I've decided to shake things up today I'm a survivor main and games have not been fun at all lately. So today I'm going to be playing my hag off and on and just mess around with survivors. Try to scare them, chase them around without hitting them just chill goofy fun. Give some fun back to survivors as I can today.

thats sounds fun! i should probably do the same later tbh, maybe just doing chases and downing people but letting them wiggle out for some 1v1 interactions. enjoy yourself! :)

I shot a 41 at golf today, which was really nice but also really depressing (40 is my best round at this particular place; PAR 31. It's my "home course" that I really enjoy as it is almost perfect for my skill level where it's challenging. Most Exec 9s I find error on the side of being too easy).

In game, I was playing Pig for a daily and had TWO Meg's wearing pig masks in-game who had a lot of fun with it (I used a BPS as well). Ultimately I let everyone go after F'in around as Pig with them but one of them stayed behind anyway and gave me the kill, which was nice of them.

oh wow that sounds really interesting. i dont know too much about golf personally, but i'd love to learn about it in-depth some day. you sound like you're pretty good at it, though! a good challenge for skill and improvement is always a fun one

as far as that pig game goes, thats really cute haha i love that! pig games always seem to be really wholesome when you get the right people for it

It isnt worth it. I dont play the game much anymore. Play it with my friends maybe 1 time per week when it used to be almost everyday. I just dont really like the game anymore

that's okay! im sorry youre not having as much fun as you used to, hopefully you found something else to fill your time :(

Positive posts get no attention though, or they just get negative comments explaining why OP shouldn't feel positive about the thing they are positive about. So i don't feel like they are worth posting.

I think internet is full of negativity for a reason. I think it's probably because being a pessimist feels safer than being an optimist because you have no risk of being disappointed.

The news only get attention from negativity. It what makes them the most profit. Good news doesn't sell.

its true that news thrives off of negative reactions, that's one of the biggest reasons as to why info-tainment has become such a big industry today. negativity feeds into way too many problems that surround us.

i do agree with you, @OrangeBear, that being a pessimist can sometimes feel safer. i have been down that route myself. risking disappointment is a huge thing for me, so i never try to be too optimistic about something. but, i don't necessarily go out of my way to make myself feel like i have to be negative about everything either. if you're too negative, it stops you from enjoying things that you could probably include in your life instead

which is why i feel like this is a mindset that most, if not all communities that develop an echo chamber of negativity, needs

im happy they acted quick too, it really shows their dedication to creating a healthier community. unfortunately, some people will not always understand that trolls actively feed off of emotional responses... hopefully in the future there's a better safeguard against types of posts like that

i myself am working towards getting demogorgon to p100, currently on 37 atm and working hard! i've learned a lot of tech with them so far and will continue to innovate towards a stronger killer till i get there! :)

  • i feel like that would be a cool concept, especially with having an ocean-centric map or realm to go along with it. i'm just a little bit curious as to how the mechanics would work, especially since the survivors would essentially need an animation overhaul for all actions if they're underwater.

it'd be interesting to have a killer who's entirely focused on tracking though, it could set up for some really spooky situations if they lurk.

if not an actual killer concept, then definitely a cosmetic set or a beach-focused realm would be a very cool crossover event that BHVR could do.. i'd like to see that :0

Can't even ask simple questions about game mechanics without people assuming your MMR, assuming you're a killer/survivor main, assuming you didn't play the game years ago, assuming you wanted a nerf just to beg for a buff later, etc. I like the dedication you put into this post but, realistically, nothing will change. This isn't a community, just a playerbase at this point.

im not beating down on you for posting this because i 100% understand where you're coming from. my only problem with this is, just laying down and accepting the fact that this kind of thing exists rather than trying to change it, even if it starts with only a few people, will simply just let this continue to be a thing. by saying nothing will change, you continue to set the tone for it. playerbase or community, it's still a social setting with a bunch of people talking to each other, and people evolve and adapt to their surroundings. pessimism isnt always good. it kills motivation for change. it's not impossible, nor is it as difficult to change as people might think

it all starts with just one or two people

  • i apologize for the double-post, but i just wanted to share something i posted on here that i feel like contributes to this very thing that was spoken about https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/377641/this-community-needs-a-little-bit-of-a-face-lift-people-too#latest

the more i think about this thread, the more i felt like something needed to be said and i feel like there needs to be some sort of breather that we all need to take. it makes me sad to think about the fact that someone feels so burdened by a community that they feel that it ruined a game for them. i dont know why this post struck a chord with me in particular, but i guess its because it reminded me of how i used to think

so, i thought this would help. if people want to give it a read, i encourage it, and im honestly happy that someone brought up this topic in the first place

as a whole i think we all just need to do better and try to become better. its cliche to say, but that's just my genuine opinion. at the end of the day, there's always going to be something that irritates us, but i dont think its worth giving yourself a headache over, yknow?

