I miss it for the visuals and aesthetic, but the actual gameplay was never really good.
First it was extremely survivor sided, and now it is extremely killer sided. This map has never been balanced.
Reverting it back to one of its previous iterations could be a good first step, but the map would need further changes.

You can't take someone else seriously? 2.5% is nothing, and you're gonna get upset over that, and not base BT which always gets abused as an offensive tool to waste killer's time. How is free speed (as fast as some killers), Endurance (another health state + sprint burst), and body blocking trivial? The killer can just ignore all of that, and not lose anything for it?
To be fair, the killer can ignore the basekit BT.
-
Honestly, they might as well revert Haddonfield back to one of its previous iterations and take things from there.
The changes really gutted that map, there is barely anything for survivors to use.
-
Usually I'd go with Elvira, however rewatching most of Scream franchise recently has changed my answer.

There are matches where slugging is literally necessary because of the time disadvantage you need to catch up from. Not all time disadvantages are your fault, and on killer I think it's the default vs good survivors. But the point is, if you're never gonna be able to down and hook survivors fast enough, through not fault of your own, before the gens are done and they run out, what other choice is there for you to win? It's a false choice.
While I agree that there are certain situations where slugging is necessary, I don't think they happen due to time disadvantage. At least not as often as it is said. I think it is still possible to get good results by spreading hooks.
But I'll share two screenshots of my own:
This game I've had during the Blood Moon event is what I would define as necessary slugging, because this particular survivor (who used a map offering) had Boil Over, and it was literally impossible for me to bring her to a hook. Here there was no choice.
However:
Here is unnecessary slugging at its finest. The killer was definitely not at a disadvantage here. This Hillbilly had no reason to slug, he simply chose to do it.

His second layer is really amazing, it's probably the one that I mostly hear in my surv matches, but I can't decide between it and his chase
I think his theme's second layer is better than his chase, but I can see why it is hard to choose. They did a hell of a good job with his music.

His old kit had identity and uniqueness. I hope they bring the old kit with tweaks. Add Incapacitated status to the dream transition, keep his gen teleport, remove all the dream snare/pallet stuff, it’s totally just copies from other killers and adds nothing unique. If you want to keep one of them just make the dream pallets being added a passive that happens periodically and not an active thing. The manual putting survivors to sleep, unable to injure them till asleep, auras of asleep survivors outside a certain range and him being completely invisible to awake survivors was so unique and what we need back. His old kit had a solid core that only needed small tweaks.
Love ya <3

Slinger's layer 2 is really, really good. The western vibe mixed with DBD's iconic main theme (Dies Irae, more accurately, but you get what I mean) is perfect.

Well, for years I wanted Freddy to get his old power back. It was the very reason why I joined the Forums in the first place and it broke my heart when I learned it was not going to happen.
Now… I am not sure what they will do to my favorite killer this time.

I think Laurie and Meg are better answers than Bill, tbh.
Especially Meg.
There have been other survivors with powerful perks like Claudette, Gabriel and Mikaela but Laurie and Meg are almost impossible to beat.
Don't even remind me. That was genuinely miserable if you played a M1 killer.

If you start a chase with a survivor hit them, and they immediately run to a loop that contains killer shack into jungle gym into main building and its away from where someone is that you just hooked and away from generators, you are wasting your time and should go back to patrolling generators.
The reason most killers lose games is not because they are patrolling gens, but because they are wasting too much time in chases. The first thing you should be doing as soon as you load into the map is identifying where the strong loops are (usually near main buildings and killer shacks) and then trying to chase survivors away from those areas, and not to them.
I mostly agree about kicking gens. Generally you should really only kick gens if you have perks that are making that useful like Pop/Nowhere to Hide/Unforeseen etc.
The reason most killers lose games is not because they are patrolling gens, but because they are wasting too much time in chases.
Honestly, I blame the sheer amount of anti-loop killers added to the game in quick succession for that.
We've had way too many characters who are extremely oppressive in chases and that is their only power. If their chases fail, the killer just falls apart. These characters are very unlikely to drop chase, because it is what they are designed to do.

Cowshed in my opinion is generally very well balanced now. The best coldwin farm map.
In general I don't think coldwin maps need to be reverted or redesigned, they just need their minimum amount of pallets increased noticeably, so that you don't end up with maps that have too little pallets.
I don't think that would be enough, to be honest, because the tiles themselves are also extremely weak. Survivors need resources in order to survive, and the Old Coldwind realm used to provide said resources.

