It's called being smart.
You CANNOT balance this game around comp players. The game would be absolutely horrible for the casual player.
What you are doing is taking away the choice you had. You CHOSE to play and take this silly game competitively. So did I. Most people don't for a reason and we shouldn't force that choice on them
Historically, most games have balanced around max potential/high skill and have done just fine. The reason for this is that the cheesy exploitable stuff isn’t useable by the average player. Joe newcomer isn’t chaining together tiles, so doing something like preventing certain spawns would mostly affect tryhards.
BHVR should be balancing out survivors more, while creating far better tutorials that actually teach people how to play their game.

That's all fine and good, but you can't piss off 99% of the playerbase just because us tryhard comp players don't like to scrim against each other.
I learned. I didn’t start the game knowing what I was doing, and it took many losses to get good. I don’t think asking a playerbase to learn a game they supposedly like is some huge thing. Balancing around bad players is a slap in the face to people who have played and supported BHVRs game.

That's not the case I'm afraid - the high mmr bracket is one of the smallest percentage groups. Majority of players are in the average MMR bracket.
This forum isn’t the majority of the playerbase. People who post on here, generally, care more about the game than the average dbd player.

You can use the tail at every loop in the game. Maybe you can't use it all points of that loop, but if there is a window or a pallet that's always enough of a clearance for you to hit people at. A lot of the dirtiest hits I get are winding the tail just as I am coming around the corner to a pallet, hitting the tiniest of survivor pixels as they continue to greed the loop. Because of the oval shaped survivor hitboxes you can still get huntress-esque hits with the tail, damaging survivors who are essentially entirely out of your view around a corner. It will take a fair amount of practice until you start getting those hits reliably though.
If there is an entire lobby of evenly matched players and the killer is on a balanced character it's supposed to end in a 2k. If you are getting 3ks or above the MMR is supposed to rise until you are getting 2ks again. A lot of people seem to forget that part. A player is only a "weak link" relative to the killers skill level. So if there are no "weak links" (to you) and you are getting 2k's that means the game is working perfectly as intended
So to clarify, the killer shouldn’t have a chance at a 4k, even if they are as good as the survivors?

No killer really is not in the worst state ever.
Yes some of the more threatening elements of playing killer have been toned down which overall makes the game a lil less exciting to play. (I miss old moris for instance).
But killer is stronger then they've probably ever been. There is a distinct skew in game outcome that favors killer overall (this is a good thing).
"Killers were stronger back in 2018. Like yea, the weakest killers were all weaker than they are now, but there was actual power killers like Nurse and Spirit. Now every killer feels gimped, is loaded with cooldowns, and has mostly worthless addons. Modern dbd brought killers closer together, but weaker as a whole." Now this is almost a good point. Its not the overall strength of killers that has been lost but moreso the variation in game play.
The game seems to be gravitating toward a generally fixed style of play. So in an effort to "standardize" the game experience we lose some of the unique elements of some killers. It was those elements that made some killers more interesting to play. The guessing game surrounding old spirit for example, basement trapper or Bubba again.
So if your gripe is that we are moving toward a more consistent and hence bland standard of gameplay I'm all ears, but if you package that as "killers are too weak" then I'm afraid your off the mark.
I don’t think the game is headed toward balance though. It’s continually shifting towards survivors. Part of the problem is that base mechanics and maps, not perks, makes survivors too strong, and BHVR has done very little to help. The basic math of tile density, pallets, and time wasted after the killer gets a hit encourages killer to play defensively rather than for chases (the fun part of the game.)
The point I’m making is that in the first few years I was playing, there were ways to slow the game down enough to go for more chases rather than picking an area of the map to defend. Now even with perfect chases, you don’t have enough time to try to win the game. It’s boring.

Why shouldn't escaping be difficult to acheive?
Survivors have an all-or-nothing goal, while for killers its modular. If a 4K (max score for killer) should be difficult and occur less than 50% of the time, then surely managing to escape (max score for survivor) should be more difficult than 50% as well.
Yes it’s almost as if this supposed to be….a horror game.

