To identify a safe structure is pretty simple. The longer the loop, the safer. This is based on how impactful could be the killer changing direction in which he is running the loop.

For example the classic pallet near the window of foundry the killer can stand in the middle of the opposite side of the pallet, run side to side to bait a double vault, and then he could run around and lunge before the third vault animation ends. Also keep in mind that this pallet is safer before droping it because it could give you an easy path to another structure.

Bigger structures are safer, like jungle gyms. That because you have access to a window (usually), they are big and they have long corners. Corners are safe elements because you can stand in the joint of the two walls and watch the killer coming with the 3rd person camera.

So as you run into a loop you start doing a check list, the more checks the safer the structure is:

    1. Is it long enough to avoid vault baits?
    2. Has corners to extend the loop if the killer try to mind game wrong?
    3. Has windows?
    4. Has another pallet or structure near?
    5. Both sides of the pallet have an escape rute?
    6. Acceptable wall height? (Depends on the killer, high walls against huntress to avoid hatchets or low against legion to avoid mind games)

There are more questions that you can add, but with these I think you can identify most of them pretty easily.

Another way to improve is progress from looping to chaining structures. You loop less on each structure but use more structures going from one to another to move the killer around the map as he is chasing you. Pallets should be dropped to cancel bloodlust but you can cancel without it (baiting a huntress hatchet for example), so learning to extend pallets as much as possible is the goal.

You can improve in baits and techs too, faking a vault or a fall can give you a free 10% of a gen easily. Also forcing killers to break safe pallets can be useful (bait your escape and then return to the structure for another loop until the killer breaks it), if the killer don't break the pallet should be because he thinks it's unsafe, you have to prove him wrong.

Streamers usually explain some of these points during streams multiple times, all the time. I don't know if you have some problems understanding part of it, so any doubt i would be glad to try to answer. I have less hours played than you tho, the difference is a ton.

This is a terrific answer, thanks! The steamer Uncharted__ is particularly good at explaining exactly what he does and why. However, he does it as he's playing, so it's quick and I lose track of the visual component (like, he might be running and by the time my brain processes the explanation, the pallet or loop is gone from the screen)

I will probably print this little guide out and put it near my monitor so I can read it between matches (I know, OK Boomer!) :)

Also, having fewer hours doesn't mean you don't know your stuff. Some people are just better at the game than others, and that's a wonderful thing

Well DS is annoying for the killer because good Killers van still het hit by IT even they dont tunnel. But running exhaustion perk is not toxic, so is a med kit. And exhaustion perks Will also help you to learn loops, like lithe and dead hard. The only big toxic thing survivors can do is a key. DS is annoying but if you are getting tunneled a lot I suggest you use it.

I let the skill check pass if I've had a chance to work on a gen, heal, go through a chest, do a totem, etc.

I only use DS if they're downing me off the hook and throwing me right back on again. If they leave for someone else then find me 50 seconds later (or whatever), I don't use it

Also, thank you for the suggestion!

  • @LALYTHIA said:

Start using all the perks available to you. Nothing about them is impolite. Killers are not doing the same for you. You want to be polite? Don't flashlight them when it's unnecessary and don't teabag at palettes or the exit gate. Otherwise, you do you.

Cool! I've used a variety of perks, including DS, and they sure do keep me in the game a little longer, so I'll rotate those in again. Hopefully I can learn to loop better too from some focused video tutorials

  • @BigTimeGamer said:

“I don't usually bring in DS, a way to heal myself, an exhaustion perk, or items.”

I don’t understand this, DS and such were added to combat camping, tunneling etc so not using them is accepting the risk.

as to getting good, I just watched a lot of Zubat and learned through him how to better loop and play so when I see someone waste a pallet I cry inside now

Sure, it's accepting the risk, which is why I hope to improve without using them.

I don't mind supplementing skill with strong perks, but I don't want to rely on the perks at the expense of developing better skills, either. Hopefully that makes better sense. :)

I've been writing down the suggestions so far, thank you all!