  • i just wanted to come back to this thread because i think this is a very interesting talking point for a lot of communities as a whole rather than just dead by daylight's

i myself have personally noticed a serious uptick in negative voices in a lot of communities as a gamer, artist, nerd, you name it i've probably been involved one or twice. all sorts of fandoms for all sorts of mediums

yet, there's always a seemly overwhelming presence of individuals who set way too high of expectations or induce a sense of misery. i don't know why this is, or what psychology and technicalities have to say about it, but it's really saddening to witness how more and more people seem to be having way less fun with things or take things way too seriously. have they gotten bored? do they not know how to enjoy things for themselves? is it because they want to be in control of how content is consumed to suit their vision? what is their vision exactly?

there's so many questions and not enough answers for this sort of thing, and i feel like emotions take the lead way too much when it comes to a community coming together. unfortunately the only way we'll ever form a more positive community with anything is by starting with ourselves first and being the change we want to see

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/377518/the-community-ruined-this-game

You should always expect people to play to win. There's a free e-book written by game designer David Sirlin that talks about "playing to win" and i think this describes you perfectly:

    https://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/introducingthe-scrub

The derogatory term “scrub” means several different things. One definition is someone (especially a game player) who is not good at something (especially a game). By this definition, we all start out as scrubs, and there is certainly no shame in that. I mean the term differently, though. A scrub is a player who is handicapped by self-imposed rules that the game knows nothing about. A scrub does not play to win.

Now, everyone begins as a poor player—it takes time to learn a game to get to a point where you know what you’re doing. There is the mistaken notion, though, that by merely continuing to play or “learn” the game, one can become a top player. In reality, the “scrub” has many more mental obstacles to overcome than anything actually going on during the game. The scrub has lost the game even before it starts. He’s lost the game even before deciding which game to play. His problem? He does not play to win.

The scrub would take great issue with this statement for he usually believes that he is playing to win, but he is bound up by an intricate construct of fictitious rules that prevents him from ever truly competing. These made-up rules vary from game to game, of course, but their character remains constant. Let’s take a fighting game off of which I’ve made my gaming career: Street Fighter.

In Street Fighter, the scrub labels a wide variety of tactics and situations “cheap.” This “cheapness” is truly the mantra of the scrub. Performing a throw on someone is often called cheap. A throw is a special kind of move that grabs an opponent and damages him, even when the opponent is defending against all other kinds of attacks. The entire purpose of the throw is to be able to damage an opponent who sits and blocks and doesn’t attack. As far as the game is concerned, throwing is an integral part of the design—it’s meant to be there—yet the scrub has constructed his own set of principles in his mind that state he should be totally impervious to all attacks while blocking. The scrub thinks of blocking as a kind of magic shield that will protect him indefinitely. Why? Exploring the reasoning is futile since the notion is ridiculous from the start.

You will not see a classic scrub throw his opponent five times in a row. But why not? What if doing so is strategically the sequence of moves that optimizes his chances of winning? Here we’ve encountered our first clash: the scrub is only willing to play to win within his own made-up mental set of rules. These rules can be staggeringly arbitrary. If you beat a scrub by throwing projectile attacks at him, keeping your distance and preventing him from getting near you—that’s cheap. If you throw him repeatedly, that’s cheap, too. We’ve covered that one. If you block for fifty seconds doing no moves, that’s cheap. Nearly anything you do that ends up making you win is a prime candidate for being called cheap. Street Fighter was just one example; I could have picked any competitive game at all.

Doing one move or sequence over and over and over is a tactic close to my heart that often elicits the call of the scrub. This goes right to the heart of the matter: why can the scrub not defeat something so obvious and telegraphed as a single move done over and over? Is he such a poor player that he can’t counter that move? And if the move is, for whatever reason, extremely difficult to counter, then wouldn’t I be a fool for not using that move? The first step in becoming a top player is the realization that playing to win means doing whatever most increases your chances of winning. That is true by definition of playing to win. The game knows no rules of “honor” or of “cheapness.” The game only knows winning and losing.

