The problem was that they had mentioned hetero sexual relationships in the past despite saying they intentionally don’t want to mention sexuality at all.
now after feedback and questions from the community (high amount due to pride month) they revised their statement and said they won’t exclude LGBT+ in the future.
-
It does not feel like pandering at all to me. They have mentioned before there are LGBT+ people in the roster. They are now revising their statement because of the feedback and questions they get that are of course higher in this time.
not answering this now would feel also wrong, there was not really something they could have done that would please everyone. But the way the have done this does not feel forced. They did not just implement a new LGBT char and revealed it now. They answered their community. They were inclusive before.

"you said you don’t give a f about the nurses sexuality, but then you said you don’t want any LGBT+ stuff in the game? That is very contradicting. Either you don’t care or you don’t want it."
-True, I do care about it as I don't want an entire character built around the principle of being Gay or whatever. If the character has a rich backstory and some pretty good lore overall with a sprinkle of "and btw he's gay" on top, then cool! I don't mind it at all. But if it's a Neeko situation where the entire character is made to be lesbian/gay, then I do have a problem with that.
"have you considered they add it not because of whiners but because they actually gradually expand the lore in every aspect? I didn’t see that many people that were against the tome backstories though."
- That would actually be awesome imo. I think it will be pretty obvious if they gave in to the whiners or if they actually wanted to expand the universe.
But as far as we know this will exactly be the case.
there is nothing in the tweet that indicates they will make a completely new char with their only trait being LGBT (exactly no one wants this or asked for this here iirc).

This seems like another one of those "JK Rowling" moments where there's a completely useless piece of info given with no meaning behind it, just to please some whiners that want to see gay stuff everywhere.
I don’t know anything about that JK Rowling stuff, and frankly I don’t care.
you said you don’t give a f about the nurses sexuality, but then you said you don’t want any LGBT+ stuff in the game? That is very contradicting. Either you don’t care or you don’t want it.
it is also as useless or meaningless as every other part of the Backstory/Lore.
have you considered they add it not because of whiners but because they actually gradually expand the lore in every aspect? I didn’t see that many people that were against the tome backstories though.

Lets see guys you know that its a multiuniverse so there is a lesbian nurse, gay Dwight etc etc... There is no sense for adding sexual orientation.
Just think it as you like if you think nea is lesbian is okay its a multiverse, there will be all orientation neas.
This argument can be said about every single lore/backstory bit though. Either have it all or none. Leaving everything LGBT+ explicitly out but having everything they already had was not the way.

@Antimon said:
Who the f*ck gives a sheisse about Nurse's sexuality? It doesn't matter.
Well then this whole topic shouldn’t affect you at all.
it does matter for others though, and there were always people that cared for the lore, so let them.
-
@Antimon said:
Yeah, today's characters seem bland and just copies of others.. They're really losing imagination. And it shouldn't matter if someone is gay in the game or whatever, it has no correlation to the game at all. And even if they would go into that direction and say that X character is gay, then why not make someone schizophrenic or with depression?
No one said that we will never get characters that are schizophrenic or depressed, or did they?

Okay you got me,now I want a indian killer or survivor or they will be racist more over I want a grey alien killer or are they racist of aliens?
They could very well add characters with those traits. They never said they will not.
they will also likely not add a character for every possible gender/sexual orientation. But they said in the past they will never mention the sexual orientation but -because they already contradicted themselves in some way- they now stated they won’t restrict themselves in this area anymore. That’s all they said in the tweet really.

Cool, so they actually might go all the way into controversy, can't wait to read the news articles
no, they will just tell the stories they want to tell and make the characters they always did, we already know that at least one character is in fact LGBT+, but we don’t know who and what exactly.
i don’t really think the Lore of DbD will be heavily mentioned in any news articles, nor is there any controversy from BHVR. If there will be, then it will come from the haters, that are just searching for something
-
As of now, they didn’t add any LGBT+ char and I noticed no message that explicitly stated they want homo-, bi- and asexual characters but not trans.
They will just add those themes in the backstories/lore of the characters (new and old) and don’t restrict themselves anymore. They didn’t say they will forcefully add one person for every orientation.

Personally, I don't want to know anything about the sexuality of any characters. I don't care who's married or who's shacking up. The survivors are meatbags to be hung on hooks, the killers are misshapen freaks who chase the meatbags. ######### are we doing here? Who gives a rats arse if Meg likes boys are girls? Meg is getting a spiked rod up the butt from the Doc and hooked. Does not matter either way. Enough with this stupidity.
Yeah that’s a totally fine way to look at it.
but there have been mentions of hetero relationships in DbD, and now the just will not restrict themselves to also mention same-sex or other relationships.
it literally changes nothing and shouldn’t be such a big topic.

