My take is that SM is literally the most problematic design they've ever released and that there was little salvageable from her kit.
So yes, I'm glad everyone knows my take.
Oh my god no one cares like do you get paid to harass people for liking a killer I swear its all you do💀

Playing new Skull Merchant in a chase-oriented way would be far more skillful than old 3-gen Merchant was.
I think really she benefits more from playing like a setup killer now, not on generators but at strong loops or strategic chokepoints. Kinda like Trapper except she doesn't have to go collect her power first. I suppose a lot of it will depend on her new addons too though, the old chase addons definitely won't be a thing anymore or at least won't work the same way since active zones are gone.
I've addressed why playing her like a setup killer with the reworked version hurts her HORRIBLY and is extremely unviable.

This is a case where I really can’t tell yet if she will be good or not. The only thing that’s for certain is 3-gen Merchant is dead which is good. But even for those who played her in a chase-oriented way (myself included) she’s still going to be very different.
We do know from another thread that getting scanned does still grant the SM Haste for a few seconds, so even for injured survivors the drones are not a complete non-threat without a claw trap. But overall I think it’s far too early to assess her rework without having seen it in action.
The biggest thing that cant be denyed is she takes MUCH less skill now no matter what and has lost almost all agency when it comes to actual chase
-
@UndeddJester said:
Need to see it in action first... I said a while back that the issue is the active drone mode when deployed, its an instant area shut down.
The most appealing part to me was scout mode, the need to Metal Gear Solid your way past the drones scanner... literally stop still whenever it looks at you, which seems to be the direction gone.
Its good to see claw traps now the focus on her power, though I found tne new lock on a little surprising, was not expected to be wounded if caught 3 times by the scanner... she now seems like a stealthy trap based character, which I actually am happy to see more of this type of Killer so its not exclusive to Trapper and Hag.
It seems like it might be pretty cool actually. Survivors be Solid Snaking up to traps, Skull Merchant be Sam Fishering up to Survivors... seems like a big stealth off. Will have to see how it plays out, but cautiously optimistic 😁
The problem is the drones still go inactive and SM cant turn them back on herself meaning the survivors technically need to be caught FOUR times by the drone just for it to take affect and as is its already easy as hell to avoid being hit with her beam. Top that off it removes pretty much all agency from the killer. Now shes much less skill reliant to use in chase just throw a drone and hope the survivors are stupid enough to get hit with a beam.
-
@Quizzy said:
SM will definitely be more powerful in chases. Don't underestimate that. She could very undetectable in high tiles when deploying drones which makes it hard to see her red stain. And she is still an anti loop killer. You stay in the loop too long, you may gain lock on stacks and be injured automatically with no speed boost as pointed out.
Chase merchants will flourish with this update
As a Chase Merchant I am seriously struggling to see how she will flourish. She can no longer really use any area denial or pre plan. The biggest nerf shes got which completely makes her unable to utilize this new playstyle is SHE CANT REACTIVATE HER DRONES meaning survivors are in complete control of her power. Its extremely easy to just avoid her drones beams and any loop that has high walls will be her bane considering the beams can only go through loops which have big gaps

I'm honestly tempted to believe they are CM9i since they defend the old design XD
In all seriousness, no Killer should be able to turn their brain off, listen to music and be able to stall a game for nearly an hour against a vastly superior team.
The fact that some people don't play like that doesn't mean that the vast majority of people do play like that (hell, CM9i made it worse for a while) and that 99% of teams simply can't deal with it. The best team in the world on comms was held hostage, how the hell are SoloQ players supposed to do it?
The rework hasn't yet been truly demonstrated, I'm pretty sure some people will find another way to force lose-lose situations even with the rework. But at least Dull Merchant's days as a "chess player" are numbered.
Heres my socials since you wanna make some weird accusations

Name one killer that is/was more problematic on release. A literal baby killer managed to hold the best team in the world in a game for 52 minutes using this killer and a very easy strategic. Not even release Freddy was this bad, and release Freddy was really bad. I don't think anyone who's played this game for any length of time disagrees that SM is the actual worst thing that ever happened to DBD.
I think knight was way worse same with nemesis on launch. Not to mention that video everyone loves pointing too not only did the team win but they didn't even play properly the entire match and made a litany of mistakes including being PETRIFIED of her even coming close for whatever reason. Idk why you guys act like shes some monster in chase with no drones

Go gloat somewhere else everyone already knows your take

Chess grandmasters when dev blog drops:
I literally never 3 genned with her this completely nerfs and invalidates her chase and I already listed so many reasons why this makes her so atrociously bad but yeah keep up the hate band wagon. Also most problematic killer ever released lol just because everyone hopped on a hate band wagon doesn't mean shes the most problematic killer ever released

@Peanits said:
I would encourage you to give it a try first. There are a ton of changes in this upcoming PTB and it's nearly impossible to say how things will play out just from reading them alone.
That said, those suggestions come with their own problems. Preventing a drone's zone from coming within 5 meters of a generator sounds great on paper, but falls apart when you get into a match and realize that 90% of the map is now a no-fly zone. Generators are spread as evenly as possible throughout the map, so the number of places you'd actually be able to place a drone would be very scarce. Moreover, this doesn't make her power any more practical during a chase, so it would be an outright nerf to her.
Moving drones also does not address the issues with her power. Having them move is all well and good, but does not prevent her from placing them next to and having them patrol generators.
Okay can you give me a reason why I as a survivor, would ever go hack a drone that's inactive in the rework? SM can't reactivate it so they pose little to no actual threat, and the biggest worry I'll have is some newbie teammate might reactivate it not knowing what it does and then even in that case so what? 15 seconds of an active zone that doesn't really do anything and realistically won't be around important objectives so what threat does an inactive drone actually pose now compared to before especially with how easy it is to avoid triggering a deactivated drone? That alone is just 1 of the many already big issues I can point out
-
@Crowman said:
I don't see how anyone can make an accurate determination of Skull Merchant's power level based on the text explanation that lacks any concrete numbers.
They specified the numbers that did receive changes. Using that logic we can say the numbers which weren't specified have been unchanged

With 6 drones, I think she’ll be able to lock down several good loop spots that survivors won’t want to leave. Her drones injuring survivors in chase makes me think of a legion-esque power type. Easy to injure but needs manual downs with M1. We’ll see how it turns out in game.
Thats the problem, drones stay active for 15 seconds and she cant turn them back on anymore. This means after a drones inactive itll pretty much stay that way or she will have to walk over there and undeploy then redeploy the drone to lock the area down for 15 more seconds + Survivors have no incentive to hack or disable any drones since they no longer pose a threat of reactivation. At most the biggest threat you have as survivor is a noobie reactivating it on accident but even then who cares? Thats just 15 seconds in that area thats locked down. Current Hag poses a far greater threat when she locks an area down and she's like D tier atm due to the nerf she got

I get the frustration, but I’d wait before making a judgment call. I love her and I’m looking forward to the changes. I’ll reserve my judgments until after I’ve really tried her, but I’m hopeful.
Still nothing can really be made of this that I enjoy. Its so unbelievably rare that a drone turns on outside of me manually turning one on because the beams are already easy to avoid but now they have some really easy to avoid and crappy little lock on that affects injured survivors even less than before? How'd they even manage to do that?
-
It honestly seems insane how they managed to seemingly remove everything that made Skull Merchant fun for those of us who played her outside of gens. Trying to be positive but man there is ZERO redeeming qualities or potential for uses with this iteration of her and honestly seems like it'll just make her a brain dead mind numbingly boring killer both to VS and play as. Theres not even interaction and "No longer slowed when checking scanner" Well duh why would she need to check the scanner you already REMOVED HER ABILITY TO TRACK PEOPLE lol. I knew they'd turn her into some weird trash but I was praying they'd really hold off or at least do her rework properly...at least they added Maria to survivor so now i can switch to mainly survivor side cause they've literally butchered all of my mains in such a short duration it makes me depressive to look at killer side lol.

I did not say they were, I just stated what is more important, also borgos looks affect the gameplay in the sense of making scratchmarks harder to see and so on, so I would not count this only in the visual part but also the how it feels to play... And Borho sucks on both levels,too many safe tiles, that are easy to chain and have bigger collision than it looks like and hard tracking because of the color of the map... It is just all around a broken map.
This concept really could've ate too. A dark village night lit up by the village thats on fire with blood and gore everywhere? This setting was cool as hell! So whyd they stick us with a red and green wasteland with some ugly shack?

