You seem to have only read the first sentence, since you ignored most of my argument.

Shadowborn isn't overpowered, but large increases to base FOV substantially limits the effectiveness of a lot of survivor techniques. This lowers skill ceiling, reduces opportunities for creativity, and generally makes playing survivor less fun. This affects every decent player. FOV has huge balance and gameplay implications in DBD. There are no balance implications and usually no negative gameplay impacts from adding an FOV slider to a singleplayer or symmetrical multiplayer game. DBD is asymmetrical and only one side has a first person perspective. Everything was designed with this FOV in mind, from pallet breaking animations to Nurse's fatigue. Boosting FOV is not a simple QoL change in this game.

This point is also very, very wrong. I mentioned this in the original post, but the low FOV also hinders killers because they aren’t able to see the random clutter scattered throughout the map for no reason without looking down, which can get them stuck and lose them chases.

A perk not being OP is weak justification for making it base kit. Think about it this way: You're arguing that all players, including players without motion sickness, should essentially get a 5th non-meta perk in order to help a small minority of players who would otherwise have to make their normal 4th perk slot that same non-meta perk.

Giving everyone that 5th perk for free lowers the skill ceiling for survivor by weakening or outright killing a number of spins, techs, and other maneuvers. It also tilts game balance back towards killer, which can at least be compensated for if necessary, but which would divert attention from other more important changes and which I also don't feel is needed from the data I've seen.

Meanwhile, requiring a small minority of players to run a non-meta 4th perk doesn't many implications at all. It's just a bit harder for those players to be creative with their builds. Normal game balance and survivor skill ceiling are untouched.

People might not be asking for an advantage when asking for an FOV slider, but it's simply not possible to increase FOV without negatively impacting gameplay and shifting balance in DBD.

Also, to come back to this, considering SWFs get basically every single aura reading perk for free just by being on comms, I’m not sure what your argument is here? Not saying “SWF OP!!!!” but this is a weak point.

Most FOV sliders do not destroy the aspect ratio. If the sliders only impacted horizontal FOV, increasing FOV would cause everything to appear artificially tall and skinny and I cannot think of a single game for which that is the case. Increased horizontal FOV will also increase vertical FOV.

You're assuming a window tech where the survivor is crouching next to the window waiting to revault. Hitting S is not enough to check the window tech where you basically clip through the killer as they vault and run through them to the other side. This tech works consistently against Legions but you can do it against anyone.

Shadowborn is not a trash perk on Nurse. In addition to helping with quickly locating a survivor after a blink, it allows you to still catch survivors' feet while on fatigue. This is sometimes useless, but also sometimes a huge deal, such as when you're trying to locate a survivor in the corn. Not meta =/= not trash.

Again, this applies to all matches in which survivors have a clue what they're doing. It doesn't matter one bit if it's a tournament match or not.

Shadowborn is definitely a trash perk and is not that helpful if you’re a good Nurse or killer in general. just follow the scratch marks.

    That is the intended design.

Survivors have better awareness provided by 3rd person view and more restricted movement, having to control momentum.

Killers have restricted FOV in 1st person while keeping better movement deploying full speed no matter the direction.

Don’t think you got the point of the topic.

Shadowborn base kit still wouldn’t kill jukes. It’d make the current way they’re pulled off harder, sure, but if it became base kit, players would just need to adjust their positioning in order to have a better chance to pull it off.

Meanwhile, requiring people to use a bandaid makes the game less enjoyable and gives less options for the poor FOV that can be fixed. Again, if survivors need to rely on the FOV of killers being bad, they’re probably doing something wrong.

If balance was 100% on a scale, changing killer FOV would make killers 1% more powerful. The difference between current killer FOV and Shadowborn is not as large of a change as you suggest.

The devs (and many players) seem to have a different opinion on the FoV in this game than you. you realize your point of view is not the one and only right one? Just because you think it doesn’t affect gameplay doesn’t mean that is the only true way of judging this.

they are addressing accessibility options. And they are known to be generally slow to introduce changes. Your attitude doesn’t make things faster. Be more reasonable. Chances are they are currently working on on some kind of solution anyways. Let your voice be heard, but don’t be so disrespectful in doing so.

The only reason colorblind settings are in the game right now is because players started having an attitude after Almo’s comments lol.

