There are three reliable counters to aura reading, one of which is Distortion, as I laid out.
Killers also definitely very much do not have nearly constant wall hacks either, for the record.
The hyperbole aside killers have reliable aura reading to a point where they can spend more time reading survivor auras than not. You could argue against the semantics of calling this wallhacks but for the purpose of this topic the definition applies.
The other perks (some of which I personally like) that block aura reading are saddled with heavy restrictions or activation conditions that don’t allow them to function as consistently or reliably as old Distortion. It’s disingenuous to speak as if they do.

The logic here doesn't work its an asymmetrical game, the sides can't be compared 1:1 to each other because they are not equal (aka asymmetrical)
Even if it was 1:1 for some reason lets talk about scale
Survivor perks and items countered : 5
Killer perks counted by distortion : 25, killer addons, 42
So lets tally it up, perk that counters 5 things vs perk that counters… 67 things. Thats a lotta things… for 1 perk to counter
Killers knowing where survivors are is strong but it keeps a better flowing gameplay loop and reduces the total amount of stacked slowdown in killer builds. I think the devs know this too and to keep the game entertaining and moving along they give a good mix of aura perks for whatever people would prefer to use to find survivors which on its own doesn't do anything unless you then go chase the survivor or plan to use that info later like figuring out which gen to pop. Plus having a different category of perks means that most builds will end up containing a few of them which means less slowdown. Frankly the whole idea of 'aura perk winter" is never gonna come to pass and if it did I'd expect "slowdown perk summer" that would follow to make people beg to revert it.
While it isn’t a 1:1 ratio, you must understand DBD is a PvP game regardless. There must be enticement to keep players—because they aren’t preprogrammed logarithms—interested in playing the game. Both roles have been handicapped, but one role (killer) has been handicapped with advantages while the other (survivor) is receiving more disadvantages. What do you think happens in a situation like that? Hint: People play as the role that has advantages.

That's the thing though. If you don't loop, you can't really make a mistake against most killers. No matter how good of a Freddy main you are, you will not outplay the Shift + W into pre drop pallet into window into pre drop 5 other pallets.
You can tell whether or not a survivor has WoO just by looking at their pathing and play style. That already shows how impactful this perk actually is.
I am not arguing that WoO is overpowered but unhealthy. It takes away the interactivity in the only interactive part of the game. You literally play by a manual when using this perk, which makes every chase feel the exact same.
But worse than that is the effect this perk actually has on survivors. Because it is NOT used to learn maps. Apply blindness to a survivor with WoO. They'll run around like a headless chicken. You could have a pallet blocking their path and they wouldn't notice it as long as it's not yellow!
This is a disingenuous argument that I see far too often. This perk has been in the game for literal years and survivors have out-looped you that entire time. With or without it, you’re still going to face survivors who are just better players than you—and that’s OK. Regardless, survivors get to have generally useful perks. Not every survivor perk should be “rummage through 2 chests, then cleanse 2 totems and you can see the killer’s aura for 5 seconds the next time they’re within 24 feet of you!” But only once per trial.
I believe if it wasn’t WoO (and when it isn’t WoO anymore) you’ll find another perk to complain about. You might layer it with “but it actually hurts survivors!!” Like people did with Reassurance and Distortion and DS and OtR and every other perk that’s generally useful to survivors, but you’ll find something to lament your woes against after WoO is changed.
If you’re against a perk at the very least declare your intent as a killer main. Don’t gaslight people into thinking good survivor perks hurt survivors. There is no shame in saying WoO is a good perk and you dislike it because it makes your games as killer more difficult because it helps survivors play more efficiently.