What a surprise, the stats are unusable because they show something that you don't like.
They aren’t unusable, and they go with what I’ve been saying. Kill rates are inflated because the playerbase doesn’t know how to maximize game mechanics. What doesn’t matter in the hands of an average player can be broken in the hands of an experienced player (old dead hard, DS.) That’s why you balance around people who maximize/exploit game mechanics. Conveniently, BHVR only balances killer thet way, which is why Nurse has been nerfed 50 times, and countless other killers have been needlessly nerfed. If they balanced both sides around casual or competitive play, I wouldn’t have a problem.

Those stats literally just came out. He was referencing stats from around the time of 6.1. Anyways, the current stats don’t mean much. The ceiling for high mmr is fairly low. I would bet most of the people on this forum are in it.

Pretty sure OP has stated before he’s a comp (or was?) DBD player. I asked for proof but he never provided anything. Just FYI.
I was a professional fighting game player. Placed at the EVO world championships twice. Look up my tag if you don’t believe me. The idea that a game should be balanced around mediocre players was laughable back when I was competing.

Balancing the game around everyone except the majority of players is a bad idea. There are plenty of changes that could be made that would impact higher skilled players without kicking in the teeth of everyone else, but BHVR is only capable of doing blanket nerfs which barely impact those needing a nerf and screw over everybody else in the process.
If the game is only playable for survivors with absurdly high levels of experience then the game begins to die. Then there's no game for anyone.
So basically, experienced players don’t matter.

Don't care to learn? Most players don't have thousands of hours to devote to one game. It's great that you have that much free time to spare but that's an unrealistic expectation of most players. Maybe the game should do a better job of teaching players instead of expecting them to grind their face against the wall for an absurdly long time.
Saying that certain players (the majority of players) "don't care to learn" is disingenuous.
I have a career and was able to do it. I agree that the game should do a much better job with tutorials, but it still shouldn’t be balanced around clueless players. If you’re going to be casual, you should expect to lose more than people who put in the time. This used to be common sense, but this entitled playerbase has shifted the standard.

Unfortunately the time requirements for being a competent player in this game is absurd. Nobody should have to commit hundreds, let alone thousands of hours to a game to be competent. Unfortunately that's just how this game turned out, meaning that the majority of the playerbase is not competent enough to be described as "good".
So should competent players should suffer because certain players don’t care to learn?

I agree with that but what you said before sounded a lot like you made some mistakes. Reflect on your own games for a bit. Do you really play flawless? Or are you, like the rest of us, just a normal player, who will make some mistakes? It's easy to say one is high MMR and plays as good as tournament winners, but in most cases this is simply wrong.
The chances that you are such a player are rather low, which isn't something to be ashamed of. It's just the truth. Not everyone can be a tournament winning basement dweller.
Nah I’m a former competitive player. I am also a DBD veteran so I know the game well. Obviously I make mistakes, and I can live with losing because I got outplayed. What I can’t accept is essentially never having a shot because of bad design. So many matches as Deathslinger, I simply never have a chance to make a shot. I hit the majority of shots I take, but most survivors at my MMR prerun/use structures that I can’t shoot over. I essentially don’t get to play the game. These scenarios are far too common at high MMR, and it seems like the devs could not care any less.
It’s also incredibly frustrating to see survivors insult killers, dictate balance to the devs, and spam “skill issue” when survivor gameplay is significantly lower skill than the killer role.

what amount of gens do you expect to be at when you win? You sound like your expecting to win at 5 gens every game.
I would say killer is an ok spot if they use meta perks. one of the main issues with killer at the moment is low perk variety. there is not exactly a lot of perk combinations for killer that lead to good results. I am not saying that survivor perks are all perfect and what not but there is more perk variety on survivor end than there is on killer end. that is my take on killer playing killer in 2024.
I referenced the gen number because, in my opinion, if I am dominating them in chase, then the game shouldn’t be close. This is also assuming I play perfectly, as killer doesn’t have the ridiculous number of second chances that survivors have.

