the survivor is in your face, hitting bottles at survivors takes time, practice and a little bit of luck. So, its not very reliable.
THE AFTERPIECE TONIC
The really bad part about his bottles are it takes 5 seconds to reload his bottles and you get slowed IMMENSELY. You sometimes need 2 bottles to make the survivor intoxicated and good survivors will often not get intoxicated.
His power is not very reliable since hitting a survivor with a bottle doesn't do much if they are in a good tile. They just get slowed down but they can still make it to a pallet or a window if there is some distance between you and the survivor and even if you get a hit, unless they are injured they will just use that speed boost to go to another tile. Now you might say "But that's every M1 killer !" and you would be right but if the survivor can just take that speed boost to go the next tile then why did I slow the survivor down ? Its just pointless then, don't use your bottles and just mindgame. My point is, using your power correctly doesn't reward you like Billy's or Ghostface's does.
PERKS
PGTW : The best perk in the game imo.
Bamboozle : Helps you a lot if you are new.
Coulrophobia : It can be used in TR builds.
Overall, his perks are pretty solid. No question there.
WHAT CAN BE DONE
Just do simple things such as :
- Decrease the reload speed
- Add some sort of mobility or lethality to the killer
- Make his bottles slow down everything including the speed boost from getting hit
- Reward the player for landing direct bottle hits (not just +250 BPs and without addons)
and stuff like that. Imo these changes would make Clown a viable killer and a balanced one too.
What do you think ?
Clowns anti loop is quite good but not as good as huntress or deathslinger. he is more of a low risk low reward ranged killer
-
@XombieRocker said:
Radical rework idea:
Clown can place jack-in-the-boxes on generators. As survivors work on the gen, the handle turns and after a certain amount of progress has been made on gen, the jack-in-the-box pops open, giving the clown a notification and releasing a cloud of glass same as if a bottle had exploded above the gen.
Survs can disable jack-in-the-box by interacting with it for 10 seconds.
this would be interesting but seems like a huge time waste for clown. while he is placing one the survs could just be rushing a gen on the other side of the map
-
@LetsPlayTogether said:
As if any survivor would post on a killer biased forum that the gameplay as survior is a total meltdown. And no killer would dtick to survivor, cause if they played some games they would understand how horrible the experirence is in contrast to easy peasy killer.
The only way i ever just have casual fun in this game is a 3 or 4 man swf with comms. otherwise killer and solo survivor are a joke.
-
Double engravings billy is quite a fun challenge.
-
@caz_ said:
Yes he is a strong killer, his ability doesnt need a buff but the way they work.
this is my idea and opinion. 1. let him always start with 2 traps.
2.no random traps around the map.. instead you get your traps from lockers. that way he doesnt waste time going on the other side of the map to get a trap.
3.to balance that out he is just allowed to have 8 traps maximum around the map (can be increased with addons up to 10 -12 max)
4.the chance of escaping a trap = first attempt 3% chance, second one 5%, third one 8% and so on the more you try to get out the more the chances increases, you could also make it so that every survivor nearby increases the chance. it really sucks when survivors escape first try its really annoying.
just by these tweaks he would be so nice really.
This is great only one question, what would happen if his max amount of traps where all placed and he went to the locker to get more. would he get nothing or would it remove one of the already placed traps and give him a new one (sort of like how hag traps and snares work)

I am curious if you guys do both survivor and killer tomes or you just try to make it through as fast as possible doing one side. I try to complete both sides and klnock out the survivor ones first then do all the killer ones, seems to go smoothly and can finish the entire tome with time left if you grind it
I try to get to the charms first then i go back and do the rest of the challenges