The thing I really dislike is how Freddy vision is impaired because he's always in the dream world. It's really difficult to see on some maps without changing your brightness and contrast settings. Ormond is a good example. All the white scenery, plus snow, plus the dream world is rough.
I honestly prefer the Dream World filter over the default look, especially on reworked maps.
I'm just used to it.

2021. We may have had this conversation before, you and I, but I'd be surprised if you of all people bought into that whole business, that outcry of, "Nerf Freddy because he's S tier! He's Nurse level!" As an M1 killer, with a tablespoon of slowdown via add-ons. "Forever Freddy." Please. That build included Ruin, which is a hex that could be destroyed. Used Pop as well, a perk dependent on the killer getting multiple downs fast, and kicking gens before they're done. Don't know what other perks were used, but they were most definitely negligible. A team who let Freddy beat them using that was likely to lose to him anyway, and that's the philosophy I often use when defending killer stuff. But I know you think Freddy is stronger than popular belief. Even you would agree that his S tier placement (at the time), the way the nerf was done, and especially his nerfed Dream Pallet count, was uncalled for, right?
you would agree that his S tier placement (at the time), the way the nerf was done, and especially his nerfed Dream Pallet count, was uncalled for, right?
Absolutely.
As someone who mained him throughout the entire "Forever Freddy" era, I don't think he had the same level of strength Nurse and old Spirit had. And the nerf to the Dream Pallets, when they were never good to begin with, was pretty terrible.
However, I don't think he was healthy for the game either. For a variety of reasons that have already been discussed extensively here in the Forums, and especially due to the impact it had for people who played him before the rework. I wanted Freddy to change, yes, but I don't like the way he was changed.
I am not happy with current Freddy. Not at all.
Don't know what other perks were used, but they were most definitely negligible
Dying Light and Thanatophobia, if the Freddy player was going for max slowdown.

Camping and tunneling are kind of forced at this point. You can play the game normally, and lose every time. Or you can use these strategies, like a normal person in any other online game would, and maybe win.
I don't know why it isn't obvious to everyone, but SWF are the most privileged role of all. They literally never get nerfed. It's always stuff that affects solos and killers. All this solo buffing does is make SWF stronger, because the buffs you're giving these solos... They're not even supposed to be winning. The reason they're not winning is because they're bad, uncarryable even. No amount of buffs is going to make uncarryable teammates carryable, and neither is killer nerfs that are blatantly anti-fun and cater to the most casual level survivors possible/super biased survivor mains. "Killer shouldn't even be able to see aura" and crap like that.
It does feel like killers are seen as the strongest they can be, and survivors as their weakest. "But what if the killer has a really strong start and plays well?" Then he should win. "But what if the survivors play really bad and give up?" Then they should lose.
The 40% escape rate, if it wasn't obvious, is because survivors play bad. They throw the game, and throw the killer free kills constantly, in almost every match. And like I've said before, even if the kill rate is 60%, most likely a majority of games the killer is drawing. The survivors complaining about dying all the time, and always blaming the killer instead of themselves or their teammates, need to play killer. Watch in amazement as you do like 3-5 normal chases, nothing crazy but nothing bad either, and see that the game's already over. That's what happens when your survivor opponents aren't nothing.
I think it's misworded to say that killers have responsibility for the game pace. They definitely bear the punishment of the game pace. It's really controlled by survivors, because they can, at any time, just decide to focus on gens, and they're done. I've seen it, from unbeatable SWF teams to my half-cocked solo teams. I get on the gen with 1 other person and think out loud, "Oh look. We could have done this at any time, and closed out the game." instead of looping badly, healing constantly, and taking forever to do anything.
Updates most certainly are reactionary, and it's terrible. The one proactive change they ever did was give Huntress 7 hatchets. People lost their minds. But don't you see? People are saying even now that she's fallen out of favor in recent years. She's just too slow, and no amount of hatchet cap raising is gonna make her Nurse/Blight level: viable. Them giving her those extra hatchets, when they did, means that she's not as trash now as she would have been considered. But all the other reactive changes, you could go on and on about how nonsensical they were. Freddy nerf, Wraith nerf Pinhead nerf, Pig nerf, Twins nerf, Pop nerf, Pain Res nerf, Eruption nerf, Clown add-ons nerf, Nemesis zombies nerf, Knight nerf, base BT, base anti-camp, self-blocking gens, hook timer increase. They're all in response to complaints about strong killer stuff. BUT are those complaints well-founded? Are they affecting players who know what they're doing, and actually play both roles? I think not!
Which Freddy nerf? The one immediately after his release or the one he got in 2021?

