If the toxicity is getting to you...then yes you're getting too old for this game. Checkers might be more your style.
I gotta say I think it's the opposite- the older you get, the less you worry about what other ppl are doing.
Those players playing clickity-clack on flashlight, or t-bagging at the gates? Listen sweet summer children, when I have a mortgage to pay and a toddler screaming because I gave them the WRONG color of goldfish crackers...you're not even blipping on my radar.
-
I love this question, because it's a good reminder that both sides are necessary to make the game worth playing.
Personally, my favorite matches are when the Killer is playful. After sweat matches or failing a challenge, I just enjoy coming across a Killer that does bonkers #########.
Miss a hit? Throw a temper tantrum by turning in circles.
Have a survivor point at you accusingly? Shake your head like they hurt your feelings and go chase another.
I love when it's a Ghostface and we can face off spamming crouch.
This is just me, and I know it can be hard to communicate intent between the two sides. But when they align...*sigh* it's beautiful.

@Mushwin I feel like that picture is the equivalent of an Ebony Mori ๐
######### snax, I've just been MORI'D by People of Walmart!

Sorry. My mind stuttered and wandered off at the part about survivors striking the D ๐
But I'm quite sure the rest of your points were solid.

I completely forgot about Autolycus! ๐ I would slam that insta-buy button immediately! Thanks for the memories.
Edit: I think he's the King of Thieves. Hail to the King, baby!

@ScienceGirl Welcome :) Glad you decided to join us in the forums and in the Fog! My favorite survivor is probably Ace or Cheryl.

Add escape as the Obsession in one trial.
I think someone mentioned using the perk 'For The People' at the exit gates for the Obsession challenge. As long as the Killer isn't on your heels trying to chase you off the Entity's Lawn, should be viable.
-
I love the random jump scares the most- the first time I finished a gen and turned around, only to have a Myers inches away and staring at me silently- I had to change my pants.
Also the Lore, I love slowly unraveling bits and pieces of backstory.

Because PS4 is full of potatoes. Before Cross-Play I only ever got boosted Red ranks in my matches and every time, they'd stand in a corner and Self-Care or refuse to be healed so they could go do it themselves. I even ran Empathy for a while to try help people but nope. It got to a point I stopped healing people because they were just making zero effort to do anything but self-care. With Cross-Play I still see it from some PC players and Xbox/Switch, but far far less.
@Mikeasaurus You are incorrect, I am clearly a hotdog! But to your point, I HAVE been noticing a lot of survivors running away to do SC. I run after them anyway, screaming into the ether, 'Let me HEAL YOU! I NEED POINTS TO PIP!'
-
Never gonna give it up, coz it never let's me down. Never tells lies or deserts me. So you will have to pry Kindred from my cold, dead hands.

You know damn well survivors don't read tutorials...
@PigMainBigBrain I disagree! I ReAd dem GuD!
Seriously though, some things just take time to click. You can read all the tutorials you want, but it can take awhile to reach that A-Ha! moment, especially if a skill isn't naturally in your wheelhouse. Like I don't even need the Killer to mind game me, I mind game myself right into a sweet struggle snuggle.
-
@dugman That is actually a really helpful example to give perspective on the rank system. Thank you! Hopefully it helps ppl chill out about it, it did for me.

Basement trapper for sure, especially with that trap that downs you if you untrap yourself
@stoudbaker Lol, I JUST got out of a match like this! Running Kindred and could see Trapper using basement hooks to bait team mates while laying traps. It's shocking, he got 3K and I escaped by finding Hatch.
Some ppl gotta be heroes and some of us just gotta be...SURVIVORS.
-
I'm curious about this as well...I think getting better ranking demands more and more interaction with the Killer (evasion/looping) the farther you get, but I'm not sure about absolute stats ๐ค
I'm rank 13 and I just sabotaged 2 hooks, did about 3 gens and a totem, and topped it off with a zero hook Hatch escape...and safety pipped -_-
-
So this isn't as obvious as you would think, but working on situational awareness.
On a gen? Have your head on a swivel, pivoting your surroundings. You can pick up stealth killer tells (like the Wraith's distortion), or at least glimpse the Killer and start looking at escape routes should they come your way.
Also, actively listening- a lot of times you can HEAR the Killer before you see them and this is valuable because:
1.) You can tell which killer it is and possibly adjust your playstyle.
2.) Gauging proximity- how close/far are they from your position.

