Best advice is turn back now before it's too late. If you insist on sticking around though I'd say 1. Play both sides 2. Don't bother prestiging, especially on survivor side 3. Read perk/item/addon description after every match. 4. Use whatever perks help you.
1. Play both sides - this makes you play better. When you play killer you understand the power better and will know how to counter them better as survivor. I remember on a FB post of "things you may not know" a ton of survivors had no idea that when Legion is in Frenzy that their killer instinct will reveal survivors in lockers. Playing survivor you will get better idea of what survivors see - how your red stain looks, how stealthy you are actually being (example: wraith while cloaked makes loud noises), what survivors see in chase while mind gaming, etc. Playing both sides you also get a better feel for the different perks (how they work and which ones work well together) as well as usefulness of different items for survivor and addons for both survivor and killer.
2. Don't bother prestiging - right now the only thing you get from prestiging a character is bloody version of their default cosmetic and a unnoticeable increase of rarities on bloodweb. If you want to get achievement for prestiging I recommend you do it to your favorite character and then just keep everyone else as 50 while you max out perks. The grind in this game is pretty rough and prestiging doesn't help. Survivors are really just skins so I recommend choosing your favorite to max out with perks and only using BP needed to unlock perks on the others. Killers all have different powers so you'll probably want to max out perks on a few different ones.
3. Read perk, item, and add-on descriptions after every match - this will help you learn from the match. After a match when I was learning the game I'd think "how did the killer keep finding me?" and looking at perks or addons would have the answer - like Mikey has an addon to see auras but keeps him in Tier 1.
4. Use whatever perks help you. There are the meta perks but if you're just starting out those perks aren't necessarily going to help you. Running Small Game as survivor will help you learn totem spawns - once you learn the spawn locations it will help you find hex totems as survivor and blessed totems as killer. If you are not great at finding gens run Deja Vu that shows you aura of 3 closest gens at start of match and then again each time a gen is finished. If you're having trouble carrying survivors to a hook before they wiggle free run Iron Grasp. If you have trouble finding survivors run Whispers which makes a sound when survivors are near or Bitter Murmur which shows auras when gen is finished. There are perks to help you out when you're still learning the game, use them. The meta perks are useless if you have a hard time with the main objective.

EDIT- Oh nvm i saw the calendar here lol.
Rift Fragments, there's no pop up for them.
-
Survivors will go for unsafe unhooks just for unhook points or if being chased in hopes killer will go after the unhooked survivor instead, especially in solo queue where they don't care if the random lives/dies. It sucks for the person being unhooked because they can't stop someone from getting them killed this way.
If you just want kills keep doing what your doing - not your fault someone is making bad plays and getting their teammates killed. If you want to teach survivors it's a bad play leave the recently unhooked alone and go after the unhooker - they don't see a problem because they are getting away with the bad play, if they start to get downed/hooked instead they'll start realizing they shouldn't unhook with killer right there.
-
Ah yes, instead of using resources towards game health like fixing bugs and performance BHVR should use resources and time to block 3rd party chat on PCs and consoles only for people to just download the free Discord app onto their phones and continue to chat through there. Good plan.

You should play some survivor, not only would it make you a better killer to get experience from the survivor side you could check out the inventory and see that flashlights already do have a battery life - 8 seconds of use for yellow/green flashlights and 12 seconds for a purple. Also with a blind you are still able to move so you can break the pallet and start to move forward without losing much ground between you and the survivor.
Body blocking a hook isn't an exploit, it's an intended feature that is encouraged with survivors getting achievements for taking protection hits while a killer is carrying a survivor - there are also perks to help and survivors get BP. As killer you also have a handful of perks already to help with getting a survivor to a hook. Starstruck - while carrying a survivor any nearby survivors will be exposed. Iron Grasp - makes it to longer for a survivor to wiggle out of your grasp. Agitation - makes you move faster while carrying a survivor. Mad Grit - while carrying a survivor you don't have a cooldown on your swings. I'm probably forgetting a few but those are some.
Just chase the survivors out and get some free BP for hits. Or look around the map for any pallets or breakable walls you missed for extra BP. Walking around map while not in middle of game will also help you get to know the basic lay outs better which will also help you in chases/finding survivors in a match. Go afk and grab a drink, take bathroom break, play on your phone, whatever - sometimes if the survivors notice you're not coming to the door they'll make the mistake of going to look for you without enough time left on timer and you'll get a free sacrifice.

