You know what affects me and get into my nerves? Diversity for the sake of being diverse... I am gay but I am tired of the people being diverse just for the sake of being diverse and then they fall into stereotypes or people who are there just because they are gay/lesbian... not lore wise. I mean, let's suppose Felix or any character in-game. Let's supose they belong to the LGBT+ group. Does it bother? No, because they have already a lore assigned to it. And the chapter was not "we are including a gay character" but "we are including a handsome german man who is also gay", I mean the main focus is not their sexuality but this upcoming chaapter is just focused ON IT.

How do you know the next chapter is focused on it?

the only official info we have doesn’t even say if anything LGBTQ+ will be added. The focus they are giving now is KPop/music, neon lights and a char who wears extravagant clothes, is involved in some kind of entertainment business and likes to drink coffee.

I probably should've tried to reword it a little better, the reason why I'm slightly against it is that something happened between me and someone else who was gay. I don't want to talk about it tho, let's just say I was scarred ok, let's leave it at that

    Edit: spelling error

I am sorry that something happened to you that was that scary.

but you have to differentiate between that one gay person and literally everyone else that is LGBTQ+. And yeah there are still others in that community that are unpleasant. Or worse. But that is not that way because they are LGBTQ+.

there are enough straight people as bad or worse.

"Why are there no (insert meaningless differentiating physical trait here) characters in our game, waaaaaah!!!"

Remember the good old days where a character's skin tone or weight had no effect on how interesting a character was. You bring up Adam Francis for his skin tone and just skim over the fact that he was a well written, altruistic, hyper intelligent character who did well for himself regardless of his physical appearance.

I love this era of acceptance and representation that's holding back creative character development.

As seen by Adam Francis, him being a black man isn’t holding back his creative character development though..

  • They almost certainly can if the performance shows that a change is needed.

but that may take time as they need to collect statistics and player feedback over a period of time.

It's not that I have an issue, its just apart of me absolutely despises the idea while the other just doesn't care. I try to avoid anything Lgbt period for many reasons, but I can live with it if it happens once

It will happen eventually. And you will be not affected by it because it will only be in the lore.

  • No you can’t.

it’s a feature that is getting frequently requested by the community.

the latest statement from the devs was kn December it think. They said it is not as easy to implement as one would assume and currently it is not something they focus on because they are working on other stuff with higher priority.

"But this is were good writing comes in and BHVR has shown to be competent writers who can handle this issue well. " I have literally no idea what you are basing this of fof and this is personally one of my biggest fears given their awful track record. Im also worried that at this point, we know SO little about the killer, and this is up front. Im super worried its going to be a big flashy "WE SUPPORT YOU SEE" with no actual care for the character or that it is an organic part of their back story. The biggest problem with LGBT characters is that they are LGBT characters. They should just be characters who are part of the LGBT. If "GAY" is a character trait, its being done wrong. Identity and sexual preferences should be treated as mundanely as hair color or clothes preference. Obviously it means much more to them, and you can touch on that and get into that, but it is a sign of good writing that this intrinsic part of the character isnt the entirety of the character

looking at all the backstories of the characters what would make you think the devs would create a character whose only trait would be being LGBT?

and even if it is a main trait of them: that would kind of be realistic as well, while not everybody of the LGBT community might feel the same way, there are also many who do live their life around the fact that they are queer. They may participate in parades, wear those fab clothes and only really socialize with other people of the LGBT community.

I don’t think and i don’t hope the devs will include such a character, at least not as the first char. But why should they be restricted to not create such a char if they wanted to?

  • they have confirmed that they will no longer explicitly exclude anything LGBT from the game. That statement was made via Twitter in June last year.

chapters are worked on/planned at least 9 month in advance so now is the time when we actually could see the result of this (considering they have started work on it around that time)

and yeah the new teaser might be interpreted as being LGBT for various reasons (colors, overall aesthetic theme, the way that persona tweets, their model)

We don’t need it. But the devs want to be inclusive so we will get it.

  • There are many people trying to argue against any LGBT inclusion.

Because if we get an original character with a lgbtq background as their defining trait then perhaps it's time to start confirming everyone elses, even if dare I say, they are straight. Dang man, let the fandom decide, let us us our imagination.

Who do you think you are that you can define what regular hairstyle is or regular sized eyelashes?

why shouldn’t it be overly visible? There are regular normal people that like it that way, why should they be excluded? There is no gameplay reason for such an exclusion

As I said, we don't even know if all are straight... There is barely any relationship talk in the lore anyway so why should there be LGBTIQ+ lore if straight lore isnt there either like who cares?

