  • With Nurse I just try to keep a fair distance, work around the edges of the map looking for generators and assisting teammates when it's reasonably safe to do so. Try to engage her as little as possible. If she spots me and heads in my direction I just try my best to be as random and unpredictable as I can

  • I don't ever see anyone using Plague, Blight, Twins, Oni, hardly ever Freddy. I don't understand why, if so many people consider some of these characters so good, they're outnumbered twenty to one by Trickster players in my games.

You're not completely alone on that about the ambient score. I just want my custom music because when they give it to us, it gives this feeling of "This killer really was just brought into the modern dbd era." When they don't change it, it feels like "Oh, well they're still old dbd standards." I just think certain killers deserve their music given to them even if there are some like you where it's like "The chase music is fine".

Yeah I think that the killers' unique "theme music" (I believe that's essentially the same thing that you're referring to) is pretty cool. I like pretty much all of them. I haven't been playing the game long enough to know a time when things were different. It's just the generic "dun-dun-dun-dun" killer wander music that I don't care for.

what i mean is that killers that have good kits get nerfed because he is doing well

I get you, I was just saying that the game would probably feel a lot less imbalanced to a lot more players if matchmaking wasn't so seemingly random.

  • It's hard for me to truly say whether I think the game favors one side over another when I'm rank 20 being matched against people who are rank 7.

I played only one game. After two minute one survivor was on deadhook against a bubba. I took the aggro, looped him until he left me bc all gens were almost done. Found me again after all gens were done and downed me with noed. My teammates left and i was frustrated, but then i kobe'd with the last attempt and left.

It was fun but it was 4 red ranks against a rank 9 killer. Matchmaking as usual.

A few nights ago I was brought to the exit by Leatherface only for him to nod and then kill me anyway. I guess it's a thing for them to let you do your thing just so they can wait to do theirs during the egc.

  • Funny, I went and reviewed my 1st month of playing the game just last night and came up with my own statistics based on my recorded games.

This is, of course, purely anecdotal but here are the honest results of my experiences thus far:

    ===

Five most popular killers: Trickster (obviously, he's the newest even though everyone says they hate him), Huntress, Doctor, Hag, Ghostface. Probably about in that order.

Five least popular killers: Twins, Plague, Oni, Blight, Freddy. Again, probably about in that order. I've faced the Twins literally three times, TOPS. Freddy, less than ten. This is after like 300 matches now. Freddy is widely considered top-tier from what I've read, as is Blight. Can't explain this one.

Wraith would be on the higher end of the middle, Deathslinger probably at the bottom of it. I see everyone else at more or less the same rate. Sometimes a few times a day, sometimes not for a few days.

Most popular survivors: Feng Min, Claudette, Meg, Bill, and maybe Kate. I see at least one of them pretty much every game. I don't know if I've ever had a match without at least one of them in it.

Least popular survivors: Quentin, Ace (almost NEVER see these two, ever), the thicc girl whose name I don't remember, Ash, and Jeff. All of these characters are very uncommon in my games. I see Felix and Yun-Jin more than any of them, and I even see Laurie Strode almost as much as the most popular characters yet supposedly everyone thinks she's the worst.

Most common realm (don't know about specific maps because this one has like five): Coldwind Farms. I get one of those maps probably 6 out of every ten games. The various versions of the auto yard and the two Yamaoka Estate maps are the ones that usually fill those other four slots.

Least common realms: Hawkins Lab, Saw factory (which bums me out because I've come to find this one to probably be my favorite), I get it maybe once every couple of days. Hospital, Haddonfield. Pretty much all the indoor maps and Laurie Strode's place. I get Midwich at KIND of a decent rate, maybe once a day. Everything else is somewhere in between.

It's solo que, killer, SWF sided.

solo survivors are the one who struggles the most if they get a bad team and good killer imo. SWF is pretty much always at the advantage and for killers its pretty much a hit n miss

    Thank you.

    -Solo survivor

  • I wish I could choose my lobby theme from earlier ones that I didn't get to enjoy. As much as I love rad 80s-style neon (not sarcasm) I felt much more immersed in this game when it loaded up a quiet campfire in the woods.

Regarding music, am I the only one who feels that it's weird to have a moderately low thumping ambient score when playing as the killer? It seems artificial to me, like the killer is listening to his ipod. I'd rather it be completely silent when stalking. The chase music is fine, it's the "okay, the match has begun, go find victims" track that I don't like.

  • is the requirement of multiple kicks a new thing or has it always been that way? I could have sworn that when I first began playing a month ago it was a single kick to take them back down to zero. I only ever see other killers kicking them once as well. Yet I've run across gens that I had to kick like five times to fully knock out. That's a bit ridiculous.

Anyway I can't personally relate to how you describe things because I'm just not experienced enough as a killer yet, but I believe you. I'd probably feel a little more frustrated with gen repair time if I played killer more often. I do know that I spent several hours straight a few nights ago running a killer main and every match was literally like 3 to 6 minutes long. I guess that's gen-rushing, and yes, it WAS frustrating. I don't like treating this game as a race but sadly I think I'm in the minority on that.

I wish for thumbs up it showed people they received a thumbs up. Might encourage better gameplay of they see people are giving them thumbs up when they're a good teammate. I'd give it to killers that didn't camp or slug til bleed out.

