I think a good system is to have 2 rewards for each challenge. If you do it in a single trial you get extra BPs and Rift progress, but if not you can still advance the tome by doing it over a couple of games.
I'm in two minds, I like hard challenges, but my mentality when I was finishing up tome 1 was very much "Just get this finished without caring about the game itself" and thats only going to be worse with the harder challenges. Going to see a lot of thrown games trying to complete them.
At the very least, more difficult challenges should give greater rewards. In the same way that master challenges award more BPs and Rift Fragments than ordinary challenges, Tome 4 challenges should award more than those in Tome 1.
-
Queue times vary hugely by region and time of day, and they're based entirely on who is playing and in what role. In other words, the developers have basically no control over them, so I'm not sure it's really fair to blame them in this case.

Which? The time-gating? Its right there in the Archives, the reason why you cannot access Tome 2-4 yet.
No, not the time-gating, the answer to my question. The part about Tomes unlocking two weeks apart.
-
It's probably not intended that DCs should count as kills. My guess would be it's just a funny quirk in the way the game processes disconnects with regards to how they affect other players.
-
(a) People don't care as much about bloodpoints as they do about free cool skins, so enthusiasm is naturally lower than in previous events
(b) Many people's excitement for the event has waned in the week that it was delayed
(c) No one is in the mood for Halloween-themed things anymore now that it's November
(d) People care more about the bloodhunt than the event, and would therefore rather use their offering slots on BPS or gateaux than petals because they're more lucrative
Due to a combination of the above factors, my guess would be that most people just can't be bothered to grind for or use the event offerings. It's a bit sad, but it is what it is.
-
I don't hate killer, but I'm not someone who tends to overly enjoy the power trip that comes with hunting and murdering survivors, which I think is what draws a lot of people to the role. Unless I'm forced to kill people because of a mission, I almost always let everyone go at the end when I do play killer. I also tend to prefer cooperative play in general when it comes to games.
-
@AlexisFox said:
I have the right to enjoy the game that I paid for and if I don't want to play against a toxic person that only wants to grief others then I shouldn't have to. It's as simple as that.
Of course you have the right to enjoy it, but you don't have the right to demand features and expect your demands to be complied with, which is how you're coming across. If it's that important to you personally, you have already identified the solution - use MLGA.
-
I think it took me about 18 hours to complete, because killer queues were pretty bad, and I ascended 12 Rift levels in that time.
-
Okay, I've gone through all my challenges and here are my tips.
Survivor challenges
Repair 2 generators - Bring a toolbox, Commodious or Engineer's ideally, with some speed and/or additional charges addons. BNPs can also help. This Is Not Happening, Technician and Spine Chill are good perks for focusing on generator repairs. Streetwise is also good for getting the most use out of the toolbox.
Safely unhook 2 / 5 survivors - Bring Borrowed Time to make sure the unhooks are safe, and We're Gonna Live Forever because if you're going to be doing a lot of unhooking you may as well get extra points for it. We'll Make It also works well in an unhook build.
Heal 4 health states - Bring a medkit with speed and/or charges addons, Streetwise, We'll Make It and Botany Knowledge to help you heal faster, and Empathy to help you find healable teammates.
heal 2 health states using Empathy - Same as above.
Succeed at 20 skill checks - This one can be difficult to get because Ruin is so prevalent, and Ruin skill checks don't seem to count. I haven't tested this with "special" skill checks such as DS, snapping out of it, or cleansing Demogorgon portals, but I don't see why those wouldn't work. I would recommend going for a combination of healing and sabotage skill checks, rather than relying on repairs. So bring Saboteur and Empathy to help you with those healing skill checks. I would not recommend bringing anything that increases healing, sabotage or repair speed, because the longer it takes you to complete the action, the more chances you have to get skill checks.
Escape a trial as Claudette - Works with the gate or the hatch. Use your best build, to give you the best chance of escape, and bring a dull/skeleton key as a backup. Left Behind and Adrenaline are useful perks for this challenge.
Get 3 great skill checks using This Is Not Happening - Again, Ruin skill checks don't count, so go for healing and sabotage. Bring Empathy, Saboteur, This Is Not Happening and No Mither, so you don't have to find the killer and get injured in order to activate TINH. I don't think that This Is Not Happening has to actually be active in order for skill checks to contribute towards the challenge, but it does make them easier. You can also bring a medkit or toolbox with skill check zone widening add-ons.
