My personal problem isn't the fact that some of the characters are beyond heterosexuality. Kudos, don't really care, just like how I don't care about how David supposedly has an ex girlfriend or Frank and Julie are smashing. My problem is the big deal they're making about this with these announcements. They could've easily incorporated their life story into the lore with mentions of ex (insert gender here) lover and most wouldn't have cared.
Also, why? Why does it matter that you need to hear someone's sexuality? I promise you that most people who play this game, don't give a fly duck about who's straight or not. They enjoy the lore, but that's not why they're playing it. And lastly, you couldn't feel represented and relate to characters before such as Dwight who suffers from anxiety and wants to fit in? Or Claudette who's a science geek and loves botany? Why is it when someone's sexuality or political stance or anything outside of a character's actual personality matter to people instead of the actual traits that define a person?
Indeed, it doesn't matter. So why are you making a big deal out of it? All the devs said is that they had already added heterosexuality, so they were going "all in" and branching out.

Pretty sure the nurse and wraith thing is not canon and was just for cosmetics, the devs in I believe a QnA awhile back have stated killers do not interact with each other between trials and they are simply in a void or being tortured by the entity. My opinion on this is that its unnecessary and not really needed. Its your character you are playing and controlling if you want you can just fill in the blanks yourself and think what you want of them, also lol can’t you right now make a femboy legion with a cosmetic glitch?
Nurse's husband is mentioned in her lore.

It's also possible to create a character that is gay without ever even mentioning it. Create their lore with the mindset of them being gay. Maybe a pin or something subtle added to their outfit. Idk what it would be, though.
Fun fact: it's not that they're going to create explicitly non-heterosexual characters, it's that they have already been created, but weren't "outed" as such.

Welp time to get banned
I complain about sexuality not mattering to begin with because this is a game about people getting brutally murdered not about what person David or Laurie was dating before they died
Yeah, that won't get you banned. I don't know why you thought it would since many people have said that, myself included.
I agree, it doesn't matter. However, since it's been here since Nurse, they might as well go all in. Why stop at heterosexual relationships?

If you don't read lore and say it doesn't matter, why are you complaining about it? The lore is where it'll be mentioned.

Happened with nurse?
Nurse's husband is quite explicitly mentioned in her lore.
If you'd read the devs' tweet, you'd see that the they're just saying that while, originally, they didn't intend to explicitly confirm characters' sexual orientations, they'd already done that with heterosexuals and their vision of the game is not the same as it once was. Therefore, they will go "all in" and just say everyone's orientation.
It amazes me that nobody seemed to notice that some characters already had their orientations "confirmed" and are only making a fuss now that the devs want to confirm more than just heterosexuals' orientations.
-
@terumisan said:
In a game where you get brutally impaled sexuality doesn't matter can we just not mention sexuality at all and leave it up to the fans to interpret in their fanfiction
That ship sailed long ago, with the Nurse.

i just hope they don’t give every character an explicit sexual orientation, they should just mention it in the lore if it fits there.
also I hope Yui will be either straight or bi, just because the lesbian leader of an all female biker gang would be kinda cliche.
Well, that's how they did it for (presumably) heterosexuals, so I don't see why they'd completely drop the ball now, especially given that they have LGBT staff.

Its not wrong to assume everyone is heterosexual though. Only about 5% of the US population is LGBT and soldier is from the US.
True, statistically people are more likely to be heterosexual. However, to expect non-heterosexuals to have "hints" that they're not heterosexual is still heteronormative. I don't think I need to tell you that the majority of non-heterosexuals don't go out of their way to pass as heterosexual. They're just normal people.

The Q originally meant questioning. Despite whats being said in the media its still very widely used and regarded to as a slur and obviously it bugs me so leave it at that.
And I'm trying to tell you it doesn't have to. Trust me, you can tell the difference when someone uses it to be a bigot and when someone uses it the proper way.

Qu**r. Its still a slur to a lot of LGBT people.
Now it's a catch-all term for any and all people who're not cis and heterosexual. Hence LGBTQ, if you put the Q there. It was "taken back" from the bigots, if you will.

https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/comment/1347405#Comment_1347405
Honestly I'm not exactly into Overwatch, but I think that him being gay was shown through a video at Blizzcon? Instead of having that video shown when it was, well after the game and his release, have that have just been part of the video explaining his backstory. It doesn't even have to be so super obvious in your face, change the design, bright pink magical unicorn, just something along the lines of showing Soldier giving his bf a peck on the cheeck, or even a hug. That, imo, would've been better (but Orion thought that the way they handled it was better, so all props to them).
Sorry, but the rainbow gun is not for mortal eyes. It was given to me by this big guy. Goes by "Thor", maybe you've heard of him.

Bruh coming from a hardcore femboy, you can have little bits of dialogue without it being 'heteronormative' like- no offense but how is saying "Oh I always thought (insert soldier 76 crush character here) would be a good boyfriend." heteronormative?
What? I'm referring to the fact that putting "hints" that a character isn't heterosexual reinforces the notion that everyone is heterosexual unless stated/hinted otherwise, which is exactly what the heteronormative cliché is.

