  • They barely manage to do updates without breaking things now. This would massively increase workload and require new systems to be created to handle rotations. That's not really feasible. There's a lot more than changing a couple values when it comes to perks. That code is tangled with everything else (that's why they break stuff so often).

It's good that people are trying to think outside the box....don't be discouraged. These ideas are just too complex for BHVR to pull off in their current state. When you're coming up with ideas try to consider how much work would need to be done and how to accomplish it within budget restrictions. DBD has been successful, but BHVR is still an indie studio with limited resources.

This is a fair point that I believe has been made obsolete ever since they buried the soft cap into the ground and made backfills basically everything goes. You can have streaks escaping through the gates with teammates who know what they're doing, then even with insta queues the game suddendly keeps puttin you into lobbies with thre bots crouching in the corner of the map.

I wish it were obsolete, but MMR hell is still very much alive and well. It is somewhat better now. You don't get stuck in there quite as long and there is a lot more randomness to the quality of players you get. I've gotten weird potatoes during win streaks and absolute god squads in losing streaks. People still play like there's no soft cap though, so that mentality is still the same. Far more people screw their teammates over now compared to the old emblem system. I actually preferred the emblem matchmaking, at least before it turned into constant rainbow matches. Games were more consistent.

  • I think people are missing a huge drawback to the MMR system that's mainly a survivor issue. If survivors have higher MMR, they're more likely to get better teammates. Matches get a little easier to handle. But to get higher MMR, you gotta escape at all costs...even if that means screwin over your teammates. You can do 3 gens, run the killer for the other 2, heal teammates, take hits for em....practically carry a team, but if you get hooked at the end and gates are open your team's probably just gonna roll out. Nobody wants to drop in MMR. A couple bad matches are insignificant, but line up a string of loses and the potato factor starts to increase. Then you lose more. Now you're stuck in MMR hell where you can't get that Dwight to stop pickin his nose long enough to hit a damn skillcheck. The games start to suck hardcore cuz you're still in a spot to get competent killers. Why would I go through all that when I could just say screw everybody else, Ima leave as soon as those gates got juice? That cycle is why most people hate solo q right now.

  • Definitely Dwight. It's always the quiet, twitchy ones that seem normal. Nobody sees it comin.

  • It's a pretty common style house in southern and eastern US, especially out in the sticks. I don't think it's based on any of the movies, but there's similarities.

  • It' not so bad. Really just comes down to gen strategy. Defend the middle gens in early game as killer, you'll probably do well. Get middle gens done early as a survivor, and most of you will probably get out. There are exceptions, but overall it's one of the most balanced newer maps if you understand how to play it.

I took a break from videogames as I was recovering from a car accident, today I logged into DBD and got 2000 Shards so thank you BHVR.

I got a brand new 4K TV but DBD looks so blurry in it, also the skill checks go way faster now or maybe it's just me, I somehow keeps missing even if I actually clicked on the skill check bar...

More teammates are throwing, more killers are camping/slugging, I just want to unlock those Holidays Event cosmetics but they're making it so hard.

I'm guessing you're on console if you're playin on a tv. Turn HDR off in your settings and 4k on like -1 or -2. It'll help a lot with visuals and performance if you haven't already done that. I'm on ps5 and it made a world of difference.

  • I don't really like this map on either side. Seems like the only time anyone gets any action is around the main building. It's way too big to be any fun and I'm always trippin on some random junk with a hitbox a meter bigger than the object. Map looks cool, if you don't hafta play on it lol

  • Might I recommend The Long Dark? There's plenty of snow and I've only been tbagged by a wolf once. That's how I'm spending the rest of the event lol

Thank you so much for the answers and advice I really am grateful. I am no longer a confused newbie ha.

Really do appreciate you taking your time to answer :)

Anytime. The game can be overwhelming when you start, but the community is pretty good about answering questions.

  • Side tip.....

Don't worry too much about builds you see people suggest. It's good to know about those, but ita be awhile before you can get all of those. Experiment with perks you have and see what works for you. Sometimes you can find really strong off meta builds that way.

