  • @GregTheEgg It was speculation that they would drop one near the DLC.

Peanits has stated since the Wiki originally listed Sept 5th a few weeks ago, that while they have one planned for the near future, they haven't announced a date yet and aren't ready to announce it yet.

So, we do know that one is planned for "soon," but BHVR hasn't announced anything about even a "general when," yet.

All Peanits stated was to keep watching their social media for when they do eventually make the announcement.

  • I haven't played against the new killer or new survivors yet, nor on the new map.

But otherwise, games have been normal for me.

Last night I did have one group (whether they were SWF or Solo, I don't know, and it didn't matter) use a Bloody Party Streamer. So, I worked on getting my four hooks for BBQ, did a lot of chases and hits, and kicked generators a lot. Once they figured out I was willing to let them do the gens and escape for the extra BP due to the offering, we had a fun time farming the points.

I did sacrifice one, and almost felt bad about it. For several minutes, I'd forgotten about the Offering.

Usually, I don't farm. But since I'm rank reset into the gray ranks for not playing for many months, I wanted them to get decent double BP. I figured to have the BPS, they were either folks who came back for the DLC, or Killer players playing the survivor side for a change.

  • I have to agree with @Aven_Fallen

While I understand the design concept behind it, especially with the emblem changes that happened the last rework which pretty much forces us to play "the Dev's way" instead of ways we might enjoy (for example, being quick on the kills as a Killer actually hurts your pipping, while being stealthy as a survivor hurts as well), it needs to change.

I get that the caps are so players then go and do other actions throughout the match, it really isn't fun the way they're handling it.

  • @Tucking_Friggered I went and played F13 for an hour. Came back and got right into DbD. Whatever happened earlier seems to have been fixed, at least for my ability to login.

  • @SteelDragon Negative, Ghostrider. That was the first thing I did. Then I also did a repair on EAC, just in case.

    No change.

  • @tortrader Hehe. Sometimes. I was just messing around on normal bots thinking: this will be easy as always. In the first five minutes the damned bots had a car already repaired and moving. Went and stopped that one, and not long thereafter the second car is going.

"?!!?" What the hell was up with those "normal" bots? I've not had human-played counselors get cars that fast. ๐Ÿคฃ

Checked DbD again. . . . nope, still can't connect after it launches. Checked the Steam forums, four-page thread so far about this exact issue.

Checked Steamcharts: only slightly over 18k playing right now. So not a server load issue.

My only remaining thought? Great job Behavior. Queue the Benny Hill theme.

  • @dreamsy10 Friday the 13th just played fine for me on steam, though. Just logged out after a Bots match.

  • @Lost_in_the_Fog Same. I played a match about an hour ago just fine. Got off to do something around the house, came back, and now get the same screen the OP showed.

  • @Peanits Do you happen to be around? I know it's late, but figured it's worth a shot.

  • Same problem here, as well. PC platform.

  • Yeah, I hadn't bought Ghostface and wasn't rushing to buy ST, but I think Behavior is trying on a lot of fronts, so decided I'm likely spending the $17 in total, now.

  • @AshleyWB Damn you. And here I came into the thread to tear you a new one on the economy of licensing. I don't like you very much anymore. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

  • I work on my due manuscripts during the day (starting in an hour) until the kid gets home from school. Then I spend some time with him, then get other things done. I don't play video games until around 10pm or so. If I even play any on a given night.

But I'm not a fan of Stranger Things, so there's no countdown hype for me for this DLC.

  • @FireHazard That was my point: less effort to gain more profit. Check your wall, what I wrote goes along with that line of thought.

  • @FireHazard Well, the latest 24 hour peak for Deathgarden is 159 players. To give a comparison, Friday the 13th on Steam peaked at 644 in the past 24 hours.

Even new modes aren't helping Deathgarden, I mean, why would Behavior try new modes over here, then, when churning out a paid DLC every three months, and soon a new paid Battlepass every 3 months in-between chapters, seems to be working for them.

Why pump real money back into the game for new game mode development and such, when they're probably working on their next success like Deathgarden was. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ

Ever hear of a "one hit wonder?"

  • Not really. I'm not a fan of Stranger Things, just as I wasn't a fan of Ghostface. I'll probably get those two DLCs at some point just to keep up with the collection, but I'm in no rush.

