if you feel like nurse will be fun for you, that's perfectly fine! more power to you!
you could also try to create your own goals to reach instead too. i think that might be a refreshing state of mind you'll benefit from when you play killer (or survivor, should you choose to play that side too)!
-
i agree with your viewpoint... i think this is very important feedback. hope the devs take it into consideration with the next patch!

i've been seeing a variety of perks and builds being used as far as "meta" goes...

demogorgon! the sound design, the silhouette and identity, the mechanics, everything about the killer is fantastic!
even outside of dead by daylight, demogorgons have been my favorite species in stranger things. a faceless creature who either follows something out of curiosity and instinct, or doesnt and does whatever it wants inside of its own dimension... reminds me of myself.

I can't fully agree on this - I understand what you mean but everyone is different. I personally have the willpower to quit and only continued to play out of spite and bitterness because 3 challenges did not track progress on me which later BHVR fixed or they just started working. I went around them because I'm stubborn.
FOMA is predatory and yes it does prey on the weak willed it also inconveniences and annoys normal users like you and I. For me I don't have the time to just casually play all the time because I'm working on game assets all the time. So sometimes if I like the content considering DBD is one of my favorite games yes I will sometimes play with the sole purpose of getting a challenge out of the way. I did this with the Ghostface battlepass because Ghostface is one of my favorite slasher villains but realistically I don't have the time and paying 1 dollar per level is stupid I'd rather buy the cosmetics straight up. These things are what makes me slowly get burned out on the game or consider just looking at DBD as a side game. My breaks on caring about that is typically when most of the contents of the battlepass is terrible and then I just outright ignore it for those months.
Regardless - Video game addiction is a thing. I've had plenty of friends I lost contact with that I've tried to help because they could not resist playing games due to limited content. As stupid as it sounds this is a thing. I won't name the game but I've watched a friend dip into their college funds and spend $2000 on MT's because they never wanted to worry about limited content again and I genuinely asked them "Are you out of your ######### mind - Why did you do that?". That's an extreme example but anyone can fall into that rabbit hole for any game with timed content. You could say it's affected me personally quite a bit because I've watched from point A to B on how it can slowly affect people. My friend that dipped into their college funds very gradually slipped down that slope for a steady 2 years. I eventually lost contact with them and they actually had to see a therapist from what I was told through other friends who somehow knew them.

I agree on this though - If you take a break from a game take a break from its community as well.
i wholeheartedly understand your viewpoint and agree with its premise. i was placing heavy emphasis on the ones who personally choose to go out of their way to interact with dead by daylight despite the way they personally feel towards some of the things that have been going on with it because they prioritize their self-imposed FOMA, not the ones who are preyed upon and the switch being flipped for them. the reason why i did so is because of the common language that's used on these forums in particular; "i hate this game so much", "i only ever really play now for x, y, z", "i decided to come back ONLY for the event", etc.
sorry, my response was written in the early hours on minimal sleep, i suck at words xD
as someone who has ADHD, i used to fear missing out on things in this game to the point where i would spend days thinking about it when my focus could be elsewhere. as a result i changed things around to better suit my health towards the game and remind myself that i am not obligated to play or catch up, and that the content is not relative to my own life. i was never a fan of MT's, i was just someone who liked to see my own results and liked to be present, so i can understand how individuals may be itching to get EVERYTHING and have also personally seen how video game addiction consumes a person as well (a part of a neglectful relationship with a past partner many years ago was the result of said addiction).
side note: i sincerely hope your friend is doing a lot better now, you have me wondering about this individual.
this is why i attempt to do my best to remind people that dead by daylight is not an obligation, and that it's better suited for them to take care of themselves before they attempt to "take care" of the game. there's a combination of reasons as to why someone may be sticking to dead by daylight, everybody has their own reasons! but it's a little concerning when players purposefully put themselves in positions to become infuriated with the game and start affecting the psychology of others.

