What if we don't punish killers for playing?

What if, instead of constant nerfs and reductions in tactics, we start rewarding killers?

for example, do not punish the camp (which will absolutely be used by the survivors to attack)

    go from the opposite

for example, if the killer is not within a radius 16 meters of hook, then the survivor dies faster

and suddenly the killer gets more pressure from the hook and at the same time gets an incentive not to camp

Try to give a gingerbread instead of a whip

Why are people acting like killers not in a strong spot right now? Why are people actually defending face-camping? It’s bad game design and has no place in a party game.

    That is incorrect.

Superior options ARE incentives to forego other options. That's why you choose certain perks over others.

    Example:

Killer #1 Camps while the remaining Survivors finish gens. There is one, and only one chase. 2-3 generators are completed while that Survivor dies. The Killer has removed one Survivor (going to 3v1) at the cost of 60% escape completion. She may now engage in a second chase, but regardless of outcome, it should be the last of the game if she continues to Camp. And there is a real possibility the second Survivor escapes (if the rest of the team plays together).

Killer #2 uses the non-hex Devour Hope. His primary goal is win 3 Chases, regardless of target. By using gen perks, he'll find other Survivors. After the 3rd one is unhooked, he drops every Survivor with one swing for the rest of the game. After two more unhooks, he can mori anyone he hits once.

Which of those two Killers do you believe has a better chance of a 4k, will earn more BP, and doesn't need Camping or Tunneling in anyway?

Like I wrote before: it will solve the Camping/Tunneling complaints, but it will create a whole new realm of "Killer is too powerful" complaints.

P.S. It would take a little time, as many people do not read the DBD News/updates/whatever. I saw people trying to run Dead Hard for weeks after the patch.

I get what you’re saying and I like your thought process but very rarely does example 1 play out like your wrote it in my experience, especially solo queue which is the majority of players. Most survivors are rather altruistic and when they see someone is getting camped they try their best to save because they’d hate if that happened to them.

This is all my anecdotal experience though so take it with a grain of salt.

  • I miss old survivor movement, it actually felt fluid and responsive. Nowadays it feels more “realistic” but dbd has never been a game of realism.

  • I get this can be annoying but you can just push them out and save yourself two minutes…

The Devour Hope buff would not benefit Camping Killers, therefore it is not a "flat" buff.

Camping Killers would see no benefit what-so-ever.

Once again, killers receive the benefit of playing a 3v1. You’re not disincentivizing camping in this scenario so yes, you are asking a for a literal flat buff.

Camping Killers receive no buff with Devour Hope.

The benefits require the Killer to be a certain distance from the unhook.

Camping killers receive the benefit of playing a 3v1?? What do you mean they receive no benefit?

Face camping at least gives the killer some advantage in some circumstances. And if it happens to me, then I'm out the game quick and free to look for a new one. Tbagging has null reason to exist other than to taunt and mock, and it never fails to make a bad killer game a bit worse, or a good killer game a bit worse.

The pettiness makes it worse--it's saying "Even though this gives me no advantage at all, I still want to take time out of my day to make you feel bad."

And you know what? I could "just toughen up", but I shouldn't have to. I disagree that you should have to be jaded, closed-off and emotionally numb to participate in a social game, because dbaggerery is something nobody can make the effort not to be part of. How about if, no matter what role we're playing, we don't give someone else a game we wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of?

Where does it end? You take away the survivors ability to tbag and they’ll just find other ways to piss you off. Play against bots if it truly bothers you that much.

I personally don't think they're comparable, though I think one is influenced by the other. Action meet reaction.

But I think we need to start being honest about why people crouch/tbag and stop writing long explanations as to why it isn't BMing...or telling someone who disagrees with us that DBD isn't for them. That to me is ridiculous.

Tbagging is done to BM. Fact.

Tunneling and camping is not the same as Tbagging. Also fact.

Tbagging is only toxic if you let it be. It’s your choice whether or not to get upset about it. It’s a much healthier mentality to accept that some people will try to BM no matter what and just move on with your day. It has no effect on gameplay whatsoever.

  • That’s the inherent problem whenever you pit two different sides against each other. There will always be people who will die on hills no matter how short they are. A lot of people take it as personal attacks when you complain about their gameplay style.