Same issue I have with the thought of Pennywise for Chapter 14. Not a fan, will likely skip it for a while.

Not knocking or trying to take away from the fans who want the DLC. But, you asked.

  • I'm not a fan of Stranger Things nor IT, so neither one for me.

But, I didn't buy Ghostface either for that same reason.

  • @Peanits The Rank Rework for later in the roadmap . . . does that include the separate ranks for each killer by chance?

  • @Mookywolf Same on my end. As I talked about earlier with my 32-year-old sister who gave the game a try last week, her first several matches she had zero perks slotted because she never went to the Loadout side menu. She just queued and played.

And by the way, her second match as a killer, which was her second match ever in the game, she netted 19k BP. With no perks slotted.

  • @Boss That is a piss-poor excuse on their part. Way to insult the intelligence of your customers.

I worked in table-top game design for over 12 years, and even the most casual rule set, like Fate or Savage Worlds, gave solid numbers and not just colorful descriptors.

Why? Because in gaming, the hard values are important when trying to figure out character builds and such. Vague descriptors mean jack. Save them for your prose writing. You don't use them in place of values in game design.

I'm often times wondering what level of Game Design education or experience this Dev team possessed prior to DbD.

  • @Pm_me_entity_lewds In any other game with Ranks, it would be. Here? Here is apparently not just the fog, it's the Twilight Zone.

Not only do players de-rank themselves, but then the monthly rank reset drops that false lower rank even lower. That's why there's general advice to never play DbD the first week after a rank reset if you're a legitimate low-ranked player. The experience is even worse than usual.

But, rank has zero to do with skill in this game, for a lot of reasons, the most obvious of which is all the purposeful deranking. And since rank is used for matchmaking, it means matchmaking is near useless in DbD in a lot of cases. Especially at green ranks and above.

  • @FireHazard Funny you mention a 2v8 mode. Deathgarden has introduced a 2v10 mode that they've been live testing on Sundays over there. I don't play the game, but I like to keep up on its info.

Their Devs say they also have a few other new game modes to test out in the coming months.

Deathgarden, a game averaging 230 peak players a day, has new game modes. Meanwhile, DbD, which peaks at near 30k daily players on PC, operates the opposite way: no new modes, but a regular flow of paid DLCs and soon: battlepass.

I'd actually buy and try Deathgarden, but their player count keeps going backwards at such a rate that I'm not sure it has much longer.

  • @FireHazard Trust me, I empathize. You and so many other Vets lament that DbD needs some new game modes, or any real changes, to spice things up again.

Meanwhile, many of us Overwatch vets suffered from the opposite. We had arcade modes added like Free-For-All death match and Mystery Heroes, the workshop for creating our own wide variety of custom games (the Overwatch Dead by Daylight modes are really fun), we get three new heroes with entirely new kits and three new maps per year at no additional cost.

We don't have to grind. The point of the game is learning Heroes, learning the heroes to counter specific other heroes, and simply improving. When to hero swap, who to swap to, et cetera.

Then came the latest change: RoleQ in early September, which forced a 2-2-2 team composition in every match with us having to queue as a specific role. And the wife and I hated it. No more could you swap roles with someone else in a match because they weren't doing so well at it, and you could step in, while maybe they assumed your role. Sometimes, whether I went Tank, Damage, or Support depended on the map. I was better at certain roles on certain maps. Well, that's out the window, because like in DbD, you don't know what map you have until after you queue-up and get into the match.

So, while DbD players need more changes and options, over in Overwatch the changes finally got to be too much and destroyed a lot of fun in the game. For many people.

    It's a dangerous, double-edged sword.

I really don't know yet where I'll end-up as far as what I play. I doubt my days with OW are truly over, so I'll probably hover between DbD, F13, and a little OW.

The main problem I have with DbD is ranking up. While it might get slower at the upper ends, right now it is far too easy to rank up for me. I've played survivor three times in my life, outside of tonight where I did two new survivor matches. I double pipped both matches and am almost at Rank 18 already.

    In two matches.

