  • They removed the moon offerings ages ago so they could have more control over the lighting, preferring the darkness of the game at that time. Daylight maps kinda squashed that idea though.

The fog was greatly reduced (a long with grass and much else) for game performance reasons, and today's offerings are shadows of their former selves, pun intended.

As for weather effects and the like, again game performance concerns. Prolly would melt a Switch and it would slide onto the floor. But they did bring that up in one of the recent surveys so ...

saying majority of players are on console without any proof is wild

Globally the vast majority of the playerbase is on the consoles. The PlayStations are the largest portion, and they outnumber thosw on Steam for example. For exact figures we cannot know due to the various UEA's among the consoles. Steam numbers are easily found.

So, Ihave something to say about this. I'll start with my story of getting to know ONI

I came to the game in the spring of 2017, and until 2020 I was the main Billy, as you know, in 2020 he was reworked. And I discovered a new character for me, it was ONI, I started playing him and studying his mechanics a lot.

Then one day I was banned (for no reason) and I left the game for more than half a year.

But what made me come back and forgive such an unfair act?

Right! It was the same character called "ONI"

I realized for myself that I was ready to play this game only because of him and he was the only thing that kept me here and made me endure the whole nightmare that was happening in the game all these years, every time another patch came out, simplifying the game on the survivors side, I said to myself: "the main thing is that this game has my favorite character...." I loved him so much that even when Billy was made strong again and even stronger than before, I was no longer interested in him.

From 2020 to this day, I call myself "Oni main" because I have played a huge number of hours on this character and the potential of this killer is fully revealed in my hands.

Now I will try to explain why removing 180° from ONI is a bad idea.

ONI is one of the most difficult characters in the game to learn, and appearance of "180° " made this killer more difficult. But this difficulty was justified, because if you spend enough amount of time on mastering it, this character becomes so strong in your hands.

BUT, this "180° " mechanic has never been unbalanced, of course, it gave its value, but it did not make the killer something extremely strong. In other words, this mechanic doesn't make killer too opprasive and unbalanced for rework, as it is too difficult for learning, so small amount of players can use it and that's why it doesn't affect on game balance. To this day, he cannot compete in strength with characters like blight, Nurse or Billy. I also see in advance that it will be impossible to defeat strong survivors using only "90° " And we can also compare ONI with such characters as The Good Guy or The Spirit.

The ONI player must accumulate his ability himself and use it wisely, accordingly it (ability) must initially be stronger than that of The Good Guy or The Spirit. After all, on these characters the player will use its ability most of the game and if he unsuccessfully uses it, he practically does not lose anything, because a small amount of time will pass before he can press m2 and use it again until he succeeds in doing what he wants. But this cannot be said about ONI, although his ability lasts longer, but player can also use it in a wrong way due to his inexperience or mistake, and if the use of ONI’S ability does not lead to the fact that at least one survivor has been downed, then the ONI player will most likely lose the match.

So if ONI worked like The Spirit, 90° would be enough for him, but he works completely differently, so 180° is an integral part of him, without which he will not be able to compete with the survivors above average level.

Good survivors already know how to play against "180° " and if you remove what they have learned to resist, defeating ONI will not cause them any problems.

As far as I understand, this was done to "equalize" players with a controller and a computer. But why remove this mechanic when you can give it to both sides.

I think it's wrong when developers first add it and then remove it with no reason, despite the fact that players have studied it for tens, hundreds and thousands of hours and it turns out as if they were wasting their time on it.

I decided for myself that if this update reaches the main servers, then I will leave this game once and for all and it is at this point that my long (almost 8 years) stay here will end.

And what do you think about this?

Apparently it is not possible to do it with a controller, much like flicks in general.

I highly doubt it was impossible to let console turn camera more for it. This was just easier, but doesn't change the fact it sucks for Oni mains and doesn't improve anything.

I am looking forward next survivor complaining there are too many Blights.

The issues with using a controller are dead zones in the sticks and some input delay.

The sticks have a momentum-like effect, where you swing the sticks and have to hold it for a second to get to full speed. This is why camera movement and moving in general cannot be snappy & responsive compared to using a mouse. Most games offer acceleration options to mitigate this but DBD does not.

