Why should someone that is winning surrender?
Because the opponents are too scared to do the objective?
Someone that isn't contributing to the match deserves a penalty
They shouldn't. The killer finding the survivor is part of their objective too. If they fail to do this, the survivors shouldn't be able to be reported and penalized for it. Add the surrender option. Problem solved.

If survivors aren't touching gens (or doing anything worthwhile) for a long period of time, then that is holding the game hostage
If I have to keep moving to keep crows from spawning on my head and the killer can't find me on a map that has boundaries thats not my problem. I don't do this for the record. The killer always finds me or someone eventually. Even that one guy who spends the entire match slow walking between lockers. Yes even they get found eventually.
Surrender option is the answer to this in my opinion.

Why should a Killer (Such as in OP's example) surrender when they've basically won already which is typically when this kind of hostage taking occurs
When it becomes clear you can't win as a survivor, you shouldn't try to drag the match out like the survivors in his video did.
The OP had no reason to surrender. They found the survivors and won. Hence they did not take the game hostage as the OP said. A surrender option would give killers who can't find survivors in a certain time frame the ability to concede and move on to the next match without a leaver penalty. The surrender option can become available every time around 10 minutes goes by and no interaction between survivors and killers happens. I don't see why adding a surrender option wouldn't be a good way to approach this rather than potentially penalizing survivors for evading the killer for too long.

Nobody's saying it's an epidemic though
They just pointed out that people who intentionally go out of their way to not play the game and waste everyone's time can get banned for doing it repeatedly
If you play DBD normally it will never impact you. Ever
This isn't a problem for me. I interact with the killer every match. I'm just giving my opinion on the idea of survivors evading the killer for too long being considered holding the game hostage. This, in my opinion, is freaking ridiculous. Add a surrender option for killers. Problem solved and no one gets banned.

You really aren't getting the point
Or you're completely ignoring it
Either way I'm gonna repeat it once more:
Intentionally going into a match as a role and ignoring your primary objective just to waste the other sides time is not okay and should be something that is punished. Finding survivors normally isn't super hard because not everybody runs 4 stealth perks and doesn't touch a generator ONCE during a match
I'll break it down as simple as I possibly can:
Survivors do generators, Killer check generators = Killer find survivors and chase. Normal gameplay
Not
Survivors never touch generators, Killer wander around empty map for 10 minutes until they get lucky
Survivors hiding when they need to isn't the problem, literally nobody is saying that.
Oh I'm not ignoring what you're saying. I'm just saying I find it completely ridiculous. And AGAIN the answer to this is not to report or potentially penalize survivors for doing it. The answer (in my opinion) is to add a surrender option so people can play how they want in these situations without fear of getting banned. I have literally never once in any of my matches or any matches I have seen witnessed survivors evade the killer for long periods of time (15+ minutes for example). If it has happened, its not happening so much that its a freaking epidemic in the game. Be reasonable please.

Actually survivors do hold power over the game state
If nobody does gens but doesn't get found and hooked then the game literally cannot end. Stealh is a means to avoid dying but doing generators is the survivors primary objective. If you're not doing gens or hell even trying to do gens, you're not progressing the game state
Blaming the killer for survivors hiding is also such an ignorant way to dismiss the problem - It's not about finding or not finding the survivors. It's about how they are simply wasting your time and not even trying to progress the game.
Killers can progress the game too by finding survivors. I'm sorry but I'm not convinced that this is in any way a problem so big that it has to be considered taking the game hostage. The survivors would ALWAYS have to prevent the crows from spawning. That requires a lot of movement with only mere seconds (I think?) of being idle. If a match happens now and then that the killer is unable to find anyone for a long time that doesn't mean its causing the game to be unplayable for the masses. And again, this is why a SURRENDER option needs to be added to both sides, or the very least to killers. The bias in opinions here on this is insane.

@Brokenbones said:
I've seen squads (Full 4 mans) set out to do this kind of thing from the start
They burn maps like Yamaoka or RPD and put on full stealth builds; Calm Spirit, Distortion, Lightweight, Urban, Spine chill - mixtures of all the usual stealth perks and then they simply just hide from the start. No touching gens, no chases nothing
When you find one they just give up and let you kill them.
Luckily for me, the times I've came across these groups I was running Whispers 😎
And the idea here is because the killer can't see survivor perks before the match its suddenly a potential problem? And again, how often do people do this? If there are perks in the game that are literally revolved around hiding from the killer then it shouldn't be reportable for doing this for prolonged periods of time. This is a killer issue, not a survivor issue. It would be better to have a surrender option on both sides for situations like this then potentially penalizing someone for playing the game how they want with stealth perks. I'm a bit boiled over about this.

