  • it was awful lol

    especially for solo survivor

it's probably their worst event to date and a good indication that a secondary objective is not a good idea

if anything, just increase how long gens take to repair

  • it was if you wanted to participate in the event

and if it had been forced that would have made it much worse

  • second objectives don't really work, the halloween event proved that

  • good billy players will curve you at loops

  • base billy is the most balanced thing in the game

  • @Tsulan said:

@all the people that downvoted my hatch removal proposal. Is there a similar mechanic for killers that I didn't knew? One that rewards utterly bad killers with 7000bp?

But survivors deserve that escape, right? Like when one of the last 2 survivors doesn't do anything but search for the hatch and then camp it.

that's the downside of hatch, yes, someone getting it when all they did all game was hide

on the other hand, if one survivor is good and the other 3 are bad, the fact that the good survivor has a chance of escaping once the other 3 die is nice

  • all swf promotes is playing with your friends

some people get their rocks off by running broken maps and syringes

let them fly their egos around like a kite for a game and go next

most groups just screw around in my experience

  • spirit's still makes me laugh

  • i don't "destroy" good killers

abandon the mindset that red ranks are all about bullying the poor killers

plenty of killers who aren't good at all reach red ranks by using omegablink nurse or instasaw or something like that

killers who are good beat me all the time and they're my favourites to go against. i like feeling like i've outmaneuvered a good killer player, especially one who knows me. even if i die at 4 gens because i play like an idiot i'll have had fun

solo survivor is fun because it's total chaos and i never know what team i'm going to end up with

survive with friends is fun because we play like boosted idiots and farm each other

  • how did you get punished? you destroyed them, 3 people died at 5 gens and one was lucky to find the hatch and escape

who cares if the last person typed something stupid

if the game is that slanted that i can easily kill everyone at 5 gens then i don't care if someone gets the hatch, it's a win either way

  • i never dodge lobbies

i dc on haddonfield keys though

  • spirit should not have fatigue, that would gut her

  • to expand on that, the in-game ping indicator is inaccurate and shows pings as being higher than they are, MLGA allows you to see the more accurate pings of other players

@miaasma That's not what a mindgame is. If you have enough information to deduce the correct action for sure then it's a reaction. A mindgame has only 3 requirements:

A: Both players having unreliable information on each others next move

B: The other player having the ability to counter any given action you could reasonably take in the current situation

C: The other player not being able to counter all of your possible actions at the same time

When the spirit phases requirement A is always fulfilled. The spirit's body viably stops moving, this is unreliable information. And the survivors body disappears leaving you only with their last known location, also unreliable information. Scratchmarks are generally reliable but cleaver jukes can keep them from being totally reliable.

While B is not always fulfilled (for example if you are injured in the open) it often is for example if the Survivor is at a dropped pallet.

The reason why spirit is so good is because requirement C is nearly always fulfilled.

However ANY time all 3 requirements are met the action being taken is a mind game (or at least close enough to one mechanically)

More specifically it's a kind of mindgame refered to as WIFOM or Wine In Front Of Me, referencing the princess bride scene.

Here is the scene itself just for fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9TRMQwMNnY. Funnily enough it isn't an actual example.

a more detailed explaination of WIFOM: https://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=WIFOM

That explaination is geared towards mafia. But a lot of the same ideas still apply here.

The TLDR is that: These kinds of predictions always SEEM random, and if they were against a computer then they very much could be. However in reality it comes down to psychology and patterns. You start by predicting a spirit based on what most spirits have done, and then switch to predicting based on what that specific spirit actually has done as you go through chases.

i think you're misunderstanding. the scenario at a high wall pallet loop is not a reaction because if a killer plays it correctly a survivor actually cannot react in time to a tell, like seeing the killer around a corner or seeing the red stain. the survivor has to actually make a prediction based on how the killer plays. that's why those high wall loops (and LT walls for that matter) are some of the most skill based loops in the game, because they come down to outplaying the other player and aren't inherently busted structures. at the same time they aren't complete guessing games because you know where the danger zone at those loops is and can ready yourself for the killer to mindgame you

when you describe a reaction, you're actually kind of making my argument for me because that is what a spirit is doing during any given interaction with a survivor. little prediction is required because of how much information she already gets, compared to the none the survivor gets if they're in her terror radius

the information a spirit gets while phasing is not unreliable provided sounds are not broken. if the spirit misreads where the survivor is that's not a result of the information being shoddy, it's a result of the spirit misreading the situation and messing up; don't get me wrong, sometimes that's easy to do with nearby generators and other stuff making noise or botched scratch marks on certain maps, but the information is there

