  • I last played on Tuesday. I'm a low MMR killer as it is, but that night, I was getting MURDERED. SWF after SWF after SWF...I was getting matched up with teams and players I had NO BUSINESS playing against in the first place, and the repeated losses weren't getting me any better matches, just more of the same. Very frustrating.

    MATCHMAKING

This game has a love/hate relationship with me. When teamed with good team mates, and same level killer, it's great, fun, even when dying 😂.

But playing a survivor against a top ranked killer 🗡 There is no fun. Games are short and death is quick. Then trying killer and put against super survivors that do gens quickly and loop with such proficiency, very frustrating.

I would rather wait longer for a more evenly matched game.

    Anyway, That's what I want for Christmas 🎅 🎄

This. As killer, I find that, more often than not, I go from getting easy 4ks straight to getting absolutely crushed. Rarely is there an in-between that feels balanced, where both kills and escapes feel well-earned.

Who are you to dictate that it's not warranted?

And it's been stated repeatedly, by multiple people, across like a dozen threads, that the way this sort of marketing exploits certain mental health is well studied and taught. Why, exactly, do you (and so many other people) keep dismissing this point? Do you automatically assume that anything you disagree with in a conversation has been fabricated?

Because holy #########, the regularity with which a few people jump to saying others are sounding narcissistic and entitled for explaining a well known phenomenon and how a marketing technique works and is taught is ridiculous. 'Common sense' is not a substitute for actual subject matter knowledge, which is what this keeps coming down to: "from my perspective this is minor and unimportant, so I'm going to ignore anything that involves knowledge I don't have".

I'm not claiming it's fabricated, but it does beg the question: where are they? Why do they need you to speak for them? Are they incapable of speaking up for themselves? And do you truly not realize that the absolute silence from the very demographic you're claiming to defend just makes your case appear more superficial and shallow?

And to repeat myself from another thread: these are marketing techniques. Not Jedi mind tricks.

  • The biggest issue for me is that the level of outrage simply isn't warranted here. At the end of the day, this is a minor business decision, a cash grab that will only net them a brief surge of revenue, and yet people are acting like this is some villainous plot concocted for the sole purpose of making everybody miserable. Not only that, but as they go to greater depths to argue their case, going so far as to invoking mental health issues, they become completely oblivious to just how entitled, narcissistic, and superficial their grievances sound, which does nothing to help their cause, and absolutely invites all manner of pushback. I've tried very hard not to be insulting to anyone while discussing this, but I can't pretend to hide the fact that I find this level of indignation appalling. I've already said in other forums, it's okay to be mildly disappointed. But this level of anger? Does anybody know what is going on outside of this community, and outside of this game, and ultimately how pedestrian and insignificant this issue really is?

Incidentally, with regards to the "misinformation": Mandy said that because numerous individuals were going about stating with assumed authority that the outfits would not be available for shards next season. The truth is, no one knows, but if folks are running around flatly claiming "the skins won't be available for shards next season," that IS spreading misinformation.

It's not at all like a loveless marriage because I can still have fun playing DbD and there is literally no comparable game currently.

I just know I could have so much more fun if they did DbD right, balanced maps, killers and perks and made QoL changes that would make it so we can spend more time in matches and not waste it looking for perks or doing bloodwebs.

If they did that, then I'd happily pay cash for every DLC and be much more liberal with my money because then they would have earned it.

The only thing I am going to divorce myself from is this conversation with you.

Ah, I see what you did there. 😉👍

How about the exploit that allows people to get your ip and than ddos you that bhvr has known about for nearly a year and has left unfixed. That is a pretty big security flaw that should've been addressed already. That is just one bug. How about the fact that playstation users have been walking on egg shells the past few weeks because of a bug that makes it so they have to completely restart their game due to them being unable to move at all. Which sucks to be them if they used any items or offerings because they're now wasted.

I could go on but I won't. We can't change your mind anyway.

    I appreciate your restraint. 🙂

I'm happy enough playing DbD until a competitor steps up and knocks it out of the park since BHVR has left the door open.

I haven't given BHVR a cent in over 16 months so I've voted with my wallet. I'm getting my money's worth now.

