It was never intended to work like this

Actually, I believe the devs have said it was meant to work like this. @MandyTalk gens popping right as you leave is intended, right?

But I guess you just barely play survivor role (if ever), so you think only in this killer main perspective, where the worse the survivor experience is - the better.

    😂

Survivor main demands buffs as 'QoL improvements', then calls people who disagree 'Killer mains' because Survivors always believe they should have everything stacked in their favor. Yep; typical toxic Survivor main. Anyone who disagrees is clearly biased.

Yeah, I'm a "toxic survivor main" who plays both sides regularly and just wants gameplay to be less painful for one of the sides, you got me there, destroyed my point completely.

Basic quality of life to make one small aspect of the game less frustrating.

Less frustrating for Survivors only, you mean. Meanwhile, Killers lose out on the loss of gen progress for chasing Survivors off gens.

Funny how Survivors are now demanding buffs as 'quality of life improvements'. Did demanding Killer nerfs 'because unfun' stop working?

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2756888#Comment_2756888

OP is talking about gens popping when they have to run away, or when they leave it to go help someone. You know; something that causes gen regression & helps a Killer, and changing it would be an direct buff for Survivors/nerf for Killers.

Getting skillckeck the same tick you let go of a gen, thus failing a skillcheck you didn't even see, is not something that should happen. It was never intended to work like this. Fixing it is a solid quality of life improvement.

But I guess you just barely play survivor role (if ever), so you think only in this killer main perspective, where the worse the survivor experience is - the better.

  • The devs are adamant about not adding it: neither a voice chat, nor a simple text chat. Apparently, only SWF deserve to have any ways of communication.

  • @AngyKiller said:

Oh yes; lets remove a little more Killer pressure by preventing gens from exploding when Killers chase Survivors off of them.

I think you misunderstand what the OP is talking about.

The fact there's no MMR decay is worse, though.

That MMR implementations are based off win vs loss is normal; that this turns it into a series of 1v1s and leads to a game state most people don't enjoy as the most practical strategy for a win does not do it any favours.

But all of those are irrelevant to the question posed. MMR decaying won't incentivise people to not play; wanting to play something else more will. Having MMR decay is normal and expected, not something people will try and game.

MMR decay would be bad for solo players, since for solos the higher MMR - the better teammates - the easier games. SoloQ players have to pay with sweat and blood for that sweet MMR increase (escaping in soloQ is a matter of chance, mostly depending on your teammates), hoping to get out of the low MMR pit, and with MMR decay they will be afraid of stopping playing the game.

  • @RainehDaze said:

If they stop playing until their MMR lowers, they'll wind up back where they should be within a few games. You also have to ask "How bad has something gotten if people would rather not play the game than deal with matchmaking?"

The idea that people who aren't playing the game for long periods should be assumed to have gotten a bit worse is a perfectly sane MMR implementation. It's normal to do it this way for one reason or another. What's baffling is worrying about how this will be exploited by people... not playing? What.

Yeah, except this is not "perfectly same MMR", since it equalizes escapes with skill.

  • - Can I block killers I don't want to play with?

    - Now way, that option would be abused and matchmaking would be destroyed!!!

    - Can I block survivors I don't want to play with?

    - Sure, why not? Here, you can see them in the lobby, access their profiles, and you can mark them howerver you like (like blocking in steam), so you can dodge the lobby if you see one of them later! Happy dodging!

    BHVR logic at its finest.

Cool, so you've admitted that they aren't ignoring the problem and you've shifted the goalposts to a different criticism. One I actually agree with this time, but it doesn't change the fact that you knowingly lied in the other message.

Of course, this conversation has gotten wildly off topic- the topic is that you claim there hasn't been a good patch in a year because you're selectively ignoring all the good that's been done in that time period. That's all I intended to dispute at first, so if you've got nothing more to say on that topic and just want to twist in the wind regurgitating unrelated points about BHVR as a company, I think we're done here!

