I started DBD in May this year (2023), so was also pretty new, and by DBD standards now at near 800 hrs, I'm still pretty much a baby.

However the big issue really is that DBD is a complex game with a lot of subtle mechanics. It's the same thing as something like Counter Strike. You can learn the basic idea in 10 minutes, but to actually get to the point you're not getting 1-bulled the moment you turn a corner takes at least a couple of months.

What helped me more than anything was watching content creators for both killer and survivor side to understand key concepts/ideas quickly, such as: -

    • What a 3-gen is for both killer and survivor.
    • What a "strong" pallet is, and why you loop it (survivor), break it (killer).
    • Which characters to go for early for good teachable perks. E.g. Meg and Kate or Feng / Hillbilly and Clown or Legion.
    • What a T-L wall is, and why you want to loop it clockwise (survivor), anti-clockwise (killer).
    • Basic loop mind games like pallet/window fakes (survivor), and hiding your red light (killer).
    • Especially for Killer, watch a guide on how to play that killer.

That said, I do sympathise with a lot of these issues. I'm making sure to tell everyone of the THANKYOUFOR60M code to get off the starting blocks. 1.2 million BP is a character level to unlock something, and the shards get you well on the way to a new character for the same pretty early.

    1. I agree a new player BP bonus would be welcome for at least the first 3-5 million BP or so. That would be enough to complete a season and start getting something going to a reasonable degree.
    2. This is a new issue with the loss of the Stranger Things general perks. Short of making new perks, a new player bonus to iridescent shards drops early on would help them pick up a character they want early and potentially get some decent perks... at the very least, they can unlock someone they want to play to stay invested.
    3. Not sure on this one... your friend tried changing to colour blind mode? I've not played with it myself, but a mate of mine with Colour blindness seemed fine when he changed the colour blind settings... though wasn't his type of game. I found out later he doesn't like horror at all... so fair play really xD

In truth though my advice to any new player, seriously consider before you start if you'd be happy to buy the paid DLC, and factor that in to your decision to play it.

Licenses can be pulled any time (Stranger Things), and if you want to get the most out of the game you will likely consider buying the paid DLC anyway. So have a serious think, if this is the kind of game you'd likely enjoy, and actually consider putting the money into.

If the colorblind settings were good enough to help them I wouldnt have mentioned it.

The issue is there are a lot of things which really are not accessible. Chucky's Tiffany skin on Ormand was insanely difficult for them to see, it's white on white, and the footsteps blend in with the snowy map, something as basic as that should be considered when designing a Killer. That's just a single example, and there are dozens more that Im probably not even aware of.

So this is a bit of a tangent on why I think generic perks should be stronger and cover more parts of gameplay including ones that brand new players might not think about or quite need yet.

New players to dbd have very limited options in terms of perks which is fine because for a while they will go up against newer players, however as they play for longer their limit of options starts hurting as they start to improve and face better players and the idea of the kinds of perks and effects they might want and or need are never introduced to them with the perks they are likely to have access to early on.

Part of this problem comes from the limitations of generic perks on both sides. Survivors don't have any good self healing ability from generic perks (after the stranger things perks were made no longer generic) and killers don't have any perks that help them tend to objectives, while on paper this should be fine since newer players shouldn't think about healing themselves as much as others and slowing objectives like more skilled players might have to I think the logic is off on why they shouldn't have them.

Eventually newer players will start going against better players as they improve over time, which means starting to face better players without having access to any kinds of these perks or very limited amounts assuming they unlock or buy a character or two can hinder their experience. Generic perks should provide a range of options both for new players and to help new players bridge the gap to becoming more experienced. From perks that might help new players feel less impact from their mistakes like unrelenting to introducing the idea of alternative forms of healing and slowdown perks like what surge and inner strength / second wind did. New perks should have a breath of knowledge to teach and decent all around strength below what a specialized build offers but still enough to do decently across the board.

I think removing these perks from the pool and giving them back to their respective dlcs are fine but leaving the gaps under the guise of new players don't need it isn't quite right because its not about where they are its about making a smooth transition to where they are going.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/2QB68R6DIOW4/image.png

(yes I stole the otz chart)

To remedy this I think there should be new generic perks in the game as introductions to these kinds of affects and abilities to give the new players a bridge into more difficult ideas and gameplay elements and in general some of the weaker perks should be buffed if they don't fill a niche of supporting new players.