Search 3 chests using Plunderer's Instinct - If you have a coin offering, burn it, just to make sure you can get this challenge even if one of your teammates also searches chests. It's also a good idea (in my experience, unless your teammates are huge jerks) to mention you have this mission in pregame and ask people to please not open chests. Most people are happy to oblige, since they know you'll leave good items behind for them as well. Some might even offer to burn a coin for you. Also, search the basement chest first, since that's the one other people are most likely to get to before you.
Search 5 chests - See above.
Cleanse 8 totems - Small Game is good for this, and a Rainbow Map (or a green map with a killer's belongings tracking addon) is better. Spine Chill can also be useful, as it boosts cleansing speed. Obviously it will take more than one game to complete this, but if you're lucky it shouldn't take more than two. Cleanse all 5 totems in your first game if you can, just in case things don't go so well in the second game. Like the chest searching, it's a good idea to politely ask your teammates to leave the totems to you for your challenge. You can incentivise cooperation by offering to help them with their challenges in return.
Killer challenges
Unless you have to kill everyone for the challenges, convincing the survivors to farm with you can be an easy way to get most of these. Almost all of them are achievable within a single match. Game-slowing perks, such as Ruin and PGTW, are useful in all cases to give you more time to complete challenges.
Hook 8 survivors - It just means get 8 hooks, not hook 8 different survivors, so you should be able to get this in a single match if you're lucky. Agitation and Iron Grasp are good, as well as perks which help with locating survivors, such as Whispers and BBQ & Chili. Make Your Choice, Devour Hope and other perks which require you to be far away from the hook are also good, since you want to allow survivors as much opportunity to rescue each other as possible, because you want to be able to hook everyone at least twice.
Damage 6 generators - I don't know whether this just means damage a generator 6 times or damage 6 different generators, since I did both just to be sure. Patrol widely to give people time to work on as many different generators as possible. Brutal strength can also help, and you can pair it with PGTW if you like. I've heard that another very easy way to do this challenge is to just bring Surge, since the generators it damages automatically also count.
Damage the same generator twice - See above. This should be easy to do in a single match of normal gameplay.
Damage a generator or destroy a pallet 5 times using Brutal Strength - As above. Also make sure to destroy every pallet you can, and you should be able to complete this easily.
Catch a survivor in a bear trap twice as Trapper - Use Tar Bottles to darken your traps, and a Trapper Bag to help you carry more so you get set them up more easily. Otherwise, employ general good Trapper strategies - put traps in unexpected places and/or places survivors will likely run without looking, hide them well, don't put them down when you know a survivor is looking. Alternately, if you can convince survivors to farm, this will be a breeze.
Sacrifice 1 survivor during the endgame collapse - Remember that the EGC only starts once a gate has been opened or the hatch has been closed (that is, once the endgame timer appears). I used NOED and Blood Warden for this challenge. Ideally, you want to have hooked everyone twice by the time the last generator is completed. Bitter Murmur can also help, since it helps you to find the survivors at this point, which allows you to slug someone until a gate is opened and then sacrifice them immediately. Also, if no one is opening gates and just leaving them at 99%, just open the gate yourself to start the EGC.
Sacrifice 5 survivors - Obviously, this takes a minimum of two games to complete. Just pick your favourite killer and play your best, and you should be able to achieve 5 sacrifices in two games easily enough.
Get a 4k - Same as above - just play your best. NOED can be used as insurance to make sure you get everyone. Try to play in a fair and sportsmanlike way and maybe avoid Spirit, just to minimise chances of people disconnecting and denying your 4k.
neutral challenges
I would recommend doing both of these as killer - the first because killers earn more bloodpoints on average and the second because you can scare crows without penalty as killer, whereas as survivor, you run the risk of revealing your location to the killer.
Earn 50k bloodpoints - Bloodpoint offerings did not seem to affect this one, and I'm not sure if perks do either, but you can try using Distressing or BBQ to see if it makes a difference. Just try to score highly in all categories and you should complete this challenge within two games.
Disturb 25 crows - I threw the game for this one and just walked around the perimeter of the map disturbing crows the entire match. You could probably achieve it just in a normal match, though, especially if you use game-slowing perks like Ruin and PGTW.

From what I understand, the next tome will unlock 2 weeks after the previous.
As to why they're time-gated instead of unlocking automatically when you reach the tome's Epilogue.. I suspect the developers aren't keen that people might run through the Archive's challenges and gain Rift Fragments too fast.
Oh no, it's fine, I don't have a problem with the time gating. Can you link me to where that information came from?

You make some good points, but you're suggesting that people should be punished for focusing on completing their challenges, or simply for being nice in games. That's just silly.