A common call of the scrub is to cry that the kind of play in which one tries to win at all costs is “boring” or “not fun.” Who knows what objective the scrub has, but we know his objective is not truly to win. Yours is. Your objective is good and right and true, and let no one tell you otherwise. You have the power to dispatch those who would tell you otherwise, anyway. Simply beat them.

The good news, is this is a live game. But the problem isn't the players. The problem is that, for both sides actually, the most effective way to play the game and win, is also the most boring for the other side. It is a fundamental problem with the design of the game itself. If you want to be mad at anyone, be mad at the devs for not fixing this years-long problem that has existed since nearly the inception of the game.

hi i just wanted to comment and say that i absolutely love this e-book, thank you for posting the link to it, its a really useful resource that i feel like many people in the gaming community should read, it teaches very valuable life lessons!

They tried to, with Deathgarden. And that one fell off pretty hard.

They took a swing into a relatively unknown genre and accidentally hit the golden ratio. And I sometimes wonder how we even got to this point, considering how horrifying gameplay used to be back when the game was initially released.

    i see your point!

i guess this is just the nature of waking up one morning and going "i have an idea!" and somehow it works out. what an anomaly. 😊

  • @danielmaster87 said:

The game has a golden equation. That's it. I'd also like to say that there's a lot of people who play this game, myself included, who have thousands of hours in it. Not sure if that's common in other games, but it speaks to the dedication a lot of us have for the game, despite the constant talk of doom and gloom. I was thinking that's what you meant by playtime retention.

i think it's more than just a golden equation. i think, to some degree, passion has something to do with it. despite all that's done with it, at the end of the day we are sampling someone's passion in a game, which is what DBD was built off of. i think it's pretty neat :)!

    @Grandpa_Crack_Pipe said:

By sheer chance, everything went right with DbD, such that no one can really replicate it. Not even BHVR.

is it really by sheer chance, though? i understand what you're saying but i just cant help but wonder! given they worked hard at the game for a long time, with some exceptions, i think it's something that's been crafted and tuned very nicely. i think if BHVR was given the time and motivation, they could do it again. anybody can if they really wanted to, for that matter. it all just takes time and heart.

Me too but the game mode I want would be limited, none of the op ######### everygame. None of the green, purple, iri; items, add-ons, or offering. At most either side could bring the lowest tier item. Only bloodpoint offerings allowed. I think it would be a cool idea to give each survivor a different item, so a survivor gets a toobox, flashlight, medkit, or map randomly. Killers could bring brown addons and it doesnt come from their stockpile. And probably leave it solo que

that could be one of the match types i was thinking of for this sort of thing! i would wanna say that maybe match selection could be in the hands of those who wanna set their own preferred rulesets, but i'm worried that it would cause a significant divide in the playerbase when the casual-comp divide would already be present. randomized items and things like that should be an option though, for real!

  • @pizzaduffyhp90 said:

Would be nice to play a "Horror" Party game that DBD is and chill on it rather having to play so sweaty for the majority of the games. Friday the 13th never got SBMM during it's time period. Why does DBD need it? Ranks weren't perfect but, they were 100% times better than what it is now.

Survivors finish gens very quickly, bring the best stuff they can, and bring there best maps like Gideon, Red Forest, and Coldwind to name a few and I know this isn't every game but, it's almost every game. Killers have started to camp and tunnel more, usually all there perks are now just gen defence perks now, and most killers can't even do anything or get any results until the endgame.

All of that was still there during ranks however, it wasn't common as it is now. This game isn't ment to be competitive but, it keeps going that route by keeping SBMM.

Sorry for the rant I know most people won't agree with me on this.

as ive mentioned in another post, i feel like we're in the stage of the game where the community might benefit from a split between casual and competitive dead by daylight. i theorize that by applying MMR to both versions, at least it encourages one group to participate in another. competitive can also give the incentive of competitive awards, whereas casual pubs are just for those who are looking for bloodpoints or things like that. ideally this could introduce the concept of match types as well!

  • HAHA I LOVE THIS POST

  • i think the game could benefit from a split between competitive and casual. there's such thing as competition in party games (uno, for example.), so maybe it could work! i feel as if by doing so, it'd help people chill on the whole "i don't like who i'm playing with/against because theyre too good/too bad" thing

  • nahh wraith is not op. he's a very good fundamentals killer, though, so i think by mastering the basics of mindgames and navigating courses, he can seem like such!

  • i personally haven't noticed people wiggling out of my grasp as easily on midwich unless if they had perks to assist them, there was a bunch of body blocking, or offerings were used. that's concerning to hear, though. where do the hooks normally spawn for you?

