You could look at the less ancedotal evidence.
If they're looking at bots for backfill, there's probably a population problem.
I'm in favor of this though, hopefully they'll get rid of DC penalties and hook suicides next.
You really think getting rid of DC penalties will be good for the game? Haven't you seen what happened when they've done this in the past? The game becomes unplayable for survivors.
-
At least in my region (US eastern time zone), I have instant killer queues any time after 5:00 PM all through the night, so that's telling me that there is still an excess of survivor players, at least during that time period. During the daytime, killer queue times are usually longer than survivor queue times, but killer queue times are still nowhere near as long as survivor queue times during the peak evening hours. I sure don't see any evidence that "nobody wants to play survivor", and I'd be willing to bet that a majority of the overall player base plays survivor either a majority of the time or 100% of the time.

Watch them add bots for 2v8
They probably will, and it will kill the game (at least whatever modes they use bots in). There is a large % of players (including myself) that will just go play something else if they introduce bots into the game outside of the DC backfills.
-
If I see a bot in a lobby, I'm out. This is such a terrible direction for the game.
-
I use it because I don't play the game that often and I don't memorize where every single vault and window are. I don't have 18 hours a day to play this game that apparently some people in this thread do.

I would say it depends on the skill level of the survivors. I go against very good survivors on a regular basis. These players know how to run every loop, greed pallets and have no problem staying injured to get gens done. Against these type of players, I find it extremely difficult to win without tunneling someone out.
If I'm going against average to low skill players, it's much more feasible to win without tunneling.

If one person can win without tunneling, then so can anyone else.
But most people won't. They'll just do what they want. As Pulsar said, most people will take the path of least resistance. Not because it's necessary, but because it's easier.
This is an incredibly flawed statement. So if the best player in the world can without tunneling, then anyone can? OK
-
It's pretty clear that BHVR aren't going to do anything about this. They could enforce ping limits in lobbies, but that would mean they would have fewer players and thus less revenue. Or they could support more servers in regions that don't currently have any, but that would mean more expenses. Either way, BHVR are prioritizing bottom line over customer experience. I'm not saying it's right or wrong - every company has to make similar tradeoff decisions. BHVR will have to deal with the consequences if players decide to leave because of this issue. Right now, that doesn't appear to be the case. Plenty of people are still playing the game and spending money on it despite the fact that BHVR refuses to implement ping limits in lobbies.
-
This isn't a problem with genrush. It's a problem with coordinated 4-man teams breaking the game with unfair advantages of communication and coordination of perks. BHVR has made it pretty clear they're never going to do anything to address this unfair advantage, so you have a few choices. 1) Suck it up and be a survivor punching bag when you get into a match like this; 2) lobby dodge; or 3) stop playing the game altogether. Those are the choices that BHVR have given killer players to deal with an uneven playing field.

Please explain to me why we are still getting penalties for dcing out of a match when a bot is put in our place? Especially now when the amount of times survivors are dealing with slugging, and over all really crummy game play from killers. I would understand more if there wasn't a bot put in our place but there is, so why should we still get punished for leaving a match we don't want to be in? Day after day, I spend hours playing DBD and as a survivor main, this game has lost it's fun. Out of ever 10 or more matches I play I can escape maybe less then a handful of those matches due to the current meta surrounded by the base kit mori AND the fact that there is more insensitive for the killer to get their 4k by any means necessary. Why should I have to stay in a match where my team is already getting slugged and tunneled off hook at FIVE GENS. Also there have been enormous times where the GAME has kicked me out and I have gotten a penalty for that. It's not fair and needs to be addressed. Why even have it set so a bot takes our place, might as well just remove that feature if people are still gonna get punished for dcing out of the game. I am so tired of going into match after match with killers that can't stand the thought of losing, of even a single person getting out so they resort to slugging just to make sure that doesn't happen or tunneling the person they just hooked right off hook OR camping to ensure no one can get them off or even if they unhook they are just knocked down and hooked again. BHVR needs to rethink how they address these issues because they favor those who play killer above those that do not. It makes the game enjoyably and for most games unplayable.
The DC penalty is working exactly as intended - to discourage players like you from ruining other people's games because you quit if you aren't having fun. Screw everyone else, right?
Also, the game will not give you a DC penalty if the server kicks you out.

Not with determined killers or if they know how to abuse the power in the game.
I have no idea what you are talking about here. When I play killer, I suppose I would consider myself "determined" in that I try to win, and I certainly don't win every game. Maybe I'm just not very good. What do you mean by "abusing the power"?