  • As above. Every character (surv or killer) has 3 perks. The only way to get other characters' perks on a bloodweb is to own that character AND have them leveled up to at least prestige 1. P1 will give those 3 perks to every other character at level 1. At that point you can find higher levels of those perks (up to level 3) in a bloodweb randomly. As you continue prestiging a character, they will give their perks to every other character at higher levels. P2 gives every other character those 3 perks at level 2. P3 gives level 3 perks to everybody. You can also buy perks each week from the Shrine of Secrets (look in store tab). It has 4 random perks (2 killer/2surv) each week. Resets on Wednesdays. If you buy a perk there it will unlock that perk on every character. You CAN buy multiple levels of a perk, but I'd strongly recommend against that. Just buy the 1st level, then unlock higher levels in the bloodweb of whatever charater you wanna play.

Getting perks is a long process. Just keep playing and spending bloodpoints on characters that have perks you wanna unlock.

  • HugTech pretty much covered everything you need to know. For add ons, you could throw an infantry belt on if you want more hatchets. Could also use Iron Maiden for faster reloads. Most imprtant thing is the 'don't chase zig zaggers' part. This isn't an fps...let them come to your aim. Most people I know don't like crosshair apps. They seem to do more harm than good. Once you get a feel for them, it's easier without it. I'm a PS player...controller is fine.

  • Sounds like it'd be new people complaining about old things.

But hey, there wouldn't be so many threads about tunneling if survivors could get mori'd all the time lol

  • Personally, I'd like to have some type of base Kindred. Don't write off the value of icons just yet though. Players that pay attention to them could get a lot of value. For example, somebody's hooked and the rest of us have gen icons. I see somebody get off gen, probably goin for hook. Now I see they're in chase. Means they got cut off by killer. If the 1st player doesn't immediately get unhooked, I know it's a failed rescue and I should go get em. That's just one example. It'll take more effort from survivors to get maximum potential out of the icons, but good players will get a ton of info from them throughout the match. Looking forward to it.

  • That sounds like something's dying on your computer. As mentioned above, it could be your gpu. Could be a ram issue. Could mean somethin on your board is crappin out. Your best bet would be to take it in for service.

Either way, don't keep racking up penalties. It will eventually lead to a permaban.

  • SWFs can be incredibly annoying, but at the end of the day it's just another match. Personally, I really don't care who I'm goin against. I just adjust my playstyle to however they're playin. My only win condition in this game is gettin some bloodpoints and havin some fun while I do it. That mindset has done wonders for my sanity lol

But that’s not how it currently works. As OrangeBear said (and yes there are people using it) Windows Store is also on PC but as it’s a different platform and platform holder it’s not included in cross progression.

Stadia on the other hand is another platform as PC and currently cross progression is possible on there with Steam and Epic.

once switch joins, there will also be cross Progression between switch and some pc versions while other consoles won’t be included still.

Well this is a fun game of semantics, why not....

I never said ALL launchers within a platform offer shared progression. I said currently it is ONLY available within platform.

Stadia is dead. They're shutting down the service and offering full refunds for all games and products. The Switch deal has stalled. It may be coming at some point, but not today.

As of this moment, you can only get shared progression within the same platforms. Individual PC launchers are launchers, not platforms....even if people misuse the word platform.

  • Wait em out. If you can safely pick up the slug at some point, go for it. Distraction perks like the pebble and blowin up a far away gen are good for this. You could also try finishin a gen if there's only one left and hope they have adrenaline. If not, hide for hatch.

You can't be reported for whatever you do in this situation. That was just people bein salty.

  • It is a war of attrition....I don't know that they can do anything about it short of seriously nerfing/reworking perks on both sides. Toolboxes need to be toned down a bit too. I couldn't tell you the last time I played a killer match that I didn't see at least one Omega Toolbox at the end. I do fairly well without stacked gen perks in either role, but I can totally see the issues. Most players don't have the experience to counter gen builds. (Not a dig, it's just really hard unless you've learned how to scatter pressure. That takes time)

Today I could reveal him quite easily. Yesterday was a mess. Just seems inconsistent af sometimes

It's definitely been wonky since the last patch. I seem to have the best luck when I put him a lot higher on my screen than normal. Idk what's wrong, but hopefully they fix it soon.

  • It'd be cool, but the Hellraiser IP is still a legal nightmare of spaghetti monster proportions. They would need a seperate licensing agreement from whoever holds the rights from that particular film and would also have to iron out a deal between that publishing firm and Barker's.

  • Look lower, like put him between the center of your screen and the top third. It's weird, but he needs to be higher on your screen than it seems. Idk why it's set up that way but it works fairly consistantly.

