Could anyone help me with a problem I'm having? I started playing dbd again today, every time I click on the battle pass and the cutscene in the new episode starts, the game freezes and I have to close it in the task manager, sometimes it happens when the game is loading too, I've already tried contacting the support but the bot that responds is useless

    have you updated the game?

Hello reader! I hope to take you on a thought journey that is hopefully as fun to read and it is to write. 😁

    Intro

DBD is one of the most interesting and unique games I know. I've played all kinds of video games since I was 5 across multiple platforms, and the mind games and mechanics of DBD are the most unique of any games I've ever played. There is no game experience that I can really equate to it...

    The Basic M1 Gameplay loop

A thought that has been bubbling in my mind for a long time is the disparity of killers such as Trapper, Myers and Pig compared to the likes of Nurse, Huntress and Blight... and after a while of thinking about these killers, the main differences generally speaking between higher level killers vs. lower ones seems to be the difference of the reliance on mind games vs. mechanical skill...

I propose that Survivor and low tier Killers rely more on mind game skill expression, rather than mechnical skill expression...

What I mean by this is, your typical basic m1 killer gameplay loop is to induce the survivor to make a mistake in order for the killer to close distance and land a hit. The key skills here for both sides are positioning and predicition, and something that is hard earned through experience... the knowledge of tiles structures, tile and window spawns and how to chain tiles together, accounting for the potential perks in play, this is all paramount, but ultimately all of it boils down fundamentally to positioning and prediction.

I would argue the actual inputs required to do this are not very difficult/complicated, i.e. are not high in mechanical skill expression... and I would argue that survivor by and large is not full of opportunities for much mechanical skill expression... while hugging tight to corners and inputting your direcrions accurately for fast faults are factors, your decision making is the primary tool with which you survive in DBD.

How mechanical skill expression differs in practise

How this manifests is the likes Trapper have little in the way of mechanical skill expression to level the playing field, and become notoriously hard to elevate with buffs without making them obnoxious... against Survivors who are wise to the mind games, optimally positioning at tiles, and rarely making mistakes, there is little Trapper can do about it... there is no mechanical skill he can employ to swing the mind game back in his favour... all he has are traps he places to limit options, which still follow the same principles of positioning, mind games and alike to induce a survivor mistake.

You compare this to someone like Blight, Hillbilly, Huntress or Nurse, these characters each have a lot of mechanical skill. Their mechanical skill creates new mind games for the killer to use, and can even brute force a scenario where it is entirely on the killer to miss instead of anything the survivor can realistically do about it. I'd argue this disparity is most heavily pronounced on the Nurse...

Against Nurse, she still needs mind game skill, but it isn't as heavily required as it is on m1 killers. Survivors still are primarily using the tools of positioning and prediction to defend themselves, however Nurse can use 2 blinks; the first to get close, the second toblink on top and hit the survivor. The survivor has basically no mechanical skill they can employ to avoid this hit... maybe a spin tech, but that's about it... all a survivor can realistically do is position themselves awkwardly and unpredictably to make it so the Nurse needs an absurdly high level of precision to land the hit. This ultimately means it is entirely down to the mechanical precision of the Nurse as to whether she gets a hit or not... her mechnical skill expression can completely subvert the survivors prediction and mind game skill expression, and is something the top tier Nurses can do to run roughshot over even strong survivors.

This is the same for Blight's rushes, Hillbilly's chainsaw dashes, and the accuracy of Huntress hatchets... the ability to use these powers precisely takes a lot of mechanical skill that, swings the mind games heavily back in the killers favour with sufficient mechnical skill.

An interesting set of side cases: Slowdown Killers

This difference of mechanical vs. mind game skill expression creates an interesting problem for balance. Killers like Pinhead, Pig, Freddy, Sadako, etc all universally have high killrates as killers, even though (for the most part) their chases are not strong... there is little in terms of mechnical skill expression they can employ to level the playing field... not to say they don't take skill, but they have to rely on mind games far more to win, and thus end up hitting a pretty concrete upper skill bound...

