The Rank doesn’t equal skill meme is just so stupid. If you really think you’re going to consistently 4K Rank 1 survivors with no perks Wraith because they’re potatoes, you’re delusional. It’s a stupid, hyperbolic example. Yeah, some Rank 1 players potato every once in a while. Most, though, are actually the best players in the game. I don’t know why that’s so hard for everyone to admit.
That said, you’re not wrong about Rank 1 stats being all that matter. When was this ever even implied? I would imagine the devs look at performance across the entire player base when they’re considering balance changes.

As we all know Spirit is getting nerfed, because devs preferred to listen to survivors who don't even know how to counter her or refuse to do so by DCing. There is nothing we can do to change their mind, but they should consider some important changes before gutting her. I won't suggest how to fix them. I just mention them.
1) First of all, they must do something about gen times. At red ranks, if you don't have ruin, it is almost impossible to win the game unless the survivors are potatoes (which is something rare). A good SWF team will destroy you even with ruin.
2) A lot of maps need a rework. They are too big and you can't apply the proper pressure unless they three gen themselves
3) SWF is another problem. They have a huge advantage over any other killer who is not spirit or pre nerf nurse. Billy, ghostface and Freddy can also be viable, but you are forced to camp and slug to have a chance to win.
4) Toolboxes are very strong in a genrushing team, so they need a nerf, too
In conclusion, spirit is the only counter to those issues and MUST NOT get nerfed before addressing them
TL;DR
Gen times, maps, swf teams and toolboxes need to be fixed first, before nerfing spirit
The 4 “problems” you brought up are a complete non sequitur to the complaints about Spirit. Also, if you’re having problems applying pressure because maps are too big and gens go too fast AS A SPIRIT MAIN, maybe it’s time to take some of your own advice and “learn the counters”.
-
Go ahead and quote the part where I said Spirit needed to be nerfed.

The irony in this post is so real. I don’t mean to attack @TheHoodiedOne because I think you’re very reasonable most of the time, but ‘I don’t want to play against survivors who know what they’re doing’ is a tough idea to get behind.

I’ve noticed that in about 50 percent of games I play against Ghost Face, looking at him does not reveal him like it should. This is a game-changing break, as revealing him is the main method of not getting exposed. Anyone else have this issue?
You need to have him right in the center of your screen to reveal. Like, you have to actually aim the camera as he's moving so he stays centered.

I am pretty sure that you can use Styptic Agent just when you are injured, so exposed perks or abilities can still counter it if you are healthy. But it's buffed against Plague or if you use No Mither together with it.
That's correct; you have to be injured to use a medit and it's addons.

The problem with the Styptic, is that I'm a Plunderer who runs Ace in the Hole.
Whenever I pull a Medkit from a chest with Styptic, I just pull my hair out in frustration because it can't even friking' heal you.
Maybe run Pharmacy with those two so you get a guaranteed green medkit?

you can tell if shes using her power by: Her glass shards glowing, her hair straightening, and the sound of her footsteps if shes close enough and at loops and with a good headset i hear them pretty often. people cant use this because they are too lazy to try and use them so they want her nerfed. Is she still strong even when you know these things? yes but that's how every killer should be.
You can’t reliably tell if she’s using her power, or else the ‘mind game’ where she just stands still wouldn’t work. There is no directional audio queue, footsteps or other, while she is phasing.
The issue isn’t that she’s strong. There are other strong killers that aren’t even close to being as frustrating to play against. The issue is that the only survivor counter play is a 100% guess.

Fatigue might be interesting, but what I’m hoping for is something you can react to while she’s using her power.

There are a honestly a few counterplays to her power.
1. Fixated. Walking at faster movement to not leave scratch marks she can follow is a big advantage. If you are injured, well.
2. Iron Will. Solid perk for countering her as most spirits can find you when injured about 10x faster due to the injured noises. Run Iron Will and they lose that power.
3. Spine Chill. I run the perk all the time anymore due to its versatility. It picks up all killers and when the spirit is phasing, your Spine Chill will go off when she is looking at you.
4. Good Headphones. Even if running prayer beads, her phasing causes stuff in the environment around you to move and make noise, just pay attention and what your butt for when she is coming.
5. Remembering she has a cooldown. I've seen so many people mess up mind games because of her standing still IMMEDIATELY AFTER PHASING THERE. She can't phase again yet, just run. Remember after she phases it takes her a bit to regain that ability so use it to your advantage to know when the mindgame may be a fake out.
These are the ones off the top of my head. I've had no issues playing against Spirit as a survivor. And never once thought she was too powerful when playing killer. There are counters to her power, they are just more difficult to learn and that is a fair trade considering she is more difficult to play as a killer.
I agree with all of this except for the idea that she is difficult to play.