That's what I mean. I give thumbs up to loads of players, survivor AND killer, if I enjoyed the match and thought everyone was giving it their best, etc. Similarly I do the reporting on people who are clearly cheating or otherwise abusing the game (nothing like face-camps or stuff that I may just not happen to like, I mean legit things like what we've discussed here). I often wonder if anyone sees it, or is in any way aware of it. I mean I'm not the best player in the world, I'm new, I've only played a few hundred hours' worth of matches. But never in those matches did I get a single thumbs up, even when I clearly saved the day for someone (if not the whole match). I wonder if it really is just an empty click that literally does nothing. Which would be a shame because you're right, if we could see how popular a player is while in the queue we'd maybe be more likely to want to play with them, whereas if we saw that someone was constantly being reported we'd quit out and re-queue. I know I would.

The problem, of course, is that IF there is no monitoring, no oversight, then the system is either worthless, gets abused, or both. I can see the team wanting video evidence of actual gameplay "crimes" for this reason. That is, again, assuming that anyone looks at it.

80 seconds and that's ALONE without prove, tool boxs, BNP. It doesn't sound like a whole lot until you face competent survivors that can abuse strong loops..And all of the sudden. You're down to 2 gens after only getting 3 hoiks

You aren't wrong. The variables do make a difference. I've played as killer and tried to pressure the gens HARD only to find that, apparently, I happened to be choosing the wrong ones because a good two generators would be knocked out in like a minute or two. That's frustrating. And for whatever it's worth I hate the loop game myself, so I feel you on that as well.

I only say that I feel that it's fairly balanced (by fairly I mean "reasonably") because there ARE killer variables that can slow or restrict the gens, and again, in my experience if a survivor is downed most players start diverting their attention to the save.

It's really kind of a back and forth to me. As a killer I admit they feel too fast, but I'm not especially good as the killer yet. As survivor it seems like it takes ages, even with a toolbox that quickens things by like five or seven seconds, and the killer is almost always inevitably disrupting me and undoing my work halfway through.

  • I'd go with Doctor myself. Of the locked killers he's one of the easiest to figure out how to use effectively, has good range, etc. The Shape is a good one too, he's listed as hard but doesn't take that long to figure out. Getting someone like the Hag or Spirit would take some time to become really decent at and if it were me that would be a disappointing expenditure. I'd rather get a new killer that I could have fun getting to know more quickly.

I've had several that were blatant working together but hit wrong button to save video on ps4, hit screen shot instead so no video was saved. 🤦‍♀️ Still reported and sent descriptive explanation of what happened, hoping either another from match sent video or maybe they keep record of people getting reported for same thing often. Very least able to say I tried. 😂

Yeah, I suppose it's all we can do. I have no idea whether anyone pays any attention to reports, we just have to hope for the best. I mean like the props button for example. Does anyone know when they get props? If not, what's the point? Are the post-match options just for false appeasement? I'd like to think I'm not THAT cynical, but I do wonder sometimes.

  • @BrokenSouI said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/243960/can-gen-rushing-really-be-considered-a-thing

The problem is gens don't take long enough to do. On top of having things like prove thyself and BNP to make them go even faster. Meanwhile they just removed the last add ons that give killers any sort of slowdown on gens. Then when killers have to slug and camp hooks(at the right times) and use NOED for any sort of a second chance. It's cried about and called boring

I don't know, I see that argument a lot and I assume that it's largely from the killer side. Repairing a single gen is what, roughly a minute and a half? That might not sound like a long time but try walking over and staring at a blank wall for a count of 80 or 90 or whatever it is. Now do it four more times. That's an eternity.

That's not to suggest that there aren't ways to hasten the time, or work together, and it obviously ignores the fact that survivors are usually working on at least a couple at a time, or several on one. But every time a survivor is incapacitated, especially when the other survivors then often drop what they're doing to go for the save, that really stretches things out.

I guess what I'm saying is that I find it balanced myself. If the gens are knocked out quickly then yes, they can feel too fast. But if the killer is on his or her toes and successfully downs even one person, maybe two, that's almost a guarantee that the generators are going to abandoned for several minutes. The killer can obviously damage them too, or prolong their repair time. Again, my own subjective opinion is that generator repair and the variables that can affect it are about where they should be.

You need to report the players at end game screen then go here (https://support.deadbydaylight.com/hc/en-us/requests/new) to send additional player report information with video proof. They won't update you on what action they take, if any.

Thank you. I always report both killer and survivor but I didn't know where to go to send the video proof. I'll start doing that. Thankfully I've only seen collusion a few times so far but that's still a few times too many, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

  • I may be in the minority but my favorite matches are the ones that last a little while. I'm not gunning for the win, I don't care if I win. I just want to have fun playing the game. I have the most fun when there's a lot of cat and mouse, hiding and chasing, opportunities for both objectives AND altruism, etc.

My least favorite games are the ones that end in three minutes because either I was immediately tunneled, hooked and face-camped or because my team immediately went crazy on the gens. It's not the funnest thing to have 3 or 4 minutes of debatable "gameplay" for every five minute queue.

  • I record all my matches, where do we go to submit the videos? And is there any evidence that anything is done about it? I don't care about losing, but I do care about losing to someone who is taking advantage of everyone else's desire to play the game properly. That kind of crap needs to be nipped in the bud whenever it's spotted.