Where exactly did I lie? "Ignoring the problem for 5.5 years and only then responding with something that still might be scrapped and forgotten, as it happened many times before" is not much different from "Ignoring the problem". You seem to be running out of hooks to attack the criticism, trying to attach one label after another to me: at first I was "walking it back" when you misundestood what I was saying, then me saying that removal of the masks was motivated by purely political reasons (which they were) is "bating", and now I'm "knowingly lying" about something. I'm getting tired of these unfounded attacks, your goal is to defend the current state of the game at all costs while disregarding the opposite opinion with unfounded labels like "back-walking, baiting and lying", you made your position clear, fine.

you claim there hasn't been a good patch in a year because you're selectively ignoring all the good that's been done in that time period

I already replied to that. If an update contains something undesirable and makes the game worse at something - I call it a "bad update", because good updates should not make the game worse. There is no a single update (not mere bugfix) released within the last year that didn't hurt the game one way or another. This point still stands.

Most will reserve this power just for the trolls only, and it will surely make the game more healthy

This is the same player base where a large portion think they can control how others play, and give threats and insults when they're not obeyed.

Many will block anyone who beats them, using excuses like 'They camped' or 'They had Dead Hard' to excuse what they are doing. Let's be real. And then those good players can't find a game as quickly, because salty players have blocked them with the sole reason being 'I lost to them'.

As I said, if you block 1000 players - it's the same as if 1000 players had blocked you. So those "active blockers" will have matchmaking problems themselves. Moreover, the system could be tweaked a bit, like the blocks not being permanent, but lasting for a few days, etc.

You have your idea of what will most likely happen, I have mine, until the system is actually tried nobody can know for sure.

  • @AngyKiller said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2754991#Comment_2754991

Yeah but this would be abused to high hell. People would block Killers or Survivors that out play them, and those Killers and Survivors would have a harder time finding matches.

The chances of being matched with the same players repeatedly (with crossplay on) are probabilistically insignificant, so I doubt it will "ruin the game". Until the system is actually tried, we can't be sure how it will actually turn out. People who will block every killer they lose to will have problems finding the game themselves, so I doubt many players will start blocking everyone. Most will reserve this power just for the trolls only, and it will surely make the game more healthy (although people who only play to ruin the game for others will surely complain that "they are blocked by everyone because they outplay everyone").

you still get rushed and lose

    not just the game

The point is not to win, the point is to have fun.

  • It's simple: DbD is the monopolist of its genre. There is no other thriving game like this one, no real competition, although some attempts to make similar games have been made (mostly unsuccessful). The situation is unique for DbD: ie. if you don't like, say, CoD, but like the genre - you are free to go to Battlefield (and vice versa), if you don't like DOTA, but like the genre - there is LoL (and vice versa), etc. But if you like the general idea of DbD's gameplay, but hate the game itself with all your heart - you don't have much to go to, so most people uninstall, refresh and then install again, because they don't have a choice.

Although recently some more successful attempts to recreate the same idea have been made (Propnight, VHS), still they are far from DbD level of popularity and quality.

  • @jesterkind said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2753696#Comment_2753696

SWF can't hurt the game balance because that implies SWF can be removed or reigned in. Since it obviously can't, and since it's not as though you need to use comms to use and abuse most of the very strong things in the game, mentioning SWF is only relevant in the context of how SoloQ are left in the dust- which they aren't ignoring so can't be what you're talking about here.

Again. What do you suggest they do? What is the criticism here, what should they "do about" SWF?

There have been so many suggestions on how to make the situation better. I've already replied about that some time ago, let me find it...

    Here it is:

    There could be several options.

Bringing solos to the level of SWFs completely, like this: adding icons showing who is doing what (including chases), adding quick global messages like "the killer is near me" or "my gen is X% done" (that would show the exact %), adding text team chat at least, making Kindred, BT and DS basekit, etc.

Moving SWF to a separate game mode with separate game rules.

Removing SWF completely: wanna play with your friends - go to Kill Your Friends and bully one of your own.

    etc.