"But doesn't get found."
Again, 4 survivors aren't going to hide from a killer forever. Forcing them to do gens at the risk of getting reported for "holding the game hostage" goes against what I consider a fundamental part of a horror game which is HIDING from the killer. We have lockers in the game. We have crows in the game. Crows will spawn on any survivor that doesn't keep moving and if a survivor is moving its only a matter of time before the killer finds them. I've never had a match where anyone was able to hide from the killer for a half hour or longer. I think I've had maybe 5 matches that maybe lasted that long due to 3 gen but never because someone hid that long from the killer. I completely disagree with this. They can recognize whatever they want as however they see it, and me as a customer can criticize it as a form of feedback. I just don't how this is a major problem so much so that it needs to be recognized as holding the game hostage.
-
Right... and you do realize its a bit unreasonable to think survivors have any kind of major power over the ability of the killer to hold the game hostage. Want to know why? Killers are immune to damage. Survivors are not. If a survivor manages to hide from the killer well enough to not be found by them (which I thought was a fundamental part of the game) then thats honestly the killer's fault and well played on the survivor part. The fact that they think a survivor crouching in corners (a place where killers can go too by the way) to "hold the game hostage" is pretty lame in my opinion. I completely disagree with this and think they are dead wrong on that take.
-
Survivors can't hold a game hostage. They can only hide until you eventually find them. Matches like this are why there is constant tension between survivors and killers.

How about getting mow down by a chainsaw?
There can be exceptions to power attacks. Regular M1s and grabs shouldn't be enough to force a full bleed out if left on the ground.
-
I never P3 any character before because I always felt the bloody clothes reward for doing it wasn't a good enough reason to do it. The incentive for me was never enough so I just keep all my survivors at P1.

Oh, base kit unbreakable. Nothing could possibly go wrong with giving survivors one of their strongest perks for free.
If you don't like being bled out, alt tab. I've been going against a spare of bizzare knock out plagues lately. I just go watch a video or something.
Not base kit unbreakable. It would have to be more time than unbreakable would get you up in. This is just for the killers who think leaving you on the ground for the entire bleed out and think its Ok to do that. I figured that was easily discerned as my point in my post.

This is why I've always argued that if a killer leaves a survivor on the ground for too long they should naturally recover instead of just bleeding out to death. Its never made sense to me that a survivor can get grabbed off something, dropped and then bleed to death.

-
They don't need an anti boon perk, but I think they are getting one because they complained about boon totems long enough to spark a response to them. Survivors can never really have anything too good for a long period of time before killer mains see it as the reason why they are denied fun in this game.
Also hi Sluzzy! Some people in the past thought I was you here on the forums. I guess we share similar opinions on game mechanics. 😅

Being able not to make it to a hook or an important hook goes a long way. Nerf this, it's so annoying and unfair being able to get a hook.
Boil over has been mostly ineffective for me even with an entire loadout around wiggling off the killer. It happens so infrequently for me that when it does I'm shocked I even made it. If a survivor using this perk wiggled off, you probably downed them in a bad spot that gave them the time they needed.
-
Theres a reason why Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter doesn't exist.

That its possible to get a 1k on a survivor who uses dead hard, hence dead hard is fine how it is.
-
Yea it sucks when you're trying to tell someone how fun the match was when it comes across as looking like you just cussed them out. The chat censor is something else.
-
Starting every match with 3 broken and injured survivors would become the norm for solo que players and for killers they'd start them with 4 broken survivors which could lead to even shorter matches. Besides, it looks like killer mains wouldn't accept any less than the complete removal of the perk.

The soul of the original game is long dead, which is the fate of any large scale IP that lasts this long, as new hands get control of the project and/or old hands tire.
The game itself in terms of players? Waning, but far from dying, and likely about to see a surge in the coming weeks/months.
I've seen this happen to other games over the years. Its freaking disheartening as hell. Great games should never abandon their roots.

I found a new "exploit" by a team of boil overing no mither Steves that basically go to a house where there is a god window at the end that u only have the option to let it slug.
Fix it adding hooks next to the building not close.
I think I know the window you're referring to and I'm pretty sure there is a hook in that house that boil over very conveniently hides to the killer as they attempt to take you out of the house. Its not an exploit by any means. Its simply survivors knowing the map and using certain perks to take advantage of it.