The thing you have to understand though is survivors are all the same pallet, they all play the same except with a variation of perks.....thats it!
Killers on the other hand all understand that every single one of them plays differently, has different rule sets, strong points, and obvious weaknesses. I think from a psychological perspective, BHVR has unknowingly created a base of players on survivor side who literally can not adjust and play differently depending on the situation. Game in game out, they're used to doing the same things, If you're playing killer as soon as you move your character select to another killer, you're playing an entirely different game because they're all so significantly different.
I'm not sure how BHVR can solve it other than what they've already been doing is outright giving tutorials and full on tells as to who the killer is and what to do. But at the same time, the more information they give, the more horror it takes away from the game, and the more it degrades the state of the game over time and while this is great for solo survivors it inadvertently also buffs SWF groups which the balance team doesn't even touch with a 10 foot pole because they would have to gut so many systems to balance around SWF completely ruining the solo survivor experience to the point where the game is completely unfair.
So if they shift toward SWF and buffing killers the game dies because its brokenly unfair for survivors.
If they shift balance toward solo, the game dies because its brokenly unfair and too much on the side of survivors.
Thats all it boils down to.
And if people can't change their playstyle BHVR needs to adjust things so you have no choice, or risk the game becoming a stagnant loop where everything is the same. And for an A-Symmetrical game thats a terrible hill to die on.
@PigMainBigBrain I can see where you're coming from, change Killer and it FORCES a playstyle change. And I agree that Survivors are only a variation of Perks- but I disagree all Survivors play the same.
If a survivor is self-aware enough, they'll recognize their weaknesses and they'll make a build out of perks to compensate. For example, I feel the decisions I make in match are only as good as the information I have, so I use Kindred and Spine Chill a lot. So I have an information playstyle. But there's stealth, offensive, team focused, etc. It really just the survivor's main objective/weaknesses that determine the differences in playstyle.
That's just how I see it, but it's definitely more pronounced difference for Killers.
-
Thanks for the advice and insight for all who shared. I did think there might be some use for it with Stealth Killers paired with Discordance. But it loses it's utility when you're literally standing around WAITING for the gen to pop before going for the chase. Meanwhile, other survivors can be doing bones and other gens.
So yeah, I passed on it ๐

Knowing this forum, I thought many people will disagree with me.
But prestiging characters only for a bloody outfit, flexing on others and having to pay more bloodpoints for items later (because rarer items become more frequent) is truly really worthless and has no purpose.
Let me also mention you lose all your items and perks in the process.
So I did not realize it strips you of your Perks if you Presteige! I thought it let you start again to try and get the perks you missed/skipped the first go-round. This info is really a bummer and makes me feel like a slave to the RNG ๐ค
-
@Kilmeran Have you gotten any matches as Pig where you get snoot boops?! ๐
-
How do you know it was Killer entitlement and not bait? I had to learn the hard way that sometimes it's not the Killer that outplays you, but the team's altruism. It's nice when you can make it out as a team, but that mentality can very quickly turn a 1K into a 4K.
-
Does rank make a difference? I don't really get salt but I also haven't broken yellow rank for Killer yet. Are the salty tears more prevalent once you hit red/purple ranks? ๐ง๐ญ
-
Also, if they ever bring in Baby Shark as a licensed killer, I'd main them in a second. The psychological trauma they would inflict on people who have little kids would be ASTOUNDING.
Can't you just hear the quiet Baby Shark lullaby, the 'doo-doo-doo', echoing in the distance???
-
Ghostface or Wraith. I like to think I provide the underappreciated service of catharsis through jump scares.
-
I started with Cheryl because I love the Silent Hill series, but I find myself maining Ace recently. I love him in his tux, looking like a snack, ready to con your gramma ๐
-
When I get frustrated I will initiate a meme match, Killer or Survivor, doesn't matter. It's just a good way to lighten the mood and have fun with other players.
I had a Ghostface running at me and I pointed at him to 'hold up'. He stopped, looked back at me, and we proceeded to crouch back and forth at each other. He left me alone the rest of the match until I was the last survivor and Mori'd me- wasn't even mad :D

I play on PS4 and all this makes me very glad I picked up the game about 2 months ago- no where to go now but up, lol.

