  • If someone hits stage 2 on their first hook, does the hook counter update since that 12th hook is no longer possible?

Personally, as someone who actively avoids tunneling, I hook counter next to each survivor would have been more helpful. I'm pretty sure, if someone was tunneling, they would know which survivor they needed to hook.

  • Wow. A spot that the killer absolutely can not do anything about (unless you have ranged attacks.)

Y is this not a win? I think this is what makes it so hard and frustrating for us killers. It is that we expect 4ks for a win condition.

I myself am completely guilty of this. I want 4ks every game. I am hoping that with the new rank reset I can learn to play for fun and not so sweaty tryhard.

I always wondered, if killers could pip easier, say with 2ks, would we be able to play a more engaging fun style?

(Apologies for the late response, haven't been playing for a bit.) It's not a win because he only got 2 kills. It's a draw. However, it might not even be an even draw if he didn't get a lot of points in other things, which I suspect he did not, such as chase, or if he got any hooks on the others. Again, probably not. The kill he got in the EGC, might have been first hook as well. Yes he got 2 kills (draw), but in every other metric for the game, he probably lost.

  • It's an interesting concept that would make the game more interesting, as the 3 survivor/killer teachable perks are typically not that strong (with only one really being good...depending on the character.)

In a similar vein, someone had floated the idea that the killer/survivor for their specific map, would get a bonus on that map.

I feel both ideas would create more depth and playability to characters instead of them being just skins for the survivors.

  • @Mooks said:

Doesn’t this imply that even this strong Survivor setup isn’t as powerful as everyone claims?

you got a 2K while facecamping from the beginning. Which I thought was such a bad strategy?

It's still not a win. Also, it doesn't take into consideration player skill. Maybe they weren't as good of survivors as he was a killer. Or maybe they made some mistakes. In the few instances where I have had last minute switch outs against me, the teams really weren't that good. Which is why they do it at the last second.

  • You were totally in the right here. I've been in the situation before too. As a rule, I don't camp or tunnel, but protecting that 3 gen is your priority. And if they come into the area, even if it's to save the survivor. That's their issue, not yours. They should have been careful with the gens they were repairing. Yes it sucks for that one survivor, but he played most of the game. It's not like you did this with 5 gens left. The response to him should have been "well don't get hooked in a sweet 3-gen spot do to poor planning."

  • I have died so many times from trying to do a last minute hook rescue. I still try. I always run kindred, so if the killer is nearby, I'll be able to see it. If the hook is far from the exit, then the chances of me getting hooked trying to rescue is greater. If it's Deathslinger, I never wait. (I have seen survivors pulled away from the exit gate by him.)

I will wait at the exit, so if the person is struggling, they can get the max amount of struggle points. Again, I run kindred, so I can see if the killer is camping.

I know your frustrations. I have been left on the hook to die, while all 3 survivors were at the gates. 2 at one, 1 at the other and the killer chased the 1 person. The 2 could have rescued me, but they didn't. It is what it is.

Like I said, I still try late rescues, but I try to make sure it's fairly safe. During EGC killers tend to patrol/camp the area a lot more, especially if this is going to be their only hook.

  • When I finally got OoO, I ran it for a few games, once with a 3 person SWF. It was really helpful knowing where the killer was when I wanted and I never got tunneled. In the SWF, one of my friends ran it also. So even if I was in the middle of the map, she give tell me where the killer was in relation to me.

As killer, I usually ignore the person. If I happen to come across them, I'll down and hook them, but they get no more special treatment than any other survivor. Here's why: If it's solo Q, then it doesn't matter, they aren't calling out my movements to anyone, it's just a personal information perk (a very powerful one). If they are in a SWF, it's only marginally more helpful. Typically one survivor is in a chase at any one time (the exception being when the game first starts.) A SWF will communicate the killer is "on me" and everyone in his group will know anyways.

That's how I view it. I think it is overpowered, I think it should have a cool down (once you look away, you cannot use the ability for 60/50/40 seconds. I think that would be a small nerf to it.)

Well, since i keep stats again after the mori change, i can say that in my last 45 games BBQ was present in 9 games.

At least to me its far from overused. And while i know that its a small sample size, i do actually have stats of my games, and dont have to depend on me feeling its too many.

    OFF TOPIC

@sulaiman how do you keep stats? What all do you track? Just curious.

(I would have sent via private msg, but can't seem to figure out how to do that on these forums.)