The problem I have is that I rank-up faster than I feel I'm learning the game, or can get enough bloodpoints to really unlock stuff. I get to Rank 15 as Killer, and matchmaker starts going wonky and I am facing a lot more decked-out Vets, and then I have to stop playing for a month or two and let rank reset hit. Why? Because I'm not ready to face them. My matches prove that to me. Yet, getting to Rank 15-12 and those de-reanked, decked-out Vets is so damned easy that it turns trying to learn game into more of a question of: Why do I have this installed again?

  • @FireHazard I honestly have nothing additional to add. You've managed to state my own point of view on the game exactly how I feel about it. And I don't have anywhere near 1k hours in the game. To be honest, unless some sort of new game modes . . . or something . . . are added, I'm probably just here, again, until I get my little fix playing my favorite horror icons. Then it's back to another game for months.

I like DbD, but this game is just way too repetitive. And having played MMOs as my primary game genre from 1999-2016 (with some ARPGs on the side), I'm long since over the whole grinding aspect to the degree that DbD does it. I did that for 17 years, starting with EQ1 when it launched.

As much as I want to like DbD more, and as often lately as I've considered that maybe it could become my new primary game since I don't like RoleQ in Overwatch, I manage to play about 3 or 4 matches on a given night, and then logout. And sometimes it's a few days before I login again. I look at it in my Steam library, hover over the play button, and then think about just doing gens as a survivor or what playing killer is, and it's a 50/50 shot if I actually launch the game.

I think they really do believe that DLC after DLC will be enough to grow the player base. I believe that's why we've had three licensed DLCs in a row: Ash, Ghostface, Stranger Things. The last time they did them in a row like that was Leatherface, Freddy, and SAW back in September 2017 through January 2018. And looking at Steamcharts for PC (since we can't get console numbers on the consumer side of things), it did grow their average player base by roughly 2k over that time.

Maybe their Steam numbers, combined with their console numbers, and very soon to be their Switch numbers, are enough for them. I certainly hope the console numbers vastly dwarf the PC numbers, though. Because according to articles out there, as of May 2019 DbD sold over 5 million copies. Well, unless consoles vastly outnumber PC by an extremely wide margin, their retention is not that great.

I'd say any match would teach new players. All it takes is effort, patience, and new Strategies from learning from past mistakes especially playing against Rank Reset Survivors. I believe when I joined I played against rank reset survivors, I failed miserably but i would always try and try to improve on what i failed.

@Micheal_Myers But you're assuming said new player comes to the forums, or the reddit, or checks the Wiki or guides or whatever, and even knows there was a rank reset.

My sister had no clue what happened to her games Friday evening versus Tuesday's through Thursday's experience, until I told her that Rank Reset just happened and how it works. Until that moment, she was completely lost on why her match quality went to hell on the express train in a mere 24 hours.

Well, she was already about to uninstall the game after that experience, and explaining the monthly rank reset solidified it. She works her ass off and doesn't have that kind of time to put into a game to get good enough that rank resets and de-ranking vets (never mind vets exploiting SWF with lower ranked friends) won't just make it a miserable experience. It would take many months of playing on what time she has, and chewing all that glass, before the game became enjoyable enough to stick with.

Once she learned all that, uninstalling was the only sane choice.

So, there's no guarantee that new player even knows about rank resets and what the hell just happened to them. All they might know is: "Well, this game isn't fun. What other games are out there?"

As @NoShinyPony pointed out: that poor Killer was screwed from the lobby screen, because no matter what they did, they had absolutely no chance against you four rank reset SWF vets. None whatsoever.

And that is a major, major flaw with this game.

  • @FireHazard You actually hit it right on the nose. After she uninstalled and called me, and the two of us discussed DbD more, she pretty much said a lot of the same thing. The piss-poor rank reset experience aside, the game is highly repetitive.

Now, she can handle repetitive games. She used to play older MMOs like City of Heroes where, despite the coat of different missions and stories, it was basically the same treadmill of repeating the same few mission types over and over. She played Friday the 13th for nearly a year back in 2017-2018. But at least there, she said, she had different ways to go about escaping or avoiding Jason (she hated playing Jason, always liked to try to escape from him). She already realized that in DbD, it would be the same: crouch and do generators, or run around objects until you got knocked down or the killer got bored and left to go elsewhere.

Or for killer it would be the same: run from generator to generator, or chase people around objects until you hit them.

