@Moundshroud Thanks, this was helpful. In the handful of matches I've played as him it's been really hit or miss, so I'll try your tips. Especially #4- my first inclination has always been to down and hook.
-
@Boss I appreciate this thread, I know I struggle to recall what actions reward each category. I kinda wish the Emblem system was simplified a bit. The 2 things that stand out for me:
First, if you're solo q and the rest of your teammates are SWF, it can be really frustrating. Ppl in the SWF will naturally coordinate healings, unhooks, etc., and you're kind of forced to run info perks just to make sure you don't become the sacrificial lamb.
Question for other solo q players: Do you also tend to get fewer bloodpoints when there's SWF in your match?
Second, I feel like each Killer has 2 categories they naturally excel at getting points in. I play a lot of stealth Killers and it's usually easy to max out in the hunting category, whereas I hardly ever max out on a survivor category. Maybe that's part of the BP discrepancy? I don't know, but I'm also very curious to hear what other players have to say on this topic!

Lore is probably my favorite part of DbD, I'm a total sucker for a great story and Wraith really left an impact on me. Ace was a lot of fun, too, I enjoyed getting a peek at how brash his personality is.

I'm not going to say I don't understand, and there's almost always some genuinely rough circumstance or imbalance in your life creating that need for an emotional outlet where you can flip the tables by making other people upset/suffer/agitated. But that's really not how things are for most of us. Definitely not how they should be. It's just a game.
Emotionally stability is being able to handle those people and their ways of injecting toxicity into day to day interactions whether its even intent or just their nature. Emotional instability does mean people who can't handle that sort of toxic environment without their own wellbeing suffering, but emotional instability also encompasses that subset of people who need to validate their own experiences by disrupting those of others.
The internet has really enabled a lot of anti-social tendencies to flourish in people by naturally providing such insular environments of reinforcement. And people easily conflate "that which is" with "that which should be" in those places. Yeah, if you look to actual competition between actual humans, you'll find those same toxic mentalities from time to time--and some people simply are that way--but the important distinction is that's not encouraged or accepted.
In fact, the most professional and competitive venues always have penalties (financial or otherwise) against that sort of toxicity and bad sportsmanship. There's strategic value to poise, composure, and trying to knock their other player off their game. But that's something done by excelling in performance and making it look easy--it's not your noseguard calling their quarterback racial slurs. No player starts banging on the table in the middle of a poker match to throw off the other player's concentration. You don't teabag someone after you pin them. Trolling isn't composure. It's just another means of bullying. And bullying is always fun as long as you're the bully.
"It's just a game" isn't the battlecry for why you should act like that; it's the point of reason behind why the real world looks down on that stuff.
I love everything about this response ❤ Lots of insight, real world application, and said a 1000x more eloquently than I ever could.

Don't u think ur indirectly pushing a agenda though? There is nothing wrong w tunneling.
Its only wrong becuz survivors are entitled and wants the killers to play in a certain way. I understand the feeling of getting tunneled.
But u have to feel why a killer tunnels. U have to feel this by actually playing killer. And whatever u want killers to do, do exactly that, and than see how that feels.
Try playing killer for 1 month straight or like about a 100 killer games. Feel the BS u have to go thru as a killer.
This is why me, a survivor main, is a defender of the killers.
Remember, killers are not toxic. Survivors are toxic. Killers are victims and survivors are the aggressors.
I play both sides, though I have more hours put in survivor. I'm not trying to push an agenda, and I do see your point- there is certainly some survivor entitlement out there. Tunneling is certainly a strategy, and I've felt the pressure as a Killer to slow the gens by whatever means.
What I'm talking about are the games where Killers don't even give you a chance to play. They deny hook trades and chase you rather than the saving party until your dead 3 minutes into a game you waited 10 minutes to play. You can tell me to just 'git gud', but skill sometimes won't help you when it comes to RNG.
I don't want special treatment, I just want a chance to play the match.
-
I use Spine Chill in all my builds, but that's because I'm mostly solo q. That and Kindred are my bread and butter, so I really hope that the perk remains untouched. Because solo q players are going to be the most impacted and we already get enough punishment.
As I side note, I've never used SC in chase. It's probably situational, but I can't see myself sparing time to monitor the perk when every second counts.