What concerns me more is
How would you tell if you're being targeted cause you you're playing a LGBT character, or because you are in a dead zone, or just not good at looping, making you a perfect target for all killers?
Imagine in post chat someone being accused of being homophobic cause they targeted the weak link in the team, that happens to be playing a LGBT character.
I have already seen accusations of racism because the killer got to kill one char that happened to be black.
if the killer really targeted someone because of racism/homophobia, they will want to let you know that, so chances are they will also write hateful messages in chat and thus can be reported.

Depends on the killer and the Exit gate placements and if I already know where the hatch is and if the killer already knows and... too many variables. I do pretty much all the above mentioned.
and if I have a „open gate with char“ daily, I will have Wake Up! equipped and will under all circumstances try to get a gate open. If killer is dangerously near and I can’t open I try to gesture that I only want the gate and tun to a hook if they let me

I'd rather not get political. I don't know why people insist on dragging politics onto apolitical forums like DbD.
I wasn’t sure why you brought up Trump and made a joke (trying without taking one side) but I just googled TDS. Well. Uhm. I don’t get these political topic jumps.

Wait? Now Trump joins the DbD roster? As a killer or survivor?
what will his Perk „Make America great again“ do??

@KRG so.... I told myself I was going to stay away from the thread after the amount of negativity. However after a night of thinking about it and hanging with my friends and relaxing I really feel like I need to defend myself on this. I'm bi, if you think that me simply mentioning my sexuality is screaming it than I feel sorry for you because that kind of annoyance must be so draining. Here's the thing though, this isn't your safe space, this isn't my safe space either. This is a forum board where I appropriately took the time to talk about a decision from the devs and what that meant for me as a person. Everyone here has a right to say what they feel but that also means others have a right to respond in kind, or in some peoples cases hatred. This also means that I did need to mention that this kind of decision is incredible different from the world I grew up in and that it brings me tears of joy that companies are finally starting to take a stand for basic human rights. You can be supportive without speaking, but vocal support is so much stronger than silent support. That's why I'm so happy that Behavior is taking a public stand.
You say don't play the victim and I'm not, I use to be a victim but I'm not anymore because I refuse to be. You're trying to take this post into a different direction that it was never meant to be in simply because of the subject matter that you don't approve of. I refuse to apologize for this, but I do feel empathy towards you and any grievance this may have caused because if I cant do that for you how could I ever expect you to do it for me. People simply talking about there sexuality isn't the same as screaming it, it also doesn't define me, being bi is a part of myself and a very intimate one at that but I am also so many things than just my sexuality. The thing is though is that this recent decision by the devs is centered around sexuality, so the focus is put onto it.
You say that it has no place in gaming but you're wrong. Videogames are devices to tell stories and ideas, they could be simple or they can be complex but ultimately they reflect ourselves and our world. The devs are writing and showing us the backstory of these characters that we play, this means we will learn about them and that includes their sexuality. This doesn't mean the devs will be writing erotic fiction for their characters the most likely outcome from this decision is that they wont be bothered or hold themselves back anymore by mentioning who people use to have relationships with like they recently have done for David, Nurse, Wraith, and Dwight. This is also the best outcome because the ultimate goal of representation is that it should just be normal. Writing a gay character is more offensive than not writing one, the best thing to do is to write a character who happens to be gay, it can be a part of them but shouldn't have to define them. This fits well with all the characters who have already been written simply because we know so little about them. Nobody is born knowing they are gay, or bi, or lesbian or whatever. They discover it as they grow into themselves as a person. this also means people don't introduce themselves as gay when they meet someone, that's discovered when they feel like it matters. If the devs decide to let us in on the sexuality of a character that's fine because they are deciding that it was finally the time to discus it.
This post was never suppose to be about me, it was always suppose to be about my happiness for the decision and to say thank you for the writing team at Behavior.
So there, that's my piece on the subject and to anyone who had issues with my post. I'm not sorry but I do feel empathy for you, I hope you all can grow as people an eventually be able to do the same.
Thanks for your time. Lots of love.
This is so well written! I couldn’t write something that well in my native language if my life depended on it..
thank you so much for not staying silent and for not letting the negative comments get the upper hand!