And before someone advocates for it, or questions how we can tell that there's collusion, it's really not that hard to tell. When you're behind a rock or using an aura perk or something and you see the killer and another player running around together, it's pretty obvious. As for the argument that it's okay, that it's a strategy, etc., well, no. The entire existence of this game is based around the concept of killer vs. survivor. Period. Collusion between the two is obviously not something that is intended and it's ignorant to suggest otherwise.

Agreed; there is no lower form of life than Survivors that work with the Killer. Killers who allow it and play along are almost as bad. They are pathetic cheats.

Agreed. Anyone who gets their rocks off by playing a game with the intention of deliberately ruining the experience for everyone else needs to ask their parents why they were abandoned and / or speak to a mental health professional about the early signs of sociopathy.

  • LOL it was people talking online. I enjoyed F13 well enough and respect the love that the developers clearly have for the IP, but the game is a terribly imbalanced and far shallower DBD-lite.

Normally there's a mix of what kind of people play killer. There are even nice bubbas. but trickster? i dunno about you, but i have yet to see 1 (ONE) tricksterplayer that would not be scummy. Just one.

Normally I would agree with you, I was seeing nothing but cheap, obnoxiously-behaving (teabagging, standing there hitting you with knives during the sacrifice animation, teabagging, needlessly rude trash chat, etc.) Trickster players ever since he debuted (which, sadly for me, is exactly when I began playing the game).

But a few days ago I was in a match with the Trickster that lasted a legit half hour. Not because we all sucked, but because we were all, from what I could tell, evenly matched. It was the best match I've ever had. Total cat and mouse, total back and forth, lots of evasion and teamwork, getting caught, escaping, etc etc etc. It was a masterpiece of a match. Literally everything I hoped this game would be.

The second half was down to one other survivor and myself. By the end the Trickster player got both of us down. He got Claudette up and let her escape through the gate, just raising his arm to begin some knife throw practice on the way out. She got it, and obliged him. Then it was down to me. I laid there watching, knowing that this guy was cool. He nodded to me during a previous chase. Sure enough, he picked me up and carried me to the hatch. After a half hour of back and forth the guy apparently respected our ability to survive well enough that he decided to let us go.

Granted, this has DEFINITELY been the exception for me, not the rule, but it happened. Half an hour of an active, intense, back and forth game, and at the end he had us both down yet chose to let us both go. I respect the hell out of that. The guy made my day and showed me just how fun this game can really be. I sent him a friend request immediately, if even just as a thank-you gesture and repayment of his respect.

  • If it were a system that would actually work and not be abused I'd be all in favor of having a dedicated "thread of shame" for survivors who work with the killers. Not even so much to shame them, but to let other players know that hey, when you're in the queue with these people, just bail and look for another match.

There is nothing worse than survivors working with the killers. Nothing. It fundamentally betrays the entire purpose of the game, thus ruining it for everyone else but themselves. I ######### hate 'em.

  • It'll be Mr. X, and I'm fine with that. I'd like to see a big, hulking, mysterious trench coat-wearing stalker type in this game. I think he'd be a great fit.

Granted, I do want to see more "creature" killers in this game (not that there aren't already quite a few, but it's been relative humans for a while now), and I also love Jack Baker, but he's just a random angry dad without context. Mr. X is the latest (and to many, most memorable) threat. He makes sense. It certainly WON'T be a third chainsaw maniac type.

You just can't expect to ever survive. I just run meme perks and go for dumb things.

Right now I am using for the people with diversion lol.

This comment actually makes me feel better. I didn't know that the solo survivor game was considered difficult, I figured that all of my losses were just me being bad. While I'm sure that plenty are just that - I'm humble enough to recognize that I need a lot more experience - the fact is that I've still managed what I consider to be a fair number of escapes. Sometimes I'm even the one who manages to slip away and get the last genny or two and / or open the exit gate and lead the others to it, which isn't a big deal to a lot of players I'm sure but which makes me feel pretty good when I manage it. I guess it's not just that I'm new and need to improve, it's also that I'm playing a somewhat uncommon and difficult version of the game. I wasn't aware of that.

I still suck as a killer to an embarrassing degree but I DID get a 4K with Michael Meyers last week (on the Switch Lite - while standing inside the entrance to a Walmart - no less) and no one can take that away from me. :P

There are many knowledgeable peeps here ask those questions! :)

I appreciate that. I'm trying to learn by reading but there's a lot of slang and "insider" talk that kind of goes over my head. I do ask (or at least Google) if something seems really important and I'm missing something major by not asking, but I don't want to make a pest of myself. I've seen comments here from people who seem really cool and down to Earth, but I also see so, SO many people who seem to have no patience for people who main "the other side", I can't imagine what they think of some punk nobody like me interrupting their fun, lol.

I make it sound dire, it's not really all that bad. I love playing the game and don't let the negativity bother me that much. I also used to moderate a gaming site where negativity was the norm. I just kind of get the feeling that it's on me to try to educate myself as much as I can before opening my mouth. :)

I do enjoy participating in some of these conversations though. Letting people know what it's like for a new player to be entering the game at this stage.