Yeah, they announced they would think about adding those icons eventually (still, I won't believe it until I see it actually implemented, since we all know what their promises are worth), but that happened after 5.5 years! And all this time they have been bombarded by decent suggestions. Scott Jund made a good review of a whole collection of great ideas on how to improve DbD, commenting that most of those ideas never reached the attention of the devs, and those that did and even were approved by the devs still haven't been worked on, even though the devs said they would implement it, like with that mechanism of promoting players taking the role that is currently lacking players, for the sake of more consistent queues.

The ideas are out there in great supply, even the good ones made by experienced players and generally trusted people like Scott and Otz, BHVR just don't see any point in listening to the community, they only listen to the game designers they hired and to nobody else.

  • Doesn't look like a fix to the problem. The real reason the perk is so valuable is the enormous grindwall that gets worse with every chapter and fixing which the devs have no intention of. You should always look at the source of the problem, not at the consequences.

  • @GannTM said:

If he’s doing it over multiple games, it is a bannable offense if you have video evidence.

Yeah, that too, but I wouldn't count on that since there is no proven precedent of someone ever getting banned for a similar offense.

  • Will changing nickname help on PS4? If you have crossplay off - turn it back on to get a greater variety of killers.

  • Tunnel one guy out of the game early, eat every DS and avoid BT's. Read the end-game chat. Alternatively you may use Bubba and facecamp the first hook.

  • @ThatGuySerenity said:

Ah yes, all we need is more killer strategies on how to make the game unfun for survivors. If people could just play the game without being 4-Letter "C" words, the game might have higher ratings.

I wish a very merry abandonment to everyone who plays like this all the time.

Judging by the updates that came out within the last year, devs themselves don't want players to have fun. Why should I, as the killer, care about fun of other players, when I myself have to deal with DH, DS, hit validation, SWFs, fairly earned cosmetics getting removed, DC penalty for leaving games with cheaters and so on? Reducing the number of concurrent players is the best way to get their attention to the problems they do their best to ignore.

I'm... huh? Wow, okay, so, let's... see what we can do to untangle this mess.

We're going to sidestep the whole "political" thing because that feels very much like bait for a kind of argument that would get us both in trouble, so let's just glide past that entirely.

Now, let's actually take a look at your other argument- or at least, what little we can discern from it. You say "the whole community has been complaining about SWF since day 1 of release", and that the devs "ignore" it. So, first of all, obviously the whole community doesn't complain about SWF. Even ignoring the parts of the community that are playing with friends - something we have literally no reason to do, they're not less a part of the community - there are plenty of killers, myself included, who haven't been "complaining about SWF" since that's incoherent nonsense.

Which leads us to the implication- that the devs should have "done something" about SWF. What on earth does that mean? How are they supposed to "do something" about the obvious reality of online gaming that sometimes people play with their friends? I'm assuming you aren't talking about the gap between SWF and SoloQ since they aren't ignoring that, so what exactly do you mean here?

So you want to say SWFs are completely fine and don't hurt the game balance in any way? And that people don't complain about SWFs being OP, especially comparing them to soloQ, about every single day here on forums? If so, then I guess any kind of discussion if futile here. That's besides the fact that you imply the removal of Bubba's mask was motivated by some gameplay reasons rather than completely exogenous political ones.

  • @jesterkind said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2753439#Comment_2753439

I do play SoloQ whenever I play survivor so I understand why you would think that, but the emblem system categorically was not better. It's also a completely unnecessary personal attack to imply that I purposefully drop my MMR to stomp on new players just because I disagree with you, so you're not doing your argument any favours with that one.

It may have taken a lot longer to derank with emblems, by the way, but the point is that you didn't need to because of how inaccurate they were.

Also, plenty of people had very legitimate arguments for why the Bubba masks (specifically the Smartface mask) were inappropriate and maybe not a great idea. You may not agree with them but that doesn't mean they don't exist, nor that they don't have a point.