When the devs clarified on what qualifies as a win, I think, only helped drive people's overall negativity with the game. Telling killers that the only way you win is through kills was completely the wrong way to go about it. The game should be balanced around hooks, but because they were told kills, that's what leads to many killers face camping and tunneling. Whereas with survivors they were told you have to escape. It doesn't matter if you looped the killer for five gens, if you died at the end then it wasn't really a good match, because you lost.
Knowing that we have devs with that kind of mind set behind this game, is going to prevent this game's community from growing, because the frustration is all too real if you're not doing exactly what the developers have said you need to do to win.
Simply put, the game needs to be rebalanced to where kills and escapes don't matter as much as the match itself.
you have a fair point! i am well aware with what the developers have said, which is why i intend to go against the grain and encourage the exact opposite of the stance of their own game. i do believe that it is the combination of both the developers and the players that fuel the negativity, so it is my mission to try and start something to remedy this.
with what you've talked about, i believe this comes back around to what i've already stated about the community determining the game for themselves. i think the competitive community's side of the story is a perfect example of this.
their scoring system, if i'm recognizing this correctly, is based off of hooks and points rather than directly kills in order to secure their own version of a "win" for a team. there was a difference in mindset to create a goal that was not present in the game itself, and it seems to have stuck enough to the point where even the developers catered to this side of it and have started their own tournaments with these rulesets! this highlights the very thing i'm talking about, where players are able to alter an experience for themselves despite the game's foundation.
as silly as i might sound with this, i 100% believe that you do not have to play by the rules in order to have fun. the win condition is a suggestion, but it is ultimately the choices that you allow yourself to make to enjoy dead by daylight.

As said in another post on another thread, DbD is the only game where developpers and players are advising to take a break from the gam out of frustration.
It does not exist anywhere else being symmetrical or asymmetrical games : L4D, Evolve, Valorant, Hunt Showdown etc...
It means there is a real problem with the game's overall balance/mechanics.
not necessarily true. you can have a very good and balanced game and still have individuals who develop an unhealthy relationship with it solely because of the reliance upon wins/losses rather than enjoying the experience. you even receive this kind of emotional response with singleplayer games!
breaks are warranted and are a necessity for anything, even outside of video games

I took a break for the longest time before hopping back in for the anniversary event. What I find funny is that I watch a lot of DBD on YouTube, which can be entertaining when you're watching people that have dedicated thousands of hours to the game, but for casual players like me, when I hopped back into the game I was quickly reminded just why I left in the first place!
i personally think that maybe you might need a new approach to the game yourself. maybe you can find a way to make it just as interesting even if you're not that good at the game! it's worth a shot given that you found a reason to come back for the anniversary. maybe you want to gather as much points as possible to level up your characters, or work towards a skin!
there's always something :D

i don't feel any different with them than i do with "survivor-sided" maps. i just see them as playing fields to navigate and try my best to get better each time i play an iteration of it. some maps i'm personally not a fan of because of invisible walls stopping me from flying and shredding 😭but overall my experience is to just spawn in and do the best i can!

@SweetTerror said:
I think what drives a lot of our fascination with DBD is that this game houses a lot of our favorite killers which naturally drives our interest to play the game, and seeing popular streamers upload fun matches also fans those flames. The thing we fail to realize though, is that a lot of the time it takes said streamers multiple hours to come across a single match that's worth uploading. Not to mention, DBD is not friendly to casual gamers, nor is it an easy game to step into for new players. You quickly learn before too long that solo survivor is maddeningly difficult, and killer is a sweat fest.
We see the fun that could be had, but sometimes the high learning curve with some killers mixed with the imbalance of skill-based matchmaking, does not make for fun experience. Sometimes the best thing we can do is shut the game off and move on.
i understand your viewpoint! your point highlights something to me that i have been trying to discuss with others lately; the importance of the player mentality.
yes, i agree that sometimes the best thing that can be done is to "shut the game off and move on".
i realize that despite the many challenges and difficulties that dead by daylight may provide to an individual, that a lot of us seem to hold ourselves to a standard that implies that we HAVE to stay committed to something we are just outright blatantly not enjoying. because of that, it forms an unhealthy relationship that is always at war with the positive content or traits that the game and community itself may provide; by staying committed to an unhealthy relationship, you are blinding yourself to what could potentially be a good thing because you become so used to (and gravitate more towards) the negativity surrounding the media.
competition naturally draws this out of people. dead by daylight at its core is a competitive game because it creates a rivalry between survivors and killers-- similar to a IRL sport like soccer, for example. with that being said, soccer can be very difficult when you play against people publicly because of the variance of skill levels, different field rules and restrictions, the conditions of the ground, the cleats you wear that day, the amount of air that's in the ball, the type of ball, etc.
with that being said, would you continuously force yourself to try to enjoy soccer if you are not enjoying the things it has to offer? would you maybe try to improve and embrace these variables? or, would you create something of your own and try to make soccer into something that's fun and easily accessible for you?
dead by daylight follows these same exact variables because it is the players that drives the experience. if everyone is always looking for the negativity in things, you're more bound to be pessimistic about the situation and the less likely you feel inclined to return. that's why i recommend for those who need a break, to take one. their perspective and feelings may be strained because they are consistently placing themselves in a position that causes too much tension.

