If it were me, I'd find it odd to make a character gay when i myself had no intention of making them gay beforehand. I'd make a new character instead of randomly making them gay to have more representation in my media. Whether I can expand their lore to make it make sense or not.
I also am not a fan of unnecessary romantic plot points. Straight or gay. Another game I played had that and I just didn't like it, felt forced and it was a straight one too.
How do you know what their intention was at the beginning, and why does it matter so much to you? You have had answers to the 'points' you're making and you don't seem to be grasping it - just say you're mad at a character being confirmed to be gay and move on, it's honestly cringeworthy how you refuse to be educated on this.

I think you want to assume that about me for having a dissenting opinion about this, but of course that is just my opinion. Don't forget, less is more. ;)
Until I get an official confirmation about the rest of the roster then I am going to assume they are straight. And again, that is just how I feel about it. Hope you don't have a problem with that especially over fictional characters. :)
So you want to assume all the other characters are straight, but you also don't think representation or mentioning sexuality of characters in a video game is necessary. Which is it? You contradict yourself. What a mess.

Because its not necessary and I don't want video games that exist in a fantasy world to turn into social statements concerning reality?
Hmm, so because YOU don't feel it's necessary and don't want it, it shouldn't happen? Jeez, do you have any idea just how selfish and entitled you sound? Grow up, seriously.

I hate this challenge. I misunderstood the description and thought they were going to spawn where the totems actually are, and I couldn't understand why I couldn't find any (equipped a map and went on a totem hunt)

The arguments of 'why does this need to be a big announcement, why can't they just treat it as no big deal' to me really smacks of straight people (and some LGBT+ people, admittedly - as demonstrated by someone on this very thread) who whinge on about Pride events/parade "oh, why do they need to shove it down our throats, why do they need to make such a big deal about it, why do they insist on banging on about how different they are, doesn't that just emphasise the difference instead of 'assimilating'?"
No. It's especially shocking to me when LGBT+ have that attitude - it's so deeply ignorant. You can spend 2 minutes Googling why Pride events are so important and necessary, or you can stay ignorant.
It's the same with this. You can spend 2 minutes searching why representation matters, and if you don't get it you never will.

In case this is a genuine question from someone trying to learn more about the topic, I'll try to give a genuine answer.
The reason is because heterosexual is the default. Whenever you see a character, you generally assume they are heterosexual. When you meet a person in your life, you probably assume they are heterosexual. Even if you have gay friends in your life, you probably assume strangers on the street are heterosexual whether you think about it or not.
If you're not heterosexual, you also might think of others as heterosexual by default. If you're struggling with your own feelings of self, due to existing discrimination, family issues, or just generally being "different", you might feel uncomfortable and feel "wrong" or "broken". When you learn that someone else is gay and they are proud and everything is alright, it helps you to feel like you can be proud of yourself and you are perfect as you are.
That's who this is for and that's why it's important that it's loudly said and announced. It's for that person.
If you're not that person, then this announcement isn't really for you. Not every announcement, piece of news, or section of entertainment is for you or directed at you. When you fit the "default" for society, it's sometimes hard to remember that. When you aren't the "default", that's the norm.
If we lived in a different world and being straight/gay was literally 50/50 and there was absolutely no discrimination in the past, present, or future, then yes an announcement like this would be weird. We do not live in that world so it's important that we give a platform and comfort to our LGBT+ friends.
I wish I could vote this up multiple times - this is such a good post, and articulates it beautifully. The people who are genuine and want to know what 'the big deal' is should read it - the ones who don't, well we know why.

Or, you know, it really does not matter which genitals a character likes to touch? And no, 99,9% of everything does not represent heterosexuals. Especially nowadays where representation is forced everywhere. Why should everything that does not scream „I‘m gay“ be heterosexual? Many characters could be gay all along, or not, it just does not matter at all.
But I know, I am so „privileged“ and ignorant that it just makes me blind.
You just don't get it. No worries, maybe you will one day and maybe you won't. It makes little sense for me to continue this conversation so I wish you well, and just to say that when people from a marginalised group are trying to express why they feel a particular way about something, it would benefit everyone if people not of that group were to listen with an open mind and not immediately shout them down and say they are wrong. We are so very tired.