Hmmm, that isn't just you. a lot of people don't ever really get over the fear of the killer, or improve other things like camera control, learning tiles, navigation and other stuff because just like you said, it's hard especially in an environment with better (playing longer ) people. So there are almost like "Survivor game trails" where people learn how to win without improving on other areas and that's "good enough". It's also part of why killers get a little jealous sometimes because there's a lot of stuff that looks really cheap or easy, low hanging fruits that doesn't really exist on the killer side of things.

Personally, I love survivor gameplay too and I would play a lot of it if I didn't love killer even more

I like people who enjoy playing both sides. I wish I saw more of it. There's way too much needless hate between the two "tribes". Both sides are fun and this really is a great game.

Fear of being observed, chased, and harmed in some way by a superior force is something that I really enjoy. It stems from some real life experiences I've had (nothing I would claim to be supernatural but certainly some things that were spookily hard to explain, as well as some clearly human yet potentially dangerous situations). My cousin and I used to go into a forested park by our homes in the middle of the night in our 20s, just hanging out talking about our favorite horror movies and whatnot, and even though it was a closed park in the middle of the night and it was utterly silent without anyone else apparently being around, we had situations like a flashlight beam suddenly turning on and pointing straight at us from somewhere in the woods, strange loud bangs that we couldn't explain, the unexpected (and unexpectedly bright) beam of a police spotlight sweeping right towards us from hundreds of feet away, etc. It's a very primal fear to be in a place you're not in control of, yet feel safe in, only for that safety and certainty to abruptly be stripped away and find yourself forced to jump up and run from whatever's coming. It's an adrenaline rush, like waking up from a horrible nightmare - you're glad that you're safe, but feel that much more alive for having had the experience.

There's a single-player game that is, in a way, very much like DBD called "Monstrum". It takes place in a cargo freighter on the middle of an unknown sea, at night. There's one of three randomly chosen entities wandering the ship, you have no way to defend yourself against them, if they catch you once it's game over, and the ship's floor layout is completely randomized every time you play. All you can do is sneak, hide, try to keep out of view, run for you life when you're spotted, and hope to find the (randomly placed) objects that you need to escape before the creature gets you. I've played hundreds and hundreds of games of Monstrum because I just can't get enough of that tension that comes from essentially hiding in the closet or under a desk, watching this murderous threat walk (or crawl, or float) by, hoping that it didn't see you. DBD replicates that same fundamental experience, the experience of helplessness in the face of uncertainty. For those who particularly enjoy and are looking for it, anyway. I mean none of the killers "scare" me, but the tension of trying to not get caught by them, the sudden startles that they're all capable of, and the creepiness of something like watch one creep by the locker you're hiding in is a really cool feeling.

On the much more pertinent point that you made though, yeah, there's actually a very real learning curve to this game that I didn't know about and, to be honest, don't really like. I don't enjoy looping, whether as the killer OR the survivor. I think too much of the gameplay revolves around it. I was dismayed to learn from a new, incredibly skilled friend that there's all this science to learning the tiles and when to loop, when not to loop, etc. So you're right, I'm thrown in the game with killers who are way better than I am and know all the tricks that I don't, as well as survivors who probably think that I'm just a dumb or lazy ######### because I don't know all the intricacies that they do. I don't fault the game for being a bit more complicated than its concept makes it first appear, and I certainly have no problem learning and improving, but you nailed it: When you're with people who are mostly better than yourself it's difficult to learn beyond just replicating what they do to the best of your ability and having no idea why it worked for them and not for you.

That's literally what happens. And you have to realize we have more survivors in this game to begin with because it's just a lot easier and more rewarding for less skill or effort, at least against 99.9% of killers.

Huh, okay, I wasn't aware of that. Makes sense though. I guess it's around the time that people in some of the more populated parts of the country get out of work, they go home and meet up with their friends to play SWF.

I myself prefer to play as survivor because I prefer the gameplay style, I enjoy the sneaking and assisting and the fear of getting caught more than the seek-and-destroy aspect of the killer side) but as I'm new I don't find it particularly rewarding. I regularly get matched with killers who wipe out all survivors for 25,000 or more BP while I and the others average anywhere between 8 and 18. Like I said though I'm new, I guess when I get better I'll start making more BP. Which of course is going to take a while because it's hard to get better when matched against people much more experienced than myself.

  • @TTV_WAWAbyWibWib said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2120786#Comment_2120786

more SWFs happen when people are home from work to play with friends and all the bad killers stop playing because "SWFS too hard" hence bad queue times

Is that actually the consensus? It is actually common for survivor groups to start gathering up in the evening and killer mains to start dropping out because of it? If so that WOULD explain the timing on my side.

  • I think the glow is just right (not so bright that I'm following neon arrows, not so dim that I can't even find them) and I personally don't believe that they should point out directions. I think that's too much of an advantage. At that point one might as well have an onscreen map that always shows the direction of the nearest survivor.

Just having scratch marks are enough, in my opinion. I think it's a fair advantage for killers which encourages survivors to play more cautiously (or strategically). That said, I wouldn't be against them being closer together. It's kind of silly to be chasing someone who manages to get around a wall and disappear because the scratch marks go eight feet high and ten feet wide across every surface that the survivor happened to look at.

  • I've found that I can play survivor through the day (US Central time), usually from early morning to mid-afternoon queue times are a minute or less. I've honestly had a lot of days where I can survivor queue in under ten seconds. It's amazing, but it can happen.