Nurse is still the strongest entity in the game by a mile. Blight isn't too far behind her, as demonstrated by the 2000 game Blight streak. Spirit, Xeno, Wesker, Chucky, Artist, Plague etc etc are all extremely strong Killers.
There's no more 5-blink or OmegaBlink Nurse, nor Prayer Bead Spirit and if that's what you're missing, frankly, too damn bad.
The changes listed dropped Escape Rates to under 40%. Sorry that you're rusty, but your assertions that Survivors are somehow more OP now is wrong. Redonsider your point of view.
Also, unless you’re referencing stats i don’t know about, the 40% thing is disingenuous. 60% killrates were possible because of the eruptuon/overcharge meta, not because of the worthless .1% changes made to killer basekit.

FoV should've been standard, on that we agree, along with colorblind settings.
Less Survivor speed boost on hit.
Faster pallet break.
Two stacks of STBFL basekit.
Increase to gen times across the board.
No more gen tapping.
That's not even mentioning perk buffs and nerfs or Killer buffs. Like, self-healing is a shadow of what it once was. There's multiple extremely strong gen regression perks. A multitude of extremely strong Killers.
Killers were stronger back in 2018. Like yea, the weakest killers were all weaker than they are now, but there was actual power killers like Nurse and Spirit. Hmmmm, no.
5 second DS into old DH is, in fact, MUCH better than basekit BT and a 7% speed boost for a short time. I'm not even mentioning OTR because it doesn't do ######### when the Killer tunnels or proxy's.
I enjoy that you ignore every basekit Killer buff, not to mention individual changes.
Honestly? I think you're rusty. Killer is easier than it's ever been, barring Eruption brainrot meta.
What basekit buffs? FOV I guess (although I think that should have been in day 1). But if you’re referencing the wipe animation or speed boost, there’s nothing else to say. Those changes did nothing and 9/10 a survivor is still making a tile.

@Rulebreaker said:
We've been here since 2017 and while we individually dont have more than 5k hours we'd like to say no.
- We like that self heals aren't super quick
- We like infinite loops are gone
- we like no more instant up medkits
- We like no instant repair BNP
- We like the variety of killers and perks to chew up survivors
- We like the small things like quicker wiping animations and kick regression and now lack of gen tapping
- We like gens take longer (yes longer)
That bullet list above is things that make playing killer alot better than before so saying its in it's worst state seems false.
Most of what you said isn’t even true. There is no perk variety because you have to run gen regression and/or information perks. There is no deviating if you want to win. Killer wipe speed is a laughable change that had no impact.

Basekit borrowed time, off the record, and the off hook speed boost is every bit as powerful as old DS and deadhard. I would rather deal with that old BS instead of this garbage because, again, killer had stuff that was really powerful.

See that’s something we can agree on. The game was more fun IMO pre 6.1, but if you’re going to talk about balance, especially that killer is “in its worst state”, you’re just objectively wrong, I’m sorry. You’re equating fun and balance together when that’s just not how it works. The game was more fun because there was a bunch of broken mechanics, not because it was more balanced.
You see, fun is a part of balance though. Even a killer who isn’t high on the tier list should feel strong and impactful. The modern killer balancing revolves around adding lousy, clunky cooldowns, and a power that is controlled by survivors. Take my main deathslinger. Even at his best he was never one of the best killers. Yet his power was fun and felt fluid. Now he feels clunky and cumbersome to play, in addition to the weaknesses he always had. The killer role doesn’t feel fun anymore.

I was there pre 6.1. It was more fun. Especially considering that the devs took back all of the meaningful killer buffs in that patch.

I have a hard time believing that a killer with that experience level is struggling in pubs. Xenomorph notwithstanding, we're talking about maybe 30% of the killer roster where chained safe tiles are consistently problematic. I know everyone is suddenly a Burger King Myers main when the topic comes up, but what killers are genuinely struggling with maps and tile safety across the board from S to B- tier?
Before I name any killers, I’ll just say that your guestimate of 30% of the roster struggling with tiles is an indictment of this game’s balance. There’s no way the devs can look at that fact and think it’s ok.
Off the top of my head: trapper, legion, huntress (on most maps), deathslinger, trickster, Billy (depending on map), pig, michael, ghostface, and Clown all get dominated by a ton of tiles.