My friends can play Elden Ring with tons of AI and a huge map on the PlayStation 4 Slim but Dead by Daylight can't even handle 3+ zombies and small maps in the game? Give me a break. PS5 only have 6 games in total and that is Astro's Playroom, Demon's Souls (2020 video game), Destruction AllStars, Final Fantasy XVI, Horizon Call of the Mountain and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Everything else is playable except for Dead by Daylight, that is, mind you, made in 2016.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category%3APlayStation_5-only_games

6 games for a new console. You have to be more realistic, please.

You, sir, are the troll here.

What Mooks is said is true - there is no cross progression on pc available with the windows store version.

The technical issue is a matter of transferring DLC purchases across different accounts.

But nobody was talking about windows store. (People actually use that? lol) The PC side of things gets more complicated because you have different entities that have to come to an agreement and have compatible specs. That doesn't change my original point that, as of now, shared progression ONLY happens within the same platform. Maybe someday it will change, but that is currently how it works.

  • @Mooks said:

No, not the same thing as they still belong to different parties.

XBox is Microsoft regardless of console, same with Sony and PlayStation. But for Epic and Steam, that’s different, they are literally competitors.

I think you're not understanding me. Platform means the device you play on. PC, Xbox, Playstation, and Switch are devices you play on. You can carry progress within platforms. Cross progression means carrying progress between platforms.

While Steam and Epic are competitors, they run on the same platform.

But you can't carry Steam progress over to Xbox because they're different platforms.

  • @Mooks said:

There is cross progression available between Steam, Epic and (as long as it’s still there) Stadia.

Switch has been confirmed to get it as well, though they ran into ‚technical Issues‘ and couldn’t say when it might get resolved

Yeah, Steam and Epic are both PC. That's within platform. (Stadia's already dead)

Same thing if you go from XB1 to XBseries.

As for the Switch, that hit a brick wall awhile back and I wouldn't expect it anytime soon. I hope I'm wrong, but it doesn't look good.

Is this the nurse version of the sadako post a few weeks back? 😂

Yep. That's why i stole the first comment from that post and "tweaked" it 🤣

  • Tried to sneak it in there......What if we just call it a solo q buff? lolz

  • I don't think they'll shrink maps because it'd cause issues with Nurse, Blight, and Wesker. But what they could do is bump up the base movement speed of m1 killers a little to make it easier to move around these giant ass maps they keep creating.

I like bigger maps in theory, but they kinda suck when you're still walkin around at tiny map speeds.

  • She’s average unless you do the blinky blink strategy which is definitely effective but not healthy for her kit imo. I’d rather buff her walking abilities and nerf that strategy

Also kill rates mean next to nothing. If we’re to go off of them Billy is the best killer in the game and Nea is the worst

  • If you're new or still trying to unlock perks, it's worth goin as high as you can for the BP bonus. Other than that, it's nice but doesn't really matter. As long as you play the game you'll get somethin on the 13th of each month.

  • Ehhh, that's very situational. I can run a decent Nurse or Blight and I'm not the strongest looper, but I've also been playing for almost 5 years. If you get a team that knows how to look out for eachother, draw aggro and do gens, they're not as strong as everyone makes em out to be. They are absolutely the strongest killers in the game, but it's nowhere near an immediate death sentence.

  • No. Currently progress is tied within platform, ie ps4>ps5 keep everything. Haven't heard anything recently about them doing cross progression anytime soon, but lots of people are asking for it.

  • Tie it to a perk. You can no longer attempt escape. Change Slippery Meat to give a 25% chance of unhooking, but you only get 1 or 2 attempts. After attempts you have 10 seconds before you hit stage 2. Then remove skill check regression in stage 2. For every skill check you hit, you get a decent amount of BP and pause the timer for a split second. Don't hit a skill check, you get nothing.

I don't think they can. I do not think they'll be a DBD2, nor a recoding. All the reasons you pointed out are true and make sense.

What I think will happen is the second Microsoft and Sony end their support for last gens so will DBD. That'll likely happen just over a year from now. I pray some form of Cross Progression happens for those who would go that route.

At the moment about half of those playing on Xbox and PS are still on last gen, so it's not an insignificant number of neglected players imo.

Damn, I was hopin you'd have an idea I'd overlooked.