I've also noticed though that as the day goes on, the survivor queue steadily gets longer. By roughly 8 or 10 pm my time the queues are a couple of minutes. By midnight, maybe 1 or 2 AM, playing as survivor is all but impossible. I don't even necessarily mind waiting up to five minutes to play a single match. I may not like it, but if I'm really itching to play as a survivor it's sometimes worth it. In general though, I've found that queue times at night are FAR faster for me as a killer. Those "minute or less" daytime survivor queues are just as fast when I'm playing a killer at night.

I wish I didn't HAVE to alter which side I play depending on the time of day, but doing so at least eliminates combined hours of waiting to play at all.

    Yep! LOL

Idk what it is with some people who play Wraiths. That's happened to me too, even in red ranks ( Red rank is 1-4 btw). I had a Wraith in a match who just slugged a survivor, and stood over top of them clanging his stupid bell over and over and over. No one could get near that poor survivor, and so of course, they ended up disconnecting. I don't blame them.

We got all the gens done, but this jerk had NOED, so he one-shotted another poor survivor, and proceeded to clang his bell as they were slugged, long after the other survivors had escaped, until that poor person bled out. He wouldn't even hook them. In that way, he was doing it to goad people to disconnect, as I'm sure he enjoyed the idea they would be the ones punished (the d/c penalty and all that).

trust, there are some very juvenile sociopaths in this game.

That's actually why I never do much online gaming, period. Anyone who runs across me and the comments I make about being new to the game are probably like "idiot deserves to lose, he's half a decade late". No, it's just that I have an anxiety disorder, have always been a relative loner who's enjoyed single-player games for decades, and didn't start computer gaming until about 10 or 15 years ago. My first online experiences (CoD, GTA V) were toxic as hell, just a bunch of children. It astounded me. I was in my 30s back then, I didn't understand the "WIN AT ALL COSTS, INCLUDING AND ESPECIALLY CHEESING AND CHEATING!!!" mentality. It convinced me that I wasn't missing anything. But I DESPERATELY wanted to play this game. I went to buy it as soon as I heard about it, years ago, but when I saw that it was online only with no bots (understandable) my heart sank. None of my friends care much for online gaming, are interested in this game specifically, or claim to have computers good enough to run it well. That left me with the only option of playing 100 percent of the time with strangers, and my experience and instinct (not to mention everything I started hearing about this game's community, no personal offense to anyone in it) taught me that this would be a miserable experience.

Nonetheless a friend bought it for me and DID play with me for a week and I had a great time. Not because we only looked out for ourselves or anything, but because there was familiarity and trust (and plenty of online gaming experience on his side). Then he had to commit to his college work. Since then it's been as solo as it gets. While I do love the game, and have no inherent hatred for either side, I've noticed that yes, I get as many games against or even WITH jerkoffs who seem more interested in dicking around than actually playing the game as it was designed to be played. Haha, look at the survivors swirling and teabagging at the exit. How fun it is to go against people who have spent hours mastering the art of running in circles just to waste my time. Oh look, here's a killer who's working with a survivor to screw everyone else so they can run around them on the hook and send them misspelled taunts in chat after the match. Yay.

I disconnected once, and had to learn the hard way. I'd had a rash of bad games - like ten really great killers in a row (I prefer survivor because, quite simply, I enjoy the cat and mouse hide and sneak gameplay more than I like the hunting and killing gameplay). I was pretty much brand new, we're talking like day 6 or 7. I have my second match in the hospital, a map I loved and really wanted to get to know. I never got the chance because I get Coldwind all the time instead. So anyway I'm slowly sneaking around trying to get some bearings of what the map is like and boom, within 30 seconds The Plague (of all characters. I've seen her like four times since then) comes out of nowhere and smacks me down. She leaves to let me bleed out but someone heals me. Cool, time to get away. I guess this was an early experience of being tunneled because sure enough, I gingerly crawl to a locker but within 15 more seconds she shows right back up, ignores the other person, and knows right which locker to grab me out of. Hooked, sacrifice sequence begins. ######### this, I'm gonna just disconnect. I wasn't even intentionally rage-quitting, I was trying to save time. It had taken me a good five or six minutes to even get the queue for the match, another minute of waiting for people to not click "ready", another half a minute of loading, and then my actual "match" is two minutes long. I figured screw it, I don't need to sit through a half-minute death sequence, just jump me to the next match already. Boom, not allowed to play with any of my friends for 48 hours. Because I'M the bad guy.

But I get it now. I shouldn't have done it and haven't since. I don't like people disconnecting in my games either. But I mean, I was dead. My match was over. I was just trying to get on with the next five-minute queue. Again, lesson learned.

I don't really know what my point is here. I don't like bitching about either survivors OR killers (not that I'm accusing you or anyone else of this, I'm just speaking for myself) because I see both sides, I've had fun with both sides, and I've noticed that, perhaps because of the poor matchmaking, a new player like myself faces a pretty high (to frustratingly insurmountable) challenge regardless of which side I'm on. Play as a survivor, most or all of us die. Play as a killer, most or everybody escapes. Yes, I know that I need to get better. I accept that. I don't care if I win or lose as long as I have a fair game with fair players, balanced skill, and can play for more than five (or two) minutes. I'd also prefer not to have the Wraith making me mute my TV because a win means that much to the person playing him. But, just speaking in general, I've found that the game really IS honestly more difficult than it seems like it should be as a solo player who's just trying to learn, improve, and meet other good sports. The game DOES seem a bit more balanced in favor of the killers to me, which I won't complain about, it's just made "getting gud" sort of difficult. Which, again, wouldn't be so bad if I were matched against other people who were trying to git gud, and not people who already spent 2000 hours doing so.