High level survivors who understand their powers and position/predict well against them can run rings around them with little they can do about it... there is absolutely an upper end to their mechnical skill expression...

However on the other end of the spectrum, the players that don't have those skills as well tuned yet, can easily get overwhelmed and get run over horribly by these killers, because ultimately these killers powers are all about increasing the likelyhood the survivors make a game losing mistake...

The hated characters that lack both... Anti-Loop Killers

Similarly characters that block off loops and get all the benefits of mechnical skill expression, without anywhere near the requirements for precision and mechanical skill expression to achieve it (such as Artist, SM, Knight, etc) get a lot of criticism, even if they aren't strong.

Against these killers there are no mind games to employ, and no mechnical skill expression to force out of them... instead they close areas off while keeping hot in chase, and basically force a hit out of the survivor without really much the survivor can realistically do about it...

Again, positioning and prediction are the survivors tools, and a power that robs them of those tools is not fun for a survivor, especially if it doesn't takes much effort for the killer to do... a great Hillbilly chainsaw is fun to face, because you can make it very hard for Billy to land his hit, so when he does, even if there was nothing you could do to avoid it, it doesn't feel cheap.

Conclusion: So is it OK for lower mechnical skill killers to be low tier?

As a Pig main 🐽, I don't particularly like this thought but...

This leads one to think... is it OK that some killers are stuck in the lower tiers and have this disparity? Newer players go up against them, and they need these kind of killers to learn the basic mechanics of the game. When they get good enough, they start encountering more of the mechanically skillful killers (the dream that is MMR).

The theoretical problem is that should say Trapper be buffed to rival the power of Nurse (say something silly, like invisible traps)... because he lacks mechnical expression in his kit, wouldn't he be getting into the realms of Skull Merchant or Knight style killers? Able to get free damage without much effort by robbing survivors of their prediction and positioning tools juat by using his power as and when?

It seems to me the issue with nerfing upper tier killers and buffing lower tier killers, is to make an upper tier killer weaker you need to limit the potential of their mechnical skill expression... since survivors only have positioning and mind games to combat you, and don't have any equivalent to mechnical skill expression to fight against you with (survivors would need somethimg like being able to burn Nurse out of her blink if they are accurate with a flashlight for example)....

Similarly buffing killers without mechanical skill expression means making then able to deny the survivors mind game tools without having to use any effort to do it...

Does this mean it's actually better that lower tier killers have an upper bound they can't break through?

I'll let you decide, and would be very happy yo read your thoughts... Have a good one 😁🤘

very interesting read and always good to get an insight into these things even as someone who plays exclusively as survivor, it gives me an appreciation of conundrums killers face that I rarely have a chance to think about in the thick of a run of games. It is also interesting to see how the game takes balancing ideas forward - there is no right or wrong with these things, only ideas that who knows will work out or not without testing.

Thanks for your effort and well articulated post!

Hi, I'm writing on behalf of the BBC as part of an initiative with BHVR and their forums to check that all DBD players have TV licenses.

    You cannot escape us.

They should add a TV license enforcement officer as a killer, those guys are ruthless.

    extreme measures!! lol

    IMG_7423.jpeg
  • I only play survivor but I shall say thank you to killers who make the game fun - no, I don’t mean camping or hatch givers, I mean the ones who are involved in the close matches where everyone played well and enjoyed a tense but fun match! Especially the Jump scare Myers - you guys owe me pants lol

I know killers love me too.. They are always after my attention, being considerate and Reading my Aura, Chasing me and trying to get me Hooked.. It’s as if I’m the object of their obsession 😇 But there’s a Plot Twist! Sometimes I get exhausted, give in and say, “ok, will you marry mori me?”

Indeed, nothing builds empathy for the other side, then walking in their shoes regularly. These days I play closer to 60/40 killer and there are evenings where I just play survivor with my DBD friendgroup. Getting tunneled in 3min really isn't fun, but neither is getting BMed or facing unsurmountable odds as killer.

