In retrospect, it's very funny this company continues to shove time-limited cosmetics down our throat, when Fortnite, THE game that has popularised this disgusting monetisation scheme, had to fire a lot of employees because it's not working enough anymore.
BHVR, stop driving towards the wall. Pretty please?
-
Remember when BHVR pretended that all of this was necessary for making the store less clustered? 🤡
Yeah, that will entice new players all right. 🙄
-
Still weird how Of Flesh and Mud and Spark of Madness are base-game on every system except Steam.
-
I wish Bill got the same treatment than "regular" license holders. Last outfit he got was in 2021.
-
Nah, blight themed cosmetics is dope. And you have Paper Toilet Dwight, Werewolf Jake, and Fairy Claudette, that doesn't count?
-
FOMO? No buy, period.

Because it's an event. It's the same like having christmas themed outfits only available in december. It's a pretty basic concept that we face day by day.
In physical retail, perhaps. But not on digital stores, it's contradictory. There are no supply issues for a digital good so why should there be limited availability? It's just disguised NFT stuff.
-
- Free rewards: Meg, the Knight + killer candy weapons + survivor skeleton sweaters
- Paid: everything else including those blue shiny outfits for Yun-Jin, David and Haddie

To be fair I don't really get the FOMO Issue if it comes to cosmetics. Like we are talking about dressing a character which does not give you any benefit. And like why would someone be mad just because they couldn't get a cosmetic in a game ? Like either buy it and support the devs or don't buy it and set a standard for yourself - which is totally fine.
And having Halloween Cosmetics only on Halloween in Sale is nothing crazy and nothing new. The only problem issue I see is that they argued on twitter that they don't want to create something for P100 Players as a reward because of FOMO.
How having horror cosmetics only on Halloween for a horror-themed game justifiable? This is ridiculous, there is no defending it.

Yes, seriously. DRG does have paid cosmetic packs but these are cheap compared to DbD's $15 for 1 skin, and they transparently exist as a way for loyal players to pay more money to the devs to keep the game developing. There are still plenty, PLENTY of cosmetics to earn just by playing the game normally, and the rewards expand further with every season they do.
DbD would be a lot better about this stuff compared to other games too, if Iri Shards weren't such an agonizing grind.
Remember the time the community wanted so much to support the devs they had to release a second Supporter DLC?
That's how much DRG handles its monetisation scheme better than DBD.

It goes back to corporate responsibility and personal responsibility.
I have read several of said articles, I have a degree in Games Software Development; marketing strategies and business models were covered in one of the major modules, mostly for those who intended starting their own gaming company.
I do understand the topic at hand, and am well aware that 80% of a games profit comes from 20% of the playerbase. The 'profitable' players are known as Whales, while the rest are called minnows.
I fully understand that FOMO is a genuine condition, but I look at it the same as any form of addiction as Alcoholism or Gambling addiction. If you suffer from gambling addiction, you don't go to Las Vegas, instead of condemning Las Vegas for existing.
The reason I'm so dismissive, I've studied games that have absolutely absurd marketing models, and there are number of them that are plain disgusting. My favourite go to example is Marvel Strike Force. I'm just saying, if you are claiming BHVR is 'exploiting' FOMO by having seasonal event skins and a battlepass, you don't know what you're talking about.
Countries banning gambling and smoking from public spaces prove you wrong.
There will be a time in which Las Vegas will have to stay relevant without gambling.
And sure, there are other games that have worse FOMO. But enough with the whataboutism: we can have better things, we just have to push for them.

When I changed platforms fully at end of last year, I left all my Halloween, Christmas, etc, stuff behind. So I havent had any of that stuff all year. And you know what? My gameplay was not affected in the slightest. If you miss out on something you want this year, I promise you, you will be absolutely fine until next year rolls around.
I want to add that I do understand the vulnerability of those who experience FOMO. But I just want to try and offer a different perspective. We aren't talking about food and shelter here - things we *need*. At the end of the day these are just cosmetics in a video game. I suffer from severe anxiety and I address this vulnerability in the best way i know how, because it's my responsibility to myself to do so. I go to therapy, I meditate, or I take meds if needed. It is my responsibility to manage my conditions, not anyone elses.
They are indeed just cosmetics in a video game... so why is there a limit to their availability? It's not like BHVR is gonna run out of these to sell. That's what bothers me. Probably others too.

the fact that they abused FoMO was the last of the reasons VHS failed.
non-existent community management, excruciatingly slow content cycles, a closed beta that lasted far too long, just to name a few.
I think a better example would be Fall Guys.
To me, there are no sane person willing to financially support a dev if the only return they get is through an unpredictable rotation in-game store. It's basically gambling to me.
I dropped Fall Guys hard because of that and the recent news is proof to me that FOMO is a last-ditch tentative to stay relevant in the consumers' mindset. But everyone want to be Fortnite so much, too bad for them
Here is two other examples: Knockout City and Rumbleverse.

That is not why VHS failed.
It wasn't the sole factor, but it's definitely part of it.