‘if straight lore isn’t there either‘

well it is. But even if it wasn’t, the devs have expanded the lore more and more, going deeper in normal backstories and tomes.

relationships, self-identity etc were always something that couldn’t be excluded forever without it feeling forced.

In Côté’s own words, the sexuality of killers will be left “to the fan fiction.” Sorry killer fans, maybe next time!"

Well... after Nurse and Legion this is definitely a disappointment. Hopefully they change their minds on that, because this is not equal treatment.

  • @hagling said:

they've confirmed any representation will be survivor-sided only, which honestly.. is kinda disappointing when you consider frank x julie and wraith x nurse. evil straights are valid but evil queers aren't? there's an argument to be made that we've been over-represented as villains in media and that's well and good, but if they're giving us queer survivors to balance the scales i'm totally onboard with queer killers too.

Talk about survivor, everyone starts with 7 defaults characters. Which cause most player focus their first complete perks on one of them (as me was Nea).

I think they should lock all characters except Dwight & Trapper. Other 10 characters locked, but give 90.000 shards to let new players buy any characters they want. There we have diversity of survivors.

i like that idea a lot. That way, new players could utilize perks like Visionary better, which is mostly created for inexperienced but most people that get Felix have already much experience anyway..

Thank you for twisting my words and taking what I said the completely wrong way. I never said they were the bad guys. Stop looking at everything as if it's black and white. Bad or good. Life is more nuanced than that. When I mentioned the cycle I never said it was bad and I never said it was good nor did I imply that LGBTQ are bad guys here. That's all from you. But anyway things have gotten a little off topic so let me go back to my original point.

Don't get butthurt if they don't add an LGBTQ character. And don't get butthurt if they do. Because at the end of the day it really doesn't matter what a set of pixels has attractions to in a game where it plays 0 part in.

    Yeah it doesn’t matter.

and we already know that they will add LGBT chars. So everybody has to find a way to cope with it.

"but he picks people that fit into what he wants, they need to be strong willed, hopeful, caring for other (if it’s survivor), emotional, having gone through struggles in life etc"

Not exactly. According to the wiki, "Prey for The Entity comes in the form of the Survivors, regular people who stumbled into the corrupted areas and were pulled through by The Entity, with no memory of how it had happened. Once they awaken by The Campfire, there is no escape for them anymore."

Which means, it doesn't chooses them. It takes whoever stumbled into these corrupted areas, such as the Crotus Prenn Asylum.

And according to lore, many people land in the void instead of being part of the trials because they are not emotionally fit for the entity to feast upon.

also judging by every bit of lore, all of the chars have something that make them stand out about their personality and experiences.

Everyone is talking about it on this forum so why can't I give a statement myself? It has nothing to do with caring a lot about a topic lol.

LGBTIQ+ comes with stereotypes. If you just want to mention a char is queer in an archive log entry people won't be satisfied, they want obvious gay looking chars, maybe even genderfluid, drag chars or whatever. And if they make a rupaul candidate a survivor I'm just done with the game. Killers are not a threat anyway but imagine bullying a killer in a drag outfit...

Never said you couldn’t state your opinion. But so can I.

and your claim is not true. Almost everybody asks for not stereotypical representation. I think any representation is good, especially if it is diverse. So get me a flamboyant gay femboy. But also get me some normal dude that just happens to be gay. (I am using gay here as an example, can be expanded on anything LGBT+)

just because there are stereotypes doesn’t mean every representation has be be strictly using or not using those stereotypes. People should restrict the writers that way, straight chars are not restricted to be non-stereotypical hetero as well

  • @GrimmReaper said:

History wasn't as kind as you believe. Sure there were some cultures that were more accepting than others but there were also cultures that were very unforgiving when it came to these matters. But of course it didn't start that way. That's not what I'm saying. What I am saying is that it has grown into a cycle recently. The cycle creates new homophobes and racists etc and it also exposes those who already were more than it does create.

    It doesn’t create new homophobes/racists.

no one starts to hate LGBT+ people just because they are featured heavily in some kind of media. The hate had to be there before. Maybe because of the representation you see more people speaking out against it, but that’s just because they didn’t have a reason to speak about it before.

don’t make the LGBT community the bad guys here. They just should be treated the same way as straight people. Nothing more. And nothing less.