Representation in a horror game…
Anyway, it is pretty cheap just stating an existing character is suddenly gay.
But people have to be careful what they say to this, otherwise they are called homophobic by the woke bubble, like always.
Regarding your 'representation in a horror game' comment which I've seen in different guises quite often, there seems to be this implication or assumption that representation doesn't matter when it's a horror game that's not about sexuality at all. I can sort of understand where people are coming from with that, but think of it from the other perspective - straight people don't even think about representation, because 99.9% of everything already represents them by default. It's not even a factor in their lives and therefore a lot of straight people can't seem to grasp why it matters to other people and why it's important. If it truly doesn't matter to you, be glad that it doesn't, and move on. It does astonish me when people complain about representation as if it's over-representing, the common phrase 'shoving it down our throats' etc without acknowledging that non-straight people have heterosexuality 'shoved down our throats' literally constantly, since birth - you just don't see it.
Get some self-awareness and check your privilege.

You did not understand my message. It's good that a person represents this sexual orientation. But why do you always have to shout out the information loud and clear instead of letting people understand naturally through the texts ? You wouldn't write a message to publicly declare a character's heterosexuality, so why do it for homosexuality ? It only reinforces the difference and the gap when we seek for many equal treatment and the stopping of the spotlight.
I see what you're saying, it would be great to get to a point where something like this truly IS not a big deal at all and is truly equal to heterosexuality, but we're just not there yet - by highlighting the difference, instead of thinking of it as a means of reinforcing a 'division', try to frame it as a way of normalising and embracing it. I personally don't believe that we progress by ignoring our differences and diversities, but by embracing them and appreciating how they bring different strengths and experience to the tapestry of life.

Very, very tacky move to just pick the one a lot of gay guys like when it's in his existing lore that he isn't gay. Comes off as very "oh well just slap on the gay tag to shut them up."
As has been pointed out, it does not state in the existing lore that he isn't gay. It states that he previously dated a woman. Something that a vast number of gay men also did at one point in their lives.

So instead of making a new character they just dumpstered an existing one that people may have their own ideas about.... cool.
It's fine i guess. exceptionally lazy and will annoy people.
Or... just a thought, it could be read as more 'true to life' in that you likely know many LGBTQIA2+ people or have encountered them in your life, and have maybe made some assumptions about them or thought they were one thing and discovered (or not) at a later stage that you were wrong. A lot of gay men aren't effeminate, super-obviously gay (though there's of course absolutely nothing wrong with those that are) and are assumed to be straight by people unless they are corrected. I know, being one of them.

Playing Killer in Dead by Daylight is truly a difference experience than many other online team games.
You are solely responsible for each and every decision you make as Killer. This isn't League of Legends where you can say "My team sucked" or "Jungle never ganked". If you lost, it was because YOU (the Killer) played poorly.
Any enjoyment also has to be created by the Killer. There is no clear win condition for Killer. It is not concrete for survivor, but much more clear.
I say all of this because it's truly Killer's enjoyment of the game that is waning. Taking balance out of the equation, There are too many tedious things stacked against them to create their own enjoyment anymore.
Notice an uptick in face-camping? Directly a result of this.
Essay aside, I agree with you. I wouldn't use the word "cater", but all the enjoyable additions (lately) are Survivor based.
I'm a bit confused here. You say that killer's enjoyment of the game is waning which is why they face-camp - but can any killers please explain to me how face-camping is fun? Even if you don't kill anyone, surely chasing after survivors is more fun than hooking them and just standing still for a couple of minutes until they die. Someone make it make sense!
-
Camping and tunnelling is out of control. If killers are so triggered by the CoH boon, just remove it from the game. The camping and tunnelling is killing this game and I am getting to the point I want to stop playing because it's rarely enjoyable
-
I introduced a friend to the game recently and their comments echo some of what has been said - bloodweb is too grindy, with too many perks and useless items (what's even the point of keys now, seriously? It's a one in a hundred chance to actually use one which makes them and therefore all the key add-ons a waste of points but you often can't avoid buying them) and the second major flaw is killers camping. If you're new as survivor your teammates are probably quite new too - you'll likely get downed quickly and if the killer camps, without experienced teammates you might be stuck on that hook until you die. You've maybe had a minute of actual game - why would you keep playing that?
-
Sure, make BT, Decisive and Kindred basekit too though