Some ideas for alternative healing / slowdown

Denting blows : Upon hitting a survivor this perk activates, hitting a generator with a basic attack regresses the generator 4/4.5/5% of its max progression and applies normal gen regression this perk then deactivates

Something something healing: Whenever you complete healing another survivor you gain a stack, when you have 2 stacks this perk activates, upon completing a healing action while injured you lose 2 stacks, instantly heal 1 health state and the perk deactivates (you don't get a stack off this effect) you heal other survivors 0/5/10% faster

(added idea, some kind of hex perk to pair up with thrill of the hunt, on its own thrill provides nothing but with another hex perk with an actual effect thrill now gives the idea of using other hex perks to also protect totems kind of like a gateway to understanding the point of haunted grounds and undying)

Im all for making the New Player Experience better, Ive made many suggestions in the past regarding it, and I still think it should be improved.

Regardless of how people feel about it, the New Player Experience should always be considered, we need a stream of new players joining the game for the game to thrive and flourish.

  • I hope this doesnt come off the wrong way, but this is the funniest thread Ive ever read.

  • Foxes... they are the animal of all time, being a weird mix of a cat and a dog.

They are also very vocal and expressive compared to other animals, and they have their own set of tones and noises which indicate how they are feeling. When in an altercation, foxes will just scream at the other fox until one gives up.

They are also the only species loosely based on Canines that can climb trees vertically, they have retractable claws that they can use to dig into the bark of trees and climb them. When nesting, they will either dig holes or live in the holes of trees (if high enough). They are omnivores and will often bury their food.

They also are not aggressive towards humans. A lot of foxes are incredibly smart and are willing to build up trust with humans, which has slowly lead to a domestication process, you can own one as a pet but it requires a license to do so.

  • BHVR (the developers) can prevent certain Killers, Perks, Maps, and Items from being used.

The reason for this is to prevent people from exploiting game breaking bugs.

Next update should fix the Knight, though Im sorry you have to deal with the inconvenience of this.

  • Original Freddy was HORRIBLE... but they were fun and unique.

I kind of miss playing them as well, mainly since Im not looking for powerful meta stuff, Im looking to have fun.

  • @jamally093 said:

Because in the dream world he has a terror radius but it's none directional so is it a pass as it doesn't full count as a terror radius?

    That's a Lullaby, not a Terror Radius.

Survivors in the Dream World are Oblivious, which means they are not considered to be within the Terror Radius (minor exceptions apply).

  • I personally think that any Hook-based challenge that must be completed in a single match should display as (Current Hooks) / (Total Hooks Needed) instead of 1 / 1. In this case, it would show as 5 / 6, and would make a lot more sense in terms of brevity.

Well it seems like DBD mobile is way better than DBD in many parts including designing outfits, so yeah. Hope BHVR can take these some good costumes from mobile to here as many as possible.

Just to clarify, DBD mobile has removed a lot of content that people paid for which has caused a lot of negativity surrounding the game; keep in mind they have to rebuy everything, they dont get to keep it.

  • You dont run slower, but you are more likely to be caught on objects since you are not looking ahead to see where you are going.

The most ideal thing is to periodically check to see where you are going but still keeping your focus on having LOS on the Killer.

  • There is no such thing as a "perfect game" since there are too many factors that matter independent of how either side plays.

E.g. the Killer, the map, perks, loop location and density, pallet spawns (or lack there of), etc, etc.

  • You know some people can just have awful internet.

I live out in the woods, meaning my ping is not consistent. Sometimes I have a nice 40 ms, sometimes I have 1100+ ms.

  • Well I have no reason to concern myself too much with the game. I play for fun, and if there is something in the game that I dont like, Ill just do my own thing and create my own fun.

  • @Xendritch said:

Yeah, it was pretty awful. And I was a new player at the time, I had no idea what was going on.

Though the situation wasn't good for seasoned players either, having to play against a killer like that one. I guess, when they saw Legion, many players just went into a frenzy. A Feral Frenzy.