I am often the killers voice in my survivor matches, explaining why he might be mad, while also taking a good portion of the survivors frustration into my killer matches. But my bias will never go away completely, I can calmly getting BMed by the killer and explain his frustration, but 3 bad killer games in a row with survivors who just play extremely efficient without BMing me might drive me to tunneling for a couple of games, till I clear me head and sacrificed a cute survivor and then feel bad and appologize in chat

^_- This game can be so weird.

I only play survivor (it’s not a conceptual thing, but only because I REALLY don’t do handle First person FOV games well) and it’s only after I made killer friends and came to the forums and hearing their thoughts that I’ve been able to empathise more than I could prior.

I understand there is a whole different world from my own with different issues and challenges - I’ll never truly understand because I don’t play killer but I always try to bear this in mind even when I’m getting stomped (a lot and often lol).

Whenever I feel very frustrated after being tunnelled or camped, I’ll try to contextualise this. When I get bm’d, I try to come back to the forums and hearing (mostly lol) rational and fair voices amongst killers like you and others that helps me remember it’s not all killers like that - and that not all survivors are toxic either.

It is a game where someone has to kill and the ones being killed will feel disheartened if it happens often and the ones who have to kill feeling likewise when they don’t. But it’s nice to see the personalities through conversations and viewpoints - even if both sides won’t always agree on a perspective, it can provide a holistic view of something.

  • Hope this worked for you guys. Please do post details if it did, so it can be reference for others who may have issues - thanks :)

I personally feel attached and empathy for all my switch kin (and other platforms of course)

  • Hi both, I would suggest using password reset function (on BHVR cross progression website) and trying your usually used emails including the one used for your switch account possibly to see which one you might have registered with. This happened to me the first time but thankfully I only ever use a handful of emails for registering to stuff and found the one it was connected to.

in your email client, type in search option for: Dead by Daylight, BHVR or ZENDESK to see if you have the original email you might have registered with (see screenshots)

    IMG_1836.jpeg

    IMG_1834.jpeg Facetune_25-07-2024-09-04-13.jpeg

And/or just keep checking different email address in the forgot password option in the website:

    IMG_1829.jpeg IMG_1831.jpeg

this might not be a BHVR issue, and potentially the same as forgetting a registered email.

Additionally, please make sure (important step) that the game is updated on all devices.

However in the worst case scenario, contact support:

    https://support.deadbydaylight.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

I’m sure they’ll do what they can but please do the above steps first as this solved it for me.

  • I think that’s a fair idea and worth testing in any case!

    @Akumakaji said:

I'll leave my two cents on the matter. Facing a good and coordinated SWF can be one of the most dismal experience in DBD, if feels like your work is cut out for you at every turn, wherever you turn to, the survivors are already pre-running and the moment you do so, someone jumps on the gen on your back, putting extreme pressure on you.

And when you try to pick someone up, someone runs with background Player from out of Nowhere to flashbang you and you never feel save, or you get send to a map with brutal locker setups and 4 Head Ons, etc.

But (here comes to positive but) this aren't the norm of SWFs. You so often have duos that ate clearly marked as such, like having matching names or cosmetics and they often go out of their way to protect one another, playing suboptimal just to see their mate to safety and when one dies the other might give up, to follow them.

Me and my own SWFs, we are definitely not comp team level, we fool around a lot, slap each others butt's while on gens or whatever. We get the occasional save, but we aren't that super oppressive most of the time.

I would love if we could somehow limit the power of be comp team SWFs while leaving he others alone, and I think I have an idea how to do that. Mind you, limiting something is so often equaled to "punishing people to play with their friends", but so many multiplayer games impose certain limitations that aren't seen as "punishment". I think because it was unchecked since forever people are unreasonable allergic to any ideas.

Imagine if in a squad shooter like Overwatch you could run 5 tanks, that would be effective but probably also unfun and unbalanced to face, so that's limited.