Tbh OP, a LOT of survivors need to "git gud", way too many are simply carried by DS, BT, and especially DH.

Looping etc, idk yeah you have to learn that a bit more, and being just aware of the map and tile sets, there are plenty of vids on the web showing you how to loop those and what to watch out for.

As for being camped or tunneled, eh, who cares, if a killer does not want to actually play the game, just die and move on to a match where the killer does, same goes vice versa (although in the killers shoes you have to AFK and hope survivors just do their objectives.)

I don't mind being insta-downed, slugged, camped, tunneled, or moried, in general. I'd just like to live a bit longer in my matches so I'm not getting killed under 8k so often. It happens about 3 in every 5 matches, lately.

I'll try looking up specific videos, rather than just watching general streams--- that's a good idea!

Which is fine, but the OP shouldn't then call the results of their miscalculation a punishment as though there is something wrong with the perk. This was counterable and a more mindful killer would have done this differently to reap the full benefit of their downs.

I completely understand what you mean, and you're not wrong. I just have a different feeling about it, I think.

I can understand why they feel like it's a punishment, though. When I've healed someone and helped finish a gen, then get downed and STILL have a chance to use DS, it even feels cheap to me and I'm the one running it.

  • It's hard to calculate that 60 seconds, I think. Survivors get the benefit of a timer in the HUD, but the Killer has to rely on an inner stopwatch.

When someone is really busy within that minute (like OP was), it's easy to miscalculate the actual time passed, especially when you're pushing the 45 second mark, or so.

Sure, we can say 'pick up the first-downed', but it's hard to fault someone for being 10 or 15 seconds off their estimation

  • I've found Kindred doesn't help me get unhooked so much as I'd hoped, but it's handy to do the unhooking and get a general sense of what the killer is doing immediately after a teammate is hooked.

I don't play very well, unfortunately, so when I'm alone (without SWFing with my wife), I tend to get tunneled or mori'd out of matches before I even earn 10k and often only 5k. It's discouraging to wait 10+ minutes for that, so I play Killer instead

  • This upcoming PTB seems like it will be more balance-oriented, which is natural given the changes we saw leading up to this.

I hadn't played Survivor for a month, tried again on Saturday and got: a disconnecting Deathslinger, a tunneling wraith who killed me out at only 5k BP, a camping, iri head, ebony mori huntress, an average Demogorgon game, and an ebony mori Demo game. Both ebony moris tunneled us off the hook and killed after first hook, of course.

If revising abusive loops and making maps more manageable in size improves this kind of unappealing gameplay, I am all for it. I miss playing Survivor and having fun in a match before I get killed (And maybe actually earning more than 10k).

I'm playing killer in these days to do the challenge of tome 2, today I happened 4 games of ######### ... they make me toxic by trolling and debugging me, they have nerfed the charges of the cassettes but no nserve to nothing ######### continue to ruin the game on the killer side making your life hell, I do not pretend to always win by killing everyone, but at least I pretend that you do a clean game where games don't end in 5 seconds! in the last 2 games for the stealing and the outburst I also started to insult them in chat because in my opinion these types of subjects believe that the killer is a nabbo, when I am convinced that these cabbage psychopaths playing hours and hours mentally calculate the tepo away from the window and the animations of the survior and the killer to be able to always sneak away from my shots! is absurd! then when I play survivor the killer always has the hook close and my teammates are always nabbi who don't even make a gen! there is crazy..it will be because i will be italian and we italians are unlucky ... but it is not possible that in a game where the survivors should be afraid and terror, you find yourself being trolled and gen rushing to ######### all the time, and ridiculous RIDICLE! and Dbd is not even a difficult game that you say which keys it takes to learn are only 2 commands in the caper cross yet, as usual there are always rude and uncivilized players who must always ruin the fun of the other players ... I know both these words that I am writing will not help even because I don't think I'm the only one here in this community..toxic who continually complains about the imbalance of the game, as if I were shouting wolf wolf but nobody wants to listen to me .. so I conclude by saying that if it were for me the repair speed of the generators must be slowed down somehow otherwise the killer does not have time to think about a strategy, and on the survivor side the killer must give the surv a minimum of time to be able to play because otherwise being killed immediately is not fun.

