  • Good job, dude. That's insane.

  • It would be really nice to have this, for the exact reasons you say. It would also be nice if there were a practice mode for killers where you could get extra information/feedback about the range on your special powers or where the center of your screen is or similar things, just to try to learn the controls in an environment that's not a live game.

  • Morally, what you did was fine, but I don't know how it'll look on video, if they show you body blocking Steve.

  • I think we should use "blighted" as a swear.

Last year, I got so excited for Halloween, and then I was so disappointed. I don't want to get my heart broken again.

  • I would say yes. Whether or not I chase them in the moment depends on how much I think they're trying to get me to chase them, so they can distract me. But, I also have a memory so, if I have the choice between killing someone who played perfectly politely or killing someone who was rude, my first choice is the person who was rude.

  • For challenge purposes, if you can get a 3-gen going, you can get a lot of kicks from it.

But, for regular play purposes, no one has time to kick gens, and I don't kick them unless it's an emergency.

  • I think the emblem/scoring system needs to be reworked, which is why I didn't vote for it to stay the same, but I'm not sure that an automatic safety for escaping or 4K is the right choice, either.

I'd be worried that there would be some people who would just hide in a locker all game, or slug everyone at 4 gens if they weren't sure they had a huge advantage.

Well, I play Overwatch quite a bit and i've never asked the other team "Geez! Couldn't ya just let us get the payload halfway so it'd be fun for us?!?" And I've never been asked that either.

I don't play Overwatch, so I don't know what that means.

  • You know this already but, if everything happened as you say, you were right and the guy who DC'd was wrong. Both about what he said and about DCing in the first place.

IMO, it's normal and fine to camp someone during EGC -- especially if you hooked them right at the same time the last gen popped. You know for sure someone's going to come to the hook -- why would you leave to take a gamble on one of the doors?

  • "I know a way you can safe pip, play regularly." I like that comeback. 🤣

I'm sorry that happened to you. I don't always want to farm, either, and usually that's respected, but sometimes I get a game where not wanting to farm makes me the target of the farming, and it sucks. But, as you said, at least it means you get to leave.

  • It's definitely the right choice to stop playing for a while if it's making your life worse instead of better. If it feels too extreme to give up a game you want to like and spent a lot of money on, it might help to remind yourself that it doesn't have to be a Forever choice unless you want it to be. You can keep checking in with yourself over time to see if your feelings about the game have changed -- you don't have to stick to whatever decision you make today.

If it helps, I started out as a killer main and ended up taking a five month break after about a year (which started off as me deciding to stop playing forever). I was upset about a lot of the same things you are and realized that the game was making my life worse instead of better, just by adding so much stress. Every now and then, I asked myself if I was still happy with the decision not to play and, about five months in, I felt something I thought I would never feel, which was a sudden interest in playing survivor.

When I came back to play survivor, I ended up being a both-sider, and I have a better experience with that, though I'll still take breaks from killer for a few weeks at a time.

  • I'm also neutral. I wouldn't say I'm like, "Yay -- NOED!" when it pops up, and I also don't really use it anymore except for challenges that require kills during EGC. But I'm also not super bothered. It's just one of those late game things that might surprise you.

  • You know what, when I clicked on this, I wasn't expecting to be that scary or suspicious, and it was absolutely both. Now I'm gonna spend the evening googling how to protect my account.

  • Yeah, I've never understood the "I paid for access to this digital space, and so did you, so only my enjoyment of this space is important!" argument. There's such a thing as sharing the space with other people.

  • It's a tough bottleneck, definitely. I started with the killer side because I knew it would be a nightmare to try to get unhooks while everyone else was doing it too.

I'll be honest and say that, in the past, with these specific challenges, I will reach a point where I get frustrated because I'm fighting three other people for every unhook, and there's always that one David who won't take turns -- and I'll start rushing the hook just so I can try to finish the challenge and move on to something else. I get why people do it -- and I wish the devs hadn't made it a bottleneck in the web.

  • I've had it both ways. I had an awful game against Hag one time where I managed to self-unhook during EGC, only to land directly on a Hag trap, which made her pop back and kill me.

On the other hand, I had a game against a Ghostface a few weeks ago that was one of the stupidest I've ever played, where my three teammates kept hook-bombing and I had to keep leaving my gen to try to pick them up / unhook them when all three of them were down. After a few rounds of that, we all ended up hooked in the basement, and I managed to self-unhook just before the auto-kill would have happened. The Ghostface and I just stared at each other for a second, and then he let me run for the hatch.

  • If I'm losing, I play the loss -- meaning, I keep playing normally until my character actually dies. It's for all the reasons people have already said -- it's good sportsmanship; you keep getting points; there's a small chance you'll escape.