...I type way too damn much.

  • Yeah that's a fair enough point, I hadn't thought of that.

I don't do much online gaming, I guess I'm used to team-based scenarios only happening in private lobbies (CoD, GTA, etc) where there are either bots or less uniquely specific numerical requirements. The asymmetrical nature of this game is new to me.

At Rank 15 (I think that's what you said you were) you absolutely should not be paired with a red rank Killer. That's just ridiculous.

You will always hear people on forums saying "Camping? Just do gennzzzzzz" as the ultimate answer for this chronic problem, but anyone who plays Solo survivor knows it's a bunch of BS. For one thing, in solo queue, you literally cannot communicate or coordinate to the other 3 players to abandon the hooked one being camped. You can't control what they do.

Also, I think most solo survivors have empathy for the person being face-camped. We all know how miserable it is to work all day, come home to play a game for fun, only to spend it with a Wraith, most likely played by a spoiled, basement dwelling teenager, sitting in your face, beating you on the hook for 2 minutes. According to DBD devs/mods/forumers, abandoning all humanity, shrugging off the suffering of the survivor stuck on the hook makes you a great person and a highly skilled gamer. Alas, some of us just get pissed off at these small-d energy scumbags and try to save the person anyways. Even just so they know we get how much it sucks.

If it only happened once in a blue moon, that would be one thing. The fact that it's constant? It starts to get on one's nerves.

Well, because I'm new I don't know exactly when red rank begins but yeah, given the hours that I play I'm usually between rank 14-20 (my average seems to be about 16). When I first started playing, which was about four weeks ago (almost the exact same day as the All Kill release, whenever that specifically was), I seemed to be consistently matched up against others of roughly equivalent experience. Since then - I honestly don't know what happened, this is before the patch from the other day - I began noticing that no matter my rank, I'm now seeing people as low as 4 on a consistent basis and I THINK I've also encountered a couple of reds. On the 13th I was happy to see that "oh good, I'm with all 20s again". That lasted a couple of hours before it was back to me at 15 or 16 and killers at 10 or less. I read that the matchmaking is based on hours played? That's absurd. If it's true I wonder if it even takes hours PLAYED as opposed to hours queued, hours in the menu, etc., into consideration. I also wonder if it calculates hours played as one side versus the other. Shouldn't the matchmaking of a competitive online game be based on your win/loss record? Maybe total bloodpoints earned? Something other than "this guy got a phone call and left his game running for two hours, he's ready for stronger competition now".

You're correct about the communication issue. I appreciate that my teammates almost always start edging towards trying to unhook me whenever it happens, but there are times when I prefer that they just concentrate on that last genny or two and let me hang for a bit. None of us are mind readers of course, they can't know that I'm willing to "take one for the team", or at least wait a little for them to find a safer moment, but yeah - face tunneling sucks because when you're there, you're usually there for the long haul. Either the killer will NOT go away so the teammates either ignore me completely or waste all their time roaming about trying to wait for him to leave, or they DO distract him and get themselves slugged as I sit and watch us all lose the match even harder. I personally do feel that camping is a valid strategy in that it CAN be countered, but that doesn't mean that the game is any fun for the person being camped. That's like saying that survivors should have endless flashlights who can just stand there and blind the killer the whole game.

Funny that you mentioned The Wraith, the worst face-camping I ever experienced was when I was the last survivor and he found and hooked me. I was at full health so I had nothing to do but just sit there. Apparently the other player had nothing better to do either so instead of running around the map or whatever he just started running circles around me alternating between bashing me with his cudgel and going crazy with his bell. Just a good solid minute of sitting there staring at my television, controller at my side, as some spastic ######### literally ran circles around my helpless ass just beating me and going "GONG! GONG! GONG GONG! GONG"! Same with the entire death animation (which of course I didn't struggle against). "GONG! GONG! GONG! GONG! GONG!"

I get it. You won. Now go graduate high school.

  • I just don't understand why I get thrown in with SWF groups myself. I'm a solo player, it's going to be rare that I ever have my friends playing this game with me given our schedules and whatnot. The game should understand that if I just go to jump into a match I'm playing by myself and should be teamed with other solos. It's best for everybody.

  • Wait - killers are angry with survivors and survivors are angry with killers? Each side thinks that they're superior? When did this become a thing?

Just wait until you spend time in the trenches, grinding your way up, hoping for decent matches, only to find those Killers face-camping in yellow ranks were rewarded and continuing the same method at Rank 2.

    Lol looking forward to it.

I've only got about 400, maybe 500 hours into the game (probably closer to 300 when you take away queues, loading, bloodweb, etc). I'm an okay player but I'm still relatively inexperienced. It took me a minute to learn that face-camping can be countered by players focusing on generators instead of running straight for the save, but I still hate it when I'm the one who's camped. It's really not the most fun "playing" a game by just sitting there on a hook, doing absolutely nothing, slowly and helplessly losing the game through no real fault of your own. There have been times where I just put the controller down or went to the kitchen to look for something to drink. I have better things to do with my life than watch myself not playing a game.