  • I don’t get the whole “Wraiths not a good killer” thing anymore. I think he’s for sure above average and with the new heal speeds, hit and run is super effective with him. He’s a menace in solo q lobbies.

Pair him with sloppy, nurses and almost any of his add ons (they’re pretty much all good) and it’s gg to 90% of lobbies unless you commit to a survivor for too long.

Lightburn was a good interaction imo and was easily counterable when playing as wraith (flash bangs withstanded but are we really complaining about an off meta perk that counters a single killer? Plague counters every healing build but no one complains about that because perks and killers are supposed to counter each other).

  • I like how this has become so commonplace people are like “yeah they can literally take away 5 minutes of your time that you can’t do anything about, but just shake it off, it’s not like it’s against the rules”

    Part of the problem LMAO

  • @egg_ said:

You looped him for 5 minutes and your team mates managed to do only 3 gens?

    Sounds about right to me

  • DbD gets so much ######### (including from me lol) but it’s honestly such a great game and the fact it’s still going strong after 7 years is a testament to that.

You must be lucky enough to get zero survivors that try to 360 out of the killer's garbage FoV, and force the killer to quickly spin their camera in a desperate attempt to find out where they went.

I play with shadowborne every game so that’s definitely why

  • @Coffeecrashing said:

Forcing certain killers to be closer to a survivor is a nerf, because it’s much harder to hit a survivor the closer you are to them, especially if the survivor is turning faster than the intended turn rate.

Just my personal experience but I’ve always found it easier to hit survivors when I’m closer to them and don’t have to lunge

Ah, yes, expecting people who play online multiplayer video games to have systems that can handle recording and internet access to upload to YouTube is unreasonable. Sorry, my bad.

I’ve been playing games my whole life and I couldn’t tell you how I’d record a full match on my Xbox. Never had to or wanted to and there’s no replay system so…

How does their personal gameplay experience have nothing to do with the conversation? They specifically state that Solo Queue is “virtually unplayable” but fail to explain why. I just requested they show us how it’s unplayable.

I guess my request was unreasonable.

Expecting the average person to have the hardware and knowledge to record and upload a full 10+ minute match is rather unreasonable imo.

I didn’t know asking for OP to be more constructive and for gameplay videos of their matches being “unplayable” is condescending.

I would say that the OP is the one being condescending towards the devs.

OP has clarified multiple times that he simply wants to see how the devs would react to playing solo-q. Asking for his personal gameplay videos has nothing to do with the conversation.

  • @Huge_Bush said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3418262#Comment_3418262

I never claimed I experience none of these things, nor am I the one who posted a complaint thread. The onus to provide the evidence is on the OP since they’re the one who is having grievances with Solo Queue.

No, you instead decided to be condescending instead. Plus, OP has clarified themselves multiple times and you’ve continued to press.

  • @Huge_Bush said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3418219#Comment_3418219

I do need to see some evidence because I, as a solo queue player, do not have the same experience as the OP does. Sure, I’ll see some tunneling and camping here and there, but it’s no where near as rampant as the OP or other posters on the forums claim it is.

The solo queue experience has only improved over the years. The devs have done everything they could to make it better for solo players and it’s become so much better with the active hud information.

The daily complaints about solo queue that you mentioned are just that, complaints. There’s hardly any constructive discussion at all. It’s usually Killer OP or Killer is too easy with zero evidence to back up their statement.

Solo Queue players being inefficient isn’t a problem with the game. The devs can’t make the players better. The devs can’t force a duo swf to do gens and not chase the killer with flashlights. They can’t force players to learn how to loop and not go down on 5-10 seconds. They can’t force them to play killer in order to learn how their powers and abilities work and learn how to counter them when playing against them. They can’t force survivors to care about each other and work together, nor can they force killers to play how survivors want them to play. It wouldn’t be the game we all got addicted to and trying to do so would kill it.

The only thing that needs work is matchmaking, but that’s never going to get better because there’s simply not enough players across all the skill spectrum to match people appropriately.

But sure, y’all can whine as much as you want and accuse people asking for a proper discussion of not being genuine.