Fixing Gideon involves a lot more than just adjusting loop design. Sometimes, main buildings are fundamentally flawed, like the asylum or garden of joy. The latter barely got any better in the last update.
Or just revert Gideon back to its original layout and adjust the number of pallets.

This is correct it's not the offerings. It is the maps that need the work. Map offerings should only be for preference and not to convey any strong advantages for either role.
There still are a few killer builds that are absolutely map dependant, but that speaks more to certain add-ons needing changes.
True that, my friend.

Jokes aside. I think you are correct, however. Fixing maps is an even harder task to deal with than removing map offerings. They more often than not can decide the outcome of the game for whoever brings it.
Removing map offerings would help a lot right now to tackle to overoptimization that this game heavily suffers from.
I don't think fixing the maps is particularly hard, to be honest.
We've had excellently balanced maps in the past: Original Chapel, Coal Tower, most of the Coldwind maps after patch 3.7.0 (except Cowshed), most of the Autohaven maps after the number of pallets was adjusted.
It is easier and better than removing map offerings, imo.

Here are some uncomfortable counter points and other thoughts:
You aren't high/Max MMR, you're just in over your head.
Camping and tunneling aren't necessary for the average player in any sense. These are base kit "strategies" that are easy for the killer to execute and difficult for survivors to counter effectively. This leads to killers over using these tools for easier wins until the killer eventually boosts their MMR higher than their actual skill level. Typically this is followed by complaining on the forums because the game is "too hard".
If you use camping, tunneling, and slugging as situational tools instead, you'll not only be better at the game, but also be at your actual skill level for easier games. The game is trying to force a 60% kill rate, so you can choose to use camping and tunneling in every situation, sweat every game, and kill about 60%, or you can use game sense, have chill games at your actual skill level, and still kill about 60%.
The killer team has perfect coordination.
Solo survivors have very few built in tools and no effective communication. SWF isn't guaranteed to have communication either. But a team of one person is always on the same page as themselves. There isn't one person doing totems while 3 are trying to escape, for example. Killers in 2v8 have the same problem, where not being on the same page can be detrimental.
A 50% killer win rate does not mean survivors are winning the other half.
Using a 3k or 4k as a killer win, killers are currently winning about 51% of games. Survivors are only winning with a 0k or 1k about 37% of the time. Draws are about 12%, which is the conveniently forgotten statistic.
Whether you look at wins: 51% (which is only partial data since BHVR doesn't post this information) or kill rates: 60% (official data), all of these stats indicate the game is currently balanced in favor of killers.
The killer determines the pace of the game.
This i somewhat agree with. Although, many people need to hear that survivor gameplay is almost entirely in reaction to the killer. If the killer is AFK, survivors game play is "do gens and leave", and everything else is a reaction to what the killer does.
If the killer decides to focus on one survivor, by camping or tunneling, then there are 3 other survivors with nothing to do other than gens.
Update feel reactionary.
Completely agree. Some people on the forums actually feel entitled to change solely based on their feedback and have been angry they haven't been catered to fast enough.
To the Devs:
Mostly agree that there should be a coherent game direction. The devs need to generally have an idea of how they want a game to play out. Things like the current "gen speed increase on hook" are highly confusing because of the obvious implications: people will try to avoid hooks. Is that the gameplay you want?
What, generally speaking, do the devs want a "typical game of DbD" to look like? Because it feels like it's just a sandbox for players to do whatever. But balance changes absolutely affect the gameplay.
Hard disagree, though, that they're balancing for "best killers" vs "low level survivors". Quite the opposite. They're absolutely balancing for SWF, and since they keep making base kit buffs to make killer easier, the trend is more "average killer" should be able to contend with "very coordinated teams". Given that we had "chess merchant" as an extreme example, you had an average killer who nearly beat the best competitive survivor team, I think my assessment is more accurate here.
The killer team has perfect coordination.…Unless you play Knight, that is. The Jailer loves to let me down.
All jokes aside, I mostly agree with what you've said here.