  • The idea is not bad and has been done in other games multiple times but at its core DbD has their distinctive well-established characters.

i might not be a big fan of the written lore, but the design artists are making a pretty damn great job in creating those characters and I don’t want to miss any of that.

not every single individual will or can be included. And almost everybody can understand that. But the thing is, as long as they are not explicitly excluded it’s okay. (And yeah there may be exclusions because of gameplay reasons, eg wheelchairs.)

The representation should be a side note not a crucial part of the survivor or the Lore, because it is still a horror game not a dating sim.

To be fair I've seen more posts get riled up for it than against it. At the end of the day it doesn't matter if we do get a LGBTQ+ character or if we don't. And people shouldn't get all riled up whatever the outcome is for these new characters. We all spend more time playing matches than looking at the lore page anyway. At least that's my take on it.

I guess people see what they want to see...

in the end we will eventually get at least one confirmed LGBT chat. That’s a fact and the devs already said they want to be inclusive.

it’s pretty much the people against LGBT inclusion that care so much about this topic.

    and

being LGBT doesn’t only have to be about sex. It’s about self-identity, experiences and struggles in life, relationships etc. all those things are already a big part in DbDs lore.

I would be totally okay with a backstory only mentioning that a character is gay, but come on, we know for sure that it's not gonna happen. Look at the pictures. We are probably getting a transgender, crossdresser or something, that will be ridiculously stereotypical. I can't believe bhvr cares so much about making this game scary and at the same time creating sparkly LGBT characters that look like they're going to the gay pride. This will look like a parody and ruin the atmosphere for good.

BUT, if there's a slight chance of you being right, then that's a relief. But I kinda lost all hope at this point.

noone just becomes homophobic just because LGBT is represented ‚too much‘ in the media. They were homophobic before but because they were never confronted with it you didn’t notice.

the best way to fight homophobia is to make it seem normal, and that includes showing LGBT people in all media. That way you can fight bad stereotypes, because you can represent LGBT people with all kind of different personalities. You cannot accomplish that by only including one token gay in some niche Videogame that no one hears about.

and everything the devs have stated about being inclusive indicates they will do it how i said it, this char is only speculated to be trans by the community. And even if that turns out to be true, it’s not bad, because it very probably won’t be the only LGBT char they will introduce. They have mentioned before one char in the existing cast was created to be LGBT. And you know what? No one knows or can easily guess who that is!

also i know enough LGBT people that welcome the representation they get, because it just shows that they are normal. To explicitly exclude everything LGBT while still including heterosexuality (legions lore is shoving that down our throats btw) is not the right way.

  • @Orionbash said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1977351#Comment_1977351

The LGB population make up 7% of the world. The T less than 1%. 7%/1% of the population don't need to be in 100% of media.

yeah, and while we are at this red/Ginger hair people make up less than 1 % of people.

so Meg and Sally should be deleted from the game, there is really no reason for them to be in DbD!

also the Entity doesn’t pick randomly but he picks people that fit into what he wants, they need to be strong willed, hopeful, caring for other (if it’s survivor), emotional, having gone through struggles in life etc. LGBT people often do fit those criteria very well.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1974591#Comment_1974591

Thank god, someone I agree with!

I'm gay too, and I know for a fact that all the attention the media draw on LGBT people is causing more damage than it's doing any good. SJWs ignore that, but it's a fact that for the past two years homophobia has increased for the first time in decades!! Cause people are annoyed at all the LGBTQ propaganda every show, every series and every game are forcing into their faces.

I'm gay but it's a DETAIL, I'm so much more than that, and so is most of the gay people. I just want to live a normal life without being exposed or turned into a stereotype just for the sake of companies making more money.

Using gay people by creating stereotypical characters just to make money and improving oneself's reputation, that is homophobic. We're not objects that people can use for attention or cash. We're normal people like straight people, and we don't want this stupid spotlight. Just stop this LGBTQ trend and let us live normally already!

“We are normal people like straight people“

that’s exactly the point? If multiple straight relationships are mentioned then why shouldn’t there be anything LGBT in it? Just including a text passage about two men in a relationships doesn’t shine a spotlight on it.

there is harmful representation, but for all we know, BHVR will not do that

  • @Victor_hensley said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1977206#Comment_1977206

While what you said may be the idea the devs might have, but another possibility is that the devs said they WANT to add an LGBT+ character, they didn't straight up confirmed it. I see those colors everywhere, wherever it's K-pop (the inspiration the devs seem to have with this chapter) some gaming youtube channel, most people that record themselves who have bright lights around them usually use the typical neon colors that you see on stuff like keyboards. It's used because it's (in theory) appealing to the eyes.

I'm not discrediting anyone, I just don't want people think that it is 100% true, AKA, it's fine for people to put ideas in their head, but I don't want anyone to cement it into their heads as fact, because if it turns out to be something different, then people will be very disappointed, or even mad at something that the devs didn't even (fully) promised.

(I'm not against anyone in the LGBT+ community, I want those people to be represented as well, but it's healthy to always keep an opened mind to things, instead of building it up to unrealistic expectations that no human can achieve easily)

Oh yeah I get what you mean. I don’t expect that char to be LGBT either. I wouldn’t be surprised if they turned out to be but it’s whatever for me.

people are just speculating about the Char, mostly mentioned KPop idol, hacker, DJ, cosplayer, anime fan and LGBT. Only the LGBT speculation turned out to be so controversial though.

  • @crowbarman said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1977161#Comment_1977161

First, many don't mention relationships at all (and even a man marrying a woman doesn't rule out all sexual identity scenerios) but something tells me you won't be satisfied with a single sentence that says 'Bob's boyfriend came home to find the house a wreck' and that's it. Because almost none of the character lore makes the relationship any kind of focus.

That is exactly how most people want them to handle LGBT inclusion though.

  • @kingcarl2012 said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1977141#Comment_1977141

I will just jump straight to my end point here.

As it stands character sexuality and gender identity is vague and not definitive, which i think is a good thing it lets anyone create their own identity for any character. I can say that Nea is trans, Dwight is gay, or Kate is a lesbian and i cant be proven wrong because it is my belief and there is no actual definitive evidence to prove that assessment wrong. We can disagree and have a discussion but in the end each person decides their interpretation of each character. This is actually a very inclusive way of doing things.

If they now change pace (and im not saying they cant), they are going to be creating a character that some people will feel alienated from because they lose that ability to craft that character identity that they have been able to with other characters.

Basically i would say that a policy of vague inclusivity is better than certain alienation.

    Yeah right

in my headcanon Sally, the Nurse is lesbian!

oh wait. Seems like your argument doesn’t hold for every char.

and nobody asked for explicit definition of the sexuality of every single character. People are generally just asking for LGBT+ to not be excluded and be handeled just like straight relationships have been handeled since the beginning.

  • @Victor_hensley said:

Let me remind you, people are calling this person part of the LGBT+ community because this person is a little bit larger than usual, and have a slightly smaller chest size, despite NOTHING being confirmed.

No? People speculate the char might be LGBT because the colors in the teasers match up with certain colors that represent bisexuality or transsexuals AND because there is an LGBT+ char being confirmed to come which was stated by the devs in June AND because of what you said.

    but it’s only speculation..

  • @JimboMason said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1977071#Comment_1977071

Before these teasers came out, I would see people complaining about the lack of inclusiveness on all of their social media platforms, and, although I won't say names, certain people would constantly be barraging some of the devs of the game. Also colorblind was something that should've been incorporated long ago, and it was even evident that some of Behaviour caved in due to pressure from the community.

Complaining isn’t harassment. People complain about any and every thing in this game all the time.

bring evidence if you make such bold claims.

and LGBT+ inclusion should have been in the game since introduction of Nurse and her lore, just like how colorblind mode should have been incorporated sooner

No one talked to you here. You joined this explicit discussion freely so your examples don’t have real similarity. And you also don’t participate in almost every other discussion.

yeah, that is showing me that you cared at least a little bit.

Again it doesn't matter to me I'm not going to be lying in bed awake and trembling over what others believe on things that don't exist and I haven't called anyone out so that's a lie. It was innocent rhetorical question.

You didn’t call people that care for sexuality of videogame characters strange?

Ok perfect, let's take a look at David's main lore (not the tome) first. For reference, i'm using the wiki: https://deadbydaylight.fandom.com/wiki/David_King

The single child of a wealthy family, David King seemed destined for greatness. While growing up in Manchester, he demonstrated serious potential in both sports and academics, and with his family connections, all doors were open to him. He could have succeeded at anything, if it weren't for his combative nature. David lived for the adrenaline rush of a good fight and would go out of his way to get into one.

