From some of the posts on the forums you'd think they want 120-second gens and buffs for all slowdown perks. And they would still be calling the game "incredibly survivor-sided" and "basically unplayable".
Anyway, I would take it, from both roles' perspective. It's not at all rare that slowdown perks can make for more than a total of 150 seconds of stall, but not only would this be much more consistent of course, but most slowdown perks only come into play after downing and hooking survivors or otherwise applying pressure, whereas with longer base gens, even lesser killers could more reliably have a better early game and less often lose gens for their first hook. And they would of course have those slots for chase perks and such then. Although I would probably want to see some adjustments to camping and tunnelling to go with this, since they would be even more effective with longer base gens.
I think rather than increasing the time to repair however, a good way to slow the game down would be to hide generators better (more randomized spawns, perhaps removing the headlights), as well as revisit the "early game collapse" idea, where you either block all gens for a minute (ending if a chase begins before that minute has passed), or simply have Corrupt Intervention basekit.
Another approach would be to rework slowdown perks such that they are at their strongest if a killer does not camp or tunnel. Examples would be Weasel granting 30% regression on fresh hooks, 20% on second hooks, but none on death hooks. Or yet, granting 50% regression on the gen furthest from the hook that has progress, highlighted for the killer. Pain Resonance granting 30% regression on every fresh hook, but this being reduced to 0% if a survivor is sacrificed. Ruin again regressing gens at 200% base passive rate, but also again disabling itself once a survivor is sacrificed. Grim Embrace blocking gens for 10 seconds for every gen left to repair at the point of it activating, incentivizing the killer to go for fresh hooks as early as possible. And so on. And then other perks that also encourage spreading the pressure like Thanatophobia and Barbecue could be buffed, with Thana perhaps also slowing down vaulting speeds, and Barbecue granting a continual movement speed boost for every fresh hook on a token system, losing a token whenever a survivor is hooked for the second time. There's a plethora of simple and obvious ideas to create very potent and impactful slowdown perks that however are contingent upon not camping and tunnelling.
Yeah that’s true huh? I keep thinking it over and while I do want the games to last longer I see enough people keep saying that increasing gen time is a bad idea.
I agree with many here that say that secondary objectives are needed. I like the idea that Killers come with a secondary objective.
I don’t run slowdowns so that’s probably why I feel the way I do. I just wish that some of the lower tier Killers had ways of making the matches last just a bit longer.

I’ll never get over everything I’ve learned about Silent Hill from you. I hope the franchise gets a classic collection of all the Silent Hill games. I’d love to play them.

As Survivors get better at the game, kill rates go down so some changes would need to happen to keep the targeted kr. Either Killer buffs, Survivor nerfs, or both.
It’s probably why attracting new people to the game is a good thing. It introduces inexperience into a group that slowly gets better with time. It stays the targeted kr without needing to change much about the game.
Both roles have room to improve but I’m of the belief that Survivor is the more difficult of the two roles. Because of that it becomes more noticeable when Survivors get better at the game.

I think touching gen times again is not a good idea. 90 seconds for a gen already doesn't feel great. Have you seen the impact that Thanatophobia has on some survivor players? It's not a good perk, if you can't keep all 4 people injured but just seeing that red progress bar is awful. Giving them the feeling that they progress even slower is not good. There is also the issue, that this scales massively with slowdown perks, which are already super meta.
Instead, I think survivors need a worthwile side objective. I had suggested this a few times already but I think it would be really nice, if they looked at The Game and its mechanical doors for reference. These doors open when the gens next to them are powered. It would be nice, if instead of gens, the requirements were something different (like finding a key for a locked door or whatever) and it came with the payoff to make a part of the map accessible for survivors and open up some strong loops. Likewise, there could also be spots where survivors could close and lock doors which would then work as breakable walls with a window right next to them.
This would allow for more resources on maps, which makes chases a bit more interesting especially against stronger killers but it would also reduce the pace of the game slightly. The problem is that this would take an insane amount of work and a lot of balance changes to perks as well.
In the very least it could be something cliche like gas cans for generators.