I’ve been talking about FOV in this game for like 2 years and still no change. I’m aware that the devs don’t read all my posts but there are a bunch of people who’ve commented on the matter with radio silence from the devs.

People absolutely do get motion sickness while playing CSGO. Default killer FOV is 87 degrees. FOV in CSGO at 4:3 is 90 degrees.

There's also a difference between bumping up the default FOV a few degrees and adding an FOV slider (which implies a higher maximum FOV).

There's also more to FOV than "does it give people motion sickness". It's directly tied to balance.

You keep saying it’s tied to balance and then not addressing how important it actually is. Yeah, killers can see a bit more stuff, but it’s still not that important.

FOV slider does not mean or imply that the FOV must exceed what Shadowborn is already and I don’t know where you got that idea.

  • @Alionis said:

The killer's small fov is a deliberate design decision, as they are supposed to have a sort-of tunnel vision. It's also a balancing choice, allowing survivors to hide in their peripheral vision without getting seen.

This is... not a good argument lol.

Tunnel vision for what exactly? The hORRor aEthStetIc?

Survivors have many options to hide from the killer that don’t involve hiding directly in their faces. If they need to resort to that then they probably made many mistakes.

  • @ChiTenshi said:

The fixed FOV is part of the balance for this asymmetrical game.

The fixed FOV is still trash and isn’t that important in terms of balance. Survivors still can loop the killer just as well with and without Shadowborn.

  • @ChiTenshi said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2177979#Comment_2177979

That's a different argument from what's being discussed here.

A bigger fixed FOV might be something to consider and they could tweak the Killer's accordingly for balance purposes.

A slider FOV is an instant no.

How is FOV slider and instant no? Just make current Shadowborn the max setting and current FOV the minimum.

  • @Mooks said:

I dont even think many people want it to stay the way it is for ever. It’s just a fact that this game was built with this fixed FOV in mind and it’s not easily changeable. Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be changed later on, but that it will take some work and time put into it.

Time and work = change Shadowborn and add to base game.

  • @[Deleted User] said:

”Killer FOV needs to be low or they would have too much information.”

Shadowborn exists and no one uses it unless they physically need to. Please don’t make the “Shadowborn OP” argument.

Shadowborn uses up a perk slot. If you could get Shadowborn for free just about every killer would use it. It's more than just a QoL feature because a wider FOV does give a distinct advantage while playing killer.

“Higher FOV eliminates survivor jukes like corner hiding, window techs, and spins.”

No, it doesn’t. It’ll be harder, but not impossible. Strats like these aren’t really essential to the gameplay anyways, and survivors still have many juking options.

I wouldn't say strats like these are essential, but they add lots of depth and variety to survivor gameplay. They are much more important to the game than killers having a wider FOV without using a perk for it and you unfortunately can't have both.

    ---

Have you tried other methods of mitigating your motion sickness while playing killer, like sitting farther away from the screen and turning down graphics settings?

Most games nowadays, even competitive ones, have FOV sliders, but FOV sliders in a symmetrical game do not give one side an advantage. Adding a FOV slider would have balance implications in DBD because it is asymmetrical and only has a first-person camera on one side.

Obviously it provides an advantage, however it’s not a huge game changing advantage. It’s only an advantage compared to now. If other games had awful FOVs and had perks that increased it, it’d be seen as a bandaid. It’s better than not having obviously, but low FOV does not have a huge stake in balance in DBD.

Are you really making the argument that non-important juke strats, which are still possible, are more important than accessibility? This is legit the exact argument that people had against colorblind settings.

I sit far enough away to be able to see vital info and I’m on console so no settings.

FOV is still not that important to DBD. Again, there’s a reason why Shadowborn is not used often and Monitor isn’t used for the FOV, because FOV is not largely important. Shadowborn basekit would be fine.

  • @Ivaldi said:

comments like this make me happy that the devs don’t read our feedback

You should ignore the Breakable Walls as Killer, breaking them is only bad for you. I also dont think that this Map is that bad for Killer, I am burning it for those "Break X Pallets/Gens/Walls"-Challenges, if I dont have a Hawkins-Offering.

IMO the safe Pallets exist because some Pallets are not useable, due to the Breakable Walls, because they result in Deadends, until the Gen is done or the wall is broken.