Well, this thread certainly blew up. A few people pretending they don't care and some others complaining (even though there are other threads for that), as expected, but mostly real comments.
Here's what I think (S - Straight; L - Lesbian; G - Gay; B - Bisexual; A - Asexual):
Survivors
- Dwight - S
- Meg - S
- Claudette - A
- Jake - G or B
- Nea - L
- Ace - S
- Feng - S or A
- David - S
- Kate - L
- Adam - G
- Jeff - S
- Jane - S
- Yui - L or B
- Zarina - S
Killers
- Trapper - S or A
- Wraith - G
- Hillbilly - A
- Nurse - S
- Hag - S
- Doctor - A
- Huntress - A
- Clown - S or B
- Spirit - S
- Legion - 3 are S and I get the feeling Joey's G
- Plague - S or A
- Oni - S or A
- Deathslinger - G
EDIT: If you're wondering why no "T", it's because I don't believe the devs have included any so far.
EDIT #2: And if you're wondering why I included "B" and "A" even though I said the devs wouldn't include them, call it wishful thinking.

I would be fine with that as long as they don't suddenly make an established character gay for the sake of being gay instead they should make a new one but being gay should not be their defining characteristic.
There are many established characters without any hints as to their sexual orientation. No prior relationships, nothing. Even those that do have them could still be bisexual (yup, those are a thing).

I'm sorry, I should have worded myself better. It's 3am right now lol.
If you're going to have a character be LGBTQ+, the best way to do it is to have that in mind from the start, and have it written into their character from the start. Be it explicit or implicit, it's part of them and so should be there. Otherwise it looks like you're just shoehorning in LGBTQ+ for the sake of it, and not having a fully-fledged character that was designed from the start. Must they be flamboyant, don bright pink, scream "YASS QUEEN" every three seconds and shoot people with rainbows? No, but having something is nice, so it makes people feel like they were always meant to be included and not something done for PR.
I agree he wasn't "made gay"- it's biological. That doesn't mean something from the start wouldn't have been nice, so that everyone would've been included from the get-go.
For the record, I have nothing against Soldier being gay.
YASS QUEEN!
My rainbow gun is in the garage and I don't like pink, so that's all you're getting out of me.
In all seriousness, while I understand what you mean, the problem is that doing that reinforces the heteronormative "cliché", if you will. I quite enjoyed how they did it because, more often than not, that's how it happens.

All these explicit acceptances are basically saying "look, these kind of people are different from us because X, but we should learn to treat them rightfully", which is already bad, because, as I emphasized, it instantly creates a barrier "us from them". If it is implicitly accepted, where not every major company has to say 24h that it doesn't condone discrimination (like it's ######### normal in 21st century), every minority would be accepted easier, because it would slowly become the normality (like it should be).
Given that there are gay torture camps still active to this day, I welcome the explicit acceptance and assistance some people and companies provide, as opposed to passive acknowledgement without any assistance. If that creates a divide between normal people and bigots, so be it.

Why would you assume he was?
Heteronormativity is prevalent in the world, and was even more so when soldier was released.
I wouldn't. I also wouldn't assume he wasn't because I genuinely don't give a #########.
You're right, it is prevalent, but that doesn't mean he was "made gay". When I came out to my mom as bisexual, I didn't "become bisexual". I always was, and then I told her about it.

Not to be rude or anything, but where are you seeing heterosexual relationships in this game? The only one I can think of is Julie and Frank, and maybe The Nurse and The Wraith (but idk if thats one's confirmed).
The Nurse's backstory literally mentions her husband. Many characters have such lines in their lore, which is what we should expect for LGBT characters as well.

Why do you assume he wasn't?

That's the right way to go about it. There's no such thing as "hints" that someone is gay. LGBT people are just people, they come in all shapes and sizes.

No, the fact they announced it on Twitter proves it was pandering. Didn't think I'd have to spell it out for you.
They announced that they realized they'd been adding heterosexual relationships even though they'd previously said they didn't want to explicitly mention characters' sexual orientations at all. Since their vision changed, they're gonna go "all in" on this and reveal more orientations, keeping in mind that the characters do have them, they just weren't always mentioned. That is, quite literally, what they spelled out.

Indeed. They realized that their actions hadn't matched their words, so they admitted that and said they would no longer just be adding heterosexual relationships because they want to add more non-heterosexual relationships since that's their current vision for the game. I'm glad we agree that they're not trying to pander to non-heterosexuals.

And I'm guessing you're a mind reader or will hook the devs up to a polygraph (that actually works)?

Theres no problem with lgbtq characters. Hell i would argue that a select minority of the playerbase even cares about it. I would also argue that if they just put a gay character in the game, hardly anyone would have said a thing.
When they created the nurse or legion, there wasnt an announcement like hey look at us! We created a relationship to tell a story to flesh out and make the character interesting.
Want a gay character make a gay character. Why throw a billboard up? Theres no point except to pander to the 'woke' crowd.
Again, i don't care what they want to do as i could care less what people do with their own bodies. I just love this game and don't want to fail due to the all too common, 'Get woke, go broke' curse.

If you just do it, there is no virtue signalling. When you make an effort to draw attention to you doing it, that is virtue signalling, which means you are being political.
So nobody who does anything nice can ever show it because they're being political? Have you considered that people might like good news every once in a while in their social media between all the doom and gloom, bots, racists, and fake news?

The devs put out one tweet, like they usually do when they want to add something to the game. The only people I see making a big deal out of this are you and people like you. Even LGBT people, like myself, are just thinking/saying "Hey, neat", at best. Nobody's making a big deal out of this except the guys screaming at the top of their lungs that they don't want no LGBT people in their game because having LGBT is a political statement and they're "shoving it down our throats" and whatnot.