There comes a certain point where I just mentally shift, and it's like, "Okay, we're not winning this one, but we'll see how far we can get."

  • I feel like the spinning has gotten worse lately?

I'm used to the thing where the survivor suddenly swerves off camera and I miss them, or the thing where the camera suddenly turns and auto-aim decides I want to hit a pallet or a wall or something... lately there's a new thing where we're in an open field, and the survivor stays on my screen the whole time, but then my camera jerks to the side and I miss, and I literally don't understand how or why.

And where do you generally see toxic players playing most as?

I don't think it helps to debate that.

  • I understand the thought behind this, but, the times I've been disconnected because the game crashed were often at moments where I got downed or hooked -- I don't know why. Probably the same reason people drop frames at those moments.

  • I think there's a small chance someone out there has a legitimate medical reason why they can't play the game unless they see it on stretched res, but 99.9999% of the time, it's just people trying to cheat.

  • My A-plan was to throw, so I just chased the same survivor, trying to hit them with alternating bottles -- but I wasn't sure whether the yellow cloud actually needed to be yellow when they ran through it, or if white would count -- so then I just looked pathetic at the exit gates and they let me spam my bottles at them.

To this day, I don't know what the actual conditions of the challenge are, and if anybody does, I'd like to know. They run through the purple cloud and then what -- get them to run through a yellow cloud? Hit them with the yellow bottle, even if it's not a yellow cloud yet?

  • I don't know what's going on, obviously, but my fear is that they've gotten themselves into a situation where they're basically just bailing water out of the ship for as long as they can without having the ability to patch the holes.

If that's true, I actually don't blame them for getting into this situation -- since they started out as a smaller studio and didn't expect DBD to grow to what it is today -- but there comes a point where you also have to have enough humility to realize that you need help, or that you might have to sacrifice some of your profits to improve the product.

Right now, the strategy seems to be to just keep it going as long as possible, and that worries me.

  • I wish the dailies gave you some kind of shards -- either rift shards or iri shards. I try to knock them out because I can't resist doing a task, but I don't need the bloodpoints, and I'm not excited about them.

For the auric cells: I've played a few multiplayer games, now, and I have to agree that DBD is unusual in that it offers a lot of cosmetics that you can ONLY EVER get by paying money. Every other game I can think of has some kind of path you can take to unlock the cosmetics without paying money, even if it takes eight million years -- it's theoretically possible. This game is weird in that it's not.

  • I actually don't like looking at Victor and Charlotte, which is different from other killers where I just don't particularly enjoy their design.

  • Honestly, because it's pretty easy to suck me into a loop where I keep trying to unlock the unlockables.

  • Me three. I appreciate the thought, and I agree that we should think of ourselves as all being players before we think of ourselves as killer or survivor mains, but, if you haven't played killer in a while, you were probably matching with lower ranks than you should have been. Getting 3K or 4K almost every match would seem to support that.

Is there a perk, playstyle or character you absolutely loathe?

It’s probably pretty strong. That simple. People can say they hate things because of the principle, but 90% of the time its simply the balance state. People want easier games so they “like” weaker things and despise strong things when they’re playing against them.

It's true that people feel frustrated when they go against a tactic or power that they feel they have no ability to counter, but I think that that's one of several different reasons why they could dislike something in the game.

I hate going against Leatherface, because I hate the braying donkey sound he makes when he uses his chainsaw. I hate going against Deathslinger because I don't like hearing gunshots. I hate going against teabaggers because I find it hurtful when people go out of their way to be rude. None of those things give my opponent an advantage in the match -- I just don't like them.

  • NA. I think he looks like he might be fun for some people, but he has similar VFX to Nurse, so I'm afraid I'd feel sick if I played him. Also controller. Also, I'm disappointed that his puzzle isn't actually a puzzle.

Some of our fiesty PS4 cousins experimented around and got noticeably better performance when they connected a SSD and ran the game from there. Pulsar tried the same idea with his Xbox1x (the absolute strongest of the proir gen consoles, I also have one) but sadly it had little effect, most likely due to this console already having a hybrid-SSD inside it.

One of the last patches forced all Switch machines to run this game on low graphics to improve their performance. The rest of all consoles are locked at Ultra, while PCrs can toggle their graphic settings at will.

Most of us firmly believe the lack of a thorough optimization when the game was ported over 2and the bizarre need for the game to load in each and every asset for every killer every match are at the root of our issues. Despite their age and wear our consoles are capable of running DBD just fine if it weren't for the coding.

I'll give you the same advice I always give our PC cousins: borrow a friend's PS4 or whatever and pick a killer. Let's say Doc or Freddy. Load into Lery's. Go to the center room. Let us know how it goes...

Oooooh. I didn't know consoles were locked on HD graphics. That's horrible. And the petition makes more sense to me now, too.