Would you mind providing video evidence on how you experience none of these problems as a solo-q player? According to your logic, you’ll be happy to post multiple videos or else your point is invalid :)

    Yes, Tunneling is made up.

Survivors will do the gen that's at 90%. Efficient, smart playing. Why do a gent at 0% when you have one almost complete?

But if Killers go after the wounded, previously hooked Survivor, it's 'tunneling' and 'toxic' for them to play efficiently. They are expected to ignore the wounded Survivor to go after the unwounded, never-hooked Survivor.

But I already admitted face-camping WAS legit. And then it was removed by allow Survivors to unhook from other angles.

    So try again.

I never said tunneling wasn’t a good strategy?? I’m saying it’s not a “made up term” by survivors, it’s 100% an objective thing that happens in this game, same with proxy camping. You’re not a bad person if you do it but at least have the balls to own up to it lol.

The beginning and end of this discussion is that you should just play how you want and people are allowed to comment on your playstyle. That's it. Nothing else should need to be discussed.

People invent rules that do what and result in what? 1 or 2 salty end game messages, and annoying tweet or reddit post here or there, or at worst, a profile comment. None of these are serious or pressing consequences. Play on anon-mode, don't use dbd-related social media, or just ignore it. These are all such simple suggestions that its impossible to have an intelligent discussion about the topic.

I'm a survivor main, but I grind killer to Iri1 every season for more BP's. Guess what, I camp, I tunnel, I slug, but I rarely, if ever get people that complain. Guess why?

Because I only do it when its fair-game to do so.

People asking you to not tunnel/camp/slug at 4-5 gens when someone dc'd or went next immediately is not at all comparable to doing the above when facing a bully/tryhard squad and I wish people would stop forcing this comparison.

If you want to win every game, then go for it, camp/tunnel/slug as much as you want. Just please stop trying to paint the narrative that killer mains are oppressed by double-standards.

This is the most sensible comment I’ve ever read on this forum. Thank you.

It would be if I did not know where anyone was. I mean, what's smarter?

    1. Keep hunting for people I have 0 idea about.
    2. Go back to the loud noise notification and hope they are healing or I see scratch marks I can chase.

Also; proxy camping' is not real. It's, once again, a fake phrase Survivors invented to complain. 'He was camping!" "He left the hook. How was he camping?" He was PROXY camping!"

And there are times Survivors unhook when I am walking away, and the bodyblock happens. Quit acting like the Killer broke some rule in order for this to happen.

Proxy camping is a term made up by survivors??

This is one I never thought I’d see lol.

What’s next? Tunneling and face-camping is just a term made up by salty survivors?

  • Love this idea, liminal horror could definitely work very well in this game IMO

  • @Seraphor said:

The dailies are there to incentivise branching out from your usual habits. If you only play one role, or one survivor, or one killer, it's to get you to do something else. Giving you separate dailies for each role would completely defeat this point.

You need to play both roles. Not playing both roles is what leads to myopic survivor/killer bias. It reduces toxicity, leads to better attitudes and the ability to accept when you lose. Furthermore, you will become a better survivor if you know how killer works, and vice versa.

Meanwhile, the rewards are low so that people don't feel forced to do something they don't want to do. It's a middle ground, to try and keep everyone happy.

I think the number and rate of daily rituals is just fine. It means you can log in every 2-3 days or so, and do about 2-4 dailies across multiple roles/characters. Much more than that, and you're pressured to log in every day. Who has time for that? let alone every four hours, are you insane @Aven_Fallen ? And if you increase the rewards, that pressure increases with it.

If you want more freedom in the challenges you attempt, that's what tomes are for. You can pick and choose what you attempt, you can do it at any time, they never expire.

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3385224#Comment_3385224

This is also my only gripe. The worst one for me has to be Pyramid Head's, as survivors inevitably avoid torment as much as they possibly can. Demo is definitely a point of contention when I make several successful Shreds but a couple of them were apparently one millisecond short of a full charge.

Pig I never have an issue with, you just have to land 4 ambushes, that's not difficult, I managed 6-10+ ambushes per game and if you're not using the killers power, why are you playing them?

I agree that it’s good to incentivize people to play both sides but they’ve already added that feature now with giving double to 1.5x bloodpoints for roles that are lower in population.