Happy enough with a "crap game?" Sounds like you have pretty low standards. 😂

Selling things to children is not illegal, last time I checked

Nor is selling clearly fake things, as long as I don't break copyright rules

But that of course was an example, I'd get my kneecaps smashed by some angry parent in that situation, and I wouldn't blame them.

Both actions take advantage of vulnerable people though, children on one hand, people with impulse control issues on the other, why should one be different than the other?

But see, in your example, your target is a demographic with under-developed decision-making skills and an inability to visualize life more than 24 hours into the future. In the present situation, we're talking about grown-ass adults. Do you mean to equate people susceptible to FOMO with having child-like minds incapable of knowing what is in their best interests? Because that's kind of my takeaway from this really poor comparison.

These are marketing techniques. Not Jedi mind tricks.

Please leave than if you dont care so much. I don't have time to change your mind. Once again not everyone has money during the time of year people spend the most and to make skins limited time to where instead I can buy it where I will have money eventually is predatory.

But...they'll be back next season. Plenty of time to put money aside for what you can't get the first time around, right?

Here's what I sincerely want to know: what terrible thing will happen if you can't get everything you want before the end of the season? How exactly will your life be negatively impacted if you can't buy an Xmas skin in March, or July? What irreparable trauma will you endure if you "miss out?"

  • I'm talking about the kind where all the DLC content, skins, and everything are behind a paywall with an annual cost that can equal the cost of the game itself.

DbD could be a massive profit-generating genre-defining giant if they took more of that profit of theirs and reinvested it back into DbD and we had things like non-buggy gameplay, faster bloodwebs, a perk search bar among other things. If DbD had evolved into an actual AAA game it would be coasting along with 100k or more players on Steam Charts and then maybe it would start to compare with EA.

But instead it's still a crap game and they are trying to make as much money off it as they can before it dies. They've been taking the money and running for years now.

Comparing them to EA doesn't change anything. Just because they need more revenue doesn't give them the right to use scummy business practices. Only a company shill would defend that position.

And that's what's amusing about this whole situation. You've already vilified BHVR because their product doesn't perform to your expectations (plays just fine for me, and what bugs are in the game aren't worth getting heated over), and now you're mad at their business practices...and yet HERE YOU ARE. If you think the game is crap and you hate the way BHVR does business, stop playing. Leave the community. Nobody's forcing you to be here. Why would you stay if it makes you unhappy?

  • @ByeByeQ said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3287242#Comment_3287242

I said return on investment. Clearly EA invests much more into Madden than BHVR invests into DbD. BHVR made less than EA but a higher percentage of their 300 million is pure profit.

Why are we comparing BHVR to EA? It's like comparing apples to eggplants.

We're comparing EA and BHVR because you have a skewed perspective of how gloriously wealthy you think BHVR is. They're a small company trying to grow, and that requires more revenue. This is hardly the dirtiest way they could've chosen. Imagine if they had tried to implement some sort of Season Pass scheme?

And you're wrong about EA and Madden. Ask any Madden player, they'll tell you: they've been copy-and-pasting that game for over a decade, and yet they make more and more off of it every year. That's what happens when you have the exclusive license to the NFL and no other market competition.

  • @ByeByeQ said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3287234#Comment_3287234

The return on investment BHVR has made from DbD has been astronomical, because it's damn near an indie quality game that they are able to charge more than a AAA price for while adding F2P monetization tactics on top.

They have to be Scrooge McDucking into pools of gold and wiping their behind with Benjamin Franklin's face.

EA makes $1 billion dollars ANNUALLY off of the Madden franchise alone, and you think BHVR making $300 million is "astronomical?" EA is your Scrooge McDuck, my friend.

I dunno... maybe with the millions of dollars they are already raking in?

Don't even think that they have to resort to scummy monetization tactics to keep the lights on and the rent/mortgage paid. They're lining their shareholders pockets at the expense of their players.

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot BHVR was a mega-company like EA, and they're all rolling around naked in piles of cash and lighting cigars with $100 bills. Gimme a break.