There’s nothing wrong with anyone being gay in the game, being bi I would be happy if gay characters were in the game but it can’t happen and shouldn’t happen. Certain people will target and go out of their way to be toxic to a gay character. It’s the reason we can’t have pride charms despite many people wanting them. It’s fine the way it is currently with fans choosing someone’s sexuality in their own mind.
I also don’t want Bhvr to pull a JK Rowling and out of nowhere say “trapper is gay, david kissed dwight, nurse actually loves hag” and so on. Forced sexuality would be cool but it isn’t really needed in a game where people get pulled and forced into dying forever.
It will happen though and those arguments shouldn’t really be a reason it should not happen.
same could be said about people with different skin color or something else.
if someone is that hateful, chances are they will out themselves in Gamechat and can be rightfully reported for it.
“trapper is gay“ could be a totally legit statement though, why not (as long as it will be part of a broader backstory and not just that statement alone)? The other statements would actually feel very forced because as of now we don’t have any relationships between characters (or are there any?)

The best kill rate I will get is when I play survivor and get my teammates killed by accident, does that count?

You don’t have to, that’s totally fine! but there are people that care and it does not hurt anybody to include non hetero relationships. And there are people pretty much saying „I don’t care but pls exclude everything gay“
Lore and backstory of characters is nothing new, so actually nothing should really change with this but some people feel more included in a way.

I ve started playing recently and also recently joined the forums as you can see from the number of my posts. I'd reacted the same way cuz i don't see stuff like this important for the game. How about they fix bugs and balance it better. Priorities my people and not this. Use youre imagination and every character can be gay, straight or whatever else you want him to be.
Well the problem was they said they won’t mention the sexuality of character so that you could self insert etc. But they did mention multiple heterosexual relationships (notably Nurse was married to a man, Julie and Frank, David had an ex).
so in a way they contradicted themselves and excluded everything non hetero.
now they just mentioned they revised their stand on this and they will include LGBT+ in the lore etc. because of people giving feedback and questioning them about it.
this will in no way stand in the way for bug fixing etc. The people writing the lore etc are not the same and will not actually work more on it now, they are just not restricted anymore.

I am sick of posts like this one. I dont have anything against gay people, but come on, you dont need to go around and scream that you are gay. Keep your sexual orientation for yourself and just play the game. We don't need that kind of stuff in gaming. Sorry for your tough times but its life and youll just get stronger. Dbd has nothing to do with it so you might search for a help somewhere else. Peace.
Sorry but the fact that posts like this make you feel sick is just telling that you do have something against gay people. (Alone that phrasing.. lol)
just keep your hate to yourself and ignore posts like this. They don’t attack you and shouldn’t affect you in any way if you don’t have anything against any LGBT+ people/chars.
DbD and the creators of DbD just stated that they do have something to do with it and they want to include people of the community and they don’t want to exclude anyone.
-
Hag and Wraith will be pretty cool for killer lore I suppose. Maybe something in their past that shows their more violent nature even though there were both not violent people at all!
for survivors I guess Adam would be cool (just to get a new outfit in the rift)
-
i just hope they don’t give every character an explicit sexual orientation, they should just mention it in the lore if it fits there.
also I hope Yui will be either straight or bi, just because the lesbian leader of an all female biker gang would be kinda cliche.

You just made the same argument twice now. It is just as lousy of an argument the second time. It is ridiculous to expect players to not play a game in case their favorite characters are made gay at a distant point in the future. And btw, the flip side of this argument is true too. If you are gay and you've decided in your mind that a particular character identifies with you and now all of the sudden that character is given a very specific identity and backstory that is inconsistent to your worldview, wouldn't that make you upset? You've spent lots of resources getting the cosmetics you like. You've earned all the bloodpoints to get their perks all at rank 3. You've spent a lot of time playing that character. Now that character is given an identity that is 100% straight. No problem with that?
Not a problem at all.
because they never stated that character would be gay. But also because I don’t care for the sexual orientation of the character at all.
i made the same argument because your argument was the same, you are saying they might change the char in the future and that will stop you from playing that char, I say they don’t change the char, they just add something, as long as there are no contradictions to previously stated lore there should be no problem. They are not making a char gay, they are just not restricting themselves in the future and are now able to mention same-sex relations and other personal backstory lore, which they already now add to existing chars.
oh and just to get as personal as you: your arguments were the lousy ones from the beginning. How could you care that much about some fictional character? And even if stated officially, you can still have your own lore in mind (I think it’s called head canon?) and nothing would change.