@SunsetSherbet said:
Survivors: "Chases are the most fun part of the game!"
Also survivors: "I hate when the killer repeatedly chases me instead of letting me do gens!"
I really don't get it.
Call me crazy, but when I play a game I like to experience all of the gameplay. Yes, chases are fun - but if you are in a chase the whole time until you are dead, you've experienced a fraction of the game. Likewise for your teammates who have only sat on gens and done the odd unhook. I don't understand why this is difficult to grasp - tunnelling limits the experience for all the players. A limited experience is not the route to maximising fun
-
The issue I think the Devs have in maintaining balance in this game is that it's not a case of Killer Vs Survivor, as you have Killer, SWF and Solo Q that all need to be balanced - if you buff Killer to balance against SWF, you disproportionately nerf Solo Q.
I feel like there a lots of small QoL changes they could make that would buff Solo Q without buffing SWF at all, and then Killer could be buffed/Survivor overall could be nerfed and it would be a more balanced game overall.
For example, the big advantage SWF has over Solo is comms and map awareness. Wouldn't it be easy enough to add a small icon on the survivor portrait to indicate what they are currently doing (i.e. on a gen, being chased, in a locker, healing someone) so the team has a bit more info on what their teammates are currently doing? There's never going to be the same level of coordination as with a SWF group but it would definitely be helpful.
Additionally, there could be some way of flagging to your teammates that you are intending to go for the hook rescue, or intending to create a distraction, so everyone knows. So much of Solo Q is just doing what you think you should be in complete ignorance of what everyone else on your team is doing, so it makes any sort of teamwork completely accidental most of the time.
I also think there could be some nerfs to some killer perks that disproportionately affect Solo Q - just for example, I think Franklin's Demise is pretty unfair as far as killer perks go, because typically if you lose your item it's not that easy to recover it whereas in SWF you can tell one of your teammates to pick it up and bring it back to you. Fairer would be disable the use of an item for X amount of time rather than drop it completely for example.
Equally, there could then be some nerfs or reworks to perks that are seen as unfair by killers when SWF use them, but are close to useless for Solo Q - can't think of any examples off the top of my head but we're in that weird situation where the meta is stale because the moment a perk is seen as viable for Survivor, it gets abused by SWF to the point it gets nerfed and then it's no longer viable for anyone which means the meta never changes.
Regarding something like CoH which seems to be a big complaint from Killers, what if it had charges, or a duration after which point it reverts to being a dull totem or breaks?
Just some random thoughts. I still have fun playing this game but appreciate it's not been for as long as some of you, but I do think there are some ways to even things around for all sides to make for a more fun experience. Forcing killers to camp/tunnel isn't fun for anyone and if a game isn't fun, what is it even for?
-
This is the bit that got me:
"dude has blood warden. and all of us died to it because it stayed up a literal minute long"
Yes, that's...that's what it does...
I am not sure if this is a troll post?
-
It makes the game boring.
A boring game isn't fun.
The purpose of a game is to have fun.
Therefore, tunnelling defeats the purpose of the game. People don't want to play anymore. People play other games instead. The game dies.
What's not clicking?
-
It might not be considered bannable but I do think it's unsportsmanlike behaviour - I wish that actually did something, like if someone gets over a certain percentage they start to only get matched with other players of a similar poor behaviour score, and if you give props someone's behaviour score is boosted and they are more likely to get matched with other good behaviour players - but I guess that's a pipedream.