@Dustin said:
Well to be honest - The game makes it hard for some people to take a break when there is constantly timed content - Now even made worse with holiday stuff in the store. I get what you mean but I've seen plenty of games perpetually pull people into a negative game cycle because they over exercise FOMA. Right now a lot of people (Even to an extent myself) are forcing theirself to play just to get the rest of the rewards from the battlepass or to take advantage of the huge amount of bp. After this event I won't be surprised if the playercount drops a little bit due to a lot of players having burnout.
Personally I cannot wait until the event is over.
as much as FOMA exists, you don't need to force yourself to play. the commitment is a conscious decision and i just wanted to remind individuals that their mental, physical, and emotional health will forever be more important than a game!

hmm... good question!
from a killer's perspective, i don't really see keys used too often for either aura reading or opening the hatch nowadays. i'm not really too sure how they could be changed otherwise to make them more appealing or have a different effect
the only thing i can think of is them possibly producing certain status effects when using add-ons for them. something to add variance. i don't really see any perks that make the survivor apply status effects to a killer directly. i'm thinking in terms of something like the halloween trick-or-treat pumpkins for example, when you broke them and they applied either haste or hindered.
it'd be interesting if they did something like... "decrease killer's movement speed for 'X' amount of seconds but blocks windows for you for 'X' amount of seconds", "decrease killer's visibility but exhausts you", etc.
i think that sort of thing would make chases really interesting and interactive.

I agree with you but i'm not the only players in DbD and most of them have decided try harding is better.
This started when the SBMM has been released, another thing that transformed DbD, a party game into a sweat fest full of try harders while the game has nothing competitive in it. The balance being completely broken and shifting to one side or the other depending the killer that is played, the perks and add-ons used and SWFs or not.
BHVR is doing a survey on balance and stuffs but that is not the concern they should have, they should just ask us : "when playing DbD, are we having more fun than being frustrated ?"
The answers would enlight them on how the community is feeling with the game.
I will add that this is the only game where the other players and the developpers are inviting players to have a break out of frustration, the only multiplayer game in the history of gaming.
i understand your position. the thing i'm trying to dig at here is that i feel like little bit little, it can be improved upon rather than having full reliance on the developers. the developers can only do so much to remedy the environment that's created by the people
based on what i've seen, each change that they've made seems to have an equal amount of pushback no matter the context, which is why i wholeheartedly believe that it has to start and end with all of us ^_^

Fact is they often do this, being event powers or new perks or new META.
In 6 years of DbD, there haven't been a single patch where both sides didn't have something too strong to abuse.
When it was not DH it was DS then COH then Resilience then MFT etc...
For killers when it was not Ruin it was POR then Pop then Petimento etc...
It just brings terrible gameplay mechanics and stale overall gameplay.
i suggest giving one of my other comments a read, maybe this may shift your perspective on how the game could be played instead if you feel that things are boring or stale! https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3475831#Comment_3475831

hi! demo main of... i forgot how many hours now but ive mained him since the stranger things PTB
its actually very easy for demogorgon to lose games due to breaking too many pallets, shredding too much, or teleporting too much. demogorgon is not the most powerful killer in the game and suffers quite a few limitations as with most killers at his level. he requires a lot of micromanagement of the game at high skill levels. even with techs included in a playstyle, you're never guaranteed a win!
with that being said, demogorgon's versatility allows him to apply all sorts of pressure either through time, chase, forcing survivors to hide, zoning, or being really strong with generators if played right. it's the versatility of the demogorgon that i think a lot of players struggle with. if you want to have an easier time going against the demogorgon, try to recognize what playstyle the killer is going for; are they more chase heavy? do they shred a lot? are they teleporting often? what is their behavior before and after they hook a survivor?
as with every other killer in this game, know your enemy and you will prosper!
have fun in the fog :)
-
i think competitive dead by daylight is very interesting!
what makes dead by daylight so loveable is that there's always an on-going sense of innovation that these players bring to light when playing at a high level. it's amazing how such a simple game can be extremely intricate and have a very high skill ceiling if played a certain way, even with RNG in play.
the psychology, the in-game techs, predicting, individual skill, micromanagement and macromanagement, knowing the inside and outside of a game to the point where you maneuver like its a part of you! its all so cool and it makes me want to play competitively myself, i just find myself being too anxious to do it sometimes. not to mention i dont feel nowhere near as skillful enough for it yet.
maybe one day i can bring my demogorgon to the comp scene!