I'm so tired of this FOMO nonsense. How dare BHVR allow us to earn cosmetics just for playing their game? Like they've been doing since 2018? Just like any other online, healthy, actively-updated games these days?
Enough already.
We're complaining about time-limited collections. 😒

not entirely. There’s various essays on why live-service games exploiting FoMO as their entire business model is very bad, indeed.
kinda dismissive of you, ngl.
Video Horror Society is the best example of that. Look at where it got to be with model based almost entirely on FOMO.
Spoiler: It didn't made it out of Early Access.

it's free tho. the direct risk of abusing FOMO strategies is not there, since there's no pressure to spend real money.
Free bad is still bad. Let's stop with that "it's free" excuse.
FOMO is about missing out. You can do that without involving real currencies. For example, cosmetics locked behind daily login rewards counts as FOMO. Yet nobody who get them paid, and nobody that didn't get them paid.
-
Great. More potential FOMO. Everybody loves that.
😑
-
Basically... from any current licenses that are already in the game but didn't get shipped with a map: Knowby Cabin from Evil Dead, Sawyer Residence from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the cancelled Hellraiser and Sadako Rising maps...
-
If the existence of time-limited collections results in giving paranoïa to consumers, it was a bad idea.

You should probably ask Netflix instead of BHVR.
-
Give us an add-on that make zombies completely silent, it will be fun.
-
If I'm asked to recapitulate in one word what is wrong with the Singularity, it would be overwhelming.
-
Video games are too good, what can you do
-
Ask Capcom.
-
-
If it brings more FOMO collections to the game, I ain't excited for it.
-
Linked sets might be the sole reason why we were able to get Resident Evil, Alien and Hellraiser DLCs. To me, it's a necessary evil.
But some sets should absolutely be reworked into 2-pieces sets.
-
I am not supporting this game anymore until they reverse course on this major issue. 👎️
-
Yes. The true value of the rift should be getting all of these cosmetics for ten bucks. Similar to a discount available for three months, far better than making content that will never come back.
-
Yep, exclusive is the term used.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6tQ8dfeD5A -
Multiples solutions for P100 rewards:
- Character cosmetics: Red recolors of the legacy prestige outfit. Make it red like the P100 badge.
- Bloody portraits: Rather than letting old players be the only ones to have the bloody portraits on the character menus, make it so reaching P100 unlocks it for said character. Can also be used as incentive for old players since Ada, Rebecca, Wesker and any character after that don't have bloody portraits.
- Player Cards: something for... that system... (The Mid-Chapter update release in less than 2 weeks and we still don't know anything about it, how come???)
- Charms: I don't know... Perhaps using the adept icons but red? 🤷♂️
Oh and yeah, BHVR deserves to be called out on FOMO practices. Quite the hypocrisy here.
Unvault all time-limited and exclusive collections, period.
-
"We don't want people to feel like missing out" but as long as the game feature exclusive battle pass rewards, no charm store, time-limited collections, exclusive event rewards... that's a lie and they should be called out anytime the subject is being brought up.
-
The true value of the Prime rewards should have been the fact that you got those for "free".
Exclusivity always alienate people.

I think that you're just diving too deeply in something that is really not that serious. It's the problem of people obsessed with cosmetics and having everything, it's on them to learn to control their compulsive consumist behavior.
I don't plan to own every cosmetic. It just pisses me off DbD is going that road when they were doing just fine for 5 years.
-
What if they all bamboozle us, and they add a fishing minigame 🤔

You can't blame a company for doing a marketing strategy that works and gives the more income. If you don't like it, just don't take part init. Don't agree? Don't buy. It's that easy. It's what I do when I disagree or dislike something.
I can absolutely blame a company for alienating their consumer base.
I already don't buy it. Doesn't mean I cannot also complain on official forums too.
-
I will let you guess how many of those quote retweets point the hypocrisy of this answer with the existing time-limited collections.
Answer: It's not that low!
-
Right now, it doesn't seems so... But as we saw once, it can be changed at any time.

Every game out there does it. It’s called marketing and FOMO strategy.
That doesn't make it okay.
-
There are so good gems lately but I ain't spending a cent on any of those as long as DBD still does that time-limited collections BS.
-
They should absolutely do so, it's madness they still haven't.
-
I think tunning down Hope to 5% so it serves as a counter-measure NOED would be sweet.
-
The only acceptable "Twitch exclusive" should have been the Twitch shirts. But instead we got multiple collections fragmented behind different type of FOMO, it's not appreciable at all.
-
You are Undetectable as long as the icon status is still visible on the right side of your screen, no matter if you're in a chase or not.

The thrill of it.

I think it's time for a license survivor to get one.

Well, it looks like the dream is dead folks. The wording is weird but it seems like BHVR is only interested in bringing back outfits that are Very Rare or above. Once again the wording is unclear, but this seems to suggest that the single piece rift and non Very Rare outfits will not be returning again.
Such a bad move... 🤮