the survivor does not have any real opportunity to counter what a spirit is doing because they have nothing to base a response off of. you say a mindgame isn't a reaction but it has to be in part because otherwise it just becomes a guessing game. the best way to describe an interaction with a spirit is a guessing game, especially at a dropped pallet when you're in her terror radius. on the survivor's end, there is no indication of what she's doing, so you have to guess at when she's using her power, and then guess where she's going while in phase (as well as how fast she goes due to addons, etc.), all the while having 0 tells to go off of. and frankly i'd be okay with this if i had any idea of when she was using her power but again, there are zero cues for what that happens so you're forced to just guess

i do know what WIFOM is (i've played a lot of mafia) and while it's not a bad description of what's happening it's also not very applicable to this scenario because the person using it is also attempting to predict whether or not the other person is doing the same thing and the playing field is more or less even because both players have the same (little to none) information to work off of

spirit has too much information to work with while phasing for it to be considered a true WIFOM example, and this makes the scenario hugely unfair for the other person who is forced to make that guess. for how risky the scenario is for the survivor, the spirit isn't risking much at all because of her mid-phase cues, and this is what separates spirit interactions with the aforementioned high wall loops; killers aren't given cues for what survivors are doing at these loops and have to base their actions around how the survivor plays, just as the survivor has to do to the killer. this is closer to WIFOM than a spirit interaction. when i moonwalk a high wall tile as the wraith i'm not doing it as a response to anything, i'm doing it because i know the survivor can't see me or my red stain, but when i'm playing spirit at a dropped pallet i'm standing still to see what the survivor does, phasing in response, and then using mid-phase cues to locate them more accurately. it's not a mindgame

  • @MegMain98 i think people overblow how "weak" the weaker killers are. you cannot currently run a competent killer for 5 gens, regardless of the killer, on any map, period. sure, you can infinite a killer through the asylum, but no good killer is going to just chase you through that horrible place and waste all that time. bad map design hurts the weakest killers, so the best way to deal with such map-related issues is to just sidestep them until they get addressed. a good killer player on the weakest killer will choose their chases more carefully and not chase through strong setups and structures unless they can afford to by already being in the lead

in my opinion "if X killer is good, you're screwed regardless of individual skill" isn't a healthy attitude towards balance. i agree that spirit should have the upper hand in survivor-killer interactions, which is why i'm not on board with nerfing her. i'm just not a fan of the immense disparity in information that both sides have to work with, and i wish survivors had more input during chases with her

i consider (addonless) billy to be the most balanced killer in the game; in the hands of a bad player he'll be looped into oblivion but in the hands of a good player he'll curve people around loops and predict window vaults and punish mistakes. and after all, all survivors make mistakes. i can run a bad or even mediocre billy for a very long time but an exceptionally good billy player (think zubatlel, quixoticgreen, battleguy or ryanpez. ScottJund himself plays a great billy and he's here in this thread) will have me on a hook very quickly if i don't have a very strong setup to work with because they're excellent at punishing missteps and get pallets thrown very quickly (or get downs very quickly)

i totally agree that killers should have the upper hand in chases; survivors are meant to go down eventually, but that requires that the killer actually outplay them, and when i get downed by a spirit i don't feel like i've been outplayed at all. i just feel like i lost the dice roll

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/528630#Comment_528630

@miaasma her web gets her downs. If your trapping is good, you don't need to place any.

Also just trapping loops is just ONE style as Hag. I trap routes, and chase just as well. She has various different playstyles. Not all Hags care about loops. A route Hag can easily apply healing pressure with Thanatophobia since people always run into your traps constantly.

A chokepoint Hag can easily apply map pressure.

But yeah, she's strong in chases. Same as Nurse in speed.