I'm so sorry you're this level of frustrated. It's painful in Italy right now, and getting gen rushed and bad manners from people isn't going to help you decompress.

Maybe take a break from playing, for a little while? Your assessments aren't wrong, but it takes time to fix so many issues (maps, generators, etc.)

Please stay healthy & take good care of yourself!

  • @NursesBootie said:

    Can i get a TL:DR please? That' a WoT.

TL:DR: They are very frustrated with gen rushing, toxicity, & bad manners while playing Killer.

TL:DR +: Toolbox nerfs did nothing; Survivors don't experience an appropriate level of fear from encountering the Killer

  • I think part of the survivors' punishment is in the miniscule amount of bloodpoints you get for rushing and leaving without performing your due diligence, at least.

Some people don't care, of course, and I'm not saying it's right, fair, or what have you. I'm just guessing maybe that's part of the 'balance' rationale?

  • I had this happen when the joystick was going. It felt normal to use, and when I'd first start a session, there was nothing unusual.

After I played a little while (maybe about 30 minutes?), the camera would start drifting upward and I'd fight to center & steady it. It would drift without me even touching the controller, sometimes

Purchasing a new controller solved the problem and it hasn't occurred again since. Hopefully you don't need to buy a new one---I know they're not cheap!

  • I find Bloodhound useful on PS4 when I'm playing killers other than Doc. I have my TV as bright as I can get it, but those maps are brutal to track on.

Of course, I knew lots of people may not want to run it, but it does help me in the corn hellrealms

  • I get so many gen grabs with bone clapper + ghost add-ons. It's about the most fun you can buy for 7k BPs.

Wraith is really fun to use, though he can be easy to bully if you're not a great killer player or have crazy-good survivors (or both, RIP me)

  • Actually, it improved my Overwatch game a bit because I learned the value of stealth and looking behind me more. I got more eliminations, especially environmental kills, and became less susceptible to sneaky Reapers crawling up my bum.

  • I ended up taking DS off about a week after trying it out.

The amount of times I was actually hard tunneled and needed DS were miniscule compared to the number of games where it never came into play, or came into play well after the killer moved on and it wasn't tunneling anymore. It's too broad and permissive a perk and needs to be fixed.

I don't know if an ebony mori is the right fix, but if it's your preferred method, go for it. I understand why killers get frustrated with DS, though. It's too easy to abuse and punish people who are playing fairly and doing nothing wrong.

  • My wife carries me into red ranks every reset, without fail. There are several others here who play DBD with their wives.

Also, I follow several women who stream DBD---about a 60/40 split on my Twitch follows, I'd say. The game seems to attract all kinds of people from all sorts of places, it's nice

At least be honest salty killer, tier I is immune to spine chill. smh.

Tier 1 used to be immune to Spine Chill, but not since the Oblivious status effect was incorporated.

Personally, if I'm a dick to other survivors, they had to be really nasty co-players; I've never been a dick to a killer. Honestly, I have 400 survivors I've blacklisted and will lobby dodge. I've never bothered to write down a killer's name for a mori, sent them hate, or anything like that.

I know it seems like all of us are dicks, but we're not. But...a lot are, unfortunately. Some of us appreciate everyone, though, whether it be killers or other survivors just trying to play the game.

  • For PS4, I've had this happen on multiple occasions before the 3.6.0 patch, but not since (yet).

  • I have Major Depressive Disorder (Moderate-to-Serious). I take medicine for it and most of the time, it works great and I have fun and don't DC no matter what happens in-game. What's the point?

