Well, we weren't holding the game hostage either since the other 2 were doing gens. We were buying time so the other 2 can finish them.
This is how it works:
Killer is commited to protect the totems.
Okay, 2 of us will do gens. The 3rd one will get the totem and the 4th will get it while the 3rd one is being chased.
Killer leaves the 3rd survivor to protect the totem. Repeat.
It's a tactic, not being a douche.

First of all, it wouldnt happen to me because trying to protect the totem at all costs is dumb, especially if the killer is rank 1.
I play as a killer as well and i hardly get bothered by many of the usual complaints from known killer mains.

why do you want the vacuum it gave way too much of a distance when you got to a pallet the pallets are fine

Personaly I dislike this mechanic, which looks bad (the survivor just drops down like a bag of potatoes) and as I said leads to hits that shouldn't have been. Even as killer it feels bs honestly, because if the survivor managed to get to a dropped pallet in time he shouldn't get downed without any counterplay. Instantly destroying a pallet with the survivor right in range for another chainsaw hit already seems good to me.
TL;DR Cutting both a pallet and the survivor is a bad mechanic and should be removednah its fine it might seem bs but because we dont have dedicated servers well thats why