I don't think it is okay to disconnect and abandon your teammates just because you happen to dislike the killer. As I've said on a different comment, your teammates have nothing to do with whether or not you like the character, they are there to play the game.

Map offerings aren't the problem, the map themselves are.
No killer wants to see The Game, no survivor wants Haddonfield or one of the Coldwind deadzones. If the maps were better balanced, something like the good old patch 3.7.0, we wouldn't have this issue.

I guess we'll see with his upcoming rework. Personally I like the mechanic but it just seems like it's holding back creativity because the devs have to worry about the mechanic instead of being able to fully focus on his power, my hope for this rework would be giving Freddy multiple abilities to choose from like Vecna and make it so this mechanic works in a way that isn't so boring and more engaging (Like it used to be) but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the mechanic is gone. I mean it even holds back community creativity because almost everyone worries about making the mechanic work.
I don't think the mechanic holds anything back, and honestly speaking I wouldn't like it if he became something like Vecna.
I think a simple fix to the reveal mechanic plus making Freddy good at controlling the map, as he used to be, is enough for a good rework. But, as you've said, we will have to wait and see.
-
Well, I've seen this discussion before, from a content creator if memory serves me right, but as a long time Freddy I strongly disagree with this idea.
In my opinion the sleep mechanic is not the problem with Freddy, at all.
The problem is that Freddy's power is still designed around his original, flawed rework. Freddy's rework basically deleted his previous version and replaced it with a power that lacked an unique identity and his original playstyle, but it was a very strong and downright unhealthy power. Chasing an awake survivor was not a severe issue with Freddy's post-rework power.
However, we all know that post-rework Freddy had to be changed. And he was changed, but no compensation buffs were given after his nerfs. Meaning we now have a power that is designed to work with a broken level of strength, and said strength no longer exists.
Now, the original idea of pulling survivors into the Dream World in order to attack them made sense and it was much better thematically than what we have now. The problem was being unable to stop survivors from finishing a generator or getting an unhook during the Dream Transition, but that could be easily fixed nowadays with the Incapacitated status effect. Or it could have been fixed back then by giving it something similar to Madness 3, which, unlike the Incapacitated status effect, was a thing in the Old DBD.
I know we have confirmation that Freddy is not getting his old power back, and for that I'm truly sorry. I really did the best I could for him. But the sleep mechanic itself should be the same as the one he used to have. From my own proposal, this is what I'd like to see:
Pull survivors into the Dream World
-Survivors who are awake do not see The Nightmare.
-Once targeted by The Nightmare’s power, survivors enter the Dream Transition for 7 seconds.
-During the Dream Transition Survivors can see glimpses of The Nightmare and they suffer from the Incapacitated status effect.
-When the Dream Transition Lapse, the Survivor is pulled into the Dream World.
Even without the 50% slowdown or the aura-reading, the "Pull in Dream" mechanic is a perfect fit for him, in my honest opinion as a long time Freddy main.

Wouldn't a gen timer buff and an extra gen time nerf cancel each other?

Where is Claudette?
She is a really popular survivor.

As survivor I struggle against killers who are extremely oppressive in chase, such as Xeno or Nemesis. I'm used to a Dead by Daylight where the majority of the killer roster could be looped in the regular manner. That was the way I learned to play DBD, that is gameplay I love.
So if I play against characters who render every tile, pallet and window useless, I don't really know what I am supposed to do.
As killer, I struggle against 360s. I find the sudden change in direction to be very disorienting.

My favorite character in the game, no matter if I am playing him or against him. Seeing Freddy is always fun!

Yes.
So much so that, before his release, I had never disconnected from a game out of dislike towards a character. I really don't like doing that, because it hurts my teammates and they have nothing to do with my likes / dislikes towards killers and their powers.
I had a perfect record… until Wesker was added to the game.
I dislike this character just as much as I disliked the Original Legion.

I just started playing him since the anniversary as part of my Killer Expansion (playing more than 2 Killers)
I even bought him the police outfit.

Just tunnel me. That way I can find another match, hopefully against someone who is fun to play against.

For the OP, if they do go that route we'd also like voice lines to be optional or minimal. Nick is funny but hearing everyone after so long of silence is jarring to us.
…I'll resort to the old reliable:
