From a dev standpoint, you WANT your game to be more accessible because literally that means more people will play it. This isn't rocket science. Being thoughtful and making your game more welcoming to everyone is going to get you more sales.
People are being really super weird about making this game more accessible in this thread. Y'all okay?
omg hi i recognise you from twitter

The people who stand against you aren't the ones you need to convince, it's the developers themselves. Look at the Bubba situation- people still disagree with that, and they always will, but it was resolved because the developers were convinced.

Again, perfectly reasonable.
Like I said, accessibility options would be great. For example, I would personally love an option to turn off the in-game music, since it gives me headaches sometimes.
I just dislike the attitude of the people advocating for the options. Why would BHVR be inclined to listen to someone about their disability issues when that someone is being an overly-aggressive bully about it? Why would making demands like you're picketing at a political speech change anyone's mind about anything? If anything, it just turns people off of the idea of making accessibility options, because you'd be letting the picketers into your community.
In my opinion, the ends DO NOT justify the means. There's no need for people to be rude and twist people's arms to get what they want. Being polite and rational is what gets you what you want in this world.
"Being polite and rational" oh you mean like going through the official steps to leave copious amounts of feedback and bug reports, only to be ignored time and time again and then finally simply brushed aside with a warning? Not even a promise of further developments.
Because going via the official process hasn't worked. Peoeple have been making proper forms of feedback since May 2017 and it hasn't worked. So that line of logic is a little flawed.
Nobody got anywhere by being passive. Sometimes you have to make yourself heard.

See, that's a reasonable and well thought out point. I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, just people need to understand that they aren't forced to play the game. They can do something else if playing games is hazardous to their health. If it's too dangerous for you to take part in a particular hobby, the best choice is to simply drop the hobby.
Yeah, it would suck to not be able to play your favorite game anymore after getting into a car accident, but it's just one game and there's so many other things in life you can do for fun. If someone lost a hand or something, they would have to play with a prosthetic or use a specialized controller (that's actually my greatest fear, losing a limb. I trained myself to be partially ambidextrous because I used to be very paranoid about it). Photosensitive players don't have such luxury of being able to adapt to their situation, they can only choose to stop playing.
However, I agree to disagree that people aren't being overly demanding. I'll be 100% honest and admit I'm biased VERY heavily against the DbD community. They tend to be really stuck-up about everything, and treat BHVR like they're all terrible people for making a game that's kinda bad sometimes but mostly ok. I also tend to not really care if people think I'm wrong about something, I'm a bit of fringe thinker so I'm used to it. I prefer to say what I believe to be true.
btw, I'm not even talking about actual disabled people, because I guarantee you that the overwhelming majority of people complaining about lack of photosensitivity accessibility in DbD don't have photosensitivity issues. They're just moral grandstanding for attention. Sucks to hear it, but that's what I think. The people that I know irl that have photosensitivity issues don't even play video games or watch TV at all. It's just too dangerous for them to risk getting a seizure just for the sake of doing something so frivolous, so we play card games and board games instead.
Which is why I don't mind saying that the people saying all this are being selfish or entitled. It's because if they actually had the issues they are talking about, they wouldn't be on a forum about a hobby that could potentially kill them. I just don't buy it, I think they're full of it. The people I know with photosensitivity problems won't even go to people's houses if there's a TV there.
Hear that @kizuati you don't have epilepsy anymore

I'm objectively right, though. You can't point out a single mistake or incorrect thing I've said, because all I've done is describe things that are simple facts. All you can do is claim the moral high ground, which you don't even have.
No one is obligated to change something they have worked on for 6 years, just because you can't enjoy it. No one is forcing you to play a particular game, and there are many games that you can play other than Dead by Daylight.
I mean calling disabled people selfish for wanting to experience the same things able-bodied people do is in fact an incorrect thing to say because it is not a fact