@DBD_Pinhead said:
Seeing as how my last post got deleted I'll say it again: SURVIVORS DESERVE EVERYTHING THEY GET IN TOXICITY BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO PROBLEMS DISHING IT OUT FOR NO REASON. Especially on console. The easiest thing to do is turn off messages for this game (which is sad because they can't help themselves) and if you feel like fighting fire with fire do it. The mods might not like hearing the truth but such things hurt.
@DBD_Pinhead Please don't treat all survivors as toxic because that is a blanket statement with zero validity. I play BOTH sides but tend towards survivor. I have never t-bagged, never clicked my flashlight, in fact I will occasionally have fun back and forth with Killers. I ALSO make it a point to message Killers who did well and thank them for the game- get this- even when they KILL ME.
The flipside is seeing plenty of toxic Killer behavior, so when I DO play Killer, I will often give the last survivor Hatch/Escape, PROVIDED they played an honest game without being toxic.
Toxic survivors tend to be toxic Killers, too. And, unfortunately toxic IRL.
-
Yeah, there are some challenges in the Tome that make me consider just buying a tier in the Rift. I've been working on Meg's Vault challenge for about 2 days and I just had to move on. If you stop having fun, what's the point? ๐คทโโ๏ธ
-
From playing survivor, I've seen more 4K Ghostface than Myers. If I see with Kindred it's Ghostface, I start to sweat immediately, lol. And I ADORE Ghostface, he's legitimately the only Killer that's gotten a jump scare on me with his creepy af ability to crouch and lean forward to try and stalk. Ngl, he's the main reason I keep Spine Chill on most of my builds, b/c his speed really makes him a threat. Sprint Burst and I usually lose Myers ๐คทโโ๏ธ
-
Stuff I've seen Killers do to communicate:
Not attack but keep smacking a generator- they WANT you to finish the generator.
If you are last survivor and NOT struggling during carry they will smack random things without taking you to hook- they want you to struggle to escape.
If you are last survivor and ARE struggling during carry, they turn in circles or do weird actions while not taking you to the hook- they want you to STOP struggling so they can give you sympathy Hatch.
As an aside- when I play Survivor and I give 2 slow crouches at the Exit, I'm saying, 'Thanks for the good game'.
-
So I have recently bought the rest of the dlc and was getting BBQ immediately in my Lvl 1 Killers. Ones I'd leveled to at least 15 previously- no dice.
I've noticed it's exactly the same with survivor perks I've gotten from the Shrine.
-
I started out solo q survivor and found that the Killers I messaged after game were pretty receptive to trying a few swf matches with me. There's probably lots of killer mains who want to give swf a try, why not try friend requesting/messaging the non-toxic ones you meet in match?
-
@Deathslinger For sure! It's easy to forget to check the shrine so I really appreciate the PSAs ๐

@johnmwarner Bless your sweet soul ๐ฅบ TY!

What about the thumbs up/down button? Does it do anything atm? I could see this also being abused, but less impactful. What about maybe an optional thumbs up, then? It could even encourage better sportsmanship if incentivized by maybe limited cosmetics or shards ๐คทโโ๏ธ

If I have nothing nice to say after a game, I say nothing at all. What I WILL occasionally do is message the Killer if they've gotten steamrolled or had a bunch of DCs.
I try and find a specific thing to compliment so they know I'm not being sarcastic with GG, or empathize with what a dumpster fire the match was and hope their next one is better.
I do this for two reasons:
1.) I've had those matches when I play Killer and it's disheartening. I get so many DCs when survivors see I'm Ghostface :(
2.) I can't FORCE anyone not to pass on toxicity to the next match, but sometimes having someone else acknowledge it was a toxic game de-escalates the situation.
-
I've had that problem a couple matches, can't recall if I had any extras equipped. But not only did skill checks become invisible, couldn't interact with chests, either.
-
There's always going to be trolls wherever you go. Maybe just turn off notifications if it really becomes triggering.
-
I've been using Ghostface recently when I play as Killer. Almost a DC every . single. time.
-
I've seen a LOT of DCs the last couple days, really weird. I don't know if it's b/c of Killer or map, but it really sucks. Had a match today against a Huntress with 2 early DCs...that was excruciating ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
I've DC'd only once, and it was because I was permanently frozen in the crouch position- couldn't run, work gens, zilch ๐ฌ
-
I agree with the spirit of your message, but I think ppl give that info as context for their comments/input. It helps avoid assumptions or questions when it comes to topic discussion.
-
@Obsessed_Obsession I had no idea Dwight could look like that *heavy breathing*
I might have to become a Professor Dwight main ๐
-
I think you're going to lose players with ADD (me included)...I agree shaking things up would be great, but all that extra stuff would turn me into a confused potato doing endless 360 spins all game ๐ฌ
-
I'd wondered if it was, or if devs were doing something in the background. I went from similar rank survivor/killer lobbies, to a mix of green/purple with the occasional red rank thrown in (I'm yellow rank).
-
I LOVE the lore. A big draw for me is a good story, and while storytelling isn't really the heart of DBD, I appreciate getting characters with backstories. It gives the game a greater depth that makes it more immersive.
-
SWF isn't inherently toxic.
For perspective, I'm almost 2 months playing and EVERY person I SWF with is someone I met in lobby or a Killer I messaged after a match to send a compliment/friendly GG.
I learn something new when I SWF. These are other players in the DBD community who willingly play with a self-confessed newbie and share their knowledge with me. For that I'm truly appreciative because it's not a game you easily pick up, and to hear ppl constantly lump SWF into toxic trolls does a disservice to those players trying to help.
-
It's not just perks, prestige and BP that are part of the grind, either. It's all the moving parts of survivor vs killer mechanics, emblem system, hell it has its own jargon and perceived rules of proper etiquette!
Thats a lot for a new player to be exposed to at once. The ones who want to stick with it will because they probably enjoy a thorough challenge or they're drowning in sunk cost fallacy.
Just my opinion ๐คทโโ๏ธ
-
@I_am_Negan oh man, I loved Demon Knight. Especially the ending, where she gets on the bus. Good stuff, fits nicely into the Lore.
