It bums me out that this is even a discussion. On console, things are strict, and the banhammer falls heavy for just about any reason at all. But because things are so bad regardless, so many people have blocked messages from anyone outside their friends lists. More than half my attempts to send friendly messages are met with a privacy settings bounceback. Online gaming is a social thing and it would be nice to socialize without fear of nastiness.

What's Junji Ito? I don't recognize the name and it's in DBD.
You should absolutely check him out. He's one of modern horror's deities. His imagery is stellar.

They're not noticeable in game and so worthless to me. I've 2k hours in this game, never noticed anyones charm.
I always look at the killer's charms. Aside from being curious, if they're all DLC charms I know they probably play quite a bit. If they're all unfamiliar, I know they've likely been on dbd for a long time.
Survivor charms I mostly notice during healing. Except the bright, simple designs of pride flags, which can be spotted from a mile away even if you're not paying special attention.
So yeah, people look at them.

I play medic and I mainly rescue and heal from cages some of these cage spawns hurt though on certain maps are so big and they spawn on the other side of the map and I'm having to go on a great journey to save you I need a sprint burst or something to cut the journey time down
Yeah the massive maps make it hard, and by the time you get there, the killers are there too.

Bro, its a 2v8 and im still dying on hook. Lmao! You can't make this crap up. Like... there's 5 people left and im actually dying on my second hook in matches. Its hard to fathom 😅
The distant cage spawns and the overall chaos seem to make people forget to go get people. You've got to hope you have one or two people on the team who've chosen to be the uncagers.
-
I totally don't get it at all. I can loop the hell out of a killer and then the other one just pops up behind me and whacks me (I did manage to outdo a double team the other day though and that was quite satisfying.) I only play it enough for the Quests, and the killer queue times are too high for me to wait for that role.
And there's a reason they're so long. If the killers are both just barely decent, it's a slaughtering field.
I will say though, I used it as a stepping stone to start playing survivor because I didn't feel like such a burden on my team when I screwed up. Its all chaos anyway. In that way, I think it's great to get an idea of the role without much expectation.

I was worried there'd be a bunch of sandbagging killer mains with this system...

I will be honest with you all.
Despite being described as, "The only literate engineer", I never learned how em dashes or semi-colons worked.
In a bizarre twist of irony, that is exactly how I was able to show my professors, and the department head, that my work was not AI-generated. After all, what AI would be dumb enough to use exclusively commas?
Em dashes are pretty flexible. They're great for emphasis. Almost like an exclamation mark in the middle of a sentence. It's kinda like how an ellipsis is a slow, suspenseful pause. But an em dash is a dramatic shift.
Semicolons are kinda like soft periods or hard commas. The two sentences are complete but they're so closely linked that a period is too strong. They're a little trickier to know when to use, and not terribly necessary most times.

Wish I worked at a library though. Pretty much my dream job.

Another Alien chapter with an Engineer as the killer, and David8 and Shaw as survivors. An android survivor would be cool. He'd bleed white and make mechanical noises instead of pain sounds.
I'm not a huge Scream fan but I'd like a proper license for that one, with the longer-running characters as survivors. I'd definitely play as Dewey.

It's a tip that circulates on social media every so often, particularly TikTok but has also cropped up on sites like Wikipedia. Allegedly, you can tell text was AI generated if there's a lot of em dashes or other "uncommon" punctutation like semicolons or ellipses. The rationale being that they're unusual punctutation for humans to include in everyday writing like texts, e-mails, job applications etc. And I think there is a degree of logic to that, however, people often incorrectly extend the advice to creative writing too, where such punctuation is actually common and always has been. Especially where amateur creative writing is concerned.
Sadly, this has lead to a a fair few comments on popular fics asking "Is this AI?", or social media call-out posts of authors being "exposed" for using AI and other such nonsense.
I'm not on social media so I'm oblivious but that's absurd. Sure I'm not gonna use a semicolon in a job app just it has its place. You can barely get most people to even place a period at the end of a sentence nowadays. Just look at the mile long rambles we occasionally get on this forum. Pretty soon all correctly-structured sentences will look like AI if we get dumb enough.

I always wanted to be a writer but i just cant get my head into it, too much other life priorities and jobs i need to do.
This game has totally thrown me out of whack with it. I wrote everyday for years. Have a novel that needs revision. A couple more mapped out. About 20 short stories. I'm part of a critiquing site that I was really active in. Was also reading 50+ books a year. Now I just own a library worth of books I don't read. Took me two months to read the last one. Every time I tell myself "I'll write tonight" or "I'll read tonight" I boot up this stupid game instead.
-
@OnryosTapeRentals said:
In theory, I agree with this, but it's completely unenforceable in practice.
There's no reliable way to differentiate between generative AI and someone who just has stilted manner of writing. Or even someone who doesn't speak English as a first language and has ran their work through a translator (which is completely valid and should not be banned).
I, for one, write fanfic and have been accused of using AI before because of liberal usage of em dashes. Which is commonly cited as a "tell" that a work is AI, but the only reason AI uses em dashes a lot is because the human works it is mimicking used them first! Lots of the ways people say they can detect AI work are flawed for this reason and just end up with legitimate users getting AI accusations.
Hm. I write fiction for fun and I've never heard that. I love em dashes. When in doubt, em dash it.