Can't have perks that show the killers aura??? Object of Obsession, Kindred, WIcked, Alert, Eyes of Belmont, Poised and the blood amber addon for keys always provide great value
So I did make a caveat at the end of that comment that “Unless said perk has a weird activation condition that borders on throwing the game.” I didn’t state this but the philosophy I’ve described applies to modern perks, not old stuff from 2-5+ years ago. Most of the perks you’ve named have low pickrates, are super old perks, aren’t efficient at killer aura reading and/or have questionable drawbacks but I’ll entertain this nevertheless:
1.) Object of Obsession also reveals the survivor’s aura. And it’s an old perk.
2.) Killer aura reading on Kindred doesn’t accomplish anything. Killers aren’t standing closer than 16 meters to survivors when they camp because they don’t want to trigger the AFC escape. They’re camping at or beyond 16 meters which interestingly enough is beyond the scope of Kindred’s killer aura reading. And it’s an old perk.
3.) Wicked - you’re in the basement, the most dangerous place on the map… healing. The drawback outweighs the potential benefit of seeing the killer’s aura for a few seconds.
4.) Alert is good but an old perk. As it does literally nothing else it’s unlikely to receive any kind of change from BHVR.
5.) Eyes of Belmont notwithstanding. Reading is fundamental. It’s also not good by itself and a wasted perk slot when paired with other aura reading perks.
6.) Poised just recently received this change because it was so bad. And it still has a very low pick rate.
7.) Isn’t this an item add-on? It’s also a super old item add-on.
It’s more difficult for BHVR to completely modify old perks (and I guess item add-ons) because of pushback. But what I referenced in the comment you quoted was the general attitude about current survivor perks. But with people complaining about old survivor perks, I suppose it can apply there too after all.

I can’t think of any other game that rewards players for having bad ping. And only when it’s one particular role at that. SMH.

I think both sides are getting too much aura reading perks + haste perks. I personally prefer chase perks when i play killer or anti heal. Just feels like lately all the new perks have something to do with haste or aura on both sides.
I don’t really find this to be true for survivors. Survivors mostly seem to get ‘side quest’ perks these days (a la Croft’s perks) or meme & questionably difficult-to-activate perks (a la Belmont’s perks). But when you consider it, survivors…
- can’t have perks that increase gen repair speed
- can’t have exhaustion perks or perks that make them faster during chase
- can’t have perks that block their auras
- can’t have perks that reveal the killer’s aura (Eyes of Belmont notwithstanding)
- can’t have perks that heal themselves
Unless said perk has a weird activation condition that borders on throwing the game. Killers don’t ever receive perks like this.

I’d be on board with this change! Being able to see the killer as you’re opening the gate would be a welcome changed. I don’t mind a new effect being added, I’m just nervous they’re going to remove the thing I already love about it which is the aura reading / faster opening speed.
There’s this prevalent strategy wherein “buffing” survivor perks involves saddling them with unnecessary drawbacks so the perk ends up nerfed (Pharmacy, Calm Spirit, etc) or literally not changing at all (We’re Gonna Live Forever, Decisive Strike, etc) even though they’re alleged to have been buffed.
In my eyes it is an enormous waste of time but I suppose it allows the devs to say, “see survivors look we did a thing, now go buy this new swimsuit cosmetic for Sable” while also not infuriating forum killer mains.
-
If you’re playing killer you could always rely on ole faithful: camp-tunnel. As survivor it may be more difficult reacclimatizing to this game after an extended period but if you have friends play SWF. That helps too.

No need to be facetious.
It doesn't need to be foolproof to be manageable. If bat form is a problem then so is Spirit, and she hasn't been changed so...
Spirit is a whole killer. Batform is just one of several tools in Dracula’s kit. The form itself isn’t problematic; the lack of cooldown paired with the form makes it difficult to combat. And u-turning in chase doesn’t work.

Bloodlust may have been created as a bandaid for infinites, but i think they stay because it reinforces the philosophy that you're not meant to ever be invincible or hold the killer for eternity you are meant to go down eventually. Bloodlust helps temper that expectation of 5 gen chases.
It stays because when the devs tried removing it (after removing the last old infinite) people complained. With the way maps are being redesigned even without bloodlust survivors cannot hold killers for 5-gen chases. I do foresee that bloodlust will be removed eventually as more maps are redesigned. BHVR seems vigilant about trying to keep things somewhat balanced. They can have killer busted maps but also killer busted mechanics.

Yeah, it sure would be a shame if the team of players were required to "checks notes" play as a team.
Check the note where the game’s tagline is “survive together… or alone.” Also check the notes where several devs (Peanits, Mandy, Patrick) have repeatedly stated that survivors can play for themselves. Survivors aren’t mandated to play as a team.