Intentionally trying to annoy or anger the other guy. There's no toxic perks or add-ons. Just people who abuse strong perks to have more control over the other person. Tbagging, flashlight clicking, and hitting on hook are also toxic, and there's no mental gymnastics that sufficiently justify them as not being toxic.
This sums it up for me.
It can be Survivor to Killer, Killer to Survivor, or even Survivor to Survivor - had a situation recently on The Game vs Spirit, I found a glowing totem which I cleansed and it happened to be Haunted Ground. One of my teammates then got downed nearby, which he then decided to blame on me (sent me a sarcastic "Thanks broooooooooooooo" message) - I found dull totem a bit later in the game tucked in a corner and he deliberately blocked me in until the Spirit came. A little later, two of the team were hooked in the basement and I went down for the rescue and unhooked them both, but got downed and hooked myself and no one bothered to unhook me. He sent me another message along the lines of "me and my dudes decided that we wouldn't unhook you".
To me that's just plain trash. Not only blaming someone for your failure, but then deliberately trolling them, and throwing the game to spite them - that's toxic behaviour. They all died soon after anyway. To be honest, I pity this type of person since their lives must be so incredibly sad and empty as to derive joy from ruining someone else's videogame. I can't imagine what level of pathetic you have to be to do that.
-
For survivors, I feel like Borrowed Time is mandatory and even though I resent having to take it, whenever anyone doesn't have it and unhooks me, it invariably results in me being tunnelled. Though I think there's also a strong argument for something like Bond - something that puts Solo Q closer on par with SWF would be nice.
For killers, since nearly every killer has BBQ might as well pick that.

This literally happens every time I face pig which is why she is one of my most hated to face.
The other day it was the start of the game and only one gen was done after a long chase by me and the pig downed me then put a trap on and hooked me.
Got unhooked and came straight for me again, got unhooked again and once more came straight for me and killed me.
It happens often, I'm not one to complain about camping and tunneling because it's whatever but at the start of the game? And how she just tunneled me out with literally within a minute, it's just unfair and infuriating.
From now on I'll just probably play toxic kinda when I see it's a pig since they're more than likely going to anyway.
I get it she's weak and needs pressure but doesn't make it any more fun for the person is she completely ruining the game for.
This is exactly what happens to me, or a teammate when I face the Pig. I find it unfun to play against any tunneller (whether it's me or a teammate being tunnelled) but it's perplexing when Pig does it because it's literally pointless to use your power if you're not going to actually use it, you know?
-
@Sonzaishinai said:
I wouldn't go out of my way to tunnel but if i see an injured survivor with a trap and a reasonable oppertunity to take them out i will take it.
I won't ignore them for a trap that may or may not be removed 10 seconds later after they interracted with the first box they come across.
In theory it's better to leave trapped survivors alone but in practise the slowdown is so inconcistant that taking them down if you get the chance is just better.
It's not just seeing an injured survivor with trap, it's literally waiting for them to get unhooked and then chasing them down and hooking them again - meanwhile the 3 others are doing gens and you're likely going to get 1k absolute max.
My last game this happened to me, I just ran for the exit with the active trap still on and she STILL chased me, even though I obviously died by the exit. I just didn't want to give her the satisfaction of downing me that last time.
-
Killer: Franklin's Demise. I wouldn't even say it's particularly popular but for some reason I have been encountering it a lot lately and I find it really annoying to play against, if you've brought a decent item in with good add-ons only to lose it before you've had a chance to use it. Just feels cheap to me.
Survivor: DS. It's pointless to me now, as others have said if you're being tunnelled it will make little difference unless you have teammates who can run enough interference for you to get away after, otherwise they'll just eat it and continue to go after you. It's pretty much useless in solo q, maybe it's better in SWF.
-
If I become aware that a teammate is being tunnelled, then I tend to try and distract the killer and bodyblock, get them to chase/hit me instead etc - but I have to say the majority of the time, a killer who is going to tunnel is going to do it no matter what. I have literally run into killers before and they still just want to go for whoever they are tunnelling.
-
I agree that they are both trash perks and a waste of a slot. However, you mentioned that there's a precedent for perks that don't synergize using Claudette as an example and I disagree with you there - she's designed as a healer - by using Botany Knowledge you speed up your own Self-Care healing, or the healing you do to others who you can locate using Empathy, so there is definite synergy.
-
He looks great!!
-
The issue I have with it is that it doesn't encourage you to get better as a killer, because you can always use it as a crutch to get kills if the game went badly. It feels cheap as a survivor to have a good game and then fall down at the final hurdle too, simply because you couldn't find one totem. It also discourages end game saves - sorry, but if I know a killer has NOED I'm just straight up leaving asap, I don't want to feed them more kills.
-
Is it just me who can't find any detail at all about what the powers are for The Cenobite or what the box does? I thought it was going to be covered in the patch notes.
-
I'm sad to see the laboratory map go, I actually like it. I'm hoping they will replace it with a Hellraiser-themed map - hell labyrinth perhaps?
-
When it becomes consistently unfun to play.
At the moment, it's inconsistently fun, which is still an issue but the times where it is fun are sufficient to keep me coming back for more. But it is diminishing returns - survivor teammates that screw you over, killers who camp and tunnel - a seemingly complete lack of interest from the developers to implement any new interesting mechanics or even different game modes (like, how about 8 v 2, or a mode where survivors leave no scratch marks and killers have no terror radius/red stain, or there are additional objectives - I've only been playing this game for a few months and already it is feeling stale, I don't know how people stick with it for years on end).