Those arguments might be legitimate only within a specific political ideology, not from the game design point of view, so those were purely political and ideological arguments. Even if there were some people who genuinely complained about Smartface, they were just a few, comparing to the great majority of other players who don't want the masks to be removed. So they listened to a handful of people providing political argumentation and implemented their wish overnight.

Meanwhile the whole community has been complaining about SWF since day 1 of release, providing completely legitimate game design (no politics attached!) reasons of SWF being the main problem of the game, and only after 5.5 years they started reacting to it.

So even if we accept the removal of masks as something "legitimate", as you say, it still doesn't show the devs in a good light, since they accepted completely external demands of a vocal minority (which is so small that calling it just a "vocal minority" sounds like exaggeration, it was no more than a dozed complaints a year) instantly, while continuously ignoring the greatest demand of the general population throughout the years.

  • @Seanzu said:

72 hours, also it is not known when the resets work as bhvr don't want people "cheating" the system.

UPD: oh hevermind, the guy above already told it, lol

  • @jesterkind said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2752981#Comment_2752981

Sure! I don't agree, though- the MMR system isn't working very well, I'm hardly going to argue that it's perfect and needs no notes, but games are undeniably more consistent for the majority of players than they were under the emblem system. The emblem system would have such a wild amount of variance that games were a complete diceroll- "rainbow ranks" was a big thing for a reason, after all.

What I think people are noticing is that they don't like the state of the game's meta, and because their games are actually more consistent now, they're noticing it more often. That is not a fault with MMR and positioning it as one actively works against fixing the problem that does exist.

You can only justify Escape Based Matchmaking unless you play soloQ. For soloQ (aka the most oppressed class of DbD society) it turned the game into pure hell. Emblems were much better. But I can see how killer mains can be in favor of this new system, because it's now trivial to AFK 5 games in a row to drop the MMR drastically and have easier games, it took much longer to derank with emblems, so I can see where you are coming from.

last good update? to me that goes in September and follow up with Hellraiser chapter. 2 in 1 shot: MMR and the Pinhead.

To be honest you all miss the last mid-chapter (not particulary this one).

So the game is only but not gradually becoming worse, it's becoming balanced for the new system which is amazing.

"and we have bubba mask removal that nobody asked for", you really said that? Sir, I think you either don't give a ######### at all and only want to rant about something honestly.

I don't get what you mean by that attack about masks. The majority of players hate this change, they only did it because some twitter celebrity complained about an "issue" that hasn't ever been an issue in actuality. The devs showed that the opinion of one twitter celebrity overweighs the opinion of the players.

  • @jesterkind said:

That's great, but it doesn't change any of the other updates you mentioned that were a net positive. It's also a weird hill to die on since the emblem system was worse, but that's getting away from the point.

I'm not sure why some people are so dead set on making everything out to be doom and gloom all the time. Do you think it softens any criticism you want to make to acknowledge anything that's being done right, or something?

I'm sure the emblem system was much better than the current implementation of MMR, and the majority of player agree on this point.

Well, yes, some of the updates did something good besides ruining the game in some of the other aspects, sure. But isn't it supposed to happen? Isn't it what the updates are for? Being happy for updates actually doing something except just wrecking the game is like being happy for the grass being green and the sky being blue, it's some low quality of life depth we got into if we are easily satisfied with updates doing something good once in a while.

  • @jesterkind said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2752940#Comment_2752940

It's absolutely walking it back. There's a giant difference between a bad update and a very good update with bad things included, which is what 5.3.0 was.

Okay, great. It's still far easier on people's keyboards/controllers and far more accessible to people with repetitive strain injuries, arthritis, or any other physical health issue that makes jamming a button hard- as well as being much less annoying to deal with for everyone else. You can't spin an objectively good change into something bad just because it makes it harder to pout and leave a match early.

Not really a big difference. If an updated adds Escape Based Matchmaking, this one feature ruins the whole update (and the game too), whatever good things it might have added alongside. If I could rollback this update as a whole, I would've gladly done so just to revert EBMM, without even caring what good the update could've had added, since no fix or "nice addition" is worth the disaster of EBMM.