Always has been? Even when you're solo you have to work together.
Unless youre the guy that just sit in a locker the whole game i couldn't imagine how you wouldnt see this as a team game.
Who unhooks you? Your teammates. Who flashlight saves you? Your teammates. Whos supposed to do gens while you're distractimg/in chase with killer? Your team...? Its 100% a team based game. Its a 4v1 not a 1+1+1+1V1 . If everyone one played not realizing its a team it'd be as awful as rank 20 games go
A cooperative game is not precisely the same as a team game. Survivors are allies, not teammates. A team game is one where the entire team either wins or loses as a group. In DBD, survivors may be cooperating but their goals are independent from one another. In other words, at the end of the day, everyone is out for themselves.

As a killer I've had mostly decent games, there have been a few where survivors DC to deny me a hook, they have usually been part of an SWF though.
Survivor I've run into way more issues. People literally not letting you heal them due to them trying to run to their SWF to give them the heal etc.
One game I rescued a Tapp off of hook and wanted to heal him with my 100% increased healing and you started running away on purpose not letting me heal him, and what do you know, he ran right into the killer and went down again.
SWF survivors have really turned the event on survivor side very frustrating.
That's understandable, but of course it's also fair enough that people want to help their friends achieve challenges. As someone who plays majority SWF, I would recommend finding a group to SWF with and complete challenges together (depending on your region/platform). If that's not a possibility, the other thing you can try is explain in the pregame chat which challenge you're attempting and ask for cooperation. As you can see from my post, that's what I've been doing and it's worked quite well for me.

This a refreshing post! I will add that an apology in end game chat for any "bad manners" plays can go a long way.
I was playing a game as killer and I after I downed a Jake the last gen popped. I ran around trying to get another survivor but the rest escaped. I went back and hooked Jake.
In the chat I said, "Sorry for the slug. Things spiraled out of control for me at the end." He was basically like, "Oh ok. It's all good." Got the impression he was about to go off but a little kindness diffused the situation.
Yeah I find that as well. Kindness and humility go a long way in reducing toxicity generally, in my experience.

How is 6-8 matches a day, every day, for more than 60 days not absurd? People have jobs, school and other resposibilities. Nobody's got time for that unless they have no life.
Well, according to the devs' internal statistics, roughly 50% of Dead By Daylight players have no life, then. I don't have access to the stats, I'm just assuming they're correct because there's no reason not to. I didn't make them up. Don't shoot the messenger.
-
I've completed all challenges in the first Tome and picked up a bunch of stuff along the way, and I'm very interested in discussing it, but I'm also very tired, so I'm going to look at my game tomorrow to remember all the challenges and in the meantime leave this comment so I can find the thread again later.

That doesnt change the amount of matches needed mate, it just means you do the challenges simultanously as the matches.
Its still 8-ish matches a day, every day.
Which, as I pointed out, is apparently only slightly above the playtime of the average player. It's nowhere near as absurdly unobtainable as you're suggesting.
-
You seem not to be taking into account that you will be earning Rift Fragments through XP while you are completing challenges.
According to the devs' internal data, the average player apparently plays 1 hour a day. They originally estimated that it would take 70-80 hours to complete, therefore being completable by the average player in the 70 days allotted.
Speaking of maths on the Rift, I also did the maths based on my own experience so far. I have played about 18 hours since the patch released, completing the first Tome, and have ascended 12 tiers in the Rift. So my estimate would be a generous 120-130 hours to complete the full Rift, which is about 1.5 - 2 hours every day. Less, if you have "bonus tiers" from playing in the week or so prior to the patch release (I started at tier 5, for example). According to the devs' data, therefore, it will not be completable by the average player, but by the slightly-above-average player. Which is still not ridiculously out of reach, and in my opinion is as it should be.
-
@se05239 said:
The Rift, where you unlock the Serums, will last 70 days.. faaaar beyond the actual Halloween 'event'.
Just to clarify, this means that you'll be able to unlock the skins for that entire period as well.
Also, you don't need to use the Tomes to complete the Rift, they just make it easier. The time gating doesn't actually stop you gaining Rift progress.

Their statement about Doctor kinda scares me, mainly because of the players they balance around (yellow and green ranks). I don't want another Legion situation where a Killer who has problems is made even worse because of Survivor fun (especially when that Killer is one I play a lot). He just needs some buffs and that's it.
As a survivor, I can assure you that Legion is not fun lol. But personally, I think they did a good job with the Freddy rework, for example, and that was the same kind of QOL treatment that they're proposing for Doc. When I do play killer, Doctor is who I play, so if they can pull off something like that with him, I'll be happy. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It’s also rather hopeless as killer. You’re either lucky enough to have downed someone near an event hook, or your unlucky.
I've just been running Iron Grasp and Agitation every single game and hoping things work out in my favour.