Well what happens in most tunneling scenarios is that the killer just doesn't let you move very far from the hook. If you go down in an area with no resources the killer can guarantee you to stay there forever. You can't just say "why are you mad at being tunneled? Just loop the killer" when there is literally no way to do that.
Not to mention, when I have a teammate that is being tunnelled I will deliberately run into the killer to get them to chase/hit me instead - and when they choose not to and continue to go for the one they are tunnelling, at that point I know they are scum and I will disconnect in solidarity with the tunnelled one if they d/c.
It's bizarre to me that people think you only get tunnelled if you are bad at chases - get unhooked in sight of the killer in a dead area and you have very little chance to escape if they are tunnelling.

For most people, winning is fun. They're not opposite goals.
No, agreed - but that's down to your definition of winning. If as a killer you enjoy tunnelling someone out of the game and then either losing the rest because they have focused gens, or having an easy win because it's 3 rather than 4 for the majority of the game - that's up to you. It isn't and will never be fun to me personally, and as a survivor it's just plain boring and makes me not want to play, maybe that's the ultimate answer - win by playing something else.

Last I checked, I win when I eliminate all the survivors.
It's this attitude that I don't understand, personally. I win when I have a fun game - regardless if I escape as a survivor, or kill everyone as killer.
If you escape as survivor, but you didn't have fun - did you really win? Is 'winning' the most important thing to you? If you kill all the survivors, but they just lined up and walked into you - did you win?
-
I will never understand why people don't know why tunnelling is hated. It's very simple:
- If you're being tunnelled, you don't get the opportunity to play all the aspects of the game. It's boring.
- If you're not being tunnelled, you don't get the opportunity to play all the aspects of the game. It's boring.
Tunnelling is BORING. Games are meant to be fun. End of story.
-
I don't use DS since the nerf, one of the last times I did use it, I got picked up right by the (open) exit gate and I missed the damn skill check and got killed.
I personally think DS is pointless now anyway, since anyone who uses it only has a few seconds to get away and the killer goes straight for them as soon as they've recovered. Yes it technically buys them a 'second chance' but the vast vast majority of times I've seen it used, they get hooked 10 seconds later rather than 5 seconds later anyway. To me it's a waste of a slot, eliminating the skill check would make no difference to me.