The issues you’re talking about are not even in the same stratosphere as they used to be. And your points about Xeno are exactly what you condemned about “lazy and entitled”.
Yes, survivors have counterplay to bringing her out of her crawl stance, but, there is counterplay if you literally just read her power description.
Xenos tail requiring pinpoint precision? Simply untrue, the only ranged power in the game that requires pinpoint precision is Deathslinger and maybe Trickster. Her tail hitbox is actually massive compared to the visual model, you would know this if you actually tried to use her for more than one game before coming on the forums and complaining.
Sound familiar?
Deathslinger is much easier to hit with. He is my second main. I was getting survivor teams that would set up multiple turrets around the gens that were close together, and xeno can only hit one at a time. Not to mention turrets at loops, which I am forced to break mid chase, giving the survivors time to make the next safe tile. A killer power should never be in the survivors’ hands like that.
And no, none of the issues I originally mentioned have been addressed in a meaningful way. The killer wiping the weapon 2% percent faster isn’t at all impactful because the pallets are too densely put together.

Xeno has the same problem as slinger: you slow down when pressing m2, so the survivor rounds the corner by the time the attack comes out. You have to be pretty much on top of them to even have a chance.
I played some Nurse after getting frustrated with Xeno and did well, but saw the same issues. I was getting insanely fast downs, but gens were still knocked out. The game should’t be trying to force an outcome. If the game is trying to force a result, what reason do I have to play? It shouldn’t be coming down to 1 or 0 gens left if I am outplaying them.

Also weren’t you commenting on a thread yesterday about how people that play this game are lazy and entitled and just come onto the forums to complain to nerf things before they even try to learn them?
Because you’re literally doing exactly that. You’re being a huge hypocrite.
The issues I’m talking about have been around since I started playing. There is no learning or adapting to connected, safe tiles, second chance perks, and generally bad map design. DBD has core issues that, rather than being addressed, have been made worse. If you are the best chaser in the world, it will still take too long to down survivors before gens get done since they get a speed boost and have a thick concentration of pallets and tiles.
-
@Crowman said:
Killer has seen plenty of improvements that for the most part they are in a better spot than before, but I think the actual issue is getting overlooked.
There's a lot of pressure on killers to have to play absolutely perfectly or they just fall behind and killers don't have access to really any catchup tools to help. The best in situations where you make a mistake early and are now down to 3 gens left is to either hope it's a strong 3-gen you can defend or hope you can secure 1 kill in EGC.
Against soloq survivors this may not come up as matchmaking with solos is often very mixed.
Doesn't help that survivors have been seeing many basekit features being added to them over the years meanwhile killers are just now getting FoV slider.
Killer is easier, but it's also way more frustrating.
Exactly. Killer has to play absolutely perfect, but survivors are gifted 3rd, 4th, and 5th chances because of perks and basekit buffs. It should be the other way around to the side with fewer players.
-
@Xernoton said:
Killers are in a pretty good spot right now. Sure, some are a bit weaker than they should be but most are good. More than good, honestly. If you play a killer for the first time and it goes badly that is not balancing issue. With 5k hours you should know that. Xenomorph is a very strong killer but also pretty hard because the tail attack is a bit confusing and you need to play around turrets. But if you can do that then Xeno becomes a pretty scarry beast.
It sounds to me like you are playing against survivors that simply you by now because your MMR is a tad higher than it should be. Playing killer has never been easy (DBD is a pretty hard game after all) but it has become a lot more fair and even forgiving. You can afford to make some mistakes as long as the survivors make some as well. If they play flawlessly however, then it's only natural that you'll have a pretty hard time.
It's true that most maps have more resources than necessary against the average M1 killer but there are also killers in this game that aren't Freddy, Trapper or Myers and can't be delayed that easy. So it's fair against some killers and unfair against others. For the most part it is somewhat alright though. In most games you don't need to play then entire map. You don't win by defending all gens. You only need to have 3 left to win and the survivors don't dictate which ones these will be (at least not entirely). If there is a gen in a far corner, then screw that. You don't need to go there. Nobody is forcing you.
The only thing that is unfortunate is how fast paced the game has become. For both sides. As a killer, a single long chase can lose you the game, so you often need to let that survivor go and find someone else and in many cases it feels like you absolutely can't keep up with the gen speed, which can make you lose your cool and make more mistakes than you usually would. Many compensate for this by tunneling (even when it's not necessary), which only makes them win games they shouldn't, raises their MMR and then puts them against even stronger opponents. So the problem only gets worse.
https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3649169#Comment_3649169
It's actually the best state of game for killers right now.
Agreed. Although I would like to clarify that this is not the strongest but the healthiest spot the killer role has been in so far. 6.1.0 regression was so nutty, that I'd consider this the strongest killers have ever been.
I’ll say what I said again: killer shouldn’t just be screwed if the survivors don’t make mistakes.
-
@Hensen2100 said:
Pretty hot take imo. Xeno is ridiculously strong, although yes it is very punishing to miss the tail and turrets can be annoying.
But once you have played him a bit and know when to pre-wind the tail up to hit people at loops it's so disgusting and feels downright unfair at times, and then combined with high mobility turrets really do need to exist to keep Xeno in check.
Then for all the survivor sided stuff, it's really not. Maybe if you are in a 3-4 man SWF with meta perks but for your average game it's usually overwhelming killer sided and only takes 1 potato to cascade the entire team into failure
Read it again. More often than not, I didn’t even have the chance to use the tail because the loop is too high. Your last paragraph isn’t a valid talking point. Being able to win the match shouldn’t be contingent on “do they have a potato?” Having to rely on there being a weak link for the killer to win is bad game design.