That is a poor argument to make. "You should just never play any game ever in case at some point in the future they make a change you don't like." That is basically what you said. To answer your question, as a rule I do prefer to play characters that are the same gender as me. Will I play characters with different genders? Sure. Whatever. It isn't a deal breaker. I might play a survivor that is gay too. But I don't particularly like an identity being forced on a character that I've been playing for a long time. That is the point I'm making.
But they didn’t state they would change any character. As of now, no character was given any explicit sexual orientation. But we all know that every character has some kind of sexual orientation.
if you don’t want to play a gay character then you shouldn’t play any character that could be gay, and you won’t know for sure until the creator of said character states their sexual orientation, that is not equal to changing that char.

I'd say the same thing to people who say, "I can play X now that I'll know I'm being represented!"
Did you just...not play anyone before?
What @Orion said.. who said that? I just read that there are people who are happy that they could have characters to play that they can identify with, but never did they say they wouldn’t play as anyone else..
-
@Dreamnomad said:
I don't particularly care if they have gay, bi, transgender or non-binary (or anything else in between) characters in DBD. But I do wish that they had the foresight to make this decision from the beginning. I'm not particularly fond of the idea of a character that I've put a lot of time, bloodpoints, money or other resources into getting cosmetics for suddenly becoming gay or whatever. Again, I don't have a problem with LGBT stuff. It's just that I don't identify that way and I prefer to play characters that I do identify with. Which is why I can understand where the gay community is coming from wanting to have characters that they do identify with.
Then you should have never played any character at all tbh. They have stated before that there are LGBT characters but they didn’t want to explicitly state them. Do you also only play characters that have the same gender as yourself?
DbD characters always had defined backstories and were never just blank ‚insert yourself‘ characters and we always knew there was more to every character that we just did not know yet.

So this will be my final post for this thread because to be honest this turned into something that makes me genuinely uncomfortable. I didn't realize me expressing happiness for a decision and talking about how I'm happy that a company will include representation when for a majority my life media has been used to treat LGBTQ+ people as villains or mentally ill people along side the world doing the same in both nonviolent and violent ways would anger so many people. My bad, in the future I'll choose to not talk. Didn't mean to make anyone uncomfortable.
You don’t have to respond to this thread anymore if you don’t feel comfortable to do so, but please don’t let this hatred silence you completely! You have a right to express your opinion just as they have the right to do so. It’s not your fault others may get angry about that, you did nothing wrong here and you didn’t attack anyone personally (as far as I saw). That’s on themselves and it was definitely not your post alone that invoked those feelings in them.

And I agree, completely. The way I see it, this goes both ways: if David’s ex story had said that HE didn’t want to see him again, it should be no more earth-shattering than how it reads. That’s all I think BHVR are trying to get at with their tweet. Some lore snippets will have that kind of thing in them going forward, and that’s not a bad thing at all.
That’s exactly what I hope for!
dont bring a new tag in the survivor overview that shows their orientation, just being here and there a snippet in the lore just like they do now with straight relations. And don’t make it a must-have for every character either. Just where it fits and it doesn’t restrict the writers, because it was some kind of restriction until now.

What is bisexuality?
maybe the words came out wrong? Where did I exclude or ignore bisexuality?
i explicitly stated they have stated sexuality OR part of the sexuality of some characters.
For all I know, the Nurse could be straight or lesbian or bisexual, the thing is they have mentioned (potential) straight relations but avoided any other.
-
Well they did state the sexuality or part of the sexuality of some characters before. (At least the Nurse was married to a man and as mentioned above David has an ex girlfriend; I am sure there are other mentions).
they just reflected on themselves and saw that this could be interpreted as some kind of exclusion or contradiction to what they previously stated so I see it as totally not problematic at all as long as they don’t create a character whose only personality trait is their sexuality, and i am confident that they will be able to integrate it without it feeling forced or something.
-
I don’t try hard, but if the skill check position is comfortable I will at least try to get it at least near the great skillcheck area.

but gesturing to farm and then falling in their back is still somewhat scummy, so congrats for that I guess?
-
SWF can be problematic, but they mostly are not. And most killers would be surprised if they really got to know who were SWF and who were not. I am getting called out for it on soloq way too often.

It’s just a dumb design choice. It should be enough to see the characters/skins and items. It would also make grieving one specific survivor nearly impossible.

We kinda already have DS and BBQ, both are highly valuable and licensed..
Perks that are even more OP will be reworked or nerfed accordingly so that you don’t ever NEED them (looking at MoM)