Tunneling to me is when the Killer waits for the unhook nearby, does not go for the unhooker at all, and just tunnels down one survivor over and over until he's out of the game.
There have been times when I have thrown myself in front of the Killer, trying to take hits to get him off a freshly unhooked team mate. I'm not doing it as a strategy, I'm doing it because I feel bad for the player not getting a chance to do a damn thing. It sucks to leave a match, depip, never touch a generator etc because the Killer wants EZ 4k. Unfortunately, it seems every other Killer is doing this now (or maybe always was like this) and that's why we all must run the same perks: BT, DS, etc
Agreed. I had a game yesterday where a guy was downed then unhooked by me safely, soon after they got downed again and unhooked by a teammate immediately (literally immediately) and then downed instantly. I ran over and got the killer to hit me, and then down me, in the hope he would pick me up and he still picked the other guy up. During this whole time, the teammates hadn't done a single gen. We both disconnected - screw that killer and screw our 'teammate', I'm not staying in a boring game with trash.
-
I have had the map literally once and one survivor disconnected immediately, which prompted the two others to disconnect, and I thought to myself, oh well maybe the killer (Nemesis - so on-brand) will be chilled and we can just explore the map but no he went for me and downed me immediately, so I d/c'ed too. What a prick.
-
I don't find him OP - I do find him unfun to play against and usually scummy. I never have an enjoyable game versus a Wraith, whether win or lose.
-
Cannot describe how much I utterly hate that perk anyway - literally the most scummy killer perk out there. Seems to have become really popular lately for some reason. I honestly feel like it's straight up unfair as there isn't any way to avoid it, and usually when you are hit you then run away from where you were hit so it's unlikely you'll be able to recover it.
Doing it and then purposely disconnecting is scum of the highest order, I've not encountered it but I'm not surprised since scumminess seems to be on the rise.
-
Definitely a lot more d/c, it's incredibly annoying when it happens early in a match as Survivor because it is very difficult to come back from. I've had more than a few games where someone will d/c if they are the first downed.
I only d/c if I've been tunnelled and I'm just about to be hooked for the final time.
-
In terms of killers I hate playing against, I base it on which killers I find UNFUN to play against - so even though I think Spirit is hard to play against, I still actually tend to have fun playing against her so I wouldn't put her on the list. Same with Nurse - a good nurse is really hard to play against, but still enjoyable IMO.
I hate playing against a Pig, I find the reverse bear trap mechanic really tedious and I also seem to end up facing Pigs who continue to go after me even when I have a trap on, which doesn't make much sense to me. I have had games where I die to the trap because I just haven't been left alone long enough to even attempt to remove it - which I guess some people think is the point of playing her? Just seems boring to me.
I also hate playing against a Bubba, I just don't like the chainsaw and have trouble avoiding it, plus I really hate the sounds (the chainsaw and his squealing).
I hate playing against Huntress because the song annoys the hell out of me.
I'm surprised so many people hate going against a Hag or Ghost Face - for me, they are two of the more fun killers. I get genuinely anxious going against a GF and I find the Hag popping up all over the place quite funny.
-
I would love there to be a counter on it, at minimum. It's annoying looking for a totem to have a heal in reserve when the totem doesn't even exist anymore.

Theyre doing it for the memes I think.
Very annoying.
Not at all, why are you assuming that they even have cakes? I am getting perhaps one cake each level of the Bloodweb as survivor so I don't have one for every match, it's better to use something than nothing surely?
For me, the games are going one of two ways when everyone/almost everyone brings a cake - either the killer is just farming which personally I find boring, or they are the scummiest possible and seem to want to end the game as quickly as they can by tunnelling, slugging, camping. Seems to be no middle ground where they just want to play fair/normally and give everyone the opportunity to max their points.

Just remember - when you decide to "punish" for an unsafe unhook by downing the unhooked survivor - you're punishing the wrong person. Chances are very good they are cursing up a blue streak on their side of the monitor about why someone who is being chased is trying to unhook. So the person you're punishing is the victim in the unsafe play, not the perpetrator. If you want to punish someone for making a bad play, at least punish the person actually doing it, not the victim of the action. I say that as someone who often has people come and unhook me who have no business doing so because the Killer is right behind them - it's not as though the person on the hook has any way to tell them not to.
100% agree. That's what makes it feel so scummy.

BT and DS don't deter killers anymore. I've taken to running BT every match because it's gotten so bad.
IMO BT is the only mandatory survivor perk around now. The game is just not worth playing without it.

I think people defending tunnelling so vocally don't see the bigger picture with this - it may be a 'legit' strategy, but by doing it from the beginning of a game, you are creating an unfun game for 4 other players - the one who is being tunnelled, plus their 3 team mates who get very little interaction with the killer while they are tunnelling. I don't like it whether I am the one being tunnelled or the team mate of someone who is, as the 'solution' proposed by most killers is 'oh just do gens then' which is fine, but that's boring. I want some balance and variety in the game - not either be tunnelled out of it, or sit on gens for a few minutes while someone else on my team is. Perhaps that's just me - shame on me for expecting a game to be fun and to be able to participate in all parts of it huh?
Oh and I define tunnelling as situations where the killer will go out of their way to deliberately and consistently target one specific survivor, I have been in many situations where I have deliberately tried to get the killer to go for me instead if I'm not being tunnelled, or they have had obvious other targets when I am being tunnelled, and they don't. Are they obliged to? No. But is it a scummy way to play, that is going to put people off and discourage them from playing? Yes.
If you don't see an issue with it as far as the health of the game in general goes, then good luck to you - enjoy your boring games where you tunnel people out of the game and then others quit or give up so you get your 4k because winning is more important than having fun.