  • @scottymo said:

love to see the whole data on this perk. One person said they don’t see it much. Ok. Not on this end. Usually surprised when it’s not present, that’s usually because they have more viable perk for their killer instead. I think there’s more going on here than bonus BP. If it wasn’t an effective perk I don’t think the BP would be worth the slot. Being able to have an idea where multiple survivors are outside a modest radius from a hook certainly has to offer some value. Certainly kindred is useful, the survivor comparable to bbq, except BBq also gets bonus BP...

I use BBQ on everyone of my killers that have it. I use We're Gonna Live Forever on every one of my survivors. Why? As a killer, it almost guarantees a 100% bonus to my BPs. (As survivor, it's hit or miss.) When I was ranking up my main killer, I didn't get BBQ until level 46. When I started using BBQ, my win percentage went down. Games were closer, and I wasn't as lethal. Why do I keep running it? Because of the BPs. To be fair though, typically every time I hook someone, there is at least one person who is away from a locker. But when I play survivor, as much as I know a LOT of killers run it, there are times that I'm not near a locker, or working on the gen is more important than running to a locker and hiding for a bit.

When my killer has every perk at Tier 3, then I'll stop using BBQ and go back to better perks. Right now, I'm using the BPs to power level my other killers to get their teachables.

  • For the most part, I ignore OoO. If I happen to come across them, as someone else said, I chase them normally. Depending on their toxic behavior, I would go with the tunneling/camping option. However, coordinated groups can effect a rescue. Regardless, you'll be able to get hooks/slugs in this way and might get a sacrifice as well. Also, if there are players who are clearly better skilled then you (specifically at looping), then chase them off and move on to someone else. I've done this many times. No sense wasting any more time trying to get someone who you won't be able to (or might be able to, but will basically cost you the game to get them.)

  • That killer is almost exactly like one of the first killers I ran into as a brand new player, except mine was rank 20. Same perks pretty much (he didn't have sloppy, it was a killer specific perk and it was from a 4th killer.) I was yelling at the computer that there was no way I should have been matched against someone like that.

  • @HiddenNugget said:

You can change it to mouse wheel scroll if thats easier, in the options menu.

But I agree, its really frustrating having to smash a button when you don't really need to

Huh, that's interesting.... I'll have to try that. Thanks for the tip.

  • Play Deathslinger. Today I was just about to run into the gate exit area when he hit me, hooked me for my 2nd hook and eventually I died on hook when the last survivor left. I have seen my son play Deathslinger and actually pull someone who was teabagging at that invisible barrier and sacrifice them. I never wait at the exit when playing against Deathslinger.

  • For the handful of killers I've played, I do think that has helped me tremendously when I play survivor. To be fair, a lot of the killers run the same perks and it's fairly easy to figure most of them out. There is usually one perk that requires a lot more attention to figure out or it's one that I am totally unfamiliar with.

Their powers are all different (and I don't know most of the addons for the killers), but knowing counter play for their powers really helps. However, since I run SoloQ, there is no way for me to convey that to my team mates, so I watch in frustration as my team mates have no clue what to do. At least for the few killers I do know. (Hag was the first killer I could consistently do well with and I always laugh at all the post in the forum on how OP she is. They [survivor mains] seem to think she has traps all over the map and they have to crouch the whole match. smh)

Don't really see how that is supposed to descourage tunneling. If killer is tunneling a survivor he knows exactly how many times he's been hooked. On top of that killer has to keep track of how many times he hooked each survivor anyway. So instead of giving the other side the same QOL improvement they give killer a progress bar, which is completely useless. It's an icon that does nothing and does not give you any kind of information that is useful for the current game.

Not true! While I'm still a fairly new killer, I don't keep track by name, but by character/outfit. However, recently, 2 Jakes wore identical outfits and neither had an item. They often ran together and I triple hooked one a lot sooner than I had thought. I wasn't tunneling, but he did die rather early and I did feel a tinge of guilt, but then remembered they chose to wear the same outfits. Not my fault I couldn't tell them apart. (I only got 3 stacks in BBQ by the end of the game, so I don't think I ever hooked the other Jake.)

  • @Anniehere About 5 months ago, I was where you are. I got the game because my son plays this game. He's a killer main and I thought I'd do the same. I started with Trapper. Honestly, he's good at learning basics of being a killer. There is an added benefit that someone caught in the traps will notify you where they are and for a short time, they can't move (until they free themselves.)

However, after my failed attempts at killer, I started playing survivor. That honestly helps a lot because you learn how the other side works and how they operate. One of my first games as survivor I got paired with a rank 20 killer who had all the good perks (BBQ, Nurses Calling, Pop Goes the Weasel, forget the 4th, but all of these are from different killers.) There was no way a rank 20 killer should be going against players with less than 10 hours game time, heck, I probably had less than 5 hours game time and most of that was tutorial time. The matchmaking is terrible.