You can play against bat form exactly the same way as you play against Spirit, and if he's teleporting to a vault then you do a u-turn the same way you would against Dredge locker-hopping ir a Nurse blinking.
Looks like you’ve solved it. Now that we know making a u-turn against Spirit and Dracula completely shuts down core aspects of their chase abilities, survivors should never really lose against the phasing or batform again.
-
@Seraphor said:
There's an entire subset of survivors who are incapable of or refuse to play in a way that is intended to 'dupe' the killer, which is to say playing mindgames at loops, crouching/doubling back when Spirit phases or Dracula is in bat form, or breaking line of sight against Nurse.
These survivors only play loops in one way, then insist on greeding pallets and then pallet blinding (the most braindead use of flashlights) and complain about any killers that force them to switch up their playstyle, e.g. the three I just mentioned, as well as most 'loop denial' killers like Dredge or Artist.
This doesn’t apply to Dracula’s batform. He can outrace a survivor he’s just hit to a loop then immediately transform and hit them again. There’s no loop in the game that can stop this.
-
Remember how the devs ‘buffed’ Pharmacy? Well, they’re gonna finish the job on Quentin’s perks with Vigil (numbers drop by about 50% and can work once per hook state) and Wake Up (10% speed but will now allow you to see the killer’s aura for 3/4/5 seconds when you first interact with an exit gate).

You're thinking about post-rework Freddy, my friend.
Old Freddy never had such high kill rates, at least not as far as I know.
Which is the version I like: I like the one that you couldn’t see unless you were asleep. He was very strong but I felt that since he was technically powerless (I know he could hit you and make you fall asleep) unless you were a sleep it was kind of fair. I think making him that way again but speeding up the sleep timer would be a nice move. Make the snares and pallets base kit, give him hallucination or I guess dream images a la Doctor and Unknown, maybe the lullaby map-wide. I’m not sure how balanced this would be but it seems thematic.

Right, they’re just decreasing the amount of time you’ve gotta be in chase to restore tokens from 30 seconds to 15.
-
I can’t imagine how they’d change Demogorgon, it seems to be in a decent place. Maybe a couple of add-ons become base kit. I like Dracula but he feels overtuned to face, there’s virtually no cool downs on any of his powers and that’s a problem. Maybe he’ll just have some numbers tweaked.

Tell me they're all nerfs you'll make every survivor happy
I don’t think these killers are so bad to face. They aren’t at all common in my survivor games. But to that point Plague is slightly more frustrating than Pinhead to deal with. She shouldn’t have the fastest walking speed of any killer in the game given her insane power range. Beyond that she seems reasonably balanced. Pinhead too, although I understand both excel at destroying solo queue players, which make up the majority of survivors.

I would go to the other gate.

But it's by definition not free. You're giving up pressure on all the other survivors to get out 1 survivor. Y'all don't even understand the dynamics of how a match plays out.
It doesn’t really matter. Turning a game into a 3v1 mitigates any and all risk that would come from pressuring one survivor over four.

lets say all the killer buffs did nothing to the killrate. that means we can expect more killer buffs to change something?
I am certain any general buffs killers receive (and/or consequently nerfs survivors receive) will raise kill rates. What BHVR provides is already inaccurate as their data tosses matches where at least one DC has occurred. If 5% of matches have a survivor DC and 3% of those matches end up a 3/4K, then the killrate would technically be 3% higher than BHVR has stated. But it doesn’t really matter right now.
-
I don’t really encounter toxic survivors when I play killer regardless of how I play. But when I try to meme with survivors usually they just seem to try quickly finish the game almost like they’re afraid. I don’t really see toxic survivors or killers too much these days but I guess I’d say I seen both in roughly equal measure. I do consider hard tunneling (not so much camping) to be a toxic strategy. I see that more than survivors teabagging at exit gates but it’s not super common either.
-
There is no 1:1 ratio but the closest perk to Distortion available now is possibly Shadow Step and as you know that has several drawbacks.
I would not run Sole Survivor because it only blocks auras within a limited range after other survivors begin to fall.
I wouldn’t run OoO unless you’re keen on looping or comfortable with learning how to loop.
Alert a solid perk as it provides valuable information at a reasonable price. Beyond that… maybe Premonition? You’ll get an audio cue when you’re facing the killers direction (kind of like Small Game but with the killer). Since there’s no reliable sufficient countermeasure to blocking aura reading perks you might try perks that at least give you the jump on a killer who has seen your aura, so you can pre-run from them.
Distortion’s nerf was so awful the devs basically have to try to fix it in a hot patch but it still won’t be what it was. Eventually they’ll nerf down killer aura reading or give survivors more perks to block it, though, so hold on for a bit.
-
@CountOfTheFog said:
Wow, I can't believe how awful this feels. All my Killers are still running LP with BBQ and I thought Distortion started with 2 tokens. It only starts with one.
I don't blame any Killers, they're just doing their job but SoloQ is not worth it at all right now. Even in my Killer games someone just quits.
SoloQ was so bad, I decided to just do the Killer role for my challenges. Out of 5 Killer matches, I had 3 in which people went next, one where 3 Sable players griefed the Mikela on hook and one where the Survivors just memed around playing the 🎸.
Bardic Inspiration is currently bugged (?) so all it really does now is meme.
-
Thankfully no, it activates once per trial. It would be too oppressive if it activated after every completed gen. Paired with perks like Pentimento it could reduce repair speed by almost 50%, making gens take 180 seconds to complete again.
-