First game of the day: Tunneled off first hook and killed with mori, de-pip
Second game of the day: Tunneled and face-camped, de-pip
Third game of the day: Slugging Sally at 5 gens, de-pip
Fourth game of the day: Tunneled out of game within first 5 minutes, de-pip
Fifth game of the day: Another tunnel and death by mori, de-pip
Sixth game of the day: Tunneling forever Freddy, de-pip
Repeat every day.
Wow I wish I could complain about killers just spamming crouch and using a one-time stun. I'd actually maybe enjoy survivor then.
Oh right, killers have it hard because they can't take the major emotional trauma from people crouching and clicking a flashlight
I honestly think we're seeing scummy play have a moment because ppl are doing whatever they can to finish the Rift challenges.
Some players give no quarter, and I've noticed tunneling off hook is becoming a popular tactic. As always, there's the good ppl out there- shout out to the Doctor who let me get my flashlight blinds at the exit gates of Hawkins. I was so happy to get that miserable challenge done I gladly would've taken the hook. Instead he slugged me and ran inside the gate until I left.
I was so bummed to learn afterwards they were on a different platform because they would've gotten a genuine thank you!

######### u talking about? We should all be respectful to one another. But in a MP game about killing ur opponents and unintentional troll game, it's for entertainment. Not for discipline.
If ur playing DBD on some kind of spiritual level, u've totally picked the wrong game.
I'm from the world of Starcraft, and harassing ur opponent is a great strategy. U are well respected for how well u harrass ur opponent.
That's...terrifying? Lol, not judging, I just had never heard that about Starcraft. But I'd believe anything when it comes to PvP games.
-
Because DBD isn't a game looking to explore horrific themes or push the genre. No, at the end of the day it's a PvP game. I enjoy survival horror games and psychological thrillers, but DbD isn't a forum for 'exploration'. That would be for games like Layers of Fear or Fatal Frame series, where elements of horror and disgust are themes part and parcel to the narrative.
Having a pregnant woman serves ZERO narrative purpose, again for the reason that DBD is not a narrative driven game. There's no story progression, just two sides with objectives driving the match. Same goes for mentally or physically handicapped ppl, or children- adding characters like that reeks of explotation and fetish role play, and that's not what I signed up for.
-
It was taken down, but unfortunately it seems nothing else was done, to the OP or otherwise.
-
I have fun, but survivors tend to outplay me more often than not. And it does bring my morale down....
When that happens, I switch my intent from winning to scaring the ever living ######### out of survivors by creeping around the map as Ghostface. Or see how close I can get to a survivor on gen before going 'BING BING, BING BONG' with Wraith. It breathes some levity into the game, hopefully for the Survivors, too ❤
-
So I'm not sure where all the toxicity comes from, because I have a few hundred hours in the game and have NEVER received a toxic message. Not one. I haven't broken past level 15 Killer, but I also tend to run NoEd because I'm a dumpster fire Killer that whiffs hits CONSTANTLY.
I guess what I'm getting at, is it more toxic the closer you are to red rank? Am I spared all that because I'm a Baby Killer?