Give yourself time. Learn to play survivor. Watch videos. Especially videos on how to loop, because that will be one of the biggest issues for yourself as a killer. I'm a purple rank survivor and I'm still not good at looping, but getting better.

When I was a rank 18 killer, I had a rank 10 mock me post game chat for how much I sucked and how ez it was. I responded, and said yes, he should have wiped the floor against me, because he was 8 ranks better. Told him, he wouldn't last long against a rank 2 killer either. There are a lot of toxic players. Almost every game, be it killer or survivor, I type GG in the chat. (unless the killer tunnels or face camps.) And when I play against new killers (be it new to the game or new to that specific killer) I try to be encouraging in the chat, especially if all 4 survivors got away.

Typically, my last game of the night is as a friendly killer. I try to approach the survivors, and show that I'm not a threat. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I usually get to chase them, and let them pallet stun me, flashlight blind me, and I break pallets and hit them once. Not enough to down them. Getting them to understand is difficult and sometimes doesn't work. I have had several matches were they let me hook them. Heck, had one match where 2 of the survivors let me death hook them! (that only happened once.) I find it nice to go to bed on a good game than a stressful game. And playing killer IS stressful.

Good luck. Playing killer is difficult and often painful. Build a thick skin and try not to get emotional in the game. Keeping calm helps you to think and play better.

  • That actually sounds really cool. However, they should NOT change Elodie's scream. It's hilarious. First time I heard her hooked I busted out laughing. If my killer had a "belly laugh" emote, I would do it every time I hook her.

  • As a survivor... I can tell you there are times I jump into the main bldg as I'm being chased, get downed and see, TA DA! The Basement. I cringe when that happens. Granted, I am also one of those survivors that likes to enter the basement to get the chest. So whatever.

As Killer, on a lot of maps, the basement is not in a convenient place. I like using it, but rarely get the chance. When I do though, I usually get to chase off the first survivor to attempt to rescue and then run back just as the survivor gets rescued by someone else. Hopefully a survivor without BT. Things can snowball really fast there compared to other hooks.

It is what it is. I don't see a reason to hate it. It can be a boon, but only in the right and usually rare situation.

Which perk is the one that Killers can't live without?

As I understand the term "crutch perk", it is a perk that people can't live without and tend to rely on the most. It is currently the most popular perk for killers. Don't take the term personally.

Note: If you want to talk crap about survivors, start another discussion. No whatabout-ism please...

Yes, I use BBQ; however, as I was leveling my main killer, I didn't get BBQ until he was 46. I noticed when I swapped out the perk I was using, that I actually started losing more games (or not doing quite as well.) I use it for the blood points. My addons tend to give me pretty decent location on the survivors overall.

For a lot of killers Nurses Calling is a must have. Nurse was the first killer I power leveled (did not play) to get that perk. (Can't stand playing her.) I used that perk for a long time, but as I progressed in the ranks, it provided less and less information, so I quit using it.

Pop is another one that most/a lot of killers run. I've gone back and forth on that. I personally use Overcharge because I kick gens a lot. (Maybe I'm wasting too much time doing that...shrugs.) And, even at my current purple rank, I play against purple and some reds normally, a lot of them fail that skill check and then I know where they are.

BBQ, Nurses and Pop are the 3 most common perk combinations for people not running the ruin/undying combo. At least from the streams that I've watched.

Save the Best for Last is pretty popular too, but I don't have that one yet.

  • @Mandy said:

The whole point of EGC is to end the game, it's not about applying pressure. If the gates are that much of a problem the killer is able to open them themselves and force start EGC, so I don't think anything needs to be done about 99'ing the exit gates.

There are a significant number of matches where as a survivor is at the gate I down or hook another survivor. The survivors 99% the gate and now have plenty of time to unhook. For me to leave the hooked survivor to go to the gate gives the other survivors a free rescue and I lose all pressure that I had. Yes, they have the hook timer to deal with, but with no options for "regressing" the gate (maybe if a player stops powering the gate, it loses power just as fast or half speed...) Yes there have been matches where I have opened the gates to get the survivors out, matches I had clearly lost, but they still wanted to play (love the matchmaking system! /sarcasm off)

The ECG should start as soon as the last gen is done, even if the exit gates are not powered or opened. This would motivate the survivors to leave as soon as possible instead of hiding.

For the guy being camped, it's terribly boring and not fun.