  • i just try to hit as many people as possible, as many times as possible, and beat up gens as much as possible. sometimes i go perkless (what i call veteran mode), i play demo till i crash, or set little goals for myself like streaks or something. i count things, practice stuff on different maps, teach myself stuff.

there's a lot of options outside of kills and pips!

  • @SMitchell8 said:

Ranks were far better. What incentive will there be to play multiplayer once bots arrive? C tier downwards might aswell play bots instead of sweat factory. You can play as much as you want but your progress gets flushed down the toilet every month. Never get get past bronze personally as I don't get to play all that often.

Numbered ranks that partly reset were far better than this junk imo

i don't think bots are going to kill the multiplayer-base like that. bots can only offer so much interaction before you eventually get bored of the AI and want to have some variation in playstyles. unless they make the AI sophisticated enough to mimic players down to a T through some deep neural network learning, there's going to be a break at some point.

i understand your concern, though, but i don't think that's really realistic.

  • nothing wrong with enjoying yourself!

  • i mean even if bhvr is "killing the game" like you say it is, a game is meant to just be a game. idk if my mood towards all these things is different from others, but i typically just try to make a game out of the stuff by making it as hard as possible for myself, or maybe keeping count of things.

then again, i play dbd to pass the time, not necessarily be competitive.

  • I love survivors that do this, for real. They're always the coolest people too. x)

  • i think giving him a variety of traps outside of just bear traps might actually be the way to go. given that maps have been changed around quite a bit, i think he may benefit from being able to set up traps with different status effects. bear traps would be his main and the one that does damage, but i think other ones like trip traps or snares could give hindered effects with a minor slowdown, kinda like freddy.

not to the degree where the slowdown is extreme, but maybe just a 2s slowdown to mimic being tripped! and trapper could only set maybe 3 of these down in the map at a time. with this kinda thing though, the setting speed for traps would have to be adjusted since he'd be carrying more than 2 traps at a time.

  • @TAG said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2590571#Comment_2590571

That does not mean a game can't be balanced. Ya just gotta try to make the four on one side collectively as close to balanced compared to the one on the other side as possible.

    oh hello TAG :0

i'm not implying that it cannot be 'balanced'. based on my understanding on this community's idea of 'balance', it can very much have changes to help benefit both sides. however, because of the nature of the game and its type, you're still going to have issues that will always maintain some sort of unbalance for both parties, RNG being one of them. the game is designed to feature unbalanced dynamics for a reason, and it's to keep it from becoming stale or boring for most people. think of it as like a board game like 'sorry!' or a card game like UNO. they're, by logic, asymmetrical party games as well because of the RNG factor of the cards and whichever rulesets you decide to use.

in this case, the "ruleset" of dead by daylight is hook and kill or escape, and the RNG is your maps, tiles, perks of the other side, etc.

that's why i decided to respond to this thread's title, which is "this game will never be balanced", because they're actually right; it never will be balanced! i just thought it'd be fun to bring this point to the table.

  • @TMNoThumbs said:

Ah okay thanks, good to know. Guess the better play in this situation would be to just get slugged or only force the DS when he barely hit you with his knifes before so you can actually make some distance after the stun.

yup! whatever your strategy is, man!

  • @Mert_MK said:

I went into the locker to try and force DS because Trickster still went after me with Main Event, however that was completely pointless because as you can see, i was only 1 blade away from going down again. Wouldn't your meter reset usually?

    https://streamable.com/y04bwv

nope. it doesn't decay upon using DS or anything else. your meter begins to decay after you've been left alone for a long period of time (typically about 20-30 seconds depending on the add-ons used)

it only completely resets after you've gotten downed.

I dont think you are completely wrong but I think swf has more of an impact in high ranking games then you are letting on. Which is not fun for anyone except said swf. Just because its nature itself is unorthodox doesnt mean we shouldnt be trying to make it better

i only partially agree with you with SWF having an impact on high ranking games, due to only the fact that it requires a killer to play differently. the purpose is still there all across the board, however; a party of individuals working together to play against a killer. i do not deny that comms exist, nor do i deny that information sharing exists, though it needs to be recognized that factors like this have always existed in games that allow individuals to band together.

i digress; your opening post, from my understanding, puts the reason of "games being sweaty" in with SWF and SBMM. i just wanted to outline the reasons as to why you cannot balance SWF and why you shouldn't attempt to solely just because of SBMM trying to do its job after release. ^^
