The game will die without new content idk what you want, a dead game or new content and bug fixes? Just cause they add games doesn't mean they dont also shovel bug fixes in as well.

The game will also die if it can't retain new players.

  • I enjoy the Legion's raw speed and intensity. The frantic, frenzied nature of their gameplay fits the time-conscious nature of killer gameplay well, thematically. I also enjoy anything that gives me improved tracking and Feral Frenzy does not disappoint in that regard. I've successfully ganked people who were hiding and healing in the basement that I never would have seen if not for that power.

They're one of my baby killers that I don't play much but would like to play more. I'd probably do like a Pop/Sloppy/Nurse's/BBQ build on him or something? I can see how it would suck to play them at high ranks but they just seem like pure, simple, high octane fun to me.

  • @tortrader said:

Sloppy Butcher to add healing time. Even if you one hit and move onto another target then you can take the first guy off gen work or hook rescues.

I like both Whispers and Discordance for tracking. Get to players as fast as you can. Most games Discordance is useful because of SWFs or ppl starting together.

BBQ for points is good, and in bigger maps it's extra player tracking when you hook someone.

Decent and cheap add ons are those that give you an extra bottle and which can give survs exhausted status when you hit them with the gas. That takes some of their perks offline for awhile. Using throws to hit players directly can be a waste of time. When chasing if you get to a point where the player has two paths to choose from, throw the tonic where you *don't* want the player to run and hit him when he goes the other way to avoid it, ie. cut down loop time. Make them make bad pathing choices.

I tend to play him without Ruin, but might swap it in for Sloppy. You basically can't defend the totem though, so it's risky. Only good if you're secure in needing Ruin only up long enough to get that first hook and to get the action rolling. Another option for the Sloppy slot is Make Your Choice if you feel you can run back to hook areas fast enough to capitalize on the effect. You have to use your Whispers and be good at spotting faint scratch marks or player movement in the distance to shave off chase time and hit the Exposed before the minute is up. I don't use this on the Clown but for some of my weaker killers I use Monitor and Abuse to get the jump on the survivors.

For me doing well is getting my four BBQ stacks, and not necessarily the 4K. It takes a lot of scrambling all game long and zero stealth to get somewhere with him. Lots of pressure and not a lot of reward, but with this play style everyone is usually engaged and not simply gen rushing.

This guy gave a lot of good advice for starting.

I would add to it one small but crucial detail: Clown slows down while throwing bottles and reloading them, but not while aiming them. Don't feel like you need to instantly flick them at survivors. Wait for the right moment, try to be sure that you have a shot, then let it go.

Unlike a lot of newer killers, Clown has no secondary powers. His bottles are all he's got and reloading them in mid-chase is a major pain. You don't need to impress anyone with your aim (though he can pull off some cool tricks with practice), don't be afraid to get up close and bean the little squishes right in the head or chest. Though, starting off, you're probably best off aiming at their feet.

  • I don't play this game for the grind. I play this game despite the grind. I don't mind there being some grind, but the grind we have now is counterproductive. It's sprawling and nonsensical. I don't mind working for BP and spending them, or even dealing with the bloodweb's RNG, but the teachable perk system is one of the most absurd things I've ever seen in a game.

  • Survivor: My style is to wander around lost a bit, explode a generator within five seconds of touching it, then run away screaming until I die shortly after.

Killer: I'm here to make BP and kill people, in that order. I won't tunnel or camp, but if you're the loud, slow, clumsy guy in the group, you're probably going to die first. Whoever I catch while on patrol goes on the hook. I'll give a warning slug once. Generally I try to focus on technique and awareness over pure viciousness, but if I'm having a bad day I might get on Leatherface and crank up the murder dial to max.

I don’t play clown too much but when I do I swear everyone turns into Claudette and gens just repair themselves in 2 seconds. Is it the clown curse or something?

Let's put it this way: he has the lethality of Wraith and the mobility of Myers.

Clown can be powerful in the right situation, but he's utterly dependent on the survivors playing his game.

And as Ulven pointed out, the buff to medium vaults really hurt him.

Rushing the objective as Killer leads to a Pip and to many bloodpoints.