  • @GoodBoyKaru said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3287210#Comment_3287210

And you know how to generate that additional revenue?

Launching a new IP, which was in development long before FOMO and so can't be the reason for this change (Meet Your Maker), or improving the popularity of an existing product (such as Dead By Daylight), by actively listening to the community or collaborating with another popular IP (I imagine Dead By Daylight: Resident Evil: The Winters Saga, or Dead By Daylight: Resident Evil: Los Illuminados would sell particularly well around this time considering Shadows of Rose came out like a month and a half ago and RE4make is coming out very soon).

Alternatively, just engage in some scummy business practices to make a quick buck while hyperfixating on exploiting the most vulnerable part of your playerbase.

    Both can work.

And I'm sure that's what BHVR was thinking when they made the decision to build the Toronto studio and acquire the developers in Seattle. They can't live off of DbD forever, but launching new IPs while maintaining current ones requires expanding the operation. Just the development stage of a new IP alone can cost untold millions of dollars, depending on what's involved. You can't fund it in a vacuum.

  • @GoodBoyKaru said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3287194#Comment_3287194

I'm sure there are plenty of people working at BHVR who could've looked at the costs and gone "Hm maybe this is too expensive and we should tone it back and go for a more long-term development plan" instead of doing it all in a single year and needing to resort to FOMO to keep the funding going.

When you look at something and see that it isn't feasible based on current data, you usually increase your resources (revenue) before deciding to reinvest the profits and become more dynamically efficient and not afterwards.

Even if you wait to stack more money, you can't fund expansion with a static pile of cash. You still need to increase revenue and bring in new money to pay your additional employees, utility costs, property leases, etc. No matter which way you slice it, company growth = additional expenses = need for greater revenue.

  • @GoodBoyKaru said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3286895#Comment_3286895

If BHVR are able to make an estimated CA$300 million, open a new studio in Toronto, increase employees by roughly 30% and acquire Seattle based game development Studio Midwinter Entertainment then I don't think they're that strapped for cash that they need to turn to FOMO.

Acquiring a studio, building a studio, and increasing your workforce involved taking on increased expenses to maintain that growth, especially when it comes to payroll. How do you think they're gonna pay for all that?

This is not the crusade you think it is. We're not talking about alcoholics and junkies being baited with booze and drugs.

News flash: ALL of us miss out on a variety of assets and opportunities EVERY SINGLE DAY of our lives. It's nothing new. It's nothing special. It's about prioritizing. It's about making choices. And at some point, one must be accountable for the choices they make. PERIOD.

And is the customer responsible for BHVR deciding that exploiting their weak points is the best thing to do with skins? Are those who haven't had the same opportunities you have to address their difficulties deserving of this targeting?

The only staggering thing here is how many people read this thread and go "all these people criticising the business choice are just complaining because of entitlement" when so many have said they aren't buying the cosmetics or thinking about doing so anyway. It is, apparently, completely impossible for so many posters to wrap their heads around "someone can take issue with a decision without being personally affected by it, because empathy and ethical standards exist."

I have empathy for schizophrenics. I have empathy for cancer victims. I have empathy for poor people living on the streets who can't find a warm place to live during the winter.

I DO NOT - NOR WILL I EVER - have empathy for someone who is afraid of "missing out" because the entire collection of seasonal digital skins aren't made available to them year-round.

And IDK, hungry people are vulnerable for what reason, exactly? Being hungry is not a medical condition

While for example having ADHD, which impacts your impulse control is a medical condition

I have ADHD. I have poor impulse control.

I take medication. I went to therapy. I learned to manage my poor impulse control.

BHVR is NOT responsible for the mental health of the consumer. That is the consumer's responsibility.

That the new cosmetics are seasonal is a bummer but understandable. HOWEVER old already released cosmetics are being pulled out as well. With 0 confirmation if they will be auric cells only. Not to mention that they previously stated that ALL ORIGINAL cosmetics become purchasable with shards BUT NOW NOT ALL OF THEM bc seasonal cosmetics are somehow extempt from that.

Do you see the scummy behavior or still are blind?