Which is a sign to me that it's time for me to dip out of DBD, so to speak.
If BHVR is willing to throw LGBTQ+ people under the bus for more money, then I'm not interested in supporting them. I really should have seen this coming during the NFT debacle, but I had hope that it was an exec decision and not a reflection of the company as a whole.
So are you going to check the political affiliations and viewpoints of the owners and employees of every single business that you ever patronize to make sure they don't hold any views that you find objectionable? That seems incredibly exhausting.

It certainly depends on how far along you are in the grind. I'm at about 2,200 hours in the game now, but that has been over the course of 6 years as I'm a pretty casual player. I have bought/played maybe half the killer roster and a bit more of the survivor roster, and am at the point now where I have pretty much everything I want that I can spend bloodpoints on. I have one survivor up to P100 and am working on getting a killer to P100 but I really don't care at all about prestige levels - it's just really the only thing there is left to do. For a player like me, I would much rather have auric cells or shards to buy cosmetics for the characters that I play regularly. I understand why BHVR doesn't hand those out like candy the way they do BP - it means less revenue for them because people aren't spending money on auric cells.

I apologise I'm jumping on you, I've got no beef with you personally but I've read a few posts like this and your comment here is the one that has struck the nerve one too many times...
Think about what you just said... you are actually proposing that BHVR should make their employees work through the holidays? You believe that award is not deserved cause they don't?
I guess the amount of content BHVR churn out for us ingrates on such a demanding deadline counts for sod all.
This right here is why only people who truly love programming should go into game development and why I never did after I got my degree, and I got a very good degree.
Customer demand/expectation in gaming is ignorant at best and insanely entitled at worst. Ridiculous man hours, job security is non existent, high staff turnover, incredible ease of a studio getting shut down any moment, relatively low income for that line of work, incredibly complex and challenging work that takes a huge toll on your personal life, health and relationships... and all while everyone calls you lazy, undeserving, useless and greedy to boot. It is like all the problems of retail but cranked up to 11.
I have seen this attitude in every game community I've ever been a part of... and game devs have always out of necessity had to just take it, cause we've seen what happens when devs answer back... they get labelled as egotists who "are out of touch with their fan base" and can caused the afformentioned game review bomb and/or studio shutdown.
I have many friends who are in the thick of it. They are exceptionally talented people who work their butt off trying to swim in this crazy industry, and am aware of exactly what great things they achieved that didn't produce the respect and rewards in the gaming market it deserved. It's kinda a horror show to watch at times.
Again, I'm sorry it's you I've bitten the head off, but it's so frustrating to constantly keep reading how ungrateful and ignorant people are when it comes to game development.
I didn't say what I said without thinking about everything that you mentioned. BHVR can handle their business any way they choose to. People absolutely deserve time off. I have no problem with them taking as much time off as they want to over the holidays. But if you are running a live service game, especially during a limited-time holiday event, then you also need to be willing to put in the resources needed to fix things that are broken. If you decide not to do that, then don't be surprised when your paying customers become impatient and upset. Running a business is always a balance between keeping your customers happy and keeping your employees happy. Lots of businesses (and their employees) have to make sacrifices to keep their customers satisfied, especially during holiday periods. This is not just some unique demand on the gaming industry. I work in the chemical industry where we have to ship product out the door to our customers every day, including during the holidays. We could choose to shut down for a couple weeks too, but would then have to deal with the consequences of negative customer experience.
-
Mistle Toes are busted and won't be fixed because everyone is on vacation for the next 2 weeks. But they want us to vote for the game for the Labor of Love award.

when escape rates were higher […] survivor queue times were ridiculously long
Source? I don't know who invented that claim and why it remains so popular, but survivor queues were not particularly longer in 2021, and killrate was 50% back then.
This is something you can easily verify yourself, search for "2021 dbd VODs" on Youtube, then pick random ones. The vast majority of queues seem to take less than 15s, arguably faster than today.
Source? My own experience. I played back then. I remember what it was like. How can you draw conclusions from Youtube videos? First of all, you have no idea what time of day they were playing. Survivors queues have always been shorter during off-peak times. Second, there is self-selection with Youtube video uploads. Nobody is going to upload videos where they are spending 15-20 minutes waiting in a survivor queue. So there's a good reason why you only see short wait times when watching Youtube clips.