So yeah, the red rank killers I get who play that way ARE a pain in the ass, but I just kind of grumble and shrug and hope for the better in the next match. When I face a red rank who is CLEARLY just an expert at the game, great timing and intuition, perfect combination of perks, etc., it's still not that fun but I at least get to sort of play for couple of minutes.

Either way I wish that there was a better matchmaking system. For all you skilled killers out there, trust me: I don't like being a "potato" (or a slightly more capable version of such) and making your game boring any more than I like being thrown against those of you who have been playing this game twenty times longer than I have.

  • I don't mind most red rank killers, in a lot of cases I can tell that they got where they are by being really good. Some are ruthlessly efficient to the point of amazement.

I've only been playing the game for a month though, so I just don't like being put in matches against them at level 15.

  • When did this happen? Last night (roughly 13-14 hours ago) my queue times went from about two or three minutes to literally like ten seconds, right around 3 AM or so (US Central time). I'm not saying that this is any kind of conspiracy or something - for all I know it's just a "magic hour" when a lot of players in some location happen to come online - but it was extremely noticeable. Kind of confusing, even. I was ready to stop playing for the night because survivor queues always stretch to much longer waits late at night where I'm at, but this time, boom, it's as if someone just suddenly flipped the "fast queues" switch on.

Well that's different because there's the EGC in play.

And sure; play however you want. Just don't take the game hostage and hide for ten literal minutes if there's no sign of victory.

There have been times when I was the last survivor and the killer was just too good, I wasn't going to win. I didn't just sit and hide, but of course I obviously did my best to evade him or her as I attempted to locate the hatch or make some kind of progress. On these occasions, when the killer inevitably found me, I would usually just stand there and let them take the win, sometimes gesturing for them to do so. There's no point in artificially prolonging the inevitable, I'd just as soon move on to another match as I assume they would as well.

I see lots of ragging on the survivors. I see just as much ragging on the killers. For every 9 Dead By Partisanship comments I see, there's 1 sensible comment that says "I wish people would just enjoy the game, play it as intended, and be good sports whether they win or lose". Those are the posts that make the most sense to me, and I'm sad to see such logic dismissed by so many (just generally speaking). It's just a game. People don't need to be so angry and hateful towards each other about it. But, as has been pointed out, that's the world we live in I guess.

Hiding all game is annoying because:

    A. It will take a long time for the killer to find you. Most maps are large and if you run a bunch of stealth perks and spine chill, then you can fairly easily avoid the killer and basically take the game hostage. Not fun for killer.

    B. If you just hide while your team has to do gens, it messes up your teammates, and falls under problem A. Also, it annoys most killers when you get an escape you didn't deserve due to hiding all game.

I hate to double-post but that kind of refers to the post I made just before this one: I think the other player was pissed off because we didn't encounter each other all match, I think he just assumed that I was hiding the whole time. I believe that we were both running around and just didn't cross paths, it's a complicated map.

But yeah, as a survivor main, I'll agree straight-up that hiding all game is annoying for me, too. It's not just a lame way to play (is it even "playing"? Why play at all?), it burdens the other three survivors with that much more work and exposure. I may not like killers who camp, but I recognize it as a fair, counterable strategy. Survivors who just hide and refuse to participate? They make the game more needlessly difficult for literally every other person in the match.

So, i've been doin a lot more survivor lately (Mainly to play with my fiancé) and just had this in a game. Guy won, pretty decent demo, but then instead of GG immediately goes with this. Firstly, did SOME chases (Mainly just looped around a car etc till down, chase was maybe a minute or so... Guy tunneled the poor rank 5 off hook almost every single time.

So I keep seeing posts "Looping is so boring" "Looping takes no skills" etc etc. So what is it OTHER killers really want? You want chases but the only way to really chase is looping. You dont want "Hiding" (The only time there was any hiding was after 2 people were dead, me and the feng hid in the basement real quick to avoid him and heal to full.) Just curious. I have no problem with people hiding when i'm killer. People do it all the time. (I run whispers though so...yeah lol)

There really is no winning with this community it feels. (If people aint calling me a "Furry" Because I have a Poochyena picture as my profile picture on the forums it's something obscure) just take the GG and move on =w=

I'm new to the game. I've been playing for a month. Out of several hundred hours I've only once gotten a chat that ridiculed me (which was rather unfair as I was playing in the hospital, I map I'd only gotten a couple of times (the map rotation was buggy for some of us after the Trickster update) and the killer was an expert with the Demogorgon, which I'd only faced like twice because everyone was playing as the Trickster. I had the misfortune of joining the game at the exact same time that he came along. Anyway the Demo player was fine, he congratulated us. But one of the other players said "Wow, what a ######### team. Thanks a lot for helping out by doing absolutely nothing Mike. Really appreciate it. I only did 4 gens by myself. Thanks again". I mean, I was trying to avoid the Demo while also desperately looking for the last generator, I wasn't sure what else I was supposed to do. One player had already disconnected, the second one died right after, so it was me and a guy who was apparently another expert and demanded the same. It was a ######### thing to say.