I don’t really see your problem with giving multiple dailies for both sides, since that would incentivize people to play both roles like you’re advocating for. Also having the ability for them to refresh more frequently like @avenfallen suggested is a great idea in my opinion. There’s no fear of missing out since they’re completely optional in the first place and don’t give you extrinsic rewards other than extra bloodpoints (not like it gives battle pass credit or anything).

  • It is rather annoying and unfair that there are some maps where kicking the boon is actually just as detrimental to not kicking it, ironworks is a great example, third floor library in RCPD also comes to mind.

  • @BrokenSouI said:

Weaker ? Not even close. Demo takes forever to portal. Especially depending on distance. You need to set down a portal or be one near to portal. And it has a cool down after you do port for some reason

Sadako has a set portal time. It's fast. It's her biggest strength. There's no cool down and can be done from anywhere. She can feel like she's everywhere at once. The amount of holding W she cuts out helps compensate for chases that may take longer because she is m1. If there was LESS tvs. I would say she's sorta weak. But her porting is everything. I've 4kd every match with her so far.

Out of the 15 or so games I played with her yesterday there was only one where I didn't 3 or 4k and it was my second match with her on The Game. Her teleportation is so good at applying a lot of pressure really quickly, there were multiple games where it felt like I didnt go over 10 seconds without chasing someone.

Agreed, but those good works gets overshadowed with all the amount of problems with the current balance of the game / MMR.. showing something that everyone already knew... the maps are badly designed against people that are good and killer gameplay has reach the point were is so unfun to play due to boons / dead hard / busted tiles were you can't do nothing to even get more than 1 kill.. same for survivor solo Q is horrible right now.

I can agree with this. The Boon meta for sure makes her not as viable as she would have been 6 months ago. Maps and dead hard as you pointed out definitely never help with M1 killers either. If boons get nerfed/reworked though (as they should BHVR) she will definitely be the standard for M1 killers.

  • @Steel_Eyed said:

She may be weak, but she is fun. And spooky. Mostly spooky.

I feel that this is what a lot of people are missing. I don't genuinely care if the new killers they release are "S tier" or "high MMR viable". I want to enjoy playing a killer that doesn't feel boring for both sides to play as or play against. Sadako is the first killer in a long time that has made me feel both of these things.

Shut up with this fps thing. From 2016 to 2019 I played DbD on a crappy laptop and at best I'd get 25fps. Not even then would I get spun more than the first time.

Yes, as much as I hate this phrase, git gud.

Your personal, anecdotal experience does not represent everyone else's views. I've had multiple friends that have gotten into this game on old gens and new gens and had major tracking problems when people spin due to the lack of visual cues and frame drops. Not to mention how dead hard would literally freeze your screen for a half second every time it was used...

I understand that there are definite, easy ways to play around 360s and jukes, but I feel you can't say with confidence that you've never been frustrated when you feel the game is more at fault for something occurring than the player is.

This. It's genuinely a case of "git gud". 360s don't work on good killers. I had a hard time with them when I was starting out too. You eventually learn to deal with them. They become free hits and benefit the killer at times since the survivor is gaining less distance. By all means, try to 360 a good Blight or Nurse and watch how quickly they two tap a survivor.

360s were a big problem for me when I played on my last gen console. 30 or below fps playing against PC players spinning at 120 fps was a nightmare. I feel bad for my people still stuck on last gen as playing killer on it is a nightmare due to this.

While this can be a “git gud” scenario, this problem has more to do with awful frame rate, latency, and auto aim.

Why not? They've got 16 perks between them. Meanwhile killers are forced to run perks that don't even counter survivor's perks adequately.

This is assuming the survivors are in a group and have their 16 perks known to each other. Solo Q survivors will run what perks they want because they don’t know what their teammates are running.

And yes, you’re correct in saying that killers don’t have exact counters to survivors perks, but they have perks that counter survivors playstyles. There are plenty of gen stalling, altruistic countering, anti-stealth, and anti-looping perks that killers can use. Not to mention you can run literally none of these perks and still camp and tunnel a player out effectively. This is a game design issue, not a player issue.