Okay got it. So 60-40 win rate is fair but 50-50 is unfair. Interesting. Why dont we try 55-45 and see how that goes. Oh only 10% advantage isn't enough? It has to be 20%? Interesting. Imagine any other game.where one side gets to.just demand to have the upper hand mechanically and then paint the other side that actually wants a more fair game as whiners and complainers.
I'm not saying what is fair or not fair. That's an incredibly subjective judgment and everyone has a different opinion or definition of what is "fair". The devs' definition of "fair" for this game is a 60% kill rate, for what it's worth. That's what they are aiming for with the game balance. Sorry you don't like it.
I'm telling you what happens when the average kill rate goes lower than what it's currently at (to be more "fair" in your view). The game becomes more difficult and unfun for killer players, especially against SWF teams which at higher skill levels already have a 50% or better escape rate, so killer players either switch to survivor role or they don't play at all. This isn't just my opinion - it has happened several times in the game's history.
-
By far #1 most hated - non-functional matchmaking system
Other than than, BHVR cranking out new content at a furious pace, releasing new content in a busted state, taking forever to fix bugs/balance issues and sometimes ignoring them for years, spending resources and time making changes that nobody asked for, refusing to address VPN abusers, refusing to enforce ping limits in lobbies

Everything you say is true but be prepared to be drowned out by masses of killer mains who like having the game rigged in their favor and will stop at nothing to make it even more so. (This was meant as a response to thrkeybs as well.)
If you believe that a 60% kill rate is the game being "rigged" in favor of killer players, then it's clear that you're never going to be happy with this game. What is an acceptable and fun escape rate for you? 50%? More than that? Should survivors escape a majority of the time? What do you think killer players are going to do when the game becomes much more difficult for them? Oh yeah, probably the same thing they've always done in the past when escape rates were higher, which was stop playing the killer role and survivor queue times were ridiculously long. There is a custom game mode with bot killers if you want consistently EZ wins.

Um wut? Sarcastic response? I believe I was agreeing with you?
The OP was claiming that the player count is plummeting, your post contradicts that with evidence showing that the player numbers remains consistent.
I then pointed out that October and November 2024 player numbers are about 38000-39000, while the 2023 and 2022 players numbers for October and November were about 31000-33000... this actually shows the player base is growing, not plummeting... In fact if you look at most of the months, 2024 typically has done better that the last couple of years with only a few notable exceptions...
I don't believe I stated anything sarcastic... I merely made a factual observation... I think you might have read into something that wasn't there my dude... 😶
I'm sorry, the way you worded your response sounded sarcastic and dismissive. It's tough to tell when you can't see someone's face, obviously. I apologize for my rush to assume that you were being rude in your response

Well you're winning the majority of your matches so stop complaining.
Everybody is going to have a different opinion on what the kill rates should be, so it's pointless to try to convince people one way or the other. The fact of the matter is that when kill rates were lower, killer numbers were way down as evidenced by the extremely long survivor queue times that we had. BHVR have decided that the sweet spot for balancing the number of killer players vs. survivor players in queues is a ~60% kill rate. If you don't like it, then I don't know what else to tell you other than 1) play a different game; 2) play in a SWF team where you get an unfair advantage from comms and your escape rate will increase; or 3) play a customer match against bot killers if you want to escape more frequently.
Unlike many who are complaining about the survivor experience, I actually play killer a good % of the time so I know what happens to the killer experience when the survivor side gets overly buffed. You get exactly what has actually happened at certain points in the game's history when nobody wanted to play killer. Survivor-only players often forget that there is a human being on the other side of the screen who also wants to have an enjoyable experience on a level playing field.
I know that survivor, especially solo queue, can be a miserable experience but it's not because killers are OP. It's because matchmaking is non-existent and unless you're playing in a full 4-man SWF, you're getting matched with other people on a completely random basis with no regard whatsoever for skill level. I have well over 2,000 hours in the game and literally every day I play, I will get thrown into lobbies with brand new players and it's not because of a lobby backfill. This is the real issue that needs to be dealt with, not survivor vs. killer balance. My solo queue matches with teammates who know what they are doing are usually pretty competitive and enjoyable.

The peak was July 2021 at 105K players, and I believe that was due to the Resident Evil chapter that brought in a ton of players who only wanted to play for that new content. You need to look at the long-term average and not based the popularity of the game on one-time outliers. Certain special events and new chapters always bring in a large influx of players that don't stick around. The player count is higher than Dec. 2023 and about the same as Dec. 2022. The game is doing fine.