Rushing the objective as Survivor leads to a depip and to nearly no bloodpoints.

Playing like an Egoist/Psychopath as killer leads to as many bloodpoints and pip-points as playing fair.

Playing like an Egoist as survivor is situational and depends on the killers playstyle same as Altruism.

    Not quite fair...

    I'm not sure I follow.

If I drop everyone in the first 5 minutes of a match and most of them die on their first hook, I'll be lucky to get a safety pip at best.

  • Or the torturous grind.

This game has a lot of ways to turn off new players, I'm not even remotely surprised to hear that it has trouble retaining them. I love this game with all my heart, but I can't recommend it to friends.

  • Favorite: Leatherface. Feel the squeal!

Least Favorite: Myers, solely for the sound he makes when hit by the pallet. He shouldn't make any sound.

I've been running into Abit of a loop on my Freddy with puddings and BPS. I'll use one, and between that and BBQ, get about 90k per game WITHOUT an event... With those points, I typically find another streamer or pudding. Since the event is only gonna be giving me another 30k or so... I don't sweat it.

I'm not sure I have any stock of those... Doc's my most advanced killer, I'll go rooting through his offerings in the morning when I get back to the grind.

I can't find it, but there was a clip of Otzdarva just playing a non meta killer, and just getting t-bagged, flash light click spammed, and all the usual #########, and he's not someone who gets frustrated easily. But even he this time was visibly annoyed.

And he basically said something along the lines of: See? This is why people play Nurse, Billy or Spirit, and then survivors get upset when they're the only killers they see at red ranks.

    The Depressing Clown Game.

This is a guy who dominates on Trapper at red ranks, for those who don't know. On Trapper. He acknowledges some mistakes he made during play in a comment under the vid, but his fundamental assessment is accurate.

Not only does this game change wildly depending on the skill of those playing it, it changes wildly based on what killer is present. It's difficult

By this statement you contradict your own self so it's basically your fault how start off locating survivor's and either stopping gen progression or slowing the game down

So have a low tier killer isn't the problem it's the players ability

What's the contradiction, exactly? Something can be influenced by more than one factor at once. A good player on a bad killer will probably do better than a bad player on a good killer, but not as well as a good player on a good killer.

"..if you lose as them - its clearly your fault.."

And you wanted them to buff the other killers? And survivors? Or we play only so you can have fun?

Solo survivors could use some help, probably.

Buffing low tier killers is good for everyone. Fewer games against Nurse/Spirit at high ranks. I imagine balancing would be less of a headache too. Not only does this game change wildly depending on the skill of those playing it, it changes wildly based on what killer is present. It's difficult to imagine that Spirit and Clown are part of the same game.

I only really play during double BP events now. I played on console originally and recently switched to PC it sucked having to start over I had almost all my killers lvl 50.

On the plus side I know now not to unlock the ######### teachables so the grind isn't that bad getting the perks you want and now you get more perk options after hitting level 50 so its not that bad.

Yeah, I think it's one of the snowball things. It hits newer players harder because we don't have a well-oiled farming machine set up and because, yeah, it's easier to get stuff done at level 50 than at level 5.

  • It depends on who I'm playing and how it's going. I'd say around 30k for a decent match on a non-farming killer like Myers, 50-60k on a decent match with someone more suited to BP grinding like Doctor.

If I'm playing a killer that's low level, doesn't have good perks unlocked, or that I'm unfamiliar with, it hovers more in the 15k-20k range. And, you know, the inevitable defeats that come with it.

I don't actually like playing Doctor much, I got him to 35 just for M&A on Myers, and I'm using him now for max BP during the hunt. I've pulled in around 100k a couple times, usually somewhere around 80k-90k during the event so far.

Honestly, I wouldn't have an issue with the BP totals if there weren't so many killers to level up.

  • @SpaceCoconut said:

While the flood of items is a good reason. I always thought that the primary reason people came back for these were to gain perks on their favorite killers or level up the new ones with ease.

The natural grind is still pretty absurd even after it's adjustment.