That's just ignorant then and lacks critical thinking.
"Assuming that you're not actively playing because your profile indicates you're not actively playing is ignorant? Oh boy..."
Two weeks is not a determinant of "active playing".
"'I don't have rank 1 killer yet this reset. The screenshot was a response to being told I don't play rank 1 survivor."
I never said you didn't play rank 1 survivor. What I said was that you don't play BOTH sides at rank 1. So based on your logic above should I assume you aren't actively playing killer as well and that you are still stuck in 2018? That would sound stupid wouldn't it.
"You didn't provide a screenshot of either yet."
I have a stream that can be watched.

I do play both sides at rank 1 every month. I don't have killer there YET since 10/13. I didn't say you weren't actively playing based on your rank. I said you weren't actively playing because of the recent hours on your Steam profile. Is this a strawman or lack of comprehension?

"This is actual proof that you don't play survivor at rank 1. Do you really think we're not doing these things already?"
The fact you don't think these work tells me you don't. I've linked my hours, achieves and my live stream for my legitimacy. I've played both sides at rank 1 for years on every reset.
"It's very telling that you think high rank survivors haven't been trying all of these things. You can't actually hear her footsteps well enough to outplay her. The other 4 suggestions are all countered by her collision while phasing."
Most survivors don't learn how to play against her and don't do these things. Instead they come to the forums like you have. Those other 4 things are only countered by phase collision if you're bad and don't know how to do it properly.
"I guess we are at an impasse if you're of the mind that survivors are the current power role. The game feels relatively balanced in most situations right now. The only thing that would change my mind is seeing survival rates from BHVR. Seems like you're stuck in 2017-2018."
If you think the game is relatively balanced right now then you don't play both sides at rank 1 at all. I think you're stuck at low ranks in 2019 and haven't realized the games balance yet.
No information given.5.3 hours in the last two weeks is a big LOL for me. It's great that you have 4k hours; I can respect that you have a lot of experience to comment from. It entirely does offer substance, you just refuse to believe it. I pointed out that your entire base premise is not correct. I did read it, I just think you are wrong.
"This 'survivors are just whiny' rhetoric is a major reason why there is such a divide in the community."
Because that is actually what is happening. The only people agreeing with you are people who don't actually play both sides at rank 1 to understand the games balance. What IS dividing the community are people pushing for game changes that don't have a full grasp of the game.
"The original post acknowledges that there are ways to give yourself a better chance against her."
"The reason she is disliked is because THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE COUNTERPLAY TO HER POWER."
Yes, you listed some perks yet you also completely contradicted yourself in your same post.
"If Spirit is not pallet loopable, what are the 'lots of counters' survivors can use against her?"
This had already been answered on this post if you simply scroll up as well as ad nauseam in these forums.
You can hear her footsteps quite easily.
You juke your scratch marks by doubling back a different direction.
Lots more walking and less running allows her to be juked quite easily.
If she isn't hearing you she is entirely trying to predict your movement. Be unpredictable.
Fast vault a window and then slow vault back over. Works A LOT.
This is all not taking into account stealth since you already mentioned that and the many perks that counter her as well. Most of those perks are also still very good against other killers. You mention in your original post whether survivors can "afford" to run them. Really? Survivors could literally run zero perks right now and they are still the power role. Yes, they can afford to run any off meta thing they like. I'd even argue Iron Will is hard meta and Spine Chill low key.
I really don't think you're actually reading or understanding the posts. I'll do the quotes like you did for context.

Against bad survivors. Old nurse was the only one that fit this.
"The reason she is disliked is because THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE COUNTERPLAY TO HER POWER."
No, the reason she is disliked is because most survivors refuse to learn how to counter her and instead come here to forums complaining she has no counter. She has lots of counters. Survivors dislike any killer that isn't pallet loopable in the bully simulator.