Because the theme also carries through onto the gameplay…
I don't really have the intention of making DBD into a horror title, but as I already explained you would need to find a way to have the theme carry over towards the gameplay, which makes it kind of hard in a multiplayer game… As with experience the game loses its horrors…
I would say they are frustrating, but not necessarily horrific.
Fully depends on who you face, if you face demogorgon, Unknown or some other you probably would, but then again Legion for example is probably the least of a threat, all he is is a person with a knife… Survival rates in knife fights are not good by any means, but it is not like you won't find stuff that could be used against it.
I think I kind of understand what is and isn’t horror to you but not completely. That’s okay though, we can agree to disagree. For me DBD meets the threshold of a horror game, while for you it does not. Thank you for the conversation and for being patient and civil.

I guess there are quite a lot of games that I would consider horror from Amensia a few of those games for example fungoose tends to play.
I don't consider that to be horror, otherwise most criminal minds episodes would be horror as well because such concepts are not that horrific in comparisson. If unlimited repetition is horror than so is Sysyphus' struggle to bring the stone up the mountain, as it has no ending and repeats itself until all eternity and so is eternal life as there is no end to it either, or is it not about eternity but about the pain? In which case existance is pain and therefore horror ^^
The themes would be horror, but the game is not. Like I said many times before I just don't think the gameplay is able to put a focus on the horror of the whole thing if it happens in real life… If that would happen it would fully depend on whether or not I'm a fit marathon runner or an unhealthy couch potato… If I am that fast that Trapper can never catch me then it does not really matter does it? Are you familiar with this goofy if then thing about the snail that tries to catch up to you and kills if it catches you, but it moves at the speed of a normal snail… If that thing can realistically never catch me, then where is the issue? Then there is just nothing to be scared of.
What games do you consider horror? Why is Amnesia horror to you?
How would you change DBD to make it worthy of the horror genre title in your eyes?
And yes, in many ways regular existence is horrific. In many ways it is also beautiful. I would also classify Sisyphean situations as horrific yes.
And your fitness determing your fear in a trial is very brave. I would still be terrified regardless of how fit I am.

There are some religions that have constant reincarnation and suffering during life as it is, is that horror then as well? Just because the lore around it might seem like horror, does not mean the game is, otherwise probably every piece of literature with demons and such would automatically be horror and I think that would draw the frame way too far, at some point everything would be horror just because of some implications of pain and suffering…
Besides that infernal punishment because of the trial itself? Or is there some sort of higher hell they end up in when they get sacrificed? Because otherwise unless you go rather deep into the lore and listen to the audio files and read all that stuff it never really gets through in the gameplay does it? You could argue that those things are horror elements, just like a skill tree is a rpg element, does not necessarily mean the game is a horror game…
On a side note if you think about single player games that can end by you dying and needing to restart… Do you always question what the possible afterlife what look like and then decide on that whether or not it is horror because there is or might be some otherwordly deity mentioned in the world that might claim your soul?
I'm not disagreeing on the lore certainly being horror, but the lore is not the game… The gameplay is mostly what matters and when we look at the gameplay we have a goofy game of catch, just like I said above. Because otherwise snake is also a horror game… As this poor snake is forced to endlessly eat stuff and do it over and over when it bites its own tail, seems quite like torment as well does it not? That's basically just what the gameplay loop is… Think about it from that point, is not every RPG game truly horror because you get thrown into this world where possibly around every corner there might be monstrous enemy that will crush you and there would be nothing you could do about it? With monster roaming the world and nobody being able to feel safe because not even the mighty walls of fortified cities may prevent the monsters from getting through? But does it get reflected in the gameplay? Nah not really…
From my own personal PoV, yes most of your examples are horrific. RPG games with monsters, perpetual reincarnation with suffering, yes those things are horrific to me. Any game with killing or even violence is technically horrific to me.
So okay I see that there is a struggle in defining the line of horror from your POV. I need to ask you questions to see your position better:
- Does there exist any game that YOU personally consider to be horror?
- Do you consider the violence of dbd, hooking, the concept of never ending trials horror? Or are they just horror overlays on a wireframe textureless game? Because in that case then I guess in your POV no game can be horror since it’s all just pixels and numbers and systems.
- If the Entity took you from your bedroom tonight, would your feelings change? Would you be scared to be a Survivor in the fog? Is it the medium of the game itself that isn’t horror to you, even if the concept is?
-