There are tons of possible ways of fixing it :

    • increase the time it takes to go P2 and P3 when the killer is near the hook
    • increase the speed of doing generators when the killer is in the near
    • makes borrow time a free power an not a perk
    • decreasing the killer's points when he is near the hook or hooking a survivor twice in a row

    etc...

Also those options could be conditioned "if there is more than 1 gen left to be done", "if you tunnel and hook the same survivor twice in a row".

Anyway, i don't care now, killer is camping and tunneling someone ? If it's me i suicide immediately, and i go next time; if it's anotehr player i go to the killer to be hooked and i suicide.

Does it ruin the game for other survivors ? yes, i don't care, killer is ruining my game so why should i care ? I'm suiciding almost 50% of my games now in red rank.

Sad to be forced to play like this but well... BHVR tolerate that killers are able to ruin someone's game, so...

It confuses me when the decision is made to ruin someone else's fun because someone ruined your fun. Running to the killer or suiciding doesn't help your team. When I am face camped, I try to stay on the hook as long as possible to give me teammates the most time possible. I always run Kindred as well, so they can see the killer standing right there and I hope they are working on gens and not trying to save me.

I also warn the people in the lobby if I've encountered campers that day (such as today, a clown and a doctor.)

As a killer, I don't camp or tunnel. I play more by survivor rules. Even if I am trying to stop an unhook attempt, I try not to hit the hooked player and I don't chase after them once they are free. If I run into 2 survivors at a gen, I tend to chase the one that hasn't been hooked, or was hooked longer ago.

I strive to maximize the fun for all players, regardless if I am playing as a survivor or killer.

yes, i wanted to talk about those reading aura perks, especially the one when the killer can sees you for 6 seconds after a fast action but i thought i would get a flame wall :D.

But yes, where is the mind game in jungle gym when a killer can see you ?

For exemple, when i loop in a jungle gym near a hooked survivor with kindred... i see the killer 100% of the time, the loop fight could last 5 minutes with only one pallet. Aura reading perks are way too strong when it's everywhere.

About red rank dropping pallets instantly, even when not injured is a good point, this occurs 90% of the time when soloQing xD.

I switched to killer main about a month ago. I've played both sides, more total time on survivor. I know I can't loop very well (I'm purple rank for both survivor and killer) and as killer, I can break some loops. If killer was easy, then why are survivor wait times so long? As killer I get a match extremely fast and especially in the evening (east coast time), those matches will typically include 2 or more red ranks because there aren't even red ranked killers.

Killer aura reading perks are OP? How about OoO? No cool down, no limit, use on demand. Or as someone pointed out Kindred which shows where you are, no cool down (until the survivor is rescued or dies) w/in a 16m area. Maps that show all gens and totems. And of course, the get out of jail free card, a key. Oh you 3 gen'd yourselves and you can't make it, oh well, 3 of us can get away anyways. (Yes, that happened to me and they planned it from the start.)

Survivors are chased by the killer roughly 25% of the time, the rest is holding down m1. The killer is non-stop actively playing. The killer is a lot harder to play than survivor. As killer, I've given people breaks, be it slugging instead of putting them on their death hook, or giving them hatch. Bad survivors is an issue. Had 2 matches with facecamping killers today. The first one, we stayed on gens. The 2nd match, survivors tried rushing the hook. Did not end well. Had another match today with a Doctor, who camped until you were in the struggle phase. Effectively removed 4 hooks.

As a killer, I love when survivors drop pallets right away, because it makes my later game MUCH easier once they are cleared out.

One issue I have is with the grabs that get reversed. I see the animation, but then they are let go. Especially because I could have given a hit instead, which probably would have landed. But my understanding is that server validation uses the connection with the best speed. So be it. Seems logical to me.

As for survivors DC'ing. It isn't because they are unhappy with the game. It's because they got caught with their pants down and now they are throwing a tantrum. Personally, for DC's, I feel full points should go to the killer. For the player that get's DC'd, they should have longer wait times. Another idea is that BHVR should add a bot to play for the survivor. Doesn't have to be good, but it would be better for both sides if this was done. (I've been told they have this on mobile.)

Matchmaking is my biggest beef. Had a game last night, the killer and I were both rank 8. The other survivors were: 2, 11 and 16. It was a good match for me, but can't say the same for the others. Had a nice talk with the killer post game.

Remember, in any match, the balance is 1 v 4. In any 1 v 1 matchup, the survivor is expected to lose. And from what I've seen, the balance is at 2 deaths, and 2 players, each on death hook, escaping. So in theory, if one player escapes with only 1 hook, that means the killer should have a 3k.