@Thusly_Boned said:
The new Red Forest is beautiful and immersive, but sucks to play on. I would argue new Haddonfield is the same.
Unfortunately making immersive maps often precludes them from being balanced, and vice versa.
I mean red forest sucked to play on before the rework and the problem with the rework was that they really didn't rebalance it at all they only upgraded the graphics :(

@ReikoMori said:
https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/391590/when-will-maps-feel-immersive
Lore wise it is because the Entity is recreating places from the memories of the survivors and killers, but it doesn't necessarily understand the material world in the same way they do. It twists everything it makes into a dark parody of it's original
Gameplay wise, immersion has not been a thing in this game since the end of 2017 as the gameplay routines of both survivors and killer became more defined around chasing and objective completion efficiency immersive elements got in the way. New players come in wanting to play very immersively and slowly which more experienced players view as severe detriment. So things that let you be too immersed aren't really favored over more balanced and cleaner designs. Borgo's a bad example of this take to the extreme as it's bad precisely because it's barren to a fault on top of having the worst color filter effect.
Another thing to consider is that maps need to be easily navigated for killers. It isn't entirely uncommon for the game to spawn areas where survivors can fit through a space that a killer can't. When that does happen it's a pretty bad feeling as you basically lose distance pathing around those spot in chases. Also every map has to within reason be able to accommodate the use of every killer's power so you can't really load it up with tons of static elements. Indoor maps are some of the least liked map types precisely because they end up very packed and cramped making a lot of powers much less effective by default.
It's a balancing act in a game where survivor stealth isn't really valued all that much rather than constantly getting in and out of chases.
Well its never too late to start making the new maps somewhat immersive and fun. They have what they need to do, now they just need to do it. I do level design for games and I get it can be hard but when you're a big company like BHVR I feel like they can pretty easily come up with some immersive concepts that fit DBDs theme of chase

Sure both would be nice, but gameplay is more important... After being on the map for a hundred times nobody cares about how it looks but will complain that it is terribly balanced...
Why are the two mutually exclusive? Also tbh visuals do matter a lot like I literally HATE Borgo and Dead Dawg because they're so ugly and unimmersive to play on that I just cant have fun or enjoy the experience on either

Same. People are just blinded by a hate band wagon because every content creator milked the hell out of her 3 gen since it was popular :/

Her entire kit and designed around camping a specific area and you see how much people hate that currently with Knight/SM/Sing
The difference with Hag is that she's slower than the others. Nobody honestly wants a killer whose power is designed around one area of the map. Trapper doesn't work well simply cause he HAS to go to the other areas of the map to even get his power. Hag has the downside of being slow. That's the only thing keeping those two in check if they ever do anything like that to her traps she will easily be one of the most unfair killers in the game.
Idk man I love area denial/control killers. Hag was my main before SM and now that SM is out and Hag was nerfed into the ground Im a SM main

He also said it's not fun? But you called "tunneling" toxic which is not true at all. You should play something else if you can't handle being killed in a game where your opponent is supposed to kill you.
Tunneling and camping is toxic because you can win without doing them and all it does is destroy the fun of the other party. There’s a difference between “If YoU cAnT hAnDlE bEiNg kIlLeD!1!1!1” like no use some critical thinking skills and realize the loss isn’t the problem it’s the gameplay itself.
-
@MrPenguin said:
Tunneling and camping aren't toxic as long as they remain the strongest way for a killer to play the game the same way slamming gens is not toxic.
Annoying sure, unfun sure, should be replaced with a better game design sure, but not toxic.
You're not targeting people because you want to ruin their game, you're just trying to win. As opposed to something like t-bagging which has no purpose but to be a taunt and BM and target the other player maliciously.
Unless you mean "toxic" as in unhealthy for the game design in which case yes, but that's not how most people mean it.
i mean what’s fun about being the first chased and knowing that you’re dead lol. “Loop the killer for 5 gens or sit on hook all match your choice” is pretty much what happens in dbd when you’re the first one found and If you’re not being chased you’re doing nothing but Gens I fail to see how this is fun for either side or healthy.

So you've been playing TCM, a game that is fast gaining a reputation of being exceedingly toxic because the player base for DBD is also the player base for it.
This is the game that can end in 90 seconds because the victims can literally speedrun their objectives before the family even really has a chance to start moving around and setting up.
This is the same game where currently Sissy is machine gunning victims with a poison wombo combo build that applies poison on every single hit.
The game where you can chain stun killers with doors.
Got it.
It’s unbalanced not toxic lol and a lot of its players are people also tired of dbd being toxic. So far I’ve only seen toxic people come from the dbd content creators who prioritize being toxic (also dbd players all said Sissy is F tier now she’s OP which is it y’all?)
the topic isn’t even TCM it’s dbd.