It certainly could do with some less safe Pallets AND the removal of all Breakable Walls (The Game is a very good example of a Map where Breakable Walls are absolute nonsense), but it is not like it is unplayable for Killer.

There are only two pallets on the map that have dead ends with the breakable walls up. The other 20 completely safe pallets are not okay at all.

Anyone that isn’t Huntress, Deathslinger, Nurse, Spirit, or Blight is going to struggle on this map against competent survivors.

    A few great ideas.

Blocking gens as an add on however probably wouldn't happen. I don't think they want base kits to have effect gen pressure, and it's essentially making his own perk Thrilling Tremors superfluous to him.

I also think Furtive Chases obsession swapping mechanic is a healthy anti-tunnel incentive, so while a buff would be great, I wouldn't lose that.

And again, you've made his own perk useless on him, as he can just shroud after a hook.

    Lol at teleporting between lockers.

Following in the footsteps of “teachables as add-ons” that a few killers already have. I think it’s a pretty cool idea that has a powerful enough effect to be a purple while also allowing the killer to gain the effect of one of their perks. This also cements it as more of a “teachable” perk. The killer owns it and can use it in more versatile ways.

Meant to include the obsession part, totally agree. Just changing it from in chase to after hooking. Doesn’t make it entirely useless, as 20 seconds is just enough to account for Night Shroud’s proposed downtime. Also, you can use this in tandem tactically, getting close to survivors while Furtive Chase is working, then just hitting them if injured, or transitioning to Night Shroud if they must be exposed or FC’s duration will end soon.

Also yeah, probably wouldn’t be necessary with the proposed changes, why I left it at the bottom, but it’s a cool idea.

Huntress got a brand new set of add-ons this patch, most of them are nice, except the Ultra Rare add-ons.

    Soldier's Puttee

For an Ultra Rare add-on moving 5% faster when out of hatchets is pretty bad, my suggestion is to give this effect to a Common add-on like Amanita Toxin or Coarse Stone, and change this add-on completely, for example:

    • Caps the maximum amount of carried hatchets to 3.
    • Succesfully hitting a Survivor with a hatchet refunds it.

Or maybe this add-on could be the first ever add-on that changes her Lullaby range:

    • Decreases the humming radius by 9 meters. (So a 36 meter Lullaby radius)

    Iridescent Head

The new Iri Head was changed in the laziest way possible, I was hoping for something like Peanits suggessted a while back, make them insta-down Survivors when they are further away, for example:

    • Hatchets insta down Survivors when they are further than 24 meters away from you.

    What do you think?

    Iridescent Head, yes.

Soldier's Puttee, yes for idea one, for idea two, maybe fully remove the Lullaby and allow her to only carry 2 or 3 Hatchets?

I wish they did what Ubisoft did with R6, have a separate PTB, that is closed all the time unless a lot of new stuff is coming. You just update it when it comes out, and as a separate game you can jump between the games without having to switch on and off between PTB and Live.

More importantly, the devs don't take advice from PTB feedback, they barely take advice period. The only times they listen is when there is an overwhelming amount of negative criticism that is too great to ignore. As it stands only one dev plays the game and I'm lead to believe he is...not very good and only really plays survivor which well...if you wanna know why the game is survivor sided and geared towards rank 20s, that's...that's pretty much the reasoning.

The only time I saw an exception to the devs playing the game was during an event and from what I gather they weren't the big deciding bois, which I imagine means jack at the office.

IMO it kind of confirms that they mainly made that announcement to capitalize on pride month.

As a gay man I'm disappointed in Bhvr.

All chapters are made in advance, as they've stated multiple times. It'd be odd to assume they'd just immediately change content and concepts from previously fleshed out chapters just to make someone gay. It WILL be in a chapter in the future, just be patient.

  • Yeah I was so embarrassed that I typed the two dashes at the end right before and just closed the site lol.

  • How do you forget Jill, literally the first character you play as--

    Edit: Can't read.

If the majority of the community is continuously shutting down these topics shouldn't that be a hint that no one wants it?

No, because it's actually not the majority of the community. Just a very obnoxiously loud and ignorant section of the forums who says "fNaf Is 4 kIDs" 24/7 and ignore the numerous counts of murder and psychological trauma in the games, only actually hating it because a good amount of younger kids are into the general gameplay and story.