They really should implement full cross progresaion at this point. It wouldn't be hard to do and I think long term, more people would be willing to spend more money on other things like new DLC or cosmetics. There's probably a lot of people that hold back because they're not sure how long their platform is gonna be worthwhile or they're thinking of hopping to PC, but don't want to buy everything again and start from the bottom.

Why should I buy a PS5 just to play Dead by Daylight? PS5 doesn't even have games.

That's gotta be the trolliest comment I've ever seen. PS5 has a bunch of games that are pretty awesome, with more in the pipeline. Not to mention almost every PS4 game, including DBD (which also has a free upgrade to PS5 version), plays significantly better. Once you get a PS5 you'll never want to go back. It's that much of a difference.

We're not just still burning about how last gen ended up being treated, but as Pulsar also said these same dang issues are showing up on the new machines as well.

Hard to have much hope for a decent optimization given their record up till now.

Besides our concerns, options like a replay mode to lessen the reporting system demands on the playerbase can only happen with a fresh coding from scratch. And those options would benefit us all regardless of platform.

Agreed. For the players, a new game with a clean, up to date foundation would be best. For BHVR, given their current size, it would absolutely bankrupt them. They could try to reach out to a major publisher, but that comes with a ton of downsides from a business sense. I don't think they're willing or able to go down that road. If they did, we would almost surely get hit with far more predatory monetization. Personally, I don't think it's worth it.

I don't know how else they could pull it off on the business side. How do you think they could do it?

  • @JPLongstreet said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3304760#Comment_3304760

Since collectively the consoles by far make up the largest playerbase of DBD, that approach cannot and will not work. It hasn't worked since 2018, and it is worsening as we speak. Plus lower-end PC's also struggle with the coding, despite meeting the min and recommended specs.

I realize it started out as a PC-only game, as many do. But they ported it on over to the consoles, and imo it is not unreasonable to ask for the game to run & continue to run somewhat well. If that is not possible, it should have stayed just on Steam and by now would be largely forgotten. But they did put it out for console. So around we go.

Our passionate frustration is rooted in the same place as you, our love & hope for what can be an awesome game.

We're definitely on the same side here. I do think as more people move to next gen consoles we'll see some sort of optimization for those platforms. I just don't think they have the resources to try to do much when it comes to older consoles. They will continue to slip until they're no longer supported at all. It happens to games with every new generation.

As much as it sounds like I'm defending BHVR, I'm really not. Simply being realistic. They set themselves up for this kinda backlash because they have a terrible track record when it comes to over-promising and under-delivering. Everyones frustration with that is completely justified.

I hope they can find a solution that keeps older console versions viable for as long as possible, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

  • If your internet is that bad you should definitely take breaks after you get 1 or 2 DC penalties. The penalty timers will reset if you wait long enough. The higher the penalty, the longer the cooldown. If you're currently at a 24hr, don't play again for a week (i think). You will absolutely get permabanned if you keep stacking them up.

If possible, play on a wired connection or get better internet service. That's really all you can do.

  • I see a lot of people saying DCs are the result of games not being "fun" or the game is "boring".

Why don't I see people constantly DCing when their side is winning? Or when they get a ridiculous map in their favor? (Yeah, I'm looking at you survivors that never DC on Garden of Joy)

    Hmmm....seems strange.

  • They should absolutely increase DC penalties and get rid of the hook quit option. We ALL have bad matches, but if you're someone that DCs the second you don't get your way, I got no sympathy for you.

Yeah, they should also do things to mitigate some of the worst playstyles/aspects of the game. However, at the end of the day if you're DCing or quitting on a regular basis....you ARE the problem. Please stop ruining the game because you never learned how to handle adversity.

The kicker is the new gen machines are slowly showing the same frame drop triggers the last gen ones did. I'm not saying they'll end up as roughly running DBD they are too powerful for that, for now.

But similar issues cropping up on the new machines is troubling.

    @Pulsar said:

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3304720#Comment_3304720

The issues that cause last-gen systems to have problems are also causing new-gen systems to have problems.

The underlying issues are the same. Will you be saying the same thing in a year when these issues get worse?

RPD, Garden of Pain and Haddonfield all cause major frame drops and freezes on my Series X. I can only imagine what sort of slideshow horror the game is on Xbox One or PS4.

DBD came out in 2016, I don't think it's too much to ask that the game WORKS on systems that were current when the game came out. Hell, the Xbox One X has the same issues and it released YEARS after DBD. The game is EXTREMELY poorly optimized, even for people on PC.