  • “Nerf all the best survivor perks and watch the survival rate drop”

This is the equivalent of saying watch a pro golfer hit with a 7 iron off the drive and it doesn’t go as far.

Nerf all the best killer perks and watch the kill rate plummet.

See how nerfing everything isn’t the fix you might think it is? The solution is better game design, always has been always will until they actually fix it.

As Survivor though, I do have to say, my teammates were WAY better than what I was seeing afterwards.

I’ve always kind of enjoyed this as an Xbox player. Not the long waits for queues, but always enjoy playing with survivors or against them that I’ve seen in previous games, and with Xbox, I feel I’ve played with every person in my region lol

    You´re welcome.

My problem is more with the health and enjoyment of the game for both sides, not survivors or killers “winning” or killers following the “survivor rule book”.

I’m aware that tunneling is a great way to apply pressure early on, and makes the game way easier for killer. This post isn’t about that, I’m simply saying it is not healthy and not enjoyable so long term game health wise, is not a good look when the player base has already been dropping for 5 months straight. Maybe to you, but to me and what I assume the majority of the player base; camping and tunneling is a snooze fest for both sides that just increases the already present toxicity in this game.

Game design is the number one issue here, I’m not blaming the players for this situation.

  • It's usually a BM thing, as the survivor can't do anything about it but sit and watch

If the Devs would Balance the Insane Gen Speed, Nerf Dead Hard and CoH or Networking the Maps so they are going to be smaller Killers would have a better Chance and less Killer would Camp or Tunneling

I definitely agree with this, and in no way am I blaming killers for either camping or tunneling. I understand why it's necessary if you want to play with a chance of getting a 4k against a team that knows what they are doing. This is entirely a development and game design issue, and it all comes down to the dev team not understanding what their community wants. There is literally years and years of feedback and suggestions on how to promote more healthy interplay between the survivors and killers, but they seem to disregard 99% of the feedback they receive, and do what they think is best for the game.

  • do you mind me asking why that is? Personally, I don’t enjoy any of the indoor maps as they all feel very clunky to me. One thing I do enjoy about midwich though, is how unpredictable the games turn out most of the time.

If you and your team decide not to run Decisive Strike, you and your team have decided to forfeit all matches where the killer is willing to pick up a recently hooked survivor.

And this is inherently the problem. Survivors shouldn’t be forced to run perks to avoid an outcome that can be fixed by better game design.

I’m sorry but I don’t really understand this argument. Many games that have cross play exclude PC due to their performance and control advantage over consoles, and I’d say that the former is extremely prevalent in this game.

I am not the developers, I am not against them fixing their product. Yet that is not a problem with crossplay. Or are you claiming Switch versus PS5 is anywhere equivalent?

Console players have it bad, but don't act like each console is identical or what not. Don't want to deal with differences... opt out. Cherry picking so you can choose everyone that has it worse than you to avoid others that have it better than you is selfish and egotistical boosting of your own playerbase at the expense of others and not a solution.

Crossplay is to bridge the community and play together, not a means to boost your selfish needs.

Pulsar is not selfish at all for saying that he doesn’t want to play against PC players when cross play is enabled, only against similar consoles such as PS4 (and to my knowledge he plays on an Xbox One). What is so selfish about being able to play with your friends on separate consoles but not put yourself at an inherent disadvantage by playing against players with 100 more FPS and minimal stutter/lag?

Theres nothing “elitist” about this at all. People just want to have fun with what they’re given, not be at a disadvantage by not being able to afford a $2000 PC.

Console has always been treated as the little brother in this community, and always will be.

Yup, all of you guys are entitled as hail. Everybody demands instant fixes but you guys have no idea how difficult and slow going it is to find the cause of bugs, much less fix them. Yes, I get it, some of you fools spent huuuundreds of dollars on this game. That's on you, they can end support of this game at any time and you couldn't do anything about it. Its 5 years old. I've spent a total of $30 on this game and have all the killers. Game was free, all non licensed killers obtained with shards, and licensed killers obtained during half off sales. Just to show you how much its on you for spending all that money.

This is possibly the lamest response I’ve seen on this thread

You can check how many hours they have when you click compare gamerscores on their profile

  • This is such a strange take. This is a horror game and these are all killers, they’re not supposed to all be sex icons.