I mean, yeah, it simplifies the whole "mind-gaming" that DbD talks about, but at its core she's right.

Hell, as I've said, I played Overwatch for 3+ years. That game is repetitive as well when you really look at it. Yet, DbD seems to double-down on the repetition concept.

  • @Micheal_Myers But the post doesn't accomplish that because it honestly comes off as a laugh against a new player who doesn't know any better.

What might have been useful was in after game chat, giving the new player a few polite pointers on why camping isn't the best strategy. That's how one would go about teaching a new, random player. Step by step.

  • @Micheal_Myers Actually, many developers and game studios have discussed that a majority of players don't visit a game's forums. Hell, anecdotal on that topic, but of the 18-20 of us in real life who all game, I am the only one who ever visits a game's forums. And the group's ages range from 15 all the way to 46.

In reality, new players don't often join the forums. Hell, just as many don't ever watch video guides or read guides for a game. They just login, play, logout. And if they found the game fun, return. If they didn't find it fun, they likely don't return. Just look at how quickly numbers drop back to the normal, flat ranges after a free weekend or a 50% off sale. New players are not being retained.

I got a free copy of DbD from a Streamer last year and gave it to my 32-year-old sister. She works two jobs and finally had time to install it and play this past week. Being a huge Stranger Things fan, the advertisement for the DLC reminded her about owning DbD.

She started on Tuesday night. Enjoyed it well enough. Then rank reset happened on Friday. By last night (Saturday), she was so disgusted with DbD as a new player that she uninstalled the game and said to hell with the DLC. She isn't ever coming back.

She played both some Survivor and Killer. Didn't camp, but tried to chase people. And got looped to hell from de-ranked survivors with a lot more experience.

I would bet money that her reaction is going to be more typical of new players getting thrown to the wolves by de-ranked vets thanks to the reset a mere four days before this DLC launches, than them learning and sticking around.

  • @LordGlint I loved Freddy vs Jason. Saw it in the theaters several times. Forgot the scuba tank part. Time to pull out the DvD and watch it again. I hate forgetting scenes like that.

And by the way: Holy broken train tracks, Batman! Did we derail a thread. But I'm off for the night. Want to play either this or F13 a little before bed, and it's 11pm here.

  • @FireHazard @LordGlint Hmmm, which Jason would you add? The basically human one that gets his ass kicked for two films and then killed in Part 4, or the resurrected one from Part 6 onward that is pretty much an unstoppable killing machine?

Or just say to hell with it and add Roy from Part 5. ๐Ÿคฃ

Just avoid the Freddy vs Jason version. He got engulfed in flames and didn't stagger a step. I can't imagine mere pallets stunning that Jason.

  • @FireHazard Oh no, I wouldn't add that form of Jason to DbD. That Jason worked within that game's design. Much larger maps, many more Counselors per maps, indoors and outdoors, various Counselor objectives all spread out (car parts, boat parts, phone repair to call the cops, or even unmasking and killing Jason), managing fear to counter his Sense power, and even hiding in wardrobes and under beds. Plus Counselors could fight back somewhat.

But after playing that game (and I still do) Behavior would have a tall order with me adding him to DbD and making him feel like Jason here.

Granted, I think they did a hell of a job with Myers, but Myers also didn't have a unique game based on his films first, either. So, no other point of reference for that "feel."

  • Looping as survivor.

  • @FireHazard @LordGlint Sweet Christmas, but Friday the 13th: The Game handled Jason damned near perfectly for what he does in the films.

Then again, I enjoy Counselor over there a hell of a lot more than Survivor over here. I wish someone would come along with a new game similar to a lot of that game's core designs. I'd be all over it.

  • @FireHazard I think his movement speed should be increased once the chainsaw charges. Nothing as crazy as Hillbilly, mind you. But maybe to 120% or something.

Now, I admit, my understanding of numbers in DbD leaves much to be desired. Numbers here are odd to me, unlike in games like Overwatch where I can easily calculate what a 20% increase to Soldier 76's damage nets, or even what reducing his clip by a few bullets nets overall. Even in body-shots vs headshots. So, that 120% percent I mentioned might be crazy or useless. But you get my drift.