Sorry but intentionally targeting and ruining a persons playing experience Is toxic and it being efficient doesn’t change the fact it’s annoying, unfun, and toxic lol. Other games strive away from unfun and annoying experiences and make playing in a toxic way typically a disadvantage meanwhile dbd strongly encourages being as toxic on both sides as you can be lol. Doesn't you using your teleport and seeing a survivor not getting a condemned stack tell you who has a tape?
I'm not arguing one way or another, but I thought that was the point of the global condemn was to force grabbing a tape for protection, but with the risk of getting 2 stacks and the tape destroyed.... if Sadako teleports immediately after hitting you, that's 2 plus another 3/4 right out of the gate... and in 10 seconds if you don't grab another one, you're on 3.5 (half) condemn...
If she guesses your target TV then, she can port there, chase and down you, and now you're on hook with 3.5 condemn, with a need to heal after the unhook, and with the healing nerfs that takes time... while she is still porting around every 10s adding even more condemn... seems like could get pretty nutty pretty quickly...
Or am I missing something?
Thats until you factor in that those 10 seconds are unironically enough time to take a tape and put it in another TV

Depositing a tape is the only way to cleanse condemnation.
If you destroy the tape a survivor is holding, they are unable to cleanse until they pick up another one. Instead of needing to find one other TV to cleanse, they need to find two.
Holding a tape is always going to be in the survivors interest, so you can assume as Sadako that every survivor you find after the first gen is done will likely have a tape on them. That's where the slowdown comes into play, hit them and they will have to visit more TVs.
You realize they can still take another hit before having to worry about condemned right? Hell even 2 more hits if they want to, not like sadako has any real way of stopping them from shoving it in a tv the second they hear her tr

No way other than basic map awareness and human eyeballs? You can see what TVs turn off, and knowing where survivors are in a general sense is one of the big skills you learn as a killer player, not to mention that if they're nearby you can see the tape in their hands.
There's also info perks, and I thiiiink she has addons for this? Don't quote me on that, I'd have to double check.
No she has no actual way of knowing which survivors do and don't have tapes and AGAIN okay lets use your theory that she just has perfect knowledge of every single survivor whos holding a tape and their exact position.
What stops the survivor from running the second they see the heartbeat or lullaby and just putting the tape in the TV thus eliminating any and all threat the scary '2 stacks of condemned' may have? Mind you you as Sadako would have to hit them with a tape TWICE for them to need to put a tape in a tv. This does absolutely nothing to help her in the grand scheme of things yeah its ever so slightly more risky to keep a tape on your survivor but does that even matter when the benefit is you're completely safe from condemned?
She has no chase power especially now that they've nerfed her chase abilities to the ground. She can't get quick downs on injured targets she still has to sluggishly walk over there with a full terror radius so even doing hit and run is pointless on her considering how sluggish she will be post nerf as well.

I've played her plenty. I'm not the kind to take other people's opinions as facts. I never played her during the PTB, I played her on release. I wasn't part of the ones set up for the Predator hidemind disappointment. I judged her on her own merit. Her chase addons are worthless; she has a worse anti-loop than almost any killer in the game, even with her best chase addons. Beyond that, her best addons are either the gen defense ones, or the ones to create confusion amongst survivors so you get easier hits off gens. Her best playstyle is, by far, defense; more specifically gen defense. Playing her in any other way is playing an M1 killer with a half-power.
I too can slap Vigo's Journal on Blight and call it a stealth build, but that's not really doing anyone any favors.
Again, you clearly don't play her at all and thats fine but dont tell me, someone who actually does play her, how she can and can't be played because I actually do play her and have spent the time learning her and all her kit has to offer something you haven't done.

Well, what are they doing with that tape?
If they're just holding it, they're at risk of getting Condemned applied if Sadako interrupts them. That's where the killer's agency and skill expression comes in.
If they're transporting it to a TV, that is slowdown. It isn't much per tape, but it adds up, and it's passive.
Yeah you're not seeing the problem.
Sadako has NO WAY of knowing who has a tape and who doesn't. The small risk of maybe getting 2 meager stacks of condemned is nothing compared to the huge reward that is knowing you cannot be condemned by any means until she finds you to which you can run and put it in the TV next to you(You'll have plenty of time if you hold W the second her lullaby appears on screen).

Yeah? I must've forgotten about that.
That doesn't change the overall take, though. Either they get Condemned from teleportation, or they pick up tapes and you get either slowdown or the chance to apply Condemned + break the tape.
Whats the slowdown from taking a tape early? Spawn next to a tv then take a tape, work on a gen while someone else gets chased and you're set.

I'm not sure I'm following, sorry. They will be Condemned, because they're picking up tapes. One stack for picking it up, and if they aren't depositing it straight away, another two stacks for being hit, and then they have to start over.
Or, they do deposit it straight away, which is slowdown for you because they're not doing generators for that time. It may not be all that much time per tape, but it adds up if they do it multiple times.
They removed getting a stack of condemned when taking a tape in the PTB and have no intentions on bringing it back since they didn't mention they would add it back.