Hey friend! Maybe I can help clear things up:
Grades are not used by the matchmaking system. They used to be called "Ranks" and were used for matchmaking, but that is no longer the case. Grades serve as a monthly tracker for how much time you spend playing, based on the Emblem system (Emblems turn into pips, and pips turn into Grades). You can't lose a grade through de-pipping anymore, either! At the Grade Reset on the 13th of each month, everyone goes back down to Ash IV and starts the climb again, and they get a Bloodpoint reward for their previous Grade. Get your Grade higher, and you get a bigger reward!
MMR is an entirely separate value used for Matchmaking. It's hidden, meaning you don't get to see it. It has absolutely no connection to Grades: Your MMR doesn't directly influence your Grade, and your Grade doesn't directly influence your MMR. MMR doesn't reset each month, but it is constantly adjusting based on match results to try to find you balanced games. This is why it's called SBMM (Skill Based Match Making), it's trying to measure your skill and put you in matches with similarly skilled teammates / opponents.
We've been considering removing the Grade icons from the post-game screen due to this confusion. I was hoping we could leave them there to allow everyone to have a little way to show off / have some bragging rights, but I've seen lots of people confusing Grades with MMR (understandably so!). What do you think? Should we hide the Grade icons on the match summary?
Thanks for taking the time to ask your question! I hope this explanation has helped clear up some of your confusion so you can get back to enjoying the game. <3
With Grades being meaningless towards matchmaking they definitely have no place in the match summary anymore, especially when they just continue to cause confusion. It would be better to replace the grade with character portraits.

(PS4) Big freezes when The Legion activates his power. This is new and the freeze is so long this time, specially the second one.
Time lapses: 0:03 / 3:40
I had couple Legion matches today and had these freezes too. Wicked bad freeze if someone is unhooked at same time Legion activates Frenzy.
Played against few Nemesis today. Definitely the worst killer right now for performance issues. Triggers for freezes while playing against him can also come with the fun getting moved/turned around from spot I'm in issue. I was about to hit R1 to work on a gen as a trigger hit and was moved off to side of gen. I was just standing there, wasn't even in motion, when the freeze moved me.
-
Crouching can help at exit gates - dodging Huntress hatchets by lowering your hit box, sneaking over Hag traps, and body blocking a killer that downed a teammate in the exit area are just three I thought of quickly off the top of my head. Even if those reasons didn't exist and they didn't prevent survivors from being able to crouch the survivors that waste time teabagging would just find something else to do instead.
Just walk around and look for any pallets/breakable walls you may have missed during the match, open new tab/play on cell phone for the 2 minutes or less of EGC.

Game health shouldn’t be tied to one single chapter. It should be a bigger part of literally every patch.
I agree, it should be. I think if license holders started pushing for game health updates we'd get more. Imagine if RE chapter had required one.

Any that require BHVR to do a game health update as part of the license agreement.

if you play survivor, will the mmr transfer to killer or no
Nope, Killer MMR is completely separate from Survivor. You can't just die a bunch as Survivor to lower your Killer MMR just like the pips you earn as Survivor don't count towards your pips as Killer.
-
For killer only kills raise your MMR so just don't kill anyone. Survivor side only escapes matter so just die.
-
SBMM will match you with anyone if your wait is "long", add that with it only caring about kills/escapes and its basically rainbow rank matchmaking on purpose - we just can't see mmr and prove it.
-
Only if by "Labor of Love" they mean "Labor of Love of Money" or "Labor of Love of Testing Breaking Point of Playerbase."
-
After bunch of matches after day one of patch the freeze I get at beginning of match still only happen for the Artist. So yay it only happening with one killer.
Had a match against Nemesis on temple map. Performance was horrible, like RE chapter horrible. While performance issues have cropped up since patch was released no match had as many issues as this one. Felt like non stop freezes because everything was triggering them - freezes from hook/inhook, tentacle use, vaccine use, gens completing, totems being cleansed, chests being opened, etc. It was first match of a session and I considered turning off the game it was so bad. I tried one more to see if performance issues really just randomly got THAT bad but it was better next match against Ghostface.
-
Survivor: Bond/empathy because I've had too many random teammates use these perks to find people to sandbag, I see these more as sandbag perks than helpful perks.
Killer: Insidious and Knock Out because they are perks that encourage camp/slug gameplay.
-
I think fans would be very disappointed when the killer is just a skin and power inspired by the games and not super strong like they are in the games.