I'm not AGAINST accessibility. I just think it's kind of entitled to expect that some stranger you've never met in your life should put in large amounts of work to change their creation just because you have different needs and you're making demands. It's this sort of completely stuck-up, self-important mindset that I can't get behind. People act like they're the center of the universe, and everyone should be doing what they say. I find it insufferable.
There's something like 7.5 billion people on the planet. Not everything is going to suit everyone, different people have different needs. I mean, I'm a left-handed musician. If I want an instrument that I can play, I usually have to pay a premium for it or get it built from scratch. Do I ######### and moan about it all the time and send emails to the manufacturers? No. No, I don't.
The people on this Earth do not cater to my whim, they are living their own lives and it's up to me to solve my personal problems by myself. If something isn't working for me or I need something done a certain way, I find a solution to the problem without expecting some stranger to do everything for me for free. More people should think the same. A problem is no longer a problem if you have solved it yourself.
Oh okay so we should be able to mod DBD to remove the photosensitive bits then? Great, glad we've come to a solution.
Calling people with disabilities stuck up and entitled because they want to be able to experience the same things as everybody else is able to is... well it's an odd hill to die on to say the least. How dare they want to stand a chance at having a normal life where they can experience things the same way as able bodied people! How self-centered of a concept to not want to be alienated because of a gentic trait you cannot control.
It's definitely a hill you've chosen to die on. Not exactly the best one though.
Oh and for the record, the stance you've chosen to take is also known as being "against accessibility".

But I'd like it to take 2 people out of action and 16 seconds, not take 1 person 8 seconds.

That's the neat part, you don't.
The more pressing question is: How far are you willing to express your skill in this game when many of the objectively correct (and thus skillful) decisions you could be making are considered unfun?
I'd argue that playing off-meta characters and builds and actively handicapping yourself in your playstyle and still winning shows substantially more skill than playing the most meta you possibly can

At this point I'm convinced people just aren't going to understand. Most of the these issues could be fixed and they wouldn't even notice, but they'd rather tell players who have been playing the game for years with little to no issue to just stop playing it. One of the worst events in the game for anyone with photosensitivity is flashlight macros, so it makes the posts admonishing people for having reactions ignorant at best, dubious at worst. Everything else can easily be fixed by just changing the overlays that can cause issues, or even just having an alternate that can be toggled locally. Its really not a difficult or invasive thing to accommodate, unlike the portable harding tests players can carry around because the devs refuse to put a sanity check on even their flashlights.
Literally
Just give us client-sided options like colourblind mode. An optional photosensitivity mode would do wonders for the experience of photosensitive people.
Hard of hearing features have, thankfully, been confirmed after the whole Spine Chill debauchle, so I'm interested to see how they'll be implemented. Hopefully a similar vein of DBD mobile.
People are so against option accessibility features with the feat of it granting an "advantage" or being "unnecessary" without realising it wouldn't impact them at all while helping to not only improve the playerbase but the reputation of BHVR as a whole

If someone has photosensitivity issues, I don't think that staring at a screen of LED lights that are rapidly changing color is a good idea in the first place. If they want to play games, there are plenty of games that don't need a TV screen to play them and have large communities built around them.
It's just strange to me that someone would do something that they know is harmful or dangerous for them, and then blame the person that made it instead of simply not using the product. It's like a diabetic complaining they can't drink energy drinks because they have so much sugar in them, but they could just drink black coffee instead.
Now imagine someone has invested lots of time and energy into the game before it was given a photosensitivity warning. Doctor was a rare enough occurance that despite the danger it was manageable. Hell, they may not have even faced a Doctor before putting in time and money, because he's so rare. The devs even seemed like they cared after removing mori spamming due to both the ability to hold people hostage and the photosensitivity dangers.
And then they come out with new Haddonfield, Sadako, don't fix LOD issues, and slap on a warning and call it a day.
All the time and money has now been completely wasted.
Accessibility is all about making sure as many people as possible can play a game. This needs, you guessed it, the developers to change things.