His robustness and athletic abilities led him to rugby, where he could cut loose and really cause a ruckus. King excelled and gained a reputation as a promising, if somewhat reckless, rookie. His meteoric rise came to an abrupt end when he lost his temper and assaulted a referee, earning himself a lifetime ban from the league and cutting short what most people assumed was going to be a long, successful career. King was unconcerned; money was no issue, so he took it as an early retirement and focused on other fun things to do.

Free from the constraints of a career and enabled by the wealth of his family, David King spent most of his time at the pub, drinking, watching games, and getting into fights. Some might say he was wasting his life away. Not many people knew that he was an occasional "debt collector" or that he fought in clandestine bare-knuckle fight clubs.

When David King stopped showing up at the pub, the few friends he still had were not surprised. They figured he had finally picked a fight with someone stronger than he was. In a way, they were right.

Nothing here indicates that he is straight, it comes from the tomes here: https://deadbydaylight.fandom.com/wiki/Tome_II_-_Reckoning#David_King:_Manchester_Mash-Up

Now, looking at the short bit of lore above, what do we know about David?:

    • He doesn't have any brothers or sisters
    • He comes from a wealthy family.
    • He is from Manchester.
    • He is very athletic and also smart.
    • He is aggressive and has an anger problem.
    • He is an adrenaline junkie.
    • He played rugby.
    • He once assaulted a ref during a game and because of that ended his career
    • Afterwards he started getting into fights on the street and in clubs.

now, unless i'm missing it, i don't see anything that indicates that he is straight, either here, or in the tome.

Those might all not be heterosexual (and others are Felix and Legion), but it doesn’t change the fact that there are multiple heterosexual relationships featured while everything remotely LGBT+ is absent.

For Ace it is also only implied in cosmetic descriptions.

and people are mostly asking for and expecting LGBT inclusion just like those mentioned heterosexual relationship inclusions. No one asks for explicit description of the homosexuality of a character.

  • They weren’t though.

and even if they were. Doesn’t matter. Look at colorblind mode, people are saying BHVR only adds it because they are pressured (which is also not true, they always said they would like to add it but it wasn’t a priority before). Doesn’t change the fact that it needs to be added.

What I care about is false assumptions. When you assume I have any sort of problem because I ask as you say "rhetorical" questions that is when I start to care when I am having someone who doesn't know me try to write my biography. It is not strange for someone who exists in reality to "care" when someone else who exist in reality make assumptions.

You said yourself you didn’t expect an answer though, that’s why i called it a rhetorical question.

and maybe I have used a wrong word with ‚problem‘, but it does matter to you how others see their pixel characters. Otherwise you wouldn’t have felt the need to ask that question in the first place. And you have stated that you find it strange. That’s what I meant with ‚problem‘, I didn’t mean to use that to make an assumption and apologize for that. (I am not a native English speaker so sometimes I use simplified words)

but as I have said before: there is really no need to call out others for being strange just because they care about fictional characters that already have rich and deep backstories. (Not saying anything about the quality of those backstories, I don’t care that much about lore in DbD, but that doesn’t change the fact it is already there and gets expanded more and more)

Yes of course if I find it strange for someone to care about the non existent things video game characters get up to it means I have "problem"

I mean, you are the one caring about what other people care about even if it is not any of your business. Isn’t that strange as well?

those people don’t hurt you or affect you. You don’t need to understand them. Who are you to just join a conversation/discussion and question people like that? They care about it. You know they care about it. What’s the matter with that? (I explicitly didn’t use the word ‚problem‘ so you don’t have to focus on that any more)

    no I don't

Saw fits in DBD because its a slasher flick,

Demogorgon fits in DBD because in the series it was already the minion of a shadow monster so how is the entity different?

Silent hill was a stupid premise to begin with, because traffic cone head is just the protagonists own guilt and self loathing made manifest, but hey its still beholden to some higher darkness albeit the darkness in the protagonist's head, so it fits in DBD.

From a hive building behaviourally insectiod alien race, what is its motivation to hook survivors in service of the entity? It makes no sense and doesn't fit themtaically in what DBD has crafted.

Yes you could horse shoe it in but it would feel forced, just by the very nature of how in depth they have built up the xenomorph in terms of backstory.

You are welcome to disagree but do better than that.

Many people argued against those franchises though, even if not you personally.

and aren’t the Aliens kind of controlled by their Queen? It is hivemind-like after all and the Entity has surely the power to manipulate a Xenomorph to do what it wants. Those aliens are pretty intelligent and can be manipulated after all..