They always say something but twist it two posts later. It feels like right hand has no idea what the left one does.... And it's very very sad. Everytime you think they listens to community they pull stuns like this.

    It's been SIX. YEARS.

If you've been here a while and haven't gotten the old seasonal outfits, clearly they are not a priority.

If you're new to the game, you'll likely understand the concept of seasonal items being available for a limited time.

  • The funniest part is, after all the outrage, and after all the tears, you folks will STILL throw money at BHVR and feed their marketing strategy, because apparently, something HORRIBLE will happen if you don't collect the entire set - you'll MISS OUT!!!

    Casinos in certain cases, yes

Respectable bars BAN alcoholics from their places to protect them and their clientele. Think about that.

"In certain cases?" Which cases? And who makes that call?

Bars cut off drunks because of codes and laws, and because of the provable fact that alcohol poisoning will kill you. I'm still waiting to hear about the scores of people who've died because they missed out on a limited skin.

  • And that accomplishes what, exactly? Other than giving the alcoholic and the gambler the notion that THEY don't have a problem, it's those nasty businesses who are to blame?

  • @BarnesFlam said:

If people need therapy just to do purchases, I don't think the blame is on those people

Blame and accountability are two completely different concepts. But per your comment, should we then blame bars for making alcoholics? Casinos for making gamblers? At what point does a business bear responsibility for the mental health of the consumer, and at what point does a consumer bear responsibility for their mental health?

  • @Ryuhi said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3285052#Comment_3285052

Because you're saying that the practice is fine, despite it being documented as problematic and manipulative to the point that even Forbes articles acknowledge it, and shifting the blame onto the vulnerable person instead of the company knowingly and even retroactively applying it after people have been investing in the game for years.

This is known as victim blaming, you are blaming the people with any form of impulse control vulnerability that these changes are literally designed to take advantage of rather than the company putting forth said practices.

I'm not vilifying you, your stance is. I'm just trying to help you understand what you're actually saying in the event that you don't actually mean it, and are just ignorant to the direction your stance carries.

And placing the sole blame at the foot of the company dulls any sense of urgency for individuals to seek the help they need. How is that any better?

  • @Ryuhi said:

Telling people that their vulnerability is less important than the profits of a company is, but thats not the message you are trying to convey and you truly and honestly care about these people's well being, don't you. It wasn't even remotely a responsibility and blame shift disguised as well meaning concern, right?

I think you're trying to vilify me, but you're doing a terrible job of it. I said they need therapy more than skins, as in mental health should take priority. I literally place value of mental health over profit in my sentence structure. I ask you again, how is that dehumanizing?

The illogical arguments presented throughout this thread baffle me. It makes perfect sense to release a HOLIDAY skin during the appropriate holiday… This should be the case for each and every holiday skin, not just the Christmas ones. The argument has also been made that they are “scummy” for doing this, and “greedy” and I am shocked that a community that demands the greatest computer programmers that have ever lived be readily available at their beck and call, but oh no you better not be making any money while catering to my every need! Are you serious? Making holiday skins exclusive to holidays makes them feel more special, and yes more sought after. 2 birds with 1 stone. Create a demand with a special item, and make a little coin in the process. That’s just smart business.

    This. All day.

  • @Ryuhi said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3284865#Comment_3284865

Thats not how FOMO works. Or rather, I guess it would be more accurate to say thats how it does.

FOMO preys on people who are vulnerable to impulse spending, using the concept of regret as kindling to get them to spend. Its a very manipulative marketing tactic that takes advantage of people who have a hard time controlling their spending/budgeting, encouraging them to make purchases (that they would otherwise be able to rationalize away from) which is why it is so often looked down upon. This is also why its such a popular tactic in various F2P games and MMOs, its both scummy and unfortunately effective, and its effect grows with investment.

Having limited time availability followed by continuous availability is one thing, but this form of recurrent seasonal limited time availability or whatever is being done here, while also retroactively making previous permanently available items limited time only for absolutely zero logistical reason other than to force said FOMO manipulation is an extremely consumer hostile approach.

It sounds to me that some people are susceptible to FOMO...