That's certainly what I'm doing. I'm playing my butt off right now just so I can get all my killers to level 15. It doesn't sound like much but there's a lot of them. That's hundreds of thousands of blood points just to get all their perk slots unlocked.

That's not even unlocking their teachables or optimizing them in any way. Hundreds of thousands of BP just to get them functional, so they can have a full kit.

  • @Dicklaycia said:

I wonder if it would be better for the Bloodpoint economy if they just scrapped perk tiers at the moment. We simply have too many perks to unlock in addition to having to max them out to get the full benefits, and that’s not counting prestiging and having to start the grind all over again. Maybe that will help lessen the grind?

That would make a big difference. I see no reason for perks to have tiers except to artificially prolong an already ridiculous grind. The only perk I can think of that people prefer at tier 1 is Discordance and that's just poorly designed imho.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been playing since November 2018, and have accomplished the following:

    - 37 of 57 survivor teachables unlocked. All available perks stacked on a single, non-prestiged survivor.

    - 47 of 51 killer teachables unlocked. All available perks stacked on a single, non-prestiged killer (Spirit).

    - Currently using the double BP weekend to make headway toward stacking all killer perks on a second killer (Freddy) with plans for a third (Hillbilly), so I can actually branch out and play more than one killer effectively. The Freddy task alone will cost an estimated 3.5 million BP.

That's ALL I've got to show from nearly A FULL. YEAR. Of playing.

Taking a single character from level 1 to 40 (all teachables unlocked) takes approximately 1.1 million BP if you manage Bloodwebs efficiently. Unlocking all teachables in this manner, disregarding the Shrine of Secrets, currently takes almost 40 million BP. And that's just too get them UNLOCKED.

I'm so far averaging 85,000 BP per match during the double BP weekend, based on an even mix of survivor/killer matches. At WORST, this should be the norm.

I dunno how Behaviour is not deeply ashamed of the grind's current state. "Well, our players put up with it" is not a rationale.

Yeah... that's insane. It's also one reason why I don't ever see myself branching out into survivor gameplay. The idea of doing this all twice is just... not okay.

The grind is so bad that even players in unrelated threads comment on it, in one of the DC threads a guy took a screenshot of the post-match lobby and someone was like "wow you got all your meta perks before 40, so jealous" and he responds with "yeah but not on any of my other killers".

I don't see how the game benefits from this system. If anything, it must make balancing an even greater nightmare.

I really want to see the player churn numbers for the Switch version. God I bet a lot of players drop this game fast when they see the grind that they're in for.

My worst fear is that they've already done the numbers on this and determined that they make more money from people who drop in, buy a character or two, then give up after a week than they do from long term players who stick around.

A lot of F2P MMOs jumped onto this model a few years back once they realize it was cheaper and more profitable to keep cycling in new players who buy some crap and then quit than it is to design content for hardcore fans. Same goes for the bulk of the mobile gaming market.

I love this game so much that it almost feels like slander to suggest it, but I have a hard time understanding why the grind is as insane as it is otherwise.

This. Xboned, I feel like we've crossed paths here before, criticizing the awful grind. Good to see you. :D

This is one of the most wantonly, unapologetic games ever created when it comes to the developer disrespecting players' time with unfriendly and oppressive grind mechanics. I shouldn't have to put 200 hours into the game to play the character that I want at a reasonably competent level.

Just detach perks from the Bloodweb system, put them in a shop where you can purchase a la carte with BP, and ideally condense them into single-rank perks. Also, make teachables unlock at levels 15/20/25 or something.

Or, I dunno, roll that "four perks on every web" change out across ALL character levels.

Swear to god, I dunno why Behaviour clings to this awful grind like a security blanket. Prioritize your players' fun and happiness and early learning experiences over your wrongheaded perceptions about these miserable player retention practices

Oh yeah, good times. One of the first things I did here was make a thread on this very subject because it was driving me so crazy. I want to play this game all the time, but every time I'm stopped by experiences like this:

"Hmm... games have been going well, but Ruin's getting cleansed a little too quickly. After doing some research, it seems like PGTW works better for me at high levels of play. So I'll just... uh. Get Clown from level 1 to... 40? FFS."