It would be the equivalent of having the old Ebony Mori every match.

Literally this. I was okay with Ebony Mori, because it was relatively rare, but I wouldn't have wanted it every match. From the survivor side, two downs for a kill felt way too fast.

  • Five minutes is a long time in DBD. I do kind of wish there was something that could be done when a player DCs within 30 seconds, because, at that point, the match is basically the same as if you loaded in with four players instead of five, but it's hard to come up with a system that couldn't be abused.

  • Instead of thinking about it as killers vs survivors, we should be thinking of it as toxic players vs the rest of us. The toxic players express their toxicity differently depending on whether they're on killer or survivor that day, but it's not a killer or survivor problem. It's a toxic player problem.

  • I think that with a playerbase this size, there are some blocking options that could work.

    • block a very small number of people (like 5) forever -- if you want to block a sixth person, you have to unblock someone else
    • block a larger number of people for a short amount of time (24 hours or less), so that you can't match with them back to back

Both of those solutions would stop people from spamming blocks while still giving them some ability to avoid repeatedly matching with someone who's targeting or harassing them.

It's fairer than people with lower ping losing specifically due to their opponent having a higher ping, which was what the old system enabled.

Sorry, I meant lowest. We agree -- whoever has the best ping shouldn't get total priority.

  • Long story short, I honestly think "the stun and the hit both happen, if they happen close together" is a fairer solution than giving priority to whoever has the highest ping. It's not reasonable to expect that people who have slightly worse connection speeds should play as if they can't trust what they're seeing.

  • I misunderstood when we got the update, and I thought cancelled grabs were already going to turn into hits -- not a random weapon swing that happens after the grab animation. I 100% agree it should be hits -- if the timing is close enough that the server thought you had a grab, it was definitely close enough that, if the game had just let you take the swing you wanted to take, it would have landed.

Also, experienced survivors know that you can't grab them, so they'll vault right into your face as a way to escape the tile. It's super frustrating because, as the killer, you react as fast as you possibly can and take a swing, and the server goes, "Wow you actually reacted SO fast that it's a grab instead of a swing!" and then the server's like, "No, never mind, it should have been a swing," and then you just swing at the pallet three seconds later, after they've run away.

  • You know that scene in The Breakfast Club where Bender gets into a battle of wills with the Vice Principal and whatever the VP says to him, he's just like, "So what, I don't care," to prove he's really tough? The point was that he actually did care, but he'd internalized this message from his experience with his abusive father where the only way he could resist poor treatment was to act like it didn't affect him.

You should care if people are being mean to you. That's a normal response to a negative social interaction. Pretending not to care is the response of someone who's given up any hope of being treated with respect.

  • Here's the original thread in case anyone's interested. The OP is upset about being bullied, and @TheGannMan insults them and tells them to get over it. That's what the vague apology is for.

    @Darky77 said:

I think we can all agree Dead by Daylight has it's fair share of technical problems and glitches, but there's one huge issue that's really affecting gameplay in a harsh manner. And I'm already sure I'm gonna get such positive and understanding responses for this, but it needs to be said.

Within the past year or so, every single round I have seen at least one toxic survivor. The only exception being rounds where I just completely steam roll a bunch of babies, and even then they still try to be toxic. This whole Streamer/Gamer personality, where every single "victory" (even dropping a pallet that doesn't even get a stun) neds to be over celebrated with t-bagging and clicking, survivors that know they outrank the killer feel the need to flashlight click and t-bag and whatever they possibly can think of to bully the killer into giving up.

I know complaining about it means nothing and will likely only encourage people to do it more, but seriously, what is the goal? What is the mindset? You know you outrank the killer by a lot, you know the killer is powerless and very frustrated, so what do you do? Antagonize, bully, mock, anything you can do to drive their face into the mud.

I swear PHub has a subsection that's just footage of Survivors looping and t-bagging killers. There has to be the way people act. It's just so sickeningly toxic. Why do you feel the need to punish people for playing the game and trying to learn? Why do you feel the need to scrub your victory in their face and mock them for not being able to handle four people who each individually have ten times the play hours?

People love to complain about new killers face camping and tunneling, but I get it. I don't support it, but I understand why they do it. You're so brutally punished for doing anything else, so why not get a kill or two by face camping rather then actually chase and end up getting looped, t-bagged, clicked and gen-rushed?

Honestly, with the Gen speeds being screwed up and this on top of it, the game just isn't fun anymore. And that really hurts. I love this game so much and I want to see it keep growing, but it just isn't fun anymore. You try at all and you just get screwed over by the match making and gen rushing, then bullied and mocked by toxic survivors on top of that. I seriously concede the match and open the gates, and they STILL sit there clicking and running around, desperately trying to get me to do something so they can watch me fail.