Just go away, you're adding nothing of importance to the discussion.

  • His Terror Radius is obnoxiously small, and Monitor & Abuse makes it so that he is by default a T2 Myers with a gun. In some instances, he can literally hit you from outside his Terror Radius. This isn't a problem on Huntress because her Hatchets are much slower and harder to aim by default, and she has an auxiliary Terror Radius that gives survivors a warning while also benefitting the Huntress by always signaling that she's nearby, forcing survivors to play more cautiously at times.

He can zone survivors for free by existing, which is boring as hell for both sides, as survivors are forced to lose distance in order to potentially not get hit, when every other killer except for Spirit (who is also rightfully hated) works in the exact opposite way.

70% of them (anecdotal) run the exact same build. Save, Sloppy, Monitor, NOED, Ruin, Whispers. At least three of these perks. Every. Single. Time. Yeah whatever, it's fine that there's a meta, but man is it boring that it's so often. I think the only Deathslingers I've gone against not using it are the ones trying their Adepts or people who are new to him.

  • Thx, so you're automatically wrong by trying to pass off anecdotal data as completely true.

Got the data for you, your argument is gone.

    About 10%.

Earlier this week, we asked you what statistics you would like to see. Since then, we have collected data on some of the most popular requests and designed some fancy graphics for them. There are a few things to note:

    • This data does not include the recent PTB.
    • Data involving rank was collected shortly before a rank reset (April 1st to April 7th).
    • These are very general statistics, so use caution before drawing any conclusions.

    Average Party Size

This is the overall average, between all ranks and platforms, of how many other Survivors players are queuing up with. More than half of the total Survivors are playing solo, while only 3-6% are playing in a full Survive With Friends group. This is based on the group size out of the total number of matches.

    Party Size Survival Rate

This is the average chance of Survival per Survivor depending on the size of the Survive With Friends group they are playing in. This is an average between all ranks on all platforms.

    Survival Rate by Rank

This graph shows the average rate of survival per Survivor at any given rank, per platform. Please note: The data collected is using your rank after the match, so players who depipped from rank 1 down to rank 2 would appear as rank 2 for our purposes. This is likely the reason why you'll notice a large gap between the survival rate of rank 1 and rank 2: Players who survived were more likely to pip and maintain their rank, while those who died were more likely to depip and lose their rank.

This data was also collected between April 1st and April 7th, after the pipping thresholds were originally changed but before they were later tweaked to be more forgiving for Survivors. Because of that, the statistics at this rank are from a small sample size consisting solely of the best players that could maintain rank 1 with the strict pipping conditions.

    Average Game Length

This graph shows the average game length at any given rank for each platform. This is the time from the start of the match until the final Survivor either escapes or is sacrificed.

    Most Popular Killer by Rank

This chart shows which Killer is the most popular depending on rank, per platform. For example, on PC from rank 1-4, nurse is the most popular Killer, while Hillbilly tends to be more popular from rank 5-12. The highest overall usage for any Killer at a given rank is the Nurse at rank 1, coming in at 22.39%.

    Highest and Lowest Kill Rates

This chart shows the deadliest (yellow) and least deadly (red) Killers per platform. These stats are an average for all ranks. Since there are four Survivors, a 50% kill rate equates to two Survivors escaping and two Survivors dying.

    Most Used Perks (Survivor)

This chart shows the most popular Survivor perks based on rank ranges between all platforms. We decided not to display ranks 13-20 as they tend to be more random (newer, lower ranked players tend to use whichever perks they have rather than picking what they want specifically). The numbers displayed are the percentage that perk is used of all perks used at that rank.

    Most Used Perks (Killer)

This chart shows the most popular Killer perks based on rank ranges between all platforms. Like the Survivor perks above, we decided not to show ranks 13-20. The number displayed are a percentage of the total perks used at that rank range.

Is there something that confuses you? Maybe you'd like to know a more precise number on one of these stats? I'll be doing a live Q&A in the official Dead by Daylight Discord server tomorrow at 2PM EST.

If you are not in the Official Discord server, you can join here: https://discord.gg/549m9NT

The Q&A will take place in the #game-discussion channel.