Obviously, I'm still here because I really do love playing this game, but... that's just it. I love playing this game, not poring over spreadsheets for optimal BP efficiency. Not wasting days of my life and millions of BP just so I can change a single perk.

Excuse me, so I can get a chance at changing at a single perk.

  • New Freddy is generally considered to be top or high-mid tier from what I've seen. Snares are stronk and that teleport is no joke.

Doctor's my main BP grinder though and I do play on Xbox, so maybe you'll get some stick time with me later on.

  • Newbie: Cool game, how do I get better?

Me: Here's a bunch of guides and videos, also you need to buy Leatherface

Newbie: I don't want to play Leatherface

Me: Yeah well, if you don't buy him and grind him up all your other grinding will take literally twice as long

Newbie: Okay but I just really want to play this one killer right now

Me: Oh right, in order to get good with them you're going to need to unlock perks from all these other killers too

Newbie: But you just said to get Leatherf--

Me: I mean AFTER you get Leatherface up to 35, you can work on these other killers

    Newbie: But--

Me: See, you have to grind Leatherface so it's easier to grind other killers so you can play your main well

    Newbie:

    image.png

PS: This is before considering the fact that unlocking a teachable perk doesn't automatically grant it. You have to grind a killer to 30+ just to unlock a chance of it appearing in the bloodweb of other killers. Then you have to repeat that two more times to max out its rank.

You could do all the teachable grinding necessary and still not have what you need at level 50 due to RNG. We're talking about wasting literal millions of blood points just to customize or optimize your build.

  • @KrazyKat1011123 said:

I think the X2 bloodpoint should be the normal ammount of bp that you get. The new bp buff made so its easier to get every perk on every charecter which is only usefull for killers. I have been playing this game for about a year and I got burnt out for about 3 months because of the grind. I only have the teachable perks for the survivors (bisides steve) and just started for killer.

I 100% support this. I wish I could give it more likes.

I joined this game about two months ago, there are so many things I love about it, but the grind is STUPID. THIS IS A STUPID GRIND. It serves no purpose other than to turn off new players. I'm playing way more during this event than I do usually and I'm having a lot of fun because I feel like I'm not throwing my time away into a black hole if I play more than a few games per day.

    @Kilmeran said:

@Nikkiwhat I've been saying it since I started as a new player about a year ago. I can't get my friends or family to touch the game because of the asinine grind for new players. A grind that only increases every three months.

YUP. I have a good gaming friend who was interested in this game, I got them interested in a specific killer, then I had to be like "but wait there's more!" and explain the teachable perk grind to them.

Haven't heard a peep about this game from them since then.

*Slowly holds up BBQ and C along with We're gonna live forever*

BBQ is an amazing perk, it's my first priority on every killer, but the fact that it's as mandatory as it is should be a flashing red warning light to the developers.

  • I don't understand why someone would bring in a mori. It hurts their BP too.

I can kinda see it in exceptional situations... last game I had what I suspect was an SWF group and three of them loaded in with toolboxes. I would consider that an ebony mori situation, but I didn't have any and I'm glad tbh. It was much more profitable as a regular 4k.

  • I've yet to play anyone but Doctor during the Blood Hunt both because he's awesome for BP and because he's my only killer with Whispers at rank 3.

Hugely underrated perk, saves so much time.

  • I honestly feel like we should have double BP all the time, there is *so much* crap to buy that for once I actually feel like I'm making decent progress on my goals.

On topic, sucks that people are acting this way. I personally don't farm, but I've been trying to give people a chance to do gens and allow some survivors. I don't know how much BP the little squishies lose by dying, but I've been giving hatches and letting people crawl out the exit gate if I feel like they earned it.

    Nice description.

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/695215#Comment_695215

It's arguable that this rule is of the entity's own making, and the endgame collapse is it's growing thirsty for a kill or some sort of climax to the point where it breaks this rule. It's also arguable that it's because the realm is deteriorating, allowing the Entity to break through.

    It's arguable, sure.

My original statement was simply intended to reflect my lack of certainty on what the official explanation for it would be.

  • I love threads like this, it's nice to some passion that isn't garbled up in toxicity.