You're one of those guys i see. Well, i'm just gonna leave it here. Enjoy abusing broken aspects in this game, because you enjoy getting easy matches against solo queue teams, where 1 could have thousands of hours, and the rest have under 20 hours. As long as killer mains can complain about everything, BHVR will just make it easier for them.

Yeah, I'm one of those guys who like a direct answer to a direct question. I'm weird like that. The fact that you can't (or won't) answer it just tells me that YOU'RE the one looking for something to complain about. Best go get some ice for that butt. 😉

  • @Audiophile said:

I never said camping/tunnelling wasn’t valid. It’s clearly allowed. But if you’re primarily a Type B, you have no basis for saying you’re a good killer just because you get 4ks.

I’m not changing the premise that the game design is flawed. Type B seem to think they’re ‘smart’ by playing this way. The flaw they exploit is that survivors have to save their teammates for the most part. Not only that but most games are solo and there is no coordination so teammates will almost always be saving off the hook. And again… fine. Smart play if you want to be a Type B and just get 4ks. You’re just not a good killer and can’t claim to be so.

And let’s not get distracted by the outliers… times when survivors hook dive, or endgame with 2 survivors left, whatever… I’m talking about killers, and there are a TON OF THEM, that most play Type B style yet think they’re ‘good’ at killer. I maintain no. You’re not. Type B play is for those that aren’t good enough to win as Type A… or are just lazy or toxic I guess.

Let me ask you a question: why do you care what other people think of themselves? Why is skill such an important and tender subject for you? If I do something a certain way, and it produces results, what's to dissuade me from continuing such behavior? Absolutely nothing. I'm going to keep doing it. Why? Because I don't care about being the most "skillful" player in the game. It's irrelevant. My skills (or lack of skills) at a video game mean precisely DICK in the real world; it doesn't pay my rent, and it doesn't feed my kids.

If anything, I feel like the obsession over skill says more about the accuser than the accused. It's a shame some people can't have fun for the sake of fun, and always feel the need to measure themselves against others.

  • @PapaQuintus said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3283936#Comment_3283936

Yes, all you have to do is gather enough stacks (8) which is not the hardest thing in the world to do trust me. Then you just facecamp the hooked survivor, if someone comes for the rescue, you keep hitting them because the recovery time gives you so much windows to follow it up again on the same survivor unhooking, or if another survivor comes aswell for the unhook. Whenever i play killer, and start losing, i just facecamp the survivor, and get free downs and kills with STBFL, which is what i am talking about. I don't blame the killers for facecamping, but it sure as hell is highly unskilled. Stop pretending like it is skilled, when it clearly is not. And yes, i just admitted that i have done this aswell, but i never claimed that i was skilled for abusing this mechanic.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3283938#Comment_3283938

My point is, the killer can facecamp the survivor with STBFL, and deny unhooks from happening. Let's say two survivors come for the unhook. You hit one of them, (they run away) and the second survivor attempts to unhook, but they can't, because the recovery time from STBFL allows you to hit them aswell, without them getting the unhook.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3283939#Comment_3283939

Try getting max stacks with STBFL on Deathslinger, and facecamp the survivor. Go on, please do this experiment for yourself. As soon as you get 8 stacks of STBFL, just facecamp them, and deny anyone from unhooking them. If they somehow manage to get an unhook (Where i assume they are all now injured, and some might be on the ground, just immediately shoot the unhooked survivor with Deathslinger's weapon, and wait till the Endurance runs out, and down them.

You didn't answer the question: what is the broken mechanic?

  • @PapaQuintus said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/3283866#Comment_3283866

Yea totally skilled.. Get max stacks with STBFL on Deathslinger, and camp the hook. If the unhooked survivor get's unhooked, you hit them with your weapon, get a small cooldown, and immediately use your gun to shoot them... Totally a way to play around. It's called abusing broken mechanics in the game, and BHVR do not give a #########, because killer mains have the same mentality as truetalent lmao

Humor me: and exactly which mechanic do you believe is broken?

  • @Audiophile said:

…have no basis for believing they’re good killers.