While I don't think it'll ever drop to 0 as the OP suggested, it is fair for people to say and think that the player count doesn't seem that great. When you have someone on the anniversary stream mention 50 million players for the game and yet players experience long wait times for matches its not hard to understand how people may question those numbers.
I mean they may think that, but at the same time we know that the queue time differs depending on the day of time and what server you're on, as for the 50 million bit, i think it's more in terms of how many people have played during DBD's entire lifespan as a game in total, but that's just a guess really.
As I mentioned above, DBD may not be appealing to the same number of people as it once did, so the question if that is true is, why? What has changed that has caused less people to be interested in the game in recent time? Is DBD appealing to a wider and more diverse audience and if not, then why not? Did more, less or the same amount of people find interest in DBD when they started incorporating representation elements into the game?
I honestly don't think there is a single answer as to why people are in general drawn to DBD, why they'd leave DBD or even why they return to DBD and it can be of many different reasons that varies from both outside and inside the game that can cause them to do any of them.
I'd be interested to see some data on that. I could check the steam charts but DBD is on multiple platforms so I'd need to see overall data to get a better picture.
I don't think any stats would show specifics as to why people come and go, but it definitely would be interesting to check for alot of reasons other than the total current active playercount cross all platforms itself.
All fair points. I have noticed que times are different based on the time of day. I usually play late at night and for me on any given day of the week the que times vary between a couple minutes to sometimes upwards of 10 minutes or more. I figured night time would be prime time for a game like DBD given its horror themes. I'm not sure how the que times are during the day or early mornings.
I think DBD appeals to a lot of people just on the basis of its uniqueness and theme. Content I think is the biggest factor on bringing in new and returning people to the game. Even still, when companies do things with their product (like the representation element I mentioned), its sure to have mixed responses as we have seen. Whatever the reason may be for someone disagreeing with things like this, it can be a deterrent for many people. It can also appeal to a lot of people. The question to ask after doing something like this and seeing the response is, was it good for the product's future?
The stats from the charts only show numbers. There would need to be surveys or an examination of feedback based around whatever they did for the game at any given time to connect the reasons with the data and even still there could be speculation. Even still, seeing public reaction to things is data in and of itself and if there is negative public reaction to something and also numbers going down, I think its safe to come to some conclusions there.
-
@Smoe said:
You claim playercount is dropping like flies yet steam chart numbers has been fluctuating between -300 & -500 for the entire month of may. Hell it's currently sitting on -19.2
Also the playerbase will never drop to 0 completely because there are people who will always play DBD no matter what, so it will never go below a certain point.
While I don't think it'll ever drop to 0 as the OP suggested, it is fair for people to say and think that the player count doesn't seem that great. Hey I watched the anniversary stream and I heard 50 million people play (have played?) this game so I don't see how the player count can be dropping. Maybe DBD just doesn't appeal to as many people as it used to.
-
I used dead hard once for a survivor challenge. Other than that I can't recall the last time I used it after I dropped it a year ago. I think the perk works when it works and it works when you use it right. Dead hard has screwed me over more times than it has helped.

Gosh theres so much you can do with Wesker. First I think he absolutely MUST have voice lines. Wesker has some super iconic voice lines from both the games and the RE movies. Maybe they can give him some unique voice lines for RE chapter character interactions. I personally would like every match that has Wesker as a killer start with him saying "You should've brought more." I freaking love that line from the movie. As far as how he plays, I'm not sure what the best approach there would be. Do they want to keep him human form Wesker or have a progression power where he mutates into something more dangerous over time? Maybe it'll be a combination of different iterations of Wesker put into 1 character for DBD. One thing that absolutely has to happen is he has to yell out CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIS every time Chris opens an exit gate. 🤣

Hey I don’t see that as a bad thing as those were the coolest looking lobbies Lmao. I would chose RDP tho but maybe the silent hill lobby would change my Mind
It was the music also that really got me attached to the Silent Hill lobby and chapter. Hearing that eerie Silent Hill music combined with DBD's theme was just amazing. The art and sound departments for DBD are spot on. I really hope we can personalize lobbies one day.

It would be Silent Hill and RPD on an endless rotation. Maybe some other ones too. Its been so long I can't really remember them all.
-
I do think its too much of a fundamental change to the game. Its definitely going to make the game different and effect how many killers play the game. Moris should always be an optional thing and I don't think the only option for it not to happen should be don't touch the last survivor.
-
I hope not. I love the map as it is right now and hearing the map will be reworked was rather sad news for me.
-
Project W. I had never been more excited to play DBD than when the Resident Evil chapter was revealed and eventually went live. Right now I am just waiting for more information to be released on Project W. I can't wait to see that sweet RE themed lobby.
-
I feel bad for all the people who don't get this. Yes please add HUNK to DBD. I think it would be hilarious.
-
I'd buy auric cells for a Code Veronica Claire skin! I think it would be fine if they just made it another skin for Jill, but I'm also not against Claire becoming a separate character either.
-
This was pretty interesting when they mentioned the finisher mori in the stream. Its certainly going to change how survivors act and react in exit gates and after doors are powered. It seems like the whole picking survivors up and carrying them to hatch won't be a thing anymore from what I understand. Maybe killers can get a prompt to spare the last survivor so they can choose what they want to do. In that case, the last survivor will never know what the killer will choose and it would make the situation more thrilling.
-
Wesker and he MUST have a voice line at the start of every match that says "You should've brought more."
-
This was the best part of the anniversary stream. I can't wait for this to go live.
-
This isn't a victory! I love this map! People just didn't really give it a chance.

I am playing DbD for Freddy, Ghostface, Nemesis, Jill, Leon, Cheryl etc. I would care less if they have not those characters. Last year we had 3 good licenses. If they start this year with original, anniversary will flop.
I do think it is more risky with original ideas but not impossible. Yui's chapter comes to mind. The theme was awesome and the characters were very well received. I get Yui in almost every match since her chapter released. I think that is a huge success for an original idea chapter.

Well i really hope same. Anniversary needs to bring big license to game. If they gave us original, they will lose more players. Originals won't make people back to game.
I will say the Resident Evil chapter had me more excited to play DBD than I ever had been before. I was so happy when that happened and purchased the DLC the very moment it became available. Big chapter reveals are always super interesting and will bring players in.