Okay granted, I mostly play killer - so many some of you survivor veterans can explain this sort of oddness.
Situation 1: I give you gate. Before leaving, you give me a final hit (cool) and put down your toolbox/medkit/flashlight. Why do you leave your items behind?
Situation 2: I'm chasing you, you are doing decently - but then you jump off a ledge (without balanced landing) giving me an instant and immediate down.
Situation 3: At the start of the match, you spend at least 3 seconds teabagging at each other. Is this some sort of traditional greeting?
Situation 4: Sometimes you slam out gens and avoid chases so judiciously that all of us end up with the same (low) BP. When you've already won, why not get into more chases/take some damage?
I'm sure I'm forgetting at least one.
1. Easy way to say thanks or gg without chat.
2. Few reasons: was an accident, hoping it confuses you, trying to get "fall from great height while being chased" challenge done.
3. Just saying hi to the randoms.
4. Previous match killer probably kicked their butt and they got 0 gens done. Next match they are more focused on escape. It gets pretty bad during events where survivors need to escape in order to get their reward. Survivors focus on escaping for reward which means focusing on gens rather than BP, this leads to killer trying to kill faster, which leads to survivors busting out gens faster... And you get this unfun vicious circle of who can do their objective (escape/kill) faster.
Another reason is the challenges - complete multiple gens in one match causes survivors to finish their gen as quickly as possible so they can try and get the amount needed done before they die or other survivors complete the gens before them.
-
I'm on ps4 and I get that message about once every game session. Have gotten it since we switched to grades.
-
I didn't get it on ps4. I saw someone on switch comment they did get it.

Here's a picture of me getting infected from this gen. I don't know if there's an add on that hides infection on an object.
Last night my swf partner got sick from touching a gen that wasn't green at all. We are in crossplay off lobby but that doesn't stop hackers.
-
Because then people could see if they are getting matched with someone way below/above their mmr. It's like getting rainbow ranks in old system and having screenshot to show matchmaking wasn't working. Now you can say the match didn't feel even but can't prove matchmaking isn't working.

Maybe it is not a coincidence then? I am not playing dbd now but if this happens to you it probably will for me too.
This could also be why we keep running into the same issues that were "fixed." In testing on day one it's fine so they leave it as is, but it's something that as time goes on starts to have issues.

That's what I'm finding weird, what is going on that it's during the time between that performance seems to get worse. It's like there's a memory leak that's not resetting when you close out of the game so performance just gets worse.

Yesterday playing I started noticing little freezes during hooks/unhooks. Not as severe as they were before but weird it had gone from not having them day of patch to noticing them starting to pop up again. It's odd that the performance seems to start getting worse between patches. Like between last hotfix and this patch the performance got gradually worse during that time. This patch day 1 hooks/unhooks seemed fine but now there are small freezes starting to happen.

Only time its backfired, which has happened many times. Is when the killer is hot on your arse after an unhook and no one is at the gate to open it.
This. Players forget that they need to open the door after the save and if everyone is injured from the save on way back with killer right behind them stopping to tap the door is usually the main reason 99% backfires. There's also the people that think they 99% but they actually 95% the door which is more than just a quick tap to open.
I 99% because every time I haven't the killer is running BW. 😂