I don't think it is the devs fault that the game is no longer scary... As soon as you know how everything works in an online game it just stops being scary, nothing they could have done different. And while it is mostly themed I would not call it a horror game, it is a goofy game of catch.
Hi Archol, as a disclaimer I just want you to know that I feel nothing but respect in my heart as I type this comment.
The concepts of the Entity, what it does, the uncanny valley dreaminess of the trials, the never ending infernal punishment of both the Survivors and Killers to play out this dance in perpetual torment etc., these concepts are not horrific to you?
-
Sure I would take that since I don’t run any slowdowns.
Another idea I’d like to see tested is what if gen times stayed the same, but generator repair speed suffered a penalty whenever a survivor is in chase? That way the Killer can reclaim some of the chase time while the person who is good at looping still gets the thrill out of being chased a long time. If the person is a god looper then they’ll still be making time for their team, just not as much as before. It would make committing to longer chases a little bit less punishing. It would also gently encourage stealth playstyles a little more too.

I pretty much exclusively play Solo q, and I do it mainly because I really like the challenge. I believe that solo is the hardest way to the play the game, and there's something really satisfying when you win because the odds are quite literally stacked against you. It feels more fuliflling to me personally than swf or killer. Problem is the high is few and far between but it's so high that you cant stop chasing it. So I will dredge through 15-20 matches where my team and I die just to get that one successful win lol.
Do you play alot of solo q?
Oh yeah, I know that high you’re talking about.
And yes, that’s all I play actually. Solo q and Killer. -
There’s so much about Plague that I can relate with.
But more than anything… it’s the feeling I get when I play her…
I can’t quite describe in words the feeling that playing Plague gives me… Here’s a song that captures what it feels like:

Overwhelming the Survivors with sickness, Dark Devotion, mind games, hope extinguished… A romantically sadistic twirling dance all trial…

I thought this was talking about survivor players at first and I was gonna make a whole spiel about the great give-uppening we have right now, but based off the lore… I think I gotta go with Thalita and Renato.
Think about it, they were just hanging out on the beach flying kites, and they just suddenly see some big business guy get literally slaughtered by this crazy lady who's trying to be like her dad's manga character (they don't know that last bit but still). And then as they're running away, they get taken into another dimension, never to be seen by their family and friends ever again.
On top of all that, there's one more thing that's actually pretty rough that I personally consider canon, but I got it from a Youtuber so take this part with an entire rock of salt. If I recall correctly, it's implied through the lore that Thalita actually goes kinda crazy because of everything. Even after being taken by the Entity, she sees her and Renato running on the beach towards safety. So, if that's true and I'm not accidentally making that up, that means that Thalita is in a semi-conscious state of being, perceiving the trials as herself and Renato on the beach, still in their lives in their world. Along with that, think about Renato! Thalita is his rock, and if she has a crumbling sanity, his foundation may as well be gone.
There're definitely worse stories where you feel bad about the survivors (shoutout Meg and Jeff), but for me, the Lyra siblings steal it. Maybe I'm biased because I think of myself and my younger siblings, idk.
Your post gave me chills on my back

@Beaburd said:
Unlike years ago where I played killer nearly exclusively, I now play ~80-90% solo queue survivor.
As to why that is:
I'm of the belief that the weakness and challenge of solo queue is the lack of information and quality of support survivors receive. I also believe that if the information is there, and the quality of support is high, people are more likely to succeed (i.e. play well); otherwise, they (and therefore we as a group) are more likely to fail.My enjoyment in games, regardless of the genre, is controlling the pace of the events that happen around me to the best of my ability. Whether that means tanking in MMOs, playing control mages in single player games, (attempting) to push a group of oblivious people in the right direction to succeed, or even just building a civilization in… civilization - I just enjoy the challenge of navigating the broader variables around me to achieve the outcome I desire.
Survivor gives me this fix because the vast majority of players seem to prefer chase, second chance, and the occasional generator-related perks. As a result, there have been more than a few moments where people can be inefficient in their objectives. So I do my best to, and enjoy providing, the best support that I can in an attempt to enable others to play well in whatever role they want to play. If they want to be aggressive, I grind generators to prevent us getting behind; if they're being tunneled, I set up boons and body block to keep them in the game; if they're going down like flies, I lure the killer to the other side of the map (ideally with boon: exponential set up near them beforehand). It is just fun to me to take supportive tools for the team and try to fit into whatever dynamic we end up having, and however the match goes.
Since I don't take any chase or anti-tunnel perks, I am also extremely vulnerable to the killer. As a result I adopted a primarily stealth-oriented playstyle, which adds excitement in not getting caught, and if I do, how to best navigate the chase to go down as late and conveniently as possible while on the fly (i.e. away from generators, hooks, healing teammates, etc.).
All of this contributes to my enjoyment of the survivor role, and is why I prefer the role currently.
—
That said, I won't deny solo queue can be frustrating either.
I will never forget that game of Borgo a few days ago against a slugging anti-healing doctor (Deer Stalker, Coulrophobia, Unnerving, Distressing) where 3 of my survivor allies got downed in one area with 1 generator left. That area, coincidentally, had my Boon: Exponential totem up there. Naturally, I took the killer on a ride to the opposite side of the map and let them recover in there. The issue is only one person actually recovered themselves fully and the rest just let themselves bleed out. The Dwight who recovered didn't both picking them up either (he was beside them), but instead stayed in the boon, screaming, taking the doctor there who snuffed it out so I couldn't use it when I got downed (I had tenacity).
To top it off, the Dwight disconnected after he got found and his bot hid in a locker because of the terror radius, watching me bleed out literally in front of him.
But hey, sometimes you gotta accept that some games you make the right decision but it just doesn't matter because, I assume, no one else cared enough to play (which I think is a problem in the game currently).
I just enjoy the challenge of navigating the broader variables around me to achieve the outcome I desire.
Wow, extremely dynamic. It feels like DbD is an experimenter’s paradise doesn’t it? It’s one of the reasons I love Plague so much. I love controlling the tempo of the match while wearing the Survivors down by attrition.
Thanks for sharing! Your comment was fun to read.