Hag is indeed impressive, at least in the hands of a capable player. I don't know if my brain is big enough, personally. I tried her out in my first week of play due to everyone swearing by Ruin, but it was pretty overwhelming compared to, like, Hillbilly.

I'm using the blood hunt to level up all my neglected baby killers though, so maybe I'll spend some time with the lovely Ms Sherwood again soon.

  • Essentially. There's still plenty of balancing that needs to be done, but yeah. The fundamental problem is that any killer outside the holy trinity just doesn't have any way to put out the pressure required to keep survivors from splitting up and banging out gens at opposite ends of the map.

I think the trend of things with the Freddy rework and Demogorgon design (portals and such)show that they're at least somewhat aware of this.

  • @Kilmeran said:

It's not so much that the game is that grossly imbalanced. It really isn't. The core issue is the absolutely abysmal map designs. It's the maps that require the holy trinity of Billy, Spirit, and Nurse against optimal survivors, because they have the mobility for so many of the large maps. The normal-speed killers simply can't do enough.

    What this gentleman said.

  • I've been having a good time for the most part, though I did notice an uptick in DCs and selfish play from survivors.

There was one match where there were 3 left, 1 slugged at one end of the map and 1 on hook at the other. The last remaining survivor chose to heal themselves and go for the hatch rather than trying to save either, even after I backed off and waited in the corner for a bit so they could do just that.

Aside from moments like that, where people are sandbagging their team for absolutely no reason beyond their own myopic selfishness, it's been pretty nice. I no longer have any level 1 killers! Now I'm working on getting them all to 10, then tomorrow it will be to 15, etc.

If I end this event with all my killers' perk slots unlocked, I'll be a happy dude. Seems like it should be pretty easy with ol' Doctor, I got about 100k points in a single game earlier somehow.

  • @brokedownpalace said:

Survivors and killers can and do get along. The difference is that you only hear from the loudest, whiniest people because they never stop arguing or complaining.

I save all the messages I get from survivors on XBL and the majority of them are friendly. There's definitely some salt in there, even one time an accusation of hacking when I played Myers (not my fault you don't pay attention, ma'am), but most of it is "gg" and the like, the occasional "da homie" or "you're the best" when I give someone the hatch.

  • I'm a killer main, I love playing the killer. I love that I get to play a monster, I love that my job is hunting people. I enjoy tracking scratch marks, listening for sounds, searching for hidden survivors. The thrill of the chase is very real for me.

I can't play survivor at all, I don't enjoy it, I don't like letting other people down. Maybe one day that will change, but I enjoy playing killer so much that it seems unlikely. I'm willing to put up with the stress of the role because the payoff is oh so sweet.

But I need survivors. A killer without survivors is just a bored, sad dude. So I feel it behooves me to empathize with them to at least some degree. I also try to watch survivor streamers, read survivor guides, and get into their heads as much as possible.

I like to be even-handed. I do take special delight in murdering players who piss me off, but I also enjoy giving the exit to players who really fight for their lives without being toxic.

For me, the biggest turning point in my relationship to survivors was the realization that I get paid per hook. BBQ really drove this point home. Once I hook everyone at least once, I get pretty chill. I'll still kill a whole team if they let me, but I'm not sweaty or salty about it.

  • I'd be all for an unranked mode. All bets are off, never know what the next match might look like. I would attach some rewards to ranked mode, like extra shards or BP. Maybe even like a ticket to one free cosmetic item for those who end the "season" (rank reset)at red ranks so there's at least some reason to bother with all that.

  • There seems to be a DC epidemic in general right now.

  • I defaulted to Ruin because I was told it was essential, so I rushed unlocking it. I've been hearing a lot of great things about PGTW, so I tried playing a little Clown and I have to say... this perk is pretty great. Being able to actively contest a hot generator is a new and exciting option to me. They can't just tap their way out of that regression.

I may like it a lot more than Ruin.

  • On topic, Freddy seems to be one of the only M1 killers aside from Billy that can really compete at high levels of play, so... let's not mess him up.