The input delay is about half a second or so, and affects everything you do. For example, imagine playing as Hag. Those using a mouse would rebind the attack to the scroll wheel to insta-swing as you teleport. With a controller you can mash all you want but never insta-swing when you teleport, and the surv gains distance. I don't think there's anything they can do about that delay at all, it'll never match the quickness of pressing a keyboard.

All this is without taking into consideration fps or game performance in general on the consoles either. I encourage our PC cousins to borrow a friend's PS4 or whatever, pick up a controller, play as killer and find out for themselves.

This is all before getting into any type of talk about how/when glitches (and even outright exploits) become intentional mechanics

Funny how Knight's exploit used by survivors become a feature.

To increase skill expression, they simply needed to increase console sensitivity, I think they did it with Billy rework. (at least what I heard from console player)

Oni was simply reverse Billy, he could change direction a lot after the dash instead at start, not like it was game breaking or whithout counterplay…

    RIP Oni

Before McLean left the company he made Blight playable on console, but they also doubled the sensitivity with a controller and stated that was the furthest they could go.

well, the change is intended, time to say farewell to dbd and move onto another game because there is no point in investing so many hours into one tricking such a cool and fun killer just for him to be treated this way because skill expression is not allowed :D

Disturbed Ward is very Survivor sided, the map is huge, the main building is very broken with 2 god pallets and has a bizarre loop layout with the shack connected to a jungle gym.

Anytime there's a decent jungle gym slapped right next to the shack it's a time-consuming problem, and not just for that map.

Didn't say that they did. They could have left for many reasons, but where does the line go for reporting for "throwing"?

With the more interesting changes I've seen in stuff like 2v8 (with 3 dash wesker at least) itd be interesting if we got a balance modifier to test minor changes and actually got everyone's feedback instead of locking it to a PTB. I think overwatch had this prior to OW2. And seems like simple number changes can be done in a modifier. We have the beta tab for testing other stuff to which I think the FoV slider is still stuck in. So it'd be interesting to see BHVR test a few balance changes in a modifier to get all sides feedback instead of locking that behind a PTB. Do we think that is possible and would people play it if it was? Also with them saying characters will be free when trying modifiers its kinda like the ptb where you can try freddy being buffed while not owning him (correct me if I'm wrong). Would people like this as a modifier?

I'd love an experimental area for DBD, mainly so console can also test things out. Both DayZ and Minecraft have experimental versions so it's possible.

That's essentially the same story for Warframe. Started off on PC, then got released on consoles, and even on IPhone. They ALSO did cross play and cross platform progression, but like I said...have no problem doing hotfixes. Sometimes they'll have multiple hotfixes in 1 day.

Gather around the campfire folks it's story time:

I think several things work against problems getting patched out quicker than anyone would like, prolly the devs themselves as well.

The biggest culprit is easily DBD's famous unwieldy code. Underneath everything is the 2016 Blueprints, seasoned with C++ sauce over the years. Despite even an engine upgrade things break easily (often unrelated directly to changes), are hard to recreate due to no recording on their end, and persist.

Most developers of any size when porting their game to the consoles hire out expert services to optimize their code. DBD chose to do this in-house. This tells me they alone are the only ones who actually kinda maybe can sift through their code and understand how it all connects together. A lil. The best example of all this would be back in May 2019 announcing their goal of getting all platforms to 60fps minimum. After like a year and a half and the absolute biggest thread this forum has ever seen, they fessed up that they just couldn't do it. Not because machines like the PS4 or Xbox1 were not capable of it, but because of an unsurmountable resource bottlenecking problem within the code. It also shows in even stronger PCs using an inordinate amount of processing to run this game. It's also why it's practically impossible to add in a replay system to ease with reporting, it's taken 8 years to add M&K support, etc.

The other major factor imo for so many issues is the relatively small size of their team in 2017-18. I think this led to imperfect knowledge of how to port their game smoothly, in particular things like cross play, cross progression, the process of putting out patches, and so many others. Not having all that in place back then has reared it's ugly head repeatedly over the years. I consider it how they went through their growing pains really, combined with some lack of foresight that they have to be dinged for.

  • @LordGlint said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3891043#Comment_3891043

Why would this be completely different for other games on the same platforms?

I haven't a clue. As far as I know it's just like this for DBD.

In 2016 during the first year of the game's existence it was just on Steam only. The following year they ported it over to the consoles, then Windows I think, and much later on came Stadia and Epic.

