Would it be fairer to killers? Definitely. Is it ever going to happen? No way. Far too many people like playing with multiple friends and BHVR is not going to lose them.

Ever be the first one found by the killer, get into a long chase, wonder why no gens are popping, get hooked, and finally see 2 teammates are crouched on the periphery on the map with the final not being visible because they are in a locker?
*attempts to unhook self*

Pop Goes the Weasel just popped up. Top-tier killer perk.

I see why the change was made. Playing against SWF is miserable experience, especially if you are going a bunch of high rank survivors. Maybe they could average the two highest rank survivors instead of just the highest rank survivor.

Many things have free versions: it's a small taste to get people to buy the paid version. As they unlock the free stuff, they'll also keep seeing the paid stuff that they're not getting, and repeated exposure to that will make them more and more likely to dish out the money.
I'm not saying free stuff is bad, I'm just saying it's not altruistic. It's a practical business decision. Kinda like places in mall food courts that give out free samples.
Unfortunately, so many have such a surface level perspective, they fail to see this.
-
It is such a necessity. Without it a killer loses 2-3 gens by the time they hook one survivor. It just goes downhill from there. Fixing the gen speed or adding a secondary objective would go a long way.

I don't care about being told something I might not like, I just want them to be transparent and straightforward. Not answering a question because you're nervous about the answer is a pretty sure sign that you're doing something stupid. That's just, like, a life tip in general.
I do not think it is some shocking or evil thing that they are trying to sustain profits in this game. It's a business, this is a product, and that is how the world turns. I recognize that they have the premium track as a monetization element. That's OK; they don't need to be shy about it. I just want them to directly address some of the more consistent concerns and share their perspective. It frustrates me more when they don't do that.
And, as a result, the stream frankly came off as a sort of vacuous infomercial filled with what I interpreted as fake enthusiasm.
It came across as an infomercial because that is what it was. Infomercials do not list the negatives for something. They are trying to sell it to you, not be transparent. The main concern people had was that it is impossible to finish for all but the most hardcore players. I have said this before, that is the whole point. They want you to spend money to upgrade the tiers.
People are less likely engage if they know this ahead of time. They want people to start it. That's when the psychological effects kick in, including FOMO and sunk cost. Battle passes were initially a free to play mechanic and free to play games are not known for their monetization being thoughtful of players.
I am not going to say this is "evil." It is impersonal. DBD has a relatively small but dedicated community. People may think this gives them more of relationship with those who make the game. The implementation of a battle pass (and the long term practice of using paid perks to correct flaws in the game) shows that this is wrong. You are x amount of potential $ to them. They look to maximize x.

To me it's not an issue of "correct things based on our input," because that comes off a bit entitled (I don't mean this as a personal attack or insult; I just think a lot of forum users expect an outsized level of influence on the development of the game).
It's more that I'm disappointed at the lack of transparency and clarification about concerns that have been raised. I want them to elaborate more on why they feel this or that is a positive direction or why they made the choices that they did. Like, what led to this system being implemented this way? Why are they confident that players shouldn't be too concerned about the things they have expressed concerns about?
If your question isn't answered, the answer is usually the one they think you don't want to hear. The point of this pass is the increase and maximize monetization, any other motives are secondary or irrelevant. It is likely not meant to be completed through gameplay for anyone except people who play this game for a job. They want you to pay for the battle pass and pay to unlock the tiers. Every tier that is accessible is one less $1 for them.
-
Not surprised. Pretty clear what direction this game is going in. They've been silent here about the battle pass, no reason to expect the stream would be any different.
-

why did they have to make this a thing? what's the point of making rewards on the rift time-limited?
just explain to me, why.
all it is making is making players that want to move to pc lose all the stuff they have and not being able to earn it back because it was a timed-exclusive, even though they've been playing for thousands of hours and several years.
just ew
If they are time limited, you are more likely to pay real money to advance the tiers. They also have specific sets split up in multiple levels. If you have 2 pieces of the set and the battle pass will end before you can get the last piece, you won't complete it unless you pay real money to advance the tiers.

70-100 hours is just as in other games with battle pass. What's the problem? It's definitely achievable in 70 days.
Plus it's only cosmetics. Plus they will have a stream about it this Thursday
People who have done the math say otherwise. Not to mention much of the rift progression comes through challenges, some of which are ridiculous and will take numerous tries. Add on top of that you can only have one challenge active at a time.
Cosmetics matter. There is no "only cosmetics." Would you be okay with all the characters wearing potato sacks? If you are, then you can say "only cosmetics."
-
I don't think there should be an "end" per se. The gameplay is the primary focus. I think the lore justifies why these "trials" keep happening along with some the odd things you see. Why is Michael Myers chasing Steve from Stranger Things? Why is a Babylonian Priestess vomiting on Detective Tapp from the Saw movies? We don't even think twice about these things because the lore does it's job well.

No way dude, need to keep making $$$ with the new chapters.