"This Orange Glyph isn't great, but it doesn't literally prevent my body from functioning"
Then make a spicy youtube video where you play an M1 killer, Trapper, Ring or someone really in the low tiers where you send yourself to the game.
I understand that the old glyph was physically not possible for you. That's poor design.
This new glyph that has almost no effect on some killers is really stupid. The fact that it doesn't tell you what it does is also stupid.
You can for example play Blight, Nurse or Nemesis and bring no kick perks to completely ignore the effect. That's a really stupid design challenge for a "challenge".
Then make a spicy youtube video where you play an M1 killer, Trapper, Ring or someone really in the low tiers where you send yourself to the game.
That still won't make me violently throw up and cause me to become literally completely incapacitated. I'm so sorry to tell you this, but is being actually achievable- it doesn't matter on who- does not make it worse than something that would cause me to have to stop whatever I was doing for the rest of the day because if I move, I lose my lunch and most likely my breakfast too.
Nowhere did I say it was well designed. I literally said it wasn't great- and what's the opposite of great? Terrible!
But worse is comparative and in terms of comparing two unrelated effects, entirely subjective. That's why the final two words of my comment are "to me". Because, to me, the fact that I can still play the game after finishing it means it isn't worse than the old one.
Does that mean that, to you, it also isn't worse? No, of course not. The joys of things being subjective means that we can both be correct here.

Unfortunately the devs have a history of changing the "ingredients" for everyone and not having both options. Examples being hook struggle change, the wiggle mechanic soon, multiple visual effects/camera movements, chat filter, etc.
They also haven't done that for major accessibility changes (colourblind options) and the struggle and wiggle changes have the added benefit of not completely deleting controllers from existence within half a month

I don't know, maybe I'm just a terrible human being, but it seems like every little thing in this game causes some sort of issue for someone somewhere. I get tired of people wanting to change everything to suit them. It's a horror based video game. That means that it has things that aren't for everyone.
I can't eat certain foods. I get violently ill if I do. I don't ask restaurants to change the dishes to suit my stomach. I eat something else, or go somewhere else, no matter how tasty the dish might look.
I'm fine with adding a setting that changes the game for them personally, but I'm not cool with them changing things that affect my play experience.
Let's stick with your analogy of food and Kizu's request for better photosensitivity options.
It's like going into a restaurant and seeing there's something you like with an ingredient you're allergic to, but there's advertisements for a version of the dish without it. Nobody else is being forced to have this version, and can continue to enjoy the food with the ingredient in, but you're able to enjoy the same dish except this time it won't kill you.
-
Worse is subjective.
The old Orange Glyph was completely unachievable for me. I watched a video on it's effects hearing the Forums complaints and had to stop watching after 30 seconds and lay down in a darkened room for 2 hours before I could function again. It was literally completely incapacitating from 30 seconds of exposure- let alone how long a regular game of DBD can take. And the possibility of needing to do it multiple times? No.
This Orange Glyph isn't great, but it doesn't literally prevent my body from functioning. It's definitely not worse to me.

They'll never do this as the voice lines are part of the dlc people purchase. They're a selling point and if you can turn them off it diminishes the value of them.
They won't disable them for every player in the game, no. But a client-sided option that allows all other players to still hear them doesn't impact this whatsoever.
If the voice lines are inticing you to buy the DLC, you won't switch them off.
-
@ByeByeQ said:
I can agree with more options for controlling the audio/visuals in the lobby. Some of the ambient noises and repetitive voice lines get annoying. I imagine spending bloodpoints on Sadako is such a joy with her giving you the creepy eye every thirty seconds.
In game though, they have to stay. Being able to remove them would make it easier to hear that creeping Jake with his Iron Will nerfed.
There's an option to change the size of the HUD which allows players to see more because there's less HUD taking up the screen, which is especially important given the fact the new HUD is still larger than the old one ever was at default. Yet nobody complained that killers could suddenly see more.
If every player has the ability to do so, then it's hardly an issue because everybody can do it. Alternatively, don't just turn down all other audio by 11 whenever a voice line plays, BHVR.
-
@Wowie said:
Wesker I can understand, but how often do you go against a Pinhead?
Leave me to my funny Doug Bradley lines.
You'd still have access to those lines. That's why it's a client-sided only option, so every other player would still hear them even if you as the killer switched them off.
Also, one of the major reasons I don't play Pinhead is because of him yapping. I'd find it a lot more fun to play him if he'd just shut up for 3 seconds honestly.

Sadly German isn't much help either. Was hoping that other languages may not have had the issue and it was just a mis-type

Honestly the 6th Anniversary was my make or break point, and they delivered. Having an actual roadmap with things they're planning on doing was an absolute godsend and seeing them not only stick to their promise of delivering content but also letting us know about delays?