    @MegMain98

my experience both playing hag and playing against competent hags is that they use a mix of placing traps as they run around and place traps at loops in order to zone people into those traps. a good hag can't really be looped but hag is slow and if you know not to stay in any one place for long she can be reliably played against

my issue with spirit is that whether or not you fall for her "mindgames" isn't really up to you, it's just up to how good the spirit player is

when i think mindgame, i think of a high wall pallet loop where the survivor can't directly see the killer and needs to predict based on tells (red stain, moonwalking) where the killer is going to be. if they predict correctly they get a loop out of it, if they predict incorrectly they run into the killer and get hit. what makes this a mindgame is that both players have to work to outplay each other

when a survivor is being chased by a spirit at a loop, she has plenty of tells to just react to; she can stand still and observe the survivor until they either run towards her (at which point she just moves and hits them) or away from the loop (at which point she uses her power and uses audio-visual cues to locate them). on the survivor's side, you have to effectively guess at what she's doing because you can't know whether she's using her power. that for me is where it stops being a mindgame and just becomes a guessing game. it becomes even worse when you're injured and the spirit just echolocates you while you try to move unpredictably

i think that's where we differentiate; you kind of are helpless against a good spirit, similarly to how you're helpless against a good nurse. i play on PC so nurses are everywhere and with the addons they have they don't need to be any good to be a waste of time to play against. spirit isn't as bad but in a sense is more frustrating because nurse at least can be mindgamed slightly by breaking line of sight and making her over-blink. the problems people have with nurse apply to spirit, just to a lesser degree because she is overall nowhere near as strong as nurse (no one is)

  • @Poweas

well her snowballing is directly related to her map control imo

she applies more hook pressure than any other killer. even if you don't trap hooks (i don't) people will waste time crouching to get unhooks

she's good in chases but trapping loops doesn't necessarily get you downs, it just potentially forces survivors into compromising positions if done correctly. people who know to run away when you trap a loop will keep you running for a while unless you manage to zone them into an area you already have traps in

i think she overshadows billy against good players

  • i really hope it's not similar to either of those

  • @MegMain98 said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/528595#Comment_528595

@ScottJund You always have a warning when Spirit is coming toward you, similar to Huntress. The loud vacuum sound gives a survivor a chance of escaping the area. Unless she has Prayer Beads, which we all know are stupid add-ons.

Without perks, Spirit doesn’t have much of a counter rather then hope she can’t hear that well and she messes up her phase walk. It’s pretty much a prediction. It’s similar to Nurse, without perks you aren’t countering a Nurse. I’d argue that you can’t counter a Hag without a flashlight. You can’t counter those three killers without perks simply because you can’t waste their time by pallet looping.

Just because she is strong doesn’t mean she needs any changes though.

hag has counterplay, let her trap the loop while you run to the next tile. a good hag is extremely strong but she has at least a modicum of counterplay no matter how much of a slog she is to play against. hag's main strength is her map control and ability to apply pressure, while spirit excels in chases and suffers with regards to map control

it seems you agree that spirit doesn't have much counterplay outside of perks. what made you take such issue with my posts further back?

  • i think they're hesitant to release something too powerful after the legion calamity

of course, the issue with that is that legion was never just so good that he couldn't be beaten, it's that legion broke the mechanics of the game. so long as they steer clear of that, they could release a totally batshit OP killer into the PTB and then tweak it to make it more serviceable before going live

on the topic of MoM though it is crazy to me that somebody thought about the perk and thought it fit well into the game. it's another on a long list of examples that point towards BHVR's desperate need to consult veteran players before going through with these sorts of changes. MoM wouldn't have made it past the drawing board if they'd done that

  • i don't think anyone's denying that iron will is a good perk, they're (myself included) taking issue with the premise that a perk is needed to counter a killer. i personally find iron will boring to run and it doesn't suit my playstyle, and i should be able to outplay a killer without it

it's not a problem, i didn't come here posting negatively about a fan-favourite killer expecting anything but downvotes and vitriol lol

i mean i've said some extreme stuff but the bottom line for me is that survivors have no real options against a spirit mid-chase if they aren't running specific perks and that's a problem. that's really all i came here to communicate. i don't think a nerf is the answer like the OP does, i just have mixed feelings about the killer's design

@miaasma Learn that not every game is going to be handed to you. Learn how to bait that ######### early.

Objectively weaker, by definition, are ALREADY at a disadvantage.

@gantes feel free to question things. But theres no need for the "woe is me I had to face MoM" attitude. No need for bashing people or getting heated because you dont like how a perk works or the fact that you CAN play the game regardless of it affecting the outcome.

Sorry if I dont have to have a 4k handed to me every game to enjoy it.

It's okay, I get it, a lot of you were raised with participation trophies. So I'll leave you to your echo chamber as your peers usually do .

Good luck on your irl struggle you want to blame on everything expect your lack of will to try.