Yea, I understand it. A lot of players would just instantly give up because it wasnt fun, leading to DCing and giving up on hook. The rest of the team was basically Dead... By Daylight.

  • @GeneralV said:

    That is an understatement.

That Legion is one of the few things from the past that I do not miss, and if I don't miss something then you know that something was BAD.

The only thing I miss was the spam swinging in Feral Frenzy because it was goofy... but every other part about his kit was horrible.

I guess you can say, that everyone was that time was dealing with... Darkness Among Them.

  • @humanbeing1704 said:

To be fair how did they make legion less fun to play? The previous version was unbearable crap

I think they are talking about original Legion... which like... the original version of Legion was horrible, and was only held together by two rubberbands and a bandaid.

Otz just released a new video on some impressive winstreaks on killer. Beside Scotts Bubba speed limiter streak and Fungoose Plague streak, they are relative recent and some still ongoing.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5PKg4HPjnE

When i see that a mediocre killer like Wraith is capable of winning over 40 times in a row (1st and only try!) without loosing more then 2 gens or a Blight that wins 1600+ times in a row, or a Nurse winning 500+ times and ongoing without even using addons or perks - this begs the question:

Should this be a thing? And where did the ballance go? Keep in mind, survivors are currently at 38 wins in a row solo and 200 wins in a row as SWF, done by one if not the best team in the world.

    Opinions?

I personally dont think it says much.

It's much easier to do a Winstreak as Killer since you only have to coordinate with yourself.

For Survivor, you can SoloQ but you are at the mercy of your teammates and matchmaking; you can SWF but you have to coordinate with other players and not everyone is constantly available to play which makes things harder to manage.

Also you have to consider that not many people try to go for Winstreaks on Survivor compared to Killer, most Survivors are not really sweaty and tends to lean a bit more casual (at least from my experience, but since it is anecdotal, take it with a grain of salt).

I'm lost. I don't play the mobile game but to your main point - I think it would increase diversity, that's why I want it.

For example, I really want to play Gabriel Soma tonight, but he's out of stuff.

If I could use offerings that I have on my high prestige characters, I would play him tonight.

Could you explain why you think it would decrease diversity?

I'm not saying you're wrong, I just wondered if you could clarify or rephrase.

I don't get what flashlights have to do with it.

    Sorry, I'm slow sometimes 😔

If I have 20 different characters that each have 10 Flashlights each, if the Inventories were shared across characters, all of my items can be used on any character.

Because of this, I have no incentive to use a different character other than the ones I enjoy, because the items are shared across all inventories.

    Former Rin Yamaoka main here,

Everybody was too blind to see and understand that giving a indicator that she was using her power, butchered her kit.

On top of that, with how frequent sounds break and perks that literally nullify all survivor sounds, why even play her?

I still possess a lot of love for Rin Yamaoka, but from a survivor prespesctive she's been added to my list of killer's I don't enjoy playing against because all you need to counter her is "A good headset" (as we used to say back in the day if you wanted to learn her)

Are you referring to the animations she used?

The only indicator was a bug where her hair's animation would reset but depending on when they starting phasing you wouldnt see it, which eventually got fixed anyways meaning it was not even sufficient counterplay to begin with. She never had an official animation for when she started phasing.

If I remember correctly there were a lot of myths spread around regarding "when she started phasing" that turned out to be untrue, such as:

    • "Her glass shards would sparkle when she started phasing," was completely untrue, I dont know how people even thought that it was a thing.
    • "Her hands move upwards when she started phasing," was also a flat out lie used to mislead people since that was just part of her idle animation set.
    • "Her facial expressions would change," was also not true since her facial animations are independent from other animations.
  • Think about it like this:

    • The 200+ Flashlights I have become useable across all characters... BUT there is less of an incentive to play different characters and it will reduce Survivor variety.

I know some person is going to bring up DBD Mobile having this mechanic but DBD Mobile is functionally different since getting items is more difficult than in normal DBD.

  • Ive been playing it since 2018, started in Chapter 1 Season 3 but didnt start grinding the battlepasses until Chapter 1 Season 4 onwards. For reference, I started playing when I was in the 8th Grade... Im now in College working on my Art Education degree.