Totally agree with something having to be done for SWF/3Q. Be it a different lobby or nerfing them in some way (I tend towards a slow down effect. While you can't really measure how much help being in comms contributes, I'm sure it helps a lot.)

  • @chargernick85 said:

I don't believe they should be healed from cleansing. just cleansed of sickness. No where did I ever read or hear about a damn insta heal from her fountains. I cleansed when I had deep wounds and it only took the mend away and I was still injured so do that same thing just take sickness.

Totally agree. When I've played as a survivor against her, I won't cleanse unless others are doing it, but yeah, running to a fountain when injured & infected to get a full heal. That's crap. I'm surprised this hasn't been addressed already. A 5 second full heal is way OP.

  • You realize some killers use it to kill all the arrogant survivors who stay behind. They wait till the EGC is low enough before hooking a slugged player. The time left in the EGC is less than the effect of Blood Warden, so anyone in the game from the point of the hook is dead, it's just a matter of time now. Having it activated at the beginning of the EGC would negate that. Unless there was a way to buff it so it would remain in effect for the whole EGC... hmmm.

Wow small things like this make you immediately think of something that it would encourage. What has this game done to you? I gotta say, it's tragic.

Well I just finished a match where the Executioner just faced camp each kill. I got 2 gens completed, but I was the 3rd survivor killed. However, since I did struggle the whole time, the last one was able to find the hatch and then I let myself die.

As a killer, I do not camp or tunnel. However, as a survivor, I have encountered plenty that do. My game time is now more killer than survivor, but I would say about 1/3 of my time is still survivor and prior to November, I was a survivor main. I believe in balance in the game. I have no issues with killers being over powered, because they should be (have you never watched a horror movie?!?!?), but their are limits for the game. Face camping is a lame, usually effective, method, for a killer. But it ruins a survivors game play. I prefer games that are fun for both sides and I do not gain pleasure from ruining another gamers fun.

  • I agree with the basement hooking. Although I would be opposed to a bonus for basement sacrifices as it would encourage basement camping even more.

If I were to put it in gameplay terms:

    Karmic Justice-

You bear a sinister hatred for those who are overly ambitious on the brink of escape.

When the exit gates are powered, all Survivors standing in the exit gates suffer from the Exposed status effect, and any Survivor downed in the exit gates are unable to escape the match for 3/5/7 seconds after being downed.

"I took pause to consider my options. Do I stay, and risk my demise at the hands of the beast, or do I leave, and condemn my fellows to a horrible fate?"

I love it and my son also thinks it's an amazing perk.

Its the frequency in which players that do it DC or just flip their ######### when the killer either ignores them till the end or kills them quickly because they aren't as smart as they thought they were.

If they can't get a free win from looping a weaker killer endlessly on a strong loop they tend to be the loudest most likely to scream tunneling or camping in chat.

When they DC if you dont immediately farm and let all the survivors go you can instead get up to 3 players chewing you out because there are some very loud players that think if one of them DC's it's it's killers job to stop playing the game because it's "not fun" otherwise.

Since this is the internet it's been watered down to "its toxic". Which is far to generalizing since there are plenty of players who don't act like that, and without context it really just sounds like they're mad someone has a flash light.

    lol gotcha. thanks lol

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/216615/solution-for-toxic-players

Never read the chat unless you’re trying to rile someone else up, there will never be a “solution to toxic players” I’m toxic in game (tea bagging, flicking flashlights, etc) but never in chat

Explain to me the flashlight flicker and how it's toxic. I know survivors usually try to do it to get my attention, but to be honest, when it's been used against me, it's because I've already chased that survivor and I know they are better skilled than me and so I am ignoring them on purpose. Or the target I am currently chasing is the one I want. (Usually it's the former and not the latter.)

  • Bullying to me is when players who are significantly better than you does everything they can to keep you from scoring points.

When I was a new killer, I encountered this multiple times. Once, I had a red rank (no doubt paired with another player) when I was 16-18. While all the tactics they used are legit game play, it would be like an NBA player blocking all the shots, stealing the ball, and mocking a 5th grader playing against him.

I had a toxic group of purple and greens mock me in game chat when I was around 16. Yes, I responded pointing out the huge rank difference.

Now, those same tactics, they don't bother me as much, because I am a much better player and can counter most of it. (Red ranks are hit and miss with me, some are actually really good, others, like the 2 I played against today, I thought they were 13's or worse. Slugged each of them once instead of death hooking so they could get more points. I'm currently rank 7.)