    <3

thanks for the continued meaningless nonsense that points out nothing specific about how to counter a perk that has no explicit counter other than to simply play an instadown killer (or pig). learn how to "bait" a perk that activates on its own. we don't deserve your wisdom

Cant look at every challenge as an impossible task to quit or use as a reason to change things.

this is just a bunch of useless platitudes

what is there to "learn" about a perk that can only be countered by certain killers? regular m1 killers have to just power through it and it can easily lose them games and there's nothing they can do about it

i've dealt with those teams too (and won), that doesn't mean anything when the perk by definition puts objectively weaker killers at a disadvantage

@ScottJund the combo hard counters Nurse also. Since she looks at you when she blinks at you, so prediction blinks are impossible against a good survivor since they make no noise, and when you try to prediction blink, they can turn around once the spine chill lights up. It's actually why I run it, hard countering the two best killers is worth it. Also, Iron will is good in general since I don't run Self care.

You should try it, if you face Nurse and Spirit a lot.

iron will is a great perk, it's just boring and doesn't suit my playstyle. i also just reject the idea that i should need to run a perk in order to have a chance against a good player on a specific killer. i think you understand this despite many being unable to

people just become very defensive when you point out a flaw in the design of a killer they like. try telling someone who only plays 3 blink nurse the sort of wheelchair they're placing themselves in and they exhibit the same sort of behaviour. not that i'm suggesting spirit's base kit is anywhere near as stupid as 3 blink nurse (or nurse's base kit for that matter), but the parallels are there

  • when detective_jonathan vouches for you you know you've made it

  • i won't have an opportunity to show you any skill if you're playing spirit because my individual skill means nothing against that killer. that's been the point the whole time

why would i tag you/care if you see my response

  • literally speaking to a brick wall

have fun with your braindead killer

@miaasma Not my fault your mindset is still survivor sided. Trust me...I was the same way, hence the name “MegMain”. Bitching and moaning that a killer doesn’t have counterplay when they clearly do only makes you sound more whiny. Sometimes a killer is just better than you are, it’s that simple. You’re trying to butcher a killer that has SLIGHT power in a chase. In no way is Spirit uncounterable.

I was also not being serious about the Blendette comment. I’m a very sarcastic person IRL so I say things like that all the time.

I was basically telling you to run Iron Will and Spine Chill if you have an issue. If you get triggered over something small like that then you’re even MORE whiny than I thought you were when I first commented to you.

you really don't have any intention of discussing this topic in good faith if you continue to cling to the "run this perk to counter spirit" point despite multiple people pointing out why it's an inadequate response to requests for examples of counterplay

the rest of your post is just fluff. calling people whiny, survivor sided and telling them they want to "butcher" a killer (reminds me of pre-patch legion mains complaining about the imminent rework) just by pointing out that it has no counterplay. wanting to level the playing field is not tantamount to "butchering" a killer. this post just communicates to me that you have no real response and are just lashing out at the prospect of your favourite killer being a wheelchair

I don’t have an issue playing as or against a Spirit. I survive and die as much as any other killer. Every killer has counterplay and Spirit is no exception.

i'm sorry, we're now making in-depth judgments based on profile pictures? are we serious? lmao

nice to know you resort to baseless mudslinging when someone argues your favourite killer has no counterplay. sorry if that makes you feel inadequate

Not really, no. If they were facing it that much, they'd take a perk to help them counter it. When I suggested it, however, the response was basically "Why would I take that perk to counter this one thing?". To me, that says they're not facing it nearly as often as they claim.

it doesn't matter how often you encounter something that has zero counterplay, it still has zero counterplay

no matter how many times i say this your brain doesn't absorb it

    very unfortunate

also anyone claiming they don't encounter omegablink nurse often is not playing in red ranks or even high purple ranks

@miaasma There is no reason Spirit should have a nerf besides the fact that YOU don’t like playing against her.

I personally HATE Legion and wish that they were never added to the game but I’m not gonna make threads saying how much I despise Legion.

Spirit has counterplays, a good one will more than likely win though. Spirit and Nurse are the only two killers that is near impossible to beat when the player is really good.

Spirit is also one of the few viable killers against good survivors. We need viable killers, don’t butcher my bb Spirit.

where did i call for spirit to be nerfed, i didn't make this thread

this also has nothing to do with preference

just because you personally enjoy playing spirit doesn't mean she's well designed or has any counterplay whatsoever lol

  • @FrenziedRoach said:

I get the distinct impression that certain people in this thread just don't know how to make a read on a player at even a fundamental level which is why they find the Spirit difficult to play against.

Human beings are creatures of habit, and a great majority of us have these habits so ingrained that they are noticable to those who are paying attention. That's what makes certain people who play spirit and Nurse so damn good - they can make those reads. And the people who are best at countering them are those with the same ability.