The killer is supposed to be the power role. Escaping is supposed to be difficult. Any expectation of higher than 40% escape rate is just entitlement, IMHO. There’s a very good reason that the devs set 40% as the target escape rate. Anything above that and killers become punching bags for survivor entertainment, which is what they are against high MMR SWF coordinating on comms.
I completely agree. The target escape rate is 40%. Swfs at high mmr have on average almost 50%. That’s a 25% increase; a MASSIVE over performance of the intended escape rate. And that’s just the average escape rate for swfs at high mmr. There’s a chance that the escape rate at the highest mmr is probably even more Survivor sided smh. The entitlement hypocrisy is nauseating.

1) You can't nurture a culture of sore winners and toxicity in a game AND appeal to altruism, teamwork and respect to shame people into staying and helping those who would drag them through the mud for being less than perfect (it's not just killers. survivors do that to other survivors too). You can't have both.
2) I understand the frustration - and if it's combined with teammates lashing out at the player and previous killers BMing, the player doesn't have the incentive to continue the effort. Are they letting their team down? Maybe. But let's be honest, multiplayer games have never been about bonding and working together.

I’ve noticed how bad it’s gotten. It’s not enough to impose arbitrary limitations onto the Killer. Now Survivors have to control how other Survivors play. If that’s not entitlement I don’t know what is.

I learned that I should always, ALWAYS use Lightborn. The amount of players who love to equip 4 flashlights and try to bully you out of the game is staggering.
It’s such a great defense perk. You know the entitlement is real when they get angry you’re running it all while they’re running multiple second chance perks 😂

I feel your pain. Like I mentioned in another post, matchmaking needs to be fixed so that survivors are getting like-minded, like-skilled teammates. Until then, it's completely random and the devs won't know what to balance off of, because they'll just see survivors losing all the time, not knowing that it's bad teamwork and not the killer being too strong that's killing them. SWF definitely needs a nerf though. We shouldn't be bringing solo up to their level, because that'd make solo broken as well. SWF can just be playing with your friends, yes, but in the name of making the game balanced I think they need a gen speed slowdown, so that the teams that do play to win with it don't just annihilate all the killers they come across. "But that doesn't happen all the time." Right, because the killer isn't a low tier running meme perks, they're a mid tier or above with meta perks. And they're having to run that just to compete with SWF who are trying to win, but can really just mess around with altruism and whatever perks. When SWF is playing to win and brings good stuff, there's few killers who can beat them. They don't have to be that skilled at chase or anything, because gen speed. You used to have things like 25% Pop and multi-use Pain Res to curtail it, but with all the nerfs I'm afraid even mediocre teams can beat good killers now. The killer gets punished hardcore by not tunneling and camping, and now they pretty much can't do that. So what's left? Slugging with NOED. That's what the game is currently balanced around.

It’s really sad that it’s come to this point. The denialism is even sadder.