But I do watch the lobby and see what they are carrying. I don't change my perks, because I like what I use and I'm pretty decent at it, but at least I know what I'm walking into. However, if I get 3 shiny coins as offerings again, I will DC shortly after the match starts. 3 people escaping with a key because they got 3 gen'd hard. Waste of my time and effort.

  • @Adjatha said:

It gets a little old having 3 generators finish just as you're downing your first survivor.

It feels bad looking at an obviously max-rank survivor trying to egg you into chasing them and having to say "nope, there's no way I'll be able to touch that guy. Gotta look for somebody else."

It is pretty discouraging when you're going through bloodwebs and have to dodge 75% of the perks because they're either so niche as to be useless, hilariously underpowered, laden with layers of restrictions, or freshly ruined from the latest wave of killer nerfs.

It is painful trying to play a brand new killer and having every game match you up against guys with thousands of hours of play time so you can't even figure out how to use the new power before the game's over.

The only thing that's always nice is near instant killer queues... until you remember that it's that way because there are so few people queueing as killer now. And ever new announcement is about how this or that killer is apparently too strong and is going to get some fresh new nerf because a zillion survivor players got beaten once and took up the torches and pitchforks.

Actually, that last metaphor is pretty spot on: Playing killers feels like being Frankenstein's Monster. Far more powerful than one peasant, but when the whole village takes up their torches, you're driven to the top of a burning windmill of nerfs.

I agree with everything you've said.

The fastest I've had a gen finished on me is about 15 seconds. When that popped, I wanted to throw the game right there.

Solo Q is hit or miss on if the team of survivors will work well together or not. SWFs have a huge advantage. The way I word nerf that is to give a team of 3 a 4% reduction on repairs/healing and a team of 4 an 8% (those numbers are off the top of my head and I'm sure they can be tweaked to be more meaningful.) I think a duo working together is powerful, but should not be nerfed and I do lean towards giving solo q players a 2% buff... but as I said, that's hit or miss.

  • Freddy is OP because the top 1% of Freddy players play better than the survivors he is matched against. That's why he's getting nerfed.

Of course, the survivors AREN'T the top 1%. They are random.

To me, the top 1% of any killer SHOULD be getting more kills than the average. If you can't match a killer's skill by giving him survivors that are equal, the stats are TRASH!

  • No it's not. It gives you the most basic of information. When I get a new killer, I watch youtube channels on how to play that killer. I also try to find videos on barebones perks for that killer (ie none of the teachables that high level killers have.) Then my first game is usually just trying to figure out how the power works and how best to use it. I usually don't even care about hitting or hooking a survivor in that first match.

Huntresses hatchets. Trying to figure out where the center point is or which obstacles you can throw over or through, that takes a LOT of time. I like her, but I'm not very good with the hatchets, but I've watched twitch players hit people from across the map and do it reliably.

I tried Nurse. Several times. Hate her with a passion. She is the most frustrating killer I've played. If I get a daily with her, I hit the trashcan. There have been a couple of times where I've done the trash can and get stuck with her. Not happy about those, but I get through it, usually in 2 or 3 matches.

Baby Blights or Baby Oni's... I've gone against them, controlling their rushes isn't easy. (I've never played either of them.) Had one Oni apologize after the match for being new.

All these killers are different and just reading about their perks doesn't help. Heck, most of them, you don't even use their own perks because they are garbage.

Oh and other than watching videos, there is nothing that teaches you really about looping, how to break looping, or when to just move on. That comes from watching youtube/twitch.

  • I'm a very altruistic survivor. And yes, I have died many times while trying to do an end game collapse rescue (often, that person does escape though, soooo, yea me...? shrugs.) I run SC, Kindred and BT as my standard build and I usually have a medkit. I often do gens injured, but it depends on the killer. I also am not very good at looping. That is something I am working on still. Oh and I do not have inner strength, so that's not an option. These are the reasons I run SC.

If the killer is running nurses calling, which you can usually tell pretty quickly (same with BBQ or Tinker's), then I adjust accordingly. If I'm playing against Hag, I'll heal up before I go in for the rescue. Why? Not from what I do, but SOOOOO many times, after I unhook, the idiot unhooked survivor immediately runs and sets off every trap around us.

However, I have seen many survivors constantly doing SC instead of gens as the killer slowly builds up hooks on us. There are some matches that that I feel as if I'm the only one working on gens. Heck, one match, I pop'd the first 3 gens! It is what it is. Since 99.99% of the time I'm in SoloQ, I would rather have SC than to take a chance with a random person to heal me when I need it.