Let's take your one point and try to expand on it. If Spirit is not pallet loopable, what are the 'lots of counters' survivors can use against her? There have already been comments about how stealth is an option, but it's currently a weak play style. What else do you have for us?

Spirit does have counterplay. I issue is her counter (playing immerse)isn’t very effective. I think they should leave Spirit alone a buff perks like Calm Spirit, Lightweight, and Premonition. I run Iron Will + Urban Evasion most of the time and even that can be better than most people think against Spirit.
I can agree. That's where my Spine Chill + Fixated idea came from; just avoid getting into a chase with her as much as possible.

Spirit honestly doesn't need a nerf... if anything they could just add an audio clue to her whereabouts while in her phase-walk and/or make grass and corn shift when she walks through them.
people who have trouble with her really just need to learn how to mindgame better... and I say that knowing that a good spirit will stomp me quite often.
it's not a coin-toss stacked in her favor, she still has to use information provided to make an educated guess... I will admit that survivors could use a little more information to help even the odds a bit though.
I think re-adding the directional audio when she’s phasing would be a good place to start.

This might be bias on my part, but even though I think Spirit does need some nerfs, it is possible to outplay her. In my experience playing Survivor at least. And no, it's not really about a guessing game. It's more on what you read what the player who plays the Spirit does.
So if you make the wrong read you take a hit, right? Please tell me how it makes any difference when I substitute the word ‘guess’ for the word ‘read’.

Survivors are too used to being in total control at the majority of loops. Between 3rd person camera, most Killer's hight, and the red stain being seen through walls, Survivors are used to a plethora of information that keeps them from making mistakes. Spirit excels at loops and that's why Survivors hate her.
A lot of the OP loops have been reworked this past year. I would say there’s a pretty fair balance of survivor and killer friendly loops right now.
-
@gantes said:
The only thing that holds Spirit back from being impossible to handle is her weakness to big maps. She can't afford to use her power fully for map pressure and still perform as well as she does in chases, at least not without add-ons dedicated to that.
However, her problem isn't her power level. It's the same problem that plagued old Legion, but to a lesser degree. The main thing that makes DBD fun is the chases, and the skill expression involved in both sides. Aside from overbearing, overly safe loops, that's the best thing about this game. Chases involving the Spirit require a good headphone and that's it. The only way you're pulling that to your favor is if she misplays or you brought 3 perks to handle her specifically, and once she knows you have them your advantage is almost gone.
Chases should ultimately be in the killers' favor, of course, but not to the extent that Spirit controls them. She doesn't even have to be nerfed. Just move some of her power away from chases and into map pressure and she'd be A LOT better to face.
Great reply with a great understanding of what makes this game fun.

Like many other issues in this vein, the issue doesn't stem from the power of the killer, but from the strategy of the survivor.
YOU don't think there's no counterplay, but that's just because you don't have a good strategy against her.
Spirit is my 2nd main and at high ranks I'm often outplayed by good survivors. They have strategies that work against the spirit that you simply haven't thought of or refuse to utilize.
If you have a hard time winning a mindgame at a loop, maybe you should abandon the loop in a way that forces the spirit to phase or run.
Utilize perks that make avoiding her easier as well as perks that make it easier to throw her in the wrong direction because you're invisible when she phases.
There are things you can do. Perhaps you're not skilled enough yet, but with practice you can beat a spirit.
If you're worried about losing perks just to take care of one issue, welcome to the killer reality.
keys - franklins
rush - ruin
pallet loops - specific killers - spirit fury - enduring
jungle gyms - bamboozle
those are the ones that come to me first.
If survivors develop skill they won't need killers to be nerfed to stand a chance.
If killers continue to be nerfed, killer players will get better and adapt while your skill level remains stagnant and you beg for more nerfs later.
Just wait until the worse killers are balanced towards the middle. You'll find yourself at a skill based disadvantage regardless of the killer you face.
Did you miss the paragraph where I acknowledged there are legitimate ways to give yourself a chance against her? One of them being something I‘ve never seen anyone mention.
It really seems like you didn’t read the post carefully and are going straight into killer defense mode. You could have just written git gud survivor trash; that’s how your post reads.