Day after day we see a couple of new thread talking about how someone just had it with the game/playing killer, and is either, taking a break, or sticking to survivor.
Now, don't get me wrong. I understand there are plenty of stressful things when it comes to playing survivor as well.
I personally despise moris and NOED, as they do not reward skillful play by the killer.
We know the game's balance is kind of whack, and that the devs have no idea how to fix SwF vs solos skill gap, tunnelling, camping, map (yes, there are still some maps that need more work),
Yet, the majority of posts concerning frustration, comes from killers. I myself have taken two breaks from the game in the spam of one and half year ish (I joined a couple of months before plague)
And I've seen plenty of people talking about doing the same, taking breaks from playing killer or altogether.
A despite a plethora of "killer meltdown" posts, they seem to focus "mostly", on fixing things that are frustrating for survivors, all the while, neglecting the other side of the community. Looking at the doc, ruin, nurse (this one in particular) legion.
I know the game is not dying, and I'm glad for it. I love the game, and I believe most of us who are pretty vocal around do. I just think that this kind of stressful experience, having people quit, take breaks can't be healthy for any game.
Thus my question, are the devs proud of having people quitting/taking breaks every single week? Wouldn't it be better to sit down with the "whole" community and listen closely to feedback (frustrating outdated mechanics, items, strategies, balance). You know, trying to improve the lasting experience, not only for the average player like me, but also for the k plus hour vets, and specially, the new players?
TLDR: devs need to sit down with the community, and figure it out a way improve the experience for both parties, mostly killers, as they seem to be the ones quitting the game more frequently due to frustration.
It's really sad how this game can be out for 4 years now and still be unbalanced. But at least for me the actual state of the game isn't my main issue, its the lack of communication from the devs and updates that only release on a fixed schedule. If only they could tell us (the paying customers) actually when things will be fixed and when MMR will come out, its infuriating how we the customers are basically neglected by the company.

NOED IS ALL WE HAAAAVE. T_T
I like noed the way it is. Survivors have crutch perks like BT and DS. We also have crutch perks like NOED.
the only problem with DS is the amount of time it lasts 60 sec is too long for basically immortality when a gen takes 80 sec. BT is more of a crutch perk because it doesn't require you to make smart unhooking choices just hook rush.
-
Personally its not as fun as killer, but playing survivor is a lot less stressful. each side has upsides and downsides. While killer is more exiting and entertaining is is quite stressful. At the same time survivor is not as action packed as killer is but is less stressful than killer is.
-
The even is alright in my opinion but I really wish we had 2x bloodpoints or at the very least 1.5x
-
This perk and ds are mostly fine as they are now, but when you combine the two its not very fair at all.
-
@BigBrainMegMain said:
What's the point?
You get DS'ed, then complain about it. Then start making threads calling for the nerf of DS because you couldn't get an easy kill.
DS is mostly fine as it is what im trying to say is I try not to down survivors that just got unhooked and i try not to stay near the hook even when someone is nearby. Its not fun being downed right as you get unhooked as survivor or having someone loop the killer in font of you while your hooked, but when you try to make the game fun for you and the opposite team they see that and rush the gens because by not slugging or looping someone around a hook when you can you essentially forfeit the extra pressure
-
I would honestly love a fnaf chapter, but the fanbase is what makes me not want it

Trust me it works in Rank 1 Survivor games like a charm. The Blood Pact build is universally useful and really doesn't have any real weaknesses.
- Blood Pact (tells you where to get heals with Leader anywhere on the map. creates an obsession. shared information can prevent gen interrupts and give you more awareness in chase or while the obsession is being chased. essentially gives the obsession a 5th perk slot because all effects are shared. also the speed boost and tendency for you to meet eachother in the middle because Auras are shared helps make up some of the time lost healing)
- Leader (speeds up heal time to get even more mileage from Blood Pact. helps with double heals as well. unhook speed prevents hook grabs. anti-slug because you get picked up faster. clutch for exit gates-provides the fastest gate opening boost in the game)
- Iron Will (one of the best perks in the game. helps mindgame Killer in chase. allows you to be more safe while injured so you can be comfortable without heals if the Obsession is being chased or you need to rush a gen)
- Dead Hard (one of the best perks in the game. like Iron Will it allows you to have a higher level of safety while being injured. also amazing for extending loops, baiting hits etc.)
The reason why this build is so dang good is because its centered around increasing your survivability and helping your teammates. It has healing built into it, but gets value even against Killers like Plague and Legion because, unlike perks like We'll Make It, Botany Knowledge, Self-Care and Inner Strength, the perks have value outside of pure healing. Leader and Blood Pact are both multi-purpose. And Iron Will and Dead Hard give you options to work with if you can't get heals right away, so you shouldn't be afraid to stay injured for periods of time.
If you've got Heather (Cheryl) unlocked and want to try a new build, give this one a shot. It's extremely consistent and you'll get value from every perk, every game, no matter the Killer or Map.
Seems pretty good actually, but just personally i prefer sprint burst

I dont want to be sexist but 3 of the best killers in the game are females: Nurse, Hag and Spirit, and I think it's a bit weird. I really like their powers and all, and I really dont want to offend anybody, but I suddenly thought about this and decided to start a discussion.
Either way, with the adition of Pyramid Head, I think we need a female killer now, just to even things up.
What about instead of worrying about the characters gender, race, or sexuality we should be more focused on how unique and fun to play they are.