I've been away from competitive gaming for several years now. I've played at the highest levels in a few games, so I'm not unfamiliar with antagonistic bantering and stuff that usually comes from young, emotionally reactive males engaged in competition. But either things have changed dramatically in the last 10 years, or DBD just has an especially toxic playerbase.

I have about 60 hours under my belt in DBD so far. I'm definitely not a seasoned player. My survivor is purple rank now, and my noob killer is rank 17. But somehow, it seems I often get paired with teams of red survivors when I'm playing killer and red killers when survivor. I've noticed this type of behavior at all ranks, but it seems especially common in the red ranks.

For example, last night, I played as spirit with no perks or add-ons vs a survivor team consisting of a rank 1, rank 2, rank 8, and rank 9. After I beat them pretty handily, the rank 1 and 2 filled the chat with insults.

    Rank 2: Nice spirit shitter

    Rank 1: dogshit

    Me: good play at end

    Rank 1: playing spirit. lmao

    Rank 2: spirit lmao

Rank 1: holy dogshit. you are a terrible player. uninstall and #########

Rank 1: do you know how easy it is to play spirit and not tunnel?

Rank 1: its really not that hard. ur just a terrible player

Me: I just started playing this game a week ago and crushed your team. I don't even have any perks or anything. I can't be that terrible. be happy with the blood points you got. Happy New Year. have a good night.

Rank 2: shut your spirit ass up. trash player. absolutely horrible.

I just left the chat after this. Perhaps I should just ignore the chat window and close the window quickly after each game in the future. I feel like most other online games don't have this chat feature, maybe for good reason? Does everyone else experience this type of stuff on a regular basis? Seems to be a pretty widespread and accepted behavior in this community. I know several major gaming companies have made anti-toxicity initiatives to try to address this behavior in other games. For other companies that haven't, I wonder the most effective way to curb this behavior.

You mentioned some companies have made anti-toxicity initiatives. What did they do? How did they deal with this issue?

  • Personally, I like the chat. I wish that people would actually hang around for a minute to talk (as I am a newer player, only a couple of months, I feel there is a lot I could learn from them.) So far the only real toxic person I ran into was a red rank survivor (I'm a purple rank survivor and killer). Often times I am the only one (regardless of role) to say "GG" in the chat. Especially as a survivor I try to say that because as killer, I almost never see that. And the one really good chat session I had was from a couple of red ranks who said I had played well, even though I didn't get a single kill (double hooked most of them though.)

The flip side, when I played Apex on console, there were a lot of times that I would get paired up with toxic team mates because I wasn't as good as them. After a particularly toxic pair, I decided to just mute team chat from then on.

If the current chat room becomes more toxic as I rank up, I'll probably just turn it off too. But for the moment, I hold out for hope, that I'll have good chat conversations. =)

  • Deep sigh. I know how you feel. Been farmed way to often and I end up yelling at the screen. I honestly wish there was a "kick" button for hooked survivors that would injure/stun the idiot trying to unhook you.

  • It honestly depends on how many survivors are left and where they are in relation to each other. If you are unlucky as a killer and 2 people are working on that last gen, one should get off it before it pops and go stand by the gate. I've done this, I've seen it done, and I've experienced it as a killer. If there is only 1 left and I've closed the hatch, I've chased down the last one before they could get it open. As a killer, it's nice when the exit gates are close together. If they are on opposite sides of the map, I just cringe and go check one, then the other and typically, by the time I've checked the 2nd one, the first one opens and they leave before I can get back to them. It all depends on the Gods of RNG and how much favor if you have with them.

  • I would consider a technical win a 3k. But as some of the other people who have commented, one of my main goals is to hook each player and I try to do it before I start on 2nd hooks. (I'm not rigid on that second part, just something that I prefer.) If the match was enjoyable, even if I didn't get any kills, but my points were in the middle and I had hooked everyone at least once, I would be happy with that. I've also noticed that killing toxic players isn't enjoyable. Yes, I want to kill them, yes I think they deserve it, but I don't find that fun.

When I get "yellows" or higher and totally dominate them, I feel bad at the end when I see their rank. I know how it is to be on your first character and get smashed by a killer who has perks from all different killers. Not fun. Had I known their levels or "color" I would have gone easier on them. Mowing down higher (13 - 20) ranked individuals isn't fun.

A match that is fun and challenging is a win in my book. (But if I get 3 or 4 kills, that's even better!)