Right now, his slow is what kills me with him. I have to be practically piggy-backing on the survivor and let them carry for it to feel like the chainsaw is worth using.

Which is probably where I need to get more involved with his add-ons. Still learning the game, so I'm trying to learn various killers before relying on their add-ons.

@GrootDude I appreciate you making me feel old (just kidding). ๐Ÿ˜‚ I have three kids older than you. My kids are 26, 21, 19, and 9.

I like all those series a lot except for Scream. I could just never get into Scream.

Myers I loved right up until the Curse of Michael Myers. I was glad that H20 ignored everything after Halloween II, until its sequel, Resurrection, screwed that up. So far, love the 2018 continuity reboot that only acknowledges the original Halloween. Especially since John Carpenter never wanted to make Laurie his sister, but did it because he was rushed on the script and the studio rejected earlier drafts for not having enough of a twist. So I'm glad he finally got to undo that. Just hoping they don't screw it up, yet again, with Halloween Kills in 2020 and Halloween Ends in 2021.

As it stands, Myers now has three continuities: Halloween through Curse of Michael Myers; Halloween, Halloween 2, H20, and Resurrection; then Halloween, Halloween 2018, and the two upcoming sequels. He's has as many continuities as Highlander at this point.

Liked all the Friday the 13th films except Part 9 and Jason X.

I really enjoyed the 2009 remake.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre . . . I liked the first film. The sequels went too much into the black-humor campiness for me. Texas Chainsaw: Next Generation should be forgotten.

I did like the 2003 remake and The Beginning prequel, though. One of the rare instances I actually enjoyed the remakes more than most of the originals.

Love all the Nightmare on Elm Streets, including Freddy vs Jason. A New Nightmare was the only questionable one for me. The remake can be thrown into a landfill somewhere along with the infamous E.T. game from the Atari 2600.

    @LordGlint Nice photo. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • @FireHazard Oh, I'm aware that Hillbilly came first. He was one of the three originals killers next to Trapper and Wraith. I followed the game since 2016, I just didn't buy it or play it because Overwatch occupied my time where all my friends and family played.

I'm almost 47, so grew-up on Leatherface, Myers, Freddy, Jason, et cetera. Always been a huge slasher fan.

But with Leatherface in the game now, I always get a mental image of Hillbilly being from some Grade B Texas Chainsaw knockoff movie.

It's not a knock on who entered DbD first, just how my horror fandom works out mentally on picking who to play.

    Naturally, I gravitated to Bubba.

Now, gameplay wise, I hate the speed Billy gets with the chainsaw. I suck at controlling it, and just don't feel motivated to learn him. Leatherface just fits my playstyle more. I just wish he got some needed tweaks.

  • @FireHazard As someone who likes Leatherface a lot more than Hillbilly (I can't mentally get past that Billy is just a knock-off of poor Bubba), I agree with you.

I like playing Leatherface. But good gods man, he needs some love.

  • @LordGlint Yep. And that is the absolute major factor in my decision to remain in the gray and yellow ranks. I have multiple killers I want to learn, and ranking up will make that more frustrating than its worth. I can't play regularly as it is, so don't have the same time available as people with 1k or more hours. Hell, in 3+ years of Overwatch I've only clocked a bit over 600 hours. And that was my primary game since May 2016.

I desperately want separate Ranks for killers. Until then, climbing ranks works against me.

  • @FireHazard @GrootDude Well, to be fair, Leatherface gets screwed over and dumped on in the movies, too.

At least Behavior was true to the source material. ๐Ÿ˜‚

  • @Cardgrey Ah. Yes, I agree with that whole-heartedly.

  • @LordGlint Well, there is some sort of Rank adjustment happening later in the roadmap. I, too, hope they make Rank be actual Rank. Make it hard to rank-up, and drop the damned resets. Do placements each Season.

I also hope whatever is on the roadmap includes the separate ranks for each Killer. Because I've no interest in ranking up and then trying to learn a different killer against some of those survivors.

The only thing RoleQ did right in Overwatch was separate SR for each role, now.

  • @GrootDude Crap! Ignore my previous reply. I'm multitasking and got my wires crossed.

It isn't wiggling that I have an issue with the button tapping on, it's the damned Struggling mechanic on the hook.