How many Tier are there then, for Tome 1
The Rift has 70 tiers. The Tomes are more like a web, where you progress through it by completing the challenges, and every challenge you complete earns you Rift progress.
-
But you can earn petals and do generators or hooks in either role?
Unless you're talking about the challenges. In which case, you still don't need to do all the challenges to progress in the Rift, but I suppose it makes it a bit more difficult for anyone who refuses to play the other role under any circumstances. Personally, as a 99% survivor main, I see it as an opportunity to branch out.

If anyone is interested or wondering where this information came from, here's the exact quote from the stream:
"I see a lot of players and discussions putting Nurse and Spirit up there in the highest of tiers, and since changes to the Nurse happened, people couldn't help but wonder, what's going to happen now to this other character who seems like a clear outlier? The Spirit is a statistical outlier. Since we were talking before about just, like, pure success rates and what do the stats look like, the Nurse was a character who didn't have stats that were too far out of the ordinary, because, well, there's a lot of interesting stuff about the fact that she's a lot harder to play than other characters, a lot harder to pick up... Nurse didn't get changes based on the fact that she killed too many people as a whole, it was for specific issues with the killer. Spirit is a killer who's overperforming, in such a way that, yeah, there are some changes that will be coming to Spirit. I don't have what yet, I don't have when yet, but it is something that we're looking at. And we're not here to destroy any killer, or ruin anybody's fun. Like I said, any time we're looking at a killer, it's also a good opportunity to make quality-of-life improvements. We like all of our characters, we want to see all of our characters played, and enjoyed, and played against, and enjoyed."

"Nurse was not changed because she is too powerful, but due to specific issues with het kit"
May i ask what is that specific issues? If devs agree that her basekit was fine, why change it?
Basically, they said that the reason they changed Nurse had nothing to do with her stats, because unlike Spirit she wasn't an outlier in terms of kill rate or anything like that. That's what I meant about her not being "too powerful".
Hold on, I'll try to find the exact spot on the stream so you can see for yourself what they said.
EDIT: The timestamp is around 1:02:40 where they discuss that question.
Here's the quote: "I see a lot of players and discussions putting Nurse and Spirit up there in the highest of tiers, and since changes to the Nurse happened, people couldn't help but wonder, what's going to happen now to this other character who seems like a clear outlier? Yes, I believe that is what it means. Challenges in Tomes 2-4 will get progressively harder than those in the previous Tome(s). If you want to see everything they had to say about it for yourself, it's discussed in the stream (linked above) at about 0:29:45
-
A lot of people are reporting this problem on the forums, across multiple platforms. Hopefully it's something that the devs will be able to fix soon.
-
Basically, it's because back when the victory cube was a thing, a Merciless Victory as a killer just meant a 4k. They've since changed the conditions for Merciless Victories, but they haven't changed the achievements accordingly. Apparently achievements are quite difficult to make changes to, especially universal changes, because they have to be reapproved by Valve/Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo/whichever company owns the platform.

@Mochan said:
As expected.
We all knew this was coming. The Devs do have a tendency to nerf/rework things which are overperforming. That's why things like DS, MOM and Selfcare were nerfed/changed. I don't know what Spirit's Kill Rate is though but it looks like it's actually high enough out of the norm for the devs to notice.
Yes, I believe they specifically called her a "statistical outlier".

I bet it's a charm for mods. Which kinda sucks, because they specifically said they weren't going to do things like streamer/convention exclusives anymore because it wasn't fair that some people had no chance of obtaining them. I suppose mod exclusives don't count? :/

This is correct. You are revealing your aura to the killer, so the perk is active.
But doesn't that somewhat defeat the purpose of the killer's aura being hidden?
-
Disconnecting is punishable - if someone does it too much, they will be automatically banned. So rest assured, rage quitting, at least in the sense of disconnecting from the match, is definitely punished, even if it doesn't seem apparent to the average player.
-
I'm not a community manager, but I'll do my best to help. My guess would be that they do plan to fix big bugs like that, but bug fixes don't really work in terms of priority. They fix a whole bunch of seemingly meaningless bugs every patch not because those are at the top of their priority list, but because they are easy to fix. They have already identified those bugs in their testing and can easily figure out what the problem is and how to fix it, and they aim to fix as many issues, both major and minor, as they are able to with each patch. More major bugs sometimes take longer to diagnose and find a proper fix for, which is why they sometimes go a long time without fixes being implemented.
I'll tag the community managers @Peanits @Patricia and @not_Queen since your question was directed specifically at them, and hopefully they'll be able to give you a bit more insight and correct anything I might have got wrong :)