https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/100593/the-legitimate-case-against-spirit
She doesn't have built in counters your very right, she cant be countered by one thing, juke or mindgame. You have to play each spirit like their a completely different killer to the last, you cant have a one and done counter to every single one, you as survivor need to imagine your the spirit or bait her into imagining where you are.
That comment is correct but I can say the same thing about killers that arent spirit ot nurse, pallets and loops have no legitimate "counter play" you cannot use the same technique on every survivor, you have to invent your own or adapt for the survivor your facing and bait them into a mistake. Survivors skill for the most part decides chases versus these killers, they need the survivor to make a mistake, which makes them the power role by definition. But when this is reversed on the survivors and they have to make the killer make a mistake suddenly this system is wrong and there needs to be a change.
Part of my point is that if Spirit plays well she doesn’t need to imagine where you are; she KNOWS.
Pallets and loops do have counter play from the Killer side. Moon walking, other red stain manipulation, bloodlusting an unsafe pallet, several killer powers. I don’t think you’re making a fair comparison.

Some would complain too much I'd say as its two challenges if they did the challenge got 9k and were camped to death especially if they payed for the rift.
I just wish the challenges would enhance the normal game and take a certain degree of knowledge instead of skill instead of detracting from it like half them do.
Survivor examples
Opening doors, losing the killer, gens, totems, chests, healing, saving, distracting the killer, getting chased, escaping etc. Even mix them up with a couple or a few of each needing done in a game.
Bith sides could have some needing done with specific characters instead of just one of each side for a whole rift.
Just something where what they have to do doesn't interfere with someone else's experience.
I guess it's quite clear I'm not a fan of them at all 😂🤣.
Those examples are actually great ideas. Losing the killer, be in a chase for X seconds without getting hit, etc.

My bad quoted the wrong thing so i edited the post. We know Spirit is the only killer that has the clear advantage in a 1v1, its nice that people are finally dropping the mindgames/beads BS and moving onto the real reason.
Survivors want to be able to 1v1 killers while killers dont want 4 survivors to be able to 1v1 them. Thats the root of the issue and the devs will side with survivors.
I really tried hard to not make this another ‘Survivors vs. Killers’ meme. Seems like that’s where it‘a going though.
Edit: Posting on mobile ughhhh

"Survivors don’t dislike Spirit because she’s the only Killer that consistently dominates."
We already know the reason survivors complain about Spirit is that she is the only killer that consistently dominates in chases. After she gets nerfed its off to Freddy because he is the only killer that can slow the game down so much, after he gets nerfed its off to Billy because he is the only killer that can pressure gens so well, after he gets nerfed its off to...
That being said its nice that survivors are finally starting to say it instead of the usual mindgames/beads BS.
She’s not the only one that dominates chases, though. She’s the only one that does so without giving the survivors an opportunity for counter play. You’re not going to loop a good Huntress; but you might be able to bait a couple missed hatches. You’re not going to run loops on Freddy; but you can avoid the dream snares. Billy is eventually going to get Spirit Fury and be able to run up your back for a saw; but you can mind game him at a T L to avoid it.

I see the same and shows why they devs are releasing them in tiers but t the same time I kinda wish they could just open them all up and let them farm all of the chslkenges for a week or two so the normal game can be played again after it.
I just hope it doesn't turn the game into a challenge farming simulator after each tier is released for the whole duration.
I wonder is something like requiring at least 10k BP in order to progress your challenges would help?

I am enjoying the dbp but apart from that it doesn't feel like an event.
The gens and hooks don't warrant the price you pay for the pustuals and I don't see many being played. 1 out of 20 matches had full offerings and most had just 1 (mainly myself as I had no other blood point offerings). It's a Kinda take it or leave it.
Thinking about taking a break after the dbp is over till it's finished tbh. Mainly as I am hoping most will have done the challenges so I can get some normal games again. Seriously thinking about doing this each time a new tier is released as it's just not the fun dbd game I love with too many not actually playing and just seem to be grinding challenges out instead ☹.
I’m actually super frustrated with the people grinding out totems and box searches right now instead of playing normal games and letting it happen naturally. They’ll soon be complaining that there’s not enough content in the archives.