As for what I enjoy, Ive been collecting certain skins, Im working on slowly collecting any Raven/Ravage related skin... mainly since my main skin is Ravage. I also collect robot skins as well, so I use Rebel and Revolt a lot as well.

I use to play on Controller and was pretty damn good at it but since I moved to PC Ive been trying to learn Keyboard and Mouse which is far more difficult than I original thought. Building is pretty tricky for me but my aim isnt too bad.

If anyone is interested, my Epic User is the same as my Username on any other platform, so adding me isnt too hard.

  • Very rarely do Killers run Hex Totems nowadays, the most youll see is Plaything with Pentimento or someone running Adept Chucky but that's about it really.

  • Thrilling Tremors is the alternative perk to BBQ, trading off accurate information for slowdown.

The issue is that neither perk is used anymore, especially after BBQ being nerf and players adapting to playing without the information.

I think this is doable now, too, it's just there are too many of them exploding.

When I play killer I play with a clear set of codex/rules:

    - Everyone hangs once before anyone hangs twice

    - No one hangs twice in a row unless it is hang nr. 4 and 5

    - No one dies before everyone has been hanged twice

    - Leave room for unhooks, don't knock down any individual going for the unhook

    - I allow myself to knock down survivors just to buy time/keep survivors busy, but I don't hook them

    - Any survivor that fails to unhook someone that could have been saved is off my codex, and becomes a target of me not necessarily playing nice. If one die then all die (quickly), unless they were not able to perform a unhooking at the time (like if they were in a dying states, as an example)

    - If I survivors reach 2 gens left and my progress as a killer is bad then I allow myself to take the gloves off, and play more dirty, codex is pushed aside

    - If I use a survivor to get another survivor, then the survivor I use gets to escape (like if there are three survivors left; one is hooked, one is hidden and the last is on the ground with me. The hidden one hides instead of going for the unhook. The hooked die on hook, I pick up the survivor on the ground near me, let him (or her) wiggle off, then I go find the one survivor that could have performed the unhook, kill that survivor, and then let the last survivor escape, because I kept him (or her) alive to get to the one that failed the unhook.)

    - Probably a couple more points but I can't remember right now as I'm tired.

Usually when I play a survivor I feel that most of the killers I meet play without a mind, most killers just feels empty to go up against. I rarely meet killers that seems to have a plan going on, other than the huge amount of tunnellers and campers, there are a lot of those. (If that can even be called a plan. I just see it as a ######### low skill way to play the game. Lol.)

But yeah, are there any other killers our there with a "codex"? Or is it just me?

Having standards for yourself is fine, though I would avoid trying to enforce it onto other people.

I understand 80% of the player base mostly play survivor

Also there are those that do not wish to play or meme around

I wish to have fun experience and expect a level fair playing field... shouldn't be too much to ask after these years.

Watched the Otz video and hearing about obvious solo vs swf balance issues, simple things like knowing each others load out made me realise they know what people want, in my opinion they just don't agree/know or care.

    1. The playerbase isnt 80% Survivor, a lot of people play both sides. If it was an exact 80% to 20% ratio, then we wouldnt have things like queue incentives in the game to begin with.
    2. Ive mostly played Killer for the event, I know some people dont want to meme around but lighten up a bit the event does not change anything about the normal gameplay flow. Snowballs are merely cosmetic and Snowmen accomplish the same thing as a Locker.
  • @Unimatrix00 said:

How do you earn points? They didn't disclose in the winter events how you earn points.

Bloodpoints can be earned by hitting another player with a Snowball (as long as they are healthy or injured, but not in the dying state or on the hook) or getting a high-five with another player in a Snowman.

Event Tokens can be used to purchase Event Items, they are obtained via Tome Challenges for the Event.

  • People get upset over snowballs being thrown at them?

I cant take it seriously honestly, half of my matches just end up in a massive snowball fight because it's just way too goofy for me to handle any other way.

  • @Hexling said:

Can the killer even pick up snowballs? like 20 games the killer just sweats and for the most part slugs while we all just throw snowballs around lol.

There are piles of snow you can interact with. As for both sides, interacting with them gives you 6 snowballs.

You get Bloodpoints for hitting a Survivor with a snowball as long as they are healthy or injured, does not apply if they are in the dying state or on the hook.