I think Daryl is actually bugged. If he's screaming repeatedly, like with Scene Partner, his screams are the loudest thing in the game no matter how far you are from him. I have a video of it but I just couldn't be bothered to upload it for a bug report.
It's also pretty funny.

Plague still needs to find people and she does not have mobility, there is a big difference.
She wouldn't need to do much, just keep circling the map and spraying pallets and gens and let the other killer do the rest. I like Plague and I play as her but she'd be just as bad of a nuisance in 2v8, and even more boring to play as.

My comment is mostly about solo players who don't have friends to play with or none who want to be killer.
You've played with bots, right? You zone them into a corner and they just stand there. You try to open a gate and they try to merge with your body. You try to do a gen and they endlessly bop up and down to be healed. They're stupid. And a killer bot would also be stupid. It'd be okay for practice, but it would not be fun for long term play.
And even if they were somehow stellar (unlikley), victories and defeats would be hollow. There would be no mass exodus for this experience.
-
@sleepy_knight said:
As good as that sounds, it would be the final nail in the coffin for killer queue times I'm afraid. A lot of survivors would not queue up again for public matches because with bots they can avoid the tactics considered toxic and any killers/perks they don't like to play against.
You can already do this with friends. And if you're purely solo, why on earth would you want to play with three idiot bot teammates AND an idiot bot killer? The whole point is to play with real humans. Customs are for fun and for practice. This game would be horribly repetitive with only bots.
-
I'm not sure what amount it would take for me to keep being a punching bag for killers. All my survivor matches end in mass destruction. And then I get the error message when its my turn for killer, just to rub salt in the wound.

Thanks for mentioning it!
This is the elephant in the room.
Sometimes it's like people don't even realize that in the story they are telling, there's something even bigger that should be the story itself.
That's part of the story, that the killer was way better than us and decided to be cool about it instead of just steamrolling lower bracket players for an easy 4k. This was the most skilled Springtrap I've ever seen and had no business being matched with a bunch of mid soloqers. We've all talked to death about how wonky the matchmaking is. It's just a given at this point.

Yeah I thought about that afterwards. Dude still had to play alot to farm it that fast. I don't have any P100 characters. Not that I've been trying to get any though.
I boosted my survivor pretty hard during the anniversary too. But I also dumped all my BP into that. My killers are all low prestige, but they get plenty of add-ons in the blooodweb so I don't need to spend much on them. The survivor bloodweb is a trash heap so I have to spend spend spend just to get what I want.
And yeah, my matchmaking is the same. Even putting me with a p100 killer is crazy. I think they all must have thought the same when they saw my skill level. Then as killer I get the most organized group of flashlight-clicking, meta perk-running, body-block and taunting turds.
-
@thrawn3054 said:

for someone who has okayed for a while and reads the forums and generally handstands the flux of buffs and nerfs, I can usually ride out a storm in a teacup such as this and try not to let things get to me if I can help it. But I sometimes play with a friend who is really new to the game and I can see they’re on the verge of giving up on the game as the learning curve is so steep. It’s difficult enough trying to explain to them the various powers and perks and how to (in theory, as I myself can’t lol) deal with them. But with this iteration of Clown, and the frequency of which we face them, I can say that they are really not liking the experience.
I often tell friends new to the game: you will need patience and expect to die A LOT. Expect things that will feel unfair at times but just hang in and you’ll get better and enjoy the game as time goes on.But it is getting more and more difficult for new players to adjust or acclimatise when their experience is game after game of Clowns who are constantly on their back within seconds.
Even not being new I'm dying constantly and it's really dragging me down. It wouldn't be so bad if the killers were simply better players and I was outdone, but it's more like this situation, with zero-ability zoomzoom Clowns steamrolling me.
I've played 12 survivor games tonight. I've died in 9 of them. That's, what, a 25% escape rate? In those matches, I died three(!) times on my first hooking thanks to camping. I was aggressively tunnelled out of another three. And two had egerious with slugging. That's eight of the nine deaths that all featured garbage tactics by trash players who refuse to simply learn how to participate in active gameplay. Killer mains complain about survivors holding W or using fog vials to avoid chase, then they use all these tactics that help them avoid chase, cause that's all their doing when they kill me with one hooking or leave me on the ground for three minutes.
I don't think I'd try to convince anyone to play this game as it is right now. As least, not as survivor.
-
@UnicornMedal said:
I've never played against a Vecna that wasn't super aggressive, so my opinion is colored by that. I think the chest system is fun (though the achievement is kind of dumb).