DBD is a great help, because when I start getting uncharacteristically irritable and DCing for something stupid I did, or for a hard tunnel, I'll stop DBD and play Sims instead, then wait two or three days for my additional medicine to do its thing.

In short, it's almost always me being mad at myself for something stupid I did, or because my brain chemistry is out of whack. When normal, I see no reason to DC and have fun most games, and even laugh at a facecamp, stupid action I did, or a hard tunnel

  • Doc. Even before his re-work, he was my go-to. I found him easy to use and had a good feel for his abilities and strengths right away. I love his look and all his cosmetics too. He's just my dude

  • I'm not concerned with streamsniping overall and wasn't trying to start talk on the subject.

I only mentioned it peripherally. No need to tag me for further discussion on it.

  • Exxodus's 'exposed' game mechanic idea above seems appealing. It could help punish careless or callous survivor teammates, then might also affect their Altruism points and possibly their rank---the game is very unforgiving of unsafe unhooks. Add in the killer's incentive to go after the unhooker for the equally easy down and...yeah.

The downside might be dying on first hook more often because no one is willing to commit to the unhook, but hello, Kindred + Deliverance, I guess? I don't know. It's hard to offer an attractive alternative to hard tunneling because the tactic can be devastating to potatoes like me. And unfortunately, there are a lot of us.

  • I thought mori spamming was an offense, though? Blows my mind how stream sniping can't be an offense, that's just blatant cheating. But I guess the idea is that the streamer is choosing to publicly stream, so streameat emptor?

  • I'm about 80/20 with the survivor side being dominant. I enjoy both, but play killer for the BP so there's no emotional attachment to how I perform.

  • I forget about Adam a lot, sadly. He's such a neat character and has fun perks too, but I just...forget.

I play Ace, Quentin, and Tapp all the time, and Jeff quite a bit too, so I don't forget about them.

  • Ohhhh, I get you now! Sorry, it took me a minute to see where we were going.

I think those changes would be an improvement, but I'd still be reluctant to use Vigil, even with those buffs. Because, like Milo explained, so many status effects are permanent until you change a health state, or a piggy party hat is removed, or some other requirement is met.

With the changes to Doc's Madness coming out, a revised Vigil still wouldn't be that helpful. Since there's no decay to his Madness with this change, it will be permanent until the 'snap out of it' requirement is met.

If Clown or Huntress or Hag are hindering/mangling/blindness, etc. with add-ons, it's kind of handy, but that's rare enough that I wouldn't want to use up a perk slot still. There's no way to make Freddy stop making your Oblivious while you're asleep, or to rush Myers out of tier one, and so on.

I think Vigil would be cool if it could help your actions along, like wake up faster and wake up others faster, or remove that multiple waking up penalty. Also to snap out of it faster, and that sort of thing. It needs some love though, that's for sure.

  • A lot! When I lunge with Doc's big stick, I tend to lean forward. I also move left or right to duck flashlights, lol.

  • Wiggle is extremely responsive on PS4, for me.

Using the joystick for wiggle can be done gently and still achieve the desired result. Also, it doesn't strain your joints and is reliable..

Pressing buttons (for me) is more prone to error and lack of recognition in-game.

This advantage does not support the Broken effect. Broken, Madness, and Oblivious no effect support.

I'm aware of this and didn't see the need to mention what Vigil already doesn't cover. It's entirely moot since those status effects aren't even on the table in the first place.

Again, the reason I don't run Vigil much is because it's too limited & conditional. I only use it to help relieve tier 1 exhaustion perks, and even that I do sparingly because even that is conditional.

  • I use Vigil occasionally, if I know my wife is running a tier one exhaustion perk.

It can be handy if the killer is using add-ons that cause status effects like hemorrhage, blindness, mangled, etc., but those don't happen often enough for Vigil to be consistently useful (for me, anyway).