- The majority of the playerbase don't check patch notes.
- Sadako has changed multiple, multiple times and so has her counterplay.
- There's 30+ killers all with unique counterplays (for the most part).
- Sadako is a rare killer to see in comparison to the rest of the cast.
Lazy and entitled is a really weird way to describe a problem that has almost nothing to do with that. There is so much information for new players to learn in this game. Maps, killer powers, killer counterplay, perks, strategies, etc.
It literally takes roughly 1000-2000 hours to actually learn this game, and you'd call that lazy and entitled? You have a skewed perspective.
It does not take 1000 hours to learn dbd. The gameplay is linear, with the only unique gameplay being certain killer powers. It took me 500 max, and I’m a slow learner. And I stand by what I said. People are far more willing to cry on the forum than to actually learn how to play against something that’s different. Unfortunately, BHVR usually listens to them.

It makes playing Killer a thankless job more than a fun game. Sometimes, I feel like the Survivors I play against see Killers as NPCs that exist for their fun instead of a human being trying to have fun & win, same as them.
That’s exactly the case, and correlates with the delusional people in this thread saying that killer is easy.

Do that as Trapper and i will believe you are that good. It's easy to talk when doing that with op killer.
The best players use the best characters. This is true in literally every game. Trapper straight up can’t catch good survivors in enough time. Like, playing a low tier killer isn’t a flex as much as it is a handicap. The “winstreaks” you speak of are only possible because of lousy pub survivor play.

Thank you for agree'ing with me on that, yeah Nurse is indeed very op killer and she should be reworked.
I guess you didn’t read. I win most of my matches because the survivors are bad, not because she is too strong.

Why would i? She is not my main
But you can check those competitive Nurse mains if you are looking for evidence.
It’s so easy, so it should be no problem for you. I am one of those 1% Nurse players. I consistently dominate because most players are bad at the game, not because she is too good.