No QTEs, please. Skill checks are all the QTEs I can take.
Totally fair. Late at night, maybe after a few drinks, the only thing I'd manage to hit is my television with my PS4 controller 🤫
-
Add a fear/panic meter mechanic. Clock Tower 3 had this, and if your meter tipped over a point you would lose control of the character.
So something similar- having your panic meter fill based on certain actions like being exposed to TR, being in chase, being injured for x number of seconds before healing. It would be interesting because it would FORCE survivors to have to change their approach depending on their meter level.
Something else that could add tension is add quick time events to things like opening chests or destroying totems. Make EVERY action have a consequence. Hit the wrong button while trying to open a chest? Damage the item inside or injure yourself + ADD to that panic meter!
-
I bought the premium track because I really liked the Wraith and Zarina skins, but the rest of it is filled with so much stuff I don't want or use 🙁
I agree some type of extension would be welcome. I'm feeling burnt out and frustrated from the Rift. Some of the challenges in the final chapter are so time consuming. Because if I'm feeling burnt out, I'm not having fun. If I'm not having fun, I'm not going to play- and that's one less person contributing revenue to keep the game going. Now imagine if hundreds of ppl feel that way???
There's great reasons to play the Rift, but I'm worried how it's structured is hurting the player base in the long run. I really hope Devs look at alternative set-ups.
-
I've only used a mori once for a Rift Challenge, but I DO think the Rift challenges encourage some toxic behavior. Lightburn/Blind a Killer 6 times? I'm sure Killers love that one.
Mori is even in dailies. I don't know what the answer is. I get that there's probably a decent amount of players who wouldn't normally play in an unfun way, but do so because of specific Rift challenges.
I have a feeling play will become less toxic once the Rift closes, but that's just my thoughts.
-
This makes me rethink my playstyle. I had 2 bloody streamers offered by survivors so I went easy on them. I downed and hooked a couple, but ultimately let everyone go. Maybe I should just play normally regardless of offerings? Idk.
But how you were treated was unfair. Whether it's farming or a regular match, all players should receive the same treatment by the Killer.

I had a Feng and Jane try to meme with me while I was Ghostface. When they were sure I was good with it, they followed me all over the map exchanging spam crouches. It made me laugh, having survivors chasing down the Killer :)
I also run NoEd sometimes and enjoy downing a survivor and drop them inside the Exit Gate. Watching rage instantly turn to utter surprise makes me giggle and usually gets me a TY or GG in chat.

@Primalux135 I'm going to do some research online- there's GOT to be something about gaming communities and psychology. Way back in the day, when you had to walk several miles through snow to get to campus classes, I took a 3 credit one on correlations between the real world and MMOs.

This makes me feel sad- if you feel like this is the most toxic community you've encountered after only playing for 100 hours, I'd suggest putting the game down now because it's not going to get better for you. Especially when you're coming at the community with aggression. There's a lot of decent ppl here willing to be kind and helpful if you take the time to get to know them, but you won't with that attitude.
Either way, wish you luck.

First time I’ve heard this from anyone, always wondered how things were on PC side of DBD as far as wearing out mouses, keyboards, etc.
I go thru a PS4 controller every 4-6mths. Usually, it’s the left joystick that has been wearing out an snapping.
Hopefully you can get a keyboard to plug into your laptop.
It happened to me for the 1st time recently. It makes me hesitant to buy a nice PS4 controller if I'm going to need to replace it again in a few months :(

I feel like so many players are struggling to find a reason to keep playing right now, so know you're not alone!
I know you recently questioned whether to enter red ranks or not, do you think rank change has created more headaches? If so, let red ranks go. I know I personally am comfy in green ranks- I don't sweat but still feel productive. If ppl want to say I'm a ######### player, fine, but mental health is infinitely more important than rank in a game.
I dunno what system you play on (I'm PS4), but you could play some KYF matches to practice some of the things bothering you during Killer matches. If you're on console I'm happy to volunteer!
All that said, taking a break can be healthy. It's not a weakness, it's not throwing in the towel- it's just stepping aside to gain some perspective. What you find is for you alone, and no one can judge your feelings.
Sending you struggle snuggles through the ether, friend!

