Pretty sure a Perma-Tier 1 Myers doesn't allow Distortion to earn back any tokens.
-
Beg Netflix, not BHVR.
-
Except a lot of NetEase cosmetics are both a set and part of a gacha/banner/lootbox system.
I think we're good.
-
do you have the results of that? Can’t remember looking at them but would interest meThere are no official results as far as I am aware. But people keep bringing up that survey and the general consensus is that a lot of people didn't vote for time-limited cosmetics.
-
Worst part is they asked if we were okay with time-limited cosmetics in a previous survey, in which the majority answered no.
The fact that they still want through this is furiously disgusting. Hoping we get some answers if they do another Q&A.
-
This is the only one I can think of:
-
Boons aren't a problem.
It's Circle of Healing that is. Just that one.

which is really one of the worst ideas they could have. Like... they do know lotsa people, even if they don't celebrate xmas spend money on other stuff this month and in jan?
Capitalism doesn't care. It's money now or never.

Reminder that all Ugly Sweaters will be taken off the store January 4th!

I would guess so, but they haven’t officially stated yet. We are also missing the sweaters for the licensed characters that released this year (or have they been added now?)
Not yet, later this month

I completed it... November 12th
I might have a problem

I thought it was just the new ones? Things like Dwelf or Santa Clowns has been available for like...ever.
Well, they won't be anymore!

God, this situation sucks.
90 cosmetics gone. NINETY.
Truly, the new "every cosmetic will be available through shards later" initiative is hurting us so much.
-
Yep, it would be great.
-
Trying to have fun in this event is hard, the new FOMO rules really ruined it for me
-
True. But it still could be better if every cosmetic & charm would come to the in-game store after a while.

It isn’t on sale until December 22nd.
and then it will be immediately removed two weeks later...
Yeah see, it makes more sales to... make the product less available to buy.
Clearly geniuses.

Funnily enough, Game Maker's Toolkit covered the subject of FOMO too, citing also a lack of studies on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1kbBcm9XRI

Thanks for the insightful comment, I imagine it must have been a lot of work going through the thesis. The only thing I'm getting from this passage is that there are indeed people who fall prey to this sort of making-use-of-addiction marketing (by lack of a better term. I'm not a native speaker, sorry.) Do you perhaps have any data points to support this, besides this anecdote? Not trying to sound rude, I'm deeply sympathetic to those suffering from addiction, but would you happen to have something that we could more broadly use?
Gotta admit, it's kinda hard to find raw data.
-
The expectations were: they asked us about such practices in a survey, it seemed the majority said no, and yet they did it anyway.
So yeah, there's a reason to complain beyond the greedy aspect: they confirmed they do not give any value to our feedback.
-
Hahaha, they restrict the sweater behind time limits but they can't even get that part right.

how the ######### is this a scummy practice, is every one here living under a rock?
Games have been doing this for a long time.
Im an Advocate of they should release skins and then never release them again or maybe in a different color.
You guys should be lucky they even come back.
Scummy is bringing back the Battle Pass items to be purchased in the shop, thats not how Battle Passes work in other games. its either you get them or not.
My god, video games got you all broken.

Those.

Having looked at the abstract and conclusion, I see the following points being made.
1) Cosmetics are, at times, used to gain a gameplay advantage (e.g. the example they give of the dancing emote.)
2) Cosmetics make the player feel immersed.
3) "Some cosmetics [...] [help] people fit into peer groups." (and can thus divide people into "haves" and "have-nots" (p.89))
I'm not exactly seeing any points about damage to mental health by missing out on limited skins, but if you could point me to a page where it's discussed I'd be happy to take a look. One can argue that, by having such a skins system, people might feel "excluded" (i.e. a "have-not") and therefore be upset, but this is not limited to limited-time cosmetics.
On pages 55 & 56:
In “The Addictive Cost of Predatory Videogame Monetization,” game critic and former games journalist Jim Sterling says it’s easy to suggest that people who overspend on games should just be smarter with their money. But as they argue, a person can’t just switch off an addiction to gambling or shopping even if they know the behavior is harmful. They also say that addiction can be a symptom of or response to other problems with mental health.“The place where I once found distraction and salvation is now preying upon my addictive nature and impulse spending problems. It hurts, it really does,” the source told Sterling. “It’s this weird mentality of ‘It’s only here for a limited time, and if I don’t get it now I may never get it again and not complete my collection.’ Hitting that ‘buy now’ button, seeing the rewards pop up, the spinning of the dice or slot wheels ticking past the rare loot. The ‘just one more’ rationale. It completely overrules any common sense like: ‘You need this money to pay the rent, or your medical bills, or food."A link to Sterling's video:

And yes, some replies are calling the twitter post on that.