This disgusting playstyle and undying need to rub in everyone's face how good you are at the game is just ruining Dead by Daylight. New killers are punished for trying to learn the game and any kind of effort to try is met with ruthless toxicity. It's just not fun to try so hard just so four people can rub one out watching your failure to deal with four people who each outmatch you alone.

I'm not even gonna bother trying to request the behavior stop, asking gamers to stop being toxic is like asking the Earth to stop rotating, but it just needed to be said. I used to love the game and look forward to getting on each day, now I dread it. Rounds used to be 15-20 minutes, super fun back and forth gameplay that was a struggle for both sides but still achievable with effort. Now it's just a mad scramble to do as much as possible before the gates are open in 5 minutes. You either steamroll a bunch of newbies or get your face ground into the mud by toxic streamers. I was on the verge of just quitting the game altogether, but Pinhead actually turned out to be a very cool, well-balanced killer.

Yes, this is just a rant post, yes I am aware no one cares and this isn't going to change. it just sucks to now hate a game that I used to love so dearly. I still play because it's still a great game, but now I end up forfeiting 80% of the rounds I play, because I'm not gonna sit there and flail around just so some red rank can bully me and rub one out. 3 minutes into the match I just go and sit at the exit gates and wait ten seconds for the final gen to go off so I can open the gate and wait another ten minutes for all the survivors to get over their desperate attempts to bait me into trying so they can bully me further.

This isn't fun. This is all I've gotten for the past year or so. It's making me dislike the game, and I really hate that. It's way too good a game to be consumed by this Streamer/Gamer personality. It's getting a bad reputation.

  • Back to the original point -- I agree. Toxic players are the biggest problem with DBD. I tried to play tonight and every single game I loaded into, killer or survivor, I matched with at least one toxic survivor. They griefed the killer, they griefed their teammates, they said mean stuff in the chat. I literally don't understand why.

Where I differ is that I do blame BHVR, because they've created a game that facilitates bullying and then they haven't made any attempt to control the bullies. So they're making money off creating a digital environment where people can be a lot nastier than they'd get away with being in person, and they're just like, "Eh -- you know. There's a bad apple in every bunch." Maybe do something to try to sort the apples, if you're profiting off them.

  • Just adding it up in my head, I think it's around $100. I like all the things I bought, but I definitely feel stressed about how much money I've put into this game, especially since I started out saying, "I'm not going to buy any cosmetics -- that's just dumb." I'm currently trying to abstain from spending more.

  • As lots of people have said in lots of discussions, there's a difference between how this game sounds when you hear it described and how it actually plays in practice. My expectation about DBD was that it was supposed to be a stealth game where the killer eventually kills everyone (except maybe the last person sneaks out). The question for the killer was just how fast they could kill everyone, and the question for the survivors was how long they could evade detection and score points before they died.

(TBH, this is pretty much how I play survivor still -- I'm not trying to escape; I just try to score points).

In practice, though, most of the community seems to expect that the survivors should be able to escape 50% of the time rather than having an escape be super rare, and that seems to be the direction the balance has gone. I don't know if that's good or bad, but it's definitely different from what I thought I was getting when I signed up.

  • Yes.

    No.

    No.

    No.

Comments: The only real problem I have is that more than one survivor can use the same key to escape. If everything else were the same and the key only worked for the person holding it, I would be happy. As for whether you should move the gates if the hatch is gone, I still say no, because I think the random element adds something to the game -- but I don't feels super strongly about it.

  • If these changes were supposed to reduce instances where hit validation visually looks unfair (either weapon hits or stuns) it hasn't helped. It's just redistributed who it looks unfair to and how often.

  • There are spots on some maps (especially Midwich) where you can only hear the gen from one direction, and it makes no logical sense. I never trust that a gen's not being worked on unless I see it with my eyes.

  • I always play solo and I think that, the better you get at Survivor, the more you start monitoring health states across the team and trying to spread out hooks to keep people in the game. So, I've definitely run across the map to try to interfere when someone's getting tunneled and I've had other solo teammates do the same, but it is very rare. It would be nice if people did that more.

  • As far as I can tell, the conditions of the challenge are that you have to be within 10m of the killer without being in chase for 30 seconds cumulatively (not consecutively -- at least, I'm 99% sure I didn't do it consecutively). So, the attempt that worked for me, I just kind of hovered behind a wall and in the corn while my teammates were getting chased, and then, at one point, slow-climbed into a locker that someone was looping beside.

  • I dislike the mori animations, which is why I don't use moris when I play killer. When I play survivor, I would very slightly rather die on hook so I don't have to watch the animation. But, if other people want to use them, fine -- I'll go refill my water.

  • Truthfully, I don't know if this is against the rules. But, bodyblocking someone for an extended period of time and refusing to down them doesn't sound great.