To be fair theres a new killer out people are probably playing her alot.
My waits as survivor haven't been bad for awhile. I play on PS4 with crossplay off, alot of PS4 players turn off crossplay when they play killer matches so it helps with queue times as survivor.
-
Both sides BM and are sore winners/losers in end game chat/messages. Survivors teabag in exit and killers slug last survivor shaking head no and spamming their power on top until EGC timer or bleed out (whichever comes first). Both sides after winning will rag on the other for losing while playing meta perks even though they too are running meta perks.
While thumbs up actually doing something to bring some positivity into the game would be nice I don't think it will stop BM and toxicity in chat/messages.
BMing I don't see ending. There's already the devisive nature of the game, both sides claim they have it worse than the other and that the other is more mean (both sides suck). Then you have content creators helping push the survivor v killer animosity - BMing in their streams, stoking anger in their communities against the other side, encouraging BM by saying the other side is just being sensitive or they can do it because other side does. People like watching the BM videos and try to recreate them in game, be just like that streamer they idolize. There's also people that just enjoy getting under a randoms skin and BM is easiest way.
Ending toxicity in chat/messages would be easy fix - get rid of chat and move those resources to other things in game, assign everyone a DBD ID for reporting so players can't go into each other's profiles (can't message if can't see profile).

Oh holy, I just overlooked this entirely.
Snowmen, and you even jump on them? Is this a new animation?
So this Christmas event so far gives:
- 500 auric cells (worth 1-2 skin parts)
- 1 million BP
- 4500 iri shards (worth 1-2 skin parts)
- 60 rift fragments
- Giant snowmen (idk what they do yet, if anything)
- A new interaction animation
- Incentives to log in and play each day
And the Halloween one gave:
- 666,666 bloodpoints one-time
- Hidden pumpkins that did nothing
- A candle on a gen
- re-used assets
- Expiring add-ons and offerings that you lost BP and took away from the big one-time BP gift
- 2 skins
Did I miss anything?
---
I'm not saying the Christmas event is over-the-top amazing, but it feels more present, relevant, and overall nicer imo. I really want to say it's better than the Halloween event.
Which is odd, since it was supposed to be their bigger event I thought.
But I guess I won't know for sure until the event hits us anyway.
My one worry is they'll ruin it by making it like the anniversary crowns - killers just have to not DC while survivors have to escape. It just creates an extra unfun time. Hopefully any earnable cosmetics are either community based or things you can do even if you die.
Edit to add: anyone that hasn't finished the rift that will from the days they give out fragments can technically get Halloween cosmetics thanks the rift - Trapper Halloween cosmetic in there. 😂

A mini-rift using re-used tome assets and could be completed by just playing the game normally, and a pumpkin that, when kicked (using the re-used kicking animation for victor and gnomski), did effectively nothing. Then there's the barely-noticable aesthetic improvements to generators and hooks in the form of a single candle and maybe some vines.
Then the BP rewards were a flat 666,666 and BP from special gens/hooks. The problem here is, unless you used all the offerings and add-ons in your bloodweb effectively, you were probably spending more than you gained from the latter.
So, to me, the grand Halloween event was just a couple of skins with re-used assets and a near non-existent promotion of interactivity between users.
---
Meanwhile Christmas here gives you shards, way more bloodpoints, and even auric cells.
The calender is also simple, but at least it's something commonly associated with the holiday and promotes you to do something (logging in) that the Halloween event didn't even encourage because it just gave you a one-time flat BP bonus that got widdle away by expiring add-ons and offerings that you were forced to buy.
The pumpkins might be holiday related, but they were tucked in niche corners, barely visible, and even their treats weren't worth going for.
We're also getting snowmen in Christmas event.

You need a prime account for amazon, hook up to your twitch account, and then hook twitch up to your DBD account.
There's guides online for the exact process, if you search up "how to link amazon prime to twitch." Then there's options in your account on twitch to hook up games.
I'd detail here but I forgot the process honestly since it's been so long since I've done it.
Have Amazon/Twitch/PS4 linked, guess I'm going to have to get a BHVR account. I've been avoiding that because of the stories of people losing progress after getting one.

It's simple, and there's no skin rewards that I know of, but it kind of feels nice to have periodic rewards in the form of a well-known holiday calender.
Maybe I'm just too bitter about the Halloween event due to failed expectations though.