If you could link some of these studies, that would be nice. I'd be interested. I understand that this situation is irritating to people, but I don't understand why people claim this is some sort of huge assault on their mental health. They're skins.
I would suggest this thesis. But I'm currently trying to find something more precise.

Strapped for cash or busting at the seams, I'm a proponent of solid frameworks. If you make a bunch, instead of lowering your prices (unless your prices are absurdly priced compared to the average cost of living), reinvest that in other ventures or community endeavors. (though screw paying off shareholders interested in causing inflation through year by year acceleration of profit).
And IMO while it may seem like FOMO from a short-term perspective, seasonal items IMO are in the long run not FOMO, and help make seasonal events more prominent with a change in the store while reducing store clutter at other times.
Seasonal items are still FOMO, even in the long run. FOMO is FOMO, there is no exception. Twitch Prime cosmetics is FOMO, charms from previous rifts are FOMO, anniversary crowns and others cosmetics events are FOMO.
If you're afraid of cluttering the store with the amount of cosmetics, perhaps a better idea would have to improve the store instead of cutting potential sales of those cosmetics. Kinda seems oblivious to me.

There was a question of time limited cosmetics on last survey, right? Is that related?
Yes, and we assume it's related. We all thought the majority of people answering that survey was a big NO on that question. But here we are.
Also, in the same survey, there was a question on time-limited chapters.

Well this is what the halloween shop looked like in overwatch 2
Both are available but it's often the skins in bundles are not available for purchase standalone.
100 coins is roughly = 1$
The discount is always different/whatever price they wanna try and sell it for
The difference between the witch bundle with a skin, potg intro, weapon charm, player icon and name card compared to other legendary skins is 700 coins/7$ The discount is artificial because those items were never for sale individually in the first place.
The defenders in the castle bundle in this screenshot is not actually 85% off it's because the player already had 3/4 of of those skins but full price that bundle was 4400 coins IIRC. So it was 1100 per skin
I haven't played apex in 2 years so i am not up to date with that game.
When bundles offer exclusive skins then they are usually just a way to make more money rather than give the consumer value. They are designed to look like they give a lot of value but in reality they don't.
Apex basically does the same, but they kept the lootboxes.
-
That's the Fear of Missing Out you're describing, aka FOMO.
-
I agree with the entirety of those demands.
@OrangeBear said:
Sorry but bundles are an even worse idea. They are a way to force people to buy other stuff that they didn't want to buy in the first place to get people to make a larger purchase. Apex and Overwatch 2 the communities have a lot of issues with them.
I assume OP means without removing the possibility to buy each cosmetic separately from the bundle.
-
I was mad about this during the Halloween event, so I decided to "vote with my wallet" and buy Cheryl's Princess Heart set because that one isn't part of a time-limited collection.
I wanted to show BHVR that I'm willing to buy cosmetics on things that matter to me, I want to support that company, those people, those artists and devs (and others that I'm clearly forgetting).
One month later, what did I learn? That every collection is susceptible to be put into those imaginary time constraints, that "vote with your wallet" is complete BS, and I shouldn't complain about it, because there are bigger problems, that I'm weak minded, that my parents did a awful job on me, that I'm an entitled person.
Thanks.

That's the thing I do understand but only when there IS something to lose as in once it's gone it's gone forever if BHVR was doing that ibwould agree with the shady biasness tactics....but when they specifically said that the cosmetics are coming back next year then to me it's not FOMO or underhanded.
With that being said it's a buy now or just wait til it comes back around. We don't know how the prices will change or if shards will be a option but a company needs to make money either buy selling new copies of a game, expansions, dlc, or cosmetics so we shouldn't expect EVERYTHING to be made to use shards.
I'm fine with not everything being available with shards.
But paying with auria cells should be a privilege that removes constraints of grinding enough shards to buy the same cosmetic.
That privilege is gone since you will have to wait a whole year now. Does it makes you want to spend money like this? I don't think so.

It's a non issue and doesn't matter. If you don't want it all you have to do is not buy it. If you want it buy it. People are saying borderline tinfoil hat level stuff about this. It's a holiday item being sold in said holiday, it's cute that's all.
Clearly you need to catch up on previous threads, because you couldn't be more naïve than that.
-
@Steakdabait said:
seasonal items has been a thing for as long as people had both markets and holidays.

BHVR did not make that

PJs are now considered holiday-themed. Don't ask, shut up, buy and consume.

Earnable event cosmetics? Yes, through the winter tome along the Bone Chill event.
New outfits for shards? Not anymore.