Ghostface is strong without stalking. Trapper is decent but really annoying and needs quality of life changes.
Agreed. Ghost Face seems better without an emphasis on stalking. He can remove his terror radius and red stain at will, which let's him easily sneak up on people. Also helps with loops, since so many survivors depend on seeing the red stain. He can find survivors easily by running out in the open with Night Shroud activated. If there is an easy survivor to stalk go for it, but don't depend on it.

This, so much.
NOTE: This started out as a comment but I feel like it warrants its own thread. You can find it here: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/95577/battlepass-tracks-should-not-expire-once-bought-players-should-be-able-to-pick-one-as-active/
Once bought, you should be able to complete the different battlepass tracks whenever you want.
People who can't finish them on time should not have to spend even more money to get the stuff they want. When the next track releases the current one expires, and if someone hasn't finished the old one yet then that will put them behind on the next track.
I don't even think that Behaviour would lose out on money: With the current system the players might get frustrated after a while and stop buying the battlepasses altogether. If they were able to finish them whenever they wanted, at their leisure, they might keep buying them, and maybe spend money on some of their old tracks to finish them.
Example: A players has purchased the first two battlepass tracks, and not finished them. The third track releases. The player decides to mark the new track as the active one to progress on it. The player also uses Auric Cells to finish off the first battlepass track to get it out of the way. This is a much more consumer friendly because there is no fear of missing out if that player does not finish it before the next battlepass track releases. Behaviour still makes money from the sale of the three battlepass tracks and the Auric Cells used to finish the first track.
This way you could even bring back some of the old battlepass tracks that people might have missed out on, for example new players who didn't even play when that specific battlepass released. The way the system is currently set up I don't think this is possible.
By bringing back old battlepass tracks and letting players choose which track they want to progress on Behaviour can even make more money than with the current system, while at the same time players won't feel like they are missing out. It is more consumer friendly while at the same time allowing Behaviour to make more money off each individual battlepass track release because they can bring the old ones back in the future.
Example: There is another free weekend. A lot of new players try out the game. Some of them like it and want to buy it. They see the exclusive battlepass cosmetics / charms.
- Scenario 1: They realize that they can not ever get those items because they did not play when the battlepass track released. Because they can never have all the content due to being new they decide not to buy the game after all.
- Scenario 2: The old battlepass tracks are put back on sale for the weekend and the week after. The potential new players like the game, like the cosmetics they have seen and buy the game and the old battlepass tracks. Behaviour makes more money and the new players are happy.
There are two downsides that I can see:
- the ability to switch between tracks needs to be implemented and I cannot gauge the amount of work required for that so I am not going to comment on that further
- players may be upset because the battlepass does not give them true exclusives, the charms, as the other cosmetics are going to be put in the store after a while
Behaviour has decided to not make exclusive (streamer) cosmetics anymore as people were upset that they couldn't get them easily outside of something like purchasing them on eBay for large amounts of money. As the charms appear to be a violation of this new policy I feel like that this is strong support for the implementation of the ability to switch between and complete old battlepass tracks.
A thread discussing this can be find the Feedback subforum, here: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/95577/battlepass-tracks-should-not-expire-once-bought-players-should-be-able-to-pick-one-as-active/
The FOMO aspect is part of the business plan. They want you to feel the time crunch and make it difficult to complete with just gameplay, as a result people will pay real money to advance the tiers. The time limit is not going anywhere.
-
I'm not sure who's side you are taking here. If a game allows exploitative tactics, people will use it. The only way to make sure this does not happen is to discourage or remove it.

I disagree that they've done it intentionally. They may make mistakes sometimes, but they're not stupid, and they know we're not stupid either. They knew people would have two weeks to try it out and they knew that we would do the maths. It would make no sense, knowing that, to quote what they knew to be an inaccurate figure because all it would do is hurt their business. It's not like they're getting money out of it from excited people buying passes before the truth comes out, because no one can buy passes for another week. If they really wanted to scam impulsive people out of their money with false advertising, they wouldn't have released that information until the Rift passes were available to purchase.
Unless we assume that the developers know nothing about human psychology or smart business practices (and the success of their game would suggest otherwise), there is no rational reason to believe that they set out to deceive players. The much more likely explanation is that they simply didn't take certain things into account in their calculations, which also matches up better with their actions in the past. Most of the time when they release a change and later reverse it, it's because the players tested the feature and demonstrated why it didn't work as well in practice as in theory. That's the entire point of a PTB.
They are not stupid. They are testing how stupid we are. There is no benevolence here. They will take as much money as we allow.
DBD probably has a more intelligent player base than most games. The game is all about tactical thinking and not fast reflexes which get you very little here. So are we going to fall into the same thing Fortnite and CoD players have gotten into?

You can't play this game and not learn to plan ahead. Use that now. They will take as much money as we will give them. If this is accepted, other things will come. It has happened time and time again in other games. A mutually beneficial business arrangement is possible with manipulating your customers You do not want this game going down the road of CoD and sports games.