Why should you get free anti tunnel when you can just run anti tunnel perks?
Would be the same as people saying: I get blinded at least once a match so give me free lightborn or I cant find a palett so devs give me free WoO.
If tunneling is such a huge problem for you and you have tools against it then use them instead of expecting to get build in meta perks.
Same argument all the killers have with genspeed. Everyone demanding free reduction while there are like 10 perks for that.
You get free tunneling and camping and don’t need perks to access those features. No difference in survivors receiving the counter play for free tbh.

so you want to tell me, that all the changes that made the last year have changed nothing? that would be highly, highly unusual.
therefore, I am making the claim that the new data could concern the playerbase and that is why it is being held back.
I believe the kill rates we received this year came after those changes. My only source of umbrage is that the kill rates don’t factor matches with a DC and I think hatch escapes.

Bhvr lean into this by canonising a lot of these complaints in wide reaching balance changes
There aren’t ‘degenerate’ strategies for survivors to use anymore. They’ve been patched out or heavily nerfed. Even genrushing (focusing on gens over all else, which means letting teammates die on hook, not healing, etc) still comes with a lot of risk as usually at least one survivor will die from it. I guess maybe teabagging? Not sure. The rest (looping, predropping, hiding) are kind of necessary things survivors must do to avoid throwing games.

See, I am quite in support of not nerfing WoO, but someone always has to bring up this notion here, ie "killers wil only be happy once survivors start the trial on the hook". I understand that its sarcasm, but what do you expect to gain by stating something this far removed from any reality? Its not funny, its not clever, its not helping you dismanteling the others cause, so why does this exact thing creeps up ALL the time? I seriously don't understand it. But I also don't understand the stronk urge to wait fuitile for 2min at the exit gates for the off-chance that the killer wants to admire your twerking skillz.
It’s an exaggeration that survivors should begin on hooks, but it’s absolutely true that some killer mains (not all) do want survivors weaker than they currently are. It’s absolutely true that some killer mains (not all) want the killer win/kill rate at 80%+ for various reasons. It’s absolutely true that some killer mains have stated the game would be more ‘horror-like’ and ‘realistic’ if survivors only had one health state from the start of trial and no perks at all. I’m not sure if you’re ever on the DBD Reddit but that’s where the more extreme takes occur. In any case people actually do advocate for this stuff, and if you’re on the forums often you’ll occasionally see these extremist perspectives pop up. I think people are more likely to shame or attack those ideas on the forums so they don’t usually last long, or the people who present them have to pretend they’re moderate. But this doesn’t really happen on the DBD reddit so it’s much easier to find these takes there.