  • My last game of the night is usually a friendly game. Most times, I get 8 to 12K BPs. The survivors will get twice that, usually. It's difficult to communicate and I've never had anyone flame me afterwards either. There have been a few times when survivors have let me hook them so they can max their altru points, but that's pretty rare. There was one match were 4 of us completed rift challenges. That was pretty cool.

I've also had matches (when I wasn't playing friendly) where there were multiple party streamers and they would try to communicate with me. In those matches, I do change how I play, specifically, I will not 3rd hook someone until I have everyone hooked twice. And if I happen to be dominating them, I will let them get some gens as well before I final hook someone. But to be honest, it's not much different than my normal gameplay. I honestly try to get everyone first hooked before I second hook anyone. Doesn't always work out that way, but that's what I try for.

  • Ghostface and Myers. The reason being is that when I was a new player, I wouldn't look around much and they would suddenly appear right next to me as I was on a gen. Scared the crap out of me every time.

  • I totally agree. Work the matchmaking! Let Killers see the colors of the ranks for the survivors. Make different lobbies based on rank ranges and give the player an option to expand by 1 or 2 ranges or take first available.

  • I wish they would add the color of the ranks to the survivors in the lobby. As a rank 8 killer, I get reds from time to time and it really sucks getting 4 of them as a swf. But I feel terrible when I get near 20's with only perks from the toon they are playing... When I go into a match, I expect it to be difficult and I play accordingly. If I knew they were less experienced survivors, I would not take them down so quickly. Having only played for a few months, I remember being a lvl 19 or 20 survivor, with my first person, and getting a killer that had perks from 4 different killers, only one of which was what he was playing. It wasn't fun and the game ended in miserable defeat and I didn't really learn anything other than thinking "I should NEVER have been assigned to this killer."

  • I just completed this challenge only to have it not register. Is there any way to temporarily block basement challenges from being selected or have a pop up say it is currently bugged? That way other people don't waste their time on them until they are fixed. Also, will we get credit for these when they are fixed?

Note: My platform is Steam/PC as well.

  • If you play in a team, you'll probably have different perks that work well with the others. In SoloQ, do what you want. This is my perk build for my main: We're Gonna Live Forever, Self-Care, Kindred, and Borrowed Time. I tend to do a lot of healing and I've been farmed too often by others in SoloQ, that unhook me, with the killer right on their heels, without Borrowed Time. In SoloQ you have no idea what the others are running or how helpful you will be.

I spectated a match, where one player had a map, and found the hatch and just hid near there while the other 2 players tried to get gens done. Eventually they both died and of course, the person that had been hiding jumped through the hatch as soon as it opened.

I've seen players open the gates and leave me on my first hook to die. (One time I did Kobe and escaped out the exit!) You play the way you want. I'm very altruistic, but I've had that bite me in the butt so many times, turning an escape into a death. Shrugs. I deal with it.

Good Luck, Have Fun and be safe in the fog!

And depending on how this theoretical blacklist system works, it could potentially handicap SWF teams that recklessly blacklist for dumb reasons as well. For example, I would assume the system would take into account the collective team's blacklists, and so this could result in a very lengthy queue time indeed if not used sparingly only for people that truly deserve being blacklisted.

Again, self-correcting. The blacklist from all 4 survivors should be considered, regardless if it's a SWF or not. You run as survivor in a SWF, 4 people, 4 blacklists. If they box themselves in by blacklisting killers who are better than them, then they will wait longer and longer. If one of your friends is toxic, this is a perfect time to tell them, to fix their behavior or they won't run in your group due to the excessive match waiting times.

As a killer, I don't see a down side to this. The toxic people I ban, I don't want to play with again. I don't care if they flashlight save or pallet stun me. I know when a player is better than me, but that doesn't make them toxic.

People who abuse the system, be it as a killer or survivor, are only hurting themselves with longer and longer queue times.

As a side note, I've had ONE game as killer (rank 8) where the red rank survivors, who were clearly better than me, at the end, said I played well. Almost every match I try to say "GG", no matter if I am killer or survivor. It's like shaking hands after a game with the opposing team. It's called being a good sport.

  • In general I would say Trapper or Hag, but only because they are usually used as "defense" killers. Setting up to protect a 3-gen.

However, my games against Legion, goes 1 of 2 ways... either he downs everyone really quickly, or I feel, he just ping pongs slashing everyone and racking up points.

Now, if the survivors get into a tough 3 gen, it can take forever. I had one playing as the Doctor. Had a lot of trouble downing a survivor and getting them hooked before Tinker's went off. It was a long game and at one point I was seriously considering letting them have it. Ended up killing 3, last one got away thru the hatch. Had a nice talk with him after the game too.