Good/Great killers are great at map pressure and chase. They know where to go, they keep chases short and they hook and move on until they’ve won. Those 4ks are deserved. When I lose to a trapper or demo or some middle to low tier killer with a decent team because they KNEW how to play, I’m impressed. These are Type A Killers.

But i estimate 50-75% of killers mostly proxy camp so the survivors come to them and they get cheap hits and can also tunnel if they want. They basically use a flaw in the game’s design to play a bastardized version of the game that gets them fairly easy 3-4ks. These are Type B Killers.

Both types get tons of 4ks. But if you take away the ability to camp and tunnel, Type A killers still destroy and 4k. Type B killers are lost

My point here in spelling this out is twofold.

    1) I think Type B killers, because they get so much success, believe they are great at the game and so don’t bother trying to become Type A killers. I’m clarifying that they’re not. If they want to be great at the game they have to be able to win without falling back on camping and tunnelling for the majority of their play.

    2) Type B killers are also a driving force of survivor quitting. People don’t want to play the bastardized “try to save your friends being guarded at the hook” version of the game. They want to play the game as it is intended to be played. So when they see the camping and tunnelling start they leave.

And just to be clear, I’m not responding to non constructive responses. If you disagree, clearly advance your point with logic.

Wow, first killer lunges, now this? You have issues with killers in general, it would seem.

Problem is, the game. Survivors want to escape, bring the most potential to do gens. Killers want to kill to win, easiest way is to tunnel or camp.

They will never change the game. This is what it is. Humans have an uncanny ability to find the easiest path. You're seeing it for the most part.

"Humans have an uncanny ability to find the easiest path."

    Work smarter, not harder. 😉

  • Myers. I get a rush every time I hit tier 3 and that theme music kicks in. It's addictive. 😂

I disagree, I see no problem with it, personally.

The only advantage the killer gets from this is seeing what items survivors are bringing, which would very rarely affect the build they decide to bring. I don't know many killers that would swap out a meta perk for something mediocre like Lightborn if they see a lobby with flashlights, or bring Franklin's just because there are a couple of toolboxes. At the end of the day, the true outcome of the match depends on the skill of the players and their perk build; not the items they bring. As I said, would it be really worth the killer's while to waste a perk slot on an item-specific perk just for them to find out it's a brown medkit, or a yellow toolbox?

This. I'm a Myers main. My slow movement and need to stalk up my power are HUGE early game handicaps, making gen perks practically a necessity. I am NOT about to mess with my perk build just because I see four of anything in the lobby. HOWEVER, knowing what survivors are bringing will affect the way I play the match. 4 toolboxes? I have to be mindful of kicking gens instead of launching immediately into chases; or I might slug a little bit to reduce potential hook sabos. 4 flashlights? I have to remember to face a wall when picking up a survivor or be ready to look away as quickly as possible. 4 medkits? I have to be absolutely relentless in my chases, and not give survivors time to heal as best I can. This IS useful information that can affect the performance of the killer, and because of all the other advantages survivors have over killers, we absolutely should be able to see what survivors are bringing.

  • For me, solo queue is just a machine for grinding bloodpoints, no more, no less. If the team looks like it's actually trying to do something, I'll pitch in, but if they're just clowning the killer, farming hooks, etc, I just keep to myself and try to get as many bps out of the match as possible (push gens, open chests, cleanse totems, so on).

  • Same energy as grade school kids getting tilted over a game of tag. 😂

  • I don't know how anyone's getting any fun out of this game right now. If I'm playing killer, it's a sweat-fest...if I'm playing survivor, it's "oh wow...I'm against Ghostface...again..."

Yeah it is your fault. Get a better controller next time 💋.

    Lol, whatever.

    Sounds like its your fault.

My fault for making a comeback as Trapper after 5 minutes AFK with a controller malfunction? Yeah. TOTALLY my fault. 🙄

What part of "forced dc" (as in none of them were done by me) does your tiny mind not comprehend?

What platform are you on? That used to happen to me all the time on PS4. Haven't had it happen since I switched to PS5.

    Yep, on a PS4 Pro.

  • Some of these posts, I swear...why are people still playing this game if it makes them so miserable???