Back then their updates would come out around roughly the same time for all the platforms, but separately and at times days apart. Then they streamlined their patches and released them across all platforms all at the same exact time. It must be better for them internally to do it that way.

    4. If you are not doing Gens makes sure that you are being a distraction for those players doing Gens. Make vault noise far away from incomplete Generators so the killer can waste time looking for you.
    5. If you are a guide, start different generators so the other visually blind survivors can at least hear the gens and go to complete it.

The headphones thing is more widespread than you'd think.

Players sitting on a crusty couch across from an ancient TV and using that TV's speakers is not unusual. Contrast that with the more serious gamers hunched 4 inches from a very nice monitor with their tourny mouse cranked up to 21000 sporting a $240 headset that can hear aliens farting on Mars. Not for hotfixes. I know warframe updates are generally followed by like 10 hotfixes spread through the following week. There's a difference between fixing bugs and adding/changing content.

The way it works for the consoles for DBD is that each any every patch (no matter the size) has to be separately certified be Microsoft and Nintendo and Sony. This can take up to a week, and is not free either. If is was only Steam they could put out a hot fix a day of they wished to, but it's not and they have for years put out all platforms at the same time.

That's why they plan out their updates pretty far in advance, and cram everything they can into them. Those of us who have been here long enough remember Trickster's chapter being delayed a week or so solely because one of the console makers hadn't certifies it yet.

In this post I will not discuss aspects that would affect the quality of gameplay, game balancing, abilities, perks, or items since these topics are sensitive and very difficult and often provoke many reactions. Instead, I will present a few feature ideas that I personally needed at one point and find very useful. Some of them are original, others I've seen in other popular games or read about on social media. Before I begin I want to let you know that these are just personal opinions and should be treated as such. If you have any ideas for these features or have any additions/changes to what I've mentioned, I'd love to see your ideas and opinions below.

Logs of previous matches and their statistics:
It would be great to see a breakdown of your performance in each match, including the perks used by you and others, how many points you earned in different categories, how many seconds you survived in chases, how many seconds you spent on objectives and more. I believe this option could help improve specific aspects of your gameplay by allowing you to analyze what went wrong and work on those areas. It would also provide useful statistics for personal growth.

Save the previous match as a video:
It would be interesting if the game offered the option to save your most recent match, but with a time limit to do so. This could be especially useful for content creators or players who want to capture specific moments. It would also help players who don't have the capability to record matches but want to save their gameplay for later review or sharing.

    Ranking system:
Currently, the Grade System doesn’t truly measure player skill. It reflects the time spent in the game. Since the game has a competitive aspect I believe a more complex ranking system would be a better fit one that accurately reflects how well you play. It should be more challenging to reach the top ranks. Additionally, there should be a way to lose your rank or progress, not just due to losing a match or performing poorly, but also due to inactivity since it’s reasonable to assume that skill level may decline after a long break from playing. It would be recommended for the ranking system to be of higher quality and more complex than the one we had before the Grade System.

Add a bot killer in custom games:
This feature would be perfect for players who want to practice as survivors, do experiment with different or learn specific loops. Custom games with a bot killer would allow you to adjust the match's difficulty level.

View your mission during the match:
Sometimes you might forget what mission you have or just want to check its progress. One idea would be that when you're in a match and press 'esc', besides offerings and perks, you could also see the mission you've selected along with its progress.

    Removing the end-game chat:
I think we all agree that sometimes the community can be quite toxic, and in my opinion, the highest level of toxicity is found in the end-game chat. I believe this chat is unnecessary and should be removed especially since console users can't use it anyway. I think this would help reduce the toxicity in this game.

The possibility to reconnect back into a match:
In case of a connection issue or if you need to leave for a short period of time and disconnect from the match, your character will be replaced by a bot, as usual. However, you will have the option to return to the match and take the bot's place. You will have time to reconnect until the end of the match, otherwise you will receive a penalty.

    Customizing lobby backgrounds:
A feature that allows you to choose the lobby background you want, whenever you want. You will be able to choose between official backgrounds from events or the launch of certain chapters. A perfect option to create a pleasant atmosphere based on everyone's preferences.

So far these are my ideas. I would be happy to hear yours as well.

Not a bad list at all, good suggestions. As for a match replay system they've said many times it's pretty much impossible now it's too late. That is something that would have had to been originally coded in back in 2016.