You're both right. The same issues will continue to creep in. That's not unusual. The DBD we have now is a significantly bigger game than the DBD that released in 2016. The problems arise because for all these years they've been building off of that original code. The foundation is trying to support more than it was originally intended to. They try to improve what they can, but those original building blocks can only stretch so far. So now they're stuck with 2 options. Keep trying to move forward with what they have or scrap everything and build a new DBD from the ground up.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for everything to be better. But if you come to me and say "hey, to do this we need a whole new game and you gotta start from scratch (a la Destiny 2)" my response would be a resounding "nope".

That's just the nature of game development. BHVR is not big enough and doesn't have the resources to do a complete overhaul in place. The only way they could do it at this point would be to make an entirely new game and that would absolutely decimate the playerbase. As much as it sucks, I'd rather see them continue as they are.

  • It's basically just there to either goof around with or if you're trying to get adept/do something where you need to double pip. Instadowns tank your score when it comes to emblems. So if chainsaws only count as a normal hit you can still get points for using your power AND getting 2 hits on survivor before they go down.

  • They did, and they probably tried their best...but it was too optimistic. Now we're at a point where it just wouldn't make sense to follow through. I love BHVR and DBD, but at best they're barely on the high end of indie studios. You're trying to compare them to EA Dice and other major devs. EA's legal department has more people and resources than the entirety of BHVR. It's not a fair comparison.

I get it. BHVR overpromised and it feels like a let down. It feels like they're just draggin their feet cuz they want to screw you over or something, but that's not the case. They had big goals and just couldn't pull it off. I'm sure they're disappointed too. Now that ship has sailed and they gotta try to move on for the long term health of the game. They may try to get some small fixes pushed through to do as much as they can for players on older hardware, but it's not gonna be the giant overhaul you want. They can't do that and stay in business. It's too much.

  • @Pulsar said:

    There's really no excuse.

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/3304629#Comment_3304629

Yes, they can. DBD is not an intense game. If Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1 and Battlefront II can run better than DBD, there's an issue.

It's completely unacceptable that DBD looks like a PS3 game and runs like your trying to play RDR2 on your grandma's Windows 98 laptop.

I think you missed my point. They're focused on PC and next gen. They're not going to hire on a bunch more people to keep old platforms up to speed when those are going to become obsolete as soon as manufacturers can start getting products in stores, which is starting to happen now. It simply wouldn't be a smart business decision on their part given the staff and resources it would require. Sucks for a lot of people, but that's the reality of it. Consoles are moving forward and they gotta follow that.

  • The older consoles just can't handle things as well. There's not much BHVR can do about that with current staffing levels. Looking towards the future, once you get on next gen things run pretty smooth. A lot of people aren't there yet, but stock is starting to show up in stores. Hope you can upgrade soon.

  • There's some great advice here. Couple things I'll throw out in addition...

It's ok to 'lose'. Don't get triggered. Take your time getting a good foundation. As others pointed out, winning too much will bump you up before you're ready. Don't camp, tunnel, or do things that give you an 'easy' kill. Doing that stuff will hurt you in the long run.

Spies from the Shadows is a great info perk for new players. Every killer can get it and no one expects it. You can always passively find people with Spies.

Be unpredictable. Drop chases that aren't going well if you see someone on a nearby gen. Check gens that you would do as survivor, walk away, then quickly double back to catch someone off guard. Change the way you patrol gens...if you always rotate in the same direction, survs will know to hide til you pass n jump right back on em.

When you're looping, hug the walls as closely as possible. One of the most common mistakes is going too wide. You lose distance if you drift too wide.

Remember, you don't need to kick every pallet in chase. Kicking resets your bloodlust. Sometimes it can be better to keep that speed boost to run em down. Learn what pallets MUST be kicked, then ignore everything else if you're in chase.

OhTofu has a good series of videos on youtube from like 3 years ago. People would send in their gameplay and he would pick apart what they did right and wrong. Some info is outdated now, but the core stuff is still relevant. Those videos did wonders for my gameplay when I was starting out.

Find a killer you like, then stick with em for awhile. Changing killers a lot during a play session will throw off your rhythm. Learn a killer inside n out before you start changing killers. Each one has their own feel and tactics.

Most importantly, just keep playing. Things will start to click for you without even consciously realizing it. The more time you play, the more you'll improve.

1 2 3 4 … 8