And mediocre survivors are not escaping against good killers. But looks like you are fine with mediocre killers are destroying good teams. Nice logic.
And no, game is pretty much killerside atm, it's just some killers are believing they are so good but in reality, they are not.
Who said top level killers have no chance agaisnt top level survivors? People are doing winstreaks with weak killers like Clown, Sadako etc.
And it's not only 1% of Nurses are dominating. Any good Nurse can win most of games. That's because she has zero counter in chase.
So please stop complaining when most of stats are favoring killers. Just say it you want easy games and dominate all matches. Even against teams like Eternal, which without doubt so much better than you, me and most of killers. You just want to win every game.
I’d love to see you play Nurse against competent survivors.

Tournament level players are pretty much minority of playerbase.
So you should able to win most matches with most killers.
Are you suggesting to balance game around 1-5% playerbase?
I’m suggesting the better players should win. Mediocre survivors shouldn’t be escaping against good killers, which is unfortunately how this game is being balanced. Your logic is BS, because you’re essentially saying that it’s ok for top level killers to have no chance against top level survivors. Yet, you’re the same person that thinks Nurse needs to be nerfed into oblivion because 1% of Nurse players dominate.

Remember, if killers have anything at all that gives them any sort of edge, it's bad and "unhealthy" and "not interactive" and it needs to be nerfed to the ground. The original cooldown on the tail was fine, but survivors didn't like it because it meant that they had to actually play carefully, so now here we are. Of course xeno needs a buff, most killers do, but they're not going to get one.
Meanwhile, 30 uncounterable pallets on The Game is perfect healthy and balanced.

I mean if someone is bad at game, no buff will make them good. Most killers have good kill rates. So i doubt most killers are weak, it's just some players are not good at game.
There’s a reason tournaments are Nurse and Blight. It is literally impossible to be successful against good groups with most killers.

I don't really want to lose a hundred games in a row to learn Billy.
I haven't gone back to learn any of the old Killers I didn't play because of MMR and the lack of a decent learning environment.
It really sucks because Billy seems fun but I literally can't learn ######### in 5 minute matches.
Just seems like BHVR's matchmaker encourages you to never diversify your character roster.
What are you talking about? The game is the most balanced it has ever been. In fact, survivor needs buffs.

Thank you for proving killers at high MMR is over performing.
I mean, for a killer mind gamed themselves at shack to the point hooked survivor can self unhook can win 90% of the game.
That’s my point: the bar for high MMR is low. The actual good players are lumped in with a larger pool of bad players. Because bad survivors get mixed into my matches, I have a high win rate. If the MMR range was tightened up I would not win often.

Are you a good killer?
Yea. I win well over 90% of my games. I’m not saying I’m special btw: I took my lumps learning the game and have learned through experience. Anyone can get to a high level if they learn and practice. The problem is that very few people here are open to learning and would rather demand nerfs than adapt.

So killers should just inevitably lose against decent players? Just so average to low skill survivors can win against good killers?
Yes that’s exactly the mentality of the survivor mains on this forum.

They probably didn’t intentionally lie. It’s more likely that they’re just extremely bad at the game and don’t understand it at all.
This has been true for the life of the game. Most devs aren’t good at their own game, so that’s not a big deal. The problem is that these devs think they know better than people who play, which is how we get disasters like Skull Merchant.

A majority of the players who claim causal are liars. I run into waaay to many coordinated teams than I should for casuals to be the majority. Its not adding up, I believe most of them of liars. What's funny is, its mostly Survivors who claim this.
If you only play casual, why do yall care about things that affect win rates and not just quality of life changes? I cant wrap my head around it.
The only conclusion I can come to is that most of yall are liars and want to win just as bad, so you push this fake ass mostly casual narrative, which causes killers who play serious, to take a nerf to their start or kit. Survivors get the best of both worlds meanwhile, they get the benefit of solo queue changes, and choose to be a swf at anytime without killer knowing until we're in the trial.
You nailed it. If these “casuals” were actually casual, they wouldn’t care about balance or be on these forums. It’s an absolute lie that people here have accepted without a second thought.

So STBFL is now an awful perk. Pretty good job so far