But despite needing some help, it's still better than Second Wind!

    https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/135600/ds

They don’t have enough 2nd chance perks. DS is much needed at 60 seconds. You making this statement right here pretty much proves killers are able to prevent people from playing the game. You’re telling me that the guy got off the hook less than 60 seconds ago and you’re already on him again? And that seems fair to him right? He’s having a lot of fun not being able to regroup with his team or work on objectives once again because you’re just All over him. Yeah okay. You’re making yourself look bad complaining about DS once again like every other bad player out there. Just find someone else, this is a GAME after all. You don’t write the rules just because you’re the killer. Just do your best to keep them all on their toes and if they make it they make it, if they don’t they don’t. But just use deer stalker and slug him until the minute wears off lol there’s always another way. Just because you can’t get your easy kill you whine? But why should the game let you rehook people that fast? Faster than 1 minute? Is that guy enjoying the game? Or did they make this game to please the killer only? Hmm.

I think 50 - 60 seconds can be pretty productive. I was happy with my match, and the others that were similar. I didn't feel victimized, despite the re-hook within 60 seconds, and the time I spent was solid points.

In my 55ish seconds, I gave some quick heals (tiny part of a health state) and popped a gen that was 30 - 40% done when we started (wife had Prove Thyself). We were started off toward another gen when Huntress downed me, and only because I ran into her.

This person was not hard tunneling or doing anything but minding their business and playing the game. Nevertheless, the DS skill check came up and gave an opportunity to punish a player who did nothing wrong.

I think the 60 seconds timer is good if you're being hard tunneled, but the conditions for DS are too broad and can penalize a killer who isn't meeting that hard tunnel criteria even remotely.

  • On Friday, I tried DS for the very first time in two years. I'm a survivor main of roughly 1,000 hours, a baby killer of maybe 20 - 30 hours.

DS is terrible. Sure, it does what it's supposed to (stuns a tunneler), but its abuse potential is ridiculous.

I had a Huntress who dutifully went after the David who unhooked me, so I went on a gen with my wife. We popped it and Huntress returned. A bad guess on my part, and I walked into Huntress going around the combine. She downs me (I was still injured, working on the gen using Resilience).

According to my DS ticker, it's about 55 seconds in, only a tiny sliver left. I just let the skill check go, because there is no way that's tunneling. None. This person was perfectly respectful. I refuse to punish someone for meeting their goals and being a polite co-player.

There is so much potential to abuse the stupid thing. I can totally see why killers hate it, and it should have a deactivation condition. This person deserved to be DS'd because their internal 60 seconds timer was off by 5 seconds? Because I made a bad directional choice? No way.

I've kept it on because legit tunneling is really bad right now, but there have been several matches where I've let DS pass because I can't consider their conduct as actual tunneling, just like with that Huntress.

The intent of DS isn't bad, but the perk needs another re-work.

  • I see Killer & Survivor non-default cosmetics in an overwhelming majority of matches on PS4. Some may be prestige garments, some may be Rift, but most are from the store. I don't know if it's a difference in platform culture, maybe?

  • Deathslinger reminds me a lot of Eldred Jonas from the Dark Tower series, right down to the bad leg. He was my favorite character and I'm pretty delighted to have Deathslinger join the roster, even if his abilities are difficult to master. It'll be fun just to try something a little different, and I am so stoked for the map and his overall aesthetic.

I think the hard part is that horror is such an individualized taste, what scares or awesome one person falls flat with someone else. So while some of us Weird West/Deadlands niche fans are happy, others are underwhelmed.

I can understand what you mean, though, as the struggle mechanic with his harpoon seems a bit underpowered and prone wasting time.

  • StreamDad_

    RunningMan37

    FunGoose

    ArchdruidDrey

    BattleMick

Goose & Drey are particularly good at explaining what they're doing & why, and will answer questions about their approach if you ask them. They are good if you're looking for a more educational aspect. RunningMan takes killer requests almost all day, a lot of the time, and is nicely laid back

    • Hillbilly (it's so fun to get chased by one, even though I go down like a sack of potato every time)
    • Huntress (also fun chases, trying to dodge hatchets, and i'm always in awe of a great throw)
    • Plague (because I'm a 45 year old child, let's be honest, so the vomiting makes me laugh)

Doc is also right up there, probably tied with Plague.