And in the same vein, I would limit SWFs power a bit, without being unreasonable. What if we would limit perks to one or max. 2 per team? The hallmarks of a comp team are the plan and often repeated perks, like 4 Resilience, 4 Unbreakable, 4 DHs. If you limited the copies of the same perks by premades you would reign in the comp teams a little bit, but normal casual SWFs would not feel it at all or maybe just a little bit.

In my own regular SWF we have someone with Blastmine and Headon/Quick n Quiet, another one with Flashbang and some healing perk, another sirh some unhooking perks. Everyone has their own fun thing to do and we got really double perks. Just a thought.

  • @Yggleif said:

The idea you need to be comp player to beat a SWF is laughable, if that were true I'm wasting my talent in pubs and need to join DBD league immediately. Fact is if you have good game sense and are mechanically good at your killer 99% of teams SWF or not arn't a problem.

I say this as someone who plays Hag, a killer that literally relies on survivors screwing up to actually do anything and I still 3k/4k the vast majority of the time and that's not because I'm the best Hag that ever was but because people arn't comp players even if they're in a SWF. Most of them are people that are mediocre at DBD playing with their friends that are also mediocre at DBD just having fun meanwhile people on here would have a meltdown at those people using discord while playing.

Instead of complaining about people having friends I genuinely believe it's a better use of your time to get better at killer and there are plenty of resources online to help you do that.

I dream of the day I might someday reach the heady heights of mediocrity lol

  • I can confirm it won’t activate if typed on steam but will transfer instantly and seamlessly over when typed into Switch and the when you go back into the game on Steam ☺️✨

Top secret strategy in discord discussions:

    IMG_1822.jpeg

    ..or more likely:

    Facetune_24-07-2024-11-16-04.jpeg

the reality in many cases is that people who have played solos a long time make in game friends they then play causally and regularly with and sometimes become good friends with and want to continue playing - not to destroy killers with evil plans, but to avoid the pain of solo and laugh and joke with regardless of outcome.

  • @Shroompy said:

First of all, it doesn't take a comp player to take out your average SWF. Believe it or not 99% of SWFs arent comp players.

Second of all, punishing people simply to play with friends is and always will be a bad idea.

And finally, killers knowing who theyre going against in the lobby already shouldnt be a thing.

I personally have never understood why killers can see the lobby prestige and item load out. I’ve heard the arguments that killer needs to be able to prepare against the team but, would that not also cut both ways?

I just think it would be more fair all round and lead to less lobby dodging if neither survivors or killers could see each other in lobby beforehand.

Ironically nintendo might have that title but when it comes to the switch. Steam when it released the steamdeck showed how far they actually coulda went. Especially the steamdeck OLED which can do dbd 1080p at 90fps. Meanwhile the switch can't even do 1/3rd of that at 720p. Switch's only real advantage is exclusivity because of how Nintendo is.

    https://us.v-cdn.net/6030815/uploads/PJIGRHY0J1G8/20240526-074421.jpg

Honestly, I’ve been amazed at how well the game runs on steam deck - FAR beyond my expectations!

I’ve also tested playing it via steam link from deck to my phone and it was buttery smooth with not even a hint of lag! Having the option to play it on a compact and light device like my phone while the steam deck charges or something is utterly mind blowing.

  • My Nintendo Switch was the only platform I played on until I moved to Steam Deck (in the last few weeks, and now transferred with cross/p).

I am probably the very definition of a casual gamer (never played pvp - unless Mario kart lol, and never really played FPS except Goldeneye) so I couldn’t appreciate just how good the game looked - and later played on other consoles and platforms until I saw content creators (probably after 7 months playing). I mentioned in another thread too, but I played the first year of DBD with no sound (because I wasn’t serious enough to purchase Bluetooth headset + thin walls in my room at the time + moaning and groaning characters = sounds like a naughty video lol).

Now that I have more experience in the game and have seen from YouTube etc and through forums what the game REALLY looks like and the many customisable aspects and settings that make a big difference, I’m even more amazed at how some console players pull off the things they do (sadly, not me - I’m a perennial potato 😅).