I'm not confident but i play similarly because i dont take the game (or myself) too seriously. I'm also a sucker for being serenaded by Bardic Inspiration. I don't enjoy farming at all though, I just have no problem playing favourites lol
Yeah same. A good Plot Twist and a surprise concert and my heart is yours. I'll farm a little, if they want to, but I'd rather the chosen one just head on out.
It was just nice to see people who were both super good at the game and relaxed about the outcome at the same time.
-
I hate it. It was a huge part of my gen build which, between my p100 being out of my favorite add-ons and also being a BP pit to get more, is now gutted. The change is totally baffling to me.
-
@UnicornMedal said:
Exactly. I make this point constantly, but Survivors really don't care that much about winning. Not just in DBD either. You'll have sweats on either side regardless, but overall Survivors just want to play the game and feel like they participated. With how the game is balanced, a Killer extending mercy really does have a positive impact on the trial. There's no obligation for them to either, so it's extra meaningful when they do.
Yes, just so. It feels nice to do it as killer too. I don't care about some silly stats, if someone isn't playing serious then I don't need to either. Those breaks do everyone a world of good. The matches I remember the most are the ones where the barrier came down.
A lot of killer mains seem to think survivirs want to win every match but that's not the case. I just don't want to loose to someone who was terrible became they pulled something dirty. I'm totally fine with losing to people who are fantastic but played fair.
-
@BorisDDAA said:
Not to be a downer, but if two people died at 5 gens against Springtrap that's a huge MMR moment.
That's part of the point. Like I said, they were really good. We couldn't even touch a gen without them constantly popping out of the doors. This killer recognized, when us last two just gave up, that we were severely outclassed, and actually let us do all 5 gens while they practiced throwing their axe at us over obstacles. It was cool of them to realize they'd had some lower-bracket players dumped on them and not just smash us all.

Thanks again for the suggestion to play with you, I really appreciate it.I think I might need more time for something like this. I'm a bit socially anxious when I don't know people personally, especially with voice chat. That's why I play solo queue. I hope this gets better at some point, because it's definitely more fun to play with others.
I can't emphasis this enough: you should never, EVER feel pressured into voice chat.
I play with random friend-requesters. Most of them I've never exchanged even a single text with. Some I talk to through text. Some I've even played with for many, many hours and been in VC but I myself have never spoken. They're all okay with it, and listening in helps me be part of the group. When someone new adds me I immediately tell them no VC. Everyone is immediately understanding. If I ever get someone who isn't, I'll just delete them. Easy as that.
I teally recommened trying to play with someone. Just having another person linked to you in the game makes a world of difference in how it feels. I landed a friend early on who was better than me and so much braver and seeing how bold she acted completely changed not just my playstyle but how I regarded the whole experience.

I suggest it because it'd help the anxiety, I feel. it's putting you in your least comfortable position, but it gives you "safety in the eye of the storm". Object for sure will get you killed on its own, but when it doesn't it saves :P
from my experience playing these builds, some killers will respect it and refuse to chase
Landing Scene Partner in Chaos Shuffle made me do a 180 from coward to clown. It was the most helpful perk ever in my growth. Bought Cage immediately afterwards.

That is what I think as well when I play killer. If a survivor is a good sport, is a good looper and knows how to play against me without any BM, I will always respect that and let them have their W.
However, all bets are off if I come across survivors that play in a toxic manner. They always gets what they deserve.
Oh yeah, for sure. If you're clicking your flashlight at me, body blocking my very first chase, or taunting for no reason and just being an overall turd, then me being cool is done. I don't ever act like that as surv. I hate when I'm on a team of people BMing.
I just had a match against a Dredge who was trying for the adept and had clearly never used the killer (bless their heart). Got one hooking the whole match. I ran him around quite a bit at the beginning and if I can do it, I know they're bad. One teammate teabagged the hell out of him at the door. The other two kept running him around nearby instead of just leaving. I just took my sad little lower-case w and walked out.

THIS..
I had a similar match against a Ghoul a few days ago where he was bodying my teammates left and right, but he had a decently good chase with me, and let me get the door in the end. So nice to see killers that aren't hellbent on getting that finisher mori all the time, which in 95% of cases, they are.
Even as a mid killer, I regularly let the best player leave. If you looped the hell out of me then kudos, you can have the escape, especially when I can appreciate how much better at survivor they are than me.
I think the finisher mori has been so subtlety destructive to good sportsmanship. It's made everyone so uncool.