  • Spine Chill is wonderful, but if I run it too much, I get lazy and it becomes a crutch.

I stop looking around, relying on it to warn me. Because I'm not looking, I miss where the killer is coming from and walk right into them.

Granted, I'm incredibly inattentive, so other players may not run into this issue

  • It's not supposed to, I don't think. I run Kindred III a lot and have had a couple Insidious campers fool me while my attention was divided.

Went into the shack to get a person out of the basement (because no Bubba aura was showing nearby), but he was right on the stairs.

  • I've actually been playing killer more, lately. I never used Ruin, so my play style hasn't been affected. Most times, I don't realize a person has BT or DS until the match is over, so it's business as usual. 2k - 4k, mostly, and that's fine. 0k is fine

Playing survivor has been much less fun, with noticeable increases in camping, tunneling, and slugging. Add that to the same trolling, sandbagging rando teammates I've always had and it's longer waits for shorter, uglier matches.

That's caused me to switch (for now), but I'm having a lot more fun.

  • I've had people bring in a mori for me just because I was Quentin---any reason is a valid reason. You bring in your ebony and have fun!

Forget those guys messaging you, they're being poor sports, sending you crap after the match

  • I'm okay with it. I die there nearly every match and it's huge, but that's ok.

  • Quentin and Jeff, with Tapp a close third

  • This situation me bonkers, even as a survivor.

I can't count the number of times I've been one of the last two and been sacrificed first just because I won't sit on my thumb and wait for the other person to do something. I know they won't, I mean, sometimes they surprise, but mostly not.

I've spectated and watched survivors wait until the killer DCs, and it happens more often than it should. Bad survivors three-gen themselves even at purple and red ranks (I'm not exempt, although I try to pay attention & avoid this), then won't touch any of the three that are left.

  • I find it dull to play killer, so I main survivor. Also, my wife and I play together so survivor is our only option.

For me, killer is a monotony of find-chase-down-hook, find-chase-down-hook, like I could waltz to it. The way I play survivor engages my thinking in a different way. I have to think about where I want to run, what gens I want to do, how to stay hidden, hunt for totems, unhook, heal, try to play last minute hero, and a variety of other things. Usually I switch perks every two matches, so I'm in a constant state of adapting and reconfiguring how I operate.

When I do play killer, I prefer M1 killers because I have to give additional thought to where I'm going and what I'm doing.

  • Gens go too fast right now, even without toolboxes or perks to help.

My wife and I intentionally spend the first 60 seconds of a match (approximately) looking for totems now, just to allow killers time to traverse the maps, set-up, etc. because we know if we go right on two gens, it'll go too fast.

Sometimes one of us is insta-spotted and we can't, but at least it's an early chase and hook to have pressure.

We don't mind doing it this way, but gameplay style isn't a fix, that's for sure

  • Some of the most fun interactions I've had in-game have come from everyone being slugged.

One was our cult of four slugged strangers crawling in a circle around Trapper's ankles. He watched us for a little while, then started spinning in a circle too and looked like a gameshow prize.

Another was just me & my wife slug racing to designated points on the map while Myers started blankly at a generator for four minutes, but the entertainment value was real. He was probably just AFK for the bleed-out, but the blank staring was nicely in-character

Sure, we screwed up colossally on both occasions, but who cares? Four minutes, next match, the end. No big deal.

  • I'm a Doctor main and play probably 60 - 80% of my matches with him (before re-work too), but I'm not afraid to switch it up and play the others, even if it means 0k. Shape, Legion, Plague, and Trapper are especially fun for me

  • No, of course not. I just didn't want to dismiss the OP's post out-of-hand. It seemed to me there were valid reasons for them to post about it.

Have a good day & many escapes, @Johnny_XMan!