This is how it starts. It always starts with cosmetics. That's what happened with CoD. Now they putting weapons, a competitive advantage, in loot boxes.

I understand his argument.
I just don't see why the devs have to cater to people that rarely play their game. The whole reason this game is unbalanced is because of mindsets like this.
This isn't about casuals and hardcore players. Most of the people who play this game will play a couple hours a day. They will not be able to finish the pass in the time allowed. You will have to play several hours a day and unless you play this game for a living it will not happen.
This is about money plain and simple. They do not want you to pay just $10, they want you to play $10 plus even more money for the tiers.
-
You will see your progress in the pass regardless of whether or not you buy it. You will have unlocked portions of certain outfits if you play it. The rest of the set is further down the line, encouraging you to spent money to unlock the tiers if you haven't spend the absurd amount of time progressing. There is a lot of manipulation going on here.

I’m not stuck on the money, but you are stuck on insisting people who don’t put enough time into the game don’t get everything... uhm that’s the real world.
Yea I get it, it stinks that having a job, kids, social life means you may not be able to complete it all but that’s just the way it goes sometimes.
Only that way because people allow it. All scarcity in video games is artificial.

I think a good 50-65 hours is okay.
The skins should be exclusive though
What is the deal with people like yourself? Why the obsession with getting things that other people cannot have?
Exclusivity in games is a pain. FOMO is used to great effect to get people to pay up before it is "gone." It is gone artificially. It is not an actual item that they only made so many of. It was removed with a few keyboard clicks and could come back the same way. Whether it is paid or earned content, it should always to available as long as the game is around.

You already received the game you paid for. You are not entitled to free content for the rest of your life just because you made the initial purchase. If you buy a burger at Mcdonald's do you assume you are entitled to a free lunch for the rest of your life?
Absolutely no one is saying that. You are creating a straw man. Plenty of people buy the new chapters when they come out and many buy the cosmetics as well. This system has served the game well for years and they have grown many times over. They are certainly making money. Now they are opening up a 3rd stream of revenue that is based in free 2 play games and psychological manipulation. Of course a business wants to make money, but there is certain point where it is too egregious.
DBD is a cult game with a stable but not large player base that should be treated well. I think this game requires a lot more thought than most. Honestly, I am surprised so many of you are defending this.

I would be very surprised.
At the moment the only thing stopping everyone from being mad and quitting is everything behind the rift/archive grind is cosmetic.
That would be the point of no return.
Most DBD players are not on the forums. Some would certainly see it as a major convenience. Pay 5 bucks to get Ruin and another 5 to get BBQ on the killer of your choice, without having to grind for 10s of hours as Hag and Bubba. Or you can grind and deal with the randomness of the bloodweb. The system might as well have been made for monetization.

Imagine paying the developers to be able to grind for content. Battle passes stink and I'll have no part of it. Free stuff is cool I guess but not worth the full buy.
The "free" stuff is just there to bring you in. There is a whole lecture on it called "Let's go whaling" on YouTube. Goes through all the psychology of getting people invested without them spending money, once they have gone from habit to hobby the monetization hits hard.
Same thing with the battle pass. You will see yourself leveling up the tiers even if you have not paid for the pass. Maybe some cosmetics you want, so you get the pass. The thing is individual sets are separated by the tiers and some of the gaps are pretty large. They even have part of a set in the free tier and rest in the paid tier. Unless you are spending hours a day during this game, you will not finish it. You have already invested time, energy, and the initial $10 into the pass. Are you going to miss out? It is time limited after all. What is the solution? Paying to increase the tiers with real money.

I'm going to give you support right off the bat. I made a thread about this a couple days ago and got roasted.
Tonight I learned the battle pass is far worse than I thought. The requirements to complete it obscene and not feasible for a casual gamer. That is the point, because you can pay real money to move up the tiers. They have every incentive to make it as grindy and unpleasant as possible. To make it even worse, the Halloween event is tied to the battle pass.
These are free to play monetization tactics in a game that can be quite expensive if you buy the chapters and some cosmetics. Unfortunately, more and more full price games are doing this as well, simply because gamers allow it. That is how we went from Horse Armor 15 years ago to where to we are now.

Or, you could simply learn the game and unlock them normally. I hate when devs balance for the majority instead of the top players who have much more knowledge about the game. My time on the PTB, I got pretty far into both the archives and the battle pass, plus they are both available for an entire month, which is more then enough time for casual players too get everything.
Everything we read above says it is not feasible for casuals to unlock everything. That is the point. They want you to spend real money to finish the pass.
-
I got roasted the other day for making a thread about the battle pass being bad news. I did not know the extent. This is obscene and exactly how these things usually go. They have every incentive to encourage people to buy the tiers outright by making it as difficult and grindy as possible. When there is monetary method to circumvent the game mechanics, it is never a positive thing.