As others have pointed out, comparing him to Clown is a bad idea because Clown is a hot pile of circus garbage. "Hi, my power is slowing down the survivors. That's it, that's my power. Also, I slow myself down way more than I could ever slow them. Balance!"

There shouldn't be any movement speed penalty for reloading.

So maybe not run to the shack when you're facing up against a dream snare Freddy with the pallet down, then?

God forbid survivors are punished for making a mistake. What a foreign concept.

May as well say Huntress isn't allowed to throw hatchets in wide open spaces because it's too easy to get hit by one.

The Entity was unprepared when OSHA representatives began to appear in its realm...

  • I empathize with people who want to be able to play SWF without so many issues, but I'm tired of never knowing whether I'm going to face a bunch of sweaty loop gods or rank noobs in every match.

  • I don't see why we can't just have an unranked mode of some kind. Toss some BP or shard rewards on ranked mode. That way if people want to roll the dice and have fast matchmaking with whoever the hell shows up, they can, and those of us who don't want surprise red ranks in our matches every other game can have a more stable experience.

  • @TragicSolitude said:

Usually, my reaction is, "Crap, is that the survivor who just got off the hook?" because it means I got the survivors mixed up.

Except one time when I went, "#########, how has it not been 60 seconds yet?" because I'd already hooked two other survivors since they were unhooked.

After a few days of getting tunneled out of every game within the first couple of minutes, I finally unlocked the DS teachable and started using it. So, I don't begrudge survivors bringing DS; it most likely means they're in the same boat as me, reaching the point where they've just had enough and would like to stay in the match long enough to do something.

And that's why I don't mind DS one bit. Sucks to get hit with, but I'm glad the little squishies running around have some way to reclaim their playing time from bottom-feeding killers.

  • @Carlosylu said:

I don't tend to tunnel, I actually go for the saviour when they unhook in my face or really close to me but if the survivor who was unhooked runs straight to me or is dumb enough to think that I can't hear his moans of pain he's getting downed for taking for granted I'm not going for him cause "that would be tunneling" (it's not, in my opinion) and he decided not to hide or run away.

Having in mind I don't tunnel, whenever I grab a downed survivor and he has DS and he/she lands it correctly, something happens in my mind, call it the Entity if you want, but that DS just makes me wanna focus on who ever used it, I don't know if it's the animation, or the sensation of feeling powerless for 2 seconds when I'm the one in charge, but it just gets to me and that person is gonna die...

I have to state that if I'm carrying someone and I get blinded or somehow a teammate gives the grabbed one time to wiggle out, I go for the rescuer, not for the person who got away by wiggling out, that's why I'm asking:

What do you feel when someone lands a DS on you?

I know those "Entity" moments, though mine don't come from DS. I think it's a good perk, I understand why people run it, and I'm glad people have a tool to fight tunneling. Plus, I'm like a yautja... I respect prey that fights back. Show me you want to live.

Flashlight saves are what make me see red. They're frustrating, they're embarrassing, and they make me feel foolish for getting caught by them. It's compounded by the fact that survivors who pull one off tend to get cocky afterward, last one immediately ran to a nearby pallet and started clicking/teabagging.

I was playing Doctor, so... you know. Zap, hit, down. Hooked and dead soon after. I love when people forget that Herman can stun them.

  • "It's bad for new players to be forced to go against players much higher rank than themselves" is a sword that cuts both ways. At least the SWF version comes with friends and voice chat, the killer version just comes with lonely, bitter tears of regret.

  • Okay, last one for real this time. I need to make myself step away from the keyboard.

  • This is for Evil Ed, wherever he is now. You will be remembered. Camping MFer.

    And one for the survivors.

And now I need to stop because I love DbD memes way too much.

  • It's as much of a forum joke as anything? He played a game with Clown where he got stomped hard and yeah, it was kinda ridiculous, but people around here kept posting it over and over. I've noticed whenever someone on the forums wants to be like "survivors are OP, here's a really good streamer who proves it" they link to Tru.

Since exposition is the death of humor, I'mma meme some more.

  • Oh, sorry. Just a joke about a streamer with some outspoken opinions about survivor balance.

Not gonna lie, this was distracting AF in the first game I played with him in it.