It's now 2 3 day I never see the new map
Im so glad, that map is so bad i just dc when i get it

I think this would be great as a single survivor sort of like how legion is. This could also make good use of the new jointed cosmetic system, but would require them all to be actually different not the ######### ones we have now.

I was wondering if you needed to have Deathslinger bought to claim the daily cosmetic pieces? I haven't gotten any pop-up saying to claim it when I've logged in. I did look at the store to see that I have one cosmetic piece for Deathslinger, but I have no way to check if it's frosty eyes or some extra cosmetic piece you get for free.
In the store there is a button under the i that when you hover over says filters, click that button and then press show all items. After that go to the head cosmetic slot and scroll to the bottom, it should be there. you can do this for any character even ones you don't own.

Literally no reason. Adding something to the end game to show who is a swf or isn't wouldn't hurt the game at all. The only thing that would change is the players in the swf being toxic in end game chat who say your just bad and they are all solos.

My sob story was meant to be hard to believe as it's not true. This is what some people sound like who are whining that the cosmetics were given out to everyone as if it somehow affects them in any way.
Ah i see what you were getting at now, You definitely got me good.😂
-
well this would definitely make certain killers more viable, but it would also have the negative effect of making some killers too strong

@goatslinger said:
I think I speak for everyone about how outraged I am about the "exclusive" cosmetics. I know there are others of you who have a similar experience to mine and it's just not fair. I sacrificed so much to get that huntress mask. First, I lost my job from calling in sick every day so I could grind for the cosmetic. Soon, I realized sleep was holding me back so I started using substances that kept me awake...substances that i'm still hooked on. My wife left me because by the time the event was over I could not even remember her name. My children no longer speak to me because I forgot their birthdays and to top it off my dog died. I forgot to feed him for 2 weeks due to me doing so much grinding.
But you know what? It was worth it. I could play huntress with pride and look down upon the soiled fools in plain old huntress masks. I would scoff at them and send them screen shots of my mask after games. Now, behavior has stripped me of that. Stripped me of everything I have worked so hard for and just given them out all willy nilly. IT'S NOT FAIR!!
Ok first of all your sob story is hard to believe. Second did you read what bhvr had to say about it. and third imagine grinding for these cosmetics, getting them and then losing them on fault of the devs. this was the main reason they did this so that people who earned the cosmetics and lost them through no fault of their own could still get them. Also stop using cosmetics to be toxic they literally mean nothing
-
@Brightened said:
I know BVHR stands with the LGBTQIA+ community, but I'm wondering if we will see any super cute pride outfits? I think it could be a cute idea.
Most people don't play games for politics and although representation is a good thing, adding cosmetics that only appeal to a single group of people could alienate more players than it would seek to bring together. Also another downside would be certain killer players tunneling and camping survivors wearing these cosmetics, or survivors going out of there way to bully killers with cosmetics such as these.

-
The crowns themselves aren't bad at all. The main disappointment is the inability to use them with any cosmetic, although i don't see how bhvr could even implement that

Legacy is never coming back. They’re probably just going to create a new cosmetic, but going higher than p3 is a bad idea. The players that have played for years p3,d their characters ages ago and have old offerings and event items that they’re not going to want to lose just to prestige again.
I mean its lot like you have too prestige to any level at all, i have a bunch of event items and every perk on my hillbilly this makes me not want to prestige him at all. That being said this would mostly be for people who already have everything unlocked and no reason to keep playing. My idea would essentially improve replayability as well as encouraging players who have no reason to play to come back to the game.
-
Currently ds is a fine perk except for the amount of time it is active, that is literally the only problem.
-
never

Something that will at least help a bit in the future is making event exclusive charms to go along with the event and make only the charms unobtainable in the future but give away the actual cosmetics later

Was wondering since I got the hound mask and davids jacket when I didn't have them before. Is this just a bug?
Although i very much appreciate getting these cosmetic items, actually fixing the game and communicating to customers more efficiently and consistently would be much better.

If you couldn't crouch over the trails he would seem more like a map manipulation killer. Also his ranged attack should really apply torment too, with these 2 changes and maybe a torment decay of something like 3 min he would definitely be a lot more viable

your idea would work better the other way around. Personally i think ds lasts a bit too long otherwise its fine the way it is