That crap needs to be changed to a simple hold-a-button, or hold and skill checks.

  • @Cardgrey I'm not following your statement there . . .

  • @Cardgrey No.

But that has zero to do with a subscription model being an absolute death knell for a game like this.

  • @LordGlint Exactly! The dedicated fans will eventually get bored and moved on. And without retaining new players, that becomes an issue. Especially for a game they want to keep in full development for at least another 5 years.

Oh, I'm fairly sure current players are going to run off new players. I got a free copy from a Streamer last year and gave it away to my 32-year-old sister. She loves Stranger Things, so finally decided to give it a try this past week.

She played a few nights. Then after Rank Reset happened on Friday and she got totally crapped on afterward as a new player, she's already uninstalled and won't be buying the DLC.

I'm honestly not understanding why such a hyped and popular DLC is releasing only four days after a Rank Reset. It's like whoever plans these things at Behavior doesn't know their own game, or the nature of their own community.

As far as cosmetic prices . . . yeah, they don't bother me. I've seen far, far worse than $10 cosmetics in games. Hell, just off the top of my head, go check out cosmetic prices over in Apex Legends. It's $10 just for a gun cosmetic.

  • @Cardgrey I'll chalk that up to a very poor idea. Subscription model games are not well looked upon nowadays, unless you're an I.P. that can pull it off through sheer marketing power like WoW.

Hell, I stopped playing WoW after 16 years of playing simply due to the fact that I was over and done with paying a subscription for a game.

Want to kill DbD? Make it subscription based.

  • @GrootDude I wouldn't advocate removing wiggle, but changing it into simply holding a key or controller button would be an improvement and much more tolerable.

Obviously, wiggling needs to stay to avoid constant basements. But there's no reason to make it a button tapping instead of a simple, and less aggravating, hold-a-key. They could even make it holding a key and having to do skill checks, thereby keeping people engaged.

  • @LordGlint Looking back, I needed to phrase my reply better.

I agree with you about DbD versus how many studios just churn out sequels. But I would also carefully watch what they do over the next year to 18 months, and if their monetization system slowly changes into something that just keeps further wallet-dipping.

The reason being, with the failure that Deathgarden has turned out to be (again), DbD is the only true full-game revenue source they have. Everything else they do is licensed stuff for mobile games and whatnot, and not even full games. DbD is what's propping their full-game offerings up, and though I hope it isn't used to do so, I suspect that if Deathgarden: Bloodharvest doesn't turn around after it leaves "early access," (which it really isn't in, it's a soft relaunch of an already failed game that is utterly failing again), then DbD might be milked as far as the player base will allow them to do so.

Trouble is, it's very easy to keep pushing and pushing that line until you finally cross it and then it's too late because you've pissed off enough people that they've left.

As it stands right now, at least on PC, whenever they get a rise from a free weekend or a 50% sale, the numbers plummet back down to the normal 20k to 30k range almost immediately after a free weekend, or a week or two after a 50% sale. Meaning they are not retaining new players on the PC platform.

That is a problem for longevity.

And if they aren't retaining new players and numbers remain flat, then eventually it's the Vets that foot the growing bill.

And with the licenses they keep chasing, that's revenue out the door to the licensors. If numbers stay flat and new players aren't retained to spend, that might prove a problem down the line.

  • @Boss They claim the SoS is completely random and every Perk has an equal chance of appearing. I really have to question that, because if Space Coconut was right in one of his recent videos, in the two years BBQ has been available, it's appeared in the SoS only three times.

Considering that is one of the most sought after Killer perks due to the BP bonus, it does make it suspicious, if his three times in two years was correct, about the SoS being "completely random."

  • @LordGlint I don't know that a DLC is giving a lot of content. Since you don't need the DLC to play a new map, all in all, it's really only giving:

    1) Two characters, one survivor and one killer, and six associated Perks for $7

    2) One character, either a Survivor or a Killer, and three associated Perks for $4

    3) In the case of Stranger Things, three characters, two survivors and one killer, and 9 associated Perks for $12.

What I will say, though, is that yes: The price is fair. If you look at games that sell new characters or heroes, such as Paladins or a MOBA, they average around $10 per new one. Behavior's price for DLC characters is more than fair.