  • @jesterkind said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2752934#Comment_2752934

Walking it back to a pretty different take there, then, aren't we? That still leaves 4.7.0, since Trickster buffs and the change to the struggle phase were good things.

No walking back here, that is exactly what I meant.

The new struggling system makes it much harder to suicide, as I already said, which is not a good thing if you are stuck in a game you don't want to continue.

  • @jesterkind said:

5.3.0 was much more than just boons, that's being incredibly reductive for the sake of a point. That update was very very good overall, even if the DLC that launched alongside it introduced a perk that causes balance issues- and, to be fair, one of the many many things in it was also done pretty poorly.

It's also worth mentioning that 5.0.0 also contained good things, not just RPD. 4.7.0 did too, in fact- specifically, the struggle phase skillchecks! Just because you or any other player has a tendency to get salty and want to leave the game without a disconnect penalty doesn't make them a bad addition.

Come on, man. You're being hyperbolic for a point, I get that, but it's so hyperbolic that it renders your point completely incoherent.

Ok, by "good update" I meant "an update that didn't bring something horrible and generally hated alongside"

Oh, cool, another nail into the game's coffin by the devs. And their reasoning being ... ?

  • DC penalty should not trigger if the map is RPD

  • Had this happen to me yesterday, was pissed off and haven't played since then.

All you're doing is attacking people and ranting. No one said the game is flawless but it's clear talking to you is a waste of time. Good night.

You clearly said the game crashing was my PC's fault and by no means due to the game, implying the ban was deserved, and then stating plainly I have no right to complain, all in an aggressive way. Excuse me, but if anything I have the complete right to complain about such nonsense.

  • @dugman said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/2751393#Comment_2751393

I can count on one hand the number of times I've been disconnected, and I've never had the game actually crash. Most people don't crash out all the time, if you do it's probably like the poster said, you should look up your specs and post them in the tech support section and see if maybe there's a driver you should update.

The game kicked me into the main menu with "unknown error" or whatever, still can be considered as "crash" even if it wasn't to the desktop.

It's not "constantly" crashing, don't put your words into my mouth please. It happened once for today and it's enough to ruin it and piss me off for the whole day, since beside the crash I also get undeserved penalty. Double hit by BHVR. But yeah, in your opinion whoever gets DC penalty - 100% deserves it, this game is flawless and contains no errors in the code, I'm not even going to start arguing with this position. What surprises me is the uniqueness of the game in this regard and the uniqueness of the community of people who see no problem in handing out undeserved bans because of technical issues within the game.

  • @AngyKiller said:

Because no DC penalty = no game. People will leave for no reason.

Also: As this is not being mass-reported; it's less 'the game' (Or it would be happening to everyone) and more 'Your PC'. Why not post your specs? See if maybe there's a problem? Or try updating your video card?

But sure; complain about the DC penalty instead.

What do specs have to do with it? I've played this game for 3 years, and I can clearly see when it's "my PC", and when it's the "perfectly implemented game without a single flaw". But sure, blame the victim here, what a discerning person you are. It's not like the game, especially this game, can be bugged, can crash on its own, right? And it's not like punishing people for experiencing, not using but EXPERIENCING game-breaking bugs themselves could be wrong, right? The game crashed on you, ruining your experience? Tough luck, take your DC penalty to make it up for you, have a nice day! Show me any other game where this is even possible.

  • Escape Based Matchmaking at its finest. They lead the killer to other survivors intentionally, to lose him and have a higher chance of escaping themselves. They are not aggressive intentionally, for the same reason.

  • The devs made it clear they don't intend to lower the grindwall. It's so tough by design.

  • BHVR spent money and worker time on this. If they scrap it now - they will basically say they have wasted 2 years fruitlessly (on "implementing" this "feature"), which will greatly displease the investors. So the completely failed, misimplemented and generally hated MMR system is here to stay for good.

  • The killer is easy to win as: it has free slowdown perk out of the box, it has broken hitbox making ranged hits trivial, and it's an anti-loop killer. Nothing surprising in the fact that people like to win easily.