I'll answer what I can so we can both go back to building decks / falling asleep while watching The Big Game. I'm mostly focused on answering questions about the existing system, and not going into too much details about potential future changes.
- For those insta-queues that feel unbalanced, you're correct! Imagine the situation I was describing before where you are waiting and waiting for someone to show up in the queue that's within your range, but from the other side. A group of survivors is waiting (and to be clear, they might not be a full SWF, just that they are grouped together by the MM system), and then you pop into the queue: An opponent who is near the edge but within the boundary for their search. "Wonderful!" the MM system thinks, "I can finally give them a match. It might not be the most balanced, but hey, they're playing after a long wait!".
- We actually had a system in place to prevent smurfing / intentionally dropping your MMR before, and it ended up causing more problems than it helped. That's not to say that it's off the table forever, but rather that it's a really tricky problem to solve in a way that works across the board. it's not at the top of the list right now, as there are other issues that we can tackle with bigger payoff in terms of matchmaking improvements. Prioritization!
- I could talk for hours about defining a "good match", but I'll do my best to summarize: What the MMR system does is predict the outcome of a match before it starts. More specifically, it predicts the odds of the outcomes. With a large enough sample size, it's actually really good at this! If you look at all the games where the system says "PlayerA has a 60% chance of escaping this match", PlayerA does escape those matches about 60% of the time. Generally speaking (and I'm definitely simplifying here, so don't take this too literally) we operate under the assumption that a 50% escape chance per player is indicative of a balanced match. This holds true in most games outside of DbD, be it Chess or [Insert Popular FPS Franchise Here]. If both players are equally as skilled, then the odds of either one winning are about equal. So if you can make a match where the prediction is that the odds are equal, then you've likely got a balanced match!
- Some people are willing to wait 30+ minutes for a perfect match, and others don't want to wait more than 5 no matter what. So we have to find a decent compromise, which is extremely difficult. Remember that the MM system isn't just trying to find you good matches, it's trying to find good matches for every single player!
- I'm not going to go into long-term plans here but I will say that we have consciously decided not to show explicit MMR values for now, as doing this generally result in a lot of toxicity for other online games.
- I'm very familiar with the technique of managing group MMR, and it's something that we have also considered. For a while, I was thinking about maintaining a completely independent MMR for solo queue and group queue, which is something I have seen other games do. That said, several of them have moved away from that technique as it didn't actually provide much benefit for matchmaking, but did result in a fair bit of technical overhead. Overall, we're still open to doing something like this once we feel like we've got a good solution and that it's going to be a meaningful improvement, but there are bigger fish to fry for the moment. As it stands, we're taking the average MMR of the group and using that for matchmaking, which works fairly well at a high level. We'll likely revisit this after we've made other improvements elsewhere.
- SBMM never goes offline. It sees you when you're killing, it knows when you escape. It knows when games are bad or good, so play good for goodness sake! But for real, the MM system learns by doing. When you get matched in something that feels crazy unbalanced, the system is paying attention and adjusting both your MMR and your opponent's MMR accordingly. There are situations where the system can be very unsure about where a player should fit, and so it tosses them into games to calibrate their MMR. When you do happen to end up in a game against these folks, keep in mind that your MMR is likely not being adjusted that much by the result.
I hope that helps clear a few things up. Overall, the biggest challenge of building a matchmaking system is that it has to produce thousands and thousands of matches every day, so we have to take the big picture AND the zoomed in view into account. For every discussion we have about a graph showing all games in the last month, we also dig into specific examples to see how they are panning out, too.
Thanks for taking the time to ask questions and listen! <3
Is there something that could be put into place in matchmaking to prevent players from going against eachother multiple times within a certain period of time? Last week I had the same killer in 5/6 matches. I had 2 matches where I got hatch and 3 where the killer tunneled me out first meanwhile they had 3-4ks each match, our MMR should've been going in opposite directions. I stayed to watch the matches when I died to see how my teammates did. The wait to get into a lobby was quick, under a minute. I could understand if there had been a wait but this felt like we were instantly getting matched together - meanwhile I never saw the same teammates. I tried switching to killer but after 5 minutes of waiting I went and played something else. I get wanting to keep waits down but playing against the same player multiple times in a row is not fun at all.
