Ah of course, buying things online isn't real.

I’m not here to make friends, so I don’t really care about that.
So you can walk into a Target in March and buy a Christmas sweater? No.
No but you can order it online. Did you forget about Internet? The very thing you're using right now?
-
Yes you can buy seasonal things year round in the real world.

Then why are people buying them?
They have the privilege to not care about those tactics?
They do not even know there are time limits now?
Who knows?

Cosmetics don't affect gameplay.Cosmetic microtransactions, the act of paying for virtual items that customize certain parts of video games and virtual worlds such as skins that change the appearance of the avatar, are looked upon more favorably in the gaming community than performance-enhancing microtransactions, where one pays for virtual items that enhance the abilities of avatars or speed up the progression of the game. Video game industry spokespeople have adapted this rhetoric and emphasized that the microtransactions in their games are for cosmetic items only with no bearing on gameplay. However, the way players use cosmetic items in games and the way cosmetic items inspire certain game mechanics suggest that their function in games isn’t purely ornamental. Using Fortnite as a case study, I argue that cosmetic items can influence gameplay and that the lucrative aspects of cosmetic microtransactions influence game design. Players use cosmetic items not only to be fashionable, but as tools to fashion their own metagames - games within, around, and outside of games. Game companies know that players care about cosmetic items and avatar customization, and they design their games to make cosmetic items as desirable as possible. Cosmetic microtransactions help us understand that visual design is one of the biggest influences on gameplay and the business of games. -
It's actually quite nice to have cosmetics that won't be available forever.People complaining about legacy prestige cosmetics for YEARS prove you wrong.

Why do you think that? As I just said to the Garlic person, why do you believe yourself to be so special that the game should drop what they (the creators of the game) want to do? Please don’t say “because I’ll quit if they don’t” if you were going to quit you would’ve done that already, and not pulled out a soap box to preach in the forums.
Who said I'm special?!
-
See, if anti-consumerism is almost indistinguishable from capitalism...
... Are we all ready to have this discussion?
-
Then people should stop pointing out other collections that aren't time-limited as being not that bad as a problem.
Because it can change at any day.

Ok. They're just skins i don't understand why so many people are pulling their hair out and spewing essay post after essay post. BHVR makes them to sell them for money, if you don't wanna spend money don't spend money.
What if... you want to spend money but the thing you want to spend money on isn't available until 10 months later?
Will you still want to spend money by then?

We deserve better than this, come on now.

Ah, thanks yea I just found it in another thread, okay see now THAT I am not okay with. Changing the rules for past outfits (even if I already do have the ones I care most about) I don't like.
To add even more, Dwight & Jane's Halloween outfits weren't the only ones to disappear after the event ended.

Like I said, it has the opposite effect. All you're doing is proving how much demand there is for these cosmetics.
Voting with your wallet is enough, it's representative of your voice. You get one vote, just like everyone else.
Just because everyone else is voting against you and funding these marketing tactics, doesn't mean your vote isn't worth just as much as theirs. It means you're the minority.
The minority? Have you seen the state of the recent discussion homepage? Almost half of it is threads about this situation. Does it look like a minority to you?

Can I get a link to this news report? All I have found is that the new Deck the Trials ones will be removed until next year, nothing about the past Christmas ones being removed. I even saw a post from Mandy that clarified that only the Deck the Trials ones are being removed.
Here, launched my game just for you:

From a business standpoint it is.
Vote with your wallet.
The current society show that voting with my wallet isn't enough, so I'm voting by complaining about it here.
Is there a problem with that?

Yea, just look at the Wesker one. That's Time-Limited. Oh, wait it isn't.
Do you have a guarantee it will never become time-limited in the future?

You know what I mean. No need to nitpick.
Cosmetics are a high value item. Thus they have all the cause to market them and make them as exclusive as they like, and play on their consuner base.
Every other business works the same way.
Buy the new limited edition 2022 Balenciaga iphone!
Being normalised isn't equivalent to being justifiable.
-
"does the fact that you can't buy it in June... REALLY matter that much?"Yes.
🙂
-
@Seraphor said:
By all means let them know, but do we need to have 100 topics a day about this?
Jesus Christ, they're just cosmetics, all this fuss about them just proves how much of a commodity they are, and how lucrative it is to charge money for them.
If this forum is anything to go buy, BHVR aren't in the business of developing games, they just produce fancy 3D artwork that the masses go crazy over and will pay a high price for.
The more you complain about them costing money, the more you convince BHVR that they should be charging money for them!
Just don't buy them. I'm not.
The problem was never about cosmetics costing real money?...

Next is: You are going to buy a limited time cosmetic, and they will also be limited time play, only during the events
That's Team Fortress 2's Halloween event cosmetics you are describing right now.