I play for fun and sportsmanship, I survivor main because it's more my style (it's like an online game of Monstrum) but I enjoy playing as the killers too, I don't hate either side. I also don't care if I win or lose, I just want to have a decent game. I've found that a lot of people seem to treat the game as some kind of tournament which they MUST WIN AT ALL COSTS and then mock you for losing. I don't get that mentality but I'm 43, I got out of high school a long time ago.

Anyway I'll just repeat something that I saw online when I googled the game and "why are DBD players so toxic" was one of the first suggested pages. Out of curiosity I clicked it and the response was something like "Because the killers all think they're superior to survivors and deserve 4Ks all the time while survivors only want to loop and drop pallets on the killer's head". XD

  • Thanks for the replies. This user must have been cross-playing, I can't find his name on Steam and there's a little round icon of some sort immediately before his name which a friend of mine, who plays on the PS4, also has before his. I did send a friend request (as a gesture more than anything else, though I'd happily play more matches with him) but didn't think to check what happened if I clicked the in-game "view profile" button.

I suppose, in lieu of other options, I'll just thank Bradou1217 here and in the Wholesome thread. I'm sure that the friend request will make sense to him, if he still remembers the name when he sees it.

Meanwhile, is there any sort of universally recognized way of saying thank you in-game? Whenever someone heals or unhooks me and I have a chance to, I quickly double-crouch as such a gesture. But I also know that this is the universal gesture of disrespect if you do it a bunch of times, so there's a thin line between "I appreciate this" and "up yours". LOL.

I wish the devs would just implement a simple thumbs-up animation, though I understand that doing so would probably be much more than "simple".

  • A bunch of people on the DBD reddit were rejoicing that the hook struggle mechanic will go from "button mashing" to yet another skill check system. I expressed honest confusion as to why so many people hated the existing system, since players only need to tap a single button or key at a steady tempo not furiously not "button mash".

I was downvoted into oblivion with unoriginal insults ranging from "were you born an idiot or did it take time to become one" to "nice of you to mock people who have carpal tunnel syndrome" to "maybe you just refuse to accept what people are saying and need to move on". The second comment in the thread also blamed the button mashing "requirement" on new players such as myself.

Now that I think about it I wasn't even blasted for stating an unpopular opinion, I was blasted for expressing legitimate confusion.

Keep in mind there is practically a whole forum section dedicated to own creations like these (and I would have liked more feedback there on my concepts..)

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/categories/Creations

Oh, I didn't know that there was a thread for this exact type of thing. If the mods see this, feel free to move this topic there. Thanks for letting me know. I must be slipping in my old age, lol.

  • These are really interesting. Lots of fun to read. And I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought that an alien could be cool. I feel that most players would roll their eyes at the concept (of an alien I mean) - like the Indiana Jones films, there seems to be a line that shouldn't be crossed between the supernatural and the extraterrestrial, but I know that it would creep ME out anyway.

And yeah, Coldwind farm would definitely serve as a perfectly decent map for him, as would Hawkins. I guess from reading all kinds of alleged alien stories I have a very particular kind of farm and deep forest layout in my head. Something like the Kelley-Hopkinsville encounter, for those who are familiar (something from the sky crashing in a forest adjacent to a farmhouse, then creatures emerging from the woods to threaten the farmhouse's inhabitants, for those who aren't). The basis for E.T., if one can imagine that.

Or Travis Walton / Fire in the Sky. Hell, even the Hills who I mentioned earlier. Something that has not just spotted trees here and there, but the kind of deep dark forest that you could actually get lost in. Canopies and all that. Just something I'd like to see, anyway.

The Overlook Hotel from The Shinning(Kubrick's Version) with two possible maps. One being the interior of the Hotel and the second featuring the Maze.

I definitely thought of The Shining for sure. The hedge maze (not in the book but doesn't really matter) and the hotel interior could make for an absolutely amazing map. Weird apparitions, room 237, a crazed alcoholic killer with an axe (or mallet). Lots of potential there. I figured that such a thing would be highly unlikely to secure the rights to but I also listed other unlikely ideas, don't know why I held back on this one.

Perhaps the survivor stops pressing the struggle button in anticipation of the rescue? I kept doing this when I started playing. Stopped struggling to early.

Hard to say. I popped onto the DBD reddit forum for a few minutes yesterday and was utterly flabbergasted by the sheer number of people orgasmically praising the upcoming patch that will switch hook struggling from "carpal-tunnel inducing button mashing" to yet another tiresome skill check system.

I didn't understand, and I honestly still don't. I'm new, and went into this game pretty much blind, so when I went for hook struggles I assumed that I had to jam the button (I play on PC but prefer using a game controller, I simply spent nearly 30 years playing console games and prefer that style of control) to survive. After what seemed like a few unearned early deaths I realized that maybe I was going too crazy on the controller. It took a single game to realize "oh, I don't need to beat this thing like the drum in a speed metal band, I just need to keep a steady rhythm that's not even especially fast".

But everyone on that reddit is collapsing to their knees worshiping the devs for "FINALLY" instituting what is, I guess, one of the most requested changes since the game's existence? I can't help but think that I am completely missing something.

  • I don't watch any game streamers, I find that most people who post videos of themselves playing video games online are obnoxious. Thanks a blanket and unfair statement to those who aren't, but in my experience "e-celebs" are usually arrogant manchildren.

I'd rather be playing the game than watching someone else do so.