Give Killers basekit Deerstalker. When I slug I survivor to apply pressure, I have every intention of going back to hook them eventually. But most of the time, the survivor crawls away to a hiding spot or obscure corner of the map so I can't find them. I'm not going to waste a whole bunch of time trying to find them if I can't find them right away. It's pretty irritating that survivor players complain about being bled out for 4 minutes while many of them intentionally make it difficult for the killer to find them after they've been downed. I think a good percentage of players being bled out are due to the killer not wanting to take the time to find them. Giving killers basekit Deerstalker would make it quicker/easier to find downed survivors and I think would significantly reduce slugging. If after 3-6 months the data shows that it's not effective, then revert the change and try something else. But at least it's worth a try.

possible but i dose not matter. the ping limit is set by the devs. players play within the limits set by the devs.
rizzo told me mandy is a dev (because she has a dev tag), so mandy can tell us why the ping limit is 2000ms and nothing more sane like 300ms.
The devs have never told us why they don't have ping limits, but it's not difficult to figure out. Setting ping limits means fewer people will play, which means less revenue $. It's good for BHVR's bottom line, but it comes at the expense of player experience. It's a tradeoff that BHVR are OK with because people generally aren't leaving the game due to laggy in-game experience. If enough people started leaving the game due to this issue, I think BHVR would change their stance pretty quickly.
-
Servers have been steadily melting down for a while, and it seems to only be getting worse. I have a very fast wired internet connection and this is the only game where I am getting garbage pings. It's getting to the point where I don't even want to play anymore because of the stuttering, BS hits after I'm 10 ft past a window after a vault, phantom Huntress hatchet hits, etc.

To be fair, most of the stuff we have to spend BP on will never get used :)
-
This is what happens with a 3-month cycle to crank out new content. Come hell or high water (or bugs galore), that new content is going to get released and we'll worry about fixing things later.
The best thing for the long term health of the game would be to slow down, take at least one quarter off, and just focus on bug fixes, matchmaking, game balance. No new content, no new skins, nothing except fixing things that are broken. That kind of stuff might not make money immediately but it will certainly help prevent/delay long—time players who do spend $ from leaving the game.
Taking a few months to focus on improving new player experience would be fantastic as well. This would help to bring in more revenue not with new content to sell to existing players but with attracting and retaining players.

I like the way the old Ormond map looks. Don't mess with it!

-
Matchmaking is always like this. It's not just due to the event. I have about 2,200 hours and consider myself a decent but not great survivor. I can consistently escape at least half my matches as long as I'm matched with decent teammates who aren't completely useless. But that almost never happens in solo queue. I could send you screen shots all day long of the players I get matched with who have <100 hours in the game. The matchmaking system simply does not function at all.

When your queue times are instant on killers, do you have 100% BP bonus?
Because EU servers don't have that.BP incentives have been broken for a long time now. The best I ever get now is 50%, even when survivor queues are super long. Often times there will be a 25% SURVIVOR incentive even when survivor queues are long and killer queues are instant.
-
It depends what time of day you play. I am in US eastern time zone. Killer queues are always longer during the day, but during peak evening hours killer queues are instant as this is when a lot of survivors come to play with friends. It has been this way as long as I can remember. I don't see any indication of change in number of survivor vs. killer players.
-
Servers have been trash for a long time, regardless of game mode or event. Just yesterday I was on a server where everyone had at least 130 ping. My normal ping for a nearby server (US eastern time zone) is ~30. BHVR still refuses to show pings in lobbies, so there is no way to avoid this. You are forced to play the match on a garbage server or get a DC penalty if you want to leave.
-
I still play the game regularly, so it hasn't been bad enough for me to quit yet :)
There haven't been any significant changes to help game balance. Matchmaking remains hopelessly broken and is by far the #1 reason that solo queue is often a miserable experience. Still nothing is being done to get solo queue and SWF on a more even playing field. Killers remain punching bags for good survivors teams on comms.

Yeah, something like that. Maybe BHVR implemented code to subtract 50% from the incentive to make sure it didn't compete with 2v8, and they forgot to remove that code after 2v8 ended.
Whatever they did, they completely F-ed up the whole system and who knows if/when they will fix it.

Yes, incentives are definitely broken. Just tonight I was getting survivor BP incentive when survivor queues were several minutes and killer queues were instant. This happens every single day.

The matchmaking system doesn't work. That's why you're getting matched against people far outside of your skill level.