I play two PvP games regularly -- DBD and Knockout City. And lately I've been feeling bad for the studio that makes Knockout City because they went out of their way to give me all kinds of cool stuff for free, and I've hardly bought anything even though I love the game. And then, on the other side, there's DBD, where I'm ashamed of how much I've spent but it feels like the game's always greedy for more.
Like, is BHVR going bankrupt? Do they have no money? I'm pretty sure Dave gave a GDC presentation once where he talked about how they tried to monetize the game without being evil -- is that still a concern? Why do I feel like I'm constantly getting squeezed?
Props to you. I wanted to enjoy Knockout City upon realising that the main way to buy cosmetics is through a rotation store. Why is everyone is trying to be Fortnite so bad?
-
You will get those sweaters for free during the Bone Chill event. Then they will be unavailable to obtain until December 2023 when they will return to the in-game store available for cells only. And they will disappear again. Until December 2024. And then... Milk.
-
...Did Dave really used that wording? Monetising without being evil?... because they failed to do so with that during Halloween.
-
Ah! As if.
-
Absolutely agreed.

Have you ever tried buying a pumpkin in July? Good luck finding one
So you're telling me it's possible? Thanks.
-
Because making them seasonal is like banning selling pumpkins all the year except during October.
Does it make sense? No? There.

Blame and accountability are two completely different concepts. But per your comment, should we then blame bars for making alcoholics? Casinos for making gamblers? At what point does a business bear responsibility for the mental health of the consumer, and at what point does a consumer bear responsibility for their mental health?
Yes and yes. Next question, please.
-
No, being themed after the name of the collection doesn't make those cosmetics special.
Look at all other holiday-themed collection that aren't on yearly rotation.
-
You're right, those FOMO tactics are reminiscent of desperate crypro traders.
-
If people need therapy just to do purchases, I don't think the blame is on those people

I think in their license agreement with Valve anything with Bill has to have free option. It's why he's a free licensed character, his cosmetics are all available for shards, and his cosmetic/charms were all in the free track when he had a rift tome. I could be wrong but pretty sure he's safe from being auric cell only.
I know. I'm laughing now because it's gonna time-limited... but only accessible with shards. Why? Because of seasons? That's not a good reason
-
This is a disaster.
-
It will be worse, just look at the chinese mobile version of DbD. Pretty sure that's the endgoal.
-
@Jay_Whyask said:
So, are we changing our steam reviews to negative?
I feel like "removing cosmetics from the game so we can sell them for auric cells later" is pretty good reason to change our reviews.
I already did change mine. The situation begins with the halloween event and we had to wait until December to get a response from the devs.
It's not minsformation to assume the worst case scenario if we lack any confirmation. It's a genuine human reaction.
-
I know this is kinda naïve to post that but I would like to remind people that want to protest this to not just limit yourself to the forums:
- Reply your resentment to any official post on DbD's social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter; etc...)
- Post a negative review of the game if the platform in which your own a copy of the game allows you to do (Steam does)
- Do not stop protesting after the winter ends and the collections are gone. Don't wait the next seasonal event (Lunar New Year?) to complain again.
-
Realising that Bill's ugly sweater is only available via shards, will be removed, and reintroduced next year... via shards only because I'm pretty sure that DbD isn't allowed to make money off Bill's inclusion into the game.
Yeah, that makes sense!
-
To not break the forum rules this time... I hope the people responsible for this new decision will backtrack after realising they are erasing a lot of trust between the devs and the community.
I feel like this decision wasn't made wisely at all.
-

Nobody cries when other live service games do seasonal skins but when DBD does it it's "scummy" lol. Don't get me wrong I'd prefer it if they didn't do this but let's not pretend anything out of the ordinary for the industry at large is happening.
Compared to other games, we have a way to send feedback through those forums. Try do the same with the Apex reddit, go ahead.

DbD isn't retail.

@Supernaut said:
Sorry, but can we have confirmation on the Sweaters being time limited? That, or point us in the direction of the source? Many thanks!
-
Welp, another problem created by the FOMO.
Those characters you are complaining about having no enough cosmetics options? Oh see, you weren't just there in time.
🤡
-
There is no magic in those seasonal "rules". I know it's December but I can still search up and buy halloween stuff today if I wanted to.
None of those merchandise became illegal or unavailable to buy once October ended, it's just the advertising & marketing that has stopped.
... So why are we not allowed to buy those cosmetics whenever we want, instead of being pressured of doing so now?
-
"They have virtually no impact on game play" yet, people are more inclined to play certain characters if they have a nice cosmetic they care about.
That sentence was never true in DbD and in any other game.
-
I'll be shocked if they were.
-
Being seasonal doesn't excuse #########. There is nothing special about those outfits justifying those scummy time frames.
-
Yes.

Still no answers from BHVR, but don't worry! It's not gonna stop them from doing so: https://deadbydaylight.com/news/store-collection-release-chapter26/