  • Knockout is more consistent, Third Seal is slightly stronger but can be yeeted early.

  • Depends on the killer but I'd say Haddonfield is supremely killer sided, and Badham still surv sided. Saloon and Midwich can be killer sided as well.

But again which killer is being played and everyone's skill matters.

  • @BritneyMitch said:

The argument against this isnt even real. If people are lobby dodging because they see perks they dont like isnt that a good thing? Like that player recognized that they were about to get into a game with someone who is either playing for different reasons than them or a different skill level. I do not think dodging lobbies so more like minded people play together is a bad thing.

The issue is the damage to matchmaking that lobby dodging/shopping does, due to how the backfilling works.

  • Imagine if Off the Record also blocked the unhook notification. 🤔

  • @CountOfTheFog said:

They absolutely should should show loadouts in game, prolly in the pause menu where they show pings etc.

As for in the lobby I wish that always a thing from the very beginning. If it's added now, good luck doing adepts and tome challenges and such as the lobby dodging will at first soar, the. Most likely even out over time. But for example perks like No Mither will likely always cause dodging until that perk is updated.

I don't think bhvr is willing to change deathsligner's terror radius like you proposed because someone could add monitor and abuse which would give them an even smaller terror radius of 16m. bhvr would likely deem this too strong.

I clearly remember back in the day each and every Slinger ran Monitor & Abuse. All of them.

Didn't feel too good to be speared without hearing them or even hearing them, before they messed around with the lullaby and radius. And it was very obvious when you'd spear a surv who had no clue it was coming.

Giving him 115% when the gun's empty would help him when looping.

    Never happened. Ever.
The map is just not okay.
They need to either rework it, since like you said, they promised it, or they need to killswitch the realm.

I love the Swamp maps, always have and always seem to do far better than I should have in either role. I've done some ridiculously shameful things around that little boat, and win way more than I ever should have there.

I even remember when they were much much larger maps than they are now, which was super painful as killer for sure. But I still love them, and I know I'm in the minority for that.

This is an absolute fact. The reporting system of having to record your own matches and then upload the videos to your own YouTube and send a link is so burdensome. All because their support form is garbage and won’t let you upload more than a 1 MB screenshot without giving you a hard time. I get needing to have evidence of something, so even if we say having to record our own matches is valid, (I still think they should have in game recording on their end for us to use) the fact that their own support form is so horrible that people have to upload to their own YouTube channels because you simply cannot attach a video is beyond unacceptable.

They've said in the past that it's too late to add in a match replay system, that it's pretty much impossible now and it would have had to been coded in back in 2016.

And our precious Switch cousins had their ability to record removed many years back "for game performance reasons.". So I have no idea what they're supposed to even do to report.

  • @danielmaster87 said:

No! No more disabled DC penalties! It destroys the likelihood of no one DC'ing in solo queue. Isn't that what all the complaints are about?

I get that there's cheaters. Just report them, ask the devs to ban them, and that's all you can do. Nothing good has ever come of free DCs.

I agree we should not mess around with the DC penalties like that. Actually I think the third or fourth one should even be a heavier lock. But time and time again we have seen the evil things that happen every time those penalties have to be off for whatever reason.

Like most players I do wish their reporting system was much less a burden and so cumbersome. Few actually record their games in the first place. I bet many many more legit bans would be happening if reporting wasn't as difficult and annoying as it is.

  • Unless you're moving from a Switch I'd contact support about what should be there.

Also it was most likely those gremlins making off with them! 🤣

    From the in game store

I didn't know about the last part! It's worse than I thought

And that's why those queue times are so delightful when you turn CrossPlay off.

It would be a nice time to give console players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S the fps option for more than 60 frames per second as you can increase your frames on PC. I think this would be an amazing feature to have in a future update.

Would be nice yes, but I'm not holding my breath for it.

They couldn't get the last gen machines to a steady 60 not because of the capabilities of those consoles but the unwieldy nature of their coding. Despite time and even an engine upgrade I bet that's still what would hold them back here.

  • They wouldn't be reckless enough to provide a list like that for targeting would they? 🤔

it’s business as usual though this game has been held together by soggy pieces of paper and Dorito crumbs for almost a decade

I thought it was spit and baling wire & wishful thinking? 😂