I have gotten used to controller and also handheld so my SteamDeck provides that comforting familiarity but the graphics and performance are almost shockingly better than my switch. I’ll still remember my DBD gaming on switch fondly though ☺️

I had zero problems doing it and everything transferred smoothly. The only "hiccup" I had and this wasn't even a bug, it just wasn't how I saw this happening was that my Huntress, Oni, Nemesis, David, and Leon had higher prestiges on my Playstation over my Switch which had all the legacy portraits on them, Playstation didn't, and as a result I lost their legacy portraits because the wrong account transferred to the level with the legacy portrait being lower. Which, not gonna lie, that sucks because I've always thought of them as cosmetic so I should get them back, not sure if that's possible though.

Another thing that went wrong, again not a bug just me not thinking, I logged into my steam account first which oooooooh boy that was a mistake. So for me, I don't use my steam account and the equipped loadouts, cosmetics, charms, badge, and banner goes off the first platform you log into. All your cosmetics still transfer, it's simply what's equipped as far as what I'm talking about (reiterating for everyone who needs assurance on that, all my cosmetics were there, just unequipped). So now, I'm sitting here reequipping all of my builds and cosmetics because I did that. WHOOPS. There should be a disclaimer for that, if you want certain loadouts and cosmetics to be equipped the moment you log back in, to log back in on the account they're already equipped on. For all those not thinking like I was BECAUSE THAT JUST MAKES SENSE. WHY DID I THINK OTHERWISE.

To get to the end path, you do not need to own any DLC. To save all of the challenges you need to own The Doctor (i think on some platforms Doctor is not free)

    Yellow Circle = Save

As always, if someone finds something better feel free to post i here and i'll add it to the OP.

    FAQ

    • I'm new at the game, should I still do this?
      • Maybe. If you tend to have specific things you want to spend your bloodpoints on, you are better off just spending them on what you want. You would generally do this if you want to max out the new survivor/killer when they are released. Generally they are released between level 3 and 4 being released.
    • Why do this?
      • Since the game only allows you to hold 2 million bloodpoints at any given time, this is a way to store extra bloodpoints for a later date. This is useful if you want to save bloodpoints for a later event or chapter.
      • Doing this with the first 3 levels + level 4 of the previous tome, capping your bloodpoints to 2 million, and saving daily challenges, should allow you to max out the killer or survivor to p3 and probably get the other to p1 or p2 before even playing a single game when the new chapter releases.
    • What do I do?
      • Following the map above, just follow the red line, then complete and turn in the challenge. For the challenges that have yellow circles, do the challenge but DO NOT turn in/complete it. This lets you have the challenge completed and ready to be collected when the new content, or whatever you are saving for releases.
    • Do I miss out on rift fragments doing this?
      • Only if you don't turn the challenges in during the rift. Typically since the new content releases between levels 3 and 4. You can at least get the fragments for the first 3 levels. And if you need the fragments for level 4, you can do those and typically you'll only miss out on saving 500k bloodpoints in most cases as level 4 typically lets you save around that much.
    • Is this definitely the most points I can save?
      • I think it is, and if you are reading this, I have already set upon this path myself. Sometimes I make mistakes though, so if you find a better one, please post it in this thread and I'll add it to OP. In the event that someone finds a better one, I will place theirs above mine and make a note/credit of it. I will still keep mine on the thread though as often once you have started down the path you can't really change or you'll end up losing out on even more points.

Thanks for your hard work @Reinami its no small task to work these things out and then compile and share them - much appreciated on behalf of everyone 🍰✨

Got it! It was a off account. Good to go. Also steam deck OLED was probably my best investment ever. Got it when the KH games came to steam. And it's been running like a dream on dbd.

Nice one!! Really glad it’s sorted - hopefully any time now things will happen!

Also I love KH and am thinking of getting it on deck too! So much nostalgia for this series! I bought Dragon Quest XI (even though I own and have 100% on switch lol) and it looks and plays beautifully!