It’s not the best way but it’s a consistent approach the devs are taking to balancing maps. And when they change them they don’t tell us what the specific tile changes are, either. At least they didn’t for Haddonfield, Coldwind, Borgo, etc. 🤷🏼

oh, and use it in a multifloor area, so both its range and the pathing distance required to reach it go up significantly. I thought everyone agreed by now that boons limitations are significantly diminished on a good chunk of maps (not all, of course.) in the middle of an open area? yeah they're still pretty much useless. But tiles and placement can make them quite a bit more useful.
I liked the idea of boons and I have received value from Shadowstep but trying to replace Distortion with it just isn’t the move. Run Sole Survivor (not a good substitution either) or a looping build instead.
-
It certainly feels like there are less people playing survivor right now (in the event my survivor queue is taking 3 minutes and so does killer, technically, before the lobby fills up). Well I'm totally fine with finding a group to play with. Just do that all you want by anytime. :)
The challenges tho - usually they are: Unhook a survivor x times, repair x amount of gens, be chased by a killer for x amount of seconds, stun the killer in the chase x times, etc… - All those - participation in the basic gameplay\teamplay, no?
There should be no "own agenda" if you play in the team. If your fellow survivor on a hook - you shouldn't be running around like a headless chicken participating on your "own agenda".
You are ALLOWED to tho - and this is something I'm telling they shouldn't be allowed to. The developers need to make a game more team-based friendly. You wouldn't like it if your fellow survivor players would leave you on the hook\get to the second stage because they need to open the chest for the challenge, right?
You probably don't want that to happen to you, but you can't do anything about it - since it's not considered trolling and you can't report it - THIS should\must change for a better soloq experience.
Depending on the tome they could be cleanse X amount of totems, unhook a survivor who unhooked you earlier, loot X chests, escape through hatch, drop X pallets while in chase during this trial, run X perk, so on and so forth. Some challenges are more complex than just “heal survivor,” “be chased,” and “stun killer.”
And no I don’t consider a survivor performing time challenges—even if doing so throws the match—trolling or griefing. They’re legitimate objectives that the devs have put in the game.

It's not that SWF are too strong, it's that solo queue is just that bad.
The difference between them is like 2-5%…? (38% vs 40% or 38 vs 43% IIRC)
Solo queue can’t be ‘bad’ if the escape rates across all MMR ranks and even with a full SWF are so close. There’s something else at play that while yes may be more apparent in solo queue also affects SWF escape rates. And it isn’t survivor skill expression.

So if that's how it goes fine, I won't hook save, I'll just worry about myself if that's what's going to happen.
What I’ve found is that if you have not been hooked but were seemingly idle or hiding whenever another survivor was hooked, they might believe you were doing that all match—even if you were completing gens, healing, etc. if you don’t appear present during the match in a way where at least two other survivors can see that you were consistently advancing the game, you’ll probably end up griefed. But additionally some people are just possibly spiteful or cruel and will grief you anyway. No point dwelling on it. Record, report, and move to your next game.

I'm telling people that this "Survive together… Or not" - is unhealthy feature for survivor players.
They need to play as a team and should be punished for trolling when they are not being a part of a team and not working towards the objective. Ratting your teammates should be even bannable.
It should be a Team vs Solo - and if a Team playing like a lonely wolfs - they shouldn't be surprised for dying in a lot of games.
Developers should encourage a team-play to make soloq much healthier.
I’ve been telling people that if you want a team experience queue up in a SWF. The DBD discord has a whole channel for that very thing. DBD isn’t a ‘team’ game and it won’t ever be. Nor should it be. Some people like queueing as survivor and pursuing their own agenda (be that completing tome challenges, practicing looping, or something else entirely) which may not contribute toward 5 gens 2 gates so you (you as in a fellow survivor) can escape.

You don’t have to qualify anything you say. But why would you bring up an unrelated perk to a point I’ve made? That you actually seem to agree with. -
So you’ve gotta keep his pods disabled because he’s strongest when they’re up. Keep him running from gen to gen and basically hold W on him. You will not outloop him, but if you have two survivors who can juggle keeping him pressured in chase while the other two focus on gens you should be alright. He’s got great anti-loop so again you aren’t gonna beat him there.

…Sound occlusion is still massively bugged, and survivors are often completely silent when the chase music is happening. Spirit is a completely different situation, because phase mode allows her to chase survivors without the chase music, so she isn't as affected by the current sound occlusion bug.
The bug is inconsistent but it hasn’t affected my ability to find survivors in the little smoke. I’m still hearing them. Sometimes they’re silent when healing (without perks like Bite the Bullet, Iron Will, OtR, etc) but otherwise I’m still able to hear them crying—even through walls.