Though I personally just love to throw snowballs at the Survivor who I just hooked, it might be BM but it's really goofy and I cant get mad at it.

  • Competitive Players do not ruin everything, everyone has their own idea of balance (or lack there of) and just because you dont agree with them does not inherently mean they are ruining the game.

Likewise, it also applies to both sides, not just Killer or Survivor.

Have you ever think of Swf can simply down in the middle of open space on purpose and teammate has Background player?

That wasnt part of the argument.

The argument was FTP on its own or Flashlights on their own.

  • @C3Tooth said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3608729#Comment_3608729

Well, if you prefer flashlight save that being stunned with 1 being injured and 1 being healthy ; than "flashlight save" that leave 2 survivors injured after success without the stunning. Okay.

You have to think about avoidability. It is much easier to use FTP than it is to make a Flashlight save in that regard.

If I were going against Flashlights, I can look away, I can stare at a wall, I can equip perks to counter it, I can bait the Survivors out for a free hit, and even with all of that, they can still mistime the Flashlight save, they might not even make it in time or have an angle based on their positioning.

With FTP, especially in a SWF or with Empathy, you can easily coordinate when and where to provide a Survivor a health state. If you want to make things even more simple, you can just instantly use it after unhooking to prevent tunneling.

FTP is easier to use and yields better results in the right hands.

Flashlights are weak, overrated, and easily counterable.

Question is can a console player pull of a 180 flick like a pc player. If so then it should have stayed.

Instead of "PC is at an advantage, let's nerf it", I think it would be better to look at it from "how can we make Console just as good as PC if there were to be an advantage".

Console really has the shorter end of the stick, but instead of nerfing things because of how they work on PC, it would be better to make Console able to pull off the same things as PC.

Best example I can think about is Fortnite introducing new settings specifically for Controller to help bridge the gap between Keyboard/Mouse and Controller, providing vast amounts of customization and making both viable in competitive play.

It would be nice to have more dynamic sensitivity options, like being able to pick a Killer's power and change the sensitivity for certain actions (keep a Basic Attack's sense different from a Special Attack's sense or Alt Ability's sense), i.e. Oni's Bloody Fury or Demon Dash having a different sense from normal gameplay.

Before BU change, I have FTP as counter teammate tunneled build, and it works like once per a few match.

Unless that random teammate down at the other side of dropped pallet or window. The time to pick up teammate is not enough before weapon cooldown, especially with STBFL, very situational that flashlight save would be far easier to do and not losing myself a health state.

Without BU. Would you like to play against a FTP, or a flashlight?

(to be true, success a FTP back then feel really good because it was rare, but it is too easy to pull of with BU now)

Id rather play against Flashlights over FTP.

Hands down the most overrated item in the game, completely countered by looking away or staring at a wall, better off bringing a toolbox to shave time off a Generator or a medkit for self-healing.

Risk of Rain Returns/2's OST (or just any music from Chris Christodoulou) is an absolute vibe.

Since I dont want to bog down the thread with a bunch of links and stuff I thought it would be more appropriate to just share my favorite of the bunch... I had a hard time picking between "...Con Lentitud Poderosa" and "Coalescence ~ 2023 Remaster" but just settled with "The Rain Formerly Known as Purple" since I felt like it was much more upbeat and less depressing.

Also all of the songs are leitmotifs of one another combined with leitmotifs from existing music, "The Rain Formerly Known As Purple" is obviously a leitmotif of "Purple Rain", but there are more subtle ones like "Once In A Lullaby" being a leitmotif of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" which is really interesting.

Anyways yea, Im done nerding out... go check out Chris Christodoulou's music.

You could make this argument about literally any other Killer, just because a Killer can be made 4.4 m/s does not mean they inherently should be.

I dont think it would be a good idea since making Blight 4.4 m/s would just give more of an excuse to make other Killers 4.4 m/s, and I really am not up to see Billy get put on the chopping block because "high mobility Killer = bad".

I just use Dead Hard and a Styptic Agent (+ Medkit), obviously it doesnt work every time but I find that I get a decent bit a value with it.

Id say the only downside is that it can be hard to see thing in Deep Wounds but that's not an issue with the perk, that's just an issue with Deep Wounds.