@Spirit_Hag said:
So im hoping this doesnt turn into too hot of a debate, but i have seen quite a few threads on how op the spirit allegedly is and how the devs say shes 'overperforming'. First off, im a bit confused as to why 'over performing' is a bad thing. You designed a killer that performs their job well and thats........bad?
Secondly, if you nerf her to bridge the gap between them and the other killers....wont we be stuck with just a bunch of 'meh' killers that wont have a good chance to perform well at red ranks? Seems to me, since people are so sick of seeing her at red ranks, that the best thing to do would be to buff other killers powers to be more viable allowing for more variety at red rank. Then you'll see less spirit and people probably wont be so harsh on her because they wont see her as often.
Lastly, i feel if you nerf her and bring her down to the other killers, wont it affect red rank queue times? With the number of viable red rank killers dwindling, i potentially see killers playing until purple rank then switching to survivor instead of playing into red rank due to the difficulty level and strong red rank swf. And after spirit, whos next? Billy? Hag? When does it end?
In conclusion, i feel like nerfing spirit may seem like it solves one problem, but could create so many more in the long run. Bring other killers to more viable levels and that seems to be the better idea, in my opinion.
Whats yours?
I’ve been saying this a lot recently, but it doesn’t seem to be catching on as easily as I hoped. The idea that Spirit is the only killer that’s viable at red ranks IS COMPLETELY UNTRUE. Red rank survivors don’t dislike Spirit because she’s the only one that dominates them. Hag, Billy, Freddy, Plague, Huntress, and Ghostface are not only viable, but oppressive in the right hands.
The reason survivors dislike Spirit is that there is no interaction with her power. She has an insurmountable advantage while phasing where the only thing a survivor can do is make a guess and hope they’re right. There’s no mind gaming; it’s simply a guess that determines whether or not you take a hit. That feels terrible, especially when you compare it to the other killers who need to earn a hit or down from you.

Could be better. Loser SWF every match that bring adrenaline, DS, OoO, and try hard addons.
Trust me, playing killer right now SUCKS. Stick to trolling with yer friends. You will be much happier.
It’s almost like we’re all in the same boat :)

scratch that. I just got robbed by server lag. TWICE in the SAME GAME my Dead Hard didn't fire. Then at the end it fired, then I ended up standing still for no apparent reason while I got killed at the exit
Devs - you can't justify your season pass at this point, your servers are in an unacceptable state.
You'd think the servers would be full by now, considering how many of my Dead Hards they've eaten. My condolences.

Also, USE YOUR OFFERINGS, PEOPLE!! You can bring coins and moris to do rift stuff after the event is gone!

Could be better, losers that bring mori's, facecamp, tunnel, broken add ons and all that.
Luckily doesnt bother me much in SWF since we just troll for WGLF stacks and focus on the archive challenges.
I haven't tried Killer yet but i'm not looking forward to it.
I queued for killer for about 5 minutes and decided I would rather get games in as survivor. Can't stand the long queues.

let me remember how my last matches were..Oh yeah! now i remember my last 5 matches as rank 3 survivor:
1)tunneled by a Spirit;
2)tunneled by a Spirit;
3)tunneled by a Spirit;
4)not tunneled but there were a Spirit;
5)A cool Myers let me farm with him as last survivor;
meh i'm not having fun at all, but i completed the first level of The Rift..
Lots of Spirehs, tunneling, and a little hint of face camping for me. But I’m still having fun! I looped for 4 gens in the game that screenshot is from!

Op didn't state he was not fine with changing her. He said he wants the low tiers buffed a little first. Which implies he is somewhat okay with Spirit getting their changes but wants lower tiered buffed first.
Ahh I see what you mean. Good point.

I think you misunderstood what they meant. They arent saying "Do not nerf Spirit at all" they are saying "close the gap from bottom tier to top tier a bit before nerfing another top tier"
Misunderstood what who meant? I’m replying to the OP, not the devs.

Change some of her add-ons, that is it
Don't even touch her basekit as its countered by back tracking, spine chill, mindgaming the mindgamer, etc
Those aren’t viable counters. There’s collision while she phases if you backtrack. Spine chill helps if your plan is to hide from her, but the oppressive part of her kit is how she performs in a chase.
The idea that she is mind gaming survivors is an illusion. It implies that she is giving the survivors information that fools them into making the wrong play. Survivors currently have NO information when she’s phasing, forcing them to make a guess and pray. That’s not mind gaming. Beyond that, the audio and collision she has while phasing give her an unbeatable advantage.

Is there a scenario where you would be okay with Spirit getting some changes? The devs outright said she’s over-performing. What else do we need to know before it’s okay to change her?