You can't really explain this to people who don't have the ability to notice the patterns - they just aren't wired that way (and we shouldn't be deriding them for lacking this ability). We can only take solice in that the devs have no plans to touch this fine killer any time soon.

you aren't "making" her mess up because she still has methods of tracking you if you move unpredictably. if she does well, she gets you. it doesn't matter how well you do, that's the problem

it's crazy to me how you can type things out like "you can increase the chance she makes a mistake by being unpredictable" and not realize the implication that all it boils down to is whether or not the spirit is good. what you're effectively saying is that if she is, and she doesn't mess up, you're dead. ergo, survivors have no real input in a killer-survivor interaction, all that matters is how good at the game the killer is. ergo, bad killer design

you can play as unpredictably as you want but in the end if she uses her tracking tools properly she doesn't need to predict anything, just react. the ball is always in her court. survivors react to nothing, spirit reacts to everything

keep typing the same thing over and over again if it makes you feel better about how this killer has no counterplay. plenty of people who play lots of spirit don't have an issue admitting that survivors can't do much of anything against a good spirit, so i'm not sure why you're having so much trouble with this. i'm going with the hopeless theory

No lose the game as in 3e/4e/depip. A good survivor with Iron Will that knows what to do against Spirit will waste a lot of your time, and/or be the gen jockey you can't stop while you are busy with other survivors.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/527832#Comment_527832

Your points have been debunked though. Nothing you've said about how she plays is an indication she is overpowered and needs a nerf. More that you simply fail to counter play her properly. It can be done, I do it all the time and I've had it done to me (and I'm a pretty good Spirit). It's all about prediction skills and your ability to be unpredictable yourself.

i never said spirit was overpowered, i said she had no counterplay

spirit doesn't really have to predict anything lol

pretty convinced you aren't reading stuff at this point, and if you think "hoping she messes up" is any actual counterplay or in any way good killer design then you're hopeless

  • @thesuicidefox said:

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/527791#Comment_527791

If you play Spirit then you honestly shouldn't have that much trouble beating her. Yes, she could fake the phase walk, see what you do, then phase walk, but now you have a head start. If you move to a spot that breaks LOS and act unpredictably, you can avoid getting hit. I've done it. It's not hard.

"Do random stuff and hope she messes up" is exactly what you need to do. If you act unpredictably she won't be able to hit you out of phase walk. When that happens you can loop her like any other killer for a short time.

Also it's not always a guessing game, it's a PREDICTION game. You have to be able to read what she is doing, and you do that by understanding how to play her. If you are running directly at a window, the obvious choice is that you will vault it. She is predicting you will do that, so you need to NOT do that. Then the next time, slow vault the window. She will think you didn't vault. It's called conditioning.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/527802#Comment_527802

Because Spirit main's understand how she plays and therefore understand how to counter play her. I find it very easy to play against most Spirit players, because most Spirit players aren't very good honestly. I know how to counter play her. It's why I tell Spirit mains you want Stridor because it's the only way to beat Iron Will. The common counter argument is "well I have no problem tracking survivors in phase walk", yea because most survivors are bad at playing against Spirit. But get 1 survivor that knows what to do, give them Iron Will, and you could easily lose a game because of that one player. I've had players juke the crap out of me during my phase walk because they were very unpredictable. That's what you need to do to beat her. The less information you give her to find you, the more likely you will escape. Do I still die to Spirit? Yes, but it's usually because I made a mistake, not because she was so powerful I couldn't beat her.

really don't have the patience to respond to the same things over and over again so just read back

  • a spirit main saying "spirit is the most balanced killer in the game" and not realizing their own bias even when it's spelled out for them is just hysterical

especially when it's paired with calling everyone who disagrees with them "survivor mains"

  • prayer beads should be removed or reworked entirely lol

  • i feel like you didn't read anything i typed in this thread if you think i haven't played spirit or don't know to take windows against her

the standing still thing you're mentioning shows you're out of touch. she can stand still until you start to walk away, THEN phase at you. that's what i mean when i say a spirit can just watch what you do and react accordingly

the rest of your advice is just "do random stuff and hope she screws up" unabridged. that's exactly what i do and it works a lot. doesn't mean it isn't horrible that the only "counterplay" to a killer is hoping they messed up

it's a guessing game killer and it's bad design, and assuming i'm some rank 20 who has never played spirit and doesn't know what i'm talking about is your call