Always nice to see a fellow demo enjoyer. 😊
my most favorite types of games. its especially funny when you pick your special survivor in a match and carry them with you, nod your head, or do silly things with them like "repairing a generator" (letting the first hit of the gen break animation play, then canceling)

what other games do you play?
Currently switching between
- Team Fortress 2
- POSTAL 2
- Maid of Sker
- Amnesia: Rebirth
- Payday 2
- We Happy Few
- Killing Floor 1
- Meet Your Maker (Currently on break as i've already completed all there is to do and is just waiting for the next big content update to drop in June.)
- Deep Rock Galactic (Currently a break until Season 4 releases in June.)
- The occasional replaying of games that i've already completed 100% of achievement wise.
im gonna take a look at all of these at some point when i have the time, ive heard of a few of these titles (and ive played tf2!) and im especially curious about meet your maker, payday, and deep rock galactic. i genuinely need to sit down and try different titles but some games im hyperfixated on have me in a chokehold HAHA

thats actually the sickest idea ever. the idea of a survivor being able to fight back in a way that kills the killer in an in-game cinematic would add a sense of tension and vengeance that i think would be quite reasonable given that survivors have been subjected to endless torment for the longest time.
-
i'm pretty sure a dev commented the same exact thing im about to already but if free passes were allowed for network DCs, it would enable people to exploit it through killswitches or other means since it enables people to find ways around the penalty. plus, a bad connection can damage the experience for other players, and wasted time isnt exactly good time :(

It's the same old for me, having fun in dbd like always while also playing a few other games.
Also your determination for posting positive threads deserve some credit, it's rather refreshing.
awesome! glad to hear youre having fun, what other games do you play?
haha thank you btw! yeah, im trying my best to shake things up a little here. if it makes at least a few people happy and changes some mindsets, its one step towards making a more positive community and that makes me very happy myself

Played with my friends in a swf and played against the rarest killer The Twins. It was the worst match ever. On silent hill and they slugged all 4 of us. Perfect example on why everybody hates twins.
sorry that you didnt have that good of an experience, hopefully you find a twins player who plays a little nicer next time. not all twins players are like that, so you might run into someone who makes the game more fun for you. keep trying!

i'm going to go off on a limb and say that the true way you are ever going to address this type of matchmaking is by giving players the option to host public custom games or create "rooms" that allow them to tweak rules to either be matched in a room with similar rulesets, or for them to manually go in a select which one they want. this way, it allows people to select exactly how they want to play and advertise it as such. arena/multiplayer shooters like quake, tf2, etc. were notorious for this
on the flipside, you can still have the option of having DBD create a lobby for you if you still want to play with randoms or dont want the extra work of setting up a lobby and waiting for people to join. but generally, i think allowing public custom matches that are selectable from a server menu puts the ability to curate an experience into the player's hands, while possibly providing different ideas for how the game could be played
this, unfortunately, will open up the door for prioritizing certain types of gamemodes which can lessen interaction with some features or types of lobbies, but in order to make everyone happy at least somewhat, you may have to just let them decide for themselves. to be completely honest, it all boils down to player choice at, realistically

"There are no playstyle in the game anymore, no more chaser/flashlight/juker or healer/rescuer players...only gen jockeys who hope to waste the killer's time as much as possible when being chased."
You hit the nail on the head with this, and this is the core problem - this is the direct result of people caring too much about "balance" in a game that was fun BECAUSE of all the ridiculous things both sides could do.
not only is it a direct result of people caring too much about balance, but it's also the lack of innovation from both sides as a whole. individuals who play this game allow themselves to feel limited rather than try to come up with something different.
i see it as like this; you are given all sorts of tools and options as to how you want to play the game. you have map offerings, addons, over 50+ perks for both sides, different ways of interacting with killers and survivors, etc.
there's actually a lot of versatility if you think about it! but for some reason, a lot of people feel as if they have to play a certain way to win or feel satisfied, which makes no sense to me. technically, you dont have to play a certain way worth of anything imho. you can win solely just by being you in a match.
will it be fun for absolutely everybody? not always, there's different mindsets for everything, but it never hurts to shake things up a little!

as someone who's played killer for over 3000 hours now, i havent really seen any issues with gens speeds as bad as a lot of people have pointed out? maybe its because my focus isnt entirely on gens but moreso the chases, mindgames and understanding positioning and using tech that i come up with or have studied. and i play what's considered a "b-tier" killer 99% of the time!
sure, sometimes gens do go by a little quickly, but i think its because i also generally play without slowdown perks and make mistakes like not accounting for seconds im spending doing something, breaking chases when i need to, etc., not to mention this game does have RNG so i am not expecting to win all the time anyway.
if the gameplay is not to your satisfaction, do you think it's time to maybe shift your focus towards a different goal instead?