  • They game is not ruined by disconnecting. When someone DCs, they have a reason for this, it means the game has already been ruined at that moment. People DC BECAUSE the game is ruined, not the other way around. Disconnects are merely symptoms of a ruined game.

  • Yeah, grabbing people who are actively trying to get your attention just to hit you with DS and bully you is "tunneling", sure. SBMM is a joke that factors in exclusively kills and escapes and nothing else. That is not a good indicator of skill whatsoever.

So either SBMM doesn't work and must be scrapped immediately, or killers are indeed OP and should be nerfed immediately. One of the two conclusions can be drawn.

I'm curious, what would you say "fixing SWF" would look like?

    There could be several options.

Bringing solos to the level of SWFs completely, like this: adding icons showing who is doing what (including chases), adding quick global messages like "the killer is near me" or "my gen is X% done" (that would show the exact %), adding text team chat at least, making Kindred, BT and DS basekit, etc.

Moving SWF to a separate game mode with separate game rules.

Removing SWF completely: wanna play with your friends - go to Kill Your Friends and bully one of your own.

    etc.

Still, not a single attempt to do ANYTHING to address the problem (the main problem of the game to that) has been done for 5 years. The devs act like the problem is not even there, they don't even bother to acknowledge its existence.

  • @bm33 said:

Just adding - alot of the community has been asking for the Claudette mask to be removed for years now. A large portion of the community also asked for the wiggle system to be changed due to ruining keyboards/controllers as well as for accessibility. So those two examples are things BHVR listened to the community on.

I only remember one thread asking for it, and it was a clear joke thread. Even if there are people in the community who take this mask as a serious problem, they are not just a "vocal minority", they would be a "vocal 0.1%". Why do you think the devs never bothered asking the players themselves, via some kind of in-game vote? Because they knew almost every player would oppose the mask censorship. This example just shows BHVR at its finest: listening to some twitter celebrities while completely ignoring 99.9% of the playerbase and making completely unnecessary, unasked for and generally unpopular changes, while the real problems which are being talked about literally every day remain unaddressed.

  • @Xendritch said:

Probably because the community keeps making threads like this fill of strawmen and false equivalencies and that's when they're not doing conspiracy theories and taking everything the devs say in bad faith.

Otz’s video doesn’t show killers are OP, it shows Otz is OP. Basically most wins and losses typically comes down to which side made more misplays, mistakes far outweigh the various other balance issues everybody goes on about on the forums. Virtually every game I lose I can point to mistakes I made that cost me hooks and time (whiffing attacks, not switching a target when I should, not finding someone I missed, etc) Otz is an extremely good killer who plays the game professionally and does not tend to make nearly as many mistakes as the great majority of players. Since the survivors are brought down in part by their weakest links, unless all four survivors are at Otz’s level of play the odds are exceptionally good he’ll find the weakest links first, eliminate them and then finish the stronger survivors off because they’re short on support. And the odds of four players at Otz’s level being in the same lobby when Otz is looking for a match is small (best chance of it happening would be a really strong full swf team which there aren’t that many.)

So while there are balance issues, in reality they mainly only impact matches where all five players are at equally really high skill. The great majority of players aren’t at that elite level, and for them mistakes outweigh these balance discrepancies. Losing a chase because you went the wrong way or missed a swing is way more hurtful than if you equipped one slow down perk versus a stronger slow down perk for instance.

The whole point of MMR is matching players of equal skill. If we accept that SBMM is a thing and it works, we must accept Otz was matched with equal players. Therefore his opponents were on the same skill level as Otz.

We can make two conclusions from his experiment: either SBMM doesn't work and must be scrapped, or SBMM actually works and the killers are just OP and must be nerfed, and looking at his numbers - nerfed hard.

Cool. What is Otz's mmr score?...give me a number....yeah thought so.

You want to say Otz has low MMR? Mmmkay...

  • It's the only way to have a reason to complain about "gens flying too fast", after all.