No matter how I play, I rarely get a GG from survivors, unless at least one of them lives, then usually the survivor who lives says GG, otherwise its either a salt fest or silence.
That's a bummer, I'm sorry that's been your experience 😞 I still message if I don't survive, but admit a lot of times I get a response back like, "Oh, I was expecting salt lol". So it seems like a lot of players are having a similar experience. Just not sure what the answer is.

Being a good sport is never a waste of time. I usually say "GG Killer" myself. I don't often get a response, but I think most Killers are so used to Salt they barely look at the chat anymore or have already hit continue or upgrade. I say keep doing it, and so will I. Hopefully we can turn this franchise around and get a positive feedback loop going.
I'd love for that to happen, to have a positive feedback loop! Maybe we need a Shout Out Sunday thread where we share positive interactions we had over the week. I dunno.
But I appreciate each of you, Killer or Survivor, playing this game with me and contributing to the community! You are ALL FABULOUS <3

I'm on PS4 so it is kinda tedious to open the message window and it's never a guarantee they have messaging on. I was just second guessing myself because of an offhand comment. A friend of mine watched me play and asked why I bother messaging after game, and I shouldn't try to be everyone's friend.
I'm not, but I appreciate good sportsmanship and figure kindness never hurt anyone 🤷♀️ Plus I enjoy discussing other games we might have in common.

When your hobby turns into your full time job, it really sucks the joy out of it. Think about how common it is for ppl to switch careers now. I get that maybe his fan base feels they deserve more transparency from him, but it's hard not to cut and run when you're burnt out. He's a person, not a commodity, and at the end of the day he really doesn't OWE anyone anything.

Each role has its share of frustrations and miscommunication. But guess what? This game depends on BOTH roles to keep afloat and provide meaning. No one can force you to play nice with others, or be empathetic to the other side's view.
This is why when players cry for balance, my suggestion is to play that way- with equal time given to playing both Survivor and Killer. Not only does it help you mindgame/counter the other, it also gives exposure to the unsavory parts of what players of the opposing side deal with. Empathy goes a long way.
-
Appreciate everyone who took a moment to offer suggestions. @FrootLoops I didn't realize you didn't need to fully de-cloak, thank you! I used some rare add-ons and completed the challenge!
I admit I was in an impish mood and crept as close to survivors as possible and wailed on that bell. So many gens exploding, so much mayhem when I didn't fully de-cloak 😊 I let them all go, I had such a blast jump scaring them! Thanks for the tips, y'all! <3

Yeah, I turned off crossplay almost immediately... games were toxic, mismatched and unappealing.
Never found tunneling or face camping the appropriate method for handling any situation in a match, either.
I like the idea of the killer who is completely fed up with being a puppet for the entity and doing the entity’s bidding, an jus wants to have a fun time with the survivors.
Isn’t it sadly amusing how they watch the survivors running to freedom, yet they’re barricaded from that very sensation by the big boss’ tentacles.
Imaging all the killers teaming up to dispose of the entity so they can go back to a peaceful life, without someone telling them they’re forced to be maniacal murderers for the rest of their existence is pleasing, imo.
Can you write this fanfic??? Please and thank you.
-
It's a microcosm of real life- you have great ppl with a mix of toxic ones. I think about 85% of the community stays silent and keeps their head down, and to each their own, but it lets toxicity breed. I personally have been shown kindness and good sportsmanship, but also toxic behavior- I just try to pay the positive stuff forward.
Also, if you've ever been involved in/witnessed shipping wars, that's next level butthurt entitlement. This is by far a more relaxed environment 😌

Bamboozle is really good, and honestly that would be my only pick this week, BUT do not buy it if you will buy Clown at some point.
The perk can help a lot if you play killers like Leatherface and Billy, this way you can safely try to oneshot them in safe places like the Shack.
I do have Clown, but it seems to me that RNG is more favorable with perks from the Shrine instead of level unlock. I noticed this when I got BBQ &Chili from Shrine and I've been trying to go that route for perks ever since.
